About The AccountantsExperience an electrifying encounter of cultures as China and India take centre stage in this awe-inspiring theatrical event from visionary artist Keith Khan, choreographed by Xiexin Dance Theatre and Terence Lewis Contemporary Dance Company.

This dance extravaganza challenges our notions of identity and cultural dominance.

Main characters Kash and Liam – voiced by the talented Josh Hart and actor and author Shobna Gulati – are of British-Chinese and British-Indian heritage. Delivered via texts and voice notes, their banter and soul-searching dialogues playfully debate which cultural superpower reigns supreme – from food to iconic landmarks and spiritual beliefs.

This battle is enriched by a high-tech visual and acoustic feast crafted by the ARIA-nominated sound artist Somatic and the award-winning design studio idontloveyouanymore providing stunning immersive visuals, plus lighting design from the award-winning Simon Corder and dramaturgy by Jude Christian.

Brought to you by Keith Khan, whose grand artistic creations have adorned events from the Notting Hill Carnival to the London 2012 Olympic Games, The Accountants invites you on a global journey right from your seat.

Amy & Viv had the pleasure of speaking with anti-racist activist, Ted Speaker and author of 'The Good Ally', Nova Reid. We cover A LOT. A trigger warning to our Black and people of colour friends, it's a heavy, heavy episode, BUT we also talk about joy, and we loved hearing about Nova and who she is outside of her job function (spoiler, she used to be a pro-singer - and hates karaoke!) We learnt so much, what an honour to have her on. Please follow her work and buy her book, it's an invaluable piece of anti-racism work that will stand the test of the time.

Viv introduces two new besea.n core team members King-Wey and Peiwen onto the poddy! We talk about things Peiwen notices moving over to the UK aged 14, like how we have separate taps and daylight savings (didn't realise that wasn't a thing in other countries?!), as well as delving into our turning points for thinking about race, identity. King-Wey shares her stories around friendship breakups, and uses a great phrase about spring cleaning friendships - perfect reason to dust the ol' friendship cobwebs.

Squeeeaaaal besea.n were invited to the UK premiere of Marvel’s latest action-packed film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (released 3rd September 2021).

Kai, Karlie, Amy & Viv (sorry Charley and Mai-Anh!) strolled down the red (blue) carpet and experienced the film before its release, and it was EPIC! At a time when our community has been suffering, this film has felt like a big win for the ESEA representation and we’re so proud to have been there to see it all happening.

We got the opportunity to chat with actors of the film, Simu Liu, Fala Chen and director, Destin Daniel Cretton on everything ESEA representation. Also, have a guess whether they are all team rice or noodles...Find out from our interviews: https://www.besean.co.uk/spotlight/shang-chi

I had a very fun and insightful chat with two close friends and fellow besean co-founders, Izzy and Amy! We talk about calling in versus calling out, how we wore sunglasses that shielded ray-cism (lol), our advocacy work at besean, how they find #eseajoy, the play-by-play of White guilt, how we desperately wanna be genz!

I spoke with the AMAZING POWERHOUSE, Liz Pemberton (she/her), who runs The Black Nursery Manager - a training & consultancy firm which focuses on anti-racist practice within Early Years. We talk abut why discussing identity and racism with young children is so important, how she handles White Women in the education sector, the nuances of discussing identity and how the Jamaica and Hakka Chinese history is so intertwined (rooted in colonialism, of course). ENJOY!! I KNOW I DID!

Soooo, I had an idea to bring on my ex's onto the podcast LOL! My ex, John Clapper and I unpack our two year relationship. What my parents thought of me dating a musician, how he experienced feeling 'othered' in China, and I grill him on questions about having a 'thing for Asian women'. Ooh it's a goodie. Please forward to your straight, white male friends who may be inclined to 'have a thing for [insert ethnicity]' to listen to!!

I had the pleasure of talking with Elizabeth aka Femme Castratrice on Instagram. We talked about growing up in Wuhan, straight into weird dick pics she’s been sent (one involves sushi), and her career and life as a sex worker, how it has formed her thinking around feminism and gender politics, we talk about the usual Asian fetishisation lol and slut shaming that happens in our society. Such a wonderful, funny & insightful chat and Elizabeth was so incredibly generous with sharing part of her life story. I hope you enjoy!

