In a world filled with stress and pressure to perform, anxiety about cultural expectations, and depression from being isolated to a screen, the culture in America is killing our teenagers from the inside out. Our purpose is to provide hope and inspiration by taking the Hope of Christ to Every Student. We want to provide teens a place to belong, opportunities to make a positive difference, and bring life-changing transformation to their life and to those around them. It is our core focus to help 300,000 students in 4,650 different schools experience the hope of Christ by December 31, 2023. This podcast is part of our strategy to get the word out to the believers of Jesus in the United States to help encourage, equip and empower the Christian students to share their hope in Christ with their peers. Debi DeBoer has been on staff for the past 26 years and is now serving as Ministry Director for The Greater Birmingham area. She got involved with campus ministry when there was a void of students at her local church. Why should the church expect people to come to us when God commanded us to "Go and make disciples..." ? What a privilege to train and equip students and develop the leader within. Debi is passionate about this generation and wants to make sure they are grounded in biblical truth and not a product of the culture around them.
She is a mother of three children, Lindi, Lani and Joppe and is happily married to James DeBoer. She enjoys reading, traveling, relaxing at the lake, and spending time with friends and family.

Preston Styons is the 2nd First Priority scholarship recipient and is from North Carolina. Preston has served in leadership roles with his local First Priority club since the 6th grade and will be continuing his education at a Christian university and hopes to continue to lead for the Lord.

Brad and Steve recently traveled to Cincinnati to attend First Priority of Cincinnati’s luncheon. In this podcast, we hear from First Priority partners, Jack Johnston and Kim, who opened the luncheon. Jack discussed the moral decline in the United States, and how First Priority works in the younger generation to bring structure and values to their life. Kim told the audience that the growth has been incredible, and as a parent, she believes that the youth need hope. Brad spoke at the luncheon and shared the mission and what First Priority is. Natalie Kenney, Area Director and Administrator of First Priority of Permian Basin, spoke at our fall conference this past october. She shares the theme of shepherding and what it looks like to shepherd volunteers. Shepherding is showing up. JD Simpson, Executive Director of First priority of South Mississippi, joins Steve on this week’s podcast. He discusses his experience with launching clubs in his community, growing from four to about fifty clubs since the start. He encourages students to continue to use the tools God has given them to encourage others and so that God can use them. Brad Schelling and Steve Cherrico talk about the “why’s” for First Priority. Listen to the Three E’s and their explanation for them. The Three E’s are Encourage, Equip and Empower. It is about you and the gifts you are able to bring to First Priority.
Encouragement is something that we give and receive. Steve explains it as a cup that leaks, and we need others to keep filling us up to keep encouraging.
We want to Equip and share who we are around the country.
Empowerment is activated by what we have been encouraged and equipped with. There are three levels, Staff, Volunteers and Student Leaders. Empowerment will work its way down to the students.

On this week’s podcast, Brad Schelling and Steve Cherrico reflected over the words that Shane and Natalie Kenney spoke in San Antonio, Texas. Shane knows First Priority works, and that it reaches people to meet Jesus. He believed in it so much that he sold his roofing company and moved his family to Odessa, Texas. Shane saw the opportunity to influence teenagers, something he wished that he had done. He was ready to work for the kingdom, and not for himself. Now, they have about 42 schools in nine regions.
Natalie goes on to tell her why for First Priority. At 17, her best friend passed away and she realized she did not know how to share her faith. She knew at 17 that she was going to start sharing Jesus with those who sat next to her or interacted with her. She is ready to help equip students to share Jesus, something she wished she should have done.
Shane Kenney is the Executive Director of First Priority of Permian Basin. Shane has been working with students since 1998. He has served as a youth pastor in Florida for many years as well as coaching at the local school. It was during that time that he got a burden for campus ministry. In February of 2011 he joined First Priority in West Florida. In July of 2013 he moved his family to West Texas to become the Executive Director in the Permian Basin. Shane lives in Odessa, TX with his wife, Natalie, and oldest daughter Tori.

