This Sunday is the final part of the "The Shepherd in the Shadow." This week, Pastor Brian will discuss how we can move past failure to find the future God wants us to have, even when we seem to have messed it up.
This Sunday is the 4th week in the 5-part sermon series "The Shepherd in the Shadow." This week, Pastor Brian will discuss how to find the light of God in the midst of overwhelming darkness, depressive thoughts, and hopelessness.
This Sunday is the 3rd week in the 5-part sermon series "The Shepherd in the Shadow." This week, Pastor Brian will focus God's grace through our shame.
This Sunday is the 2nd week in the 5-part sermon series "The Shepherd in the Shadow." This week, Pastor Brian will focus on ongoing struggles. Most of us can probably think of something we have struggled with for years to some degree or another.
As Christians we are promised that God will be with us through the valleys of life. Yet many question what does that look like in the real world? Can you really just “pray it away” when you are in the middle of life’s darkest shadows? What about your struggles that no one else can know about?
Throughout November, we will embark on a 5-part message series tackling such questions. Join us as we explore God’s presence and the power of the gospel in the most difficult moments of life.

Luke 15:11-24
. The parable of the prodigal son teaches us about how to have healthy relationships, beginning with God. When we have come spiritually home to be with God, we then have the spiritual power and resources to have strong, growing relationships with family and friends. Let’s minimize the “Me-Life” and maximize the Christ-life!

Genesis 39 . Ever had a moment where life didn’t go the way you expected? How did you react? Often times we face unexpected changes in our lives and respond with frustration, anxiety or bitterness. Joseph faced devastating loss but still chose to honor God and was a blessing to others. What about us?
Luke 15:1-10
. In the parable of the lost sheep and the lost coin, we see the awesome heart of our seeking and saving God for all who have
spiritually strayed from Him. And all of us have strayed away from God and need Jesus. Let’s join God in loving those who
are spiritually disconnected by pursuing them with the Best News of Jesus Christ. The result will be indescribable joy for
Christ-followers here and for everyone in Heaven.

Luke 14:25-35
. In the presence of a large crowd of people, Jesus shares a very challenging message about how we can grow when Jesus is the first priority of our lives. When Jesus is our first priority, we will experience incredible spiritual blessings – even when we encounter opposition in this broken world. Let’s turn it all over to Jesus and finish strong!

Luke 14:15-24
. Jesus invites us to His eternal Kingdom Party! Let’s make sure that we identify and avoid the excuses that could keep us from experiencing God’s incredible blessings. Instead, let’s say “Yes!” to God’s amazing Kingdom Party. These blessings are awesome! Jesus says, “Let’s party!”

Mark 11
.
Have you ever expected one thing, but it turned out completely different from your expectations? We see this happen in Mark 11, when Jesus approached the fig tree. It was supposed to bear fruit, yet it was barren. What about us? When God inspects us, is there visible fruit of faith?

Will you choose the world’s seat or God’s seat? God’s seat leads to a lifestyle of humility, which then results in us reaching out to those who needs to be spiritually fed, those who need to be encouraged, and those who have not yet seen or heard the Gospel. Let’s sit in God’s seat; the blessings are indescribable and eternal!

Luke 12:35-38
.
Yes! Jesus is coming back! We don't know when He will return, but we can get ready and stay ready. Jesus teaches us how to be ready for His return in the parable of the Master who came home after a wedding celebration. When we are ready and excited about Jesus' 2nd coming, we will experience incredible blessings! Let's learn how to get ready and stay ready!

Materialism is a huge spiritual challenge in today’s culture. In this parable, Jesus reminds us about how the “stuff” of life will never bring lasting purpose or meaning in life. Then He reveals the path that will lead to eternal spiritual riches. Let’s run down that path and invest in God’s Kingdom!
Luke 11:5-13
. Right after Jesus gives us the Disciples’ Prayer in the first part of Luke 11, he shares a parable about how we can grow stronger in our prayer lives. Prayer flows naturally from a growing relationship with Jesus, who calls us His friends! And, our intercession needs to include praying for others that never ends. Let’s become the people whom God can trust with His awesome answers to prayer. Keep asking, seeding, and knocking – all for God’s glory!
Luke 10:25-37
. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, a traveler overcomes the excuses people give for refusing to stop and help a struggling neighbor. Let’s reach out in 2022 to those who need a great neighbor in their lives. We will be blessed as we serve as God’s blessing to needy people.
Luke 6:15-16
. A Christian impact player does not have to be well-known and recognized. The three least known disciples of Jesus are powerful examples of how God can use all of us on his team today. Judas (not Iscariot), Simon the Zealot, and James the Less model for us the importance of having a vision for world missions, a properly-directed passion for the Gospel, and to serve and be the voice for the “little guys” of this world. There is a place on the team for you to serve!
Haggai 2:20-23 . As we conclude our time in Haggai, we are called to be ready, righteous, reaching, and rejoicing.
Ruth 1:1-6
.
In the days of no king, every person does what is right in their on eyes. This applies to each of us as we look away from Yahweh for salvation. This compares to our contemporary world amid the political upheaval and social unrest. The question we must answer is are we willing to distance our self from the Christ we love to the charms of a distant call? Ruth gives us a great example of what to do.
Haggai 2:10-19
.
Todays scripture passage concerns the third message that Haggai delivered to the inhabitants of Jerusalem in 520 B.C. In this message, the Lord uses him to prompt the people to move from mere physical activity in response to the command of God to rebuild the temple and now, greater still encourages them to pursue God’s righteousness within their hearts. We will consider Haggai’s two question inquiry, the implication the answers bring, and God’s invitation to respond by “looking within”!
John 20:24-2
. Many people refer to the disciple Thomas as “Doubting Thomas.” While he did have a challenging experience where he had some questions, Thomas is able to move forward with strong faith in Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Let’s apply some of Thomas’s actions in our lives, so that our faith in Christ will grow stronger.
