WGWG.org is the official radio station on Gardner-Webb University. WGWG offers a wide range of programming with a variety of music, movie reviews, sporting events and community news and original content produced at the Boiling Springs, NC studios. WGWG began operations in 1961 as a radio club and transitioned into a 50,000 watt non-com FM station in 1974. WGWG began operating with an online stream at wgwg.org in 1998.

After a national search process, on March 27th, Gardner-Webb President Dr. William M. Downs has named one of its own, GWU Associate Coach Jeremy Luther as the head coach of the men’s basketball program.In his 11 seasons at GWU, Luther contributed a wealth of knowledge and played a vital part of the program’s 188 wins. Wigness offers an outlook of the season ahead, talks the transfer portal, chats about the Brinkley Softball Stadium and facility improvements, and explores the future of the Runnin’ Bulldogs.Wigness played at national power Arizona State University, three times earning All-Pac 12 honors and leading the Sun Devils to the 2011 National Championship. She finished her career with a spectacular .371 batting average, stole 40 bases and scored 130 runs. Wigness remains ranked among the program's all-time leaders in career batting average (8th) and stolen bases (11th). The Casa Grande, Ariz., native graduated from Arizona State with a degree in communications and political science. On Jan. 12th, Gardner-Webb President Dr. William M. Downs named Erik Solberg the next head coach of the GWU women’s soccer program. Solberg joins GWU after four seasons as the head coach at the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff (UAPB).During his tenure at UAPB, Solberg coached 12 all-conference players, including a SWAC Offensive Player of the Year (2022), Defensive Player of the Year (2023), and Freshman of the Year (2022), with eight SWAC Player of the Week recognitions. Solberg is the only head coach in UAPB history to lead his team to four consecutive SWAC Tournament appearances. Gardner-Webb University welcomed new Head Football Coach Cris Reisert on Thursday, Dec. 14. Students, student-athletes, faculty and staff were joined by alumni, the community and media for the event held in the GW Football Center at Spangler Stadium. On this episode of Dawg Tracks, Phil Constantino offers a meet and greet with Reisert. Reisert comes to GWU from Tiffin University (Ohio). At Tiffin, Reisert led his team to three GMAC championships (2019, 2020, 2023) and was named GMAC Coach of the Year in each of those championship seasons. This past season, his most successful team posted an 11-1 record, completing the regular season unbeaten before losing in the second round of the Division II national playoffs. With Reisert also handling offensive coordinator duties, the 2023 Tiffin Dragons finished ranked in the top 25 nationally in scoring offense (43.7 PPG, 6th), total offense (482.9 4th), scoring defense (16.2 PPG allowed, T-16th), and total defense (281.2 YPG allowed, 22nd).During his tenure at Tiffin, Reisert’s other notable accomplishments included the first two Division II playoff berths in school history (2019 and 2023), the highest national ranking in school history (No. 9), and the program’s first win over its primary rival (University of Findlay) in 22 years. In total, Reisert’s team defeated Findlay three times in five meetings. Tyrell Nelson made his mark as a Runnin’ Bulldog for four seasons on the Men’s Basketball squad. During that time, he scored nearly 1700 points over the course of 133 games, and averaged 12.5 points per game. His time at GW provided the foundation for the 2019 team that earned a spot in the NCAA tourney vs. eventual national champion Virginia. On October 28th, the Gardner-Webb University Brinkley Amphitheater hosts 15-Time Grammy Winner Ricky Skaggs as headliner for the inaugural concert for this new outdoor venue. Opening act for the show will be Gardner-Webb student Lindy Bryson, followed by North Carolina native, Will Jones.
Today on Webb Chat Episode 13, Bryson shares her love of music, and the journey from singing in church at the age of three, growing up on the Gardner-Webb campus, and winning the 2023 Don Gibson Singer Songwriter Symposium. Bryson will also offer thoughts about her songwriting craft, offer a couple of tunes, and chat about the anticipation of opening the Brinkley Amphitheater.

Donnie Thurman Jr. grew up knowing the Gardner-Webb University name. After all, he lived in the area and attended Crest High School. Yet, it wasn’t until a unique campus encounter that he felt the pull to become a Runnin’ Bulldog.

