The Hollywood strike has now passed the 100 day mark with no end in sight. Just one week ago, on August 4, Writers Guild of America negotiators met for the very first time in three months with representatives of the major studios to discuss whether contract talks can resume. According to Bloomberg reporter Lucas Shaw, they “made zero progress. The two sides are no closer than they were at the start of the strike. They can’t even agree on how to resume negotiations.”
With much of the strike centered on the power imbalance between the major studios and their writers and the consolidation and lack of transparency among the streaming giants, we reached out to an expert on the issues of monopoly and corporate power in America for his take.
Matt Stoller is the Director of Research at the American Economic Liberties Project. He is the author of “Goliath: The Hundred Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy”, which Business Insider called “one of the year’s best books on how to rethink capitalism and improve the economy.” Stoller is a former policy advisor to the Senate Budget Committee and he also worked for a member of the Financial Services Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives during the financial crisis.
Matt's 2012 law review article on the foreclosure crisis, “The Housing Crash and the End of American Citizenship”, predicted the rise of autocratic political forces, and his 2016 Atlantic article, “How the Democrats Killed their Populist Soul”, helped inspire the new anti-monopoly movement. His writing has appeared in the Washington Post, the New York Times, Fast Company, Foreign Policy, the Guardian, Vice, The American Conservative, and the Baffler and Matt writes the monopoly-focused newsletter “BIG” with tens of thousands of subscribers. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Sam Wasson
Joining us for Episode 77 is "one of the great chroniclers of Hollywood lore" according to Janet Maslin of The New York Times, and "a fabulous social historian" and sleuth in the eyes of Hilton Als of The New Yorker. Sam Wasson is the author of six books on film, including The New York Times bestsellers Fifth Avenue, 5AM: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman; The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood; and Fosse.
An L.A. native, Sam studied Film at Wesleyan University and at the USC School of Cinematic Arts before publishing his first book, A Splurch in the Kisser: The Movies of Blake Edwards and in addition to his work as an author and publisher, Wasson has written for numerous publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The New Yorker, and has won three Los Angeles Press Club Journalism Awards. He’s served as a consultant for The National Comedy Center in New York and The Film Society of Lincoln Center, was a Visiting Professor of Film at Wesleyan University and Emerson College and, as a panelist and lecturer has appeared all over the world.
In 2020, Wasson and producer Brandon Millan founded Felix Farmer Press to publish necessary books on the art, business, culture and history of the Hollywood film. His latest book Hollywood: The Oral History - co-authored with renowned film scholar and educator Jeanine Basinger - was released last year and called “Hollywood’s ultimate oral history” by The New Yorker, and “majestic” by The Los Angeles Review of Books. Wasson’s biography of Francis Ford Coppola’s real-life dream studio, American Zoetrope, The Path to Paradise: A Francis Ford Coppola Story, will be published by HarperCollins this December. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Kristen Lopez
Kristen Lopez is author of the new book But Have You Read the Book? 52 Literary Gems That Inspired Our Favorite Films. In it, Kristen offers an endlessly fascinating look at 52 beloved screen adaptations and the great reads that inspired them. Some films, like Clueless — Amy Heckerling’s interpretation of Jane Austen’s Emma — diverge wildly from the original source material, while others, like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, shift the point of view to craft a different experience within the same story. Kristen explores just what makes these works classics of both the page and screen, and why each made for an exceptional adaptation — whether faithful to the book or exemplifying cinematic creative license.
Kristen is a pop culture essayist, TV editor for IndieWire, and she’s worked as an entertainment journalist for over 15 years, with her articles appearing at Variety, MTV, TCM, and Roger Ebert. A California native, Kristen was raised in a small suburb near Sacramento and graduated with a Masters in English from California State University, Sacramento. She is also the creator of the classic film podcast, Ticklish Business. In her free time, Kristen enjoys reading and finding Old Hollywood connections in her neighborhood. She joined us from her home in Los Angeles.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Chris Lemmon
With a career spanning over 40 years, Chris has starred in television series for all major networks, including Knot's Landing, Thunder In Paradise, Studio 59, Brothers Sisters, and most notably Fox's highly acclaimed network-starting situation comedy Duet. Plus over 25 feature films like Lena's Holiday, Just the Ticket, and That’s Life alongside his father.
Lemmon graduated California Institute of the Arts with degrees in classical piano and composition, as well as degrees in the theatrical arts, and went on to appear in numerous stage productions, including the west-coast tour of Barefoot In The Park, directed by the late Jerry Paris, the original award winning west coast production of Shay by Anne Commire, and the highly successful Love Letters with Stephanie Zimbalast.
He presently resides in New England where he writes and produces feature films and television and his 2006 memoir, A Twist of Lemmon, is a heartfelt tribute to his iconic father. When Jack Lemmon died in 2001, the world lost a two-time Oscar winner and perhaps the most beloved actor of his generation; but Chris Lemmon lost a father and a best friend. In A Twist of Lemmon, Chris shares family tales, intimate father-son conversations, and anecdotes from and about his dad.
Chris then took those stories and memories from the page to the stage, creating his one-man hit show Twist of Lemmon, sharing an intimate look into the experience of growing up in Hollywood, featuring nine of his original piano compositions, a narrative of touching and heartfelt stories, and laugh-out-loud anecdotes from his life and times in the world of Hollywood stardom. Chris joined from his home in Connecticut.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Eddie Muller
“The Czar of Noir” himself, Eddie Muller produces, programs, and hosts a national network of Noir City film festivals, including right here in Seattle, presented under the auspices of the Film Noir Foundation, a nonprofit corporation he founded in 2005 to rescue and restore films from America and abroad. The Foundation also publishes NOIR CITY magazine, the world’s leading publication on classic and contemporary noir.
Eddie is also the host of TCM’sNoir Alley and the prolific author of crime fiction like The Distance, and is a recipient of the Raven Award from the Mystery Writers of America. His other books include biographies like Tab Hunter Confidential, cinema histories including Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir and the upcoming children’s book Kid Noir: Kitty Feral and the Case of the Marshmallow Monkey. In his latest book, Eddie Muller’s Noir Bar: Cocktails Inspired by the World of Film Noir, Eddie pairs classic cocktails and modern noir-inspired libations with behind-the-scenes anecdotes and insights on film favorites like The Asphalt Jungle, The Big Sleep, and Nightmare Alley. Eddie Muller’s Noir Bar hits shelves on May 23rd and is available for pre-order now. Eddie joined us from his home in the Bay Area.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Richard Barrios
Richard is a writer, lecturer, historian, researcher, and accomplished author of several books, including Must-See Musicals: 50 Show-Stopping Movies We Can't Forget and West Side Story: The Jets, the Sharks, and the Making of a Classic for Turner Classic Movies, Screened Out: Playing Gay in Hollywood from Edison to Stonewall, Dangerous Rhythm: Why Movie Musicals Matter, and A Song in the Dark: The Birth of the Musical Film (which was awarded the Theater Library Association Prize).
Richard has lectured extensively, co-hosted the Screened Out series on TCM, appeared in many film and television documentaries in the United States, Great Britain, and Japan, and served as audio commentator for numerous DVD and Blu-Ray releases, including State Fair and South Pacific.
The publication date for his latest book from Oxford University Press is officially four days away, April 25th, but you can find it now everywhere fine books are sold. On Marilyn Monroe: An Opinionated Guide looks beyond the ballyhoo and legend at Monroe's best-known films, and some that even today remain obscure. Besides her films, it also addresses the work she did on television and the stage, as well as her underrated abilities as a vocalist. Richard joined us from his home in New Jersey.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Patricia Ward Kelly
Patricia is an accomplished writer, scholar, freelance journalist, and the widow and official biographer of Gene Kelly. She and Kelly met at the Smithsonian in 1985, when he was the host/narrator for a television special for which she was a writer. Soon after, he invited her to California to write his memoirs, a job for which she recorded his words nearly every day for over ten years. They were together until his death in 1996.
Currently, Patricia serves as Trustee of The Gene Kelly Image Trust and is the President and Creative Director of The Gene Kelly Legacy, Inc. She lives in Los Angeles where she is completing a book about her late husband. As part of this work, she is preserving and cataloging The Gene Kelly Archives — an extensive collections of letters, manuscripts, photographs, scripts, interviews, essays, poems, holograph notes, and memorabilia that will eventually be the basis of additional publications and, ultimately, the core of an innovative, virtual Gene Kelly “experience.”
Mrs. Kelly has recorded commentary for the DVDs of An American in Paris, The Pirate, Words and Music, Xanadu, and Hello, Dolly!, and is frequently called upon to introduce Gene’s films in theaters and at festivals, including two years at the TCM Classic Film Festival. She has been interviewed extensively on TCM and has represented her husband’s legacy on numerous PBS specials and pledge drives and on the popular television shows So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With the Stars. She regularly hosts scores of dancers and other artists from around the world at her home, sharing insights about the life and work of her late husband through an intimate tour of The Gene Kelly Archives.
Patricia has appeared in An Evening with Mrs. Gene Kelly in several cities around the world and her one-woman tribute — Gene Kelly: The Legacy, An Evening with Patricia Ward Kelly — sold out two nights at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on the occasion of Kelly’s centenary in 2012 and has been touring across the United States and abroad the past four years, with sold-out performances at Lincoln Center, The Pasadena Playhouse, Laguna Playhouse, the Sedona Film Festival, and many, many more.
In two weeks - Friday, March 17th through Sunday, March 19th - Patricia will be in Seattle to host another one of a kind event, this time at Benaroya Hall - Gene Kelly: A Life in Music. Gene Kelly dancing on the big screen accompanied live by the Seattle Symphony! Patricia joined us now from her home Los Angeles.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Kayla Boye

