What if Margaret Sanger (Founder of Planned Parenthood) and St. John Paul II (Papal Juggernuat) sat down and debated their divergent ideas about personal freedom, choice, and women's dignity? That's the provocative question posed by today's guest, Dr. Sarah Denny Lorio, theologian and bioethicist.

We unpack Sanger’s drive and reasoning, the birth control movement, and why she’s such a divisive figure (e.g. racism and eugenics). Then, we look at John Paul II’s powerful alternative: a view of freedom rooted in dignity, mutual respect, and honoring the differences between men and women. Together, we imagine what a “third way” in sex education could look like—one that blends awareness of our bodies with the values of respect and responsibility.

Now that the election is over, it's important to maintain a spirit of dialogue with those who disagree with over values and that's the aim of this episode. This conversation will leave you rethinking what true freedom means for women and men today!

With Halloween just around the corner, let’s talk about humorously frightening online dating experiences. In this episode, I sit down with Maria Mitchell, the mind behind the hilarious Instagram account "Catholic Dating Nightmares." We dive into the wild world of Catholic dating, where unrealistic expectations and cringe-worthy profiles meet the need for humor and hope. Maria shares the story of how her Instagram started as a joke with friends and quickly became a community of people laughing through their dating struggles. (Laugh or cry right?) Not only does she share some highlights of her feed, but we also get into very clear practical advice about how to “market” yourself on dating apps, best practices for first dates, and knowing when to pull back from the dating scene should it become too discouraging. If you’re navigating the ups and downs of modern dating (or just need a good laugh), you won’t want to miss this one!

In this solo episode of the Always Hope Podcast, I dive into a question I often hear: "When should I seek counseling, and when is it time to consider medication?" As a licensed marriage and family therapist with over 20 years of experience, I want to provide you with practical guidance on this important topic. We'll explore the differences between depression and anxiety, how to recognize when you're feeling "stuck," and what it means to draw on your natural resources like community support, exercise, and prayer. But what happens when those aren’t enough? I'll walk you through the benefits of professional counseling and how medication can play a role in your healing journey—without being the whole answer. If you've ever wondered if it's time to take that next step in caring for your mental health or just need a bit of hope and encouragement, this episode is for you. Tune in, and let’s tackle these challenges together with faith, wisdom, and a balanced approach to finding peace.

I consider Catholicism to be a reasonable faith. One that doesn’t exist in extremes and by doing so can speak to all sides of an issue. And yes, that includes modern feminist theory.

So today, I sit down with Dr. Kevin Stuart to discuss the creation of a new Catholic Women's and Gender Studies program at the University of St. Thomas. We dive into the tension between traditional Catholic views and the secular discourse on gender studies. Dr. Stuart explains the goals of the program, which integrates faith, scientific literature, and a Catholic perspective on feminism, gender, and the role of women in society. Rather, than outright rejecting feminism, they are engaging in intellectual dialogue with its leading theorists.

We further discuss why this program exists, the appropriate use of the term ‘gender,’ how technology has changed the landscape for male-female relations, and what we can to do continue pushing against a utilitarian/transactional view of sexuality.

We all know what it feels like to be drowning under a pile of work or overwhelmed by difficulties beyond our control. Those moments when our emotions become overwhelming, and we lose a reference point to keep us stable.

That feeling of being out-of-control is encapsulated by the symbolism of water in scripture, and that’s what we are diving into in today’s episode. Through stories from the Old and New Testaments, Dr. Mario Sacasa explores how faith can guide us through life's storms. See how these biblical images offer us hope, comfort, and a path forward through God’s grace.

Mario emphasizes the importance of trust as a developmental milestone and explains how spiritual truths can anchor our emotional well-being. He also reflects on how faith helps us navigate suffering, chaos, and uncertainty, offering a firm foundation in God's presence.

The episode closes with an invitation to prayer for communities affected by Hurricane Helene, and ways to support relief efforts for those impacted by natural disasters.

Why did God give us free will? Think about it. All the poor judgments made by humans, the evils we have committed, the collective sins of history… wouldn’t creation have been better off without free agency? By the end of this show, you’ll know why the answer to that question is an unequivocal “No.”

I bring back my good friend Dr. Tom Neal, and his patience, as he allows me to wrestle with these deep and troubling questions. Once again, his wisdom shines through in his answers. In this episode, we go after why God gave us free will, how without we could not love, the problem of moral evil, how we are not mere puppets in the hand of capricious God, why we need to cherish this supreme gift endowed on us, and glimpse of what our free will may look like in heaven.

I know I say this with all my episodes, but this truly is another gem of a show. At times, we get philosophical but hang it there, because it is worth it. You’ll walk way cherishing the gift of your freedom.

The pressures of dating are real! But how do we let them go? Is there a way to date intentionally but without the intensity?

This conversation originally appeared on the Thriving in the Space Between podcast, and I am grateful for Maria and Meghan for letting me drop it on my show, too. You may remember them from an episode last year when we talked about dating advice from single women, and we pick up where we left off last time around.

In today’s episode, I’m the one answering the questions, not asking them. They fielded questions from the women they serve in their Intentional Single community. So, we have a wide-ranging conversation on balancing dating and marriage intentions, the role of physical attraction, how social media and dating apps impact relationship dynamics, navigating pornography struggles of potential partners, healing from past relationships, how to be vulnerable, and the importance of play in dating.

Happiness is an elusive ideal. What contributes to it? Why does it feel like happiness is a Game of Whac-a-Mole? When we feel it in one place, somewhere else gets misaligned. But how does having faith and living a moral life aid in the quest for achieving happiness?

To discuss these questions and more, I welcome Fr. Robert Spitzer, host of Fr. Spitzer’s Universe on EWTN and President of the Magis Center for Faith and Reason, to talk about his new book, “The Four Levels of Happiness: Your Path to Personal Flourishing.”

In today’s episode, we discuss how happiness is the fulfillment of desire, but that there are multiple desires within us, and they are sometimes competing with each other. Which is all part of God’s crazy plan for us. Fr. Spitzer explains his concept of the four levels of happiness and how we can pursue them. We discuss why faith is connected to the highest level of happiness and that living a moral life is integral to the pursuit of happiness.