Luke 22:54-60
.
Peter was a strong disciple whom God used in a powerful way. But he also went through some painful spiritual failures, including a stretch of time where he denied that he even knew Jesus. But Peter finished strong! Let’s learn from his example how, with God’s mercy and power, each of us can both minimize our failures and move from failure to victory.
Haggai 1:1-15
1. The Prophet - An ordinary man called to an extraordinary ministry! (v. 1)
2. The Problem - A loss of priorities (v. 2-4)
3. The Puzzle of Correction - Blessing/Curses ( v. 5-6, 9-11)
4. The Plea of God (v. 7-8)
5. The Penitence of The People (v. 12)
6. The Promise of God (v. 13)
7. The Prompting of The Holy Spirit (v. 14-15)
John 1:35-42
. Immediately after Andrew becomes a follower of Christ, he starts inviting others to do the same. Let’s learn how to reach out and share the Best News of the Gospel with people across the room, across the street, and around the world. Until Jesus comes back, we must go!
Haggai 1 . As we embark on a new series from the book of Haggai we are encouraging you to do four things:
Matthew 6:19-21, 24
.
We become faithful stewards when we invest (and not waste!) the resources that God lends us. All of our blessings come from Him! Let’s learn how to take wise investment steps by the ways we live and give with eternity in mind.
John 3:16-18
.
John 3:16 is the most famous verse in all the Bible! Both Christians and non-Christians often are able to quote it from memory. But what does it really express? It expresses the love of God! In this message we consider several characteristics of God’s love ! Don’t allow familiarity to breed contempt in your heart! Being reminded of the height and depth, breadth and width of God’s love is a powerful tool in the life of a Christian.
Matthew 20:20-28 . As is true with most of the disciples, we see some strong spiritual leadership growth in the life of James, especially after Jesus' resurrection. Through James' example, we can follow God's plan for impactful leadership in our home and in the world.
Luke 2:1-7, John 1:1-6
. While there was no place for Jesus in this world, he has gone to Heaven to prepare a place for all who would put their faith and trust in him! If your faith is in Christ be encouraged! If your faith is not yet in Christ make that decision now!
Joshua 1:6-9
.
In 2022 would you just like to survive or are you ready to spiritually thrive? After Joshua goes through a tough loss, the death of his mentor (Moses), God tells him, the Israelites, and us today that He has a powerful plan for our future. Let’s bury those “things” that are holding us back. Let’s read and heed the Bible like never before. And let’s take strong, life-changing steps of faith for Christ!
Matthew 6:33 . As we approach the new year, there are many people who are making resolutions and goals for 2022. What about the Church? We’ve got a mission and the greatest news to share. But it has to start somewhere. Let it start with Matthew 6:33. Seek His Kingdom first.
John 6:5-15
.
Jesus invites us to become both His disciples and disciple-makers. In this process, we can help others identify the multiple ways that God reveals Himself to us. In the miraculous feeding of 5,000 men plus women and children, Jesus teaches Philip and us how we can be God's leaders and difference-makers, even in the midst of challenging circumstances.
Matthew 2:1-6
.
Matthew's Gospel was originally written to a primarily Jewish audience with the purpose of convincing them that Jesus of Nazareth was in fact the Jewish Messiah they had long been awaiting! As considered last week in Matthew 1:18-25, he is the Savior and today we recognize in Matthew 2:1-6 that he is the Shepherd Messiah of whom the Old Testament foretold! Is Jesus your Shepherd?
Luke 9:51-56
.
As John grows closer to Jesus, his love for others becomes stronger. At first, John is known as one of the "Sons of Thunder." In time, God's love begins to shine in and through John. Let's love God and others sacrificially so that others will clearly see that we are Jesus' followers.
Matthew 1:18-25
.
Gather round - our sins have gathered us under the power of sin, death hell and the grave. But God who is rich in mercy has provided a way that we may be rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the glory of his wondrous light! All throughout God's word, he is calling his people to gather round, to assemble, to come together, in a holy assembly – over the Christmas Season let us “Gather Round” Jesus - Savior, Shepherd, Sovereign Sustainer and Supreme Judge. He will save people from their sins by willingly giving himself as the propitiation for our sin!
Luke 17:11-17
.
In the story of Jesus healing the 10 lepers we find the ministry of the master (Jesus) intersecting with the misery of men (the ten lepers) which was a miracle in the making! The ten hopeless men cried out to Jesus for mercy and at least one of them received more than he asked for - Salvation! Have you come to know the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ in your life ? (Next week we will consider “The Fruit of Thanksgiving”)
John 1:43-51
.
Jesus paid Nathanael one of the greatest compliments in the Bible, and it refers to the importance of spiritual integrity. Unfortunately, spiritual authenticity is rare in our culture today, but when it is "lived out," people will see the Gospel of Jesus. Let's look at the picture of Christian integrity and make commitments that we will strive for Christian lifestyle excellence - all for God's glory!
Luke 7:36-50
.
Our culture is filled with “Gratitude Enemies” that seek to discourage us. When Jesus visits Simon the Pharisee in his home, a woman also comes into the home and shows amazing appreciation to Jesus. Let’s learn from her example how we can be more and more thankful to our awesome Savior. As we grow in gratitude to our Lord, awesome blessings will follow!
2 Chronicles 20:1-30
.
God’s promises handles our day to day challenges, fears, and battles. Just as Jehoshaphat prayed and trusted God based on the promises made to the people of God we can also trust that God will and can respond to our prayers of fear and battles in life. God faithfully responds to his promises and prayers of his children.
Exodus 33
.
In Exodus 33, God commands the people of Israel to leave Mt. Sinai and press on toward the Promise Land. But, he also declares that he wouldn’t go with them because they were a stiff-necked people. How often do we live like God isn’t with us when Jesus died to bring us close to Him? Moses shows us two things that help us understand our desire. Show me your ways! Show me your glory! Is that what we want?