Kayla Boye is the writer, producer, and star of the one-woman show Call Me Elizabeth, chronicling the early life of Elizabeth Taylor. Set in May 1961, the play is inspired by Taylor’s conversations with writer Max Lerner as they discuss plans for a biography. Through a morning session with Lerner at The Beverly Hills Hotel, Taylor rediscovers her sense of self following her 1961 Academy Awards triumph and recovery from a nearly fatal battle with pneumonia. The play examines Taylor’s career, life, and loves, chronicling her survival in the face of adversity and tragedy, and illuminating the core compassion of her character that inspired her later activism in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Kayla is a Chicago-based artist whose credits include productions with Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Drury Lane Theatre, Porchlight Music Theatre, Mercury Theater Chicago, Music Theater Works, BrightSide Theatre, Citadel Theatre, Fireside Theatre, Capital City Theatre, Bigfork Summer Playhouse, and The Huron Playhouse. As an arts administrator, she has worked in development, marketing, and finance for Goodman Theatre and Writers Theatre, and she has served as a producer for Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s Garage Rep series.
As a consultant for the Artistic Fundraising Group, her portfolio included work for Arts of Life, BrightSide Theatre, Chicago Composers Orchestra, Chicago Mosaic School, Oak Park Festival Theatre, and Snow City Arts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she served as Executive Director of The Youngstown Playhouse and she holds a BA in Professional Writing & Editing from Youngstown State University.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Robert Bader
Robert Bader is an author, archive curator, and the writer, director, and producer of many things, including PBS’s upcoming episode of American Masters: Groucho & Cavett, debuting for all you Seattle folks at 8pm, Tuesday, December 27th, on KCTS9. Tune in and discover the enduring friendship between television personality Dick Cavett and his mentor, iconic comedian Groucho Marx. Their relationship is chronicled through interviews with Cavett, archival footage, and interviews with contemporaries like George Burns, Jack Paar and Woody Allen.
In 2018, Robert produced and directed another story of friendship, Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes which won the Critics Choice Award in 2020, the same year it debuted on HBO. Robert co-wrote the film with Cavett, chronicling Muhammad Ali’s life and career through the lens of his many interviews with Cavett and the documentary is available to stream on HBO Max and on DVD. He has also produced critically acclaimed television documentaries Dick Cavett’s Watergate and Dick Cavett’s Vietnam for PBS, produced numerous archival DVD and CD releases, including five acclaimed DVD sets of The Dick Cavett Show, two of You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx and two of Bing Crosby: The Television Specials.
Robert manages the archive of The Dick Cavett Show and is the curator of several important entertainment archives, including those of the estates of Bing Crosby, the Marx Brothers, and Danny Kaye. He also serves on the Board of Directors for The Al Hirschfeld Foundation and Marx Brothers Incorporated, and has helmed countless projects, shows, films, radio and CD releases, including the launch of the Film Preservation Society’s silent film restoration series on Blu-ray with the 1925 film Too Many Kisses, which features Harpo Marx. Robert is also the author of Four of the Three Musketeers: The Marx Brothers on Stage now available in paperback, and the editor of Groucho Marx and Other Short Stories and Tall Tales, an anthology of the comedian’s lost writings.
Robert’s most recent book is entitled Speaking of Harpo, co-authored with the late Susan Fleming Marx, Harpo’s widow. Susan appeared in three Broadway shows and twenty-eight films before she turned her back on a show business career she never really enjoyed or wanted. The role of her lifetime came when she married Harpo Marx in 1936. Together, they raised four adopted children and enjoyed one of Hollywood's happiest and most successful unions. But their twenty-year age difference made Susan a young widow in 1964.
Speaking of Harpo is Susan's account of her more than thirty-year adventure with Harpo including encounters with people like Charlie Chaplin, William Randolph Hearst, Salvador Dalí, Joan Crawford, Howard Hughes, Helen Keller, Bugsy Siegel, Sam Goldwyn, Ginger Rogers, and of course, the Marx Brothers. The book provides an inside look at the family and pulls no punches when discussing her brothers-in-law, who weren't always her favorite comedians.