As a marriage therapist that integrates my faith into my work, it is often difficult to find resources I can share about marital intimacy that are appropriate for Catholic and Christian couples, because what is generally out there is overly explicit and reductionistic. What can faithful couples do who want to improve their physical intimacy? Listen to this episode and share with their friends.

I’m excited to welcome back to the podcast, Dr. Sarah Bartel, Catholic moral theologian, to discuss her new online course: My Delight for Catholic Wives.

This episode is a comprehensive discussion on the topic of enhancing marital intimacy within the context of faith. We focus on common challenges faced by Catholic Christian wives regarding physical intimacy. We discuss the differences between men and women’s anatomies, arousal curves, and experiences of lovemaking. The conversation covers various aspects such as dealing with emotional challenges, physical challenges, misconceptions around 'obligation sex,' and other hinderances to healthy sexual expression in marriage. We cover many practical suggestions for improving intimacy that will help your marriage: the need for transition time, seeing intimacy as an important part of your relationship, the significance of foreplay, and embracing novelty while staying connected to each other.

I am giving the caveat that this is a detailed conversation, so you may want to listen to this one with your headphones on. And I strongly encourage that this episode be listened to by folks who are already married or engaged couples preparing for marriage. It’ll help you reclaim joy in the bedroom.

In today’s episode, we are talking all things dating and Dating Well! This is a repost as I’m a guest on the Thinking Faith! Podcast and the host Dr. Brett Salkeld is leading this conversation. Dr. Salkeld is the archdiocesan theologian for the Archdiocese of Regina, Canada. We talk about Dating Well, boundaries in relationships, and why dating is a discernment process. It’s a long conversation because it was originally released in two parts, but I’m giving to you as one long episode. (That’s what pause buttons were invented for!) Enjoy.

In this short episode, I’m sharing a huge announcement… We are moving to Charlotte, NC. This show is about hope right? So, I’m happy to share that this long-held desire of ours is finally coming to fruition.

Also, a brief programming note, because of the demands of the move, I will be pausing the show until late August. Don’t worry! I have zero desire to stop producing this podcast, just need to focus on my family and getting us settled over the next few weeks. Looking forward to continuing this show from NC! See you soon.

Today, I welcome back my friend, Fr Josh Johnson to talk about his new book “On Earth as It Is in Heaven: Restoring God’s Vision of Race and Discipleship.” We have a wonderful conversation about the importance of seeing race and ethnicity primarily through the lens of the gospel and evangelization, as this is the great commission of Jesus.

We talk about Jesus’ desire for all to be invited to the heavenly banquet and how the Church has evangelized to various nations in her history. Fr Josh shares modern stories of leaders who have taking practical steps forward, areas that we still need to grow in, ways we can increase cultural representations in our parishes and ministry events, and how we can rethink our politics in light of the gospel.

So often we feel that to be a faithful Catholic, we need to work for the Church, or some Church related ministry. But I’m here to tell you that’s not the case. You can and need to exercise Catholic values and ethics in your workspaces, communities, and neighborhoods. But how?

Joining me on the show to teach us about Catholic leadership in secular spaces is Cristofer Pereyra and Erin Monnin, authors of the book Catholic Leadership for Civil Society. Cristofer is the CEO of Tepeyac Leadership Initiative, a program geared towards training Catholic leaders for society not just lay ecclesial ministry.

In this episode, we discuss what it means to be a leader, the importance of needing faithful Catholics in all aspects of society, including businesses, non-profit board service, and politics, discerning where God is calling you to serve, and the role hope plays in leadership.

Episode 100! What a gift! Thanks for listening and supporting this show! Since it’s a big occasion, I thought it’d be best to welcome back my first guest, Dr. Jennifer Morel, moral theologian and Director of Research for the International Institute of Culture and Gender Studies, to talk about her research on sex and gender.

In today’s episode we talk about her research that literally brought her all over the world. She interviewed leaders in 14 different cultures to gain a better understand of how culture influences our understanding of sex. We talk at length about the Catholic Church’s understanding of gender, the stories she heard in her interviews, how different cultures demonstrate healthy relationships between men and women, the dangers of the sociopolitical extremes on these topics, and how to pursue the truth about our human embodiedness.

Following the leak of the draft decision from Supreme Court, the question on everyone’s minds is, “Now what?” If the final decision is left intact and Roe v Wade gets overturned, what does that mean for abortion access in the US? How will states respond? How will the federal government respond? What are the next steps for the pro-life movement in a post Roe America?

Joining me on the show to talk through these questions is Ben Clapper, Executive Director of Louisiana Right to Life. In today’s episode, we discuss the Mississippi law that the Supreme Court is ruling on, how it’s different from the Louisiana and Texas laws they recently ruled against, will this decrease the number of abortions, how to provide better care and options for women who are considering an abortion, how this ruling better enables conversation and democracy, and concerns about the leak for the future integrity of the Court.

Let’s be honest and state that we are all on our devices and social media a lot these days. Scrolling. Watching. Commenting. Playing. But what impact do these devices have on our mental and spiritual health? How do they help or hurt us?

Joining me on the show today to talk about that is Dr. Michael Horne, Licensed Psychologist at the Alpha-Omega Clinic, and author of the book “Tech Talk: Strategies for Families in a Digital World” by Our Sunday Visitor.

In this episode, we discuss the ways technology impacts communication and our relationships, how social media should be a great starting place for communication but shouldn’t be the sole means of a relationship, how better allocation of our time is crucial to our technology use, the correlation between time online and mental health issues, how we define friendship in the Facebook age, and how to use technology for good and meaningful endeavors.

Have you ever wondered if doing your taxes and changing diapers can make you a saint? Have you ever looked at the circumstances of your life and said, “God how does this make me a better person”? If so, how do we find holiness in the mundane tasks of ordinary life?

