This week we have a VERY special episode! Our dear friend, Seth Godin, is back on the pod and it is landing on a very exciting day, the release of his latest book, "The Song of Significance: A New Manifesto for Teams"! It would be impossible to note all of the incredible projects Seth has touched or describe him as one thing so in his own words "I am a teacher, and I do projects." Many projects in fact .. Seth has written 20 worldwide bestsellers that have changed the way that people think about work. Everything that Seth creates is truly an inspirational work of art and he has made such an impact on our lives and the lives and of so many. And we could no be more excited to do a deep dive into his latest book this week!

"The Song of Significance is a rousing contemplation on work: why it is the way it is, why it's gotten so bad, what all of us–especially leaders–can do to make it better. Economic instability and the rise of remote work have left us disconnected and disengaged. This is a book to share with bosses and co-workers, to discuss and put to action. No matter what our role, it’s within our power to change. Because, as Godin writes, Humans aren’t a resource. They are the point.” In this episode we also get into the impetus behind Seth's latest book, how we can learn from bees and their hive, building work that is worth volunteering for, who really profits from the idea of a "carbon footprint" and why everyone should be getting a dog!

We know that this book will resonate with you and your work and we hope this episode will too! Head to your local bookstore to pick up a copy today. And listen to this episode on Apple, Spotify or wherever you find your podcasts.

This is a throwback episode to a conversation that I had with Darius Sam from June of 2020. June of 2020, Darius had completed his first 100-miler and within 48 hours we had him on the mic recording the real story. And now, 2.5 years later, the New Yorker has recently released a documentary of what went into that project. By the way, since then he’s accomplished a 240 mile race in Moab that took 99 hours. Enjoy this re-release!

Darius Sam — a 19 year old Indigineous man — joined Steph 48 hours after running 100 miles to raise money for his local food bank. At the end of 2019 Darius was still using drugs and alcohol heavily, but he began 2020 with determination and a new vision of what is possible. He moved home, created a rigid sleep and work-out routine, and found a renewed sense of determination and purpose. 6 months later, and Darius is still pushing himself to find the edge of what he can accomplish.

So far, Darius has completed a self-made Ironman distance triathlon — completing only one week of training prior. After becoming inspired by a youtube video, Darius decided his next challenge was to run 100-miles for a cause. After visiting his local food bank, and recognizing the need in his community — he began raising funds. He surpassed his goal of $1000 dollars, raising over $80,000 by the time he completed the run.

His 100 mile run is a story of persistence and grit — and as his grandfather wisely said — “This is where you find out who you are.” Tune in to hear what feat Darius is taking on next — because there is no limit to what he can accomplish.

Steph Jagger's second book is nothing short of truly incredible – you will laugh, you will cry, you will relate on SO many levels to the journey of aging parents. It started as a side hustle, out of the side of a local kitchen, to a group of Mom’s who helped spread the word in Whistler, BC. Ed, a passionate or dare we say, obsessed baker has turned the side hustle into one of our favourite local vegan bakeries with the support of his partner, Tash. Churning out over 150 loaves of sourdough a day, this is not simply a “pandemic hobby” — this is a new way of life. And when having the chance to speak with entrepreneurs who are crafting their way to making a dent in the universe, one loaf of a bread at a time, we can’t help but get excited! Tash put it so well: “We are selling happiness” — and it is indeed the most delicious version of happiness in the village.

Self-proclaimed goal-junkies, Cecily and Steph continue to wrestle with the “old way” and stretch into new ways of proclaiming their future. The act of goal-setting is a constant state of living into the future, yet it can easily leave one not present to the moment at hand. If 2020 taught us all anything, it was just how precious each fleeting moment is. To compliment that, these two ladies dove into a conversation of declaring intentions. Like putting on a fluffy pair of slippers or lacing up racing flats, the intention is set when your feet hit the sole of whichever shoe. Cecily reminds us that intentions set the way and show you the path; the goal is always simply a guiding light.

Inspired by meeting this beautiful stranger, Steph caught up with Dominik on his tales of the last decade. As a student who failed his pilot’s license exams, he decided to make it through high school only long enough to get out and head straight to Spain for the hike of a lifetime: the camino de santiago. 800km later, he spent 30 days hiking and only took one day of rest for his weary, blistered feet. He recorded his journey and after 7 years of writing, has published his first book! During that time, life has taken him on it’s own adventure moving to Canada, taking up running and exploring new passions. It’s impossible to not be inspired by people taking action.

This week we talk to David Vertesti – known for his incredible musical prowess as the bassist of Hey Ocean, he has also been a cornerstone in the Vancouver Arts and Music scene. He created a beautiful event called Sing It Forward, performing at events of the likes of the Junos and was also the creative spirit behind the Vancouver Mural Festival. And he has also walked away from those creative endeavours. He has a really refreshing relationship with what it takes (read: all consuming!) to start something. Since the birth of his first child, he has realized that his brain never truly turns off and in order to be fully present, he had to decide where to spend his time. Despite COVID-19 derailing the Mural Festival in it’s original intent, he still found a way to bring it to life in 2020, creating arguably one of the most successful art expos of the pandemic. We are grateful for his perspective of letting go to create room for something new – even when you have no idea what that newness will be.

This week we talk with Brooke Harley, CEO and founder of Class Rebel. Brooke shares her perspective on living a life littered with failures and risk, all while trying to overturn conventional education and remove the barriers that exist to serve the very elite few.

Early into our discussion, Brooke poses the question, “would we construct our education system the same way knowing we are living a “hundred year life”?” With contemporary education ending at 21, and much of what one learns obsolete years after they learn it, Brooke is driven to reinvent this model and offer opportunities to become a lifelong learner without the lifelong debt. Speaking of money – her next course offers learners around the world the opportunity to become comfortable in the language and logistics around raising money in order to start their entrepreneurial journey on their own terms.

On this week’s episode of Uncorked, we circle back to move forward with Aaron De Jong, owner of Movement 108 and founder/CEO of Movr, a mobile interface designed to prescribe safe movements for every unique body. In this timely conversation, Aaron shares how Covid-19 forced him to make tough decisions in the fitness space inhabited, and what important lessons he learned from saying good-bye to the old “normal.”

As Aaron moved from brick-and-mortar to an online fitness studio, he faced what many small business owners are going through as we speak – The inability to fully capture what his former company brought to his, and his clients lives. A realist, Aaron soon realized he wouldn’t be able to replicate the kind of connection with the community he fostered previously, and he had to reevaluate what space he wanted to take up in the world. His journey echoes what so many are currently experiencing, and his approach to letting go can certainly be of help to those in his industry, and beyond.

