NFL Wild Card Weekend Preview
Fittingly, an unprecedented 2020 NFL season remained unsettled until the 256th and final regular-season game. Washington's win on Sunday night clinched the NFC East division title (with a losing record, no less) and locked in the 2020 playoff field.
The league expanded its postseason to 14 teams this season, meaning only the No. 1 seeds -- the Chiefs in the AFC and the Packers in the NFC -- will get first-round byes. The other 12 teams will compete in a six-game wild-card weekend that opens in just six days.

EPISODE 94 Overview
NFL Week 13 Records Broken
In this week's episode Steve put together the best stats and records from Sunday's slate of NFL games. From Davante Adams, Aaron Rodgers, Travis Kelce, Darren Waller to Justin Jefferson, and Baker Mayfield.
Lots of numbers and broken records in Week 13 is all you need to know for now.
NBA Load Management
He also talks about the new NBA policy about "REST". The never-ending debate about load management and resting players continued Monday, thanks to a new policy implemented by the NBA. This season, teams will be fined at least $100,000 if they are found to be resting healthy players for nationally televised games, according to Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes.

After two weeks, Steve is back with some interesting number breakdowns as to why the Bucks traded for Jrue Holiday, how it impacts Giannis supermax contract. Also, David Griffin and Sam Presti should be getting GMs of the century awards, if such a thing exist.
And we also break down what each trade thus far means for the Eastern and Western Conference teams.
For anyone who thought the Golden State Warriors were finally free of the long and sleepless nights, anxiety, angst and all other psychological demons that are byproducts of a miserable season, please reconsider, because thereâs one more remnant from that rubble they must deal with.
Which is: How do they handle the reward for surviving that?

In this iteration of the StatMan Sports Podcast we explore the idea or question rather of whether the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the right decision of signing Antonio Browns. Do they really need him?
We then follow up on Steve's Super Bowl contenders thus far; their biggest strengths and weaknesses headed into the rest of the season.
Segment One:
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers might be the best team in the NFL, and that includes the Kansas City Chiefs, undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers or anybody else.
The Buccaneers have the highest point differential in the NFL, at plus-80. The Buccaneers ranked first in Football Outsidersâ DVOA after six weeks, by a large margin. They have a very good offense and the defense is even better.
And now theyâre bringing in the most toxic player in the NFL, one who has been a problem for three teams and is likely to make it a fourth.
Segment Two:
Sports commentators with hot takes like to believe there's a clear dichotomy between Super Bowl contenders and pretenders. In reality, it doesn't work that way. Every team in the NFL has its strengths and weaknesses, and there are a number of teams that could win the Super Bowl every year.
Who has the best odds? Tampa? Green Bay? Kansas City?

NBA GOAT DEBATE
LeBron James has earned his fourth NBA championship and fourth Finals MVP, closing the gap on the ring total of all-time great Michael Jordan. As LeBron's legacy continues to grow, the debate of who is the GREATEST player in league history becomes closer than ever before.
Few questions have engaged the world of sports as much as the question about the best or greatest sportsman of all time. Often the acronym GOAT â Greatest Of All Time â is attributed to someone who is the greatest at a certain skill. But often the word âbestâ or âbest of all timeâ is mixed into the discussion and then it gets complicated.
The first question to ask is about the difference between âgreatestâ and âbestâ. Doesnât it mean the same thing?
First of all, greatness is a measure of the merits and achievements over a complete career while âbestâ is a perishable that has to be related to a certain time period.

In today's episode, we preview and breakdown the 2020 NBA Finals matchup between the 5th seed Miami Heat v.s. the 1st seed Los Angeles Lakers. Both teams had a particularly "easy" path to the NBA Finals nevertheless they were the best two teams in the NBA Bubble Post-season with both having a 12-3 record.
The coincidence of this series is quite delicious and will own the intrigue and conversation until the ball goes up Wednesday in Game 1. LeBron James will be playing against the team he helped win a pair of championships. This scenario will get heavy airplay in the build-up, as it should; LeBron was a solid favorite to return to the championship round once the Lakers got Anthony Davis, while the Heat make for a surprise guest. The Lakers bring a pair of All-NBA first-team members while Miami hasnât had anyone on that level since
We break down all things Miami/LA this episode.
Three things to watch
Number to know
40.7 -- The Lakers have averaged 40.7 points per game in the restricted area in the playoffs. That's down from a league-high 44.1 in the regular season, but still 7.5 more than any other team has averaged in the postseason.
By wide margins, the Lakers rank first in both field goal percentage in the restricted area (70.9%) and the percentage of their shots that have come in the restricted area (34%). LeBron James is responsible for almost half (48%) of their 610 restricted area points via his own buckets (87) and assists (59).
The Lakers have shot better from outside the paint in the playoffs (37.7%, effective field goal percentage of 50.4%) than they did in the regular season (35.5%, 47.7%). But protecting the rim remains extra critical in regard to slowing down the offense that ranked No. 1 in each of the last two rounds (114.4 points scored per 100 possessions in the conference semis, 117.8 per 100 in the conference finals).
That's why we may see a lot more 2-3 zone from the Heat in The Finals. The Lakers scored 39 points on 35 possessions against Miami's zone in the regular season and offer a different look than Boston with their two-big lineups. Though the Celtics got a lot more comfortable against the zone late in the last round, the Heat stuck with it, and it was critical in their fourth-quarter comeback in Game 6.
Most importantly, while open jumpers can be found against it with proper execution, the zone keeps Bam Adebayo near the basket a lot more than the Heat's man-to-man defense. Against this particular opponent, allowing open jumpers is far more preferable than allowing shots at the rim