I had the absolute pleasure of talking with Sue Cheung - the author of Chinglish. Which is young adult book based almost entirely on a true story of Sue’s life growing up in the 80s as a takeaway kid, being bullied at school, harassed by customers, navigating her identity as a BBC, as well as some deep and complex family dynamics. It truly was the first book I’ve ever read which I could relate to as a British Takeaway kid and I was so honoured to be able to speak with Sue. We had a nice chinwag and gossip after the record and I just love it when you meet someone who lives up and surpasses your expectations. She was a true delight and so I hope you enjoy.

Hi folks,

Today's episode I read out my futureme.org letter that I sent to myself a year ago in July. It really hit home just how much has changed since then. I was broken, my self-confidence was zero, I had a lot to work on tbh. After a lot of therapy, self-help and just being kind to myself, I now unapologetically identify as a feminist, I continue to learn about racism in our world and have somewhat become an activist in a short space of time. Sometimes it's cathartic to take stock of ourselves and how far we've come (and a reminder on how far we've got to go).

I read out 20 things I wish I could tell my teenage self, it was a lotta fun to pull together. Thank you to listeners who submitted things they would tell their teenage self - it was all very relatable and somewhat emotional to read!

In this week’s episode I address the recent email exchange I had with the Guardian over changing another image depicting East Asians when discussing Coronavirus. See my Instagram post and highlight 'No to racism' for the full story.

There are some classic How Asian are You questions submitted by Elsa Lee who has an amazing food blog.

I also address the support I received for the toxic relationship episode (you can listen here) and how it actually wasn’t well received by people who tried to guilt & shame me for speaking up about my truth. I talk about what I look for in dating (spoiler, it’s an extensive list), and it goes way beyond looks.

I talk about life being a British East Asian; from family life, to work, dating, relationships, food, racism, and general culture.

In this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Nick. We talk about finding your community as a gender fluid person. What gender fluidity means, being Chinese, how LGBT is STILL illegal in Malaysia (WTF), how genderising starts from a very young age, from phrases such as ‘boys will be boys’. How terms like ‘man up’, ‘being a pussy’ harms us all, unpicking habits in our daily life that harm LGTBQ+ people, I found out that Miley Cyrus is gender fluid, JK Rowling’s rhetoric on the trans community, mental health, similarities between being a painter decorator and makeup, and most importantly, celebrating being gender fluid. Nick also gives great advice that applies to all of us: be kind and listen.

Welcome to But Where Are You From?... A podcast by a late 20-something millennial learning about life as a British Born Chinese. I’m Viv, the host of the podcast.

I talk about life as a British Born Chinese (BBC); from family life, to work, dating, relationships, food, racism, and general culture.

In this episode I talk about how I had an uncomfortable yet productive conversation with my mum surrounding Black Lives Matter. Dating as a feminist, How LinkedIn is racist, my experiences of casual racism at work, how asian societal pressure from our family plays into feminism, such getting married, obtaining a good job, being slim, but also eating enough food when told too lol.

Trigger Warning: grief, losing a parent

We know that these types of commemorative days can be tough for those who have lost someone special. So we've created this podcast for those who are in this position to let you know that you're not alone, we see you and hear you. Laugh with/at us, cry with us. We're here!

Despite this being a commemorative episode for our dad who passed away nearly 4 years ago, it's actually really fun! We talk about our fondest, funny memories of him, what we learnt from him, what traits we've inherited from him (definitely his goofy sense of humour), how he was so adventurous; him and my mum went paragliding whilst we were on holiday in Thailand and left the three of us on the beach lol cause we were too scared. It did get a little teary and sad when we thought about what we'd like to say to him (I had the snot kinda crying), but we brought it back up with an impromptu 'How Asian is your daddddd?' segment haha.

Always happy to chat over on my Instagram too: https://www.instagram.com/vivthediv/

I talk about life as a British Born Chinese (BBC); from family life, to work, dating, relationships, food, racism, and general culture. These two need no introduction...So happy to finally release the episodes with guests @evelynmok @nigelng on the podcast! I'm gonna say it's an exclusive because my podcast is the first time they've both been on together as guests!! They are truly a dynamic duo, yin and yang. (We can say that cause we’re Asian) and it was an absolute pleasure having them on as their podcast was a hugeeeee inspiration for me starting this little lockdown project.  If a podcast could 'man spread', this is exactly what @ricetomeetyoupod has done. It’s essentially a takeover on my podcast 😂😂 this is largely...solely...exclusively... down to Nigel and his sound effects to be honest. Haha no but seriously, I was laughing so much that my usually un-budge-able eyeliner came off from me crying with laughter. Makes sense given that they are a comedy podcast! Basically the How Asian Are You segment turns into the entire podcast. We talk about dating as Asian people, ugly people on TikTok, their careers as comedians, cheap Chinese tech, me having big front teeth that Nigel pointed out (thanks Nigel), Evelyn's memory problems, making Asians cool.