In this week’s edition of Uncorked, we dust off our Canadian tuxedos and join Everett Bumstead in celebrating one of our beloved practices in this country: tree planting. Everett’s new documentary, One Million Trees, challenges our assumptions about the job and the highballers who share a passion and joy for life outside the 9-5.

No two tree planters are the same. It’s a fact Everett lays bare at the outset of the conversation. In his 7-year career (in which he alone planted over 500,000 trees), he’s spent time on the block with lawyers, models, and triathletes alike. Throughout the discussion, he shares a love and appreciation for all the skilled labourers who traverse the land, their value measured in the work they do. His biggest fear? It’s not the long hours, the unpredictable weather, the swarms of mosquitos or the extreme solitude… it’s being tethered to a job he can coast in.

This week on the pod we introduce our new General Manager — Cecily Elmas!

Matt, Steph, and Cec first crossed paths at Lululemon — before Matt and Steph started The Corker Co and before Cec embarked on her own entrepreneurial journey. Steph and Cecily discuss her journey from professional dancer, to a 15 year career at lululemon, to becoming a mom and starting her own business, to now joining The Corker Collective.

From her goal of being the best dancer in Canada, to retiring and falling in love with helping people feel better about themselves — Cec reflects on her relationship with time and how motivations and priorities change as we grow older.

The duo discuss life after lululemon — and how maternity leave helped Cecily find the space to come into her own, and to move away from her identity as ‘Cecily from Lululemon’ to ‘Cecily’.

Cecily isn’t constrained by the limited beliefs others place on her, or dictated by competition: “I can’t compete against anyone because no one is me” — she embodies the belief that anything is possible and finds joy in repetition on the quest to mastery.

Tune in to hear Cecily’s goals — small, big and juicy. And reach out to hello@thecorkercollective.com to work with Cec — because Cec’s ultimate goal is: “For all human beings to live a full life — where they are heard and they feel like it has meaning and purpose.”.

Amil Reddy is a Equity & Inclusion Speaker and an incredible educator. They join Steph at the mic this week to talk about equity in the workplace, the power of pronouns, and how allies can better show up for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities.

“My diversity training and culture of competency training is not about vocabulary and what to say or do … my training and my work with teams and executives is how not to be an asshole.”

Amil shares strategies to start the conversation around equity and inclusion, and ways to stop making folks feel othered. They also highlight the need to create space for people to grow and change. Whether someone wants to change their pronouns, or to correct a mistake — there is space for it all.

“I’m a huge fan of beautiful mistakes if you are in a learning environment, in a space of growth.”

The language and scope of diversity and inclusion work has evolved over the years — but Amil explains that all are valid and important — because systems need to change.

“When it comes to working to elevate equity seeking groups or to gain equity, it’s not about a hierarchy of needs, to me it’s about a holistic approach of looking at what we need to do to change our systems, to change systematic oppression.”

Tune to hear Amil’s advice and guidance around being a better, more inclusive human.

She designs beautiful spatial experiences for residential and commercial clients and is passionate about making space feel good. Beyond her creative practice, Laura is a community creator. She is a connector of like minded people and a devoted ambassador for anything or anyone she believes in.

“Yes it’s about how it looks — but we try to take it one step back — and think about: ‘how does it feel to be in space?’ — and ‘how can that impact your wellbeing?’”

Laura and Steph riff on starting a studio, balancing being a creative and a business owner, and why being a community connector is at the heart of it all.

“My purpose — the reason I am on this planet — is to be a community creator.”

Laura co-created the Changemaker’s Market — where over 140 women-led small businesses, entrepreneurs, and artists from across BC came together in support of women's health. The Changemakers Market raised over $45,000 for the full spectrum of women’s health — all during a global pandemic.

Jenn Harper is an Ojibwe entrepreneur and Founder + CEO of Cheekbone Beauty. Jenn began her entrepreneurial journey in 2014 after becoming sober and receiving inspiration from a dream. She launched her business in 2016 without any experience in the beauty industry — but with a burning passion to create representation of Indigineous youth.

“I don’t think I understood how important representation was at the beginning — even though I knew that’s what we wanted to do — I didn’t get the power until I’ve gotten the feedback from people in our community.”

As Jenn was building her business, she simultaneously dove into her healing journey — finally embracing her identity as an Indigineous person. She had been estranged from her family because of shame, and struggled with her identity having a white mother and Indigenous father. As she repaired her relationship to her family, she dove into the history of Indiginous language and culture. Emily Schromm is a creator, serial entrepreneur and author helping others empower themselves by way of food, movement and business. She recently published her first book, The Process, and launched EMPRESS, a digital publication filled with workshops, video, audio and written content, live classes and more.

Other ventures include EmFit: online nutrition and exercise programs; Evolved Motion: a backpack-turned-weight-training invention to make the world your gym; Element Tea: an herbal tea line; and Platform Strength: a 24/7 access strength gym in RiNO, Denver.

Emily joins Steph on the pod this week to talk online personas, letting go of food guilt, and pivoting in both health and career. She reflects on how we limit our identity to what shows up online, and how it can be a detriment to our self development and evolution — because we become so attached to this precious version of ourselves on the internet.

Emily reveals how her attitude towards health and fitness have changed, and how she has embraced major pivots in her businesses. Now she asks herself in her work: “Can I help people — especially women — with guilt?” From letting go of ego in training, to removing the association between guilt and food. She recognizes that athletes “don’t have a problem with moving — we have a problem with stopping.” This realization came when she acknowledged that her view of wellness was warped, and that she didn’t want her clients to feel the burnout she was experiencing.

“All I was doing was beating my body up — and setting standards I was never able to satisfy. I want to be better everyday — but at what point does that affect your psychology in saying — ‘I am never enough’.”

The brother x sister duo are back at the mic together this week to talk about the art and power of an introduction. They recognize our tendency to play small and vague when introducing ourselves, and we (often women) feel that strong introductions will be perceived as arrogant.

Matt suggests that we should get more specific, and come equipped with stories. And Steph commits to stop playing the comparison game when introducing herself among peers. The purpose of an introduction is to provide context that is quick and accurate. The goal is to communicate to the audience what authority you have to speak, and why your voice matters. And if you haven’t been specific or generous in your introductions before, there is power in knowing that you can always re-introduce yourself.

“It is a powerful thing to say — this is who I am and this is why my voice matters.”

Aaron dives into the possibility in uncertainty, and his vision for the new normal. The meaning of place is transforming as fitness moves online, and health and wellness is no longer tied to a physical space. Aaron has used this time as an opportunity to consider his role in this shift: “I want Movement108, and I want movr, and I want all of the things that I touch to be a part of helping people in the process of building a new normal.”

