In this episode of Through the Word, we see that when Jesus encountered the two disciples on the Emmaus road, He revealed to them that all of Scripture is about Him, and the passion this news stirred within them prompted them to action: telling others they had met the resurrected Savior.

How easy it is to forget that Jesus has made a way for us to sit at His feet in intimate fellowship with the Triune God in prayer. Jesus took the time to outline exactly what prayer is and how we ought to pray, giving us a model of prayer that we can adapt for ourselves. Through prayer, we are able to speak to our Father in heaven because of the Holy Spirit’s and Jesus the Son’s mediating work. We pray to ask Him for what we need and long for, yes, but we also pray to commune with Him. In this session, we’ll discuss how Jesus taught us to pray and we’ll reflect on the amazing gift of communication that prayer is for the saints.

The Son of God came into the world as a lowly baby, born of the young virgin Mary. This tiny bundle of joy, both fully man and fully God, left the glory of heaven in order to rescue His people from their sins. God’s people had been waiting for centuries for their promised King. As they were on the lookout for a powerful deliverer to arrive on the scene, the humble servant Jesus quietly descended to earth in a way no one expected. The promised Messiah had appeared, though His arrival took shape in such a quiet, meek way that most did not recognize it. In this session, we will take a look at just a few of the truths surrounding Christ’s birth that point to His coming to earth to bring majestic rescue to His precious people.

In this session we get a tiny peek into the great purpose and incredible planning of God. Through a barren couple, God brought forth John, who would spend his life preparing for and proclaiming the arrival of the Messiah. The story of John displays truths found in Psalm 139:13-14 and Ephesians 2:10, namely, that we are fearfully and wonderfully made for a great purpose that God prepared for us long ago. God has hand-woven each of us in the womb so that our individual lives and work would point to the truth and the glory of the gospel.

In the beginning of Nehemiah’s memoirs, we see God’s kindness in raising up the right leaders for the task of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. In this session, we will see how the hearts of His people would be stirred through gathering to hear the word of God, confess sin, and commit to obedience as an expression of a sincere relationship. Consequently, we get a picture of God’s primary way of working in and through His people to accomplish the work He would have for them, namely, through the preaching of God’s Word as the people of God gather to worship.

In this session, we are going to look at God’s declaration to His people regarding the rebuilding of the temple. The small second temple was but a foretaste of the ultimate temple that God would offer to His children—the Messiah. Across the Old Testament, God was working among His people to prepare them for the Messiah, and neither their stumbling nor the furious opposition of His enemies could thwart His plans. His purposes would be accomplished. This coming Temple would be far superior to the temple they were rebuilding, and even the first temple that Solomon built. The Messiah would provide a sacrifice that would end all sacrifices. His work would not be easy, but He would accomplish it, and we will be saved because of it.

In this session we will consider how God’s promise of His presence is a primary motivator to obedience. Too often we think of obedience in the Christian life as perfunctory behavior that seems mundane. This text reminds us that obedience is the natural response to the presence of God, and the presence of God in the people’s rebuilding of the temple in Haggai points forward to the ultimate act of God’s presence being known in the coming of Jesus. This Old Testament book will prove relevant to us as we realize that we are living out the same promise and commitment as the Israelites did in the context of Haggai.

In this session we will walk with Israel as they are brought out of Babylonian exile and returned to their homeland. We will see that God is both faithful to keep His promises and that He delights in His children. We will also see that God’s activity on our behalf frees us to worship Him. It is in experiencing God and His work to secure our freedom that we see ourselves for who we really are, see Him for who He really is, and our lives can overflow in authentic worship and celebration of God.

In the Book of Obadiah, we find a warning that God remembers sin and that a day is coming when He will judge the world. In this session, we will see that even as God judges sin, He makes a way for the deliverance of His people through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, whereby He no longer holds our sin against us. Because we have received God’s grace and mercy by faith in Jesus, we are to have compassion and concern for the oppressed and distressed in our culture as we share the gospel with them and even with those who take advantage of them.