The first chapter in the book of Luka Doncic Legend was written on a Sunday afternoon, when Doncic capped off an all-time playoff performance with an overtime buzzer-beating triple to tie the Mavericksâ first-round series with the Los Angeles Clippers at two games apiece.
Doncic took the shot defenses want him to take at this time in his short NBA career, a leaning, step-back three. But moments often transcend numbers, and sometimes it takes only a sliver of daylight to turn a ho-hum, go-home-in-five series into a dogfight.
Even more than putting a scare into the favored Clippers, Doncic has put the NBA on notice: This feels like Tigerâs âHello worldâ or Jordan at the Boston Garden in 1986, a moment when you know something special is on the way.
Doncicâs historic performance puts him in a room entered only by Oscar Robertson and Charles Barkley â at least 40 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in a playoff game â with a jaw-dropping 43-point, 17-rebound, 13-assist showing â all while being a game-time decision on a sprained ankle he sustained in Game 3.

NBA Playoffs is in Good Hands (NBA Bubble Edition)
After Day 1 of the NBA Playoffs we can say with certainty that the NBA is in good hands. Its future is bright with young stars like Luka Doncic becoming the first player ever in NBA history with 40 point in his debut.
Donovan Mitchell scoring 57 points (3rd most all-time) despite a loss against the Nuggets, Jamaal Murray scoring 20 points in the 4th quarter + OT. Fred Van Vleet being the first Raptor in history to have a 30 point/10 assist game.
That is just the introduction of many other records that were set by individuals and collective teams on Day 1.
We explored all 4 games, project future outcomes and give a look into the mindset for teams on Day 2.

After a week hiatus, I am back to give you my NBA Power Rankings Top 10 NBA teams going into the NBA Bubble playoffs. I also share a not no nice experience on Twitter with another fellow tweeter, and I round it off with Damian Lillard taking Skip Bayless soul in a Monday afternoon tweet.
NBA Power RankingsIt was impossible to predict what would happen during the season restart after 4 1/2 months off. But even expecting the unexpected, we have to be surprised by the performances of some teams in Orlando.
The title favorites have seemingly had a tough time adjusting. The Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers are a combined 7-10. The Lakers have had the worst offense in the restart, and the Bucks ranking 11th defensively over the last 11 days may be more shocking than that. Both Milwaukee and the Clippers lost to the Brooklyn Nets last week.
The Phoenix Suns probably shouldn't have been invited to the restart. But they were, they have their first five-game winning streak in 5 1/2 years, and they're still very much alive in the chase for eighth and ninth place in the Western Conference. The San Antonio Spurs went to Orlando to develop their young players and they've found themselves in the middle of that same chase.
Two playoff series in the East are set. The No. 1 seed Bucks will face the No. 8 seed Orlando Magic, while the No. 2 seed and defending-champion Toronto Raptors will face Brooklyn, the 7 seed. We also know that the Boston Celtics are the No. 3 seed in the East, while the Lakers are No. 1 in the West.
Everything else will be determined in the next seven days, with the Western Conference play-in series taking place on Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday.
With the top teams all stumbling, there's no obvious No. 1 in this week's rankings. Fortunately, this isn't college football or basketball, and the rankings don't really matter.
Feel free to disagree.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is the 2020 MVP and DPOY. In today's episode we will study this in depth and make the clear as to why he will win both awards by a wide margin. We also covered Alyssa Nakken becoming the first female coach in major league history, and the NBA setting a date for the season award votes.
Overview: Giannis case for MVP and DPOY
He's the best player on the league's best team and having a ridiculously dominant season at both ends of the floor.
Another season, another opportunity for Giannis Antetokounmpo to simultaneously contend for the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards.
Seriously, the extent of his dominance is getting out of hand. Somewhat buried beneath James Harden's historic scoring eruption is Antetokounmpo's own nightly salvos. He's averaging over 30 points...in barely 31 minutes per game.