As a director, Tara’s work has been seen in theatres in South Dakota, Road Island, Washington DC, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Georgia. As a playwright, she is the Winner of the 2019 Native Storytellers Contest, a 2020 and 2021 finalist for the National Playwrights Conference, and winner of the 2019 Native American New Play Festival. Her plays have been produced and/or developed all over the country.
Her plays have also been taught and/or are currently in the curriculum at Brown University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Arizona, UCLA, Oklahoma City University, and Northeastern State University, and University of Washington.
She is currently commissioned by Audible, Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Program, Company One Theatre, AlterTheatre Ensemble, Kitchen Dog Theater, the New Now Commission with Lauren Gunderson, Geva Theatre Center, Red Bull Theatre, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Kathryn Van Meter was the inaugural recipient of the Heilman & Haver 2021/2022 Best Choreography Award for Beauty and the Beast at the 5th Avenue Theatre. A champion of large scale community theatrical adventures, Kathryn choreographed As You Like It for Seattle Repertory Theatre’s PUBLIC WORKS program, and directed and choreographed Matilda at Village Theatre where she worked with Star 101.5 to generate The Matilda Movement, a program honoring local youth making a difference in their community.
Kathryn also served as the Interim Artistic Director of Seattle Children’s Theatre, where she created Ghost Light Stories, a weekly web series of ghost stories designed to help children process fear and anxiety around COVID- 19 and produced and directed So Many Heroes, a National Song of Thanks, with 75 youth from 16 cities across America. Kathryn’s work as a teaching artist has taken her around the world from Iowa to South Africa and Siberia. As an artist/activist, Kathryn worked with A.S.T.E.P. (Artists Striving to End Poverty) to develop One World Through Theatre, a generative theatrical conversation between students in South Africa, North Carolina, and Washington.
She was the series choreographer for the NETFLIX Original Series 13 Reasons Why and Crater, an upcoming feature for Disney+ and she recently made her debut as Intimacy Coordinator for the NETFLIX Original Series ECHOES, which spent two weeks at #1 worldwide. In 2016 she worked with the US Dept. of Labor to develop the national definition for the occupation of “Choreographer.” She is a five time nominee and two time Gregory Award winner for Choreography, and was the 2018 People’s Choice winner for Directing and Outstanding Performance as a Lead Actor.
Kathryn holds a BA in Theatre and a Minor in Dance from The College of William and Mary. She has served on the National Board of Governors for AGMA, the Seattle Liaison Committee for Actors Equity and was the Chair of the Seattle Steering Committee for the Society of Directors and Choreographers. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Lara Gabrielle
Lara Gabrielle is a writer, film researcher, teacher, and author of the new book from University of California Press, Captain of Her Soul: The Life of Marion Davies. Lara’s research has taken her all over the world, and she has spoken about Miss Davies at some of the world’s most respected classic film festivals. Her article on Marion’s transition to sound appears in the summer 2018 edition of the Missouri Review. Lara also wrote the program for the screening of The Red Mill at Kennington Bioscope Silent Film Festival in London and the liner notes for the recent restoration of When Knighthood Was in Flower. She also writes at Backlots, an award-winning classic film blog in operation since 2011. As a reporter, she annually covers such events as the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, the TCM Classic Film Festival, and Noir City. She recently appeared on the American Experience documentary Citizen Hearst, for which she was also a consultant and advisor. Lara joined us from her home in Oakland, CA.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Laura Galt
Laura Galt is a Tony Nominated Broadway co-producer (The Prom), indie film director, producer, casting director, assistant director, actor, educator/teaching artist, speech-language pathologist, and mom based in Austin, TX. She coordinated extras casting on Aged Out (starring Tye Sheridan of X-Men and Ready Player One) which premiered at SXSW 2018.
She is currently working on the producing/capitalization team for The Outsiders Musical (based on the SE Hinton novel/Francis Ford Coppola film) which is in development for Broadway. (World premiere-La Jolla Playhouse Feb/March 2023.)
Laura co-conceptualized and produced a SXSW 2018 panel, Hollywood to Broadway: Adapting Films for Stage, and the 2019 SXSW panel, Film & Music: Collaborating on Broadway.
She has served on Zach Theatre's Education Board and is currently involved as a teaching artist and judge for Young Playwrights for Change, a national middle school playwriting competition run by the American Alliance for Theatre and Education in collaboration with Zach Theatre. Young Playwrights for Change has a goal to produce meaningful conversations that will ripple across our nation to provoke change by sparking conversations and discussion throughout classrooms, schools, and communities.
Laura has also worked in Los Angeles at International Creative Management, as an associate publicist for Nancy Seltzer Public Relations, and was a part of the publicity team for Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Kathy Bates, Placido Domingo, Rob Reiner, and Jonathan Demme's acclaimed film Philadelphia. Laura was also Julia Louis Dreyfus's assistant and worked for Burt Reynolds Productions. In college, Laura interned for Senator David Boren.
She enjoys championing education, up and coming filmmakers, theatre, and dance, and has a goal of involving herself and others in stage and screen narratives that have relevant messages and shift representation paradigms for women, youth, and underrepresented populations.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Alicia Malone
Alicia Malone is an authority on classic, independent, and foreign films, and a passionate supporter of women in film. She has given two TEDx talks on the subject and her first two books, Backwards and in Heels and The Female Gaze – explore the accomplishments and obstacles women have faced throughout cinema’s history. Her latest book, Girls on Film: Lessons From a Life of Watching Women in Movies, was released in March and connects film analysis with her own journey of self-discovery—from growing up as a nerdy film lover in Australia to finding her voice as a woman on television.
Malone began her television career two decades ago in her native Australia, working behind the scenes as a writer, producer, and editor for movie-centric television shows. Her expertise in film saw her transition to host, interviewer, and film critic for television, radio, print, and online. In 2011, Malone moved to Los Angeles, and since then has appeared as a film expert on a variety of television channels and programs, including CNN’s The Movies documentary series, MSNBC, Access Hollywood, E!, Entertainment Tonight, MTV, and ABC’s 2019 Live from the Red Carpet Oscar pre-show.
She is a regular on Turner Classic Movies and the host of TCM Imports, showcasing cinematic treasures from around the world each Sunday. Her new show Follow the Thread airs on TCM (June 4) and HBO Max (June 17) and will explore the synergies between fashion and film, and cover a variety of topics at the intersection of the two, inspired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s new exhibition, In America: An Anthology of Fashion.
Previously, Malone was the host of FilmStruck, TCM’s streaming service for movie lovers, and was the host and creator of Fandango’s series Indie Movie Guide. Her dedication to film history and supporting women filmmakers saw her named one of LA Weekly’s People of 2019, and one of 100 #WorthyWomen of 2016. She can also be seen on the Criterion Channel and as the host of Focus Features' Reel Destinations series. Sloan De Forest is a writer, film historian, and all-around movie know-it-all. As a relative of talking-pictures inventor Lee de Forest, she has film history in her blood. She has authored three books in the Turner Classic Movies library: The Essential Directors: The Art and Impact of Cinema’s Most Influential Filmmakers (2021), Dynamic Dames (2019), and Must-See Sci-Fi (2018).
She is also a contributing author of Natalie Wood: Reflections on a Legendary Life by Manoah Bowman and Grace Kelly: Hollywood Dream Girl by Jay Jorgensen, and editor of the upcoming Psycho 60. She has written about film for Sony, Time Warner Cable, Bright Lights Film Journal, The Film Magazine, and other publications.
Her talking head has appeared on CNN’s 2019 series The Movies, as well as the 2022 series Hollywood Icons. Sloan has also made guest appearances on Turner Classic Movies and several podcasts, and served as a consultant on the 2020 HBO/Amblin documentary Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind.
She sometimes writes under a nom de plume, occasionally acts, and has been known to lecture film students on the wily ways of film noir dames. A native Texan, she now lives in Hollywood.

"Cemetery Club" Auditions at BCT

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Michelle Danner
Michelle Danner is a legendary acting teacher and founder of the Creative Center for the Arts and the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory. She is also now well-established as a successful feature film director. Her film “Bad Impulse,” a psychological thriller about family secrets and modern technology won Best Narrative Feature at the 2019 International Independent Film Awards and the Best Director Award at the 2019 Culver City Film Festival.
Michelle's other film “The Runner“, an action thriller and true-life coming of age story, has played at 28 festivals around the country and internationally. Danner won Best Director five times including at the Milan Gold Awards, the Montreal Independent Film Festival, and the Paris Play Film Festival.
Raised in a show business family with a deep appreciation for all of the performing arts, Danner also runs the boutique “Cinema at the Edge” film festival and recently directed a new one-person virtual play, Bonnie Culver’s “Norris,” starring Anne Archer, based on the memoirs of the widow of writer Norman Mailer.
A dedicated mom of two (one an aspiring filmmaker), Danner still has her “day job” – overseeing the faculty of the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory, and conducting her weekly acting class. Her list of students has included Christian Slater, Salma Hayek, Gerard Butler, Seth McFarlane, Penelope Cruz, Chris Rock, Gabrielle Union, and Zooey Deschanel.
A longtime student of legendary acting teachers like Stella Adler and Uta Hagen, Danner’s eclectic approach (which she calls “The Golden Box”) allows actors the freedom to employ a wide variety of techniques. She joined us from her home in LA.

