In the world of physical therapy there are groups of clinicians that are either gun-ho for hands on joint moving/pushing and those who spend very little time there that report it's minimal utility. The balance is often in the middle. It can be extremely effective when used as an adjunct in the right situation for the right reason. As long as all things lead to better movement. I'm a huge fan of having options. Not training a skill, to not have confidence in its application, is not reason enough to not do it. If you choose not to, no worries, as long as there is a clinically minded reason based on the patient to back it up.

So much that when we are deprived of the opportunity to take action as we did (an athlete getting injured) we feel as though we lose part of ourselves (from I'm no longer an athlete to as extreme as a part of me has died). What's the hold up!? Well in chemistry and physiology (which is basically ccool applied functional chemistry) the hold up is literally called the Rate Limiting Factor. If we had more of it, we could do more; but we don't, so we don't. This is often due to speed of a reaction or lack of abundance of a substrate (physical material). Well now we're talking about injuries that we have as our own rate limiting factor. This is understandable. Our body has a protective mechanism. To truly heal and improve optimally we need to understand the concept of a rate limiting factor in regard to physical injuries, because unfortunently we usually do a really crappy job at that.

Uploading this episode after a long and good day of travel. Driving from NH to NY and catching up with great friends halfway. Today's Workout Wednesday is inspired by my recent bootcamp style training workouts. It is all about supersets, not switching off after you complete a desired rep count, rather performing for a time duration. The two most important factors for dictating what metabolic energy system we utilize is 1) Intensity, and 2) time/duration. When we define the time and give our max intensity we have successfully programmed to our desired (whatever that is) primary energy system. These are the primary means of evoking a targeted physiologic response. Physiologic responses always occur (one of many qualifications for life), now we just need to be mindful of which ones we want to adapt to and with.

The NFL season has technically already started, but it really kicks off today. As teams have new rookie contracts and massive trades, sometimes your favorite franchises can look, and feel, like totally different teams. Tuckman proposed his group development theory in the four common stages of forming, storming, norming, and performing. While these stages apply to any group, it ia best exemplified in sports. The great organizations recognize this and diligently work to progress their team where they need to go in order to reach their max potential.
