A belated Happy Valentines Day to everyone!

Because we love our orgs might as well make a podcast for them!

Being part of a student org is challenging (I know because I have been a former PIASA National VP myself from 2012 to 2014). As student leaders of an organization, he/ she is in a peculiar situation of not only thinking of his/ her academic life and welfare but also the welfare of many of its members, something that is almost impossible to do in a fast-paced world. Not only that, the additional burden *ehem, workload rather, from outside the school can be a multi-tasking logistical nightmare at some point. Episode 5 of M+P the host invited some of the student leaders from a variety of architecture student orgs in the country to

(1) get to know each other,

(2) create an opportunity to have a short dialogue about being architecture student & being a student leader as well,

(3) talk about some challenges of being a future architect in the Philippines, and much more.

This podcast has no other motivation but to create a record of correspondence between the existing organizations of its current time, and just a passion project (inspired with the same spirit as the punkrock “zines” of the 80s, guerilla radio of the 90s, and GeoCities of 00s).

Architizer's One Drawing Challenge 2019 winner Caleb Ong is a good friend of mine who practice architecture in his hometown Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we talked about his design process for his winning entry The Unending Square with bits of sharing of experiences about life in our cities during covid, Christmas in Malaysia and PH, Ken Yeang, etc. We could've talked longer but I guess other stuffs can be booked for another episode. Thank you very much, Ar. Ong!

Background: Caleb Ong is a Malaysian-based architectural designer working to being further specialized in architecture. He works with client (mostly architect at the moment) by providing creative architectural design idea and solution to achieve the client's business and personal goals. He is currently working with Ar.Lee Cherng Yih of Formzero on design and construction of three design-intensive bungalow projects, while at the same time participating in competitions, partaking freelance or personal research projects in collaboration with other architects and designers such as Axial Design Works and HWA!. At the same time, he is running Caleb Ong Design, a small architectural design studio that is formed in October 2018, working on his personal research project. His main goal at the moment is to be a licensed Architect under the Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia while continuing to deepen his expertise in architectural design and further refine his design philosophy.

Caleb Ong has completed his Master in Architecture at Taylor’s University in 2018. Caleb accumulated two years of working experience under Dr. Ken Yeang at T. R. Hamzah & Yeang Sdn. Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur. Born in 1992 in Kuala Lumpur, his passion lies among the many aspects of art and design idea creation. His worldview is that everybody has a right to believe in what they want to believe and to think about what they want to think. Caleb is stimulated in the different point of views between the various field of people and is always looking forward to learning, collaborate and provide with others in the endeavor of bettering the world. His inner compass orientates himself towards the realm of ideation that takes risk among the unexplored real and fictional worlds that often produces an unpredictable result.

One of many great architects coming out of the University of Santo Tomas, Ar. Recio graduate in 1975 and immediately worked to Hong Kong with Eric Cumine Associates, Wong Tung Internasional, and M. Moser Associates, Ltd. After his extensive experience with these international firms he took his own destiny and along with Ar. Carmelo Casas founded RECIO+CASAS, Ltd. In the early 90s Ar. Recio moved back to the Philippines and worked with some of the high-profile architecture projects like the Church of Gesu and the New Rizal Library in Ateneo de Manila University, Shangrila Boracay, the Stratford Residences, and Twin Oaks Palace, among others. In 2008, Ar. Recio established RCHITECTS, Inc. a profesional architectural firm where he remains as Principal, leading a team of architects to deliver retail, residental, hospitality and institutional projects. I met Ar. Bong Recio at White Children’s Home in San Juan City; the event was an awarding on a design competition that we organized back in 2012. We inspected Ocampo’s design and he specifically noticed how high the ceilings are; perhaps he’s thinking about the advances on fire safety and space efficiency? Sir Bong, Ar. Recio, or simply “Recio” is a brand of architecture known for its clean lines and well ordered modernist architecture. His friendly demeanor can be inspiring. Despite great achievements you can still be relatable and approachable to the next generation.