As the world is constantly changing - Aaron remains optimistic and excited for what is to come - but recognizes the need for grounding and rest: “It’s allowing yourself to move into those zones of recovery, and actual rest, that will all of a sudden spark something that you didn’t know existed.”

Steph and Aaron riff on motivation during COVID, and why touching your toes matters: “Do what you can with the information you have available. And then tomorrow do the same. Matt and Steph are back on the pod together this week to discuss how they are individually navigating the limitations of COVID. From how they are eating, hosting online dinner parties and sourcing supplements, to their favourite ways to sweat, to the things they miss the most about pre-COVID physical proximity.

Ange spent 10 years living in the US - from Texas, to LA, to New York. In each place, she moved through uncertainty and loneliness, to establish routines and a feeling of home. In these experiences, she learnt how resilient she was, that everything is part of a bigger journey, and that “Home is where I am”.

In all periods of change Ange has experienced similar stages of uncertainty. She moves from denial, frustration and sadness to surrender. In this allowing, she is able to move forward in the work.

“As soon as I allowed that process to happen, a new way of being opened up for me”.

Ange has worked with the TurF leadership team in handling the disappointments of COVID-19 — letting go of the hope of how things should be and creating space for new possibilities:

“It’s that feeling of not being attached to what’s supposed to happen, and then from that place, everything starts to feel like a win.”

Ange reflects on her connection to The Class, how she got started, and bringing the practice to Canada at Turf. Especially now, she acknowledges the importance of being at home in our bodies:

“We process things through the body, for me, being engaged in my physical body allows me to be fully present.”

Listen in to hear how Ange has moved through the anger and disappointment of COVID and into a place of creativity and learning — refusing to put self-development and her goals on hold, and transitioning into the next phase of possibility.

Lana and Steph — two passionate recruiters — discuss the changing recruiting landscape, why we need to take the shame out of getting fired, and designing a life you love based on whatever circumstances you are in. Ten years ago, when Lana began her career in recruiting, things worked a little differently. Networking was done face-to-face, or “belly-to-belly”, and you were expected to get to know candidates beyond the job description. Lana and Steph continue to love their work, and are committed to keeping candidate searches human.

Lana has made a practice of embracing change, and she reflects on what candidates need to consider in the current economic landscape during COVID-19:

“There will be change. Some of it you can control, and some of it you can’t. Now is an opportunity to get really clear on what matters to you — whether you are in the right role, or with the right company, or with the right team. Whether or not you want to shift careers entirely… Now is the time to embrace all of these changes, and these thoughts, and be really raw and honest with yourself”.

Tune-in to listen in on how Lana stays inspired, how she embraces life’s shifts, and where she goes for her source of hope and positivity.

Mark is the man behind the IG @createthelove and podcast host of ‘The Mark Groves Podcast’. From a pharmaceutical rep to a human connection specialist, committed to providing no BS relationship advice, Mark riffs with Steph on identity, change, and how our behaviour differs between work and home.

Mark and Steph explore the beginnings of Mark’s transition into entrepreneurship, and how he came to embrace ‘love’ in the brand of his business; “When I woke up in a relationship and asked; ‘How did I get here?’ that led to me to ask; ‘How did I get here?’ in everything. You start to see: ‘Is this my story or the story I was taught to want?’”

Mark analyzes our need to fit in, and how it is evolutionarily programmed into us to want to belong — this is why rejection feels so painful. Our attempt to avoid this pain response leads us to abandon parts of ourselves in order to be accepted. Marks believes that becoming conscious of this is part of an awakening. It is terrifying to declare what we want - in life, in work, and in a relationship - because others may not approve of it. This is why entrepreneurship is so terrifying. It is a vulnerable act of putting oneself out into the world.

“So much healing occurs in the vulnerability that is required to put yourself out there”.

Tune in to be inspired to be vulnerable, to embrace change and to find a little more self-acceptance.

“When we have a hard time accepting the transitions of someone else, and who they were — it’s because we haven’t held space for who we are”.

Matt and Steph are back on the pod together this week to discuss navigating uncertain times. They cover how to lead others through uncertainty, as well as managing our relationship with ourselves and our goals as the world becomes increasingly unpredictable.

Matt talks leading through uncertainty; A lot of the content available online is recycled tips on how to work remotely, but “there is a difference between leading remotely and leading through uncertainty”. And the reality is that “we’ve always led with uncertainty, yet we were under a veil, thinking that we knew how to predict the future”. There is no rule book for your business, and now we no longer have past-based evidence to give us confidence in business decisions. It is time to step into our conviction and leadership when making difficult decisions.

Steph asks: What can we create in or communities to work together? “If you have the means and the resources to support and uplift other people, now is the time to do it, now is the time to raise your hand, now is the time to press send”. Because the changes that you make now will be necessary for the economy and our communities on the other side.

Discouraged with delayed by-when’s and cancelled events? Tune in to hear Matt and Steph’s take on getting courageous and creative in response. Some things are being cancelled or postponed, but new digital events and opportunities are abundant — pivot, don’t give up.

Kyle and Brent Pease are Ironman triathletes, authors, and co-founders of the Kyle Pease Foundation. The pair competed in the 2018 Kona World Championships - becoming the second ever able + disabled duo to cross the finish line.

The Pease brothers started racing together in 2011 with the St. Anthony’s Triathlon in Florida. They raced for 7 years as a pair before competing in Kona, completing 3 Ironman races along the way. They discuss what it’s like being on the journey together:

“That’s what we love so much about this. We get to be on that journey together, and training is a big part of it. We decided early on that this was not going to just be: ‘How strong can Bret get to carry a human?’ but: ‘How strong can both of us get mentally and physically?’”

Brent trains 25 hours a week, training over-distance to account for the extra time it takes on race-day to complete the course together. Tune in to hear how Kyle prepares for race day, and how he takes on the role of coach to support and encourage his brother across the finish line.

Kyle and Brent founded the Kyle Pease Foundation two months after completing their first triathlon. They were overcome with the feeling of crossing the finish line, and immediately began thinking of ways to support others to join them. They have since supported 84 individuals across 500 finish lines.

Listen to hear what is next for the brothers, how their journey has impacted their lives beyond sport, and what is making their hearts beat faster.

Steph Jagger is the author of ‘Unbound: A Story of Snow and Self Discovery’ — a memoir about how she skied around the world, and discovered who she was.

“During my ski trip, the mountains both broke me and rebuilt me. It was the avalanche of my life. A rush, a burial, and a resurrection. I went from being a participant, a do-what’s-expected kinda gal, to a woman who holds court in her very unrestrained life.”

