Ecc 9:11 Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.
Ecc 9:2 It is the same for all, since the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.Ecc 9:3 This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that the same event happens to all. Also, the hearts of the children of man are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
Ecc 9:1 But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God. Whether it is love or hate, man does not know; both are before him.
Ecc 8:16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night do one's eyes see sleep,Ecc 8:17 then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out. Even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out.
Ecc 8:15 And I commend joy, for man has nothing better under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.
Ecc 8:14 There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.
Ecc 8:13 But it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God.
Ecc 8:12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him.
Ecc 8:11 Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.
Ecc 8:10 Then I saw the wicked buried. They used to go in and out of the holy place and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.

Ecc 7:21 Also, do not take seriously all words which are spoken, so that you will not hear your servant cursing you.
Ecc 7:20 Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins.
Ecc 7:16 Do not be excessively righteous and do not be overly wise. Why should you ruin yourself?Ecc 7:17 Do not be excessively wicked and do not be a fool. Why should you die before your time?Ecc 7:18 It is good that you grasp one thing and also not let go of the other; for the one who fears God comes forth with both of them.
Ecc 7:14 In the day of prosperity be happy, But in the day of adversity consider—God has made the one as well as the other So that man will not discover anything that will be after him.
Ecc 7:15 I have seen everything during my lifetime of futility; there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his wickedness.

Ecc 5:4 When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow.Ecc 5:5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.
Ecc 5:1 Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil.Ecc 5:2 Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.
Ecc 4:13 Better was a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knew how to take advice.Ecc 4:14 For he went from prison to the throne, though in his own kingdom he had been born poor.Ecc 4:15 I saw all the living who move about under the sun, along with that youth who was to stand in the king's place.Ecc 4:16 There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Ecc 4:9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.Ecc 4:10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!Ecc 4:11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone?Ecc 4:12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Ecc 4:7 Again, I saw vanity under the sun:Ecc 4:8 one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, “For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business.
Ecc 4:5 The fool folds his hands and eats his own flesh.Ecc 4:6 Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.
Ecc 4:4 Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Ecc 4:1 Again I saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.Ecc 4:2 And I thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive.Ecc 4:3 But better than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.
Ecc 3:21 Who knows that the breath of man ascends upward and the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth?Ecc 3:22 I have seen that nothing is better than that man should be happy in his activities, for that is his lot. For who will bring him to see what will occur after him?
Ecc 3:18 I said to myself concerning the sons of men, "God has surely tested them in order for them to see that they are but beasts."Ecc 3:19 For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same. As one dies so dies the other; indeed, they all have the same breath and there is no advantage for man over beast, for all is vanity.Ecc 3:20 All go to the same place. All came from the dust and all return to the dust.
Ecc 3:17 I said to myself, "God will judge both the righteous man and the wicked man," for a time for every matter and for every deed is there.
Ecc 3:16 Furthermore, I have seen under the sun that in the place of justice there is wickedness and in the place of righteousness there is wickedness.
Ecc 3:15 That which is has been already and that which will be has already been, for God seeks what has passed by.
Ecc 3:14 I know that everything God does will remain forever; there is nothing to add to it and there is nothing to take from it, for God has so worked that men should fear Him.
Ecc 3:13 moreover, that every man who eats and drinks sees good in all his labor—it is the gift of God.
Ecc 3:12 I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in one's lifetime;
Ecc 3:11 He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.
Ecc 3:9 What profit is there to the worker from that in which he toils?Ecc 3:10 I have seen the task which God has given the sons of men with which to occupy themselves.
Ecc 3:7 A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; A time to be silent and a time to speak.
Ecc 3:5 A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing.
Ecc 3:1 There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven—Ecc 3:2 A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.
Ecc 2:22 For what does a man get in all his labor and in his striving with which he labors under the sun?Ecc 2:23 Because all his days his task is painful and grievous; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is vanity.Ecc 2:24 There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink and tell himself that his labor is good. This also I have seen that it is from the hand of God.Ecc 2:25 For who can eat and who can have enjoyment without Him?Ecc 2:26 For to a person who is good in His sight He has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, while to the sinner He has given the task of gathering and collecting so that he may give to one who is good in God's sight. This too is vanity and striving after wind.
Ecc 2:21 When there is a man who has labored with wisdom, knowledge and skill, then he gives his legacy to one who has not labored with them. This too is vanity and a great evil.
Ecc 2:19 And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the fruit of my labor for which I have labored by acting wisely under the sun. This too is vanity.
Ecc 2:18 Thus I hated all the fruit of my labor for which I had labored under the sun, for I must leave it to the man who will come after me.
Ecc 2:16 For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise man as with the fool, inasmuch as inthe coming days all will be forgotten. And how the wise man and the fool alike die!Ecc 2:17 So I hated life, for the work which had been done under the sun was grievous to me; because everything is futility and striving after wind.
Ecc 2:13 And I saw that wisdom excels folly as light excels darkness.Ecc 2:14 The wise man's eyes are in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I know that one fate befalls them both.
Ecc 2:11 Thus I considered all my activities which my hands had done and the labor which I had exerted, and behold all was vanity and striving after wind and there was no profit under the sun.Ecc 2:12 So I turned to consider wisdom, madness and folly; for what will the man do who will come after the king except what has already been done?
Ecc 2:9 Then I became great and increased more than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also stood by me.
Ecc 2:3 I explored with my mind how to stimulate my body with wine while my mind was guiding me wisely, and how to take hold of folly, until I could see what good there is for the sons of men to do under heaven the few years of their lives.
Ecc 2:1 I said to myself, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure. So enjoy yourself." And behold, it too was futility.Ecc 2:2 I said of laughter, "It is madness," and of pleasure, "What does it accomplish?"