Daniel 7 marks an important shift away from the biographical material found in the first six chapters in order to present some prophetic messages. Because God’s people (the Jews) were in Babylonian exile, this chapter provided immediate hope to a discouraged population. The promises found within these verses, however, are just as comforting in the present as they were in their original context. In this session, we will learn that unlike the temporary kingdoms of this earth, Jesus Christ will reign eternally over the kingdom of God. By forecasting the unrivaled strength of the coming Messiah, Daniel gives us a glimpse into the conclusion of God’s plan for the universe.

Across the centuries of the Old Testament, God made promises to restore humanity through the Messiah from Israel. But the Old Testament ends with lots of God’s promises unfulfilled. In Matthew 1:18-25, we see Jesus as the continuation and fulfillment of God’s rescue mission to the world. Conceived through the Holy Spirit and born to a virgin, Jesus is unlike any other human being. He is fully God and fully man, and He came to save people from their sin. The events surrounding His birth fulfill Old Testament prophecy and show us that Jesus is, in fact, the promised Christ, Immanuel, God with us. And just as He used Joseph, God desires to use our faith-driven obedience to fulfill His promises of salvation and restoration.

After watching Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walk out of the fiery furnace, Nebuchadnezzar again boasted of his self-importance, inviting the judgment of God. Remarkably, his most offensive expressions of pride followed his giving lip service to the supremacy of our God, which highlights the deceptive nature of a false humility. This session warns us about the dangers of pride while also helping us appreciate God’s willingness to humble the proud.

Though leaders come and go, God remains. This session extols God’s unlimited power and goodness while reminding us that our faith glorifies His name. Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, along with Daniel, grew in their commitment to Yahweh despite their harsh surroundings (1:8-21). After Daniel interpreted King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream (2:31-45), these men oversaw Babylonian affairs under the names Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. When commanded to worship the king’s golden image, these faithful servants refused. Through their unwavering resolve, we learn that our God is always with us and that He glories in our faith.

As the nation of Israel lay in ruins, its homeland plundered and many people either dead or scattered, God spoke a word of hope through His prophet. Ezekiel, an exile in Babylon, received a vision in which he witnessed a valley covered with dry bones. He spoke God’s words to the bones, and as he did, the bones took on flesh and the Spirit breathed new life into the corpses. The imagery of this dramatic vision pointed to Israel’s future hope as they would experience physical and spiritual restoration under one King from the line of David. We are reminded by the vision of God’s mercy toward the undeserving, His desire for unity among His people, and His plan to bring complete restoration to all believers through Jesus Christ.

God is a God of mercy and patience, but when His word is continually rejected, judgment is certain. In the closing chapter of 2 Chronicles, Judah finally suffered the consequences of her idolatrous actions. God’s prophets had warned the kings of Judah to repent, but their compassionate appeals fell upon deaf ears. This rejection of God’s prophets and His word resulted in hardened hearts, outright rebellion, and God’s punishment. Yet as Judah ultimately discovered, God administers discipline as a means of grace in hopes of restoration. We too should understand God’s discipline as an act of compassion. For those who repent of their rebellion against God, there is a promise of mercy and future hope.

Habakkuk is a remarkable book that records the dialogue between a confused yet trusting prophet and his God. Habakkuk ministered to Judah in a time when evil thrived. The flourishing evil both surrounding and within Judah led him to ask candid questions that the suffering people of his day were asking: Why do the wicked prosper? Why does God not answer the prayers of the righteous? How can God remain strangely silent? In this session, we will see the Lord responded to Habakkuk’s questions by reminding the prophet of His power and authority over all things. The overarching truth of the book is that God’s people can live with faith and joy even during challenging and confusing times.

The Israelites had a sin problem resulting in a vicious cycle they couldn’t self-correct. The old covenant provided an external law system that allowed a righteous God to be in relationship with His unrighteous people. But the people’s sin remained a hindrance to their faithfulness and worship. Something needed to change. In this session, we will look at Jeremiah 31:31-40, which foretells of a new covenant and projects a future in which God’s righteous judgment against sinners is satisfied by His sovereign work of redemption through Jesus. Now we live by faith in Jesus for our redemption and are empowered by the Holy Spirit to obey God’s commands and live on mission for Him.

