SEO Rank It Up Podcast #115 “Tricks to Rank Up Over Your Competition”
In this episode of the SEO Rank It Up Podcast, the host Erica Glessing talks about some of the easiest ways to check your competition. These days, competition is everywhere and competitors need to be on their game to ensure they’re still in the game. Learn more about the ways in which you can keep tabs on your competition and be one step ahead of them by improving your web page or blog in terms of ranking and appearance on Google.
The purpose of this episode is to enable you to ditch the complexity and opt for better ways that can give you just as good results. One step is to place yourself in the shoes of your client and think from their perspective. Imagine how customers would use your business or services. Pretend (go incognito) and start searching for the services you provide on the internet.
Take a look at competing blog posts in your niche. Websites can be a little challenging in the sense that it’s a bit tricky to compete with the big aggregate companies if you’re just starting out. As a result, take a look at the first page of Google search and click on the more compelling blog posts after the "yelp" and other big company aggregate listings. Type in a term that you think anyone would type while looking for your services, and from there, click on the top 2 to 4 high-quality informational blog posts. This is a good way to look at your competition.
Then focus on different ways you can learn to outrank your competition. Clicking on the top blog post and insert it into WordCount.net, which is a free tool designed for measuring the words in an article or blog post. The first step is to find out how many words they have on one page. For instance, if a page has 400 words in it, then one way to begin to overtake the ranking of that page would be to double your word count.

SEO magic happens when you take a concept and generate a list of things you can shine light on. For example, I blogged about my favorite 25 SEO podcasts recently! How long should the list be? Listen in for strategies and tips on lists for SEO! Notice each list item garners two images with sexy alt-text.

The three major aspects of doing SEO consist of accumulating organic search results, quality of organic traffic, as well as the quantity of organic traffic. The search engine results page (SERP) is where the search engine shows the best and most relevant results when a user types something in the search box. For instance, ads play a big part in sustaining the SERPs. The search engine has its very own organic ranking algorithm which determines what kind of websites will show up in the results.
What is a List Blog?
First of all, what is a list blog? I came across the concept of a list blog on eBay. There was a time when I got on eBay to look for ways to sell a book. I learned on the platform that if you just put one book out there, chances are it might not perform that well. On the other hand, experts observed that sellers tended to do better if they put out a series of books on a similar subject matter.
A list blog works on the same principles. Your blog is more likely to rank higher in terms of organic search results in the form of a list blog. Having more list blogs can mean having more meta-data. For instance, a recording artist representative can have a list of the top recording artists and how they got their start. The beauty of a list blog lies in the fact that every item in the blog will consist of some form of meta-data.
For example, on my website SEO for Lead Gen, I have a blog on the best 25 SEO podcasts that can help you master search engine optimization for your business. I will generally save the logo as SEO for Lead Gen Best SEO Podcasts. By doing this, my meta-data becomes the picture of the logo and the title of the show. I might also include Best SEO Podcasts: and the name of the podcast in the photo caption, as well as making sure I change the alt text.
After that, I insert the description of the show which helps the audience understand the content better. And here is a little trick I use for writing list blogs – I took 25 screenshots of the content in action. Adding a second picture with the same or additional meta-data is a good way of repeating your main keywords. In the end, you’ll have about 50 to 75 pieces of meta-data for a 25 item list blog. My personal preference is to opt for a 25 item list blog, however, I’ve come across pages that can go up to 100 items as well. But 100 might seem a bit too over the top for some people. 10 is also a favorable number when it comes to list blogs that have a limited number of items available to be covered. You can also request an SEO demo from my company to help you rank higher with SEO.