John 15
.
Jesus shows us what it looks like to grow deep roots of faith, while also making an impact on others. In John 15, he teaches his followers to abide in him: which means to rest and remain. He supplies all that we need, so instead of striving in our own power to grow our faith, Jesus shows us that He is exactly what we need. Rest in Him!
Exodus 32 . What’s important to you? It tends to show by where you devote your time and by your actions. In Exodus 32, after Moses took a little too long on Mt. Sinai, the Israelites had a moment where they gave their devotion to golden calf. Sounds weird right? If we are honest, sometimes we worship “idols” too. It’s time to lay them down before the Lord, bend our wills to His, and worship the Only One worthy of our worship!
Acts 18:18-28
.
As we go through life, we have two choices. We can spend or invest. The apostle Paul and his teammates show us three simple and powerful ways that we can eternally invest the resources that God has lent us. Let's invest in the Kingdom of God!
Exodus 14
.
Ever felt burdened by a weight of fear or anxiety? The people of Israel felt that full force in Exodus 14 as Pharaoh marched after them. But God was in control, and all they had to do was trust upon him for deliverance. Will you trust, that no matter what happens, God is leading and guiding you towards his plan and purpose for your life?
Acts 18:1-17 . Discouraging times are inevitable for all who live in this broken world. Many faithful believers in the Bible encountered tough times, including the apostle Paul. God reached out to encourage Paul in some powerful, life-changing ways. And our faithful God will do the same for us. Let’s identify God’s incredible plan and live in His encouragement every day!
1 Corinthians 2:1-5 . We can choose to live our lives for so many things, but what are we living for above all else? What is made known most by how we live? Let's make sure Jesus is the legacy we leave.
Psalm 73 . What does it mean to be blessed? Is it just about the temporary, physical things we gain in this world, or is it something deeper? Asaph, the author of Psalm 73, shows us the tension of comparing blessings with others, and fixating on them rather than resting in Gods goodness. Remember that God is your portion and has blessed you beyond comparison in Christ.
Acts 17:1-15 . What does it mean to be a faithful Christ follower? Paul and Silas and their team model this Christian lifestyle for us. If we live out their simple but powerful examples, the results will be great Kingdom growth for us and others whose paths we cross. Let's live with spiritual abandon!
Matthew 24:1-14 . Everyone wants to know the future. The disciples asked about it, Jesus taught about it, and even today you probably considered something about the future. No matter what the future holds, we are standing with Jesus.
2 Corinthians 12 . Have you ever felt overwhelmed by weakness or trial? Remember the words of Paul from 2 Corinthians 12. His grace is enough for you. Rely upon Him. Deny your desire for sin. Walk in obedience!
Matthew 27:1-5
.
Is it possible to learn life lessons from Judas Iscariot? Should we talk about him at all? The answer is “Yes!” We can learn how to avoid making the same mistakes that Judas did. Let’s finish strong!
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 . If we desire to make a Kingdom impact, we need to make sure that we are walking on the right path through life. Jesus tells us that few people are walking on the road that leads to life. Am I following the American Dream or the Gospel Dream? Let's run down the path of the Gospel Dream and experience what happens when we choose to "be the church" and not just "do church."
Paul and Silas are grossly mistreated and imprisoned as they live and share the Gospel. The way that deal with their tough experiences opens some great ministry doors and lives are forever changed. Let's trust God to redeem mistreatments for our growth and His glory!
2 Chronicles 7:14 . It was an awful day on September 11, 2001, but our God is a great Redeemer. We can learn some powerful life lessons about how to grow and go, even in the midst of tragedies like 9/11. Let's use God's spiritual weapons to fight the battle!
Acts 16:11-18 . Let's identify 5 of those freedoms that the Gospel team discovers in Acts 16. John 8:36 says, "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." Let's be free!
Matthew 26:35-40 . Let's make sure that we don't just "go through the motions" as we participate in the Lord's Supper. We have so much to celebrate and do as followers of Jesus. Let's visit with Jesus and his disciples on there evening of Jesus' betrayal and celebrate and stay excited about all that Jesus did for us!
Acts 16:1-10 . We can either live under the control of the world system, or we can be led by the Holy Spirit. Let's choose to be empowered by the Holy Spirit, and our lives will be forever changed. Let's learn from the examples of first century Christ-followers how to be led by the Holy Spirit.

Today we seek to tackle three more stanzas of Psalms 119. Some of the most beautiful passages of the Hebrew Psalms book reside in our three stanzas today. Today’s words are designed to bring you encouragement. Words can help or words can harm. The child of God should know the difference, which is often not found in the truthfulness of the words, but in the right application of them!
Today’s eighth stanza of Psalms 119 begins with the awesome phrase, “the Lord is my portion.” It is such a simple statement of fact that it eludes the attention it deserves. What does it mean to have the Lord as your portion? It means that you have become fully satisfied in God, a relationship that must be maintained through His precious word. It is the very essence of the words of Jesus, who told Satan, “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (KJV) So how does a flesh and blood person “live by the words of God?” Let’s examine further Psalms 119.
Today we will tackle three stanzas in the middle of Psalms 119. These stanzas highlight the necessity of making God’s Word a part of your daily regimen. You have been called to think and live differently than the rest of the world, but how can you accomplish that? The world will not give you that blueprint, but the word will and does!
The three stanzas of Psalms 119 we will look at today are each powerful and unique formulas of prayer and praise. In each the Psalmsist asks for deeper insight into God’s Word, healing from God’s Word, and the wisdom to long for more of God and less of the world. These are beautiful stanzas that mostly come across as the same kind of prayer for help that any of us could and should be praying daily.
Psalms 119 is famous for its uniqueness. It is the longest “chapter” in the Bible and longest collection of praise and teaching in the Psalms Book. It is also an acrostic, with 22 sections arranged alphabetically, with each line of each section starting with that particular letter in the Hebrew alphabet. But what this Psalms is really known for is being the highest exaltation of the divine word of God in Scripture. As we study Psalms 119, let’s us our time as challenge to reconnect to God’s sacred word!
