So today I am going to interview Mr. Jim Laird. For those of you who might not know him he is an amazing strength and conditioning coach. He was NCAA Division I coach for four years, he has worked with many professional athletes from the NFL the CFL the LPGA and major-league baseball. He also works with a lot of civilians. What I mean is the average dude who walks in off the street or lady, looking to get in shape and lose some body fat. He also podcasts on Kiefer's Body IO network.
He was an elite level power lifter and he pushed himself to the limit so he knows what it takes to succeed and also what it takes out of the body. He now trains clients with the philosophy of "Train smarter not harder". Jim has mastered the art of balancing performance and health in high-level training. At his gym he has a fantastic staple of powerlifters many of whom are women. At a recent powerlifting competition in Ohio for the Natural Athlete Strength Association, Jim had 13 women participating. Every competitor smashed their personal records and the team achieved many state and national records during the meet. He understands the balance of hard training to get results and good recovery. As fighters we need to understand these principles. As fighters, trying to get The most out of our bodies, we need to dig into the discipline and the work ethic of wrestlers, powerlifters, and all athletes that push their bodies past human expectations. As fighters we need to know how to do this safely and in a way that we can continue doing all of our other training and not tear ourselves down beyond recovery. I am very happy to have Jim on the podcast and I am very proud that he originally came from Canada. The man's name is Jim Laird and his gym is called Gym Laird spelled G Y M. Look him up at: gymlaird.com Here are some other links that might be helpful. http://robertsontrainingsystems.com/ http://www.posturalrestoration.com/ http://body.io/gym-laird-02-doc-kirk-parsley-why-sleep-is-important/

Today I am interviewing Jonathan Bailor, for all the new MMA students out there who have a rough time getting the weight down when starting a training program and also for those of us who have difficulty keeping he weight off between fights. This is not about burning the last few pounds but how to get down to a manageable weight in a healthy manner.
Jonathan Bailor is a New York Times bestselling author and internationally recognized wellness expert who specializes in using modern science and technology to simplify health. He collaborated with top scientists for more than 10 years to analyze and apply over 1,300 studies. His work has been endorsed by top doctors and scientists from Harvard Medical School, Johns’ Hopkins, The Mayo Clinic, The Cleveland Clinic, and UCLA.
He is the founder of SANESolution.com and serves as the CEO for the wellness technology company Yopti®. After over 10 years of research he has developed a revolutionary new model for weight loss—and lifelong health. He exposes the fundamental flaw upon which the diet industry has been built: the “eat less + exercise more = weight loss” equation simply doesn’t add up.
He shows us how eating more—of the right kinds of foods—and exercising less—but at a higher intensity—is actually the key to burning fat, healing our hormones, boosting metabolism, and creating long-term weight loss.
So anyhow, if you want a great foundation for your diet pick up his book and check out his website for a great and very easy program for healthy weight-loss.
So sit back, grab some kale and enjoy!

Paul Jaminet is a scientist (Ph.D. in physics, University of California at Berkeley, 1992; Astrophysicist, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, 1992-1996), Paul’s experience overcoming a chronic illness has been key to his views of aging and disease.
Paul’s wife, Shou-Ching, is a molecular biologist and cancer researcher at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Director of BIDMC’s Multi-Gene Transcriptional Profiling Core. Paul and Shou-Ching have been investigating the influence of diet upon health. They adopted a low-carb diet in 2005, and improved his health then adopted more of a Paleo approach. His diet is based on basic Paleo principals of healthy whole food with little or no processing, large amounts of vegetables and meat and seafood that are raised well.
Keep in mind that Paul is focussed on making people healthy, not working with MMA athletes to hack the most out of the system of the athlete but what I am trying to do with these types of interviews is to bring you information on how to create the most healthy lifestyle in order to keep you healthy and prolong your fighting career.
Anyways, as always, this guest is way smarter than me so I edited out most of my uhms and ahs to make myself sound a little smarter but he lays down some great info. I would recommend for anyone to pick up his book, it’s the best twenty bucks you will spend on your diet knowledge.

Mr. Dan and the beast Severn.
He has had one of the longest careers in MMA history.
According to Wikipedia he has had over 127 mixed martial arts fights, 101 wins, 17 by knockout, 60 submissions, but these are very conservative estimates of his true fight numbers
he has had a long history in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling. As a high school wrestler Severn was a two-time national champion and set eight national records in his career. he was inducted into Arizona State University's wrestling hall of fame at the end of his college career. He was two-time All-American at Arizona State University,[3] [4] and a wrestling coach at both Arizona State and Michigan State in 1984 and 1988,
He was a Olympic trials finalist. he lost the final qualifying match in controversial fashion to eventual gold medal winner Lou Banach but his career was just beginning at that point.
He did quite a lot of no holds barred fighting before the ufc even became popular.
he was featured in USA Today, People, Karate and Kung Fu Illustrated, Black Belt Magazine, MAD, Full Contact Fighter, and many of the pro wrestling publications. he holds annual wrestling clinics for kids of all ages.
he opened a 10,000-square-foot training facility on his property called "Michigan Sports Camps" in Coldwater, Michigan. and they train individuals for mixed martial arts, boxing, kickboxing, amateur wrestling and professional wrestling.
Severn entered the UFC in 1994 at UFC 4: when I believe he was 37 where he impressed many UFC fans by executing two impressive back suplexes on Anthony Macias. THEN HE was defeated by Royce Gracie in an historic match that brought bjj huge attention.
He had a long career in ufc and many other promotions mfc, kotc, etc
has also trained and became a mentor to notable mixed martial artists including don fry and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans, The Ultimate Fighter’s Luke Zachrich, Sean Sherk, and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
Severn was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame at UFC 52.[6]
he started wrestling or “rasling” as he calls it in the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) in 1995, and defeated Chris Candido for his first NWA World Heavyweight Championship and went to hold the NWA Championship for four years, the longest reign in over two decades and currently the third-longest reign in the belt's history.
he was in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1998 but that story is along and interesting one for another day!
as you can see he credentials go on and on. I just want all the listeners to understand how much he has contributed to the world of wrestling and full contact fighting in general. We all owe guys like him a huge debt for their contribution to the sport we all love.

This is an interview I did with Larry Rousey one of the instructors at Carlson Gracie MMA who is in charge of the beginner programs for new MMA students. Larry breaks the program into two classes - standup and ground to keep it simple. He follows my first level boxing and kickboxing formula and also teaches basic wrestling and BJJ under the guidance of Marcus Soares so the students are given a very good base before starting in the main classes. Larry has been invaluable in this by giving the newbies a few weeks of basic training so when they show up at my class they are well prepared. This show will be great for the gym owners out there who have thought about starting a similar program and it will also help the new students out there as we discuss some of the things that we feel as essential for you to learn as a beginner.
