We have been providing our audience with a bit of a treat in the form of interviews that Sun Devil Source publisher Chris Karpman conducted with Arizona State assistant coaches.
The ninth and final episode of this series is from Karpman's recent conversation with ASU associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce. The former NFL linebacker is entering his first season as co-defensive coordinator and third on head coach Herm Edwards’ staff. He and co-coordinator Marvin Lewis will take over the ASU defense after New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales led Herm Edwards’ defense the past two seasons.
During his nine-year NFL career, Pierce played 137 regular season games (and seven playoff games) with the Washington Redskins (2001-04) and New York Giants (2005-09). Pierce captained the Giants' defense for five seasons, including 2007 when he helped anchor the championship team that upset the previously undefeated New England Patriots for a victory in Super Bowl XLII.
A native of Long Beach, Calif., Pierce played college football at the University of Arizona after beginning his college career at Mt. San Antonio Junior College in Walnut, California. He worked alongside Edwards as an NFL analyst at ESPN for much of the last decade.
He was the head coach of Long Beach Poly High School from 2014-2017, leaving the team to join Edwards at ASU as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator.
In this podcast, Pierce describes his expanding role on ASU’s coaching staff and assesses the team's personnel on the defense. He also talks extensively about recruiting.

Hill joined Boise State after leaving Hawaii, where he was named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in December 2015. Prior to that, Hill served as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Washington for seven seasons from 2009 to 2015. Hill was a record-breaking quarterback at Central Washington from 1999 to 2003. He broke more than 20 league records and passed for 8,882 career yards and 76 touchdowns while completing 60.2 percent of his passes.
In this podcast, Hill explains the offensive philosophy that he brings to Tempe and gives his perspective on the personnel he will be working with in his first season, including some details on Daniels and the challenges ahead for the team’s skill players, particularly its wide receivers.

He was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals for 16 seasons, the longest tenure of any head coach in franchise history, and holds the franchise record for career wins (131), playoff appearances (seven) and division titles (four).
Lewis and co-defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce will take over a defense that was led by current New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales over the two seasons.

The sixth episode of this series is from Karpman's recent conversation with ASU first-year defensive backs coach Chris Hawkins, who is believed to be ASU’s youngest-ever position coach in the modern era.
Hawkins was just 24 when hired by Sun Devil head coach Herm Edwards in late December. He previously worked as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, USC, where he worked with defensive backs after playing in the secondary for the Trojans from 2014-17.
While at USC, Hawkins played his first season at cornerback before moving to safety for the next three seasons. He totaled 234 tackles, four interceptions and six passes defended in 36 career starts for the Trojans.
Following last season, ASU lost three-year starting cornerback Kobe Williams, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Even so, the Sun Devils do return a veteran group to their secondary, led by senior cornerbacks Chase Lucas and Jack Jones, senior safety Evan Fields and junior safety Aashari Crosswell.

Hagan is entering his second season under Herm Edwards, and first as a full-time position coach. He was hired to Edwards’ staff in April of 2018 as an offensive analyst. He played wide receiver for the Sun Devils from 2002-05, when he appeared in 50 games across four seasons and finished his career as one of the most successful receivers in school and conference history.
Following last season, ASU lost its starting tight end Tommy Hudson to graduation and saw reserve Jared Bubak announce his transfer to walk-on at Nebraska, where he grew up.
Sophomore tight end Nolan Matthews played quite a bit last year and appears to be in line to lead the position group. Matthews and senior wide receiver convert Curtis Hodges are the only two returning scholarship tight ends on the roster and will be joined by high school signees Jake Ray and Ryan Morgan before the start of this season.
The former ASU standout also gave perspective on why he decided to get involved with coaching.

Christensen, who has over 35 years of college coaching experience, also analyzes why he thinks it was so important for the Sun Devils to land two graduate transfers, former Texas A&M tackle Kellen Diesch and former Stanford guard Henry Hattis. Each has one season of immediate eligibility.
ASU started two then-true freshmen on the offensive line last year (Dohnovan West and LaDarius Henderson). How well did they play given their circumstances and why should they have never been put in that situation? Christensen had a lot of thoughts on that as well.

In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris, Mason Kern, and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's 38-35 win over USC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum last Saturday.