The kingdom of Judah had been led into sin and rebellion by her unfaithful kings. The book of the Law had been lost, and the people had become idol-worshipers. But young King Josiah sought to honor God, so we see him on a great adventure of destroying idols throughout the land. Yet when Josiah came face to face with the holiness of God revealed through the accidental discovery of God’s word, he repented and led his people to do the same. After Josiah’s repentance, he restored the worship of God and greatly influenced his culture. Josiah found his purpose in the worship of God through his repentance. This is the key to discovering our purpose as well. It’s through the darkness of repentance that we begin to live fully in the light.

In the previous unit, we explored why God would judge the sins of His people. In this session, we will examine how God showed mercy to us by transferring our sins to His Son, the Suffering Servant. Though people often look for a Savior who is a bold, charismatic leader, the Servant—Jesus—came to serve the least of these and ultimately redeem us by His blood. It is in living by faith in His sacrifice for us, following His example, that we will find a life of satisfaction and fulfillment.

Israel was a nation that had received many beautiful promises from God, but God had also promised that if they forgot Him and went after false gods and became like the other nations, there would be consequences. In accordance with His character and glory, God always keeps His promises, both those of blessing and those of judgment. In this session, we will see the consequences of Israel’s idolatry. Though God had been good to them and warned them about their evil ways, they still persisted in their sin. Israel had seen God’s glory through His blessings, and now they would see it in His judgment.

With great power, God delivered the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, led them for forty years through the wilderness, and then finally enabled them to conquer the land of Canaan—filled with people mightier than themselves—so that they could live there. Though it seems most logical that people who had been the recipients of these great gifts would have endured in praise of the One who gave them, sin never follows logic. The hearts of the people turned away from their faithful God and went to pursue others gods, other nations, other created things. By His grace, God endured Israel leaning on their idols, which inevitably collapsed beneath them, and invited them to turn and run back to His loving embrace.

The covenant that God made with Abraham had the nations in mind, not just Israel (Gen. 12:3). The story of the prophet Jonah reveals the heartbeat of God for rebellious people, both those within the nation of Israel, who had received His law and promises, and also those who had not heard of Him and were engaged in idolatry and great evil. God pursues the hearts of people from all tribes, tongues, and nations, and He delights to use His people—His sinful, rebellious, yet redeemed people—to do it. In His perfect will, God uses former rebels to pursue present rebels.

In the course of Elisha’s ministry, the king of Syria, to the northeast, decided to wage war against Israel. But by God’s grace, the Lord protected Israel through Elisha’s counsel. And in response to the Syrian army’s attempt to end his counsel, he demonstrated spiritual wisdom, the effectiveness of his prayers, and kindness toward his enemies. Through Elisha’s ministry, the Lord opened eyes, protected His people, displayed extraordinary kindness, and crushed the pride of the Syrians. Though all humanity has displayed constant rebellion against God, He nevertheless has shown great mercy and grace in crushing pride that stony hearts would soften and turn to Him in repentance and faith.

In the previous session, we read of Elijah’s call to anoint Elisha as a prophet in Elijah’s place. In this session, we find Elijah fulfilling this call. Elisha takes up the prophetic mantle in the spirit of Elijah. The story begins at the end of 1 Kings 19 but continues into 2 Kings and is an important story for connecting the whole story of Kings with the rest of Scripture. Eventually, the One greater than Elijah and Elisha—Jesus—would come. Our Lord has given us a Great Commission: to make disciples of all nations in the power of the Spirit. Jesus demands immediate obedience and wholehearted allegiance. Elisha was asked to follow a prophet, but we have been called to follow the Son of God.