Well-known Los Angeles cardiologist and actor Dr. Rico Simonini. Rico originated the role of Frank Sinatra in Willard Manus’ play “Frank & Ava” in 2014 and again in the 2018 film by the same name, which he adapted and co-produced. Today’s interview took place on January 25th, the 32nd anniversary of Ava Gardner’s death, and in a few moments we’ll hear from Rico about his film and the woman who saved Sinatra, by first destroying him.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Rico Simonini
Dr. Rico Simonini is a leading Los Angeles cardiologist and accomplished actor, writer, and producer. As an actor Rico has enjoyed the opportunity to play leading roles in dozens of plays on stages in New York, Los Angeles, and a few places in between, working the boards as Ricky Roma (Glengarry Glenn Ross), RP McMurphy (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), Daniel Kaffee (A Few Good Men), and Joe Pendleton (Heaven Can Wait) in addition to originating over a dozen roles in dramas by local playwrights - all while maintaining his cardiology practice.
Like Anton Chekhov, Somerset Maugham, and Arthur Conan Doyle before him, Rico remained married to medicine while pursuing his paramour, the theater, wherever his career would take him. And after being recruited by one of Los Angeles' most prestigious medical centers, he found himself being recruited by his clients to indulge his fancy for film and theater.
This led Rico to study the craft with various mentors including the Baron-Brown Meisner Studios as well as the Actors Studio. In 2014, playwright Willard Manus chose Rico to originate the role of Frank Sinatra in "Frank and Ava" a two-person play developed at the Actors' Studio, and based on true events, portraying the stars’ iconic and tumultuous romance.
Inspired by the story of Sinatra's redemption and resurrection despite improbable odds, Rico undertook the screenplay adaptation and his first feature film “Frank & Ava” premiered in 2018, with a global release in early 2019. It’s the story of Sinatra as never told before and Ava Gardner, the woman who saved him, by breaking him. Rico joined us from his office in Beverly Hills.

Kaytlin McIntyre is a director, producer, and casting director based out of Seattle and is an Associate Artistic Producer and Director of Casting and she also heads up new play development at Seattle Rep. She grew up outside Kansas City and was introduced to theatre by accident, driving her dedication to reaching new audiences with accessible and magical stories. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Stewart Lyons
Stewart Lyons is a Co-Executive Producer, Line Producer, and Production Executive with extensive experience with most major studio, network, cable, and streaming television companies including Netflix, Sony Pictures Television, Warner Brothers, Amazon, HBO, Weinstein Productions, NBC, and CBS. He has worked on 33 television series, 27 pilots (20 ordered to series), and dozens of feature films and television movies.
He was recently Director, Original Series Production, for Netflix and prior to that assignment was Co-Executive Producer for the premiere season of “Better Call Saul”. He won 2 Emmys as Line Producer for “Breaking Bad”, the most critically acclaimed series in the history of television. He also received two Directors Guild Awards, two Producers Guild Awards, a Golden Globe, and two Peabody Awards for this series. He was also the only person, cast or crew, who was on set for every day of the production of "Breaking Bad".
In addition to his regular production positions, his work as a production consultant includes scheduling and/or budgeting over 160 pilots and television series for streaming, cable, and broadcast companies for projects throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. In 2015, he was the first television line producer to be the subject of "An Evening With..." hosted by Senator Christopher Dodd at the MPAA in Washington, DC.
Stewart has lectured at the Directors Guild, the Producers Guild, Chapman University, USC's Peter Stark Program, UCLA, the University of Maryland, and in both England and Germany about set operations, scheduling, budgeting, and the development of "auteur" television. He received his BFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and his MBA from NYU's Stern School of Business. He is a graduate of the DGA/Producers Training Program and currently works as adjunct Professor at DePaul University instructing in creative producing at their Los Angeles location for masters degree students. He joined us from his home in Oxnard, CA.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Voice Actor Rob Paulsen
We’re pleased to ring in our 50th episode with a man who has given voice to some of the most popular and timeless animated characters of our generation. Rob Paulsen was born in Detroit, MI, and at an early age, fell in love with the talents of comedians like Pat Paulsen, Foster Brooks, Red Skelton, Carol Burnett, Jonathan Winters, Peter Sellers, and the cast of Monty Python. His first role as an entertainer was as a singer, which trained his ear, eye, and voice to work together in a wide array of styles.
Rob hit LA in the 1970’s intending to be a live action actor but quickly fell under the spell of the Groundlings, the legendary Los Angeles’ comedy/improv troupe, where he befriended and worked with Phil Hartman, Paul Reubens, Lynne Marie Stewart, John Paragon, Cassandra Peterson, and Laraine Newman. His skills honed, he landed his first voice gig on “GI Joe” which opened the door to Hanna-Barbera and veteran director Gordon Hunt, who cast Rob as one of Rob favorite characters from boyhood, Hadji, in a revival of the classic series “Jonny Quest.”
That early success came right at the advent of the cable revolution and the millennial baby boom, and a sudden demand for family-oriented programming that would enchant young viewers as well as their parents. Disney, Warner Brothers, and Hanna-Barbera all started reviving old series and creating new ones, while networks like Nickelodeon and other syndication outlets began demanding more original daytime programming and Rob and his colleagues were part of it all.
Rob is best known for bringing life to beloved characters like Yakko on “Animaniacs”, Raphael on “TMNT”, Pinky and Dr. Scratchansniff on “Pinky and the Brain”, Carl Wheezer on “The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius”, and many, many more throughout a career spanning five decades.
After fighting a successful battle with throat cancer in 2016, a story detailed in his 2019 memoir “Voice Lessons”, Rob is back and busier than ever and still one of the hardest working, most in-demand, and beloved voice artists in the industry. In 2020 he reprised his role as Yakko in a reboot of “Animaniacs” on Hulu and has set new dates for his live show, “Animaniacs In Concert!”, performed with live music in symphony halls and theatres around the country. He is an outspoken advocate for people battling cancer and frequently makes time to bring joy and comfort to fans of all ages, all over the world. Rob joined us from his home in San Simeon, CA.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: New York Times Best Selling Author, Scott Eyman
Scott Eyman is the biographer of stars like John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda, Earnest Lubich, John Ford, Cecille B. Demille, and he joined us back in May for Episode 28 to celebrate the release of his last book Cary Grant: A Brilliant disguise.
Scott’s latest work “20th Century-Fox: Darryl F. Zanuck and the Creation of the Modern Film Studio” comes to us from Turner Classic Movies and examines one of the preeminent producers of films, filmmakers, and stars for 85 years, focusing on the man most responsible, producer and movie mogul Daryl F. Zanuck.
Scott is a prolific author with three of his books New York Times bestsellers. He has been awarded the William K. Everson Award for Film History by the National Board of Review and he teaches film history at the University of Miami. Scott joined us from his home in West Palm Beach.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Entertainment Business Reporter Diane Haithman
Diane Haithman recently left a job as Staff Reporter at the Los Angeles Business Journal to take on a new challenge as Senior Entertainment Business Reporter at online news website TheWrap. She was a longtime contributor to entertainment industry website Deadline Hollywood and an Arts and Entertainment Staff Writer for the Los Angeles Times before embarking on an independent writing and teaching career.
The recipient of two Los Angeles Press Club Awards, Diane first joined the Los Angeles Times covering the television industry before moving to the arts and culture beat for most of her career. Prior to joining the Times, Diane was West Coast Bureau Chief and Hollywood columnist for the LA-based Detroit Free Press. She has been a Critic Fellow at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s New Playwright’s Conference and has also written for The Hollywood Reporter, Angeleno and Coast magazines and many other publications.
Diane is a graduate of the University of Michigan Honors College with a joint degree in English and Psychology and is currently an adjunct Professor of Entertainment Journalism at Emerson College LA in Hollywood. She is also an author. Her novel Dark Lady of Hollywood, a merry mashup of the TV industry and the world of Shakespeare, was published to critical acclaim in 2014 by Harvard Square Editions and is currently available in both paperback and Kindle. Diane joined us from her home in Los Angeles.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Jason Kindt of the Actor Fund
Although Jason had a passion for the theater and participated in many high school productions, he quickly realized that his enthusiasm for musical theater does not make up for his lack of pitch. So, naturally, he went to medical school. Jason graduated from Ursinus (ER-SINUS) College in 1995 and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1999.
Jason is board certified in Family Medicine and worked for the Reading Health System in Hamburg, PA, where he was voted “best family practice” five years in a row, until 2013. After that he HAD to be closer to Broadway so he moved to New York City and worked in urgent care in Manhattan, leaving him plenty of opportunity to catch all the shows in town. Jason is a theater person at heart and is very excited to work with this community. He is a loving and caring family physician who is dedicated to helping his patients thrive in every aspect of their lives. He joined us from his office in Times Square.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Karolyn Grimes (Zuzu Bailey)
Karolyn is a former child actor, author, retired medical technician, mother, grandmother, and for years the unofficial ambassador for the 1946 Frank Capra classic (and one of our favorites around the holidays) “It’s a Wonderful Life”. With James Stewart playing her father George Bailey, Karolyn starred as Zuzu, uttering those timeless words, “Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.”
Karolyn made 16 films between 1945 and 1952 and appeared alongside John Wayne, Cary Grant, Bing Crosby, Loretta Young, Fred MacMurray, Betty Grable, Danny Kaye and, of course, the immortal James Stewart. At age six, she had already appeared in four films when the part of Zuzu came along. It was just another small part, but one that has made an indelible imprint on the American consciousness. She joined us from her home in Weed, CA.