The tiny Psalms 117 followed by Psalms 118 complete the Hallel, which we have been studying since the holidays. These words culminate the high praise of Psalms used by Jews to commemorate their holiest times of worship… and the words Jesus sang in the upper room. In particular today, we see value of the steadfast love of God! Is it possible to be loved in a way that is unconditional, and unending? Yes.
What can we give to God for all that he has done for us? What is our proper response? The Psalmsists answers this question for us in this Hallel Psalms.
Here in the midst of the Hallel, a cry is made for God to be glorified. In fact, the entire Psalms is summed up in its first verse … a prayer that we get out of the way and ensure that God receives all glory due Him. But Psalms 115 is a little extra special, since it is widely believed that it is what Jesus and his disciples sang just before he went out to Gethsemane. The word glory used here means “heavy” or “weighty” and is associated with the idea of honor. In other words, as we measure our choices and what we treasure are we certain all glory is pointed at God.
God has no equal, no rival and no comparison. In the middle of today’s Psalms, a rhetorical question is asked: “Who is like our God?” Wrapped around the question is a set of truths about God that answer the question… no one is like God. He is incomparable. Psalms 113 will inspire your view of God, and when we get our view of God right, praise begins to flow, and the other things in life have a way of finding their proper balance.
Psalms 112 is an anonymously-authored beautiful praise song. It is reminiscent of Psalms 1, in which two very different ways to live are described… the righteous and the wicked. The song itself is a praise directed to God, who alone can make a person righteous. In particular, Psalms 112 is a detailed description of what righteousness is, and how the righteous person will choose to live. The Psalmsist seems to indicate that the only other option is to choose wickedness.
What is a steadfast heart? In this Psalms of David, he offers several “I will” declarations, leaving no doubt about the type of person he intends to be! All of these declarations seem to flow from one place: a steadfast heart. Do you have one? Would you like too?
Psalms 108 is a unique compilation of Psalms 57 and 60… a “re-mix,” if you will, designed to apply old steady truth to a new dilemma in Israel.
Psalms 107 is constructed in a very unique way … it is like a roll call for all of us misfits. It is for those of us who have tried and failed … those of us who never fit in ... those who got lost along the way, those of us who have badly messed up. In other words, this Psalms is for you … Four different sections of the Psalms begin with the word “Some” and in these sections we find various descriptions of how God’s grace is not for the flawless and perfect, but instead for all of us “mess ups” as well!
Psalms 103 is a Psalms of Thanksgiving that starts in the soul of the individual and spreads to all of creation. As we see who God is and what he has done in our lives it compels us to sing his goodness to the ends of the earth.
We do not know by whom or when the 102nd Psalms came to be, but we do know they were in pain. It appears it was personal pain from sin, and national pain from rebellion against God. Psalms 102 is considered one of the seven “penitent” Psalms, along with Psalms 6, 32, 38, 51, 130, and 143. Today in the midst of communion we come with penitence before our God, to acknowledge our sin, it’s consequence, and then to dive deep into God’s mercy and forgiveness.
Psalms 101 has a very interesting tone. The constant use of the phrase “I will” (ten times) creates a sense that the Psalms is a song about commitment. The writer, David, is making pledge after pledge to God. David clearly intends to live a life of integrity. Since integrity is a key way to honor God and proclaim the Gospel, let’s look closely at David’s ancient song on this topic.
Psalms 100 is described as a Psalms for giving thanks. It is actually the only Psalms given this title. Giving anything is difficult, but truly giving thanks can be the difference between a joyful life or a bitter one. Psalms 100 is fun, popular, short and sweet, but it is also deep, encouraging and life-giving! The Psalmsist urges the entire planet to engage in passionate praise of the great merciful God.
Like last week’s Psalms 97 … this week we are again reminded that the Lord reigns. But this reminder seems attached to a completely different idea. God is thoroughly unique from any other force in the universe. Our God reigns, not just because He is mighty, He reigns because He is Holy! It was His holiness that motivated Him to create man, not His might. In other words, He made you to delight in your love and your journey into righteousness, not to manipulate you.
Psalms 97, like the Psalms around it, promotes the awesome power and glory of God. The Psalms begins with a really bold and simple fact … The Lord reigns! The fact that the Lord reigns over the earth is indisputable for the person with eyes and reason, but the condition of living gratefully and willingly under His reign is your choice. The Psalmsist uses Psalms 97 to make a powerful case for gladly accepting the reign of God over not just the Universe, but even your heart!
Psalms 96 may be the most “international” of all the Psalms. There are no fewer than eleven references to the “peoples” and the “nations” and the “world” in these 13 short verses. If a call to worship could be issued globally, this is the Psalms that does it! Thinking internationally is a very biblical thing to do … let’s elaborate.
Psalms 95 is about ownership rights … an odd subject to sing about. What exactly does it mean to “belong” to God … to be the people of His pasture? In a sense, everyone and everything belongs to God, if you believe in His sovereignty. He is the Creator/ Owner of all things, and all things exist by and for Him. But the writer of Psalms 95 is obviously talking about something more intimate and pleasing than mere theology. What does it “mean” to you to belong to Him? How does it make you feel … and how does it change your life? Let’s explore the beauty of belonging with Psalms 95 today.
It can be really hard to be cheerful these days. Our thoughts are often fear based and fretful, full of gloom and despair. We worry and fret over life, and loss and often struggle to find real joy. Increasingly we think of joy only as a place of escape… something that we can find on vacation or at the ballgame, but not in the drudgery of an ordinary day. But the author of Psalms 92 seems to be claiming that he has found a secret to lasting and steady joy. Is it possible to be truly deeply content in mind and satisfied in life? This state of being he connects to God’s goodness. That’s worth a closer look for us today!
