Proclamation! For the Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost Sunday, 6 November 2022
Reverend Shelley McVea takes a deeper look at the way that some people asked questions of Jesus. Not everyone was looking for answers, instead they were looking for ways to trip Jesus up. But Jesus doesn’t not get tripped up. He says that God, “not of the dead, but of the living”.

Proclamation! For the Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost: Sunday, 30 October 2022
Reverend Shelley McVea tells the stories of two different biblical figures: the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk and the tax collector Zacchaeus in the New Testament. Habakkuk cries out against the injustice that he sees around him, and after a time of silence, God answers him. Zacchaeus climbs a sycamore tree to get a glimpse of Jesus, but he gets much more than that. Jesus calls him by name.

Reverend Shelley McVea tackles a most curious parable, that of the dishonest manager. When his boss found out that he was cheating him, he was fired. Proclamation! For the Eight Sunday after Pentecost Sunday, 31 July 2022
Reverend Shelley McVea tells the story of a man who struggles with his family possessions and approaches Jesus for advice on his will. In those days it would not have been unusual for a Rabbi to give advice on family disputes. However, Jesus balks at the question. “Take care,” he advises. Be on your guard against greed. Why? Because the value of one’s life does not consist of having an abundance of possessions.

The season of Lent continues as Reverend Shelley McVea shares with us the hard promise of forgiveness, the transforming path that leads to second chances. Proclamation! For the First Sunday in Lent, Sunday, 6 March 2022
Reverend Shelley McVea shares a secret: She loves Lent. Lent is the season of deprivation, as many Christians choose to give up something they love in order to be in solidarity with Jesus who went into the desert and fasted for 40 days. At the same time, Lent is a time of great promise, the first promise is that of abundance. As in the Old Testament, the Lord rewarded those who wandered in the desert for 40 years with a land of milk and honey.

Proclamation! For the Last Sunday after Epiphany, Sunday, 27 February 2022
On this the last Sunday before the beginning of Lent, Reverend Shelley McVea celebrates the end of the season of epiphany by reflecting on divine experiences that happen high up on the mountain. In those high up places, we read in the scriptures the power of the illumination and how is shines in our spiritual lives.

Proclamation! For the Seventh Sunday after Epiphany, Sunday, 20 February 2022
Reverend Shelley McVea examines Psalm 37 to find insight into what God wants us to do: not to fret, or envy, to trust and do good, to delight in the Lord, to be still and wait patiently, to refrain from anger, and to take refuge while waiting for the Lord.
Psalm 37
Do not fret yourself because of evildoers; *
do not be jealous of those who do wrong.
2 For they shall soon wither like the grass, *
and like the green grass fade away.
3 Put your trust in the Lord and do good; *
dwell in the land and feed on its riches.
4 Take delight in the Lord, *
and he shall give you your heart's desire.
5 Commit your way to the Lord and put your trust in him, *
and he will bring it to pass.
6 He will make your righteousness as clear as the light *
and your just dealing as the noonday.
7 Be still before the Lord *
and wait patiently for him.
8 Do not fret yourself over the one who prospers, *
the one who succeeds in evil schemes.
9 Refrain from anger, leave rage alone; *
do not fret yourself; it leads only to evil.

Proclamation! For the fifth Sunday after Epiphany, Sunday, 6 February 2022
Reverend Shelley McVea continues the “aha” season with the story of Jesus approaching Simon Peter who, after a night of fishing, has caught not a single fish. Astonished by Jesus, Simon Peter cries out, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man.” But Simon Peter’s sins are not a concern for Jesus. Simon Peter, as are we all, is called by God to a new life.

Proclamation! For the fourth Sunday after Epiphany, Sunday, 30 January 2022
It is patient, it is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. It does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
Can you guess what “it” is? Reverend Shelley McVea explores Paul's much-loved message to the Corinthians.

Proclamation! For Sunday, 16 January 2022
Reverend Shelley McVea continues her look at the “Aha” season of Epiphany, by looking at an unlikely “Aha” moment: When Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding. His mother Mary had gone to Jesus nd told him that the hosts had run out of wine. Although Jesus initially seemed to be reluctant to act, his mother knew better. “Do what he tells you to do,” she said to the servers at the wedding.

Proclamation! For Sunday, 2 January 2022
Reverend Shelley McVea leads us through the story of three unusual seekers who arrived in Bethlehem looking for the solution to a mystery that had drawn them on a long journey. Who were they? They came from the east, they rode on camels, and they looked majestic. Perhaps they were astronomers, philosophers, or kings. Their desire to find the truth brought them to the lowly manger where a child was born.

Proclamation! For the Second Sunday of Advent, Sunday, 5 December 2021
Reverend Shelley McVea confronts the clutter of her home as she decorates for Christmas and finds that sometimes we have so much clutter in our homes that we no longer have any room for the manger. Physical clutter, emotional clutter, spiritual clutter; all these things take up space in our hearts. Advent provides us a time to prepare our hearts and make space in our lives for God to enter our hearts anew.

Proclamation! For the twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost, Sunday, 14 November 2021
Interim Priest David Bryant captures a moment in Jesus’ life, as Jesus and his disciples are leaving the temple, they look at the large stones that are the foundation of the temple. Jesus foreshadows the events to come, saying that the stones will be toppled. Reverend David considers the impact of living with uncertainty and the need to prepare ourselves for our own end times, by being prepared for difficult times, enduring hardships, and by not allowing ourselves to be lead astray.