Today we come to the end of the 10-part documentary of The Last Dance with EP09 and EP10 where we see "The Shot" but prior to it, we see one of the greatest sequences in sports history, the Pizza Game and the CVS hit list BUT not before we answer the question of the series.
It took almost 10 hours to get to the question. âWas it satisfying to leave at your peak?â Michael Jordan is asked in the final minutes of ESPNâs The Last Dance, âOr was it maddening?â The 10-part documentary ends right before Jordan announces his second retirement from the Bulls.
Highlight of the Episode: Jordanâs Final Minute As a Chicago Bull (The Shot)Jordan won the regular-season MVP award, the All-Star MVP, the Finals MVP, and a third straight title the year he left the league. And in Game 6, in the last minute of the last playoff game of his last title, Jordan delivered the best sequence of his career.
The Flu GameIt turns out, one of the most iconic Jordanisms is a lie. It wasnât the flu that Jordan overcame for 38 points and a win in Game 5 of the â97 Finalsâit was food poisoning.

This week we continue exploring "The Last Dance" Episode 07 and 08 where we get Crying MJ, his leadership come into question, his baseball stint, the motivation after Michael's dad past away, the "Double Nickel" game, and ultimately the 72-10 Chicago Bulls run.
Sundayâs installments of ESPNâs The Last Dance showed the rude, the bad, and the ugly sides of Michael Jordan. And the happy, the sad, the devastated. During the two hours of episodes 7 and 8, we see Jordan endlessly berate his teammates; sob in the locker room after winning the 1996 NBA Finals on Fatherâs Day, three years after his dad was murdered; and punch Steve Kerr in the face after antagonizing him in practice.
You sympathize with Jordan. You dislike him. You admire him. He is, to use the cop-out of all cop-out clichĂŠs, a complicated man. The Last Dance was produced because Jordan approved the use of exclusive footage, and though most filmmakers try to avoid it, documentaries alwaysâsometimes explicitly, sometimes subtlyâend up taking sides.
But our attention quickly turns to Jordan and the Bulls winning another title in â96. We remember that Jordan is the ultimate champion, despite the outbursts, and one sentiment sticks more than the other. This is how it goes with problematic athletes. Greatness overshadows nastiness. The Last Dance conveys the height of both with Jordan.

In last week's episode we highlighted MJ's first championship and how Phil Jackson played a big role into all of this. This week we explore the main key highlights especially Michael Jordan's grievances off the court, his gambling/competitive sides and how it affected him mentally during the infamous 1993 playoffs series v.s the Knicks.
No one ever brings up how exhausting it was to be Michael Jordan. It doesnât fit the narrative. He could outshoot you, outhustle you, melt your defense, and stop you on the other end. He was a two-way player who gave it his all, and his all, of all the alls, trumped everyone elseâs. His reputation isnât all roses and rings. Jordan wasâis?âkind of an asshole.
That much is known, even championed. He gambles. A lot. Maybe too much. Definitely in the millions, but thatâs not my money nor my card game. He broke many hearts when he said âRepublicans buy sneakers, too.â Those actions suggest heâs inconsiderate, destructive, or self-centered. But none of them indicate exhaustion. Exhaustion is something else. Exhaustion is not a character flaw; itâs a sign of weakness. And thereâs no mention of weakness in the Michael Jordan story.
But Jordan was tired.
At the end of the sixth episode, MJ is shown in the car with his friend, NBC broadcaster Ahmad Rashad. Itâs April 1998, one week before the playoffs are about to begin, and the discussion around whether Jordan will really leave the game (again) is all anyone can talk about. Jordan drives out of his estate as iron gates with the number â23â on each side split open to let the two through. âI want to leave two years before my skills tell me I canât play this game,â Jordan tells Rashad. âI donât want to miss my time to go.â
Sundayâs episodes show the Bulls starâs frustration and fatigue, along with a handful of other iconic Jordan basketball storiesâthe kind that do fit in to his legend.
Episodes 07 and Episode 08 debut next Sunday.

As we did last week, we continued with the The Last Dance documentary review. This time we break down Episode Three and Episode Four with a long time friend Mario Broussard who is a co-host himself on another TV show called Let's Pray .
The focus in the latest two episodes were about Phil Jackson, Dennis Rodman, and how they came together in order to facilitate the 1997-1998 Chicago Bulls championship run.
Before Rodman and Jordan shared a court, they were opponents: Rodman was a member of the Detroit Pistons, the hard playing bad boys who kept the Bulls from advancing to the NBA finals for several years.
Episodes three and four of âThe Last Danceâ focused heavily on the rivalry between the Bulls and the Pistons, flashing way back to the days before Jordan won his first title. That rivalry between the Bulls and Pistons hasnât cooled over the decades.
Jordan began weight training after that 1990 loss, building up his body to better survive the scrum that he knew was going to come in the postseason when the two teams would meet again. For the 1990-91 season, things were different. The Bulls took down Detroit in four straight games, sweeping their longtime nemesis. In that final game, with time still left on the clock, most of the Detroit stars simply walked off the court, not shaking hands with Jordan and his Bulls.
Detroit star Isiah Thomas tried to explain the behavior in the documentary, saying thatâs how things were done in those days. Jordan is asked to watch Thomas explain himselfâbut he remains visibly upset by the move.
âYou can show me anything you want,â he says. âThereâs no way you canât convince me he wasnât an asshole.â
The fire still burns strong, nearly 29 years later.
The show ends with Jordanâs first title, won against Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers. The clips of Jordan in his prime are amazing, stunning, a reminder of how great this man was when he was king of the court.
Episodes 5 and 6 debut next Sunday.

