Join us today for our final week with The Worry-Free Parent miniseries. After talking about Understanding the Past and Help for the Present, it’s time to talk about Hope for the Future. In this week’s episode, we not only talk about hope, but also about trust. We remind you to trust the process, trust your gut and most importantly, to trust God. We give practical ideas around what that trust looks like in action. And speaking of action, we want to remind you to grab a copy of The Worry-Free Parent Workbook. The workbook allows you to take all the learning to the next level.

Keep learning. Keep practicing. You’ve got this.

As we continue journeying through The Worry Free Parent content, we’ve moved from understanding to help. This week we talk through help for the mind, help for the body and help for the heart. You’ve heard us say before, and we will keep reminding you, that we can only take the kids we love as far as we’ve gone ourselves. If it’s difficult for us to quiet the voice of worry, and practice these game-changing skills ourselves, it will be hard for our kids to do the same. Practicing these skills allows kids to see it on the grown ups they trust the most. It also allows us to be more of the parents (and people) we hope to be.

You likely know Dr. Curt Thompson from his ground-breaking work in The Anatomy of the Soul, The Soul of Shame and The Soul of Desire. We were honored to sit down in conversation with him to talk about his newest book, The Deepest Place: Suffering and the Formation of Hope.

We shared a rich conversation around what suffering and hope look like in the context of parenting. Dr. Thompson has worked at the intersection of neuroscience and Christian spiritual growth for decades. He was kind enough to share parts of his own story, and what he has learned through the journey of parenting himself. Enjoy this conversation with Dr. Curt Thompson.

Join us today as we continue on in The Worry-Free Parenting miniseries talking about how anxiety spreads...with the best of intentions. Whether it starts with the kids we love or with us, soon all of our amygdalae are firing together and no one is getting to a healthy, helpful conversation. In this episode of the podcast, we talk about how anxiety impacts families…in ways we recognize and even some ways we don’t. In fact, we’re going to outline the 5 ways we see anxiety impact parents the most. Help is coming. And hope, too!

Lisa Whittle is one of those people you meet and immediately feel like you’ve known each other forever! We loved getting to sit down with our old/new friend Lisa recently to talk life and parenting and Jesus being everything, as she does so beautifully in all the many places she serves. Lisa is a bestselling author, podcaster of three different podcasts, Bible teacher, ministry leader and mom to 3. And she must have more hours in a day than the rest of us cause we can’t even imagine how she does it ALL—and does it so beautifully, while offering great hope to all of us!

We had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with two remarkable folks who are also intentional parents. Lauren & Chris Tomlin were kind enough to join us in a conversation where they shared their stories of growing up, how they met, becoming parents, and the places God has called them. Chris has sold over 7 million records, won 23 Dove Awards and a Grammy. We loved spending time with these two folks and their willingness to step into such a thoughtful conversation as part of our Music City Series.

This week we have one of our favorite hosts from Dadville, Jon McLaughlin, joining us. You’ve heard Jon’s music from his amazing records, songs on some of your favorite TV shows and films, or maybe you know him from the film Enchanted and saw him perform on the Academy Awards (we had him tell that story!)

But hold your horses, we didn’t just snag Jon, we somehow persuaded his delightful, insightful, lovely wife Amy to join us. We found ourselves in the middle of an honest, authentic conversation about the ups and downs, good and hard, hopeful and heart-breaking moments of parenting with these two friends.

You know what it’s like to sit in conversation with folks who are full of wisdom, substance, honesty and humility? The kinds of folks you could ask questions to and learn from for hours on end? Those would be our dear friends Tom & Katie Douglas. Katie was a significant part of Daystar becoming what it is today, and she is still serving on our Board of Directors. She is full of passion and purpose, wisdom and generosity.

Tom is one of Nashville’s most beloved, revered and celebrated songwriters. He is behind many of the songs you’ve loved and known like The House the Built Me (Miranda Lamber), I Run to You (Lady A), and Grown Men Don’t Cry (Tim McGraw), to name a just a few. He is a Grammy winning, Oscar nominated, Billboard chart topping songwriter, who also released a critically acclaimed documentary- Love, Tom. He is wise and thoughtful, intuitive and intentional. We are thrilled to share this conversation with our friends, Tom & Katie.

We talk a lot about building resilience into kids in our offices. It felt timely and important to share a conversation with our friend, Rebekah Lyons, about her new book, Building a Resilient Life: How Adversity Awakens Strength, Hope, and Meaning. We talked about turning toward anxiety and not away from it, and even what that looks like in the context of parenting. We also talked about moving kids toward meaning and purpose, something we’ve seen bring about tremendous growth and change.

Join David, Sissy, and Melissa as they focus on HOPE. This was set to be recorded last week and little did they know how their hope would be impacted by the tragedy that unfolded at the Covenant School. This recording was honestly the first chance they had to talk through the week…to process the loss and the grief and the moments of God’s goodness piercing through. Because, as the Uber driver they mentioned in the episode said, “We share the same hope.”

We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. It’s an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God where Jesus, running on ahead of us, has taken up his permanent post… Hebrews 6:18-20, MSG

David and Sissy share more helpful tips to care for the kids in your life that are dealing with big feelings after the Nashville school shooting. This content originated on the Raising Boys and Girls IG (@raisingboysandgirls) on Tuesday, March 28. We continue to pray that your conversations lead to hope and peace.

A Few Ideas on Helping Kids who are Hurting:

  1. Kids emotions are transient. Follow their lead.
  2. Have conversations in doses. Kids need to come up for air more than we do.
  3. Watch for: emotions bigger than the situation warrants, more clinging, tearfulness, regression, trouble sleeping.
  4. Maintain routines. Kids thrive in structure.
  5. Keep giving them space to feel. Process your feelings elsewhere.
  6. Move with them toward empathy and purpose.

It's unthinkable that we're recovering from another school shooting that took the lives of innocent children and adults. Child and adolescent counselor, Sissy Goff shares helpful ideas on how to talk with kids after a tragedy like this. This content originated on Sissy's IG (@sissygoff) on Monday, March 27 in the aftermath of the shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville, TN. We pray your conversations lead to hope and healing.

How to Talk to Your Kids After a School Shooting:

  1. Stay Calm
  2. Be the Source.
  3. Let them lead.
  4. Give them space to feel.
  5. It's okay to feel with them, not to process with them.
  6. Answer questions age-appropriately and honestly.
  7. Talk about what they can control.
  8. Look for the helpers. Be one.
  9. Ask what would help them feel safe at school.
  10. Don't feel like you have to have all the answers.
  11. Remind them of truth you know.

One of David and Sissy's favorite episodes to do quarterly is based on "What Kids Need Right Now". They talk so much about about how they are sitting with kids and families every day and hearing their hearts and hearing their struggles. And so it's important to get to talk about what they are seeing specifically. Join in on this conversation and hear the three things they are seeing the most right now with kids and learn about the practical ways we as caregivers can help them grow in these areas.