Proclamation! For the fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Sunday, 29 August 2021
In August, while Reverend Shelley McVea enjoys some well-deserved time off, we are featuring a series of guest sermons.
As the summer nears its ending, Rev. Canon David Harrison considers the ways that our minds may well turn to work. One of our readings for this Sunday comes from the Letter of James, in which James calls us to do good works. Yet Martin Luther dismissed this entire letter as a "letter of straw". As Christians, are we called to faith? Or to good works? Or perhaps both?

Postulant Jillian Ruch provides our sermon for today, reflecting on a passage from Mark Chapter 6 verses 30-34, and 53-56.
The apostles had gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. Jesus said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.”
In today's reading we learn about Compassion, Wisdom and Resilience. In managing himself, the Apostles and the crowds that gather, Jesus models for us what it feels like to push through even when we are very tired for the good of His Kingdom.

Proclamation! For the sixth Sunday after Pentecost, Sunday, 4 July 2021
Reverend Shelley McVea compares two quite different kinds of king: King David, the warrior, poet king who unified the twelve tribes of Israel, and David’s descendant, “king” Jesus, who comes as a prophet to his nation, but who was so different from what was expected of a king, that he was not recognized. One king was celebrated and honored, and the other was rejected.

Proclamation! For the fifth Sunday after Pentecost, Sunday, 27 June 2021
Reverend Shelley McVea has a new omelet maker, and that inspires an insight in to her understanding of today’s Gospel from Mark: two stories wrapped in one story: A man begs Jesus to come to heal his daughter who is on the verge of death. A woman knows that if she but touches the hem of Jesus’ clothes, she will be made well.

Proclamation! For the fourth Sunday after Pentecost, Sunday, 20 June 2021
Postulant Jillian Ruch provides us with today’s sermon and extends a warm Happy Father’s Day greeting to our fathers and the fathers among us.
In this sermon, Jillian preaches about faith based on today’s Gospel reading, Mark 4:35-41. Jillian asks us to contemplate: 1) Why is it hard to have faith sometimes? 2) What does the way Jesus ask his disciples about their faith have to do with us? and 3) Why is it important for us to have faith as our foundation moving through the world?
St. Augustine tells us: “Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe”.
Let's learn more about that together!
Proclamation! For the first Sunday in Ordinary Time, Sunday 6 June 2021
Reverend Shelley McVea brings us into “ordinary time” by sharing ‘the most dangerous scripture’, the passage in Mark’s gospel (Chapter 3: 20-35) when Jesus is perceived by some to be mad because he casts out demons. When his mother, brothers and sisters arrive to find him, he challenges the whole notion of what it means to be a family.

Proclamation! For the fourth Sunday after Easter: Sunday, 25 April 2021
“All We, Like Sheep"
Today is "Good Shepherd Sunday" and in this sermon Postulant Jillian Ruch explores the messages found in John, chapter 10, verses 11-18, by asking three questions: 1) Why are we humans always being likened to sheep in the Bible, in the Old and New Testaments? 2) What can we learn about Jesus when He tells us that He is the Good Shepherd and will be the Shepherd of one flock? and 3) How does this help us to understand our relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit as we move through our days here on earth?
Our Good Shepherd will never leave our side, and we, like sheep, need our Good Shepherd to live.

Reverend Shelley McVea leads us in an Easter Sunday cheer of “Hallelujah! Christ is risen, He is risen indeed, Hallelujah!”
Shelley’s sermon for today celebrates the glory of the resurrection by looking closely at the story of Mary Magdalene, who is reluctant to leave the tomb of Jesus. She isn’t ready to let go of her healer and her teacher. She sees a man whom she thinks must be the gardener. This man asks her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

Proclamation! For Good Friday, 2 April 2021
Postulant Jillian Ruch provides us with a sermon today that reflects on three characteristics of God - Selflessness, Obedience and Pure Love. These are found in the Gospel reading for Good Friday: John 18:1-19:42. Today we are present to the grief of Jesus' crucifixion and witness, in the telling of this event, God's selflessness. We see how Jesus modelled true obedience to God's plan, even with his own sacrifice and how God's pure love is shown to us through Jesus' death on the cross. Please listen, but I ask that you try to put yourself in the grief of Good Friday and not skip to the Joy of Easter Sunday.

Proclamation! For Palm Sunday, the sixth Sunday in Lent, Sunday 28 March 2021
Reverend Shelley McVea celebrates the story of Palm Sunday by reading the Gospel of Mark 11:1-11 when Jesus rides on the back of a borrowed donkey, to cheers of “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” What does it mean for a king to make an entrance like this, knowing that he was prepared for the passion that waits for him in the days to come?

Proclamation! For the fifth Sunday in Lent, Sunday 21 March 2021
Have you ever spotted a celebrity? A sports star or a famous actor? In this morning’s gospel some Greeks wish to see Jesus, who has become a celebrity in Jerusalem. But instead of agreeing to see them, Jesus points to the Cross. It is by dying to ourselves that we will find eternal life. We are now entering the deepest part of Lent, pointing ourselves toward Holy Week. And Jesus offers us a profound paradox: the way to true life is by dying to our old ways and living to the new way of God’s upside-down kingdom.
Guest preacher Reverend Canon David Harrison considers the message found in John 12:20-33 when “the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified."

Proclamation! For the fourth Sunday in Lent, Sunday 14 March 2021
Reverend Shelley McVea continues the Lenten journey and our understanding of the gospel of John, by a consideration of one of the most renown phrases in John’s gospel: John 3:14
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."
