Witchen Herbal Lore
This visual talk will dive into the lore, chants, and rituals of sacred plants, including Mugwort, Hypericum, Mandrake, Rue, Vervain, Rowan-berry and the Daturas. The Nine Herbs Charm in Old English, the lybbestre (“medicine woman”) and wyrtgaelstre (“herb-chantress”), among other folk names for women healers.
Herbs of the Midsummer garlands and bonfires; on that Eve, sitting under Hyldemoer, Mother of the Elderberry Tree, to watch for the elven procession pass by.
Italian herbalists who healed with flower oils, Bulgarian vrachky healers, Scots and Irish “fairy doctors,” German “measurers,” and Slavic “whisperers.” Herbalists who sing praise songs to the plants in gathering, tell them why they are needed to cure, and sprinkle offerings into the Earth. We’ll touch on healing by chant, touch, whisking, smoking, lustration, curing stones, tying herbs on with knotted yarn, and “pouring wax.”

Octavia Butler’s 1993 dystopian novel “Parable of the Sower” begins in July of 2024. Climate change is turning the globe into a hellscape with droughts, fires and calamitous weather events. Racial and class inequities have soared, women’s rights are under threat, and white nationalism and radical fundamentalism are taking hold.
In the book’s sequel “Parable of the Talents” (published in 1998), a presidential candidate named Jarret, who wants to purge the country of those who don’t share his brand of militant Christianity, issues this call: “Help us to make America great again.”
His opponent, Smith, is right when he calls him out as “a demagogue, a rabble-rouser, and a hypocrite.” But Smith is “such a tired, gray shadow of a man,” that Jarret is “able to scare, divide, and bully people” into electing him and quickly sets about implementing his fascist agenda.

He lives with his partner, Kornelia Grabinska (a Jungian Analyst), in a birch forest overlooking Fairbanks. He has lived and worked in Alaska for more than forty years, and treasures living on the edge of the wilderness. He has traveled and worked throughout the state, and has been the director of four rural mental health centers. For thirty years he worked as a forensic psychologist, seeing folks at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Fairbanks Correctional Center.He and his partner Kornelia have run a bookstore specializing in Jungian books (Silver Tree Books) and a toy store specializing in Jungian sandplay items (Happy Moose Toys.) They have taught numerous Jungian seminars, and helped start the C. G. Jung Society of Northern Alaska over ten years ago. He has been the webmaster for www.jungcurrents.com for many years.

Shambhavi emphasizes direct encounters with the wisdom of the heart through the more explicitly devotional teachings and practices of Trika Shaivism and Dzogchen. At one time, Shambhavi taught at Northwestern University. She left academia in 2004 in order to devote herself to practice, writing and teaching in her spiritual tradition. Directs the Earth Restoration Service Charity, the charity aims to enhance ecological integrity by planting new woodlands around the world. Through which, over a thousand schools across the British Isles have signed up and whose students have planted over two hundred woodlands. In response to the ongoing sixth mass extinction, he was the catalyst behind the Life Cairn movement: memorials for species rendered extinct at human hands. As a storyteller, he works with old myths and fairytales which shine a torchlight on life’s journey; his stories tend to gravitate around the Norse material which have led him to lecture and perform in universities and other educational centres.
He is also a prize-winning author, whose work has been published in magazines such as Resurgence, The Ecologist, Permaculture magazine and in the Dark Mountain series. He is a member of the ‘Forn Sed’ (Old Customs Association) in Sweden which works closely with ancient Norse culture, traditions and spirituality, unearthing old legends, forgotten folklore and endangered Norse languages. Caroline welcomes the return of Karen Gedney, author of “30 years behind bars,” 30 years behind bars as prison physician, mentor, guide, all around culture Doctor…shifting prison paradigm to one of healing and re-integration…
“The last time we talked I’ve become more involved in prison reform and aging well. . Now I”m involved with Return Strong (a non-profit put together by a female union organizer for the families of the incarcerated and the incarcerated). I’m also involved with NPEP, Nevada Prison Education Project (a group trying to get college education into the prison with the Pell grants coming) plus helping Federal Defenders with some death row cases (that’s in mid February). I’m also getting into the world of aging gracefully and gratefully and giving talks on ‘rewire and refire.’ Last month I spoke at a women’s health retreat in Costa Rica, for my 77yr old friend Maria who is a bikini competitor, a personal trainer and now an event planner.
I have to say it’s interesting working with women who are interested in helping society improve, get healthier and become safer.“

Paper: Nutrient Status of San Francisco Bay and Its Management Implications – James E. Cloern & Tara S. Schraga & Erica Nejad & Charles Martin
Synopsis: Paper predicts this algae bloom based upon current levels of nutrients flowing in bay and its sort of a Miracle it hasn’t happened yet, but now we’ve likely passed the tipping point.
“If an aberrant nutrient leak isn’t discovered that kicked this bloom off it means ALL bay are cities / municipalities are going to have to come to the table and lower nutrients into the bay. This likely would be slow, painful, billions of dollars, and the chance of this summer event taking place again becomes high.