How to get organic traffic for your blog is the focus of today's SEO Rank It Up Podcast.
First of all, a blog is alive. When you nourish it frequently it will perform better for you. Think about a dog you walk daily verses a dog you take on a walk once a month. Which dog will be more responsive? Blogs like TLC.
How to Blog for Business
With most businesses transporting their operations to a more digital space, take advantage of blogging to grow your business.
Businesses who have benefited a great deal with the help of SEO will attest to the fact that incorporating SEO is a fruitful way of boosting your growth.
Search Engine Optimization is a multidimensional tool that lets you use it to your benefit in more than one way. Businesses tend to use SEO to attract more organic traffic to their websites as a part of digital marketing.
SEO can be rewarding for businesses in the sense that it allows the website to reach a wider audience and promote the businesses’ digital features. Accumulating organic research is the primary reason behind businesses doing SEO as part of their digital campaign. With the help of SEO, business websites can boost their performance and help get them in Google’s top search rankings in that particular industry.
In the previous episode, we discussed how to do SEO with images known as image SEO more commonly. In this week’s episode, we’ll learn how to do blogging for business with the help of SEO. This episode covers an array of tips that will help you blog better for your business’s growth and reach.
The episode discusses tips and techniques that helped to improve the rankings of the blogs that were run and maintained by the host. The host was able to improve the blogs’ ranking with the help of incorporating certain keywords on a consistent basis.
Update Your Blog Posts Regularly
You need to realize that you have to keep nourishing your blog regularly to make sure it doesn’t fall behind in terms of searchability and ranking. It is no longer a set it and forget it world.
The episode covers some unique advice relevant for blogging for business. The first tip mentioned in the episode is to update your blog regularly. Blogs that are updated weekly tend to do pretty well on Google’s search rankings. However, weekly updates can seem a bit too much in the beginning but as you get used to updating your blog more regularly, you’ll get a hang of it in no time. One great way to improve your blog’s performance is to add images whenever updating your blog.
Your Blog Should Solve a Problem
The first question you can ask yourself as a blogger is “how can I solve a problem with my blog?” Having a ‘why’ at the back of your mind for your blog can be a good start to this journey. A compelling question will set the mood for the content that is to follow afterward. Keep your audience in mind when you’re composing your blog and think about what they might be trying to solve with the help of your blog. For instance, if someone has come to this podcast episode, chances are they're probably looking for ways to get attention for their blog posts or simply how to use blogging for SEO.
If your recent blogs haven’t been attracting organic traffic as of yet, you first need to look at the competition in that industry. After you do that, make sure you make them longer, stronger, and better, keeping in mind the latest trends in the market. Be inclusive of high-resolution images in your blogs. Also, your topic needs to be compelling and be able to tell a unique story to the readers.
When you’re blogging for SEO, your writing doesn’t have to be distinguished. When it comes to SEO, simple is generally given more preference over flowery composition. Always keep your audience in mind when blogging for business. Use a variety of elements to enrich your blogs such as high-resolution images and relevant keywords that are popular as far as trends in digital marketing in that field are considered.
The final advice the host gives in this episode is to not look for instant gratification when it comes to blogging. Blogging should be seen as a long-term contribution instead of a short-term one. Blog posts tend to rank up with time only if you’re putting in the effort to sustain it.

How images can contribute to your search engine optimization including:
-how to choose compelling images
-how to name your images
-how to boost ranking on google with your metadata
Images can be a powerful way of communicating your message with your target audience. In this episode, you learn how to SEO with images. Content that is lacking in visual media tends to perform not as well as content that is inclusive of visual media. You might think you only need Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to attract organic and free traffic to your website. What you may not know is that image SEO can give your content the extra boost it needs and enable your target audience to find it more efficiently.
Images are enticing, there’s no doubt about that. However, there is a technique you have to be wary of when it comes to choosing the right kind of image for your content. Visual media is becoming a significant aspect of digital marketing so the kind of images you choose for your content will determine how well it is going to do in terms of attracting organic traffic.
If you’re going to put content out there, make sure you attach visual media with all of it. Sometimes seeing words upon words can be a bit too much for the readers and can end up discouraging them from going any further. That is why you need to do your visual research before you add any images. The first piece of advice is to go for royalty-free images. These images can be licensed one time after which businesses and individuals can use the images infinitely without having to renew the license. Unsplash and Pixabay are some of the best sites to get your hands on for royalty-free images.
On the other hand, for topics that have more to do with businesses and services, it is recommended you choose images that will look photogenic and come off as unique. Vector and cartoon images will also work for this type of SEO. Another piece of advice for image SEO is opting for original images to give your content a hint of ingenuity. Make sure the pictures you take are high resolution and resonate with your content.
The image you pick needs to be original and enticing. In addition to this, your audience will spend greater time looking at your content if the visual media consists of faces. It was found out that generally, people spend a lot of time looking at eyes, and the younger the eyes, the more time the viewers spend on that page.
Ideally, you want to opt for images that are compelling and can tell a story to the audience. Aside from being compelling and high resolution, your pictures need to be compressed. That is because if the images are not the right resolution, they will slow down the time your webpage takes to load. Most people don’t wait around that long for a page too long and if they are a first-time visitor, it could increase their chances of not continuing.
Compressing your images is quite important but you cannot compromise on the quality in the process. It is up to you to decide how much resolution your image requires to look good but at the same time, it needs to be a size that would not hinder the loading time. TinyPNG is one website that lets you compress images. However, sometimes the app can make images look too small so you need to ensure the quality of the images is not affected.
Name your picture before you upload it to your website. Before naming your picture, make sure you have noted down the keywords for SEO you want to incorporate in your content.
Moreover, if you are putting out content on a very competitive subject matter, you need to have a lot of images and name them with SEO keywords. Research what the top keywords for SEO are in that particular industry. For instance, if you’re doing digital marketing for a vegan restaurant in Miami, you can name your image by adding the topic name, the name of your actual brand, and then include the name of the picture. You need to have a name for your image before you upload it. It is advised the name be comprised of three pieces. The opener can be an SEO keyword, the second word can be the brand name that needs to be repeated throughout the content, and the third word can be the description. The second piece can also alternate between brand name and topic as well.
When you upload the image, you might come across something called the alt text. The alt text is there for people who have slow computers or for people living with disabilities. Alt text can be a great way of doing SEO. It is a piece of meta-data that Google can see. Now, it is time for you to rename your image with the alt text. Make sure to name your image with keywords that people use to generally look you up. Know that every image contains around six pieces of meta-data and can be a great way of doing SEO. After that, you’ll only be left with the title and caption of the image. Take your time writing a caption that truly resonates with the message behind your brand.