Scott Merritt is the new Gardner-Webb University Women’s Basketball head coach, and he’s our guest on this edition of Dawg Tracks. Merritt comes to GWU from the University of Wisconsin, where he has served as Associate Head Coach since 2021. He was a championship caliber player at Marquette, including making it to the 2003 Final Four. The Gardner-Webb Women's Basketball team have had a legendary season including a 16-0 start in Big South Conference play (a first in conference history), a regular season championship (the first since 2010), and three different 1,000-point career scorers on the same team (a first at GWU). Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths is a creative exploration of finding humanity within sometimes inhumane conditions of the physical and mental states. Today on Open Dialogue our guests are Daniel Giménez Cacho and Ximena Lamadrid. These two offer an inside look into the characters, creation and the story behind this Alejandro González Iñárritu project.
Bardo was released in theaters in Mexico on October 27 and launched in other countries on November 4. The movie will make its Netflix streaming debut on December 16.
The Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs earned the 2022 Big South Football Championship with a 38-17 win over North Carolina A&T to gain a birth into the 24-team FCS Playoffs for a chance at a national championship.

Melumad has collaborated with Oscar-winner Michael Giacchino on multiple projects, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thor: Love and Thunder. Additionally, Melumad has made contributions to the Star Trek universe in Star Trek: Prodigy and Strange New Worlds. Her varied and successful career has also seen her take on projects connected to video games, documentaries, and hip-hop music, such as Logic's certified platinum album Everybody, for which she composed orchestrations.

Jessie Aguglia is the guest on Dawg Tracks episode 2. GWU Golfer Zack Byers is the guest on episode 1 of Dawg Tracks hosted by Phil Constantino. Byers earned an individual automatic bid to the NCAA Golf Tournament by winning the Big South Conference Championship in late April.
His destination for the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals is Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., on May 16-18. The regional, hosted by Florida Atlantic University and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission will be played at the PGA National Resort. The 54-hole tournament features 14 teams and five individuals.
The top five teams from each of the six regional sites and the low scorer among individuals not on an advancing team will move on to the NCAA Championship round on May 27 at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Byers (Shelby, N.C. / Shelby HS) was dominant for Gardner-Webb this spring, winning three tournaments and posting four top-10 finishes. He was the lone Big South golfer to finish a tournament double digits under par (-10) and rounded out the year with the second-lowest stroke average of any golfer in the Big South. Byers was named first-team All-Big South Conference following the regular season.

He has contributed chapters to five books on North Carolina and the South. Rob Cannon (Battalion Chief, Public Information Officer for Charlotte Fire Department): Good afternoon. My name is Rob Cannon. I’m the Battalion Chief for the Charlotte Fire Department. Today is June 26, 2018. I’m here at Charlotte Fire Department headquarters and I’m with Dr. Ben Leslie of Gardner-Webb University. He and his team are here at headquarters today to announce a new program partnership between Charlotte Fire Department and Gardner-Webb University. Dr. Leslie, thank you for coming to headquarters today. Tell us a little about why you’re here.
Dr. Ben Leslie (GWU provost and executive vice president): Thank you, it’s my privilege to be here. We’ve just put signature to an agreement, which enables Gardner-Webb to enter into a partnership with the Charlotte Fire Department. We’re going to be assisting the fire department by providing some preparatory training for candidates who stand for the basic skills exam, which as I understand it, is the route which most firemen take as they become firemen for the Charlotte Fire Department.
What we want to do is to help improve the success rate on that skills exam and provide the fire department with a larger pool of candidates. We hope to improve diversity in the process and help develop a stronger pool of candidates for fire services. At Gardner-Webb, this is a new venture for us—one that we are very excited about. We’re no strangers to public service. Gardner-Webb has a long history of providing schoolteachers for our public schools, nurses and physician assistants for the healthcare industry, and law enforcement officers in the criminal justice area. So we are excited about entering into a partnership in the fire service area.
Rob Cannon: Right. And for those of you who may be listening to this interview, on the website CharlotteFire.org under the Employment Opportunities tab, there is a link where interested parties can sign up for the open house that will be the entry point for this program. So you can find more information there. While we are here, I understand that a new fire program will be starting at Gardner-Webb. Can you tell us a little about that?
Dr. Ben Leslie: Absolutely. We are awaiting final approval from our accrediting agency—which is part of the process that all programs have to go through. We hope to receive that [approval] soon. The program is a Bachelor of Science in Fire Services Administration. It is intended as a partnership program with North Carolina Community Colleges—many of which also have a fire services associate’s degree. This will be an opportunity for graduates of those programs to enter seamlessly into a program that leads to a bachelor’s degree in the same area. We think that will be a good opportunity for training leadership in fire service positions not just in Charlotte but throughout the state.
Rob Cannon: Right. So it’s going to be another good opportunity coming for firefighters to increase their professionalism and their academic credentials. We’ll look forward to that and stay plugged in with Gardner-Webb to learn more as that comes down the line.

A native of Charleston, S.C., Platt graduated from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tenn.
Platt is an ordained minister, an officer with The Salvation Army, and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He currently serves as the director of personnel at Evangeline Booth College in Atlanta, Ga.