Good words to live by, especially in our everyday lives where a situation challenges us, we remember the fool can’t keep their cool, but the wise person is able to conceal their emotions.

Psa 15:1 A psalm of David. Who may worship in your sanctuary, LORD? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?Psa 15:2 Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.Psa 15:3 Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends.Psa 15:4 Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honor the faithful followers of the LORD, and keep their promises even when it hurts.Psa 15:5 Those who lend money without charging interest, and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent. Such people will stand firm forever.
Psa 14:7 Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores His captive people, Jacob will rejoice, Israel will be glad.
Psa 14:6 The wicked frustrate the plans of the oppressed, but the LORD will protect his people.
Psa 14:4 Will those who do evil never learn? They eat up my people like bread and wouldn’t think of praying to the LORD.Psa 14:5 Terror will grip them, for God is with those who obey him.
Psa 14:2 The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God.Psa 14:3 They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one.
Psa 14:1 For the choir director: A psalm of David. Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good!
Psa 13:3 Consider and answer me, O LORD my God; Enlighten my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death,Psa 13:4 And my enemy will say, "I have overcome him," And my adversaries will rejoice when I am shaken.Psa 13:5 But I have trusted in Your lovingkindness; My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.Psa 13:6 I will sing to the LORD, Because He has dealt bountifully with me.
As David is dealing with his enemies, it would seem that they have the advantage and David is quite discouraged as we read in our Psalms today:

Psa 12:7 Therefore, LORD, we know you will protect the oppressed, preserving them forever from this lying generation,Psa 12:8 even though the wicked strut about, and evil is praised throughout the land.
Psa 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words; As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.
Psa 12:4 They say, “We will lie to our hearts’ content. Our lips are our own—who can stop us?”Psa 12:5 The LORD replies, “I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.”

Psa 11:5 The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked, And the one who loves violence His soul hates.Psa 11:6 Upon the wicked He will rain snares; Fire and brimstone and burning wind will be the portion of their cup.Psa 11:7 For the LORD is righteous, He loves righteousness; The upright will behold His face.