Psalms 90 is unique to the Psalter in many ways. It is the only Psalms attributed to Moses, and deals with something that we never want to talk about: death. In this Psalms we will see how small and finite we are compared to God’s everlasting nature. When we think rightly about death, we can truly live.
Psalms 91 is an amazing “wisdom” Psalms about where the wise person turns for refuge in a crazy and terrifying world. It is full of very well know verses of teaching and praise. But do not “miss the forest for the trees.” This ancient song, while popular and poetic, is also fearsome and incredibly important. The person who is wise enough to take shelter in the Lord has created a refuge and fortress for their life that the most terrifying attacks cannot penetrate!
Psalms 86 is a beautiful prayer, and one of the more poignant songs in the Scriptures. What makes Psalms 86 so unique is the raw honesty on display. The songwriter is obviously upset, hurting, discouraged and frustrated. But that’s okay, because he also knows exactly where to turn when in that state of mind. So our Psalms today is a passion filled cry to God for help (a lament), and the result is a huge lesson in humility and obedience!
While God would no doubt prefer that we remain steadfast, He knows we are but “dust,” especially since He formed us. He knows we are prone to wander, and easily distracted. So, to our great delight, it is good to know that God is merciful and gracious to restore and revive His people. This ancient Psalms is a prayer song, pleading with God for the revival of the people, and the renewal of the blessing on the land.
Psalms 84 is one of the truly beloved prayer Psalms, or sometimes called a “lament,” though it is also full of praise and wisdom. But what makes the Psalms so beloved is its subject matter. The Psalms is about the journey every spiritual pilgrim must make through the “Valley of Baka.” There is no known place as the Valley of Baka in Israel, rather the word Baka means weeping or affliction. As we journey through life’s trials in the valley, we long for God’s presence, and refreshing power.
Psalms 81 is an awesome Psalms of Praise. It is an invitation to God’s people to get fired up about their mighty God! The faithful should make some noise, but not the kind of noise we often make, complaints and demands, but instead the sounds of gratitude and worship! How can we be silent in light of His mercies? Yet, Psalms 81 is an indictment against us … not only are we silent about God’s goodness, we are “deaf” to His words. Ultimately Psalms 81 is a divine plea for us to listen to God’s steady, loving direction.
Psalms 78 is an incredible “Historical Psalms,” in the category of the wisdom Psalms, Psalms 78 is the longest of these Psalms and in fact one of the longest “chapters” in the Bible. Imagine how long of a song this would have been … The need for a lengthy message is understandable though, since the ancient song is an attempt to help current and future generations learn from the mistake of previous generations. Psalms 78 is a powerful indictment against unbelief.
Psalms 75 examines a really interesting topic: Justice. It seems like no matter what we try, man is not able or willing to offer justice to man. But it turns out that there is a Higher Court, beyond man’s corruption and failed wisdom… a court ruled by a righteous Judge, who is the Lord God Almighty. Psalms 75 is a bold declaration that God will in the time and manner of HIS choosing, make all things right. And the best way for us to respond to that is to battle our tendency toward pride, and submit to His steady reign and authority!
Psalms 67 is one of the most amazing evangelistic prayers in the Bible. It is usually referred to as a Psalms of blessing. It is a heartfelt plea to God for grace, and an “all in” call to God’s people to spread the Word of God’s goodness.
Psalms 66 is a bold proclamation of God’s life giving greatness. Like a herald who used to precede ancient kings with all sorts of hyperbole … like a publicist throwing out hype and bluster … Psalms 66 is a loud call to worship the God of Life! The ancient Greek church used readings from Psalms 66 on Easter as a resurrection Psalms focused on God’s call to life for all, graciously including the Gentiles too. Because God is great, we live under the obligation to proclaim Him constantly.
Psalms 65 is beautiful, poetic and powerful. It is full of imagery about nature and subtle reminders that the same God who knows how to keeps worlds sustained and fruitful can certainly provide for you! If it really is God who is keeping the earth rotating and the rivers flowing and the crops growing … then what would you owe a God like that? It would be better to ask, what wouldn’t you owe a God like that! Today would you consider offering God the praise due Him?
God loves you! Just let those words filter through the deepest parts of your mind! Since God loves you, imagine the implications of that truth. Your life has purpose and value! Your worship and praise should flow with a laser focus. You will never be truly alone or forsaken. And your life has immeasurable value, because you are a prized possession, a living soul bearing God’s image. These and many other blessings are the result of God’s great love for you!
Psalms 62 is a Psalms of David, and a wisdom Psalms … designed to teach us something valuable about God as we sing over its lyrics. In this case the lesson is clear, we can find true peace and rest in God, all the way to the depths of our soul. But that level of unshakeable peace does not come without certain bedrock beliefs and faithful actions on your part.
This beautiful short Psalms of David is about hope and faith in crisis, but on the deeper level it is really about the sovereignty of God. David, a king when he wrote this song, is requesting that the true King of Kings would offer him refuge in his troubles, answers in his confusion, and perspective in his duties as king. When we realize that in God we have a rock higher than ourselves, then we are ready to try the unthinkable … to trust God with our future, more than we trust our wisdom or our flesh.
Today’s inspiring Psalms 57 is set in a terrifying time in David’s life. He has taken refuge in a cave, on the run from his enemy, then, suddenly his enemy is camped outside the cave. God transformed the moment of terror into a tale of valor and triumph, proving once more to David that God’s love is mighty and His promises sure. If we navigate the cave obediently, God will bring us out into the open for His ultimate glory!
Some Psalms transcend their place in the book, achieving a level of inspiration and affection that sets them apart: Psalms 1, Psalms 23, Psalms 100, Psalms 139, for example. Psalms 51 is among these ancient songs that transcend. The setting of the Psalms is the aftermath of David’s biggest moral failure, his sin with Bathsheba, and the resulting cover-up and tragic outcome. As his world crumbled around him David enters a time of repentance, and Psalms 51 is the song issuing forth. It is painful and powerful and just what we need to hear!