Joining me on the show to have a rich and deep conversation about these questions, is Dr. Tony Marco, Assistant Professor of Theology at Marian University’s Ancilla College. In today’s episode, we talk about the role of the laity in the Church’s mission, what it means to be leaven from within and consecrate the world, how to see the sacred in the secular, why the theological insights of Maximus the Confessor are relevant today, how we grow in holiness, and what God expects of the gifts he has given.

How do you know if you are growing in the spiritual life? How do you know if your prayers are doing anything? What are the markers of spiritual growth?

Joining me on the show today is Dr. Brant Pitre, Research Professor of Scripture at the Augustine Institute, Graduate School of Theology, to talk about his new book “The Introduction to the Spiritual Life.” In today’s episode, we discuss the foundations of prayer, why the Ten Commandments are not just rules but a path of love and growth, why our will is important as we conform to the Will of God, how to know if we are making progress in our spiritual lives, and why growth in virtue is a key sign. But we also talk about the hardships of faith, the uniqueness of this journey, what to do with unanswered prayers, and in-depth reflections on the biblical story of Jacob wrestling the angel and the parable of the persistent widow.

Just in time for Lent, let’s talk about how to break those bad habits in life! Joining me on the show is Br Sam Gunn, BH, who was my campus minister when I was in college, to talk about his new book “Clean Break.”

We start the show by talking about how we came to know Jesus, the mission of the Brotherhood of Hope, the importance of campus ministry, and the types of questions young adults are asking.

Then, we transition to a discussion about “Clean Break,” the nature of compulsive habits, what the addiction cycle looks like, and specific interventions to break bad habits.

Throughout the show we talk about the mystery of God’s providence, the role of grace in our healing, and why God allows us to struggle with certain sins.

We discuss how the Church’s pastoral approaches to suicide have changed, how therapists need better diagnostic tools to catch suicidality, how we feel helpless in the face of great suffering, how parishes can better meet the needs of parishioners who have lost a loved one due to mental illness, and how clergy can be more vulnerable about their own struggles.

Exodus 90 is a program aimed at helping men grow in their spiritual and ascetical practices. It is built around small groups, regular prayer exercises, and giving up a long list of creature comforts. It has grown tremendously over the last few years. And while, I hear many people talk about its positives, I do have some questions about how it fits within the Church’s larger understanding of the spiritual life.

Joining me on the show to talk about those questions is Nathaniel Binversie, director of content for Exodus 90. We talk about the history of the program and how it has evolved over the years. We further discuss the difference between passive purgation vs active purgation and the purpose of giving things up as part of our spiritual growth. We debate the merits of pushing yourself too hard in your ascetical practices, how to find balance in life, and how Exodus fits within the Church’s liturgical calendar and spiritual traditions. We also discuss the need to incorporating almsgiving and service into any spiritual discipline.

Recently, Christianity Today released a podcast called “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill” that chronicles the events of megachurch in Seattle, WA. That podcast is a 12-part series that gets into the weeds of how Mars Hill rose to prominence built around the personality of a fiery pastor and how things fell apart rather quickly in the end. Even though I’m not an Evangelical nor from Seattle, this podcast touched somewhere deep inside me. It put a spotlight on an issue that I’ve encountered personally and in the lives of many of my clients: celebrity, pride, vanity, and spiritual abuse in the Church. If you have ever given your life and energy to a ministry, religious order, or movement, only to encounter a system of control or abuse, then this episode of Always Hope is for you.

Today’s show isn’t so much about the events of Mars Hill but the analogues I have encountered in Catholic environments. You don’t have to listen to the Mars Hill podcast to follow along, but just keep an open mind. There is a profound mystery of grace at work when discernments fall apart because of human sin.

Joining me on the show to talk about all this stuff is Austin Ashcraft, a good friend from North Carolina. Austin is the person who first tipped me off to the Mars Hill podcast and we’ve had many conversations about these themes over the years and we just finally decided to hit the record button. Consider this episode just two friends talking about our ministry battle scars and how we are still trying to make sense of it all. We talk about the dangers of celebrity culture, is success the only measure of God’s providence?, Joshua Harris and Audrey Assad’s reasons for leaving their respective faiths, the importance to ask questions when facing doubts, and the lingering impact spiritual abuse has on people’s relationship with God.

Have you ever wondered why people react differently to the same thing? Why is it that some folks are quick to get angry about the slightest thing, but others are more patient? Why does your wife prefer to stay home when all you want to do is be around people? Maybe it’s because we all have different temperaments.

Joining me on the show to talk about his book “The Temperament God Gave You” is Art Bennett. In todays’ show we talk about what it means to integrate psychology with Catholicism. How his professional journey led him to write the book with his wife. We, of course, dive deep into a conversation about the temperaments: what they are, how they are different than personality types, the four classic classifications, limitations of using them, the need for virtue, and how knowing your temperament can aid your spiritual growth.

Well, we talk about vocations and discernment often in this show and today I want to take a systemic approach to the questions and ask what parishes and schools can do better to increase awareness about vocations. And since it is national vocations week, I thought it’d be a great time to share this discussion.

To help me think through how to do that is Rhonda Gruenewald, author of the books “Hundredfold” and “The Harvest” and founder of the ministry Vocation Ministry. In today’s episode we talk about her journey of faith and what led her to start a ministry dedicated to helping parishes and schools create a culture of vocations, how to talk to your kids about different vocations without putting pressure on them, and examining a few of the many practical suggestions she offers in her resources.

I’ve covered discernment many times in previous episodes on what to look for and best practices when making decisions. But today, I’ve taken a spotlight to errors I continuously hear from young adults about making decisions.

Joining me on the show again is Dr. Tom Neal, expert on the spiritual life and discernment, to banter and dissect some of these errors we commonly hear. Yes, this episode is critical of certain approaches, but if you are looking for the positive teachings that undergird our critiques, please listen to those previous episodes with Dr. Neal, Fr. Gallagher, Fr. Rafferty, Sr. Garrett, etc.

In today’s show we look at cynicism’s impact on discernment, why it’s a good idea to be open to feedback and accountability, why your desires and interior motivations are part of the discernment process, how to be patient with the lack of clarity in discernment, and how to find the balance when looking for external signs to confirm a decision.

