With over two decades as a franchise CEO and another 15+ years coaching franchisors globally, Stephane knows the leadership pitfalls that can derail even the most promising franchise brands.

In this episode, Stephane shares: ✔️ The #1 mistake franchisors make: seeing franchising as a transaction instead of a partnership ✔️ Why leadership (not management) is the key to scaling beyond 30 units ✔️ How to create rituals that build trust, connection, and culture ✔️ The leadership crisis that stops franchisors from scaling—and how to overcome it ✔️ How accountability must flow both ways to create empowered, high-performing franchisees

Stephane also shares a powerful real-world case study from his client Poulet Rouge, a brand that transformed its growth by embracing these leadership principles—and now opens a new franchise nearly every week.

Armed with a mother’s determination and fueled by her passion, Nichole set out to create something extraordinary—a business that not only generated profit but also made a profound impact on society. The 1st law of psychology ‘we do what is expected’ was in full play in Dr. Shania Seibles life while growing up.

Her parents were born in the 1940’s. Both received their PhD’s. One in physical chemistry and the other in organic chemistry during a time when it was difficult for minorities to do so in our country. Whether her parent’s expectations were spoken or unspoken Shania knew she too would do something great one day.

There was never a moment where she decided to be a doctor, or entrepreneur, or for that matter rich. She just knew she would be.

In fact, this year’s theme for the WFC is: Leadership Evolution. Robin believes leadership requires agility and humility and is becoming increasingly more focused on engagement, collaboration and empowerment.

Just a few decades back, autocratic leadership was considered normal. Remote working was an abstract idea and managers took important decisions with little to no input from their employees. The focus was on getting tasks done, efficiently under any situation.

The rise of remote working options is shaping leadership and micromanagement is almost impossible in remote settings, thus trust in employees has become increasingly more important.

Dr. Lauran Star talks diversity, equity and inclusion and how they differ. In brief:

  • Diversity are the things that make us unique and creates an affinity i.e.: hair color, age, gender, etc.
  • Equity is all about employees getting what they need to be successful at their role i.e.: a struggling manager being provided training to be a better manager.
  • Inclusion is creating a culture where everyone feels valued and heard.

We are 98% similar as a human race. Thus, Dr. Star says the only real diversity is diversity of thought and to encourage diversity of thought a company needs to focus on an inclusive culture. Bottom line, when you remove inclusion all you have left is diversity.

You must listen to this interview and the passion for which Dr. Lauran Star talks about the research and importance of Inclusion!

Mary Jane (MJ) Riva, CEO of Pizza Factory has an interesting 3-prong approach to roadblocks, obstacles and failure.

  • Failure to MJ is just another word for learning and developing character. MJ acknowledges we are all flawed human beings and is unapologetically herself.
  • MJ consciously weighs out whether the business is running her or if she is running the business. This allows her to take stock of what is truly important and if her commitments are in alignment.
  • When an obstacle presents itself MJ checks her inner compass. She does this by turning to God through prayer and reflection to determine if she is on purpose and using her talents wisely. This allows her to be at peace with present situations as well as an unknown future.

Listen in to an authentic and wisdom filled interview with MJ on this episode of The Franchise Woman podcast: Where Passion & Purpose Collide.

Sharon Duke Estroff, CEO and Founder of Challenge Island joins Rebecca Monet and Tracy Kawa on this episode of The Franchise Woman podcast: Where Passion & Purpose Collide.

What did I learn?

  • Challenge is important to a child’s emotional, social and intellectual development.
  • Taking risks and stepping into unknown territories without adults at the ready to solve problems, give direction, set goals or even boundaries encourages a child’s critical thinking, creativity and social interactions.
  • These life skills are more important than IQ and will lead to a well-adjusted and successful adult.

Sharon believes a vital attribute to success is resilience – and if we shield our children from challenges and risks we do them a great disservice. Listen in as Sharon talks about how she encourages her franchisees and their students to think and act like a palm tree – deeply rooted, strong and agile, swaying with the winds no matter the velocity.

Porter has an inner justice compass; a due north. She has been fighting for the underdog and the victimized most of her life. As a prosecuting attorney she worked tirelessly to bring justice to the victims of child abuse, sex offenses and murder.

After 10 years she left the world of law and entered the franchise space. She quickly realized there were some ‘gaps’ between her experience and skills and the franchise model. She was overwhelmed with the magnitude of responsibilities in areas that she was unfamiliar with including marketing, sales, employee development and financial management.

What makes Chris Kelly such a great leader? I think it's several things including her childhood upbringing, her Quaker boarding school education, being true to her values and conscious decisions she has made along the way.

When asked directly what makes her a good leader Chris stated 5 specific things. One of my favorite ones, was regarding who she picks to work or partner with. Her criteria is very specific.

She ONLY works with people she likes and enjoys spending time with.

Shocker right? Yet, how many franchisors select franchisees (someone they will have a 10-year relationship with) solely on the basis of money, drive and/or skill? Or for that matter, how many employers have employees who get under their skin for one reason or another, yet they possess the right education, experience or skill set?