Everyone in âThe Last Danceâ has a Michael Story. Maybe itâs one theyâve told enough times at dinner parties or family gatherings that the timing has been workshopped to perfection. In some cases, the story might have drifted so far from the truth that it exists as its own self-perpetuating myth. Over the course of 10 episodes of âThe Last Dance,â the ESPN documentary series examining the singular stardom of Michael Jordan through the lens of the legendary Chicago Bulls 1997-98 title run, the breadth of subjects and timelines almost makes the veracity of those stories irrelevant.
Directed by Jason Hehir, whose previous projects include multiple editions of ESPNâs long-running â30 for 30â series, âThe Last Danceâ is less an investigation of a sports dynastyâs last flames and more the chronicle of how improbable its survival always was. The goal seems to be to make a definitive account of what that season meant for all involved, regardless of how some of the empirical facts may have changed in the two decades since.
Structurally, âThe Last Danceâ is a marvel, finding thematic parallels between the drama unfolding in the âpresentâ of that â97-â98 season and the foundational framework that made that final Finals run possible. Out of a swirling mess of personnel moves, family tragedies, and international showcases, Hehir and a team of editors â led by Chad Beck, Devin Concannon, Abhay Sofsky, and Ben Sozanski â manage to craft a smooth, coherent pair of forward-moving tracks. âThe Last Danceâ shows how, by the fall of 1997, the Bulls had already cemented themselves as basketball royalty, amassing a trophy case filled with championships and individual accolades. The promise of one more ring takes on a mythic quality nonetheless. Even if some flashbacks do leave the Last Dance seasonâs action at a tantalizing crossroads, thereâs never a sense of whiplash as the narrative seesaws across the years.

Did Michael Jordan deserve all the credit he got? The quick answer is YES! I give you an introduction into what to expect from the documentary coming up!
The Chicago Bulls suspected the 1997-98 season would be their last run together.
For all the championships and success with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Phil Jackson, there was a feeling among many in the organization that the good times had run their course.
That season is captured in "The Last Dance," a 10-part documentary series debuting Sunday, April 19th (9 p.m. ET on ESPN and the ESPN App). Heading into the premiere of Episodes 1 and 2, here's a quick guide with everything you need to know about that Bulls team before the final season for one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history.

Sometimes in the NBA award landscape, there is simply no need for debate. When one preeminent superstar soars above his contemporaries in such a convincing manner, those covering the league arenât required to spend March and April fabricating a close battle.
Looking back to 2016, the only argument worth having was determining second-place. Stephen Curry completed an unprecedented season, winning 89.9% of the games he appeared in (71-8) while averaging 30 points and joining the 50-40-90 club. It led to the first unanimous decision. This was after Curry already breezed through the 2014-15 season, capturing his first MVP in another blowout vote.
Overall, the outside perception of a close race hasnât mattered in the end. There is usually one candidate that separates himself, whether thatâs in January or during a late-season push.
Since the voting process is on a points-based system, with fewer points awarded to those who finish lower on the five-player ballot, the results rarely indicate a close competition. Over the last six seasons, the average proportion of first-place votes landed by the MVP winner has been 84.3%, with the lowest being Westbrookâs 2017 victory â which was still a meaningful margin. The average gap in total points between first and second place has been 301, with the smallest being the 2017 race (135).
Whether itâs because of Giannis Antetokounmpoâs location in a small-market, LeBronâs longevity, or the slightly stronger Western Conference, this strange idea of the 2020 MVP being a âtough choiceâ has surfaced and I find it laughable.
Like I said in the initial statement; however you want to view this, Giannis is the runaway winner BUT...
Things we can do to fix the NBA MVP voting system

I've watched A LOT of sports and sometimes certain things just line up just perfectly. Sports has a weird way of aligning things that makes use wonder whether it was suppose to happen like that.
Many athletes, teammates, coaches, and friends talked at Kobe and Gianna's Memorial. They shared their intimate moments, pain, joys and laughters. We all laughed, cried and left there with some sense of healing.
That's the main topic today but

Since the NBA introduced the three-point field goal in the 1979â80 season, the 50â40â90 shooting threshold has been reached by eight players:
Then there is Damian Lillard. He's the first player in NBA history to average at least 40 points per game with 50/50/90 shooting splits over a 10-game span. Put some respect on this man's name!