Jagger and Steph riff on how she tunes into her intuition to live an intentional life, while still running a company. She describes what it’s like simultaneously being confronted by the most beautiful landscapes and her darkest inner demons, and the resulting shift in her relationship to her ego.

Since completing the massive goal of skiing around the world, Steph felt the pressure of the question “what’s next?” — she has since reframed her goal setting and asks “what is it time for now?”

“If the goal is to be and feel a certain way in life, the question becomes how do I step into that in this very moment?”

Taryn Eyton, the human behind the instagram @happiestoutdoors, joins Steph on the pod this week to talk transitioning careers, the hustle of doing what you love, and the importance of acknowledging the barriers many communities have to getting outdoors.

Taryn followed a traditional career path, studying geography, and then earning a law degree. She found herself working inside all day, feeling depressed and unfulfilled. Despite living a life she now loves, Tarynn honestly describes her departure from working in law, and why is wasn’t without difficulty and feelings of regret; “The reality for me, and the reality for a lot of people, is that it was really hard. It was really hard to know when to make that decision, to know if it was the right decision, to know if it was actually a thing that was going to make me happy. To know if I had sunk too much of my life and my money and my energy into something — could I just leave it?”

But despite hustling to make it work, Taryn knows she made the right move; “You have to do what you love because then you will feel okay about working hard to do it”.

Taryn is in the process of writing a guide book about backpacking near Vancouver. The five year process has been a labour of love, with a focus on outdoor ethics and how the book can help hikers ‘leave no trace’.

Listen in to hear Taryn’s favourite hike near Vancouver, what snacks she packs to fuel her adventures, and how she hopes to elevate her business in the next 5 years.

Ed, Founder of Open Dialogue, long-time friend of the Corkers, and DisruptHR 2019 speaker, joins Steph at the mic this week. Ed spends his days creating space for people to explore and get to know themselves. Ed explains Open Dialogue as a “blending of human led coaching with a piece of technology — an artificially intelligent chat-bot, that you can chat with kind of like a human, and it just listens and interprets what you are saying. It then responds to you with questions and prompts and guides you through a self-reflective process”. Ed explains that the AI isn’t meant to replace humans, but rather act as a mirror to highlight our own humanness. His goal with Open Dialogue is to keep us in a state of contemplation longer and more often.

Ed and Steph dive into how his business was born from burnout, how his path to self-discovery was sparked by a 90’s computer program, and what it’s like working with family.

James and Steph became fast friends in December on the last bus travelling to the start line of the California International Marathon. The duo chat about what it’s like to run your first marathon when things don’t go to plan, how to deal with contradictory advice, and why it’s beneficial to start something new without the context of what everyone else is doing.

James is a lawyer currently living in L.A. and was told as a teenager that he would never be able to run a marathon. With his first marathon in the books, James can’t wait for #2 in 2020, just before his new baby arrives in the spring.

Matt and Steph kick-off 2020 together at the mic, talking goal setting, avoiding guilt and shame around the new year and why the context of your goals matter.

“How do we set goals so that are not fixing the past — but so that we are creating the future we want to live into.”

Matt and Steph riff on what it means to change our relationship with judgement, accepting the tough moments, while having the vision to see what is possible in the future. What Matt sees in many of his coaching clients is the desire for freedom, and therefore goals can go beyond weight loss or making more money and rather focus on what will get us unstuck and living into possibility. The context in which we make our goals matter - if we are in a place of fear, doubt, guilt or shame, we will be driven by our desire for approval and our goals won’t serve us.

Tune in to hear when and how Matt and Steph set goals, why we shouldn’t make goals out of personal development work, and how to unleash your strengths this year.

Ashley Brodeur is the founder of feelosophy and is currently based in Toronto after starting her business in Vancouver. Ashley and Steph discuss the process of moving a business from the west coast to the east coast, the power of goals, and the importance of rest.

Ashley explains her thinking around rest days, and changing our mentality from just resting our physical bodies, to resting our mental and emotional selves as well. Even when we skip the gym, we are often still turned-on and mentally stimulated — we can take these days to break our patterns and to put away our phones and computer.

“You create your own reality in terms of what you choose to digest in the way of content”.

When Ashley moved from Vancouver to Toronto last year, she found freedom in the reality that feelosophy will continue to thrive in Vancouver while she builds it up in Toronto.

“I never wanted feelosophy to be about Ashley Brodeur, I wanted it to be about rest, and connection, and slowing down, and touch. And because of that other people can teach it, it doesn’t just have to be me”.

Being in the yoga and wellness space, Ash talks about avoiding the comparison trap by using her 5 year vision to re-focus on herself and what she is working towards.

Jacki Carr is a goal coach and motivational speaker. Jacki and Steph met 10 years ago, when Jacki was creating the vision of the life she lives today. Tune in to hear her describe how she lives into her goals and vision, while remaining spontaneous and present for her loved ones. They riff on Jacki’s ability to create so much and so often, and why busy doesn’t always need to carry a negative connotation;

“I do well being busy. Busy is only a bad word when I have exceeded my time limit in a certain domain, i.e. career, and not spent time with my family. Or busy when it’s out of alignment with my values”.

Jackie attributes her ability to create so prolifically to honouring her weird, honouring her busy, and honouring her relationship which supports her in doing it all. Despite this love of being in the flow, she still gets stuck all the time;

“When I get stuck, I have to ask myself: am I being of service, am I honouring my whole self?”

They talk what it means to have a goal and vision, and how to embrace when it changes and evolves - failing up, and deciding what’s next. From morning routines, to spontaneity as ritual, Jacki is living her bliss and we hope she inspires you to do the same.

Matt and Steph are back behind the mic together for an ‘ask us anything’ edition of Uncorked.

They discuss the perception of TeamCorker as ‘so dang positive’, but offer that they both relate more strongly to a commitment to the world of possibility rather than positivity. Matt explains that we can think positively, or manifest our dreams, but urges listeners to consider the work in between the meditation cushion and the attainment of meaningful results.

“The practice of seeing people, situations, and circumstances through a lens of possibility — I resonate more with. It gives me not only the ability to see something differently, but it also gives me the responsibility. It’s my job to see the possibility of it.”

The brother and sister duo recognize that life gets tough, and it’s not all unicorns and rainbows, but possibility is a tool we can choose to navigate it.

Despite Team Corker’s commitment to crafting lives we love, sometimes we have to do things we don’t want to do. Matt challenges us and listeners to ask ourselves:

“How can we play to and offer our strengths? Strengths being the things we are good at and we find fulfillment in — it doesn’t mean they are easy”.