After his initial meeting with King Ahab, in which he declared a drought over Israel, Elijah appeared before Ahab again in 1 Kings 18. In this meeting, Elijah arranged one of the most memorable showdowns in Scripture—a firefight on Mount Carmel between Elijah and the false prophets of Baal to prove once and for all who is the real God. This boldness contrasts sharply with what we find in 1 Kings 19: the mighty Elijah melted with despair. Here God showed Himself not only to be mighty but also merciful as He strengthened His servant in some very particular ways. This portion of 1–2 Kings encourages us in knowing our God is the living God and the loving God.

During the time when the nation of Israel was divided politically into two nations, Judah and Israel, these nations were also divided spiritually, worshiping idols instead of the one true God. So the Lord raised up prophets to speak His truth to His people and to call them to repentance. One such prophet was Elijah, whose name meant “My God is Yahweh.” He spoke on behalf of God, performed miracles in God’s power, confronted rebellious kings, and challenged the people to worship only the Lord. Though he was a human being like us, he performed many great wonders and provided the template for the one who would precede the coming Messiah, to whom he also pointed through his faithful and miraculous ministry.

The death of Solomon marked the end of Israel’s Golden Age, the United Kingdom under Saul, David, and Solomon (circa 1050-930 BC). Soon after Solomon’s death, the kingdom of Israel was torn in two. Judah and part of Benjamin formed the nation of Judah in the south while the remaining tribes in the north kept the name Israel. While on the surface it might seem as though Israel divided because Solomon’s son Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders, the seeds of the split were sown long before that during Solomon’s reign. Compromise led to sin, and sin brought consequences that were felt for generations after. But even though God’s people were unfaithful to Him, we will see that God was never unfaithful to them. God had told David that there would always be a son of David on the throne. And because of Jesus, that is a promise kept.

View Details

Having seen the beginning of Solomon’s reign and his frame of mind later in life, we will now jump back to the high point of Solomon’s reign: the construction of the Lord’s temple. We will see that in building the temple, Solomon didn’t merely construct a building. In 1 Kings 6:12-13, God vowed to fulfill His promise to David and to live among the Israelites and not abandon them. So the temple represented the establishment of Jerusalem as the center of Israel’s worship, the immediate fulfillment of God’s promise to David, and the penultimate fulfillment of God’s promise to bring the children of Abraham into the promised land. After four centuries, the portable tabernacle was finally replaced with a permanent temple.

Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived (1 Kings 3:12), wrote three Old Testament books of wisdom: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. The latter is a celebration of love in marriage, and the former has the feel of a father passing on his collected wisdom to his son. But Ecclesiastes is different; it feels like a bitter old man expressing regret over a wasted life. In this session, we will see that while Ecclesiastes seems to have more in common with existentialist philosophy than with Judeo-Christian Scripture, the book absolutely belongs in the Bible. We will see that more than any other book, Ecclesiastes helps us understand the limits of human wisdom and shows us the futility of pursuing the things of the world.

In this session we meet Solomon, the third and final king of Israel’s golden age as a united kingdom. In 2 Samuel 7:11-13, God promised to establish an eternal kingdom through King David and his descendants. The life of Solomon shows God making good on that promise. We will see that Solomon began his reign with the humble acknowledgment that he didn’t know how to do what he had been called on to do. So he asked God for wisdom (see Jas. 1:5). God is all-knowing; He is the source of all wisdom. The pattern for obedience we learn from Solomon is simple yet profound: We ask for wisdom; God provides wisdom; and we exercise that wisdom. When we make decisions according to God’s wisdom, the world stands in awe.

In this final session from the life of King David, we turn our attention to one of his most famous writings: Psalm 23. This psalm is beloved for many reasons, and countless believers throughout history have been both challenged and comforted by its words. But more than that, in Psalm 23, the former shepherd boy turned king points us to a greater Shepherd and King who was to come. In this session, we will see that the Shepherd about whom David wrote would provide for His people, guide His people, and love His people. We will see that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who accomplished all of this by laying down His life so that He might provide eternal life for us.