As "Nuke" LaLoosh said in Bull Durham, "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains."
That movie will never go out of style.
After another fascinating weekend of NFL action ... Kyle Shanahan is a genius. The Vikings never had a chance. The best team from the regular season has abruptly entered its offseason. And Russell Wilson put on a show but couldn't get a win, Aaron Rodgers is still a BAAAADDD MANNNN.
You can't make this stuff up. Or -- considering it's Bill O'Brien, after all -- maybe you can. At 21-0, I understood the field goal to make it 24-0, even if I personally would've had Deshaun Watson go for the jugular on fourth-and-1. O'Brien's safe decision at least made some sense, whether you agreed with it or not. But running a fake punt on fourth-and-4 at your own 31-yard line while leading 24-7? That's indefensible, clueless, season/soul-crushing. Unfortunately, this is exactly the kind of thing we've become accustomed to seeing from the Texans' head coach.

Over the course of two days, the N.F.L. saw its playoff field upended, with the No. 3 seed in both conferences being sent home by the No. 6 seeds, while each game was decided by a single score. It was a wild-card weekend that delivered on its name, and it set up a divisional round for next weekend that looks far different than most people predicted.
The 32 things I learned from wild-card weekend of the 2019 NFL playoffs:
1.The NFL's 100th season rolled on in style with a compelling quartet of games kicking off the postseason. But despite two overtime thrillers, the apparent demise of a dynasty and a shocking upset in New Orleans ... just a reminder â the last team to reach (and win) the Super Bowl after playing in the wild-card round was the 2012 Baltimore Ravens.
1a. The last time a wild-card matchup went into overtime prior to this weekend? Tim Tebow ... 2011.
1b. The road teams went 3-1 with both sixth seeds prevailing â which hadn't happened since ... last year.
2. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is now 5-0 against the Eagles. Never a doubt.
2a. Of course, it helps Philadelphia has averaged 11.4 points in those five losses.
3. The injury bug finally dealt the Eagles a fatal sting, QB Carson Wentz sidelined by a blow to the head in the first quarter of a playoff debut he'd long anticipated. Tough luck â or dirty play, depending on how you feel about Jadeveon Clowney's game-changing hit â for a player who had virtually willed Philadelphia to the NFC East crown in December.

Welcome to a new decade and the new year 2020! We want to start of the year right with the breakdown of the 2020 NFL Wild Card Weekend Breakdown and Predictions.
This won't be your typical breakdown but more of a detailed evaluation of every playoff team THIS weekend; their strengths and weaknesses will be put on display and my job with the help of Pro Football Focus and Next Gen Stats, is to help you understand the numbers and how they will impact each matchup and what to look forward to.
The best part about projecting playoff games is that teams have to win to advance, meaning each club should maximize all 60 minutes of play in every game.

Hot Take
It is hard to go against Tom Brady and Joe Montana as the two best quarterbacks to ever take a snap. Brady is part of a dynasty that we will never see again in any sport. The Patriots have won six Super Bowls with Brady and head coach Bill Belichick. Montana is highly regarded as the best Super Bowl performer ever. He has a record of 4-0 in Super Bowls and holds records for the highest passer rating (127.8) and most pass attempts without an interception (122). Montana was also the first quarterback to win the Super Bowl MVP award three times.
From there, Manning is a safe pick for the No. 3 spot on the list. Manning held the passing touchdowns and yards record until Brees overtook him. He added a second Super Bowl ring in his final season to go along with five MVP awards. Manning is considered the best regular-season quarterback ever as he was a Pro Bowl player 14 times and named a First-Team All-Pro member seven times.
After the top three, the list gets a little tricky. Dan Marino was one of the best passers ever but he was never able to capture a Super Bowl victory. Marino played in a different era and tore it up when throwing the football was much more difficult than it is today. It is unfair to criticize players based on their era because nothing is guaranteed. We do not know for sure how Brady or Brees would have fared in the 1980s. Johnny Unitas and Bart Starr were ahead of their time, which earns them great respect. Then there is John Elway who was one of the best prospects coming out of college ever and backed it up with two championships.

