The show for those who love the West and love photographing the icons of the West as well as the backroads and off the road sites. I'll tell you when to go, where to go and what clothes and gear to pack. And I'll have interviews with other photographers who've been there and have the T-shirt.
Welcome to Photographing the West episode #132 and the last one. While I’ve enjoyed every moment of my interviews over the last 6 ½ years, it’s time to move on. To those of you who have stuck around since episode 1, my sincerest thanks. For everyone else, thanks for tuning in. I’ve certainly learned a lot from all these interviews and I hope you have too. For those that want to catch up on one or more episodes, they will be available on www.flanaganfotos.com until July 31 of this year. Finally, a great big thanks to all those photographers who have given of their time and expertise to keep these episodes interesting, educational and entertaining. You have my undying gratitude.
So that’s it! Goodbye and all the best to each and every one of you!

Hello and welcome to the Photographing the West podcast. Everyone’s busy this time of the year, so I decided to take this opportunity to wish everyone Happy Holidays and spend a few minutes talking about Photographing the West in the new year. My tagline has become interviews with interesting people doing interesting things. Some are well-known and some are not. Some are photographers and some are interesting experts in photography related fields. That will not change. One thing that will be new for 2020 is an experiment with video episodes where they are appropriate. In February, I’ll be hosting an episode with Jim Zuckerman demonstrating his techniques for compositing. A topic that cries out for video. Another topic that requires video is depth of field blending and there are certainly others. These video episodes will be occasional because of the difficulty in producing and editing videos and the difficulty in finding people who are willing to be on camera. If it goes over well, I’ll increase the number of videos over time, but the audio format will not go away. So, if you like this change, let me know by email or text at kirby@flanaganfotos.com or text at 330-903-2578.
Secondly, I’m thinking about setting up a Patreon account to help defray the costs of producing Photographing the West. I don’t like ads and would prefer to avoid them, so I want to give this a try first.
Third, I am planning a Yosemite in Spring workshop for early May when the waterfalls are at their peak and most roads are open providing the maximum number of photo ops. Yosemite is one of my favorite spots to photograph. A maximum of 10 spots will be available. We’ll photograph the icons, but also visit lesser known locations. Details will be available in mid-January.
Finally, I’ll once again be speaking at the Chico Snow Goose Festival in Chico, California January 23-27, 2020. So, if you’re in the area, stop by and say hi.
With that, I’ll wish you a Happy New Year and best of everything in 2020. Bye for now and we’ll talk again on January 15, 2020.

Each subject is a unique individual that is photographed in detail worthy of a macro photograph. And each of his portraits tells a story about his subjects. Brad is a well-known British Columbia based wildlife photographer famous for his bear photography in particular, his workshops and his gear reviews known for their depth and lack of bias. In this episode, Brad and I focus on the new Nikon gear just out including the Z7, the wonderful but expensive Nikon 180-400 mm lens and the Nikon 500 mm f/4 PF lens. Brad has extensively tested the Z7 and shares his findings. We discuss the 180-400 briefly, but there is an extremely extensive review on his website www.naturalart.ca Both of us have the 500 PF on order, but neither of us has received one yet. So, our discussion is limited to the known specs and the observations of others but is nevertheless pretty extensive. We’ll come back to that lens when we both have one in hand and have had some experience with it.
If you’ve never been to Brad’s website, you’re in for a real treat. The quality of his wildlife images is just breath taking. Not a word I use lightly I assure you. Each photo is accompanied by field notes that explain how he got the shot, his Behind the Camera notes provide metadata for the shot and other technical details and his At the Computer notes describe his post processing. A lot to be learned here.

The park is justifiably famous for its namesake mountains which are some of the most beautiful in the lower 48. They have been photographed by Ansel Adams and millions of other photographers since him. But there’s more to the park than mountains, there’s the Snake River that runs through it North to South at the base of the mountains and there are multiple lakes large and small. Some well-known like Jackson Lake and Jenny Lake and lesser known lakes like aptly named Two Ocean Lake named for draining into the Atlantic as well as the Pacific oceans. The Teton’s are well known for their landscape photography locations like Schwabacher’s Landing, the Snake River Overlook and the Mormon Barns, it’s becoming increasingly well known for its wildlife photo ops. So, today I’ll talk about both as well as how to get here, where to stay and best times of year to be here.

David Brinker is a wildlife ecologist for the State of Maryland and in his spare time is co-founder and co-director of Project SNOWstorm along with Scott Weidensaul. With a staff of 40 some volunteers they capture, study and apply cell phone based transmitters to Snowy Owls along the East Coast and in the Midwest. Financed entirely by donations they have acquired incredible research data on the winter migratory patterns of the owls. The project also supports veterinarians who perform necropsies, biologic and toxicologic studies on dead owls. Thee data collected by the project has provided new and exciting information about Snowy Owls.

I like to interview interesting people for my Photographing the West podcast and Harry Fuller certainly is one. During a career in journalism, he lost interest in baseball and took up birding instead. After moving to San Francisco, he rapidly advanced from beginning birder to expert birder and began to write about birds. In the process of moving from San Francisco to Ashland, Oregon, he discovered many birding hot spots along I-5 and went on to write a book about them and other birding spots between San Francisco and Seattle. His second book describes his adventures in finding and documenting the Great Gray Owl in California, Oregon and Washington. Finally, his just published third book describes the natural history of San Francisco from pre-Columbian times to the present.
Harry's journalistic training and experience lead him to do a deep dive into any subject that interests him. You won't regret purchasing any of his books:
