I was just on the phone with Michael O’Casey from TRCP and Brian Grossenbacher and we all have been blessed to work and display our passions every day in nature. Our work takes us places when, just a year ago I was in a classroom. But bending toward MY sun was what put me on a path out of the classroom and onto a journey that has truly filled my spirit, from TEACHING in a new capacity (LTH with PFQF and BHA) to Guiding hunts and TEACHING and SHOWCASING my ART, DOGS, and KNOWLEDGE to people who seek new experiences in the Deep South.
- I am RESTLESS- seeking to explore new types of bird dogs, planning to go to France to look at an older breed of French Pointer (we will see), and investing my passions into getting Ícaro through the NAVDHA Utility Test down the road. My Sporting Life is a life of inquisition and exploration and I am grateful and blessed for that.

In June of 2022 Lauren Abbott, President of Ford Abbott Media, LLC, purchased the Field Trial Review. Abbott is an avid and passionate horse and dog lover and she wanted to keep Don, Tom and Nancy's legacies alive as well. Abbott's main goal was to expand Field Trial and Bird Dog stories throughout the entire year. She made plans to expand the publication beyond the annual special issue and transitioned it into a magazine.
Abbott's vision is to produce a high quality magazine for the sporting south. Hunt & Field's first rebranded issue will publish at the end of February recapping the 124th National Championships. It will highlight the 2023 National Champion, all the dogs contending for the Championship, the owners and handlers. It will also feature Historic Ames Plantation, Quail populations, Forestry & Conservation efforts as well as Deer related diseases and more.

In June of 2022 Lauren Abbott, President of Ford Abbott Media, LLC, purchased the Field Trial Review. Abbott is an avid and passionate horse and dog lover and she wanted to keep Don, Tom and Nancy's legacies alive as well. Abbott's main goal was to expand Field Trial and Bird Dog stories throughout the entire year. She made plans to expand the publication beyond the annual special issue and transitioned it into a magazine.
In October of 2022 the Field Trial Review officially rebranded to Hunt & Field Magazine. Hunt & Field will continue it's exposure of the National Championships and publish quarterly, highlighting all bird, gun, and hunting dog sports, along with horse field sports.
Abbott's vision is to produce a high quality magazine for the sporting south. Hunt & Field's first rebranded issue will publish at the end of February recapping the 124th National Championships. It will highlight the 2023 National Champion, all the dogs contending for the Championship, the owners and handlers. It will also feature Historic Ames Plantation, Quail populations, Forestry & Conservation efforts as well as Deer related diseases and more.

Have you been interested in learning about hunting, but don’t know where to start? Or maybe you just want to get more involved with conservation?
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and Minority Outdoor Alliance have a campfire going in Atlanta and there’s a spot open just for you. We're hosting a free, all-inclusive 2-day workshop for those that want to learn more about hunting, wild food, and the conservation community. Day one will be an evening event - we'll provide refreshments and help you to learn more about conservation and conservation groups. We'll have appetizers and door prizes to boot! Day two will be at a full day breaking down those initial barriers to understanding and getting started in hunting followed by an understanding of where to go next if you want to learn more or stay involved.
Let us help you get you safely outdoors and to find community, get involved with conservation, and harvest your own wild food. While we’re at it, come join us and let’s throw another log on.

In a precarious time for our Southern ecosystems, these ten under-the-radar scientists, advocates, and groundbreakers are saving endangered butterflies, defending the Everglades, fighting for shorebirds, creating art that speaks from the heart, and more
The methodology: To help select our Champions of Conservation, we called in experts with a broad range of perspectives, from sustainability in packaging to ecosystem and species restoration. “There is no place in the world that compares to the ecologically diverse habitat of the South,” says the Nature Conservancy’s Dale Threatt-Taylor. “I felt hopeful just reading about the work of the outstanding conservationists working to protect it.”

Durrell Smith is a Georgia-based hunter, bird-dog trainer, podcast host, and artist who cofounded the Minority Outdoor Alliance in 2020. The organization’s mission is to cultivate inclusiveness in the outdoors. Last year, Smith received the Orvis Breaking Barriers Award for his work bringing new participants into the upland bird hunting, bird dog, and wing-shooting communities.
Carol Denhof serves as president of the Longleaf Alliance, working across the Southeast to restore the region’s formerly dominant longleaf pine forests, which once blanketed up to ninety million acres from Texas to Virginia. She took the helm of the organization in 2019 and fosters partnerships, provides landowner assistance, and offers science-based outreach to promote longleaf habitat.
Wes Carter is the third-generation president of Atlantic Packaging, the largest privately owned industrial packaging company in North America. As a lifelong outdoorsman, he feels both a connection to the land and a responsibility to create sustainable supply chains. Through his A New Earth Project and other initiatives, he is committed to reducing plastic and partnering with outdoor enthusiasts, brands, and packaging suppliers to implement industry-level change.
Dale Threatt-Taylor brings twenty-five years of experience in conservation leadership to her role as the executive director of the Nature Conservancy in South Carolina. She oversees projects and partnerships ranging from forest restoration to the revival of living shorelines to species protection plans.
Simon Perkins took over as the third-generation president of Orvis in 2020, having started at the company eight years earlier after a stint as a hunting and fly-fishing guide in Montana. Under his leadership, the outdoor retailer continues to support conservation projects with such organizations as the Everglades Foundation, the Teddy Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, and Trout Unlimited, and supports diversity in fly fishing through its Breaking Barriers Awards and by becoming the first company to sign the Angling for All pledge along with Brown Folks Fishing.

- Through my work, I’m interested in connecting more unlikely individuals to conservation that might benefit from an alternative understanding of the impacts of climate change and solutions that address the disparities in conservation education and conservation access. More on this is future works and podcast episodes.