ASU's (4-4, 2-3 Pac-12) win in Southern California was not only its first road victory of 2018 but also snapped USC (4-4, 3-3 Pac-12) coach Clay Helton’s career undefeated home record of 19-0. In evaluating the Sun Devils' win over their Pac-12 South foe, we begin the show by discussing some of the most critical plays that led to the outcome: ASU junior receiver N'Keal Harry's 44-yard touchdown catch, sophomore running back Eno Benjamin's 49-yard touchdown run to give his team a 24-7 lead, Harry's third-quarter 92-yard punt return touchdown that put the Sun Devils back in front for good, and more.
How effective was ASU's offense after the team got back to the ground-and-pound style coach Herm Edwards has said he's most comfortable with? Benjamin gained 192 yards on the ground over 29 carries to go along with two touchdowns.
Sun Devils' senior quarterback Manny Wilkins bounced back against USC after receiving harsh criticism following ASU's loss to Stanford two weeks ago when he failed to lead a successful two-minute drive. Wilkins completed 14-of-22 passes for 166 yards, one passing touchdown, one rushing touchdown, and one fumble lost. While Wilkins statistics don't jump out, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback also rushed nine times for 89 yards, including ASU's final touchdown of the day, a 45-yard touchdown run with just 1:23 remaining in the game.
In the City of Angels, Harry, the Sun Devils' best-regarded NFL prospect, hauled in four passes for 95 yards including a jaw-dropping 28-yard one-handed catch in the fourth quarter and the 92-yard punt return touchdown. Was this game potentially Harry's most complete game in his ASU career?
In the first half of ASU's win over USC, the team's defense, led by coordinator Danny Gonzales, surrendered just seven points (USC sophomore wide receiver Tyler Vaughns had an 82-yard punt return touchdown on USC's first touch of the day). However, in the first five minutes of the second half, ASU's defense yielded 14 points, as USC jumped ahead of the Sun Devils. While Gonzales' unit held USC to just seven points in the fourth quarter, including a critical fourth-and-1 stop with 10:16 remaining in the game while USC made its way down to the ASU 20-yard line. How did the defense perform in totality?
Early in the game, Gonzales' defense was able to generate pressure on redshirt freshman quarterback Jack Sears who was making his first career start in place of freshman JT Daniels (concussion), but ASU was only able to produce two sacks. The unit did record five tackles for loss for a combined 32 yards. What was the impact of these negative plays?
With ASU's win over USC, the Sun Devils are once again in the mix for the Pac-12 South title. What must the Sun Devils' do the rest of the way to put themselves in position to take the division? What does a win against a powerhouse program like USC at the Coliseum do for ASU's program?
They review how the Pac-12 did in Week 9 and how the conference has done this season before making a quick note the addition of four-star wide receiver prospect, according to 247 Composite Rankings, Chad Johnson Jr.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris, Mason Kern, and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's 20-13 loss against Stanford.
In evaluating the Sun Devils' (3-4, 1-3 Pac-12) fourth loss in their past five games, they begin the show by revisiting ASU's failed final drive of the game that began with 2:20 remaining in the game and ended with senior quarterback Manny Wilkins throwing a pass in the flat to sophomore running back Eno Benjamin with eight seconds left who was tackled in bounds. ASU couldn't get off a play after that as time expired. What happened on that drive that prevented Wilkins and the offense from taking a couple shots at a potential game-tying touchdown?
Wilkins completed 26-of-43 passes for 353 yards, one rushing touchdown, one interception, and one fumble lost. The senior signal-caller didn't connect on some crucial plays, and couldn't lead the team into the end zone on its final drive. How did the crew evaluate Wilkins' performance in the losing effort?
This was a game of missed opportunities for ASU as the Sun Devils turned the ball over three times, each time coming in Stanford territory. How much did these mistakes cost ASU?
The Sun Devils got away from the ground-and-pound run game that head coach Herm Edwards has repeatedly said he wants to utilize as sophomore running back Eno Benjamin rushed only 11 times for 38 yards. Benjamin did catch five passes for 43 yards, but didn't have a carry after 6:59 in the third quarter. Why did ASU largely abandon the run game and why wasn't it more effective?
The Danny Gonzales-led defense generated just one sack but did produce 12 tackles for loss and the unit only allowed 20 points. How well did the defense perform against Stanford?
