064: In this episode of Beyond the Culture, Dr. Walker speaks with the 1982 NCAA National Finalist Cheyney State College Lady Wolves .

On March 28th 1982 Cheyney State College (now Cheyney University) Lady Wolves basketball team coached by HOF coach C. Vivian Stringer, laced up their shoes to play the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech University.

It was an historic night. It was the first ever NCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Championship Game. It was the first and only time that a HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and University) competed in an NCAA Division One final four and championship game.

It was the first time an all-Black women’s team with all-Black coaching staff played for a Division 1 national title.

It's been 40 years since that momentous occasion. And 40 years later, herstory can never be erased.

On this episode of Beyond the Culture, I have the esteemed honor. To have a conversation with several members of that 1982 team. The members of the team who are here tonight are:

Deb Walker, Yolanda Laney, Ann Strong, Valerie Walker, Sharon Taylor, Faith Wilds, and Karen Draughn.

I want you to stay with me for this inspiring and legendary conversation.

Don’t go anywhere as I go Beyond the culture with the 1982 Cheney State College Lady Wolves.

016: Dr. Frederick Engram provides an informative and eye-opening conversation on the subject of race.

Did you know that racism was created long ago in civilization? Critical Race Theory suggests that race was constructed as a social concept by white people to further their economic and political interests at the expense of Black people. This is why whiteness and blackness exist in the first place.

In this episode of Beyond the Culture, my guest is Dr. Frederick Engram. Dr. Fred is an assistant professor of instruction in the Department of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and the Center for African American Studies at the University of Texas at Arlington. He focuses his work on the lived experiences of African American graduate students enrolled at PWIs (predominantly white institutions).

Dr. Engram explains Critical Race Theory in detail and the importance of the civil rights movements like Black Lives Matter in pushing towards reparations and change. Listen in to learn why honesty is the only way to move forward, even in the current political scene.

Quotes:“Black people cannot in and of themselves be racist because race itself- whiteness and blackness- was socially constructed by white people.”- Dr. Engram [27:16]

“We have to start telling the truth. For too long we have lived in a whitewashed environment that created this image of something that is completely false on average.”- Dr. Engram [45:20]

What you will learn in this episode:· [3:17] Dr. Fredrick explains his view on the nomination of Kamala Harris as the first black woman on the national presidential ticket- she is qualified but...
· [5:46] Is Kamala Harris qualified as a Black woman or as a political leader?
· [7:45] The opposition and challenges Black women leaders face when vying for top political positions.
· [11:27] He describes how he got involved in helping Black students get into predominantly white institutions with the right kind of representation.
· [18:57] Critical Race Theory- how the issue of race existed to separate classes with lighter skin seen as superior.
· [21:45] When the term ‘white people’ was constructed and legalized. The difference between the ‘white society’ of then and now.
· [27:00] Why Black people cannot be racist since whiteness and blackness was constructed by white people to exalt authority.
· [30:15] The process of reparations that is needed to at least repair the damage of four hundred years of oppression.
· [35:03] The Black Lives Matter movement- the importance of civil rights movements to achieve justice.
· [38:00] The individual roles we can play in the Black Lives Matter movement when protesting against the killing of Black people.
· [40:19] The significance of the NBA and NFL’s contribution to the Black Lives Matter movement by supporting policy changes.

003: HR Specialist and Entertainment Industry Expert Ruth-Ann Wynter communicate how the message of the Gospel can be shared in the entertainment industry.

I had a conversation with HR specialist and entertainment industry expert Ruth-Ann Wynter. We talked about how she became involved with HR and the entertainment industry and that her main message was that the Gospel can be shared effectively in the entertainment industry. We then discussed her experiences as a woman of color in the entertainment industry and how she’s had to navigate conditions based on her race and gender. We discussed the importance of bridging Gospel music and entertainment. She draws from her experiences of working with Prince and Jay Z. The conversation with Ruth-Ann was phenomenal.

I want to unpack the conversation that we had. I wrote down three quotes or three parts of the discussion that Ruth-Ann shared. I thought it was phenomenal, and I want to share that with you if you didn't hear the interview, and even if you did, I'm sure you got something out of it.

“What good is the salt in the shaker”One quote Ruth-Ann made was, “what good is the salt in the shaker”? Ruth-Ann offered in this particular quote, which she often heard from her father, that to have an impact on the world, to have an effect on your community, or to have an effect on whatever it is that you do, you must get your talents out in the open and put them to use in the marketplace. What good is the salt in the shaker?, is similar to an often quoted verse in the Bible in Matthew 5:13. Salt loses its effectiveness if it stays in the shaker.

“Go fix the sink”Ruth-Ann shared another quote, "Go fix the sink." She tells the story of being assigned to work with the artist, Prince, in his early days. She was just promoted to a leadership position in her church, and because of her Christian background and her relationship with Jesus Christ, she was concerned about working with Prince. She has a meeting with her pastor and explains her concerns. He asked her, "If your sink breaks down and you need a plumber, and you call a plumber to come to your house to fix the sink when the plumber arrives at the door do you ask the plumber, “Are you a Christian or do you tell him to go fix the sink”? Fix the sink in this context meant, they're not going to ask you whether or not you are Christian. They just want you to go in there and get the job done.

“Nurture its creatives”The final quote Ruth-Ann made during our conversation is that the church must “nurture its creatives.” She urged that churches (religious organizations) have to take care and encourage the gifts, talents, and abilities that’s already in the House of God so that way the talents, the skill sets, and the creativity that’s in the House of God don’t feel the need to go outside and explore other opportunities. If the church would nurture its creatives, then you will find that all of the gifts, callings, and skill sets that are in the church in many ways will stay right there to help the church and build it into a better church.

002: Entrepreneur and Business Storytelling Coach Andy Henriquez shares the power of storytelling that changes lives, and empowers every audience to action.

In this episode, entrepreneur and business storytelling coach Andy Henriquez shared how storytelling is a potent tool that empowers every audience. We discussed his background and what motivated him to begin storytelling and how, from the very beginning, it separated him from the competition.

We then discussed his “signature story.” The story of how his mother, against all the odds, became the owner of a foreclosed building for sale without any money. We then discussed Andy’s storytelling program, and he gave away a gift to all the listeners. We ended the conversation with Andy encouraging others that their voice is needed in the world at this moment, and it was important that nothing holds them back.

Quote – And so what I find is that…that journey of getting to your next best version of you, that journey of going beyond your limitations, that journey of realizing your gifts, your skills and your talents and living out your purpose, as opposed to you being able to see the entire thing, you might have a vision of what you're looking to create. But as far as the journey itself, it's typically going to be revealed to you in phases in small chunks and mediocre steps. And if you could just take that next best step, then what happens is if you have enough faith to do so, the next step is going to reveal itself – Andy Henriquez