We’ve been having incredible success on both public and private land hunts this season. A record season to be totally honest, with a recent (estimated) 60 birds flushed, totaling 6 coveys and a number of singles pointed and flushed. Additionally, we made roughly 143 contacts with a total of 10 coveys this past MLK Day. My young dogs are getting great early exposure to wild birds and their development has been consistent and impressive each time, starting with my young Setter, Rosalee who had a great find on a crippled bird that got away from us and a beautiful point on a large, 20 bird covey. Jughead has also gotten in a great number of great points and even got a retrieve on a downed bird that ran into a hole. He dug that bird out and got it back to me. To add to the surprise, Dawson and I both shot banded quail on public land which was honestly my goal this season. So now I proudly rock a quail band on my lanyard.

I am also currently working on a screening/premiere for the DOGMEN film down in Thomasville. Christian Fitchtel over at OnX had the incredible idea to go above and beyond and get the film on a large screen in addition to showing it online. Stay tuned for those details soon.

In the episode, we discuss the origins of the ARI on the Aucilla River and their relationship with the Smithsonian Museum. There is the concern that we have raised a number of generations of citizens here who are disconnected from nature. Dr. Jim Dunbar talks about finding artifacts in the Aucilla River, giving a “Whitman’s Sampler” of what the world looked like during the pleistocene period of the Americas, specifically, here in the Southeast. Dunbar talks about the various species of animals that existed during the time and their effects on the landscape and on the habitat of the region. So join us again for another highly informative episode from another presenter at the 2021 Wildlife Arts Festival and learn more about how our native landscape has changed over many thousands of years since the Pleistocene.

Jane Marcum is the definition of Unlikely as I continue to be drawn to what that means. But, Jane is absolutely a sage of the world of the outdoors, and her conversation and wisdom seemingly infinite. I couldn't help but to be stunned at the wealth of knowledge she has, and still is giving back and reaching back...and still being real and everyday. And she came to visit Ashley and I to help plant our garden, plan out herbs to be grown around the kennels to ward off various insects, and to introduce us to 3 new bottles of our new favorite wines. She came over to deliver an education and teach us a word about sustainability, and as we continue to develop our friendship with Jane, I know that she’s already planted seeds of expansion and manifestation for us as a family. I’ve got much to learn from her on this podcast and our previous recording. She is a true pirate for life’s great bounty, a go-getter for all that the world has to offer to her individuality.

Field trialing as a sport has been at the defining end of bird dog development since the early days the American Field as reflected by the reports of Mr. A.F. Hochwalt. Since the mid to late 1800s and moving into the 21st century we have seen some of the most iconic names of bird dogs and their handlers cover the vast distances of the field trial circuit from Manitoba to South Georgia in hopes of revealing the next season’s set of Derby’s, Shooting Dog, and All Age champions. As the history of field trials expands, there are a number of young trainers who stand out to me and consistently produce and train superb field trial performers. It was no coincidence to talk to Diamond R Kennels Trainer Tommy Rice about the definition of a truly special dog as this season started off with a bang as he saw his dogs into great success. Handling at the Montana Open Shooting Dog Championship, Tommy handled Charitable Deed (owned by Keith Finlayson) into a Championship, and also handled Thrill Me (owned by Keith Finlayson as well) into a Runner Up Championship. Shortly after, at the All America Shooting Dog Championship, Rice handled Mac Stidham’s Grand Prairie Thrill into Runner Up success as well. I’m proud to say that Tommy is also a native Georgia boy and oddly enough we never crossed paths during my tenure in Albany. But all relationships will develop I the right time, and I’m was privileged to be able to get Tommy on the line as he ended his long day running dogs on the northern prairies. Speaking with a premier trainer like Tommy opened up a conversation about the culture of field trialing, its misconceptions, and the good men that judge these trials. The class and artistry that is expected and reflected in the performances of these dogs is a true testament to the breedings that make these “special dogs”. The term is specific and intentional. Tommy hits the nail on the head as he details what it takes for a dog to rise to the occasion. It is my hope that this conversation is a very candid and enlightening look into the field trial circuit from one of the all stars of the field trial game.

It requires using the right tools and learning to effectively and fluidly work your way around the dog, whether it’s personality be hard dog or soft. On this episode of The Gun Dog Notebook Podcast, the goal was to get down to the “nitty-gritty” of bird dogs, or as I’d like to call it… “birddoggin”. Our guest, Joe Plote of PSR Kennels, helps breakdown the various aspects of a life training and fixing bird dogs, from his early foundation learning from trainer Dave Walker, highlighting the path to training a truly “broke” dog, and even misconceptions on pedigree and breeding. Joe goes into further detail about is experiences as a trainer and taking in client dogs, and walks us through the process of rebuilding his kennel after the recent set of high force winds and tornados in the Midwestern states. Talking with Joe reminds us that it’s most important to train your dog to high standards, but also to train to the standards that make you happy.
It’s important to examine the various training literature that has been written by the trainers that came before this generation of wingshooters and dog handlers, but we also must carry the torch and pass down the knowledge of dog training and upland bird hunting. Joe is a true advocate for the next generation, but if you’re going to work dogs, you can take some notes on Joe’s training methods. Joe has a great deal to teach about many of the nuances of dog handling from observing the overuse of the word “woah”, misunderstandings of pedigrees and breeding, and simple tricks to keep bird dogs healthy at home and in the field. We even get into a bit of Lindley and West training techniques. Simply put, on this podcast, we air out as much training talk as we possibly could within the span of two episodes and share a great deal of laughter and good times within the conversation.
