We were honored to welcome our special guest on Breaking The Cycle this Friday Night, May 2nd 2025:

Mary H. Quattlebaum M.A., LPC, EMDR trained with Heartwood Counseling and Wellness.

Mary's Bio:

In addition to my professional identity, I'm also a wife and a mom to three wonderful (albeit maddeningly energetic) boys. We do sports, we do rough-housing, and we do LOUD very well. We have also spent the last nine years blending an amazing family. Divorce recovery and blended family issues are something that I specialize in and have experienced personally. When we start talking about these hard topics in counseling, know that I've been there, done that, still have the t-shirt, and am here to hold space for you to discuss how these things personally impact your life.

As a neurodivergent therapist with personal and professional experience, our practice is informed not only by specialized training but also by lived experience within a neurodivergent family. This perspective allows me to offer compassionate, relatable, and effective support tailored to individuals and families navigating autism, ADHD, and other neurodivergent identities. Before becoming a therapist, I was an educator for many years, working with students aged 4-11. During graduate school I transitioned into child advocacy work and began pursuing clinical licensure. Working with children and families in crisis showed me just how important mental health care is and taught me that healthy relationships and families are crucial to our society! Helping individuals find freedom from anxiety and build strong connections is my passion!

Tonight was a privilege to sit down with @mqbaum27912 from @heartwoodcounseling and discuss resources for treating Autism.@mqbaum27912 shared so much helpful information about the autism spectrum.

About Amy:

"Hello all, my name is Amy Jenkins. My commission to therapy came after completing extensive therapeutic work while attending Moody Bible Institute. During this time I saw the Lord reveal Himself to me in a profound way, through His Word and through His people. While I searched for my role in ministry the opportunity arose to return to school and this is where my calling came full circle. I have had the pleasure to experience the "beauty from ashes' ' work for myself in therapy and my hope is to join others in their own beauty from ashes therapeutic work. My training from Moody Bible Institute has helped to build my faith and resources. I was blessed again when attending Abilene Christian University, to obtain a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy that has awarded me extensive knowledge in working with individuals and couples. While in the Master’s Program, I served at Stay The Course(now One Tribe). While at STC, I was able to work with veterans, first responders, and their spouses providing counseling services. Upon leaving STC, I completed additional coursework to make myself eligible to sit for the National Counselors Examination(NCE). Praise the Lord, I passed and moved into Associate level counseling. This proved to be a try season, we had moved and COVID had unfolded on us. During this time, it wasn’t till years later that I would come to embrace the struggles during this time. In 2021, we moved back to the metroplex and shortly there after Strive 2 Thrive moved from a pen to paper idea to an office. In my experience as a human I have come to understand that life is hard. Day- to-day challenges arise and can bring unwelcome stressful feelings. Relationships are a part of everything we do and our best intentions are sometimes met with complications or difficulty. Myhope is to remind folks of the compassion that the Lord has graced us with and that we can see each other as learning to navigate the challenging world ahead of us.My approach to counseling not only comes from study of evidence based tools but also a genuine desire to come alongside others in their journey. Proverbs 1:5 is part of my prayer at Strive 2 Thrive, I pray to offer wise counsel to those seeking my services. My goal is to aid those in learning fresh tools and perspectives in order to have more peace and joy throughout their lives."

Perfectionism is a double-edged sword that can drive individuals to achieve great success but can also lead to feelings of frustration and inadequacy. While striving for excellence and pushing oneself to do better can be beneficial, perfectionism often manifests as an unattainable standard that is constantly shifting. This relentless pursuit of flawlessness can result in anxiety, stress, and a fear of failure that can be paralyzing. It is important for individuals to recognize that perfection is a subjective and unattainable goal, and that true growth and success come from embracing imperfections, learning from mistakes, and finding value in the process rather than just the end result. By cultivating self-compassion, setting realistic expectations, and focusing on progress rather than perfection, individuals can break free from the grips of perfectionism and find a healthier balance in their pursuit of excellence.

Navigating expectations and cultural differences can often be a challenging aspect of coming together with a diverse group of individuals. It is important to recognize that everyone brings their own set of beliefs, values, and norms to the table, which can sometimes clash with those of others. However, rather than letting these differences create barriers, it is important to approach these situations with an open mind and a willingness to learn from one another. By taking the time to understand and appreciate each other's perspectives, we can begin to build bridges and create a more inclusive and harmonious environment. Through communication, empathy, and a willingness to compromise, we can learn how to come together despite our differences and celebrate the richness of diversity that each individual brings to the table.