Why should Catholics care about the teachings of Margaret Sanger? (After all, she is the foundress of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s leading provider of abortion and hormonal contraception.) Because understanding her life and thoughts provides insight into the current debates over women’s rights.

Joining me on the show today is Sarah Denny, who is writing her doctoral dissertation on a comparative analysis of the writings and teachings of Margaret Sanger and John Paul II. No small feat for sure! Sarah is a sharp theologian and beautifully weaves us through the points of connection and disagreement between gender theory and Catholic teaching.

In this episode, examine the context of Margaret Sanger’s life, her motivations, where she was right and where she was off. We, then, bring John Paul II into the conversation and his fuller vision of human freedom and love. It’s a long episode, where we get into the weeds of the birth of birth control, sex education, abortion, and fertility charting.

Keep an open mind with this episode, it will challenge you. Beyond the topic itself, this episode is a case study on the importance of learning how to listen to those you disagree with.

It builds on the first two talks and like the end of a good trilogy brings the whole thing together. We share some of the reasons why we worry, how to approach fear and anxiety through a lens of faith, how to foster resiliency, and how to place your focus on the lovely things of life. This talk that equips you with practical ways of living hope. I also lead you through a guided meditation in this presentation, so be ready for that. Here we go, Part 2 of 3 of Hope Leads the Way! In the first presentation we focused on the psychology of hope and today we are taking the next step on our journey and examine hope as a theological virtue. What does it mean to think of hope an acquired habit? Or a firm disposition of our interior life towards the good? This is the crux of the series, and it will open your eyes to a fuller vision of what hope is. You will never view hope as something passive or foolish again.

Alright, I’m pumped because I have something special for you today. Over the next three episodes of the podcast, I’m going to do something different. Instead of having a guest and doing a typical interview, I want to share with you my lecture series on hope. These are deeply personal lectures, where I dive into my own struggles with hope and how hope lead me out of professional burnout and depression. I truly believe hope is a misunderstood virtue and I’m seeking to correct the error now.

This first lecture introduces the series and dives into the psychological research of hope. If you’re a regular listener of the show, you know that I love to integrate faith and counseling and you are about to get a full helping of that in this presentation and in the next two. Stay tuned, those will drop next week and the week after that.

A quick note: these lectures were delivered at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Tallahassee, FL as their Lenten mission, but neither of those particulars takes away from the universal application of this message. I know that you’ll get something out of them! You don’t need to see the slides, but if you want to, a pdf version is available in the show notes.

What can the dying teach us about living a good life? How does awareness of our mortality benefit discernment? Is a peaceful death a grace, something you earn, or both?

This is the focus of today’s episode with Paul Malley, President of Aging with Dignity, a non-profit dedicated to safeguarding the rights of the elderly, disabled, and mentally ill especially during times of serious illness.

Paul beautifully shares insights and lessons learned from over 20 years of serving the sick and dying. We often hear how technology and social media are ruining our society. While that is probably true, what if we could use the good from those platforms to improve evangelization and communication within the Church? What can modern marketing tools teach us about effectively promoting the gospel?

That’s the focus of today’s episode and joining me on the show is Jason Jensen, CEO of Glass Canvas, the company behind the Tilma Parish digital platform. We have an in-depth conversation about the importance of a good branding and marketing message, how the Church competes in the modern marketplace for people’s attention, how technology can effectively aid evangelization and relationship building, and real world uses of the Tilma Parish platform.

Dr. Mario Sacasa welcomes his friend Jason Angelette to talk about what life has been like as a widower. On August 16, 2020, Elise Angelette lost her earthly battle to cancer after a six-year fight. It’s been eight months since her passing, and this episode gives Jason space to share some reflections on what this new season in his life has taught him.

He shares how 18 years of living a sacramental union has shaped him and lessons learned about bringing Christ in our grief. In the light of civil unrest over racial injustice, there is a great need for models of holiness that can show us a way forward. Yet, what does choosing holiness over racism look like? I’ve dedicated this show to help you grow in your spiritual and emotional health. And while most of my shows have a specific theme or topic focused on growth areas, I’m trying something different today. For a while, I’ve wanted to not just do shows on themes but about people; I’ve wanted to interview “Persons of Hope”, people who are simply living life well and quietly doing God’s work. You know, the everyday saints who rarely get their due.

Joining me on the show today is Fr Jim Schmitmeyer, priest of the Diocese of Amarillo, TX and pastor of St John the Evangelist Church in the rural oilfield town of Borger, TX. In today’s episode, you will hear the tender heart of a shepherd who knows his sheep. And how they have all shown him the love of Christ in the world. Dr. Mario Sacasa welcomes Dr. Chris Baglow, Director the Science and Religion Initiative at the Mcgrath Institute for Church Life, University of Notre Dame, to discuss various ways faith and science connect and disagree with one another. They discuss the dangers of a scientism that opposes religious thought and the problems when people of faith are too shallow in their understanding of science. Towards the end of the episode, they tackle specific faith/science situations: Galileo and the Catholic Church, Darwin’s faith, intelligent aliens and the Incarnation, and how Catholics should approach climate change.

As I was preparing for my yearly summer trip to Omaha, NE, I packed my podcasting equipment knowing that I was going to interview with Fr Timothy Gallagher, the last episode, but I had a sense that there would be someone else that I would meet and interview. So, on a fateful evening, in our dorm’s common area, I met Bob Osborne, a Pentecostal pastor from Calgary, Canada. We were both trying to watch the NBA Finals, but quickly connected and shared some great conversations while watching the series. We went to lunch, and it quickly became apparent that he would be my other interview in Omaha.

Because a chance encounter like that could only be the Holy Spirit, we decided to focus our conversation on the third person of the trinity. Bob’s gentleness, optimism, and depth deeply impressed me and those qualities shine in this interview. So, we got into it and ask who is the Holy Spirit and how do we come to know him? We talked about how to decipher experiences in life and letting them lead you to the truth. We discussed embracing the gifts of thinking, feeling, and choosing. He opened up about his journey of faith, which has led him to the deep roots of our faith. We talked about what it means to have faith in an infinite personal God (his phrase). And lastly how the sanity of Jesus should guide our experiences of the Holy Spirit.