Matt explains that it’s about managing our weaknesses well — using our strengths to manage our weaknesses. And they riff on the importance of asking for help, using the strengths of those around us to avoid the overwhelm that can occur between the start and finish line.

Tune in to hear what goals Steph and Matt are hoping to cross of the list before the end of the year, and of course the things that are currently making their hearts beat faster.

Thom Brennan, friend of TeamCorker, challenged Steph to flip the script and field the questions on this week’s pod. Steph agreed to sit in the hot seat, letting us into her world and revealing the things we won’t find out about her online. We know Steph lives a life full of training, recruiting, and coaching, but tune in to hear what Steph does to wind down and to feel as though life is in balance.

Thom dives into Steph’s strategies to remain upbeat when things get tough, how she feels reflecting back on 5 years of The Corker Collective, and the ups and downs of starting a business.

“I think what doesn’t land on the vision, are the tough times. You don’t wish for things to be hard. And sometimes you don’t really know how they’ll turn out, or what they will look like. It would be remiss for me to say it’s always been easy, because it hasn’t.”

Steph is known around town to be relentlessly positive and an exceptional cheerleader in supporting others in accomplishing their goals. But she reveals that she doesn’t feel like she is always positive, but rather focuses on staying in her own lane, avoiding comparison and doing good work her way.

“It’s a lot easier to be positive and remain positive when you are on top and when you are winning. The responsibility of running a company feels enormous and while I totally choose it, it can be hard — because you look around and wonder … where are the other cheerleaders?”

Steph talks about moving through fear in creating something new, and relates it to The Corker Collectives latest offering, ‘The Now What’— taking on the challenge of creating a course that allows people to move from feeling stuck to feeling like things are totally possible.

“The law of gravity pulling us down to be mediocre, or to settle, or to not create something new is really real.”

Yvonne believes that “in order for people to have a sense of empathy, a sense of place, and a sense of belonging, you have to come to the table not with you hand reaching out for something, but your hand extending to give something”.

Yvonne’s deep belief in the power of connection has kept her committed to Synergy and their mission.

Lisa Bentley is a speaker, author, and 11-time IRONMAN champion. She is one of the most decorated Canadian triathletes, and has remained heavily involved in sport since her retirement from professional competition in 2010. Lisa is known for her contagious smile, and describes how she found joy in the hard stuff; “I’m not saying racing was an easy thing. But at the core of it, I loved what I did. I would get to the start-line, or wake up on race-day and say to myself, there is nothing else I would rather be doing”

Lisa and Steph riff on how Lisa has stayed involved in the sport she loves during retirement, and how the lessons she learned as a professional athlete translate into her life today. For as long as she can remember, it was ingrained in Lisa not to quit. She attributes this lesson to much of her success in sport, but also acknowledges that she has had to learn to be kinder to herself, loving herself enough to sometimes let herself off the hook. She hopes to see people love triathlon as much as she does, and hopes that people don’t lose their joy in becoming too regimented. Lisa gave Steph the advice years ago to “Run the mile you’re in”, and both Steph and Lisa find this lesson to hold true in all aspects and stages of life.

Alicia Woodside is the founder of Teffle Waffles, an accomplished ultra-runner, and a technical writer for a local tech company. She is the epitome of what it means to hustle for your dreams. Her day job funds her entrepreneurial dreams of bringing nutritionally dense and protein rich frozen teff-waffles to grocery stores. When she isn’t writing about tech, or slinging waffles in her industrial kitchen, Alicia is running amongst the trees, preferably fast, and with a teammate by her side.

Her most recent accomplishment is her FKT (fastest known time)of the West Coast Trail, covering 75km or terrain in 11.5 hours. This run, along with her FKT of the Howe Sound Trail are her two proudest athletic accomplishments, because of her speed, but also because they were completed with a friend and teammate by her side. Alicia firmly believes that a teammate makes her runs more fun and meaningful, and also result in her best times.

Alicia credits her career path to asking herself the question; “What would I do for free … what would I commit to doing every weekday for the next ten years that I’d be willing to do without getting paid”.

Look out for Alicia’s Teffles in the Nester’s freezer aisle as she makes the jump from local farmer’s markets to major grocery stores.

Shanique Kelly is a DJ and event producer in Vancouver, she runs Intersessions YVR, and throws her own monthly parties in Vancouver. Shanique began her DJ career by attending the first ever Intersessions workshop, a series which aims to bring light to the gender disparity in electronic music. Since this serendipitous beginning, Shanique has gone on to run the Vancouver Intersessions Workshops, and now produces her own parties, ‘Level Up’, a monthly queer rap, hip hop and r&b dance party.

Shanique’s passion is in creating safe spaces for people who are part of marginalized communities, whether they are people of colour or part of the queer community. After DJing for other event producers and club owners, Shanique noticed the trend of tokenism, and was inspired to create her own event with a focus on hiring people of colour and members of the LGBTQ+ community. By curating these events thoughtfully, and purposefully, her parties have become spaces for people who don’t always feel safe or comfortable.

Listen in to hear Matt and Shanique chat about dealing with imposter syndrome, how to avoid tokenism, and the importance of representation.

“You are not your job title. You are a multi-faceted human”

Lizzy Karp is a community activist, connector and ‘baby’ DJ. She spends her days as a Senior Manager at TELUS STORY HIVE and is committed to using story telling as a vehicle for human connection.

Matt and Lizzy first connected at ‘Rain City Chronicles’, an event Lizzy cofounded after moving to Vancouver 10 years ago. She had spent alot of time around the music and comedy scenes in Toronto, and had come to realize that she often found people in the audience to be more compelling than the characters on stage. So, in a new city where she knew no one, Lizzy decided to create an experience where everyday people could have the opportunity to share their stories. The goal was to create live story-telling nights that were accessible, inclusive and fun-spirited.

“We are all content creators. So that gives us the opportunity to practice visibility. How can we own our story and tell it for people who are watching us, for the people who are listening to this conversation, for the people who need to hear it. That really excites me. On the other hand, when does it become too much? When are we commodifying our own story?”

Lizzy reflects with Matt about how people are becoming more critical about who is telling what story, and the importance of reflecting on whose voice isn’t getting heard? And who is getting asked to tell the same story over and over again?

Lizzy also helps to produce an annual event called ‘Loaded Bow’ in Palm Springs. ‘Loaded Bow’ is a gathering for self-identified women to come together to learn and to meet one another in a space that is designed for people to truly connect over conversation. It acts as an opportunity for entrepreneurial-spirited women to fill up their soul-points for the rest of the year in an inclusive environment. The program is peer-lead, and removes the conventional hierarchy usually present between speaker and audience, emphasizing the reality that we all have a story to tell and experiences that others can learn from.

“Today is the slowest things are going to be”

On this week’s episode of Uncorked, Steph sits down with the outgoing CEO of Mountain Equipment Co-op, David Lebistour, to look back at what came before his 11 years as CEO, and to look forward to life after MEC. David’s career was not one he could have foreseen, but one common denominator throughout his life has been his openness to change.

“If you are open to life as it comes at you, it gives opportunities to go to places that you would never had dreamed of”

From his early aspirations of becoming a professional surf-sailor, to working as a designer in South Africa, to immigrating to Canada in his 40s and struggling to find work, to eventually finding a career than aligned with his passion at MEC, David has lived a life full of unpredictable change and adventure, and he has no plans to slow down. Since surrendering to the reality that a career as a professional athlete was not in the cards, David has remained committed to continue learning into adulthood. He has taken on a new athletic pursuit every 5 years since moving to Canada, embracing the activities that British Columbia has to offer.

“If I look back on my life, I’ve always striven to be of use, utility, and value, but at the same time, I’ve always maintained a very strong passion in my life. And those two have very seldom been the same thing. My career and my passion have not always aligned, but I’ve always had a very strong passion for the activities that have been part of my life the whole way through … MEC is probably the only time in my life where my passion + my career have lined-up”.

“As an athlete you would never just build. You recover. You work hard, and you recovery hard.”

Matt and Steph are back at the mic this week to talk summer vacation and summer goals. TeamCorker is OOO (Out of Office, or Only Operating Outdoors) this week, and the pair reflect on why we decided to commit to one week offline.

There is something beautiful about shutting down. When a weekend doesn’t feel like long enough to recharge, its time to extend the break, and come back feeling fresh. A change in routine and a period of rest can be an opportunity to re-evaluate or recommit to the goals you set in January.

Time off means different things to different people. “Do whatever allows you to feel recharged, to generate new ideas, and to give yourself space both physically and mentally to dream, to meander, to get lost. Because that is so healthy for us as humans, especially in a constantly connected environment.”

June is 6 months into 2019 and it’s a great time to reflect. You have 6 months left for your 1 year goals. “All of those good intentions that look like goals, now need to either be put into action to become goals, or taken off the list. Because a good intention has no space on a goal sheet.” What can you celebrate? What have you have accomplished that gets you closer to your 5 year vision? What goals have you not accomplished yet that are still important to you? What goals can you take off the list that are no longer a priority? “Are the goals left on the goal sheet worthy of the next 6 months? Or do they need to be evaluated?” And if you didn’t achieve a goal in the first 6 months, but it is still important to you, its not time to give up on that goal, but to recommit and decide what you need to double down on. A goal you haven’t accomplished, is only a goal you haven’t accomplished YET.

How do we renovate our relationship with time to have access to the outdoors this summer? What tweaks can you make to maximize the next couple of months of glorious sunshine?

“Life is ultimately how you spend your time. What are you saying ‘yes’ to and what are you saying ‘no’ to?”

This week Steph sits down with Coach and Guide for impact leaders and entrepreneurs, Urszula Lipsztajn. Urszula describes her journey from dissatisfaction in her corporate job, to living a life of purpose as a successful entrepreneur. In 2011, she was in what she thought was her dream job. To a bystander’s eye Urs was thriving, but in reality she had the early stages of an ulcer, her hair was going grey, and her relationship was struggling, all while she was working 70+ hours a week. Urs decided to take a risk, and to make the leap into entrepreneurship. Her first iteration of this was in instructional design and learning program work. She quickly discovered the reality of the financial highs and lows of entrepreneurship, and that doing the work she was doing didn’t fill her up.

Since her time living in a 600 m2 apartment with her partner in East Vancouver, to living in Squamish with an abundant garden, Urs’ business and lifestyle have transformed dramatically, but this growth did not happen overnight. “If I see something that matters to me, I make it happen, no matter how terrified I am, or how empty the bank account is, or how much I can’t sleep. I just see it, and I need to do something about it”. Urs recognized, with the help of a coach, that her gift was in helping people in moments of vulnerability. People would come to her in personal crisis, and she was able to guide them quickly to a breakthrough, and she realized how amazing she felt afterwards. Urszula’s reminds us that “the greatest gift we are can give the world is to be ourselves. Because when we are ourselves we are able to serve the world in the way we are here to serve”.

Urszula’s 3 most important values include:

  1. Time
  2. Trust
  3. Legacy

“If you are able to trust yourself, you are able to spend your time on the things that most matter to you. And ultimately this results in the culmination of your legacy”.

How can you spend you time today, so that you are proud of the legacy you leave?

TeamCorker has been working hard behind the scenes for the last few months to put on our largest annual event. We bring together 400 people at Science World here in Vancouver to talk about the future of work and how we can disrupt the status quo. Matt and Steph sat down at the mic to reflect on this years event, to discuss the ways we decided to disrupt how events in the city are usually run, and to highlight some of the truth bombs dropped from the stage by our incredible speakers. We love being the ones to host this conversation, and this event is our way to give back to the HR community and beyond. We choose to open up the speaker applications for Disrupt HR YVR, allowing us to highlight some of the visible and invisible diversities that exist amongst the thought leaders of HR. This week on the pod, Avni joins Steph to talk all things entrepreneurship. After working in the corporate sphere for 10 years, Avni made the jump from working for Adidas in Shanghai into the fast-paced world of start-ups.

Avni’s first venture gave her a crash course in entrepreneurship, and over those first ten months, the seeds for her next project, ‘Poppy’, we sown. Anvi explains that entrepreneurship is like walking a tight rope between curiosity and discipline. The obsession with the concept of ‘Poppy’ stemmed from the idea that “everyone says it takes a village to raise a child, but none of us have a village anymore. And so, what would it take to leverage technology to be able to build some semblance of a village”.

After 4 years of Poppy, the scalability of the business broke down, and she decided to call it. Anvi reflects that, “sometimes it is the better and right thing to call it. And that doesn’t mean everything is lost … This is what trying looks like. You have a bold vision in your head, and you give it a shot, you give it your all in the most responsible way you can. And sometimes it doesn’t work”. While quitting is often the hardest thing to do, Avni remains obsessed with answering the question: “How do we make the lives of working mothers easier?”, and her heart is beating as she dives into her next entrepreneurial pursuit.

“I don’t think that many of us are truly honest about pain. And about the fact that we truly do experience pain, if not daily, weekly… The most useful thing that I can share is normalizing pain, so that we can soften into it. So that when we experience psychological pain, instead of wanting to push it away or wanting to attack it with strategies, we can soften into it and create space and capacity for it".