This week, I had the most glorious time speaking to the award winning Actor, Director, Musician, Writer, Daniel York Loh.

His passion and activism as a British East Asian actor is admirable. Basically, HE’S A PRETTY BIG DEAL in this world and has done/is doing incredible things to disrupt the narrative that British culture holds surrounding being East Asian.

We talk about racism in the theatre world, how people view Asians as one monolithic block (hey, not ALL of us eat dogs, you know…wink), why the term ‘Oriental’ is not okay. My favourite part was right at the end when I asked Daniel about his proudest moment in his career. His response actually gave me goosebumps - it’s really lovely and shows his true integrity as a British East Asian actor.

He is writing and producing a Zoom digital arts event called WeRNotVirus (the live show on 13th/14th June is sold out but will be available as a video afterwards). It will be a collective of leading actors, writers, directors and creatives of East and South East Asian heritage from the UK’s performing arts industry to present a new digital arts event.

“This urgent artistic response aims to shine a light on the surge in hate crime directed towards the community during the Covid-19 crisis.”

Enjoy!!

Let’s stand for our black friends. I know that most of you will already be combating anti-blackness within our own circles or on your social platforms. Here’s just some resources from 30 minutes of researching, there’s so much out there for Asians to help support the Black Lives Matters Movement. This is not exhaustive. I encourage us all to continue to do our own research and education. Take care everyone.

Wow wow wow. Prepare to be blown away by @toritsui_ - climate activist, mental health advocate and proud Eurasian. I can’t even begin to sum up what we discussed. From her experiencing racism as a Eurasian at her international school in Hong Kong, to sailing across the world to help combat climate change, to being asked by Stella McCartney to take part in her Fall/Winter 2019 campaign… I know right?! Incredible. I could listen to Tori talk all day, she has a very calming voice which juxtaposes my shrill northern tones (haha) and she talks so eloquently about very complex topics around climate change, mental health & racism. The sign of a true expert!!

I talk about Asian flush or Asian glow and the embarrassing stories I recall of looking bright red, feeling sick, BEING sick, heart rate beating faster than when I do exercise. I tell the story of being grounded for 6 months when my mum found out I was drinking vodka on the streets haha! In all seriousness, it’s gotten me to the point where I rarely drink now, because, cba! I used to take Zantac but spoiler alert, apparently it might be carcinogenic too. Great.

As always, I wanna hear your stories. Are you lucky enough to be the 30-50% who are intolerant to alcohol?! Or has it never affected you and you can drink to your heart’s content?!

There’s a fun new segment called ‘How Asian Are You?’ play along to see if you can answer questions like ‘do you know what Yeet Hay is?’ ‘Did your parents used to roll a boiled egg over your bruises?’ lol.

I then talk about sending an article link about how to dominate your boyfriend in bed...in an email TO A CLIENT #truestory lol, how I got investment in my business, winning our first big client after 50 pitches, and failing and failing again. And how it’s okay to also fail! (Definitely listen to Elizabeth Day’s podcast ‘How to Fail’ if you haven’t already!) Sorry if this felt rushed, it was. I’ve been so busy at work this week. Hope everyone is doing good.

I absolutely LOVEDDD recording this episode with Mae. We've never met, we've had two phone conversations, but we really bonded after finding out we had so much in common. Both BBCs obviously, both 29 and born in February 1991, both self-employed women who work in the creative industry and slightly morbid - we both had a parent who passed away from cancer. The main difference is that Mae is crazily good at maths (she worked as an accountant at PWC before starting her own company) and she's like the posh, Southern private school version of me. I am like a Jenny from the block Northern, common version!!

It's a juicy episode at 58 minutes long, I didn't want to edit any of it out as I just found talking to Mae extremely interesting - and I hope you guys do too!

Soooo, this was recorded and uploaded! No editing! It's a very random, unstructured, unedited episode haha. I basically just wanted to come on to chat and say I feel a bit lonely. And that's okay sometimes! Thank God for technology nowadays. Don't expect any groundbreaking revelations here! I talk about the fact that the first bit of human contact I've had in weeks was hi-fiving my mum when she made a banging sweet & sour chicken, breaking it off with the Hinge virtual date, my bed knickers and bloated belly and what Netflix series I've been watching. Yeah, I told you it was a weird episode. I accept refunds.