Many gems waiting for you in this episode. When it is done, please subscribe and share this episode with anyone looking to deepen their understanding of the Holy Spirit.

You know the scenario. Everything is going well, prayer is rich, family is good, life is generally pleasant. And then out of nowhere something comes along that upsets the apple cart. You start feeling a little discouraged and the first thing to go is prayer. Why? If God wants me to be close to him, why would he allow moments of discouragement that seemingly push me away? ? Spiritual desolation is the focus of today’s episode and joining me is Fr. Timothy Gallagher, popular author and lecturer on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. He has written and spoken much on navigating the spiritual life. He is a gentle soul and a skilled spiritual director. And his insights into spiritual desolation are singular. In this episode, we start by explaining who St. Ignatius of Loyola is and why he developed these exercises. We talk about learning how to distinguish the various movements within ourselves: the good spirit, the bad spirit, and our human liabilities. We define spiritual vs non-spiritual consolations and desolations. He describes the typical tactics used by the devil to trip us on the spiritual journey. The value of attending to our emotional life and how counseling can be of great benefit. We layout various reasons why God would allow spiritual desolation. And we end with differentiating between spiritual desolation and the dark night of the soul. After you have finished enjoying this episode, please leave a review or rating. It truly helps others discover the great content we have on Always Hope.

Abortion. You can’t say the word without evoking angst, defensiveness, and possibly rage. The problem, however, with the word becoming a political barometer of left vs right affiliation is that the people who suffer them are being lost in the cracks. We must mourn the unborn and help the men and women who have made the decision to end their pregnancy. Is it possible to push past the politics and just try to be helpful? Or what about a miscarriage? How do we minister to someone when they’ve experienced this? It just seems like we don’t know how to talk about these moments with freedom, empathy, and compassion. That’s what this episode is about and joining me today is the Founder and Director of Life Perspectives, Michealene Fredenburg.

In this episode, we talk about the various types of reproductive loss and best practices when helping someone after they’ve experienced it. We discuss the differences in grief due to a miscarriage or an abortion. We challenge the notion that it is just business as usual following either one. We also talk about the differences between how men and women grieve following a reproductive loss.

I know this is a sensitive topic, but my prayer is that you can listen to our conversation with an open heart. There are a lot of people in our communities who have experienced a miscarriage or an abortion. We need to give them space to speak up and process their pain. If that’s you, my hope is that this episode gives you that permission to grieve.

After the show is done, please follow me on Instagram or Facebook @drmariosacasa, I look forward to hearing your feedback and comments there.

You know how you want to do everything in life, but you just feel like you can’t do it all? If that’s you, then this is your episode. If you’re like me, finding the balance between the idealistic and the practical feels easier than finding a unicorn in the forest. Can you follow a dream and provide for your family? Or is this just a Sisyphean endeavor?

Joining me today on the show is Paul George, author of the book “Rethink Happiness” by Ave Maria Press. He is a popular globe-trotting speaker to youth and young adults. And in his spare time, he runs a couple of non-profits and is married with five kids. So, yeah, he’s a busy dude trying to find that happy balance in life.

In today’s episode, we discuss how to live with conviction while addressing the practical demands of life. He expands upon his personal mission of helping people understand “the art of living” and why mentorship is key for it. We talk about how to handle dreams left unfulfilled and knowing when it’s time to move on. We chat about the need for ongoing personal conversion. And we end this episode, talking about how to teach our kids the importance of working through failures.

In this show, I don’t mess around with easy topics, as I have stated many times, my desire is to find God’s goodness precisely in the challenging places our lives and culture. So, I couldn’t help myself when I got curious about how two seemingly opposed ideologies can actually fit together: Catholicism and Feminism. Can there be such a thing as a Catholic feminism? Yes, there can, but we need to talk about what that looks like.

Joining me once again on the show is Dr. Jennifer Miller from Notre Dame Seminary, since the last time I had her on, she has become the Director of Research at a center she co-founded called the International Institute of Culture and Gender Studies.  I promised you way back with the first episode on authentic masculinity that I would have her back on to talk about femininity and, boy, this episode was worth the wait.

Put your thinking caps on with me in this one because we get into it and talk about the historical roots of Catholic feminism, ways women are distinct from men, particular challenges women face today, concerns for women as we march forward with a gender-less society, and why understanding sex complementarity is the best option. The conversation is very timely for many of the larger questions women and men face today.

The busyness of life makes it difficult to find time to reconnect and rest together as spouses. Often it feels like everything becomes a priority before my spouse. Even when we are doing good things for our families and ministries, we have to stop and be deliberate to pray with our spouse. But how? That’s the topic of conversation for today’s episode. Which is the last part of my relationship miniseries, if you have missed those, please check them out.

Joining me today is Jason Angelette, Director, and my brother-in-arms at Willwoods Faith and Marriage. Jason and I have done a number of Facebook livestreams on various topics about life and culture, but this was his first time as a guest on Always Hope! He has written a great program that teaches couples how to prayer together, call United in Love, United in Christ, so I knew he was the perfect person to talk about it. In this episode, we talk about the importance of both individual and couple prayer time, why we need more leisure in our lives, how an established couple prayer life spills over to our children, and the importance of couples going on retreats together. We get into some practical and creative ways of finding prayer time in the busyness of life.

At the end of the show, I answer a question from a listener that was submitted on the “Ask Dr. Mario” tab on faithandmarriage.org/alwayshope. The question is about how to manage difficult conversations with our spouses, specifically when there is a disagreement with finances.