Hiro is a registered clinical counsellor, a certified expert in the use of neurofeedback and biofeedback, a positive physiology master, and a brain enthusiast. This week she sits down with Steph to talk about pain, Mondays, what gummy bears mean to her, and why we all need to meditate and slow down. Hiro uses the word lab because she believes in the power of curiosity. She explains that to be curious, we need to slow down and say no — “In slowing down I will get there faster”. Hiro has discovered that it is not the meditation itself that brings advantages, but the curiosity that we cultivate through meditation that brings about the benefits, the decreased stress, the improved sleep, and the increased levels of psychological wellbeing. And Hiro is now truly interested in discovering how those benefits for the self can be used to impact community as a tool for social justice; using mediation to become less preoccupied with the self and more interested in helping others.

“The more I surrender and soften within pain, the more I create capacity to be resilient and ultimately to be joyful and compassionate. So it is a message of life, of flow, of flourishing”.

“My vision for the future is that we need more and better leaders”

Jacqueline Jennings joins Steph on the pod this week. Jacqueline is coach to conscious leaders, business consultant, a group facilitator and a facilitator of decolonization practices. Steph riffs with Jacqueline about her ‘Soulful Entrepreneur: Ranch Retreat', how they came to be, and how they fit within he along-term vision. Jacqueline’s ultimate mission is to support people in remembering that we are not separate from each other, from nature, or from the source, and her retreats are an extension of this goal.

“It’s hard to let go of limiting beliefs because they serve us, and there of lots of reasons why they show up. But there is a simplicity to letting them go, and then seeing what is possible when we are coming from a place of wholeness. It’s mind-blowing”.

Listen to the full episode to hear why Jacqueline thinks we are all leaders, how she is raising a little human to be conscious in today’s world, and why she made the shift in her career from a successful Executive Assistant to her current role working with soulful entrepreneurs and businesses.

Matt + Steph take the mic this week to riff on the idea of change. When is change hard and when is it easy? Why do we resist change? When is it time to make a change and to disrupt the status quo?

Change is easy when it moves us closer to our goals. When something we thought was impossible becomes possible. The work in change management, is to paint a picture of the future that is worth living into. Change doesn’t need to be hard or easy, but rather an unshackling of what has been.

Matt explains why the idea that we need to have it all figured out before we take the leap, results in stagnation and inaction. And for this reason, the time to act is always now. The time is now, because the perfect time doesn’t exist. We never know what the result of change will be, or where our decision will take us, but the unknown shouldn’t result in paralysis, because these disorienting dilemmas are key to true transformation.

Erin is a wellness coach and podcast host of ‘Raw Beauty Talks’. Raw Beauty Co. began as a project to photograph women without make-up, photoshop, or filters. Providing a platform for women to show up as they are, and to talk about what happens behind the scenes and below the surface. ‘Raw Beauty Talks’ today is an ongoing conversation about beauty, confidence and self-love. Erin acknowledges that, for her, and for the women she is in conversation with, this is an ever changing and evolving journey.

“Over the years I have come to understand that I can create space between the thoughts in my head, and now I can observe them, and that alone can reduce my reaction to them. It can allow me space and time to shift the narrative in my head into something that is more empowering. And I am at a totally different place now with my body, where I can view it as a tool that allows me to experience life”.

Self-love isn’t just an emotion we feel — it takes work, attention, and nurturing. “I like to think of self-love as a verb or an action we take towards ourselves rather than just an emotion we are waiting to feel ... If we look at it as a verb or an action it becomes something we have control over”.

Ultimately, Erin wants us to become empowered around our health and well-being, to know what works for us and what doesn’t, without additional stress or obsession about whether we are doing it “right”.

Bradly Hall, owner of ‘Savary Island Pie Company’, chats with Steph this week and shares the courageous story of how his Mom, Eileen, founded a baking business out of necessity over 30 years ago. The ‘Savary Island Pie Company’ started from humble of beginnings, but allowed Eileen to survive as a single mother, and to emerge from poverty as a female business owner.

The company continues to thrive in it’s second brick and mortar location on Marine Drive, just across the street from its original store front beside ‘Bean Around the World’, where Eileen enjoyed an strong cup of coffee with her slice of pie. Although Eileen has given the reigns of the business over to family, her legacy remains, and her perfectly flawed (and controversial) reheating instruction remain on the pie boxes today.

Keep an eye out for the Savary Island Pie Company’s second location opening in Tofino this summer.

“If you’re going to write something, leave blood on the page. If you’re going to share a story from the stage, let it show your humanity” — James Altucher

Matt + Steph are back together this week on the pod for a life-update and to discuss the power of vulnerability, and the importance baring our humanity when you take the stage (or the mic). They take the time to recap the stages and start lines from the last few months. From the Re/Form Conference in Squamish, to W North in Whistler, to their experience together at the Boston Marathon, with Steph at the start line, and matt on the cheer line. The episode didn’t feel complete without sharing the sticky stuff, the messy bits amongst the highs. Matt opens up about his ongoing journey to starting a family with his husband Chad. The lessons learned around managing expectations, the surrogacy process, and what it feels like to be a gay couple navigating outdated medical forms and language. Steph shares about her health struggles, and how it has been affecting her training and racing. She describes her upcoming surgery, her fear around the unknown, and the challenge in changing her mindset around training, to focus on rest and recovery.

Listen to get to know a little more about the duo behind The Corker Collective — as they leave some blood on the stage.

Cicely is a diversity and inclusion consultant and activist in Vancouver. Steph and Cicely riff on how we can cultivate more inclusive workplaces, how people in leadership positions can become more diverse, and how the hiring process can change to make this a reality.

“I like to take people on a journey through D+I. Its not as simple as a one hour work-shop here and there. Its not a box-checking situation, which I think diversity and inclusion can become if its not done thoroughly or genuinely.”

Cicely explains that the definition of diversity and inclusion is changing from tolerance in the workplace to the celebration of individuality, where we genuinely want diverse humans at the table. Evidence and research shows that diversity is beneficial to a business’ scalability, longevity, and profitability. She challenges us to have the hard, vulnerable conversations in which we acknowledge that we don’t live in an inclusive world, and that unconscious bias exists and that it often prohibits a diverse workplace. Because, ultimately, these conversation are beneficial for not only humans, but for bottom-lines.

“5% of CEOs in Canada are female. Even less are women of colour”

D+I can be overwhelming and it can be hard to know where to start. Cicely suggests making a distinct effort to make meaningful connections with people who are different from ourselves. Because if we keep surrounding ourselves with the same type of people, we will never understand anyone else’s experience.