For the Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic is on a historic pace only matched by Michael Jordan and Oscar Robertson, while Jason Garrett is on a NFL pace only matched by a bad relationship with your girlfriend!
Show Notes:
NFL Research offers the best nuggets from each week of games in the NFL. Here are the most eye-popping statistical accomplishments of Week 12.
1) Frank Gore had 65 rushing yards in Sunday's win over the Broncos, bringing him to 15,289 career rushing yards. He passed Hall of Famer Barry Sanders (15,269) to move into third all-time in rush yards. Next up is Hall of Famer Walter Payton (16,726).
2) Michael Thomas joined Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison (2002) as the only players with at least 100 receptions in their team's first 11 games of a season in the Super Bowl era. Thomas' 10 receptions in the Saints' win over the Panthers brought him to 104 receptions this season.
3) With 50 receiving yards in the Buccaneers' win over the Falcons, Mike Evans topped 1,000 receiving yards this season (1,043). He joined Hall of Famer Randy Moss as the only players in NFL history with at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of their first six seasons.
4) The Patriots have at least 10 wins for the 17th straight season (2003-2019), the most consecutive 10-win seasons in NFL history. The Patriots' win over the Cowboys helped them break a tie with the 49ers (1983-1998).
5) Russell Wilson is the only quarterback in NFL history who has led his team to a winning season in each of his first eight seasons (2012-2019). The Seahawks are 9-2 after Sunday's win over the Eagles.
6) Ryan Tannehill's passer rating as starting quarterback (114.9) ranks first among 34 quarterbacks with at least five starts in 2019 (Kirk Cousins is second with a 114.8 passer rating). Tannehill's passer rating is 23.2 points higher than Marcus Mariota's (91.7) passer rating this season.
7) With one rushing touchdown and one receiving TD, Christian McCaffrey joined Chuck Foreman (1973-1975) as the only players in NFL history with at least 20 rushing TDs and at least 15 receiving TDs through their first three seasons. McCaffrey has 21 rushing TDs a

Is Lamar Jackson the new and improved Michael Vick?
Injuries derailing the season of a team or individual is nothing new. So far this season, it's been hand injuries - those of Stephen Curry, Kyle Lowry and Gordon Hayward - that have been the most significant, though the Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics should be able to stay afloat in the Eastern Conference more than the Golden State Warriors have been able to do in the West.
What's new is the 25-game suspensions - those of Wilson Chandler and especially DeAndre Ayton and John Collins - that have seemingly come out of nowhere to take a player away for nearly a third of the season. This should have been a big year of development for both Ayton and Collins, and maybe it still could be. But losing 25 games to an off-the-floor mistake is a significant setback for two of the league's most promising young big men.
Dion Waiters' 10-game team suspension is another story, not that significant in regard to the standings, but still a setback for a guy who has played just 120 games in his three-plus seasons in Miami.

NFL Research offers the best nuggets from each week of games in the NFL. In today's episode, I changed the pace and went over some statistics for Week *8. Also for the NBA, I had a few takes and remarks to Week 1.
P.S Can someone tell LeBron James to let his hairline go?!!!Are the Warriors really this bad and the Suns really this* good?
The first week of the 2019-20 season certainly didn't contradict the notion that there were more unknowns than usual across the league. And while Phoenix (with their win over the Clippers on Saturday) is the best story so far, it's hard not to focus on the teams that are off to alarming starts: Golden State, Indiana and Sacramento.
Of course, Week 2 provides the first opportunity for those teams to get things moving in the right direction. And maybe it will provide more clarity in regard to who's the best team in the league. With the Bucks and Clippers both losing on Saturday, with the 2-0 Nuggets needing overtime to beat the Suns at home on Friday, and with the 2-0 Sixers needing a second-half comeback to Blake-Griffin-less Pistons, none of the early favorites are off to a dominant start.

The NBA lost the plot last season and I have 20 burning questions for this upcoming NBA Season. The show became more important than the game, to the point where the very superstars that created the social media frenzy supposedly powering interest in the league balked when interest in their futures inevitably overshadowed their actual work product. It was uncomfortable watching Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and many others come to the same realization Truman Burbank did when he realized his entire life was being broadcasted to billions of consumers and he had little choice but to play along.
That better not happen again this year. A whirlwind free agency left the title chase wide open and created an on-court product that even the most inept salesperson should have no trouble promoting. If the NBA canât find a way to make actual basketball compelling to the masses this year, we have a serious problem. Thereâs no superstar free agent drama on the horizon to distract us, nor is there any dominant-yet-stale superteam there to turn the regular season into something between a complete waste of time and a weighty existential dilemma. This season should be all about the basketball, and thatâs ultimately why we devote so much of our time to following this silly league.
In that spirit, Iâve crafted 20 burning basketball questions that will decide the leagueâs trajectory this season. You wonât see anything about trade targets on this list, and this is also a Giannis Antetokunmpo speculation-free zone. Instead, these are 20 questions that directly pertain to what happens on the actual basketball court. I canât wait to find out the answers.