Today we are looking at a majestic Psalms. A Psalms of Asaph, who was one of David’s primary musicians. The majority of the Psalms is in the “voice” of God Himself, and the subject of the Psalms is worship. So if God wrote a song about our worship habits, Psalms 50 is probably what it would look like. Psalms 50 describes a number of ways that we allow our flesh to get in the way of our worship, tendencies that we still struggle against today. Today’s message is meant to encourage us toward a real and vibrant worship life before God.
Psalms 49 is a bit of an obscure wisdom Psalms. It is not particularly famous, and not many songs or great poems have been inspired by its words. But the basic truths of Psalms 49 are as necessary for us as air to breath and water to drink. We have only this one short mortal life to prepare for what comes next. We can prepare wisely, or we can prepare foolishly, or we can fail to prepare all together. Your choice… so make a good one.
Psalms 46 is more famous than most, and a favorite for many. This beautiful little wisdom Psalms is transcendent in scope. It reaches down through the ages with truth and assurance that every generation needs to hear. First, it thrills us, because it is an awe-inspiring declaration of the ever-present help of God! Second, it also served as Martin Luther’s inspiration for the amazing “hymn of the Reformation,” A Mighty Fortress is Our God. Today, God invites us into His “city,” to take refuge and find joy. Come and bask in the safety and delight of being an inhabitant of the mighty fortress of God. A fortress not built by human hands, but built by the power of God and inhabited by the faith of His people! Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia!
The Psalmsist offers one of the most personal and painful songs in the entire book. Psalms 42 is not really a prayer, but it is more like reading someone’s journal when they are going through a hard time. Yet, in the midst of the tears there is so much truth that we can benefit from! When your heart is heavy, turn your longings heavenward!
Our incredible and poetic song today Psalms 39, is about value … in particular the value we place on the precious commodity called “time.” It is a “carpe diem” sort of song that David has written for us to enjoy this morning. How can you make the most of the time you are given? David offers us some brilliant ideas. Seize the moment with deep love for your God and your generation, deep faith in God’s goodness, and deep hope in your amazing future in Christ!
Psalms 37 is our longest Psalms to study so far. This ancient song of David is focused on maintaining a strong, persevering faith in God even when your life feels incredibly unfair. David had a theory… He believed that if he delighted in God and trusted in His plan and pursued His goodness no matter what, He would always come out ahead in the long run!
Today we examine the short and sweet Psalms 36. It is a wisdom Psalms designed to impress upon us the need we all have to plunge in all the way into the deep, deep, love of God. Like a bottomless reservoir of grace, you will never reach the boundaries of God’s great love!
Psalms 34 is quirky and fun. In Hebrew, it is an acrostic with each verse starting with the next letter in the Hebrew alphabet. Lots of little word games are in the Psalms. It is a Psalms attributed to David at a time when he was pretending to be a lunatic to survive his stay in enemy territory. The Psalms is about “hunger” and “satisfaction.” It is about the good and/or toxic things that come out of our mouths, (and since it is 2018 we can also include the good and/or toxic things we type into our devices). Ultimately, Psalms 34 hinges upon a statement recorded in the middle of the Psalms … “Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” (Verse 14) A motto to live by, especially in a dark and conflicted era of time.
Psalms 32 is known for its beauty. It touches our hearts because it is about the power of forgiveness that flows out of confession. The ancient song reminds us that God longs to embrace us in His grace and mercy, but He also demands that we humble ourselves and acknowledge our sin. Every great spiritual movement begins with a season of confession from God’s people … what if we began that movement today?
David declares that he has a basic trust in God that has become a pillar of his life. It allows him to survive the hard times and comforts him as he waits on God to act. Psalms 31 is part prayer and part wisdom Psalms. Last week we talked about how “God is for us!” When we really believe this, trusting God is a lot easier. Do you trust God even when you cannot understand life’s difficulties?
Psalms 30 is a majestic little song of joy out of sorrow, a beam of light that shines out of the darkness of a sad and difficult life. David uses the song to begin to list the reasons why God deserves all glory and honor from us, even when our times are hard. Today we study his list and agree … God deserves our praise regardless of our circumstances.
Our sermons in the Psalms continue this week with a look at Psalms 28. Psalms 28 is a little bit unique in that the first half of the Psalms is a prayer, and the second half of the Psalms is a celebration of the answer to the prayer. If you know what it is like to feel weary, burned out and overwhelmed, Psalms 28 is a good encouragement for you today. If you want to know the power of revitalization in God… this Psalms is for you! God is a source of strength and refuge that you can always rely on. He makes us strong! Super hero strong!
On this communion Sunday we also look at one of those dearly loved Psalms, Psalms 27. It is loved because it is real, raw, and deeply personal. It is one of David’s “wisdom” Psalms, about fear and courage, hope and despair… things we all feel. David in a wisdom Psalms, declares that no matter what life throws at him, he has decided that God is bigger than his enemies and strong enough to overcome his weaknesses!
Psalms 25 is one of the more practical passages in the Old Testament. Like a “how to” manual on life, David asks God to help him take the right path for his life, and then stay on that path without straying. The news gets even better. If you have taken the wrong path a time or two, do not lose hope, the severe mercy of God invites you home as well!
There is nothing else in scripture quite as majestic as Psalms 24. It reminds us of how big and mighty God is! Yet as big and awesome as He is, He desires us to approach Him, to seek Him, and He demands and deserves the adoration and praise of all that He has made. He gets that praise from all parts of creation, except, oftentimes, from humanity.
The best-known section of the Old Testament is our text today. David wrote a song that must have felt like a bit of an autobiography. He knew all about being a shepherd, and was probably a pretty good one. But David seems very well acquainted with a really Good Shepherd! A shepherd so good that he loves, nurtures, protects and guides us through the long days of our lives and then well beyond into eternity! You want to know this Good Shepherd.
