My sister Beverly was the most amazing fundraiser I have ever known. Her creativity was beyond her time. When I did an interview promoting a concert to raise money for a civic auditorium in Dickinson, ND, it caught Beverly off guard and she had an epiphany as to what my career would one day be. If you really want to catch someone off guard, upon greeting them, 9 times out of 10 they will ask “How ya doin’?” Respond with “it’s the best day of my life.” Responses to that will vary but you will inevitably stop them in their tracks and the number one response to that is “what, did you win the lottery or something?” I use that phrase quite often. I have many people whom I looked up to and admired over the years. My mom, my wife, rodeo athletes and many others all have and continue influencing me in positive ways. Being a broadcaster for over half my life, I will tell you about two who influenced me greatly. One I met, one I did not....David Letterman and Jim Thompson. The longest I have ever worked for one radio station was 2 months shy of 5 years. I started at KTWB on August 26, 1991, my last day there was June 14, 1996.I would relocate to The Black Hills of SD as I'd go to work for K-Sky. That is where I would acquire the moniker "Wild" Bill! in the Fall of 1990, I had the privilege of doing shows on four separate radio stations in a four day span. They were KKRC, KKFN, KWSN and KRRO. I tell that story today! As the year 2019 along with the decade coming to a close soon, it seems our community has been inundated with death. For me, it’s been neighbors, school mates, former sweethearts, co-workers, radio idols and others have passed on. Rather than comment on death and dying, I’ve decided to end the decade not necessarily so much on a positive note but a light-hearted one. We all could use a little cheering up.