On our own, none of us has the power to resist sin, let alone overcome it. In this session, we will see this truth tragically displayed through the life of King David. David had made great progress as Israel’s king. He had demonstrated wisdom and kindness in his reign. However, even this great king was not immune to temptation and to sin, so he too was in need of divine mercy and forgiveness. Like David, we are subject to sin and in need of a better king, the perfect King who is without sin and who grants us mercy and forgiveness when we cry out in confession and repentance.

In this session, we will see David, who has been given rest from his enemies, turn his attention to the internal affairs of his kingdom. This, in and of itself, was not surprising, but one of his acts was quite startling. Years before, David had promised Jonathan (1 Sam. 20) and Saul (1 Sam. 24) that he would not cut off their family’s descendants but that he would show them kindness instead. We will see David make good on that promise by extending kindness to Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth. And in this account, we will see a picture of a greater act of kindness from a greater King: God adopting us into His family through faith in Jesus and giving us a place at His table.

After David became king and God gave him rest from his enemies, David considered why the ark was in a tent while he was in a palace. In this session, we will see God deny David’s plan to build the temple and instead promise to give David, and Israel, blessings that would extend beyond this life into the next. God was showing David that He would remain faithful to His promises, despite the frequent faithlessness of His people. We will see that these promises also come to us who believe in the greater David, Jesus Christ. In Christ all the promises of God find their yes (2 Cor. 1:20). Therefore, we have hope beyond this life, and if we keep our eyes on the future God has for us, we can endure to the end.

David, the young shepherd boy, had squared off against the fierce giant named Goliath and, through the Lord’s power, defeated him and won the victory for the Israelites. It wasn’t long before Israel’s hero became King Saul’s nemesis. When Saul heard the people praising David, jealousy began consuming his heart, leading to multiple attempts to kill David. As a result, David feared for his life and fled to the wilderness. In this session, we will see David’s character on display as he, a fugitive, refused to take an opportunity to eliminate his rival. At the same time, we’ll see how this story points us to Jesus, who loved His enemies in even greater ways than David, to the point of dying for them.

When Samuel’s career as prophet and judge was winding down, the people of Israel demanded that Samuel appoint them a king so they could be like the nations around them. God warned them of the foolishness of this demand and gave them over to the consequences of their request, consequences that did not take long to manifest under King Saul’s failed reign. In this session, we will look at David and see how he became the second king of Israel. In David we see the kind of king that God desires while also catching a glimpse of the future King God would one day provide. David won the battle over Goliath, one of the most dangerous enemies Israel ever faced, but Jesus, our perfect King, won the ultimate victory in His battle with sin and death.

View Details

In this session, we will see the Israelites ask for a king to judge them and lead them in their battles against the nations around them. They believed a human king would do better than Samuel and his sons to protect them from their enemies. But in rejecting the leadership of Samuel, they were actually rejecting the kingship of the Lord. The king they would get would fail to be one devoted to God’s own heart. Instead, he would fail to trust the Lord for provision and protection and he would fail to obey the Lord’s word. The people got whom they wanted, but who they wanted didn’t measure up.

In this session, we will see the prophesied punishment on Eli’s family become reality. Because of the sin of Eli’s sons, the Israelites faltered in their battle with their enemies, the Philistines. In an effort to turn the battle in their favor, the Israelites looked to the symbol of God presence, but they didn’t look to the God behind the symbol. This led to a crushing defeat and the departure of God’s glory. When God brought His glory back home, the people responded with joy and worship, but they also forgot God’s holiness and suffered the consequences. God’s holiness must be respected as it drives us to repentance.

In this session, we encounter Hannah, a woman in a  difficult position with no hope in sight. When she came to her breaking point,  she chose to go to the only One who could help her in the midst of her pain.  The Lord responded and blessed her with a son who would one day become a great  prophet for the Lord. He was cause for worshiping God, and he was called to  share God’s word in a ministry that pointed forward to the great Prophet to  come—Jesus Christ.