BONUS EPISODE! Consider this episode a little lagniappe, as they like to say in Southern Louisiana. On March 23, 2019, I gave a presentation on discerning the celibate priesthood to seminarians at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, MN. Thanks to Fr. Marty Schaefer and their Rector Fr. Robert Horihan for, who invited me to lead their “Vir in Christo” weekends this academic year. That is the name they give to their retreat weekends focused on human formation. The theme for this year was on masculinity and this presentation is on how celibacy is an authentic expression of their sexuality. It was my fifth lecture over the course of the two weekends, but it stands alone and barely draws on the previous four presentations, which is why I’m sharing it on the podcast.

In this lecture, I hit hard the beauty and challenge of discerning the celibate vocation. I reflect on Jesus’ words in Matthew’s gospel about the purpose of celibacy. I talk about the complementarity of the celibate life and married life. I draw distinctions between abstinence, chastity, and celibacy. I encourage the men to be honest with their hearts and feelings, urging them to develop a real friendship with Jesus and each other. And I end with a warning of what happens when celibacy is motivated by something other than Love.

While this is a talk specifically geared to seminarians, it will bless anyone who wants to better understand the importance of the celibate vocation, especially in a time of scandal.

This is part 3 of my miniseries on dating and discernment and like the previous two episodes, I am trying to explore the balance between the theoretical and the practical when it comes to discernment because often the advice that is given errors one way or the other. In this episode, I target questions surrounding when you should move forward in a relationship and identifying red flags for when it is time to call it off.

Joining me today is Mary-Rose Verret, co-founder of the Witness to Love Marriage Preparation program, which she developed with her husband Ryan. I knew she had some wisdom to offer dating couples due to her years of experience prepping people for marriage. I love that their program integrates Attachment Theory and a Catholic Christian vision of marriage. Which if you follow me long enough, you’ll know that’s my psychological jam! They also have a unique way of approaching the use of mentor couples in marriage preparation.

In this episode, we talk about the needed support structures to help people with the transitions from single, to dating, to engaged, and to married. The difference between “sliding vs deciding” when moving towards marriage. The importance of being friends before rushing into a relationship. Also, she challenges married couples to open their homes to singles, which is hard when we are caught in our own family bubbles. And she encourages dating couples to have the hard conversations before engagement. Yes, it’s another great show!

It’s no secret that compulsive pornography use has become a rising issue in our culture. Thanks to the ubiquity of smartphones, the ability to access pornographic images and videos are easier than ever. And leading scientists in brain research are starting to show the detrimental effects porn is having on our neurobiology. There are many tremendous resources available to help people in recovery, so my focus for this show is on how pornography detrimentally impacts a person’s ability to discern their vocation in life. What guidelines should someone entering the seminary with this issue look for? What should I do if I’m a priest who struggles with porn and masturbation? When should I seriously consider dating if I have this compulsion? Or how involved should I be in my spouse’s recovery?

I dive deep into these questions and joining me on the show today is Fr. Sean Kilcawley, priest of the Diocese of Lincoln, NE. Fr. Sean is a nationally recognized speaker on the topic of pornography and how the Church should respond to people caught in its grip. His voice is clear and filled with compassion. In this episode, Fr. Sean shares his history with sex addiction and how helping others in their recovery is a matter of evangelistic importance. We define our terms and clarify what we mean by the term ‘addiction.’ We talk about how seminaries should handle porn use and the healthy expectations seminarians should have for themselves before stepping out of formation. He shares his particular dedication towards the recovery of other priests. And lastly, we turn our attention to offer guidelines for those of you who are dating or married.

We cannot bury our head in the sand about this issue anymore and my hope for this episode is that it provides some clarity for your discernment. This is a beautiful and challenging episode. Thanks for listening. When the show is done, please take second to message me your thoughts on Instagram or Facebook (@drmariosacasa).

On Always Hope, I’m usually the one who is asking the questions and guiding the conversation, but in this special episode, the roles have been reversed. On February, 25, 2019, I was invited to do an open Q&A on dating and relationship advice at the John Paul II House at Louisiana State University. That is a Catholic fraternity at a public school, which is just amazing! The JPII house is a ministry of Christ the King, the parish on LSU’s campus.

What you are getting in this episode is the full Q&A with minimal edits. The doors were open to whoever wanted to come and the room was packed with a good mix of men and women in attendance. It is a lively conversation where the college students asked me great questions about dating, marriage, raising kids, discernment, stages of relationships, and the much-contested question, “is there a soulmate?” What a gift to answer such great questions!

A very special shout out to the folks at Christ the King who made this episode possible: Fr. Andrew Merrick the pastor (thanks for letting this take place at your parish), Adam Trufant, who came up with the idea and really put the whole thing together (You rock!), the guys at the JPII house, for your hospitality to me and everyone else who crashed your living room that evening, and Shellie Pergola, for your technical wizardry! This episode turned out amazing! Thank you all.

This episode is the beginning of a miniseries that I’m doing on relationship advice. The next few episodes of Always Hope will focus on prayer in marriage, how pornography disrupts our ability to discern marriage or celibacy, and other dating advice. As I’ve said before, this podcast wants you to find God’s goodness in life’s challenges and so we have to bring hope and clarity to marriage and relationships. Please, subscribe to the show so you don’t miss the future episodes!

Mindfulness is a buzzword in the field of mental health. Studies have shown its effectiveness for treating a whole host of issues from anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. What is Mindfulness and why is it helpful? Moreover, recognizing that this practice is rooted in a Buddhist spiritual tradition, how does a Catholic Christian appropriately integrate mindfulness into their lives? Is there an appropriate way or is it something that we should stay away from?

Answering these questions with me today is Dr. Greg Bottaro, founder and executive director of the Catholic Psych Institute in New York. Dr. Greg, is also the author of the book The Mindful Catholic and has a lot to say about how Catholics can appropriately use mindfulness to help gain better focus and awareness in their lives.

In today’s episode, we start by talking about what mindfulness is, the effectiveness of the practice, when it is in line with Catholic spirituality and when it isn’t, the concerns with the metaphysical teaching that undergird this and other Eastern meditation practices (that is to say, why we cannot ignore what secular versions of mindfulness teach about the bigger questions: who are we and is there a God?), why society is moving towards a New Age mysticism, how to trust your inner compass, and learn from your mistakes.