So why do you say to me, “Fly like a bird to the mountains for safety!Psa 11:2 The wicked are stringing their bows and fitting their arrows on the bowstrings. What can the righteous do?”Psa 11:4 But the LORD is in his holy Temple; the LORD still rules from heaven. He watches everyone closely, examining every person on earth.
Psa 10:17 LORD, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them.Psa 10:18 You will bring justice to the orphans and the oppressed, so mere people can no longer terrify them.
Psa 10:16 The LORD is king forever and ever! The godless nations will vanish from the land.
Psa 10:12 Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted.Psa 10:13 Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”?Psa 10:14 But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless.Psa 10:15 Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none.
Psa 10:10 He crouches, he bows down, And the unfortunate fall by his mighty ones.Psa 10:11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; He has hidden His face; He will never see it."
Psa 10:8 They lurk in ambush in the villages, waiting to murder innocent people. They are always searching for helpless victims.Psa 10:9 Like lions crouched in hiding, they wait to pounce on the helpless. Like hunters they capture the helpless and drag them away in nets.

Psa 9:18 For the needy will not always be forgotten, Nor the hope of the afflicted perish forever.

It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.

Eat your food with joy, and drink your wine with a happy heart, for God approves of this!Ecc 9:8 Wear fine clothes, with a splash of cologne!Ecc 9:9 Live happily with the woman you love through all the meaningless days of life that God has given you under the sun. Ecc 9:2 The same destiny ultimately awaits everyone, whether righteous or wicked, good or bad, ceremonially clean or unclean, religious or irreligious. Good people receive the same treatment as sinners, and people who make promises to God are treated like people who don’t.Ecc 9:3 It seems so wrong that everyone under the sun suffers the same fate. Already twisted by evil, people choose their own mad course, for they have no hope. There is nothing ahead but death anyway.
Ecc 9:1 For I have taken all this to my heart and explain it that righteous men, wise men, and their deeds are in the hand of God. Man does not know whether it will be love or hatred; anything awaits him.
Ecc 8:16 In my search for wisdom and in my observation of people’s burdens here on earth, I discovered that there is ceaseless activity, day and night.Ecc 8:17 I realized that no one can discover everything God is doing under the sun. Not even the wisest people discover everything, no matter what they claim.
Ecc 8:15 So I commended pleasure, for there is nothing good for a man under the sun except to eat and to drink and to be merry, and this will stand by him in his toils throughout the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.
Ecc 8:14 There is futility which is done on the earth, that is, there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked. On the other hand, there are evil men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I say that this too is futility.

Ecc 8:8 No man has power to retain the spirit, or power over the day of death. There is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it.Ecc 8:9 All this I observed while applying my heart to all that is done under the sun, when man had power over man to his hurt.
Ecc 8:6 For there is a proper time and procedure for every delight, though a man's trouble is heavy upon him.

Ecc 7:23 I have always tried my best to let wisdom guide my thoughts and actions. I said to myself, “I am determined to be wise.” But it didn’t work.Ecc 7:24 Wisdom is always distant and difficult to find.Ecc 7:25 I searched everywhere, determined to find wisdom and to understand the reason for things. I was determined to prove to myself that wickedness is stupid and that foolishness is madness.
Ecc 7:21 Also, do not take seriously all words which are spoken, so that you will not hear your servant cursing you.
Ecc 7:20 Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins.
Ecc 7:16 So don’t be too good or too wise! Why destroy yourself?Ecc 7:17 On the other hand, don’t be too wicked either. Don’t be a fool! Why die before your time?Ecc 7:18 Pay attention to these instructions, for anyone who fears God will avoid both extremes.
Ecc 7:15 I have seen everything in this meaningless life, including the death of good young people and the long life of wicked people.