In the previous session we saw God humiliate the proud in Samson, and in the Philistines. Once again God used the weaknesses of His people to reveal His true strength. In this session we turn our attention to the story of Ruth, a Moabite woman who lived during the period of the judges. Here we will see how God loves and cares for the humble, the needy, and the lonely. God wanted to make His matchless love known to Ruth, and God continues to want to make His redeeming love known to every tribe, language, and nation. No matter how hopeless and desperate the situation may be, the Lord’s redeeming love is ever-present and stronger still.

God had used Deborah, Barak, and Jael to give the Israelites victory over the Canaanites and peace and rest in the land for forty years. But once more, the Israelites would do what was evil in the sight of the Lord. This time God would hand His people over to the Midianites, who would oppress them for seven years to such a degree that they would resort to hiding in caves. In this session, we will see God’s patient lovingkindness once more as He responded to the desperate cries of His people. He would provide Gideon, another unlikely judge, to rescue His people and turn them back to Him. Through Gideon, we will see that God uses our weaknesses to shine the light of His glory.

The era of the judges began with God providing Othniel to deliver Israel and give God’s people peace for forty years, followed by Ehud and Shamgar delivering the people (Judg. 3:7-31). In this session we will find that the Israelites were once again under God’s discipline because they had done what was evil in the Lord’s sight. This time, God used King Jabin of Canaan, along with his commander, Sisera, to oppress His people. But once again we will see the pattern unfold of the people crying out for relief and God providing a deliverer, although this time the deliverer would be someone the Israelites may not have expected. We will see that God gives His people gifts and works through them so that He might receive glory.

The Israelites knew the names well: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua. The stories of these men and God’s miraculous ways and mighty hand had shaped their identity and their history. But the identity and history of a person’s parents, grandparents, and beyond does not take the place of individual faith and obedience. In this session, we will see that the children of Israel had conquered the promised land, but they had not conquered their own sin and rebellion against God, the One who had given them the victory. The opening chapters of the Book of Judges reveal a cycle of sin that would plague God’s people for generations. God had been faithful to His promises, and He would remain faithful, even when His people were unfaithful.

Easter is the most important day in history, the pinnacle of God’s plan to redeem people from sin through Jesus Christ. In this session, we will explore the resurrection of Jesus from Matthew’s account. Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion, and death prompted great fear in His disciples, but we will see that when they encountered the risen Christ, that fear gave way to belief, joy, and obedience. The resurrection of Jesus offers the same to us today.

In the previous session, the Israelites began their campaign to conquer the promised land with a victory over the fortified city of Jericho. We saw that God provided the victory and how Rahab was spared and brought into the people of God. Next, the Israelites suffered defeat at the city of Ai because they failed to follow God’s instructions, but then they were given victory over that same city after they repented. In this session, we will see that Israel had learned an important lesson: Victory was theirs if they obeyed God, but defeat was certain if they relied upon themselves.

The Israelites prepared for their conquest of the promised land, and first up was the fortified city of Jericho. In this session, we will see that word of God’s works and power had gone before the Israelites, and the people of Jericho were terrified. Yet that did not prevent everyone in the city from retreating behind their city walls, hoping they could hold out against the advancing Israelites, everyone except for a woman named Rahab. We will see that Rahab alone among the people of Jericho believed that God would be victorious and appealed to Him and His people for an act of kindness: to spare her and her family from the coming destruction.

Forty years earlier, the Israelites had failed to trust God and refused to enter into the promised land God had given them. Because of their faithlessness, God forced that generation to wander in the wilderness until all of them, except Joshua and Caleb, had died off. Now it was time for the next generation, those who were children or who were born during the wilderness wandering, to enter the land. In this session, we will see that God called on this generation to follow Him in faith, just as He had called the previous generation. And once again, God revealed His presence and power to His people. But this generation would do what their parents and grandparents had failed to do—they trusted the Lord.

