Today we are speaking with Karen Oldman and Julie Ryan from Neighbourhood Decision Making. Neighbourhood Decision Making is a program in which Londoners are able to come up with ideas to improve their local communities. You are able to submit your ideas and get your community to vote on which ideas you all want to see come to life. Because you know what is needed in your neighbourhood better than anyone.

Submissions close on September 21st. This part is about submitting your ideas. We want to encourage our listeners to submit their ideas for your neighbourhood before the submissions close. In part 2 we will showcase the ideas that are up for a vote in each neighbourhood so you know what you are able to vote for and also, how to go about doing that. Remember to rate and subscribe and all those fun things and follow us on social media to know when part 2 is out!

In this episode, we talk with Karen Oldman who is the manager of this program. We speak with her about how this program was started, how it has a positive impact on the community, the types of ideas that are already being submitted for 2021, the most popular ideas that have won in the past and more. We also have Julie Ryan on. Julie’s idea - the murals under the Richmond Street underpass - was a previous winner of the Neighbourhood Decision Making Program. Alecia Bryan and Harina Mokanan are the visionaries and creators behind this group. We were able to discuss with them all about seeing the need for a space for BIPOC in London to get together and share stories and have fun, in a place that they feel seen and heard and not looked at as the minority in that space - and PLUMP was born!

PLUMP also is known for their program “The Exchange” -a multi-media sharing circle where each month they choose a topic and a medium (such as music or film) for community members who are interested in connecting, who wish to explore and be exposed to new and old works of creative arts while discussing the universal themes of human nature.

We discuss these programs and so much more in this episode of London’s Pretty Cool.

Yessica Woahneil is a notable musician here in London. While playing majority folk music, being invited to the Ontario Folk Alliance, she recently has been trying something new. Feeding off completing the ‘riff a day’ challenge in which she either created a new riff or learned a cover each day, Yessica has released a collection called “music to bite your nails and spit them out to”.

You may have seen Yessica before as she has performed at home county folk festival, JunoFest and Grickle Grass. She has also gone on tour to the UK with fellow (former-Londoner) musician Megan Arnold.

Esther’s Family is the musical embodiment of ugly sweaters and awkward photos. Boasting high energy shows, catchy songs and quirky personalities, this folk collective primarily plays indie-folk music. However, they’ve been known to break out the odd 80s dance hit from time to time.

After only a short period of performing, the group has already received high praise for their work, being awarded Fanshawe’s Music Industry Arts “Artist of The Year” and winning the Youth Discoveries “Road To Summerfolk” contest, both in 2018.

Live performances are where the group hit their stride, calling on audience participation and filling the space between songs with an awkward, yet lovable, sense of humour.

With several releases planned for 2020 and many upcoming shows, you won’t want to miss Esther’s Family. Whether you’re streaming them online or singing along at a show, you’re more than just a listener, you’re part of the family!