Today our focus is Psalms 22. It is a prayer that exposes the agony and the ecstasy of life. The agony – when we feel isolated and far from God; the ecstasy – the joy of knowing God’s favor. Psalms 22 is the most quoted Psalms at the scene of the cross, and if you are feeling battered by life and abandoned by God, this Psalms is for you today.
Psalms 20 is a prayer Psalms written by David, and it's a powerful one at that. David at some point during his reign writes a song that is also a heartfelt prayer for his nation. Psalms 20 is about developing the trust to seek God’s help during troubling times instead of relying only on human power, wisdom and devices. That is what a strong and great nation does!
Psalms 19 is the stuff of poetic legend. Its beauty transcends people of faith with phrases that are well known even in secular culture. But it is more than just a lovely work of art … it is also a powerful declaration. Like a Swiss army knife the Psalms is a shout of praise, a plea for truth and a prayer for protection, all rolled into one ancient song.
Psalms 17 is full of little treasures and familiar phrases. But at its core it is a plea for help from David, as he tries to walk the proper path in life… the righteous path of eternal life vs. the destructive path of a wasted life. David’s little song is a more than a prayer… it is a declaration! He intends to resist the distraction of temporary pursuits.
Psalms 16 is one of the more beautiful prayers recorded in the scriptures, which is really saying something. It is probably so poignant because we can all relate to David’s simple request for help. But what is unique about the prayer is how much of it is focused on praise. David spends twice as much effort praising God in this prayer song as he does asking for stuff ... a good reminder and model for us all.
Today we study a truly beautiful and powerful Psalms of instruction. These uniquely formatted Psalms hold a special place in our heart (Psalms 23 and Psalms 139 and others among our favorites are in the category). This particular Psalms asks, “How should a true worshiper, a seeker of God, act and think?” David is not suggesting that only perfect people can really worship, but he is telling us that true intimacy with God is vitally connected to the attitudes and actions we carry through life, and that intimacy with God should be a passionate pursuit of our life.
This beautiful song of David has a heartbreaking tone. If it were modern music, David is singing the blues. He is greatly troubled about the spiritual condition of his generation, and he holds nothing back in pleading to God for help and comfort and revival.
Psalms 11 is written by David. He knew about foundations. As king he laid the foundation for a nation, and as a worshipper he laid the “foundations” for a future temple for God. As David looked around at his world he saw how those foundations were in constant danger. He would see the same thing today, no doubt. Psalms 11 is meant to be a song of reassurance, much the way we might sing “How Firm a Foundation” in the old days, this is a song about the essential choice each person must make: to flee from the terrors of their day, or to find their purpose and stability in God.
Psalms 10 is a lament. A cry from the heart to God for help! Specifically, the Psalmsist is grieved about the inequities of life. Why do bad people prosper and good people suffer? The Psalmsist wonders why evil and lies and injustice are so prevalent. He wonders where God is in the midst of it all. But at the end of the lament the words are full of hope and faith as we are all reminded that God has not lost his grip on the ways of any generation, past, present or future!
We live in a world that is broken. How should we respond to the evil and brokenness that is all around us? Psalms 9 gives us some great help on this topic.
Have you ever stopped to marvel at how awesome God is? It is easy for us in our human pride to puff ourselves up and marvel at how great we are. In today’s Psalms, however, David puts us in our place as humanity. He reminds us of how great God is and how any position we have in the world has been given to us by God.
Do you ever feel like you are not hearing from God? Like He has grown silent? Join the club. Most people have had that experience, even David, a man after God’s own heart. Today, we explore what to do when that happens. Silence in general makes many people uncomfortable. But sometimes silence is God’s prescription for our distracted souls.
Psalms 3 is a deep visceral cry of pain. David writes the Psalms in the midst of one of the greatest crises of his life. In David’s brokenness and pain over Absalom’s rebellion it is clear that there are a few things David knows about God that will sustain him through this trial… things that will also preserve you today, no matter what you are facing!
Psalms 2 is amazing and majestic as you would expect. But, what you might not expect from a Psalms is also true… It is prophetic! Often referred to as a royal Psalms, it may have been used to help coronate a new king or may have been written after Nathan affirmed God’s covenant with David. But ultimately Psalms 2 points to Jesus in powerful ways that made it one of the most quoted Psalms in the New Testament. Today, for our purpose, it reminds us that no matter what turmoil rages in our world, God is in control. He has a redemptive plan for the people who will embrace His Son!
The Psalms are a collection of ancient Hebrew songs of praise to God, about half of which were written by David. They offer us an amazingly intimate perspective on who God is and how we engage him in worship. Psalms 1 is a Psalms of David giving instruction concerning good and evil. He is setting before us life and death, the blessing and the curse, that we may take the right way which leads to happiness and avoid that which will certainly end in our misery and ruin.
Today we wrap up our short journey to refresh our minds around our mission and purpose at Salem. In public relations and advertising there is a commonly used word: messaging. It guides your efforts and focus … So, staying “on message” is critical! But it is also hard. For the Jesus follower, that message is always The Gospel ... The life-giving story of Jesus!
Today we begin a brief but important journey. We seek to define the real essence of Salem. Not by our traditions or preferences, but to know God’s sovereign purposes for our fellowship. In the midst of all our many amazing attributes (our people) and ministries, who are we and why are we here? The answers are very exciting
We have seen Jesus portrayed so often in a certain way, that we may have missed the real Jesus, the Jesus that emerges at Easter. Resurrection is about Power, Hope, and Victory. This is the Jesus you ought to know!
Today we begin a two-week look at the significance of Holy Week. Why are these seven days so pivotal in human history? Why are 1.5 billion people on the planet celebrating? It turns out that none of the events of this week surprised God. The cross and the empty crypt were all a part of His sovereign plan to rescue you, long before Jesus was in the cradle. If God went to these lengths to rescue you, you can put the question of His care for you to rest forever! And there is nothing that could ever separate you from His love for you in Jesus Christ.