Marq Evans is an award-winning independent filmmaker and creative entrepreneur. His most recent documentary "Claydream" premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival to critical acclaim. His debut feature film "The Glamour & the Squalor" won top prize at film festivals around the world before being acquired by Red Bull Media House. He is represented by XYZ Talent Management.
In addition to film, Marq has produced commercials for clients including the Smithsonian Institute, U.S. Navy, the government of Haiti and Clinton Global Initiative. With his wife, Angela, and son, Jude, Marq leads The McCaw, a boutique creative studio. The family business creates film, books, photography and other unclassifiable works such as the Cow by Bear dinner party experience.
Marq holds an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Washington State University. He lives and works in Bremerton, Washington where he teaches Digital Filmmaking at Olympic College.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Kathy Garver
Most fondly remembered for her starring role as “Cissy” in the long running CBS hit, “Family Affair”, Kathy Garver has garnered critical acclaim in movies, stage, radio, voice-over animation, and audio book narration.
Legendary Cecil B. DeMille was one of the first to recognize Kathy’s talent. Originally hired for a small part in the epic motion picture “The Ten Commandments”, Kathy was noticed by the great director who had special scenes written into the movie to highlight the little girl.
During her teenage years, Kathy added radio and stage to her burgeoning film and television career and was a freshman majoring in speech at UCLA when she was cast in “Family Affair” to star as “Cissy” alongside Brian Keith and Sebastian Cabot. One of the warmest and most enduring series of the 1960’s and 70’s, Family Affair earned Kathy a host of accolades such as Best Actress from the “Family Television Awards” and continues to be popular today and is available on Amazon Prime.
Today Kathy is an active, accomplished, and versatile actress, appearing in such films as "Sweet November" and "The Princess Diaries". Kathy is also very much in demand for her numerous vocal characterizations and is best known as “Firestar”, a mutant super hero in the Spiderman and his Amazing Friends TV series. Kathy has also recorded audiobooks for Brilliance Audio, Dove, Listen and Live and her voice has been heard in "Apollo 13" (which was awarded the Academy Award for sound), "Ransom", "Back Draft" and "Jingle all the Way", all directed by Ron Howard.
Kathy also added author to her long list of accomplishments. Her first book, "The Family Affair Cookbook", was a tasty trip down memory lane and her 2015 memoir, "Surviving Cissy: My Family Affair of Life in Hollywood" was just released in paperback. This year, Kathy has two more books scheduled for publication: "TV Dinners with a Side Dish of Stars" and, to celebrate the 55th anniversary of "Family Affair", "Family Affair: A Pictorial Scrapbook" will be released in September.
Currently, Kathy can be seen on her YouTube channel cooking show, "Cooking with Kathy and Scot" and she’ll soon be launching a podcast called "All Things Classic" with director, writer, producer John Norton. She is a regular at comic conventions and autograph shows where she greets her many fans. Kathy joined us from her home in Bell Canyon, CA.

Kathy has also recorded audiobooks for Brilliance Audio, Dove, Listen and Live and her voice has been heard in Apollo 13 (which was awarded the Academy Award for sound), Ransom, Back Draft and Jingle all the Way, all directed by Ron Howard.
Kathy also added author to her long list of accomplishments. Her first book, The Family Affair Cookbook, was a tasty trip down memory lane and her 2015 memoir, Surviving Cissy: My Family Affair of Life in Hollywood was just released in paperback. This year, Kathy has two more books scheduled for publication: TV Dinners with a Side Dish of Stars will be released in May and to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Family Affair, Family Affair: A Pictorial Scrapbook will be released in September.
Currently, Kathy can be seen on her YouTube channel cooking show, Cooking with Kathy and Scot and she’ll soon be launching a podcast called All Things Classic with director, writer, producer John Norton. She is a regular at comic conventions and autograph shows where she greets her many fans. Kathy joined us from her home in Bell Canyon, CA.

Born a heterochromatic baby (put down the medical reference book - it means she's got two different colored eyes) with the last name "Bible" on Halloween night, Karie was destined to be nothing if not unique. Her passion for history and Hollywood's past led her to starting a cemetery tour in 2002 under the guidance of historian Marc Wanamaker. In keeping with her love of living history, she gives the tour in vintage gowns from her collection that spans the 1920s through the 1950s.
Karie has lectured at The Old Town Music Hall, The Queen Mary, The Homestead Museum and is also a "Lady in Black" to honor silent film star Rudolph Valentino. Plus she created the website and e-newsletter FilmRadar.com about specialty film events in Los Angeles. Karie has appeared in segments for Turner Classic Movies, CNN, History Channel, and Travel Channel. She co-authored the book "Location Filming in Los Angeles" with historians Marc Wanamaker and Harry Medved and co-authored "Hollywood Celebrates the Holidays" with Mary Mallory.
A vintage lifestyle devotee, she lives in a 1920s apartment and hosts "Hollywood Kitchen" where she makes the recipes of stars from Hollywood's Golden Age, all while interviewing historians, authors, and her fellow film lovers. She joins us from her home in Los Angeles.

Professor Tim Hagan is full-time faculty at OC and is the Founder of the OC Film School and Chair of the Digital Filmmaking Department where he teaches acting, directing, and film studies. Prior to joining OC, Tim worked as an actor, director, and writer. After graduating and while working at the Yale Repertory Theatre, Universal Studios placed him under an exclusive contract and moved him to Los Angeles where he appeared in television and film in many guest star and chief supporting roles during the ‘70s and ‘80s.
While a professional actor, Tim was fortunate enough to work in repertory theatre, film, episodic television, daytime dramas, movies of the week and commercials. After gaining membership in The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, he was accepted into the Academy's prestigious Director's Group. While in the Director's Group, he was mentored by veteran Hollywood director, George Tyne. Tim wrote and directed several short film projects on the Warner Brothers Studios' lot. He has directed film and theatre in both Los Angeles and New York, and worked in Hollywood as a screenwriter. He also previously taught at several public colleges and private conservatories. Tim holds a MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

