Welcome to another edition of our learner driver podcast show. As promised we like to keep things topical and educate you on current trends and new advances in this sector.
In this episode, we will be talking with Rob Cooling a driving instructor from Nottingham who is an avid electric vehicle owner and teaches his learner drivers in an electric vehicle.
Rob gives us a really good insight into what it means to own a new electric vehicle and the savings that come with electric vehicles.
Based in Nottingham - he delves into how the infrastructure of charging an electric vehicle can be overcome for people that aren't able to have home charging points. How to plan your trips and he discusses the advancement in technology. 10 years ago, a 100-mile trip would need an hour charging time and nowadays, this is now done in 10 minutes or less.
He discusses advancement in technology with the installation of lampost charging for people without home charging capabilities. He also references the savings he makes on purchasing a new electric vehicle and how he off-sets this against the cost of the car. He explains his road map to ownership and his ability to own his car for a lot longer than he would normally do with a fossil fuel car.
Rob continues to inform us of the depreciation value of an old electric vehicle - losing 50% of its value in the first year. When electric vehicles first come out fear-mongering lead to the depreciation value the second-hand car price. Over time this has balanced out and nowadays a second-hand EV car can actually sell for more than a brand new one.
Rob continues to explain that the rise in sales of electric vehicles is at a whopping 300% and this is not slowing down anytime soon. Waiting lists for EV vehicles are really high - he is on an 8-month waiting list for his new electric vehicle purchase. However, if you wanted to pay more for a car than you do have the option of buying now.
An app that can help where the charging network is and how you can plan where you are going to stop and have a back-up plan at service breaks, especially if you go on a long journey.
Rob continues to explain the Government's investment into EV charging and with private companies and the fast expansion of EV charging points.
All of the cars are automatic and the gearbox is redundant. All the new tech bypasses this problem so gears are no longer needed. All-electric vehicles do have a gear - but there is no clutch. The manual car will not survive the next decade and the manual car production will seize in the next 5 years.
During this episode, we also discuss the changes to the driving test due to the current pandemic and what the learner driver can face as a consequence. These include:

Our interview: Rebecca (Norwich) on a driving lesson and was about to do his driving test and was going through some traffic lights when a car decided to drive straight through a red traffic light. The situation was scary and the driver of the car was prosecuted.
The driver would have got a fixed penalty fine or an awareness course. Rebecca discusses how you should keep any footage for the police and wait to share on social media.
Driving instructors are not covered under the zero-tolerance law and how other industries are covered. Rebecca wants to bring this into the eyes of the government and bring our industry into line with other sectors.