While the defense was able to stifle Stanford's run game allowing just 127 rush yards on 43 carries (3 yards per carry), critical penalties plagued the Sun Devils. ASU had seven total penalties for 76 yards, with each occurring on defense. How did these mistakes affect ASU's ability to keep the Cardinal off the board?
They review how the Pac-12 did in Week 8 and how the conference has done this season before concluding the podcast with perspective on where the ASU program lies after seven games in the Herm Edwards' era.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Premium Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris, Max Madden, and Mason Kern as they preview Arizona State's Week 8 matchup against David Shaw's Stanford Cardinal. The game is set for Thursday, Oct. 18 with a 6 p.m. kickoff at Sun Devil Stadium and will be televised on ESPN.
In this podcast we start by providing some context to ASU landing four-star cornerback prospect Jordan Clark.
After starting the season 4-0, the Cardinal is coming off of consecutive loses against No. 5 Notre Dame on the road and Utah at home, both by double-digits. Why has Stanford looked lackluster in previous weeks?
We analyze a Cardinal offense that is headlined by one of the better running backs in nation in senior Bryce Love as well as standout senior wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside and discuss their roles in Stanford's offense that is scoring just over 25 points per game. While the running game has struggled for the majority of Stanford's season (averaging just 85 rush years per game), how will ASU be able to stop Stanford's ground-and-pound attack?
Junior quarterback KJ Costello is in his first full year as David Shaw's starting quarterback and has excelled in 2018. The former highly-touted prospect is currently fourth in the conference in passing yards (1,611), quarterback rating (152.2) and third in yards per attempt (8.9). How will the Sun Devils be able to make Costello uncomfortable?
Shaw's offenses have largely operated out of power formations, bringing extra offensive linemen and multiple tight ends into sets to run the ball down opponents throats. What tight ends have been critical in Stanford's offense so far in 2018?
Stanford's defense is led by fifth-year defensive coordinator Lance Anderson and uses a 3-4 scheme. This season, the Cardinal returns six defensive starters from 2017.
After the defense took a step back last year for Stanford, that unit has continued to struggle in 2018 allowing over 400 yards per game but has only allowed a modest 22 points per game. Why has the defense has issues for much of the season?
Stanford’s secondary has been banged up for much of this season, and Stanford ranks just 85th in the country in pass defense and is allowing opponents to complete over 62 percent of passes. What are some of the injuries that have caused Stanford’s secondary to be more thin?
After we each provide our keys to the game, we make our picks for each Pac-12 game taking place in Week 8 and conclude with our score predictions for ASU's test against Stanford.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's 28-21 loss at Pac-12 South foe Colorado, which was then-ranked No. 21.
In evaluating the Sun Devils' (3-3, 1-2 Pac-12) first Pac-12 South loss of the season, they begin the show by revisiting ASU's critical fourth-and-goal play at the 3-yard-line early in the fourth quarter with ASU trailing the Buffaloes 28-21. The Sun Devils ran a fade to sophomore wideout Curtis Hodges, who couldn't haul in the touchdown. Was it the right play call there? How did the sequence of plays leading up to it impact what was called and ran?
ASU and sophomore tailback Eno Benjamin seemed to have the running game working in full effect in the first half as Benjamin had 20 carries for 96 and two touchdowns. How did the offensive line and the play calling enable this? In the second half, Benjamin had eight times for just 24 yards. What changed for the Sun Devils' rushing attack and how did this contribute to ASU scoring just seven points while holding the ball for just over ten minutes in the second half?
Senior quarterback Manny Wilkins was only sacked twice but both were very meaningful plays, one in the red zone with ASU trying to tie the game down 28-21 and another on ASU's last offensive drive of the game. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior from Novato, California, completed 12-of-22 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown against the Buffaloes, with long completions of 72, 40, and 30 yards on the day. How did Wilkins perform overall at Folsom Field?
Colorado's sophomore wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. had quite the game with all four of the Buffaloes' touchdowns, including 13 receptions for 127 yards to go along with five carries for 13 yards. Shenault had two touchdowns as a receiver and two out of direct snaps in a Wildcat formation, and now leads the Pac-12 with 10 touchdowns on the season. Conversely, junior wide receiver N'Keal Harry, who suffered an apparent right leg injury in the third quarter on a punt return, hauled in three receptions for 63 yards and had one rush for two yards. How did the usages of both standout players differ? How much was Harry involved in ASU's game plan?