When it comes to interviews, award-winning entertainment writer Susan King is as accomplished as it gets. You heard some of the big names she’s spoken with over the years, many of whom Susan grew up watching on the big screen. She fell in love with movies at the age of three watching Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) on television and Houseboat at the movies with her parents. Susan quickly became obsessed, as her parents took her to everything from Pillow Talk, The Parent Trap, The Apartment, and Ride the High Country. Susan became a more serious student of cinema at 17, when she was introduced to such foreign films as Francois Truffaut’s Jules & Jim; Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast and Orpheus; and Jean Renoir’s Grand Illusion, when she watched the PBS series Film Odyssey hosted by Charles Champlin.
Susan earned an M.A. in film history and criticism from USC and then put it to good use at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, where she worked for a decade, and the Los Angeles Times, where she was an entertainment writer for 26 years, interviewing such legends as Helen Hayes, Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Janet Gaynor, Loretta Young, Lena Horne, Gregory Peck (Susan played 1930 movie trivia with the actor), Sidney Poitier, Charlton Heston, Debbie Reynolds, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, and Leslie Caron. Susan was awarded the Press Award from the Publicist Guild in 2012, and the Roger Ebert Award for Diversity in Film Journalism by the African American Film Critics Association in 2015. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Tracey Goessel
Although both a physician and an entrepreneur, Tracey Goessel’s true passion is silent film history. In 2015 she published The First King of Hollywood, a biography of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., dubbed by The New York Times to be "a buoyant handspring of a book... one of the most delightful Hollywood biographies to slide down the mast in years.” The book has just come out in paperback in 2018. In addition, she founded the nonprofit Film Preservation Society, which has recovered and restored several silent films formerly thought to be lost or unavailable for viewing, including Fairbanks’ Mr. Fixit, The Good Bad Man, and The Halfbreed. FPS funded the software that enables the Library of Congress to scan original paper prints of silent films from the first decade of the 1900s, and currently the goal is to restore all 485 D.W. Griffith Biograph films that were made between 1908 and 1913.

Scott Eyman is the author or co-author of 15 books, including Empire of Dreams: The Epic Life of Cecil B. DeMille, Lion of Hollywood: The Life and Legend of Louis B. Mayer, and Print the Legend: The Life and Times of John Ford. Scott also penned the bestseller John Wayne and (with actor Robert Wagner) the bestsellers Pieces of My Heart and You Must Remember This. He also wrote Hank and Jim: The Fifty-Year Friendship of Henry Fonda and James Stewart and, his latest, Cary Grant: A Brilliant Disguise. Scott was formerly the literary critic at The Palm Beach Post, writes book reviews for The Wall Street Journal, and has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Chicago Tribune.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Perry King
Perry attended Yale and Juilliard where he studied with Orson Welles’ production partner and collaborator John Houseman, and also with Stella Adler at her School of Acting and made his film debut in 1972 in Slaughterhouse-Five.
Perry auditioned for the role of Han Solo in Star Wars and, after the role went to Harrison Ford, played Solo in the radio adaptations of all three original films. In 1984, Perry was nominated for a Golden Globe for the TV movie The Hasty Heart and, that same year, he landed the role of Cody Allen on the series Riptide, which he appeared in from 1983 to 1986.
In the mid ‘90s, Perry starred in the television adaptation of A Stranger in the Mirror and appeared on Melrose Place. He has also appeared in Spin City, Will & Grace, Eve, and Cold Case and as the President of the United States in the 2004 film The Day After Tomorrow.
Perry directorial debut The Divide, in which he also starred, won 16 industry awards and appeared at the Canne Film Festival. He was awarded a Special Jury Award for Performance at the Arizona International Film Festival, Best Actor honors at the California Independent Film Festival, and Best First Time Director from the London Independent Film Awards. Perry joins us from his ranch in Cool, CA.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Robert Bader
Robert Bader is the curator of several important entertainment archives, including those of the estates of Bing Crosby, the Marx Brothers and Danny Kaye. He also manages the archive of The Dick Cavett Show and serves on the Board of Directors for The Al Hirschfeld Foundation, Marx Brothers Incorporated, and the Film Preservation Society.
Through his own company, Cavalier Films, Robert produced and directed Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes which premiered in 2018 and was nominated for a Critics Choice Award in 2020, the same year it debuted on HBO. The film chronicles Muhammad Ali’s life and career through the lens of his many interviews with Dick Cavett and will be released on DVD this June. Robert co-wrote the film with Cavett and his next archive project is a film about Cavett and Groucho Marx that will debut on PBS in 2022.
Robert is also the author of Four of the Three Musketeers: The Marx Brothers on Stage and the editor of Groucho Marx and Other Short Stories and Tall Tales, an anthology of the comedian’s lost writings.
Robert has produced critically acclaimed television documentaries on Cavett’s career for PBS, produced numerous archival DVD and CD releases, including five acclaimed DVD sets of The Dick Cavett Show, two of You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx and two of Bing Crosby: The Television Specials. And he has both worked in radio and released CD’s including numerous Bing Crosby titles and The Rosemary Clooney CBS Radio Recordings. Robert has helmed countless other projects, shows and films and most recently launched Film Preservation Society’s silent film restoration series on Blu-ray with the 1925 film Too Many Kisses, which features Harpo Marx.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Frank Ferrante
Mr. Ferrante is an actor, director and producer, and recipient of New York's Theatre World Award for 'Outstanding Debut,' a New York Outer Critics Circle nomination, London's Laurence Olivier Award nomination for 'Comedy Performance of the Year,' Washington D.C.'s Helen Hayes nomination and two Connecticut Critics Circle Awards. His international and PBS performances in the title role in Groucho: A Life in Revue received not only acclaim from critics and audiences but from the Marx Family.
Frank is one of the busiest touring performers in theater today with over 3,000 performances as 'Groucho' internationally in 500 cities. Ferrante was discovered by Groucho’s son playwright Arthur Marx when he was 22 and was subsequently cast to portray Groucho for the heralded 1986-87 production of Arthur's off-Broadway production Groucho: A Life in Revue.
In 1996, Frank starred Off-Broadway in the 'Groucho' role in the Marx musical The Cocoanuts written by George S. Kaufman who Ferrante portrayed in his one-man show By George - which he also wrote. And three-and-a-half decades onstage, Frank has performed before millions of audience members including some talented friends: Sean Penn, Hal Holbrook of Mark Twain Tonight, Robin Williams, Carol Channing, and Kaye Ballard; each one utterly impressed by his talent.
Off stage he has appeared on Children's Hospital and provided voice-work on SpongeBob Square Pants and The Garfield Show. And along with his acting work, Frank is also the owner of Groucho Marx Productions, Inc. which represents the name and likeness of the iconic performer. The film of his stage show An Evening With Groucho premiered in March, 2021 in Austin, Texas and on October 19th, of this year, Frank will receive a ‘star’ in Palm Springs, California on the Walk of Stars on Palm Canyon Drive. Frank joins us from his home in Los Angeles.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Gregg Barbanell
Gregg is originally from San Francisco, CA, and graduated with a BFA in film from California Institute of the Arts. He’s been a Foley artist for 43 years with 573 IMDb credits to his name. Notable credits include: In Film - El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, The Revenant, Suicide Squad, Little Miss Sunshine, Spirited Away, The Fast and The Furious, Dumb and Dumber, My Cousin Vinny, Point Break, and Wall Street. And on television: Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Walking Dead, Chicago PD, Chicago Med, Law and Order: SVU. And in Video Games & Cinematics: Overwatch, World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Call of Duty, Diablo III, Lost Planet, Gears of War, and Need for Speed. Gregg has received 13 Emmy nominations and won in 2004 for the documentary Dinosaur Planet. His work has also landed him 32 Motion Picture Sound Editors nominations and nine wins. Gregg has worked for Disney Studios and Warner Brothers and is currently employed at NBC Universal.