Ecc 6:8 So are wise people really better off than fools? Do poor people gain anything by being wise and knowing how to act in front of others?
Ecc 6:3 If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, however many they be, but his soul is not satisfied with good things and he does not even have a proper burial, then I say, "Better the miscarriage than he,Ecc 6:4 for it comes in futility and goes into obscurity; and its name is covered in obscurity.Ecc 6:5 "It never sees the sun and it never knows anything; it is better off than he.Ecc 6:6 "Even if the other man lives a thousand years twice and does not enjoy good things—do not all go to one place?"
Ecc 6:1 There is another serious tragedy I have seen under the sun, and it weighs heavily on humanity.Ecc 6:2 God gives some people great wealth and honor and everything they could ever want, but then he doesn’t give them the chance to enjoy these things. They die, and someone else, even a stranger, ends up enjoying their wealth! This is meaningless—a sickening tragedy.
Ecc 5:20 God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.
Ecc 5:19 And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God.
Ecc 5:18 Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life.
Ecc 5:17 Throughout his life he also eats in darkness with great vexation, sickness and anger.
Ecc 5:15 We all come to the end of our lives as naked and empty-handed as on the day we were born. We can’t take our riches with us.Ecc 5:16 And this, too, is a very serious problem. People leave this world no better off than when they came. All their hard work is for nothing—like working for the wind.
Ecc 5:13 There is another serious problem I have seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.Ecc 5:14 Money is put into risky investments that turn sour, and everything is lost. In the end, there is nothing left to pass on to one’s children.
Ecc 5:12 The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, Whether he eats little or much; But the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep.
Ecc 5:11 When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?
Ecc 5:10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income. This too is vanity.
Ecc 5:9 Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field.
Ecc 5:8 Don’t be surprised if you see a poor person being oppressed by the powerful and if justice is being miscarried throughout the land. For every official is under orders from higher up, and matters of justice get lost in red tape and bureaucracy.
Ecc 5:6 Don’t let your mouth make you sin. And don’t defend yourself by telling the Temple messenger that the promise you made was a mistake. That would make God angry, and he might wipe out everything you have achieved.Ecc 5:7 Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities. Fear God instead.
Ecc 5:4 When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow.Ecc 5:5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.
Ecc 5:1 As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut. It is evil to make mindless offerings to God.Ecc 5:2 Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few.
Ecc 4:13 It is better to be a poor but wise youth than an old and foolish king who refuses all advice.Ecc 4:14 Such a youth could rise from poverty and succeed. He might even become king, though he has been in prison.Ecc 4:15 But then everyone rushes to the side of yet another youth who replaces him.Ecc 4:16 Endless crowds stand around him, but then another generation grows up and rejects him, too. So it is all meaningless—like chasing the wind.
Ecc 4:9 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.Ecc 4:10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.Ecc 4:11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone?Ecc 4:12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
Ecc 4:7 I observed yet another example of something meaningless under the sun.Ecc 4:8 This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself, “Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing.
Ecc 4:5 “Fools fold their idle hands, leading them to ruin.”Ecc 4:6 And yet, “Better to have one handful with quietness than two handfuls with hard work and chasing the wind.”
Ecc 4:4 Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless—like chasing the wind.
Ecc 4:1 Again, I observed all the oppression that takes place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power, and their victims are helpless.Ecc 4:2 So I concluded that the dead are better off than the living.Ecc 4:3 But most fortunate of all are those who are not yet born. For they have not seen all the evil that is done under the sun.
Ecc 3:21 For who can prove that the human spirit goes up and the spirit of animals goes down into the earth?Ecc 3:22 So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work. That is our lot in life. And no one can bring us back to see what happens after we die.
Ecc 3:18 I also thought about the human condition—how God proves to people that they are like animals.Ecc 3:19 For people and animals share the same fate—both breathe and both must die. So people have no real advantage over the animals. How meaningless!Ecc 3:20 Both go to the same place—they came from dust and they return to dust.
Ecc 3:17 I said to myself, “In due season God will judge everyone, both good and bad, for all their deeds.”
Ecc 3:16 I also noticed that under the sun there is evil in the courtroom. Yes, even the courts of law are corrupt!
Ecc 3:15 What is happening now has happened before, and what will happen in the future has happened before, because God makes the same things happen over and over again.
Ecc 3:14 And I know that whatever God does is final. Nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God’s purpose is that people should fear him.
Ecc 3:13 also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man.