“One small thing everyone can do is to be more compassionate with other peoples’ experience”

“I think I’m still struggling with a loss of identity around athletics … It was very much results driven, now-a-days there isn’t as much of that … When you are racing it’s easier to quantify your results and you can base your success on where you place, or your time, or how your workout went. In regular life there is not as much opportunity to quantify your success. So it’s a combination of a loss of identity and not being able to track success — the success for me now is being able to pursue a growing business that I love”

As a ‘gravel junky’, doting father, wife to a high performing athlete and passionate entrepreneur, Trav is learning to embrace the power of ‘and’. Steph and Trav discuss his change in personal identity from ironman to entrepreneur, the importance of taking time to dedicate to being a dad, and the power in supporting his wife in her own athletic pursuits.

Trav is founder of InnerVoice, a platform to share the unique, interesting and inspiring stories from the world of endurance sports, and a trusted source for athletes to openly share the struggles, the joys and their journey. Trav is driven by the desire to show the human side of high level athletics. His focus has shifted from performing as an athlete to developing as a creator AND a doer, with the goal of becoming an “executer”, a professional at creating and doing. For Trav, in the time of instant gratification, a proffesional executer is someone who is thoughtful about what, when and why they show up.

“The political is personal. The personal is practical. The practical is related to embodied daily life”

Dages and Matt sit down to discuss her evolving role as a yoga teacher, author and radical feminist. New York is where Dages found Katonah Yoga and her teacher Nevine Michaan, but she has taken what she learned across the pond to her new home in Paris, France and continues to plant seeds across Europe with her teacher trainings and intensives.

For Dages, Katonah Yoga is an open source methodology that can be applied to any yoga practice and to life, a “Philosophical Milieu” of embodiment. Matt and Dages explore the importance of “learning to play your own instrument”, of recognizing and working with our “first and second natures”, so that we can play well with others. Yoga means union, or to yoke, and by knowing our own habits, tendencies, perspectives and biases, we are able to join the orchestra. “We have to listen to each other, we have to see each other, we have to touch eachother — otherwise there is no opportunity for the symphony to come together”.

Naitik began his entrepreneurial journey in 6th grade when aunt taught him how to use a graphic design program. At age 13 he was hired by a start up to do their design work, and from there he built up a roster of freelance clients. By the time he was in high-school, Naitik started his own design studio with his brother, working with clients around the world. Naitik then travelled from India to Vancouver to study at Emily Carr, without knowing much about Canada or what he was getting himself into.

During his first internship at Microsoft, Naitik has the opportunity to work with a visually impaired engineer named Kartik, who was denied from India’s top tech university due to his disability. He went on to receive a full scholarship from Stanford University to study Computer Science, AI and Machine Learning, and is now a full-time engineer at Microsoft. Together Kartik and Naitik began to discuss the need for support for disabled people in the tech industry, and so they decided to start ’Next Billion’ to fill the gap. ‘Next Billion’ has grown from a side project to a full-blown entrepreneurial endevor to connect people with disabilities who work in engineering, product design, data science, and product management to mentors in the industry and employers willing to hire inclusively.

Naitik’s ultimate goal is to eradicate the need for ‘Next Billion’, and that disabilities no longer carry stigma in the hiring process.

“There are 1.3 billion people in the world who have a disability, and in the US and Canada this population makes up 15 % of the workforce. They are at least 2.6 times as likely to be unemployed due to the stigma and the barriers that they face. However, there are so many advantages to hiring people with disabilities. They have an 85% higher job retention rate, because they value employers who are willing to hire them, and they are proven to be equally, or even more productive compared to employees without disabilities…There is this huge population that is skilled, and is not being given equal access to opportunities”

Dave became interested in food and nutrition from a young age, as his athletic career took off in high school and he started to look for ways to optimize his performance and recovery. Dave began his career as an elite cyclist, racing in Vancouver while studying food science and nutrition at UBC. He went on to race in Europe, where he was inspired by their simple, no-nonsense attitude towards food and nutrition to create the ‘Prima Bar’, a whole-food solution for athletic fuel.

Dave’s cycling career came to a close, but he brought with him his passion for whole foods, and love of simple European cuisine, to create two businesses focused on authentic and delicious pizzas. He is co-owner of Il Castello Pizzeria, which serves arguably the best pizza in North Vancouver, and Holy Napoli, which brings Neapolitan Pizza to your local supermarket freezer aisle.

How do remarkable leaders structure their lives to generate remarkable results?

“Management and leadership are really different things. Leadership is what we call it when we do something that may not work, and when we are not worried about compliance, but we are worried about change instead. Don’t wait until 2019 to start manifesting your best, most conscious, thriving self.

This week on #Uncorked, Matt + Steph break down the behaviours, actions and habits that one can cultivate to #finishstrong, and to enter the new year feeling refreshed, prepared and excited to tackle those juicy 2019 goals.

Matt + Steph’s tips to stay on top of your game this Holiday Season:

  1. Stick to your movement routine, stay consistent, and take advantage of any extra opportunities to get up and move.
  2. Travel with your running shoes + fit in what you can. Be kind and forgive yourself if your training sessions aren’t what you are used to.
  3. Make nourishing food a priority. When you are not at holiday parties or social gatherings, be extra mindful of what you put on your plate.
  4. Clean up your space before travelling — come home to a clean home + office.
  5. Stock your pantry with healthy staples + order fresh groceries to be delivered for when you return home.
  6. Cut back on animal products and be mindful of consumption in all areas.
  7. Focus on conscious gift giving, avoid trinkets, and prioritize experiences over things.
  8. Send a sweet note in the post and let someone know you care.
  9. Donate to your local homeless shelter as temperatures plummet.
  10. Reduce waste and avoid single-use plastic. Don’t make it the season of excuses, plastic cutlery, and paper plates.
  11. And if you only do one thing, stay present.

"I believe if you pressure people to do what they don't want to do, if you make them feel guilty and tell them that they should do things, then they don't do them, and they actually do the opposite. If you respect their decisions and give them time to settle with what you have requested, or asked, or what you have put on the table, they often become more open and can make the choice for themselves"

For Cynthia Vuchev, it took one yoga class, one early morning run, and one documentary to change her life. On the mic with Steph today, she shares the biggest transformation she’s experienced, how she wants to make a difference, and how giving people (like her husband) choice, gives them the space to do things they never thought possible.

In the same way I know where my Foodora order is at, I will know where my resume is at in the hiring process. + People will want a human experience but don’t actually want to interact with humans to get things done. And relationships will always matter.