Jeremy is an author, film historian and commentator. His new book, The Essentials Vol. 2: 52 More Must-See Movies and Why They Matter, was recently published by Running Press and Turner Classic Movies. It is his second companion book to TCM’s long-running “Essentials” program which profiles the most vital and influential movies in film history.
In addition to the two Essentials books, Jeremy has written Christmas in the Movies: 30 Classics to Celebrate the Season, Lawrence of Arabia: The 50th Anniversary, two essays in The Call of the Heart: John M. Stahl and Hollywood Melodrama, contributions to Jeanine Basinger’s 2003 edition of The World War II Combat Film: Anatomy of a Genre, numerous essays and liner notes for home entertainment releases, including four Frank Capra titles; and over six hundred programming articles to date for the Turner Classic Movies website.
Jeremy’s commentating work includes fourteen audio commentaries for the Blu-ray or DVD release of classic films, most recently Wings of the Hawk, and stints as a guest host on TCM with Ben Mankiewicz.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Jodi Rothfield
Originally from New York, Jodi attended Smith College and graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree in African American Studies. Her professional career began as a music producer and manager handling NYC’s top session players and rock bands. Her bands played at the notorious New York City rock houses CBGB’s, TRAX and Great Gildersleeves, opening for such acts as Talking Heads, Blondie and Guns & Roses. Jodi also worked as a producer for several music houses producing scores and jingles for films, television and radio. Her casting career began in Los Angeles in 1987 under the tutelage of Ronnie Yeskel and Gary Zuckerbrod. Jodi moved to Seattle in 1989 to be with her husband, a native of Washington state, and is now a 32 year veteran of casting for film (Grassroots, Sleepless in Seattle, The Ring, Smoke Signals, Life or Something Like It, American Heart), TV (The Fugitive, Citizen Baines, Under One Roof,) and lead actor searches for features including The Spiderwick Chronicles, Speed Racer, Signs, Hearts in Atlantis, Stepmom, Great Expectations and many, many more. Jodi is also an adjunct instructor at Cornish College of the Arts and The Professional Actors’ Training Program at University of Washington. Jodi loves actors and is a devoted theatergoer.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Tracey Goessel
Although both a physician and an entrepreneur, Tracey Goessel’s true passion is silent film history. In 2015 she published The First King of Hollywood, a biography of Douglas Fairbanks, dubbed by The New York Times to be “a buoyant handspring of a book … "one of the most delightful Hollywood biographies to slide down the mast in years.” The book has just come out in paperback in 2018. In addition, she founded the nonprofit Film Preservation Society (FPS), which has recovered and restored several silent films formerly thought to be lost or unavailable for viewing, including Fairbanks’ Mr. Fixit, The Good Bad Man, and The Halfbreed. FPS funded the software that enables the Library of Congress to scan original paper prints of silent films from the first decade of the 1900s, and currently the goal is to restore all 485 D.W. Griffith Biograph films that were made between 1908 and 1913.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Tim Conway Jr.
Tim Conway, Jr. was born and raised in the City of Angels and proudly admits he survived 10 years in what he can only describe as a “youth detention center”, the Los Angeles Unified School District. He spent his childhood around Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Del Mar Racetracks with his father, Tim Conway of Carol Burnett Show fame, his four younger brothers and one older sister. During his early career, he produced his own internet radio show and thanks to its popularity, he was offered an opportunity to host a radio talk show on 97.1 KLSX-FM. Over twelve successful years, Conway’s show became famous for providing Southern Californian’s with a wide variety of entertaining topics including live police chases, Hollywood craziness, and sharing current events with a twist of humor. "What The Hell Did Jesse Jackson Say?" was a favorite segment and maintains a substantial cult following to this day. In 2009 when KLSX switched to an all-music format, Conway joined forces with KFI-AM 640, the No. 1 news/talk radio station in the country, to continue bringing his unique and comedic perspective to topics like politics, gambling, and more. Throughout his career, Conway has been featured on numerous television programs (Fox 11, CBS, NBC, ABC) and has received various industry honors including: a Golden Mic award, an Edward R. Murrow award, and a Marconi nomination for “Personality of the Year” in 2016. When he’s not busy entertaining listeners, he enjoys spending time with his family, supporting local charitable organizations, and hanging out at the racetracks! Engineering.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Danny Bilson
Danny Bilson comes from a long line of writers, from his Grandfather George, who was a producer/writer/director and head of the trailer department at Warner Brothers, to his grandmother Hattie, who interviewed stars for fan magazines and wrote shorts for RKO. After a long television and film career at Warner Brothers, Disney and Paramount himself, Bilson served as a senior executive in the video game industry at both Electronic Arts, and THQ. Danny has experience developing properties in film, video games, TV, theme parks and comic books. Bilson currently has a major motion picture, Da 5 Bloods, directed by Spike Lee, available for streaming on Netflix and front and center in this season’s award chatter. Danny has consulted at Walt Disney Imagineering as well as Tencent games where he runs the Tencent Spectrum training program for their senior producers and developers twice each year. Bilson has been on the faculty of the USC School of Cinematic Arts since 2005, where he teaches screenwriting, narrative design and Advanced Game Production. Danny is Chairman of the Interactive Media and Games Division and was recently appointed Director of USC Games, where he leads the joint program shared by both The School of Cinematic Arts and the Viterbi School of Engineering.

Annabel Cohen is Professor of Psychology at the University of Prince Edward Island and Adjunct Professor in the School of Graduate Studies at Dalhowsie University. She received her B.A. degree from McGill University, her M. A. and Ph. D. from Queen’s University in Psychology, and an Associateship of the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto. She established the UPEI Music Cognition and Auditory Perception Research and Training Laboratory for studies on musical grammar acquisition and for studies on film music perception, funded by two Canadian national granting agencies. Annabel was Editor of Psychomusicology: Music, Mind, & Brain and is an associate editor of Canadian Acoustics and a consultant on the editorial board for Music Perception, Musicae Scientiae, Music and the Moving Image, and Psychology of Music, and has been highly involved in many aspects of academia related to music in film and other media. She co-edited The Psychology of Music in Multimedia and is an elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Canadian Psychological Association, and the Psychonomics Society. Currently, Annabel has a new book entitled Congruence and Association in Film Music is under contract with Oxford University Press.

JJ is Chief Immersive Officer and Executive Vice President for AccessVR. He’s an innovator in immersive learning and experience design. Formerly Executive Director for the Shenandoah Center for Immersive Learning, in 2020, he led a Brain Trust for Virginia Governor Northam's Smart Communities initiative to build a Virtual City for Virginia, focusing on V-Commerce.
In 2002, he founded the Interactive Performance Lab at University of Central Florida, where he and his team designed one of the first live action simulation stages which would eventually be housed at Lincoln Center in 2016.

Although he had a passion for the theater and participated in many high school productions, Dr. Jason Kindt quickly realized that his enthusiasm for musical theater does not make up for his lack of pitch. So, he went to medical school. He graduated from Ursinus College in 1995 and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1999.
Jason is board certified in Family Medicine and worked for the Reading Health System in Hamburg, PA, where he was voted “best family practice” five years in a row, until 2013. After that he had to be closer to Broadway so he moved to New York City and worked in urgent care in Manhattan, leaving him plenty of opportunity to catch all the shows in town. Dr. Kindt is a theater person at heart and is very excited to be working with this community. He is a loving and caring family physician who is dedicated to helping his patients thrive in every aspect of their lives.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Jeremy Arnold - film historian, commentator and author of TCM's Christmas In the Movies: 30 Classics to Celebrate the Season
Jeremy's new book, The Essentials Vol. 2: 52 More Must-See Movies and Why They Matter, was recently published by Running Press and Turner Classic Movies. It is his second companion book to TCM’s long-running “Essentials” program which profiles the most vital and influential movies in film history.
In addition to the two Essentials books, Jeremy has written Lawrence of Arabia: The 50th Anniversary, two essays in The Call of the Heart: John M. Stahl and Hollywood Melodrama, contributions to Jeanine Basinger’s 2003 edition of The World War II Combat Film: Anatomy of a Genre, numerous essays and liner notes for home entertainment releases, including four Frank Capra titles; and over six hundred programming articles to date for the Turner Classic Movies website.
Jeremy’s commentating work includes fourteen audio commentaries for the Blu-ray or DVD release of classic films, most recently Kiss the Blood Off My Hands (1948) and The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), and stints as a guest host on TCM with Ben Mankiewicz. He joins us today from his home in Los Angeles.