Swan & Soto! x
In this episode, we discuss car accidents before driving tests and cancelled tests due to fog! Winter barbecues and snow in the UK! And the big 'divorce' Brexit!
Introduction
We chat about our delayed Brexit special episode - due to the delayed Brexit - thanks, Boris!
We discuss the changes to the driving licence in the UK and point you in the right direction!
What type of licence you'll need when travelling abroad! Every country has their own legislations - so you'll need to check your licence when you drive abroad - now that the FREE movement is being banned.
You'll need to check your driving insurance also! Make sure that you have the right IDP (international driver's permit) for that country. You'll also need to check that you have the correct duration for your trip as they vary in length.
You may need 3 different permits if you are travelling to different countries! At the moment international drivers have 12 months to drive in the UK under the current laws.
Visit our website: SWAN AND SOTO for articles and links to content!
There will be changes in Ireland. IDP 1949 after 12 months of being in the country.
Soto discusses his licence and asks whether I still have mine - no, Soto I do not! Introduction to our episode.
Brexit Special
If you currently have a UK licence but currently live in an EU country you can't expect to use an IDP for living in that country. You should aim to exchange your UK licence for a local one where this applies.
One thing for sure - it is very confusing, so you'll need to make sure you have researched yet! We do NOT know yet what the deals are - so please keep checking the details of your local country.
Learning to drive in Europe
Black market driving licences abroad - to be careful.
Who has the safest roads in the world?
Per billion miles driven - Sweden has the safest roads in the World - and the UK comes second to Sweden.
Per million inhabitants in Europe - Norway has the safest roads. UK comes 4!
Learning to drive in France
The driving schools are controlled by the government! They can't control their own prices. The government sets the prices and conditions of the school. To learn to drive in France you need to apply to the school in question and become a member of the driving school. They have a compulsory 20 hours of training signed off - by the driving instructor. As it's not commercial (AKA like the UK) there are no bending the rules. Driving instructors tend to be more well-off in France.
They also state 40 hours is needed to pass the driving test. But not everyone can afford 40 hours, or they live in a remote part of France and can't travel to their local driving school. To help the youngsters - the government introduced a lesson loan system. The pupil pays 1 euro a lesson to have a lesson which helps people in rural communities get licensed and therefore get on the road to find jobs and pay taxes. Another scheme they have to help is to allow the pupil to have private practice with mum and dad! Parent's have to have training with the driving instructor before being allowed out with learner drivers.
Would this work in the UK?
Learning to Drive in Europe
There are lots of different rules across Europe. With some countries having a minimum hour of training in the classroom.
In Germany you need to have 12 compulsory 'special lessons':
Private practice is banned in Germany. You need to have driving lessons with a driving instructor.
In Spain, the driving test is a 'group' driving test. The examiner will go out with 2-3 pupils and all take turns to drive for approx 20 mins each.
In Sweden, you can ONLY do private practice with someone over the age of 24 who has 5 years of driving experience, unlike the UK which is 21 years old and 3 years minimum driving.
In Norway, it recommends getting a UK licence as their licence is one of the hardest to get in the world! (blog)
We also have one of our prank calls with the lovely Barbara!
We hope you enjoy this prank call with Barbara!
Until next time x
Hi and welcome to another show with Swan and Soto - in this episode we discuss getting old and how to not sing Happ Birthday (the normal rubbish and banter we always do!)
In this episode, we also chat about botox - why I wear sunglasses in the winter and looking much younger than I actually am! We also chat about theory test struggles and how to pass your theory test.
How a learner driver struggled to pass his theory test. He kept failing the questions by 3-4 marks. The hazard perception part was fine, however - after a few attempts, he was passing the theory questions but not the hazard perception test. He became so familiar with where the hazards were he was clicking the mouse toe early!
Is it possible to become too familiar with hazard perception clips on multiple clips?
James interview
Do the DVSA recycle their hazard perception clips? Wait to find out...
Soto is collecting L plates on his car and wants to be more visible!
Do people actually talk about failing a test online! Why? We all celebrate passes (rightly so) but, fails - it is a learning curve!
Failed his test a test for not stopping at the 'wait here' sign at roadworks traffic lights.
Soto had a 'passer' on his 4th attempt - now can get on with his life! We all have failed and passes!
Let's talk about the 'pheasant fail' - how a pupil did an emergency stop for a pheasant!
Highway code states you MUST have your hands on the steering wheel at all times! Unless stationary in traffic! Soto's pupil believes he failed already and then goes onto fail for taking his hands off the wheel!
We discuss our test fails in detail! Especially no entry signs on country lanes! Not making progress on country lanes and how my student diverted his direction due to not liking a road!
We also chat about driving examiner's language on the driving test and how you can fail for the show me tell me questions!
"When it safe to do so, can you show me how you would..."
People do ask: Can you fail for the show me tell me questions?" Technically no, but the one on the move you could!
Practice adjusting the lights, the fog lights, the demisters and of course the washer wipers when on your driving lessons so that you can become familiar with using them on the move!
Soto's pupil asks about a 'no overtaking roadsign' believing that the pupil thought red cars can't overtake black cars!
Some of the things that we have coming up!
See you next week! Thanks for supporting us!
Thank you for joining our podcast show today! Our show is a compilation of our previous 10 shows!
Jokes: from the 'internet'.
What do two yellow lines on the curb mean? Does Soto know this answer????
Disabled drivers are not allowed to park on the curb when the yellow lines go up onto the curb!
Soto shares his car parking ticket story! We give you hints and tips and help you know how to get out of parking tickets!
We discuss how automatic cars have a lower driving test pass rate over manual cars.
We the UK become automatic ONLY? We discuss how the market changes!
Should driving lessons be recorded? Due to allegations against driving instructors on driving lessons? We have a look from the male perspective as to what it is like on a driving lesson.
We interview 'quit your bitching' driving school name! He states about how people moan about learners on the road. "You were a learner once!"
He even has a tattoo on his arm!
We discuss the biggest speeding fine in the UK!
One million pounds speeding fine of the largest speeding ticket in the world! From Sweden.
Driving lessons in a limousine! With Ricky the wonderful driving instructor!
You are in for a real treat! Please leave us a review and help us share this show!