I’m pumped that this is my first episode interviewing another psychotherapist! And the first time that I have tackled an issue specific to counseling or psychology today.

In this podcast, I often talk about suffering in life and various ways to overcome it. That’s because I believe that knowing how to handle our suffering is the key to unlocking personal maturity and happiness. So, in today’s show, I am focusing the conversation squarely on understanding how to make suffering redemptive. Redemptive suffering is not an oxymoron, but an invitation by Christ to unite all aspects of our lives with his passion and resurrection. Joining me on the show is Dr. Dawn Eden Goldstein, author, public speaker, and assistant professor of dogmatic theology at Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, CT. She has written about healing and suffering in her popular books. Also, exploring the development of a Catholic theology of redemptive suffering was the focus of her doctoral dissertation. In this episode, we define the nature of redemptive suffering, the process of bringing our sufferings (big and small) to Christ, the proper role of ascetical practices in the spiritual life, the role of memory in the spiritual life, and concerns with prayer techniques that ignore natural methods of healing (specifically one that is commonly known as “inner healing prayer”). This is another great show and it will help you better understand how to bring your daily aches of life to prayer and relationship with Christ.

Debt, savings, spending, and tithing… for many of us, money is a topic of conversation that no one wants to have. We all attribute certain values to money: power, freedom, guilt, or shame. And because I love talking about the hard things in life and we need to go here, have an honest conversation about why money makes us feel so uncomfortable and what we can do to make these conversations easier, so that we can be more generous with our finances.

Joining me on the show is my friend Cory Howat, the Director of the Catholic Community Foundation in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He is someone who I think has never struggled talking about money and brings a clarity to this topic that is disarming, encouraging, and freeing. In this episode, we discuss reasons why talking about money is so hard. Define stewardship as an outgrowth of gratitude. How the ‘need to give’ is a holy desire too often forgotten. Ideas of what Catholic parishes can do to help people get back on track with their finances. And how Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University is a great model that can be incorporated within a Catholic framework.

Another great episode is on dock for you today. As with every show, I pray that it helps you navigate through the challenges of life.

Have you ever had a hard day at work and while you are driving home all you can think about is the stress and tension of the day? Then, out of nowhere, you see the sun setting and it just captures your heart and for a brief moment, your stress dissipates as you get lost in the beauty of the moment. Or, how come we know which song to listen to or movie to watch when we need a good cry? In other words, why does beauty pierce our hearts?

Answering those questions in depth is the focus of today’s episode and joining me on the show is Bill Donaghy, Senior Lecturer and Content Specialist for the Theology of the Body Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bill has delivered numerous lectures on the topic of beauty and its implications to faith and life.

In this episode, we talk about the transcendental nature of beauty, its relationship with truth and goodness, the role of beauty in bringing hope to others, how being overly pragmatic is not fully human, and how beauty can raise us above our suffering. We end the show by exploring practical ways to cultivate more attention to beauty in your life.

This part 2 of my conversation about the lay vocation with Dr. Tom Neal, professor of Spiritual and Pastoral Theology at Notre Dame Seminary.  If you missed part 1, click on the link in the show description. We pick up right where it left off

In this episode, we have an honest conversation about the joys and challenges of being a lay person employed by the Catholic Church and cast a realistic vision of how lay people and ordained ministers can work more collaboratively and fruitfully. We end this conversation with a lengthy discussion about the Church scandals and Dr. Neal offers one of the best and nuanced responses lay people should have to the clergy abuse.

I’m excited about this episode, because I finally get to have on the show one of my favorite people to talk to, Dr. Tom Neal, professor of Spiritual and Pastoral Theology at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, LA. Dr. Neal is a dear friend and truly one of the wisest persons I know.

We focused the conversation in this episode on the gift and grace of the lay vocation. Since we had so much fun talking (and got long-winded), I decided to break the conversation into two parts. This is part 1 and part 2 will be up shortly.

In this part of the conversation, we set the foundation by talking about the unique role of the laity in the Church, what makes the lay state distinct from consecrated life or priesthood, how the laity “consecrate the world” (as it says in Lumen Gentium), and how the laity can develop an authentic spirituality that is congruent with their state of life.

If you are a lay Catholic, this is your episode on how to find God’s plan in the seemingly mundane or secular circumstances of your life. Be encouraged.

Doesn’t it seem like morality has become a bad word in our culture? Or that trying to be a good and moral person is not an ideal we should strive for anymore. That is probably because we overly associate morality with just following rules. But, what if morality is not so much about the do’s and don’ts but rather a response to love and intentionally making decisions to help us live better? And if that’s the case, well how do we raise our kids to have a good sense of morality?

That is today’s topic of conversation and joining me is Dr. Sarah Bartel; wife, mother, and moral theologian within the Archdiocese of Seattle. Dr. Bartel is a regular contributor for Northwest Catholic, co-hosts the radio program Enduring Love, and just released her first book, A Catechism for Family Life from CUA Press.

In this episode, we talk about how the Rich Young Man’s questions to Jesus (Matthew 19:16-22) are key to the moral life, how love and secure attachment must be the foundation for moral reasoning, trusting that as parents we are probably doing a better job than we give ourselves credit for, why some moral questions are clear and why others aren’t, and the need to call for grace when making tough decisions.

Discernment is tricky business and discerning a lifelong vocation is down-right hard! Knowing how to listen to God’s will, shifting through our desires, and ultimately having the confidence to make a decision is no small task. Knowing what to listen to in prayer and how to respond appropriately is the focus of today’s episode.

Joining me via Skype is Fr. Jim Rafferty, the Director of Communication and Mission at the Institute of Priestly Formation in Omaha, NE. As a diocesan priest for 24-years, Fr. Rafferty has walked with many folks through their vocational discernment. He has a unique perspective on this topic that I highly value.

I had the pleasure of speaking with him about the need to see love as the central motivating role in any vocational call, the difficulty of living with desire, why choosing the hardest option is not always good discernment, advice for individuals who leave the seminary or Religious life, and what parents can do to aid their children’s discernment.