Vanessa tells her story of receiving a shoebox at 10-years-old, and how it gave her assurance in Jesus. Venessa goes on to tell of her story and how she followed the Lord’s voice. Vanessa Mejia-Hutchison was a recipient of an Operation Christmas Child shoebox when she was 10-years-old in Honduras. She grew up with her family of six in Honduras, where her parents struggled with money. She wasn’t able to go to school everyday because they could not afford tuition. Because of her trust in Jesus, she was able to go to the University of Oregon and received a Master’s of Curriculum and Instruction. Now, Vanessa is married with a 16-month-old in Oregon. Heather Bundy lives in Roanoke, TX. Heather was raised in a multi-denominational household. She knew she believed in God throughout school, and in college she truly fell in love with the Lord. Heather was originally a head administrator of a school, but her passions are working with churches and kids so they know the Lord. She is excited to build relationships and see the clubs grow.

In this week’s podcast, hear from Tampa Bay’s president, Amber Johansen. Amber is passionate and driven for the ministry of First Priority, and we get the opportunity to hear some incredible stories and encouragement from her.
Amber was born and raised in Tampa. After graduating from Leto High School, she attended Florida State University for an undergraduate degree and then the University of South Florida for a graduate degree in Government and International Studies. Her background includes working with at-risk teens and families, non-profit work, and program development.
She has been involved with First Priority of Tampa Bay since 2009, when she began serving as a Parent Partner in her son’s First Priority group. In 2013, she was appointed Executive Director and then President in 2023.

On this week’s podcast, Shane and Natalie Kenney share their heart with First Priority and how God is moving in west Texas. Shane and Natalie talked about how they started in Texas and the ways that God has answered prayers and worked in First Priority Permian Basin during their 10 years there. Shane Kenney has been working with students since 1998. He has served as a youth pastor in Florida for many years, as well as coaching at the local school. It was during that time that he got a burden for campus ministry. In February of 2011 he joined First Priority in West Florida. In July of 2013, he moved his family to West Texas to become the Executive Director in the Permian Basin. Natalie has served alongside her husband Shane in youth ministry for the past 20+ years. She has a burden to reach lost people with the Gospel and uses that passion to train students to be missionaries on their campus. Shane and Natalie live in Odessa, TX with their oldest daughter Tori. Their youngest daughter Tristan, currently lives in Anchorage, AK.

Tim Bargo is in his 15th year as executive director for First Priority Tri-County, KY. He spends most of his day working with schools, churches, finding priority partners, and promoting First Priority locally. He has been in youth ministry for 25 years and as a youth pastor/campus coach for 11 years. He also served 1 year as club director for FP Tri-States. Tim resides in Corbin Kentucky with his wife Tammy. They have three adult children Brittany, Justin, and Dylan. Tim and Tammy are actively involved at Immanuel Church in Corbin.

Al Miller and Theresa Cox are both a part of First Priority in Alabama. They started serving on staff during this past school year but have been a part of First Priority Decatur for several years. Theresa, the Area Director for Cullman Alabama, has previously volunteered for First Priority for almost 10 years before she came on staff. Al, the Area Director for elementary schools in Decatur Alabama, has been a donor for First Priority since the early 2000’s.

Ben serves as the Director of Student Ministry for Lifeway Christian Resources and has served the local church as a student pastor for fourteen years. In addition to his role at Lifeway, Ben is involved in training, consulting, and speaking to student ministries throughout the U.S. He is driven by a desire for student ministries to expand God’s Kingdom, to see the lives of students transformed by the gospel, and to produce students who shape the culture in which they live.

Preston Styons is the 2nd First Priority scholarship recipient and is from North Carolina. Preston has served in leadership roles with his local First Priority club since the 6th grade and will be continuing his education at a Christian university and hopes to continue to lead for the Lord.

This week, the TN1 Metro Nashville Coordinator Joey Maldonado, brings his background of church planting and youth ministry to talk about how to stay relationship-minded and serve the schools as First Priority.
Joey Maldonado is the TN1 Metro Nashville Coordinator and has served in youth ministry with his wife for 18 years. Joey moved to Nashville from The Bronx, New York 7 years ago and has also spent a few years in Latin America doing youth ministry as well. Joey has focused on using performing arts as a main tool in his youth ministry to connect to young adults and build relationships. His current position with First Priority as Metro Nashville Coordinator allows him to assist the coaches and schools by nurturing relationships and strengthening existing clubs.