Thank you for joining us this in this episode. In today's episode, we discuss fraudulent driving instructors and how to spot them! A video went viral on Facebook! What should pupils be aware of? Ho can learners check that their driving instructor is legit!
There are two types of driving instructor!
PDI and ADI
PDI is a driving instructor in training
ADI is a fully qualified driving instructor
If your driving instructor has no badge in their car's window - then you should steer clear. Ask where their badge is.
What are the implications of having driving lessons with an 'instructor' who isn't qualified? Insurance is invalidated.
The badge enables the instructor to take payment for the lesson.
Visit the DVSA website for more details.
889 cases of fraudulent tests recorded of driving tests being sat by other people. 500% increase.
Sometimes the pupil's picture is NOT showcasing the pupil's real identity as licences are taken when students are very young.
The examiners didn't question the pupil's image on his driving licence and took him out on their driving test.
Is the system in place actually working?
Teenagers lose weight, gain weight, change their hairstyles - what are the DVSA actually doing to resolve this situation.
Should the DVSA stop taking pictures from passports?
In this show we also prank the lovely driving instructor called Ricky - who was featured in 'the all-star driving school' and Soto pretends to be a famous Cypriot singer student who is famous and needs to have driving lessons in a limousine!
And, he completely fell for it!
We also discuss teaching daughter's to drive! Mum and dad driving school! Stay tuned for the journey of my daughter's driving lessons and how I get on with being her mum!
Until next time, thanks for listening!

Hi and welcome to another edition of the Swan & Soto show! In today's podcast show we discuss :
The 10 reasons why a learner driver fails their driving test
Every year about 1.5 million driving tests are conducted in the UK. With a pass rate of only 47%, many more tests fail than pass. Soto and I wanted to share with you our top reasons for failing a driving test and give you many examples of what a learner may do to get a serious fault in these areas. For a more detailed account please visit our website https://www.swanandsoto.com/
10 - Response to road markings (section 17) * Landing in a box junction when you are not permitted * Double yellow lines * Solid white lines * Single yellow lines
9 - Control when moving away (section 13) * Stall at a roundabout whilst going over the give-way markings (where you end up) * Rolling backwards (hill start)
8 - Turning right (section 21) * Major to minor turns (cutting corners) * Turning right at roundabouts (lane discipline, lane control, judgement)
7 - General road position (section 23) * Roundabouts - lane discipline * Left and right at t-junctions * Go over the centre white line when turning right * Major to minor right - cutting corners
6 - Steering (section 12) * Mounting the curb, oversteering (back wheels taking a shorter course than the front wheels) * Allowing the steering wheel to slip back your hands * Under steering - wide in the new road (cause and effect)
5 - Response to traffic lights (section 17) * Stopping over the white line (when lights change to red) * Going when you had time to stop (when lights change to red) * Not going on a green light * Slowing unnecessary (inviting the traffic lights to change)
4 - Reverse parking (section 5) * Being too wide * Go back too far - leaving too much space! (no more than 2 car lengths) * Left the car too close to the parked car and need to reverse * Clipping the curb
3 - The use of mirrors (section 14) * Not looking prior to slowing down * Not responding to what you see when speeding up (overtaking vehicles from behind) * Not checking mirrors prior to signals (repeat minors add up and become serious/fail) * Not checking wing mirrors when pulling around blockages and parked vehicles
2 - Observation moving away (section 13) * Not checking blind spots * Not checking both blind spots after the emergency stop exercise
1 - Observation at junctions (section 21) * Looking well before proceeding out of a junction/roundabout /crossroads * Not judging correctly when coming out of a junction/roundabout/crossroads * Making someone slow down as a result of emerging too early * Being too hesitant * Not accelerating enough when you come out a little bit too early (a minor becomes serious)
We hope you have found this show useful - please can you share this podcast show with anyone who may find it useful also, and please if you can spare two minutes and leave a review on the platform that you found this podcast, we would be super greatful.
Until next time,

What happens if you don't pay your car insurance? Listen to one pupil's journey after she did just that!
Emma lost her licence for not having car insurance. She was a little skint so cancelled the direct debit. Unfortunately, she was caught and lost her driving licence. Two years later she was finally able to get back behind the wheel when she passed her driving test with a clean sheet.
Emma shares her story on how it impacted her life and stopped her from progressing in her career. She advises on what to do when it comes to retaking a driving test and getting back behind the wheel!
Why a clean sheet is a big deal to driving instructors, and what it means! It is a rare commodity for a driving instructor to get a clean sheet. Personally, I didn't have one for 13 years and then all of a sudden got lots and lots! Passing your test is a special moment, so why not do it in style and be the best there is!
We also answer your burning questions on how to pass a driving test in the UK! Please listen, like and comment and share with us your views. We hope you enjoy the show!
In next week's show, we are chatting about HPI checks - and ceased cars! Keep tuned!