The Sun Devils' defense didn't generate a sack and only forced five TFL's for a combined six yards in the losing effort. Junior quarterback Steven Montez had a nice game leading Colorado to victory, completing 23-of-33 passes for 328 yards and two touchdowns. Why couldn't ASU's defensive line get to Montez?
The crew provide analysis on how Colorado's offensive line was more physical at the point of attack than ASU's front six. How did the Sun Devils' secondary fair against Montez, specifically sophomore cornerbacks Chase Lucas and Kobe Williams?
Karpman further breaks down the situation involving senior linebacker Koron Crump who has decided to leave the ASU program, with hopes of regaining his explosiveness that he lost with his torn ACL. Crump is now working toward getting fully ready to take part in ASU's Pro Day.
They review how the Pac-12 did in Week 6 to conclude this edition of the podcast.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporter Jack Harris as they analyze Arizona State's 52-24 victory over the Oregon State Beavers.
In analyzing the Sun Devils' (3-2, 1-1 Pac-12) first Pac-12 victory of 2018, and the first under head coach Herm Edwards, they begin the show by reviewing some of the game's most critical plays that allowed ASU to break it open against Oregon State (1-3, 0-2 Pac-12).
Sophomore running back Eno Benjamin set the program single-game rushing record with his 312 yards on Saturday to go along with four total touchdowns. Benjamin's 300-plus yard performance led to his earning of Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week. How did the overall blocking contribute to the sophomore's big night? What does 48 rushing attempts from ASU mean as the season progresses?
What can fans take away from senior quarterback Manny Wilkins' play against the Beavers? The 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior from Novato, California, went 14-for-25 for 162 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions while failing to connect on a couple deep passes.
The Sun Devils struggled mightily to contain Beavers' freshman running back Jermar Jefferson, who tallied 254 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. Why couldn't ASU limit the Oregon State running game and how concerning was it for the program moving forward?
ASU's defense was able to generate 11 tackles for loss including five sacks and forced three fumbles, while recovering one. How did Danny Gonzales' unit fair overall against an inferior Oregon State team?
The crew provide a review of how the Pac-12 did in Week 5, with updates on how their picks for conference games are going. Those picks are presented each week on the premium edition of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast which is published each Thursday.
They conclude with a short segment on ASU men's basketball, including the new commitment of Alonzo Verge, and what the starting lineup could look like when Bobby Hurley's team takes on Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 6, in the team's season-opener.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's 28-21 loss at San Diego State in the team's first road game of the season. They begin the show discussing the crucial fourth-and-1 play that the ASU offense could not convert before SDSU went on an 11-play, 85-yard drive that ended with a touchdown that tied the game at 14 just before half.
The crew provide a complete breakdown on ASU's offense, including an evaluation of the quarterback play from senior Manny Wilkins, sophomore wideout Frank Darby (who had a career night) and analysis on ASU's lack of a capable running game.
They then analyze how ASU's defense competed, including a breakdown of why the Aztecs were so successful running the ball, most notably through junior running back Juwan Washington who finished the game with 27 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown. They discuss the physicality that SDSU showed and Karpman explains his reasoning for why ASU couldn't match it.
They conclude with their perspectives on what the impact of the loss will be for a team whose schedule only gets tougher as the Sun Devils next game will come up north as they take on No. 10 Washington on Sept. 22.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's season-opening 16-13 victory over then-ranked No. 15 Michigan State. They begin the show discussing the key plays in ASU's third victory over a Top-15 team in Tempe this century.
The crew provides a complete breakdown on ASU's offense, including an evaluation of the quarterback play from senior Manny Wilkins, analysis on ASU's rushing attack and how the Sun Devils' offensive line faired against a potent Michigan State defensive line.
They then analyze how ASU's defense competed, including a breakdown of the Tillman and ranger positions. The crew speaks on the impact freshman linebacker Merlin Robertson (nine tackles, 1.5 sacks) as well as senior Tillman safety Jalen Harvey, who led the team in tackles with 10.
They conclude with their perspectives on what the impact of a win like this against a blue-collar program like Michigan State can do for ASU's team currently and program in the future.