In the last session we looked at God’s people failing to trust in His faithfulness to bring them into the land of Canaan. In this session, we will see that the next generation of Israelites, the children of the people who had rejected God’s provision of a land flowing with milk and honey, grumbled and complained about God’s provision for them in the wilderness. We will see once again that God is gracious and merciful, but He also takes rebellion against Him seriously. We will also see that just as God made a way for the Israelites to be saved through the judgment He poured out on them, He has made a way for us to be saved from the ultimate consequence of our rebellion, which is eternal separation from Him.

As we have looked into the lives of the Israelites, how God delivered them from slavery in Egypt, provided for them in the wilderness, and brought them to the promised land, we have seen God’s patience and faithfulness over and over again. In this session, we will see that the Israelites’ failure to trust God and enter into the land He was giving them was not a small misstep but outright rebellion against Him. We will also see that Israel was not alone in their rebellion. We too have rebelled against God. God created us for His glory, but we all fall short of His glory, and the consequence of our sin is death.

The Book of Exodus describes how sinful people were rescued and reconciled to holy God through a deliverer He Himself sent. Now in this session, we turn our attention to the Book of Leviticus and see that God provided a high priest for His people. Year after year, this representative brought a sacrifice to atone for the sins of the people. We will see that God appointed the Day of Atonement as a way for the people of Israel to be in relationship with Him and as a picture of a better way to come—a way that sin would be dealt with once and for all when the perfect high priest and sinless substitute would take our place and pay the punishment our sin deserved.

In this session, we will trace the construction of the tabernacle, God’s place of dwelling among His people. We will see that God provided the resources for the tabernacle and moved the hearts of His people to obey the instructions He had given them through Moses. Then we will see that when their work was done and completed according to God’s plan, God came to dwell with His people. However, we will also see that God had a better way to dwell with His people—a way that was realized in the person of Jesus Christ.

Moses had left the Israelites at the base of Mount Sinai and had gone to speak with God. But while Moses was receiving the law, the people were in rebellion, calling on Aaron to fashion a golden calf to fulfill their desire to worship something tangible. In this session, we will see what the heart of idol worship looks like and God’s rightful response to it—judgment. But once again, as we have seen so often throughout Exodus, we will see that God offers grace in the midst of His people’s disobedience.

God had delivered His people out of bondage in Egypt. In this session, we will see another act of God’s grace that was easy for the Israelites to miss and easy for us to miss today as well: the giving of the law. The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt, following their masters and their masters’ laws. But now they were free, and the people needed to know how to live as a people to bring God glory and get along with one another. This was God’s intention with the law, evidenced in the Ten Commandments. In this session, we will see God’s purpose for giving the law and our inability to keep the law, even a single commandment. But we will also see that God had a different plan—a better plan—for our obedience.

Despite God’s deliverance and provision, the people of God continued to struggle with turning from their fears to trusting in God. As a result, they repeatedly grumbled to Moses and God. In this session, we will see that they not only had issues with their leader and their God, they also disputed with one another. Up to this point in their journey, Moses had been the sole judge for all of the people. But when Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, met with Moses, he gave the overwhelmed leader some much-needed wisdom and proved himself to be a wise leader in blessing the people of God.

God had delivered His people out of slavery in Egypt through His powerful works. But in this session, we will see that the people forgot what they had seen, they lost sight of God’s power, and they doubted and grumbled when they became hungry in the wilderness. We will see that we are not much different from the people of Israel: We too are prone to forget the promises of God; we are prone to wander from the Lord, even when He has proven Himself to be good and faithful. We will learn of God’s great faithfulness despite our faithlessness and why He allows His children to go through trials and tribulations.

In this session, we will look on as Moses confronts Pharaoh as part of God’s mission to deliver the people of Israel from Egyptian bondage. In Pharaoh’s response to Moses, we will learn that we have more in common with him than we might care to admit: We too are prone to question the character and authority of God. We will also look at the ten plagues of Egypt, from God turning water into blood to the death of the firstborn sons in the land. We will see that these plagues were not only about God’s judgment but also about God proving Himself to be the one true God, and only His ways lead to life. Finally, we will see in the Passover the goodness of God revealed in a surprising way: through the shedding of blood.