Art has a significant role in the spiritual life. The ability to enter into the creative process, regardless of the medium, is an invitation by God to share in his creative energies. We need to stop neglecting our inner artist and see how God uses art to communicate his love in the world.

Joining me today is singer and songwriter Greg Boudreaux. He is half of the musical duo Greg&Lizzy and a member of the new musical venture, The Vigil Project. In this show, we talk about the role art plays in the spiritual life and evangelization, the importance of not looking at celebrity as the full measure of artistic success, his perspectives on writing songs with his wife, and the happenings and mission of The Vigil Project.

BONUS CONTENT: With gratitude to Greg, he has given me permission to include one of Greg&Lizzy’s songs at the end of the show! Have you ever wondered why the Bible makes so many references to the past? Up and down the old and new testaments, there are repeated appeals to “remember the works of the Lord” or for God to “remember his children.” This is because according to Scripture memory plays an important role in cultivating hope and building our relationship with God.

Hope and Memory are today’s focus and I couldn’t think of anyone better to have this discussion with than renowned scripture scholar, Dr. Brant Pitre. Dr. Pitre serves as the Distinguished Research Professor of Theology at the Augustine Institute and the author of numerous books and resources on the Bible and the Jewish roots of Christianity. In today’s episode, we examine the ways memory is important for relationship, how the liturgy is an act of remembrance, how to use scripture to pray through painful memories, and what repentance of our sins means in our relationship with Christ.

May this episode help you to better understand how God “remembers” you.

BONUS CONTENT: At the end of the episode, Dr. Pitre and I geek out for a few minutes about the music of Andrew Peterson. This has little to do with the subject of memory and scripture, but we could not hide our appreciation for his music. I hope that you would consider adding him to your listening queue. Enjoy!

As a culture, we rightly believe that empowerment and education often go hand-in-hand. Therefore, empowering women should also mean better education on the natural rhythms of her cycle. The need for both men and women to grow in fertility awareness is the topic of today’s episode and joining me today is FertilityCare Practitioner and campus minister, Sarah Denny.

Sarah is dedicating her doctoral research on these issues, while specifically examining the effects hormonal contraception is having of young women’s psychology. In this episode, we talk about the advances in women’s health sciences regarding fertility care, why hormonal birth control should not be considered a panacea to women’s health issues, and the effects it is having on our relationships.

I hope this episode encourages women and men to embrace the beauty and struggles of a woman’s natural fertility rhythms. At the end of the episode, we give you resources for more information on this important topic.

Social media is ruining everything! It is killing our brains and relationships. That is what we hear, and while yes there is truth to that, what if, social media isn’t the problem, per se? What if the problem rests on the lack of charity and virtue within the users themselves? What if the onus was on us to be better, not the technology.

Joining me is social communications expert Dr. Daniella Zsupan-Jerome, professor of pastoral theology and director of lay formation programs at Notre Dame Seminary. She has one of the most clear and nuanced voices on this topic. In this show, we start by examining what communication is in a broader and theological context. We then talk about the good digital media has to offer and reasons for the “troll” (negative) culture found on the internet. We look at the Catholic Church scandals of 2002 and 2018 and talk about how the rise of digital media in that 16-year span has influenced the nature of the conversations had by the laity.

This episode is reminder to me and everyone who listens, that we are called to love and charity of our neighbors in all places…even digital ones.

Millennials are not as involved in religious traditions as previous generations. This is undeniable. Yet, rather than being intimated by this, let’s see it as an opportunity. Instead of feeling the pressure to change Church teachings or come up with some new gimmick to make the faith more hip, how about we just to get back to the basics, encourage prayer and a relationship with Jesus?

These are the thoughts proposed by today’s guest, Fr Josh Johnson, a priest of the Diocese of Baton Rouge, LA. He is popular speaker, podcaster, and has just released his first book, “Broken and Blessed: An Invitation to My Generation.” Yes, he is a busy guy. And a millennial priest! He loves speaking to his generation of believers. In this episode, we talk about possible reasons for the sharp decline in religious affiliation among millennials, the importance of encouraging prayer as the first step for evangelization, listening and responding to the messages of the culture, and we end briefly discussing how our Churches are affected by racism.

Let’s admit it, trying to have faith can at times be challenging. I love God, but sometimes I doubt: his goodness, his providence, his presence. This episode is about knowing what to do with those doubts when they arise. Ignoring, stuffing, or pretending they will go away are not the best options.

Joining me today is Chris O’Neil, part-time family life minister for the Archdiocese of New Orleans, full-time husband and father, and theologian extraordinaire. Chris is a longtime friend and the inception of this podcast emerged after many conversations we have had over the years on this topic. He shares from his deep theological knowledge but also his personal experiences with these questions.

We take a deep dive into trying to make sense of those moments in life, examine the difference between involuntary and voluntary doubt, discuss the role of doubt as aid to growing our faith, and explore how the challenges in marriage can serve as an analogy to the challenges in our faith life. We end the show by pointing to hope and offer some practical suggestions on how to get through those difficult moments of doubt.

You are not alone in this struggle. We hope the show gives you some guidance on knowing when doubt is healthy and when it is destructive, and what to do during the hard times.

Men and women. Is there anything that causes more heartbreak than this dynamic? But try as we do, we are stuck together and have to figure it out. In this episode, we focus on the male side of this equation and try to determine what it means to be a man in a modern, pluralistic, and gender neutral culture.

Joining me on the podcast today is Dr. Jennifer Miller, professor of Moral Theology at Notre Dame Seminary. Dr. Miller and I had the pleasure of working together during my four years on faculty at NDS. She is an expert on the study of human sexuality; rooting her thought in the minds of the last three popes: John Paull II, Benedict XVI, and Francis. She is a renowned lecturer on these topics and brings a much-needed feminine voice to understanding masculinity.

We discuss the practical and theological importance of understanding the male-female relationship. We talk about modern gender theory, the innate differences of men and women, the gifts and curses of men and women, and why we should look to Jesus as the Model of Masculinity not St. Joseph. (No offense to all the St. Joseph lovers of the world).