A couple of weeks before the start of the 2019-20 NBA regular season, the league finds itself involved in a controversy with China stemming from a now-deleted tweet from Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey. In the tweet, Morey gave a message of support to protesters in Hong Kong who are currently involved in demonstrations that began in opposition to controversial proposed legislation.
Morey's tweet was met with considerable backlash from Chinese authorities, while several different parties, including NBA commissioner Adam Silver, have weighed in on the issue. The latest to add his voice to the conversation is none other than LeBron James. The timeline of events has been lengthy. Below is a rundown of how we got from Morey's tweet to the current situation between China and the NBA along with the latest on this constantly evolving situation.
Then this mess with the NFL; We are being reminded on Every Given Sunday, and most recently on Any Given Monday night, that someone needs to throw the flag on officiating in the NFL before the public trust is destroyed.
No one, least of all the zebras, seems to know what pass interference is anymore, and we watched the Lions get robbed in Green Bay because the men in stripes twice called hands to the face penalties against DE Trey Flowers when a national television audience could see, with or without replay, how blatantly wrong they were. And there were other calls that screwed the Lions.
To err is human, but never have NFL officials appeared this human.
Advances in technology over the years have upped the urgency to get the calls right, yet coachâs pass interference challenges are ignored even when the call begs to be overturned. Clear and obvious visual evidence has apparently not been clear and obvious to the officials. Or to senior VP of officiating Al Riveron, who from his New York command center persists in subscribing to the nothing-to-see-here theory.

In this week's episode Steve talks about the Dallas Cowboys pretentious ways against good teams but puff out their chest vs the bad teams. Same as the Cleveland Browns. The theme this week is all about being cautious and WHY IT MATTERS THAT sports America does not care about pretenders.
Don't claim to be one thing and then your actions say another. The numbers will sniff you out but here is the summary:
Packers 4-1, first place in the NFC North. Cowboys 3-2, saddled with a two-game losing streak, tied for first in the NFC East with Philadelphia, and just one game ahead of the Giants.
This the result of insisting on shooting themselves in the foot, too, beginning last Sunday in New Orleans, losing two fumbles while crossing the 50-yard line, settling for a field goal after sitting first-and-10 at the New Orleansâ 11-yard line thanks in part to Dak Prescott missing a throw to an open Randall Cobb in the end zone and then Dak missing a third-down throw to Cobb while on the move. And that doesnât even account for Brett Maher missing on a 55-yard field-goal attempt.
Oh, not to mention rushing for just 45 yards.
Result: Two-point loss, 12-10, on the road.
Now this, turning the ball over another three times, ruining what could very well have been a celebration of finally beating the Packers at home for the first time since 2007, the Cowboys now oh for their last four tries, and stretching this dry spell against the Packers over these past two decades, losing eight of the last nine meetings.
Browns @ 49ers (by the numbers)
185 - 49ers rushing yards in the first half, 83 of which came on San Franciscoâs first offensive play of the game. The Browns allowed just 173 the entire game the previous week against the Ravens, who came into the game leading the league in rushing.
6.9 - Led by Matt Breida (114) and Tevin Coleman (97), the 49ers averaged 6.9 yards per rush, finishing with 275 yards on 40 attempts.
180 - One week after posting 530 yards against the Ravens, the Browns mustered just 180 on Monday, good for an average of 3.9 yards per play.
21 - Mondayâs game marked the first time Cleveland was held without a touchdown since the teamâs Week 16 loss to Chicago on Dec. 24, 2017 -- a 21-game stretch.
1 - The Browns had just one first down during the entire second half. The 49ers possessed the ball for 23:54 of the final 30 minutes.
8 - Under duress all night, Baker Mayfield officially took eight hits, four of which were counted as sacks.
4 - Turnovers committed by the Browns, their most of the season. Cleveland fumbled twice and Mayfield was intercepted twice -- including once on the goal line after a potential touchdown was bobbled by Antonio Callaway.
8 - Clevelandâs lone points came on Austin Seibertâs 30-yard field goal, his eighth make on as many tries this season.
7 - Myles Garrett collected his seventh sack of the season during Mondayâs second quarter, dropping Jimmy Garoppolo on third down to force a punt.
87 - Nick Chubb followed up his record-setting day in Baltimore with 87 yards on 16 carries, the bulk of which came in the first half.

Goal setting is essential to living a life with purpose and meaning. Goals give our lives direction and focus, and help us stay motivated over the long term.
Nearly everything in life revolves around goals -- they encompass all of our plans for the future, all of our hopes, dreams and visions for what we want in life. And yet we often fail to reach our goals. Thatâs because weâre all human and can be easily distracted.
So what does it take to achieve a goal and see it become reality?

Pro football can look past allegations of predatory behavior toward women, but making the NFL look bad is a different story and you will look like a Clown Show.
The demise of Brownâs career has been stunningly swift. Hereâs a brief synopsis of his past two weeks: Heâs been accused of rape and sexual misconduct by two women. Heâs been released by two teams, the Raiders and the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Heâs cost himself countless millions in salary and endorsements, with Nike dropping him and the Raiders voiding his $30 million contract. Whether the Patriots will ever pay him the $9 million he was guaranteed for this season is very much in doubt. Then, on Sunday, Brown all but retired, writing on Twitter that he wouldnât play in the National Football League as long as owners could void contracts whenever they wanted.

