This week Clayton, Tamzyn and Sam cast a light out into the cosmic void with their Beacon 23 review. It’s unanimous the team are missing Lena Heady in this season, all agree her character was the glue that held the first series together. Season two has a different vibe and the team are not sure its a good one. The introduction of a new character is definitely a plus and special mention for the fantastic and creepy AI episode. If you watched series one, you will probably want to watch this series, its not as good, however it is the last, so enjoy!

Deadpool and Wolverine – Review.

The team gets all geeky with one of the most anticipated films for 2024. Sam was intrigued by the hype around the chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman and they were not disappointed. Miranda’s not sure she likes her fan service as a main course, she prefers it as a dessert. Clayton believes this is a beautiful swan song to the Fox era of Marvel productions and it nails that element. Tamzyn sums it up perfectly, such fun! Is this review as much fun as the film? The team agrees with Clayton, this is a horror film every horror fan should see because it will stimulate a lot of conversations. Sam found it a really interesting subversion of a slasher film. Miranda thinks, following the perspective of the killer is an interesting film experiment, but as a popcorn viewer it’s not much more than that. Tune in to hear all the rest.

Longlegs Review.

This week, the show is so jam-packed that we have split it into three podcasts.

Clayton and Tamzyn follow Nicolas Cage as the serial killer in Longlegs. They both agree it’s unlike any horror film they have seen in a long while. Though it’s not hugely original, it is subversive—go watch it if you can without seeing the trailer. It’s not necessarily scary, but it is very tense throughout the whole film. Great performances from the cast, with an intentional style that enhances the suspense. Clayton says, “I think it’s Nick Cage’s best performance ever,” which is saying something, as we know Clayton is not a Cage fan.

Fly Me to the MOON and Twisters Reviews.

This week, the show is so jam-packed that we have split it into three podcasts.
Tamzyn sets her sights on the stars with Fly Me to the Moon, and then Miranda and Clayton do the twist again in the weather-bending Twisters.

Tamzyn loved the 60’s vibe, with gorgeous music and design in Fly Me to the Moon. Woody Harrelson is epic as the agent always listening in; yes, conspiratorial action abounds. The film includes a very respectful nod to Apollo 1. Keep a close watch to see the use of real footage in a moon landing scene, which brings a new depth to the film.

Miranda and Clayton exclaim Twisters is not a sequel nor a remake; it’s a stand-alone film. Apart from the fact twisters exist in both universes, that’s the only similarity. There are no surprises in the story-line, but the special effects deliver—they will literally blow you away.

Dr Cat interview, A Quiet Place: Day One and The Boys – Season 4 Reviews.

First up Dr. Cat, from Joy Radio’s new Tuesday night show “Science Queeries,” drops into the studio for a fun interview, revealing some of their quirky science facts about lightning. The excitement ramps up when Clayton conducts a rapid-fire round of questions, which Dr. Cat handles with ease. By the end of the interview, the Geeks Out team convinces Dr. Cat to watch more TV and films in their downtime. Don’t miss the first episode of “Science Queeries,” Tuesdays at 6 pm on Joy.

Next up, the team reviews “A Quiet Place: Day One.” Miranda quips, “It’s hard to put together a trailer for a quiet film,” which sparks an important discussion about noise etiquette in cinemas. Just as opinions start to turn into outrage, Sam brings the conversation back to the review, noting their affinity with the lead character’s obsession with finding a good slice of pizza. The team agrees that ASMR fans will be delighted with this prequel and that part of the film’s charm lies in its silence, quiet action, and jump scares.

Doctor Who Wrap Up, The Acolyte, and a Few Good Book Reviews

This week we kick off with a Whovian fest with a look back at season 14 of Doctor Who – hold on for major SPOILER ALERTS!

All the talk is around a massive moment featuring a groundbreaking kiss. The team agrees that the strength of the show lies in the relationship between the Doctor and Ruby, rather than the writing. Clayton reveals the episode he was planning to hate but ended up liking, while Tamzyn shares that she enjoyed the episode everyone else hated – yes, it’s “Space Babies.” Sam and Miranda couldn’t make it this week but have sent in their thoughts for the team to ponder.

Then it’s over to “The Acolyte” Where all agree the show has a great cast of actors, and Tamzyn adds that “the bonus here is you can enjoy this series without knowing much about the Star Wars universe”. It’s one of the first live-action series to explore the High Republic era outside of books and comics.Clayton becomes obsessed with figuring out the ages of well-known Star Wars characters in this series, leading to a fun rabbit hole for listeners to journey down. A must for any fan or even a first timer to the Star Wars universe.

Finally, the discussion shifts to some good books, with Clayton and Tamzyn delving into the twisted worlds of the latest Stephen King book, “You Like It Darker.” This book features a collection of short stories and novellas. The team enjoys the stories and contemplates which ones could be turned into a movie or series. Clayton reveals that one of the stories, “Rattle Snake,” is in part a sequel to “Cujo,” which happens to be Tamzyn’s first horror film! The fun continues with Clayton’s latest good reads.

To say Tamzyn is a Despicable Me fan is an understatement, join in the crazy fun as Tamzyn unpacks this delightful movie. Apparently, the only time kids were not fully engaged in the movie was when they left to go to the loo – that’s a five-star rating for a kid’s movie. Just when you thought we couldn’t get any Geekier Tamzyn explains Mega Minions and the Megaverse! The pressing question is will Tamzyn turn her temporary tattoo of a minion into real ink?

Sweet Tooth Season 3 Review
The team have enjoyed all three series and have a great discussion around the allegories within. Sam notes that Sweet Tooth has positioned the powerful people that perpetrate eugenics and intolerance of difference as villains, and Gus stands in opposition to them as a voice for embracing and empowering difference. It’s Sam’s hope that we can carry some of this into the real world. As always, this conversation delivers important perspectives from the fabulously diverse Geek team.

The First Omen, Geek Girl, Eric and Oz Comic Con – Reviews

First up, Sam guides us through a sea of cosplay costumes at this year’s ultimate geek festival, OZ Comic Con, with some delightful tales about their favourite presenters at the Q&A sessions. The most important question is will Sam be able to match the energy of John Barrowman?

Clayton and Tamzyn discuss the origins of “The First Omens” story. With a strong homage to the original movie and the use of music to great horror effect, it’s a thumbs up for this horror re-take. However, Clayton was not too impressed with the Latin pronunciations.

Tamzin, Sam, and Clayton joyfully skip down the Geeky Lane into a review of “Geek Girl.” The team agrees that for authentic representation of autism, this one hits the spot. The discussion point about inner monologues represented by voice-overs is not to be missed.

Finally, the big Geek question: To Cumberbatch or not to Cumberbatch? that is the question the geek team debates. How do you deal with an unlikable protagonist? The new drama series “Eric” splits the team. Do I have to like the actor to enjoy the show? Do I have to like the character to engage in the story? The discussion reveals that the adaptation surpasses the source material and delves into why anime comics sometimes lack depth in minor characters. Additionally, it’s noted that the show’s violence exceeds Clayton’s usual preferences.

Then, we dive into “The Transformers: The Movie.” Is it merely a glorified toy commercial? Who cares when it’s so enjoyable to revisit? Dust off your Transformer toys, grab a bowl of popcorn, and indulge in this 1986 cinematic treat.

Miranda would like to issues an apology for mistakenly stating the release date of “Transformers: The Movie” as 1984 instead of 1986 on air. For this ‘crime,’ Miranda has been sentenced to the planet Accurate, a forbidding interplanetary prison colony, to serve 1,000 years in repentance. However, with time off for great reviewing, Miranda will be back next week.