Mark serves as the President of First Priority. He spends most of his day managing the organizational side of the ministry, including fundraising and board development. He was the initiator and director of First Priority Tri-States, the 2nd oldest FP chapter. Mark and his wife Michelle manage their own small business, therefore, Mark brings years of experience in business management to First Priority of America. Mark resides in eastern Kentucky with his wife, Michelle. Mark and Michelle have three children, Nathaniel & Mikaela (Robbins) Gray, Morgan, and Micah. They also have two grandchildren, Sadie B. and Beckham.

Nikki Hoffpauir, a native Floridian graduated with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences with a focus in public service from Florida State University in 2001 (Go Noles!). She then went on to serve a year with the AmeriCorps program, City Year, where she taught in Washington D.C.’s inner city before getting her Masters of Public Administration from George Washington University in 2004. Del Wright is the Executive Vice President of Expansion. His responsibilities include coaching and expanding the District Advisory Boards and FP Regional Managers, financial development and launching FPoA in new U.S. markets. Del graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from the University of Central Florida, where he also played football. Shannon Zabroski was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. He spent his early 20's in law enforcement, and at the age of 24, he felt the lord calling him into full time ministry. Shannon received his bachelors in Bible and Youth ministry from Evangel University and his M.Div. from the A/G Technological Seminary. Over the last 25 years, he's worn several hats, ranging from youth pastor and outreach pastor, family pastor, church planter, and lead pastor of one of the largest churches in the Kansas city area. Shannons heart is to partner with the local church to empower pastors and leaders to be missional in all they do. Shannon lives in Lee's Summit MO with his three children Trinity (17), Corban (16) and Shiloh (12), and spends whatever free time he has cycling and searching for the perfect donut.

Larry Franks, Director of Training at First Priority of America, talks about planning and preparing a vision casting event but he also challenges us to know our mission and what we are called to.
After 25 years of serving on staff in the local church, Larry Franks became the Executive Director of First Priority of Greater Decatur in November 2014. He is adding to his role in Decatur as a part-time Director of Training for First Priority of America where he will be overseeing and coaching Aaron and Victor in their roles in the TN-1 District. His heart’s passion is to see students come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, and for them to realize that there is HOPE. Larry has enjoyed watching God grow First Priority in Morgan, Lawrence, and Cullman Counties from its beginning in 2009 on 18 campuses to currently being on 56 campuses. There have been over 5,000 students say YES to the HOPE of Christ on the public school campus over the last 12 years. Larry was awarded the Lynn C Fowler Non-Profit Professional of the Year by the Decatur-Morgan Chamber of Commerce. First Priority of Greater Decatur was also awarded the Non-Profit of the Year by the Decatur City School System. Clothe Our Kids, a ministry of First Priority Greater Decatur received the Non-Profit of the Year by the Decatur City School System in 2019. Larry is married to Jessica (34 years) and has two daughters, Chelsea (28) and Hannah (22). Larry and Jessica are expecting their first grandchild in February 2022. He enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, and is an avid Georgia Bulldog fan.

Decatur board member, Larry Waye, shares a challenging message during a recent FP training.
Larry Waye was saved as a child, surrendered to the call of God to vocational ministry in 1970, was licensed to preach in 1972, and ordained in 1976. He has ministered in churches in Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio, Illinois, and New York, before moving to Alabama.
Larry and Cheryl Waye joined the Decatur Baptist Church pastoral staff in 2005, relocating from Rochester, NY where Larry had ministered for 22 years at the First Bible Baptist Church.
At Decatur Baptist, Larry served as Pastor of Adult Ministries for 5 1/2 years before leaving the staff under the Lord’s leadership to minister to the community at large through the Decatur Morgan Count Entrepreneurial Center, a non-profit economic development organization that he helped start.
In the fall of 2019, he returned to the staff of Decatur Baptist Church and currently oversees the Edify and Equip Ministries.

Shane and Natalie Kenney have worked in youth ministry for almost 25 years. They serve as the Executive Director and Area Director for First Priority Permian Basin. They began working in youth ministry in Florida, and then felt a burden for campus ministry. Mark Roberts introduced them to First Priority and soon after, they started working for FP in the state of Florida. After doing that for a year, they felt God calling them to move to Odessa, TX to start First Priority there.
They have been serving in FP Permian Basin for the past 8 years and have seen so many students come to know and have a relationship with Christ. Shane and Natalie live in Odessa, TX and have two daughters, Tori and Tristan.
Haley Wherry has been the Director of First Priority Blue Ridge for 11 years. He has been involved in youth ministry in some capacity for about 27 years. Haley worked for a ministry for 10 years where he was a campus ministry coordinator and it was similar to the First Priority strategy. He then started First Priority Blue Ridge where he continued to spend his time ministering to youth in schools.