Letting go of perfectionism is a transformative process that allows individuals to break free from the confines of unrealistic expectations and embrace their imperfections. It requires a shift in mindset from seeking flawless outcomes to valuing progress, learning, and growth. By recognizing that mistakes and failures are not a reflection of their worth, individuals can cultivate self-compassion and self-acceptance. Letting go of perfectionism also involves acknowledging that challenges and setbacks are an inherent part of life and an opportunity for growth and self-improvement. By embracing vulnerability and imperfection, individuals can foster creativity, resilience, and a greater sense of contentment and fulfillment in their pursuits. Ultimately, letting go of perfectionism allows individuals to live authentically, celebrate their unique strengths and weaknesses, and find joy in the journey towards self-discovery and personal growth.

Effective communication of emotions and boundaries is essential for fostering healthy relationships in all aspects of life. It begins with self-awareness, understanding one's own emotions and boundaries before attempting to express them to others. In communication, it's crucial to use "I" statements to express feelings and needs without blaming or accusing others, fostering a non-judgmental environment where both parties feel heard and respected. Active listening plays a pivotal role; being present and attentive to the other person's emotions and boundaries helps build empathy and mutual understanding. Setting clear boundaries is equally important, articulating personal limits and expectations while also respecting those of others. Consistent and open dialogue, free of judgment or defensiveness, cultivates trust and strengthens relationships, allowing individuals to navigate conflicts and challenges with empathy and respect.

Taking accountability for one's actions is a fundamental aspect of personal growth and integrity. It involves acknowledging one's role and responsibility in a situation, whether it be a success or a mistake, and being willing to face the consequences, learn from them, and make amends if necessary. By taking ownership of our actions, we demonstrate maturity, honesty, and respect for ourselves and others. It fosters trust and credibility in relationships, as people are more likely to respect and admire those who are accountable for their behavior. Moreover, accountability empowers individuals to actively shape their lives and strive for continuous improvement. Rather than placing blame externally, embracing accountability allows for introspection, self-correction, and ultimately, positive change.

Expectations, when left unmet, can gradually transform into resentments, poisoning relationships and souring experiences. Initially, expectations may arise innocently, fueled by hope and anticipation. However, when reality diverges from these idealized visions, disappointment sets in. With each unfulfilled expectation, frustration accumulates, breeding resentment. Whether it's in personal relationships, professional endeavors, or societal interactions, the chasm between what one desires and what one receives widens, fostering bitterness. Resentments, once formed, can corrode trust, communication, and goodwill, leading to further discord and dissatisfaction. Therefore, managing expectations with a dose of realism and understanding can mitigate the transformation of hopeful anticipation into embittered resentment.

Addressing this crisis demands a holistic approach that encompasses prevention, access to effective treatment, and a compassionate response to those struggling with substance use disorders. Only through concerted and sustained efforts can we hope to stem the tide of devastation caused by drug overdoses in the United States.

Alan Leshner's Brain Disease Model underscores the profound impact of substance use on the brain, highlighting the necessity of an extended period for recovery. According to this model, the brain requires approximately 36 months to heal from the neurological changes induced by substance abuse. This timeframe reflects the intricate process of restoring brain function and chemistry disrupted by prolonged drug or alcohol use. During this recovery period, the brain gradually reestablishes neural pathways, neurotransmitter balance, and cognitive functions compromised by addiction. By recognizing the prolonged duration needed for healing, individuals struggling with substance use disorders are encouraged to commit to long-term recovery efforts, including therapy, support groups, and lifestyle changes, to facilitate comprehensive healing and sustained sobriety.

Understanding Detachment with Love:

Detachment with love is about loving someone while also recognizing that you cannot control their actions or emotions. It's about letting go of the need to fix or rescue others and allowing them to take responsibility for their own lives.

Setting Healthy Boundaries:

Setting healthy boundaries is a crucial aspect of detachment with love. It involves clearly communicating your needs and limits in a relationship while respecting the other person's autonomy. Remember, boundaries are not about building walls but rather creating space for growth and mutual respect.

Practicing Self-Care:

Practicing self-care is essential when practicing detachment with love. It's about prioritizing your own well-being and nurturing yourself emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup, so take time to replenish your own energy reserves.

Letting Go with Compassion:

Finally, detachment with love involves letting go with compassion. It's about releasing the need to control outcomes and trusting in the natural flow of life. Remember, letting go doesn't mean giving up—it means surrendering to what is and finding peace in the present moment.
