What is a capital loss or a capital gain?
Capital gains are taxed at special rates, lower rates. At least long term capital gains are. Short term is taxed at regular rates.
How can I take advantage of timing to pay less in tax now?
Here near the end of the year though, you can have a bit of a timing benefit. If you have some stocks you have been meaning to sell at a loss, well you can do so now, and come tax time you will reap the benefit, which isn’t too far away.
And alternatively, if you have some winning stocks and what to sell or rebalance, you can sell them in January, and then you don’t have to pay tax on it for over a year.

Tips for someone under SSDI
The big takeaways are
Know what you are spending on what each month. You can do it in google sheets like me, or use another tool that helps automate it, lime mint.
Have an emergency fund. Emergencies come up, be ready. 3-6 months of expenses is ideal
Invest the excess, just saving money isn’t enough, you need to invest it. In fact, due to inflation, you money may even lose value if it is just in a bank account.
And there are almost always ways to make a little more money. Making money doesn’t have to be draining, you can find more enjoyable ways to do it.

I saw this article online and it irritated me a bit. First it talks about how you can invest and choose your stocks. It continues and says to invest in a 529 or roth ira etc. However these are not really investments, they are vehicles for investment.
Let's talk about that. So in your roth ira, you can invest in stocks or bonds or whatever you want. There are even options to invest in real estate, but I'm not an expert on that. The point is, you don't really invest in an ira, that's just the vehicle for your investment. You can pick the actual investment and even change to another one.

In this episode I share my thoughts on budgeting and using credit cards. Most budgeting advice is total nonsense, splitting money between a food fund, a laundry fund, a fun fund, etc. I have a much simpler system. I personally use a Quicksilver cash back card and you can get one too.