Is a switching of the guard happening in the NFL right in front our eyes? Recent sagas involving Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown might have been clues. Their failure to make the playoffs (Steelers) last year for the first time since 2013 was perhaps another hint.
But the Pittsburgh Steelers now have their clearest indication yet that it's time to start fresh.
Ben Roethlisberger looks like a man tired of being hit. He looks defeated, exhausted and somewhat out of shape. And while that's perfectly understandable, it's also a sign that it might be time for something new.
Same thing is happening in New Orleans with Drew Brees. Is father time catching up with these all-time great quarterbacks? Is Tim Tebow out of his mind with this idea that college athletes should not be paid for their likeness?

Andrew Luck's sudden retirement has sent shockwaves across the NFL over the past two days. Luck, who is just 29 years old, said his continued battle with injuries has ultimately led to his decision to hang up his cleats after just seven seasons and 86 regular season games. Luck said his decision to retire is based on how the injuries he has consistently endured over the past four years has taken their toll on him both physically and mentally.
We often look at athletes with awe and envy, blessed with genetic gifts most can only wonder at possessing. But those gifts often come with a price, the unreal expectation that an athlete wonât falter on the field or give in to injury.

This year's free agency is shaping up to be one of the biggest and most eventful in a while. Several marquee free agents have already departed from their current teams, including two-time Finals MVP Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, who are taking their talents to Brooklyn. The summer's biggest prize, Kawhi Leonard, will reportedly meet with the Clippers, Lakers and Raptors. Not to mention there will be a second tier of star free agents who will be intensely pursued, including established veteran names such as DeMarcus Cousins.

The three-peat dreams are somehow still alive.
The Golden State Warriors lost Kevin Durant to injury and fell behind by six points with less than four minutes remaining but still escaped Scotiabank Arena with a 106-105 victory over the Toronto Raptors in Monday's Game 5 of the 2019 NBA Finals.
Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson combined for three straight three-pointers after falling behind by six to give Golden State the lead for good, and Draymond Green tipped away Kyle Lowry's buzzer-beater that would have given the Raptors the championship.

This week I sat down with ESPN's long time anchor Jay Harris. A figure I looked up to since my Freshman year in college (2003) which was the same year Mr. Harris joined ESPN's team.
About Jay Harris
Jay Harris joined ESPN in February 2003 as a SportsCenter anchor, and in February, 2016, he was named as one of the anchor for the new 7 a.m. SportsCenter:AM program.
Harris came to ESPN from WPGH-TV in Pittsburgh, Pa. where he was a news anchor/reporter.
Harris has more than 25 years of experience in television and radio news, including morning news anchor at WAMO-FM and national news at American Urban Radio Networks, both in Pittsburgh, and at WOWI-FM in Norfolk, Va. His work outside of sports included the trapped coal miners near Pittsburgh, and, while in Virginia, the fatal USS Iowa battleship explosion.
A native of Norfolk, Va., Harris was graduated from Old Dominion University with a bachelorâs degree in speech communication in 1987. In 2003 he was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University. In 2004, he was the keynote speaker for Old Dominionâs 100th commencement ceremony.
Among his other honors, Harris was part of SportsCenterâs Sports Emmy-winning efforts in 2004 and 2005, and a recipient of the Silver World Medal from the New York Festival Awards, Robert L. We also talk about the NBA 2nd half of the season. Who's going to run away with the MVP? Are the Lakers going to make the playoffs? Will Milwakee or Toronto host the NBA Finals?Â

The NBA superteam is no more a modern phenomenon than the game of basketball itself. So long as there have been titles contested, there have been superteams. Over the first 30 years of the NBA's existence, however, we saw just three such squads â Wilt's stacked Lakers, the early-'70s Bucks, and the 1982-83 Philadelphia 76ers.
The history of the NBA superteam enters murky water after 1983 and beyond
Unrestricted free agency was in full swing by the mid-'90s, but no star had the audacity to shout, "If you can't beat them, join them."
That's what we talk about today and how Anthony Davis' trade request does the NBA Landscape.

Steve has some thoughts this week about leadership qualities coming from some professional sports teams. He looks into the Pittsburg's Steelers LeVeon Bell situation as well as ex Minnesota Timberwolves Jimmy Butler and his impact on his new team the Philadelphia 76ers, and also covers 20+ rebound games.
Leadership is a massive part of any sport. Whether youâve been a coach for the last 20 years or you recently stepped up to captain your side for the first time, leadership should always be at the forefront of your thinking.Â
It does come with a lot of pressure and the best captains and managers are constantly under scrutiny; thatâs why itâs important to incorporate certain values into your leadership to allow your team to reach its full potential and ease the overall pressure.