Dr. JD Simpson Jr. serves as the Executive Director of FP South Mississippi. He grew up in Louisiana and felt a call to ministry while in college at LSU. But God had other plans, and in 1999 he launched First Priority of South Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS.

Debi DeBoer has been involved with First Priority since 1995. She had planned on going to med school to become a doctor, but God had other plans for her. She began full-time ministry in 1995 as a minister of music at her local church. Teenagers kept coming to her piano bench to talk and seek encouragement, and at the time she didn't see the big picture. She later realized that God was calling her into full-time student ministry. Debi has served in many areas of her church as well as being the Ministry and Area Director for FP Birmingham.
Debi lives in Birmingham, AL with her husband who she has been married to for 26 years and together they have three children who are all in college.
Hannah McKinney is 19 years old and is the Intern of Donor Development at FP Front Range. Hannah, as a 16 and 17 year old, raised money so that she could do mission work in Haiti, and found a love of fundraising at that time. She spends her time calling potential donors, in person donor meetings, as well as working on social media campaigns. On the side, she works for Uber Eats and Grubhub.

Ben Trueblood serves as the Director of Student Ministry for LifeWay Christian Resources and has seventeen years of student ministry experience, fourteen of which were spent in the local church as a student pastor. During his tenure, the Bank has grown from 7 offices to 27 and the Bank’s assets have increased dramatically from $150 million to $1.3 billion. In addition to his duties at Commercial Bank, Adam is a small business owner and developer.

Greg Stier is the founder and president of Dare 2 Share ministries. Greg has a reputation for knowing and relating to today’s teens in unique and effective ways. Because of his 25+ years in youth ministry, Greg is widely viewed as an authority on teen issues and adolescent spirituality. Raised in a violent, inner-city family of body-builders, he never had a dad and never felt like he measured up because his biceps weren’t big enough! Amber was born and raised in Tampa. After graduating from Leto High School, she attended Florida State University for an undergraduate degree and then the University of South Florida for a graduate degree in Government and International Studies. She is currently completing a graduate certificate in instructional design through Florida State University. Her background includes working with at-risk teens and families, and program development.
Amber has been involved with FPTB since 2009, when she began serving as a parent partner. In 2012, she consulted with FPTB as a Community Development Director, and in 2013 stepped into the position of Executive Director.
Amber’s primary focus as Executive Director is: vision casting, fundraising, program development, and ministry operations. Amber is available to speak on a wide range of topics including: the role of First Priority in the community, parenting, public education and faith based issues.
Brent Crowe is a thought-provoking visionary and communicator who has a passion to present the life changing message of the gospel. Brent uses humor and real-life situations to relate to people at the heart of their struggles.
He is currently serving as Vice President with Student Leadership University in Orlando, Florida. Brent is married to Christina, and has three children, Gabe, Charis and Mercy. He holds a Doctorate in Philosophy and two masters degrees, a Masters of Divinity in Evangelism and a Masters of Arts in Ethics, from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Kim and her husband, Scott, have four children and have made Brandon their home for nearly 20 years. Sharing their blessings with others and spreading the love of Jesus Christ is foundational to their family. Their oldest son introduced them to First Priority over 6 years ago and they have been actively involved in the program ever since. Kim currently serves as President of First Priority of the Great Plains and City Director for Brandon. Her passion is to educate and work together with the community to reach our kids for Christ. It was during that time that he got a burden for campus ministry. In February of 2011 he joined First Priority in West Florida. Carina Deshotels is the Pinellas County Director for First Priority of Tampa Bay. She is passionate about others knowing God's love, joy, and purpose that comes through growing strong in His word. She and her husband, Beau, have two beautiful children: Landon (14 years old) and McKenzie (11 years old). She loves encouraging students, good conversations, spontaneous adventures, and flowers of all kinds.
Jeff Stanford started working for First Priority 10 years ago in South Florida. He just recently packed up and moved his family to Springfield, MO to launch First Priority in that area. Chris Lane is the Executive Director and Founder of First Priority South Florida. He started FP in Ft. Lauderdale in 1998 and built it from the ground up. FP South Florida now has over 200 clubs in schools and is going strong.