Sarah Summers is a So-Cal native born to a musician/ poet father and singer/actress mother; performing is in her blood! She started local theatre at the age of 8 and attended Orange County school of the arts, graduating with the highest honors in acting and singing from Renaissance high school for the arts. She went on to study stage theatre at Long Beach City College. Throughout her childhood and early 20s she appeared in over 15 musicals/plays and in 2018 launched her film/tv career. Since then Sarah has appeared in over eight commercials for Disney+, BlueLand, T-mobile, and Tuition Monster. She has also been in three music videos, multiple short films, and has a starring role in the Amazon Prime special “Never Been Kissed” by Nicole Burch. Recently Sarah opened her first small business called “The Strawberry Bin” where she sells vintage and thrift clothing sizes 8-24, highlighting body positivity. She continues to audition regularly and hopes to land a regular TV role in 2021. Sarah joins us from her home in Long Beach, California.

OCA, which stands for Opportunity, Community, and Ability, is an organization dedicated to providing individuals and families with autism or other disabilities the opportunity to maximize their abilities through functional, behavioral, social, recreational, and vocational programs to live within the community. OCA was formed in 2008 by a group of volunteers dedicated to providing support to special needs athletes in the Orange County, FL area for participation in the Special Olympics. Since then OCA has grown, adding programs to support the special needs community, including the initiation of the Running Man Theater Company in 2017 that provides a creative outlet for participants through master classes, theory, and performance classes, summer programs, and participation in full theatrical productions.

Doug started performing on stage in high school and graduated with a BFA in Theater and Music from the University of Utah. Since moving to Seattle, he has appeared in hundreds of stage and screen productions over his 35+ year career. Some might recognize him from his lead role in the 2010 cult horror/comedy film "Zombies of Mass Destruction"; from various musical theater productions on Seattle area stages; and SYFY Channel's "Z Nation". Doug directed Second Story Rep's "A Christmas Carol" in 2018, as well as several music and corporate videos. He works heavily in Virtual Reality Production as a designer of 3D models, texture art, lighting, and animation, as well as freelancing as a motion designer and video producer. In June 2018 Doug founded his YouTube channel Augmented Actor, which combines his passions for theatre, film and design into a channel geared towards helping actors improve their craft and learn new tricks. In 2019 Doug expanded Augmented Actor to include a Facebook group, where members discuss daily subjects related to acting.

- 4 oz Tonic - we prefer Q Tonic
- 3 oz Gin (Aviation of course)
- .25 oz lime juice
- Add gin and lime juice to ice filled glass, stir. Top with tonic
Drink 2 (Trains) - Boxcar Cocktail
- Ingredients
- 1.5 oz Gin
- .5 oz Triple Sec
- .5 oz Lime Juice
- Dash Grenadine
- Simple Syrup (to taste)
- Egg White
- Shake all ingredients with ice filled shaker. Strain back into shaker and dry shake (no ice). Strain into chilled glass
Drink 3 (Automobiles) - Automobile Cocktail
- Ingredients
- 1 oz Gin
- 1 oz Scotch
- .75 oz Sweet Vermouth
- Dash orange bitters
- Stir all ingredients in ice filled stirring glass. Strain into chilled glass

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Local artist, dancer, choreographer, instructor, and admin of the Kitsap Theater Artists Facebook page, Scott Breitbarth
Scott Breitbarth is a local filmmaker, editor, videographer, stage director, choreographer, and Bainbridge Island arts educator. He grew up as a Kitsap theatre kid and dance student, laying the foundation for Kitsap County Musical Theater’s student choreographers before pursuing and graduating with a Film/TV degree from the infamous USC School of Cinematic Arts in 2015. Scott always likes to stay busy (as some of his friends say, maybe a little too busy) - a few of his projects in the last year include Ovation’s production of Bye-Bye Birdie (director, co-choreographer, projections), Bainbridge Ballet’s 2019 production of the Nutcracker (director, co-choreographer, projections) and as editor of The Edge Improv’s Letters From Isolation series. He just wrapped the final cut of the Seattle Men’s Chorus Holiday Special and he hopes to one day make a big film and actually have the time to watch it before it’s released!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Actor, dancer, choreographer and director Rebecca Ewen
Rebecca Ewen started her stage career at two months old, portraying baby Jesus in the church pageant. She received rave reviews when she was photographed pointing upward toward heaven. Growing up in a musical family, Rebecca performed in multiple community theatre shows each year. She attended Central Washington University and received a Bachelor’s degree in theatre and since graduating, has choreographed and directed countless shows at WWCA, including summer children’s workshops. She’s appeared in ‘The Snow Queen’, ‘Urinetown’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, and ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. Her favorite directing credits include ‘Dog Sees God’, ‘Romeo & Juliet’, ‘Pippin’, & ‘The Rocky Horror Show’.

2/3 ounce Midori melon liqueur
1/2 ounce Malibu rum
1/2 ounce pineapple juice
1/4 ounce blue curacao
1/4 ounce raspberry cordial
2 cherries
Cracked ice
Shake midori, malibu rum, pineapple juice and ice then strain into a 5oz cocktail or martini glass.
Add raspberry cordial and blue curacao, garnish with cherry(ies) and serve.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Actor Adrian De Groot, master of accent and dialect
Adrian has been active in Kitsap county community theaters for over 20 years. He first appeared at the Performing Arts Guild of South Kitsap in "The Foreigner" in 1998. Since then, he has been involved in over 30 productions, as an actor, light and sound tech, and stage manager. When he's not indulging in theater, Adrian holds down his day job as a programmer, and is graced with a wonderful family! His wife of 24 years and three kids are very supportive, and even volunteer in the lobby and hospitality roles at the Bremerton Community Theatre. As an actor, Adrian gravitates towards fun character parts, especially those with accents, including Agatha Christie's "Appointment with Death", where he got to work with your humble hosts.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Actor, director, playwright and author Dan Estes
Dan started his theater career in a Junior High School Production of "Boris and The Spaceman" where he played the part of Skinny. This led him to several roles throughout High School and his high school’s Thespian Group drama club where he served as Treasurer and Vice President. After High school Dan Took a hiatus of almost twenty years from the stage, but his second career started with a small role in "Gypsy" which snowballed into being involved in over 75 shows, about 20 as director. Dan recently retired from a 37+ years with the State of WA as a counselor, social worker, and educator, a career that culminated in teaching for the University of WA, training new social workers for the field. Dan has adapted two movies and one book into plays; one of them Alfred Hitchcock’s "The Trouble with Harry" has been produced in four states (most recently in Tampa, FL) and he is currently working on an abridged version of “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder. Dan's most recent writing project is book entitled “The Trump who Stole ‘Murica” - A Parody In Verse" based on the story "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Purchase the book now at Lulu.com.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Actor and Director Jeffrey Bassett
Jeffrey first stepped onstage in 1973 as the child lead Winthrop Paroo in “The Music Man.” Since then he has taken part in over 50 shows, mostly musicals, at over 20 different theaters. Jeffrey’s other passion is the law. He’s been in the field since 1985 and took the bench as a judge in Kitsap County in 2016 by gubernatorial appointment. He is a family man, married for 16 years to Michael his partner for 28, and is father to three boys. Jeffrey most recently appeared onstage for Paradise Theater’s “Annie” where he returned to his role as Daddy Warbucks. Along with acting, he has also worked as a stage manager, set designer and builder, as an assistant director, and has fully directed 10 plays, many for Bremerton Community Theater, where in 2018 he took a chance on Greg Heilman and Matt Haver, casting them as brothers, in Agatha Christie’s “Appointment With Death.”

Trailer: Death on the Nile
2 oz of Scotch 1 oz of sweet vermouth 1 oz of Amaretto (or almond liqueur) 1 dash of Triple Sec 2 drop of orange bitters
Add the Scotch, Vermouth, and Amaretto, then add a dash of Triple sec and a drop or two of the bitters. Swirl together and optionally serve with a large ice ball or whisky rock.