Today we finish our long journey through the Gospel movement in Ephesus and the subsequent letter Paul wrote to the church he once pastored there. As Paul finishes his amazing letter, he gives a beautiful and detailed description of exactly how we can go about becoming a fierce and dominating spiritual warrior, a warrior who cannot be bested by anything the enemy throws at us.
War is horrible. It destroys. Of course, it is also true that war can rescue and redeem. Spiritual warfare is particularly painful, because most of the battles are not fought on a field somewhere far away. If you dare to live for Jesus, it will be a war fought on a daily basis. On the other hand, it is a battle, the outcome of which is already determined in Christ!
Paul has been filling us with practical wisdom on how to be "one body in Christ" as we live out faith in all the unique relationships we have, and today is no different. Today we talk about the marketplace, and how we treat those around us where we work, play, live and go to school. Paul has a transformational idea. Do everything you do as if you were doing it directly for the Lord! If you do this, you can't go wrong.
We have been talking about being one in Christ. Nowhere is that more precious and rewarding than in the family unit … and nowhere is it more desperately needed. After examining the mystery of marriage last week, this week Paul gives a primer on making family work. Our families have the opportunity to paint a picture for the world of God's faithful fatherly love.
Thinking about Jesus's life and how he fulfilled commands can help us gain clarity on how to do likewise. Searching for intersections between what God expects of us and Jesus's life gets us thinking more about his amazing life (as opposed to merely about principles to obey), and inclines us to give glory to the God-man for his perfect obedience on our behalf.
In our Ephesians study, Paul has been urging us to run to the light and stop acting like children of the darkness. Last week, it was a deeply personal plea about our attitudes and behavior. This week, it is a very public plea about our witness and impact on our generation. Paul says it is time for us to wake up and shine!
The last several verses in our Ephesians Series have been Paul's attempt to draw a clear distinction between two contrasting ways of life. Like discussing a photo and its negative image, Paul challenges us to be drawn to the light … To live as children of the light!
Paul just finished telling us to put off the old corrupted self and put on the new man, created to be like Jesus! But what does that look like? Today, as if he were describing a new wardrobe, Paul goes into detail helping us understand what a new creature in Christ should look like! The virtues we must put on and the vices we must peel off determine our effectiveness at the daily task of transforming into Christ-likeness and proclaiming the Good News.
In today’s passage, Paul describes for the Ephesian believers a dramatic transformation he longs to see lived out in their lives. In Christ, in your true self, you are now going through a metamorphosis at a level deeper than even your DNA. You have been “born again,” born from above, and are becoming like Jesus. If not, something is very wrong.
Today’s passage is one of the New Testament’s most beautiful expressions of how the church is supposed to function. It is a nuts-and-bolts level look into God’s design for the Body of Christ. Some things run on gas, some things run on electricity … but the church runs on grace. Specifically, the grace that Jesus distributes among his followers. When that grace is on display it produces the type of power that equips God’s people, edifies the whole body, and evangelizes the planet … the gift that keeps on giving!
In Luke chapter 21, Jesus describes one future calamity after another to his disciples. Many people live in fear of the future. Some stick their head in the sand, hoping it gets better. Others give in to despair. They give up on what seems like a lost cause. But Jesus had different advice for us. Today we will consider his wise counsel for our future.
We come to the dramatic conclusion of John’s introduction … his Christmas account. In today’s passage, John makes the ultimate claim … to know God, and see His glory, you must fix your gaze by faith on Jesus Christ!
John’s series of amazing revelations continues. Jesus came to offer a dying world eternal life. Up until now, we have discussed things easily dismissed as “theology” or even theory. But “death becoming life” is tangible. Something is either dead or alive! Lazarus was dead, but came to life, and Jesus was in the tomb but now the tomb is empty. And today, in Christ, you become no longer a child of dust and death, but instead a child of God. And, one day, your tomb will be empty too!
Ever just get tired of the darkness? Darkness is depressing (shorter days, bad weather, etc.). Darkness is dangerous, and it is a favorite way to describe spiritual death in the Bible. Then Jesus comes along at Christmas and turns all that upside down!
John really wants you to meet Jesus, and know who He is! John writes 21 chapters worth of stories and commentary, which focuses only on the three last years of Jesus’ life and ministry. Today, you could meet Jesus in ways that could change your eternity, and turn your world upside down!
Everyone would like to think they are pursuing a “worthy life.” Today, prepare to be challenged as Paul takes measure of a worthy life and throws down the gauntlet, urging you to live to the fullest!
Paul shares with the Ephesians the details of a prayer he has been consistently praying for them. Today, that prayer is our focus as we ponder the many things that God offers us when we when we begin to pursue a life in Jesus.
Everyone loves a mystery, especially God, but the mysteries of God are not to entertain, instead they are to redeem. But, unlike cheap fictional mysteries, God is always true to His nature and His purpose. His nature is love and truth. His purpose toward us is redemption! Today we explore the amazing and mysterious story of how God is inviting humanity to meet Him at the cross, and find life.
Are you looking for some peace … a little break from the chaos? Jesus is our peace. In fact, Jesus is the only peace available that is capable of making a real difference in the chaos of this earthly life and beyond! Paul explains today in Ephesians 2:14-22.
Today’s passage is about refugees and walls and conflict. It turns out that every one of us stands on the wrong side of a wall of hostility before God without status or rights. Yet, Jesus did something amazing! To a world of selfish and violent people, He offered his life, His blood, to change our status. Now, in Christ, we are refugees no longer! We now have a home of our own! It is just not here.
In today’s text, we see some of Paul’s most well-known verses. They read like a movie script, describing a cosmic conflict between good and evil, between God and the enemy, and the prize is your soul. You are not a helpless pawn in this conflict, though most of the people on the planet are living as such. If you meet God’s grace with faith today, you will pass from death to life! You will be saved!