Jeff currently serves on the Student Leadership University Team as the Executive Director of the LIFT Tour and Youth Pastor Summit. Jeff is nationally known as an urban ministry pioneer, communicator, innovator, and mentor. For 23 years, Jeff has served as Pastor of Youth Development at Peace Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia, where he oversaw all of the children, student, and young adult programming and then he transitioned to the role of Executive Pastor. Jeff is also the Founder of FrontLine Urban Resources, Inc., which is an organization that provides resources and trainings to help leaders engage an evolving generation of families as well as teaching them how to redefine and reshape their traditional views of urban ministry and urban culture.
Jeff received his undergraduate education from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia and his Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Indiana Wesleyan Seminary in Marion, Indiana. Jeff is currently working on his PhD in Organizational Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Michelle Horton is a biblical counselor in Tampa, FL. Michelle has been on-staff with Heart Song for over 8 years. Prior to moving to the Tampa Bay area, she served as a counselor for Heart Song in Washington, D.C. She received her B.A. in Speech and Communication Studies at Clemson University and her M. Div in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Prior to becoming a biblical counselor, Michelle pursued a career in television news for six years.
Wilson is a native Floridian. He grew up in the Tampa Bay area and has spent the majority of his life in Central Florida.Wilson has spent the last decade working as a youth director serving various churches. In 2017, Wilson began working for First Priority Tampa Bay as an Area Director. While Wilson served as an Area Director, he successfully presented First Priority to numerous Youth Directors in East Hillsborough and helped launch groups on school campuses in East Hillsborough.
Wilson is passionate about equipping and training students to know their legal right to share the gospel with their peers through First Priority chapters and groups.
Wilson is married to his best friend Jenna; together, they have three children, Isaac, Ezra, and Hollis. The Clarks love the outdoors, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Disney World.
Bryson Breakey is the Youth Pastor at Bethel World Outreach Church—an Every Nation church in Brentwood, TN—and is a songwriter in the Every Nation Music community. Growing up in the Seattle area, he now lives in Nashville with his beautiful wife Rachel. He loves good music, good friends and vinyl records.
After 25 years of serving on staff in the local church, Larry Franks became the Executive Director of First Priority of Greater Decatur in November 2014. He served as the City Director for Greater Decatur for a number of years before coming on board as the Executive Director. His heart’s passion is to see students come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, and for them to realize that there is HOPE. Larry has enjoyed watching God grow First Priority in Morgan and Lawrence counties from its beginning in 2009 on 18 campuses to currently being on 54 campuses. There have been over 4,800 students say YES to the HOPE of Christ on the public school campus over the last 9 years. Larry was recently awarded the Lynn C Fowler Non-Profit Professional of the Year by the Decatur-Morgan Chamber of Commerce. First Priority of Greater Decatur was also awarded the Non-Profit of the Year by the Decatur City School System. Clothe Our Kids received the Non-Profit of the Year by the Decatur City School System in 2019. Larry is married to Jessica (33 years) and has two daughters, Chelsea (27) and Hannah (21). He enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, and is an avid Georgia Bulldog fan.
Greg is a lifetime Birmingham area resident and ministry leader. He has been on staff with First Priority since 1996 after volunteering with the ministry for several years. He has led First Priority movements both locally and nationally. Greg first served as a campus guide, and area director before serving as Executive Director and continues today as President overseeing fiduciary and ministry operations. He hosted Priority Talk, a daily Christian based radio show from 2010-2018, and has written for Birmingham Christian Family Magazine and frequently represents First Priority in the community in the media.
Greg received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in secondary education and a Master’s of Divinity from New Orleans Theological Seminary. Greg has been a popular speaker for many churches, camps and conferences for nearly three decades; in fact chances are that Greg has been to your church or campus!

Dave Gibson has over 40 years of local, national, and international ministry leadership experience. He currently serves as Executive Director of Go2020 USA and Go2020 Global Leadership Team. Dave is the Senior Director of Missions & Evangelism at Grace Church of Eden Prairie, MN for over 30 years. Dave has also served as the Executive VP of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Executive Director of Mission America, and began in occupational ministry with Midwest Challenge.

Hayden has been around the world of ministry his whole life with an itinerant speaker and church leader for a father. Hayden felt a divine appointment to ministry his senior year of High School and has been involved on staff for multiple churches and ministries ever since.
