The awesome producer/DJ Nora En Pure was in town for a show on the day I played this set; so I channeled the vibe and tried to my best to mimic Nora En Pure (including some tunes by the lady herself).

I actually spoke of a more Defected Records direction in my intro voice-over. BUT, the on-the-fly choices I made as I was spinning the first 3-5 tracks just trended that direction. So, I embraced the direction and made the most of it.A couple of tracks from popular names like Hot Since 92 and Roland Clark, but MOSTLY from names you don't know, like Bontan, Sllash & Doppe, Pirate Copy, and more.

This past week was the anniversary of the passing of Frankie Knuckles. Are you familiar with his tunes? If not, you'll hear plenty of them in this set! (Also, are you familiar with island shown in the show cover image? Name the island in the comments!)
This is a set from the new internet radio station I've switched to: Balearic FM Come listen at either https://balearic-fm.com, or find the station on TuneIn (or other internet radio apps)). My live-play time slot is 3-5pm Eastern Time on Fridays.
I'll have a bit more musical freedom here than at my old residency (dogglounge.com). I played there for many years, and loved every set I played with that team. But Balearic FM's format gives me the freedom to play more Tech House and Techno. And it's listener base is about the same as Dogglounge's (though the station needs to work on its website sophistication and podcast distribution. We'll get on that right away ;-)
Still, though, THIS set would still fit in at the old station, with lots of great tunes from Motorcitysoul, Kruse & Nümberg, Reel People, and one of my all time favorites Everything But The Girl.

This is a 1-hour set (vs. normal 2) because of a time-schedule collision with the DJ on the station before me. This is more from the crate I assembled for last-show's "notable tunes from my first 150 shows".

As my 150th broadcast at the station, I collected 2-300 of songs I liked from the previous 149 sets into a digital crate from which to select this set of 34 as I went along. So the song style varies quite a lot, from straight-up deep house all the way to heavy tech house at the end.
I hope you've enjoyed the last 150 sets, and will stay with me for (at least) the next 150.

My normal Friday residency slot crept up on me, and I hadn't prepared as well as I maybe ought to have. So, this one is a bit ad-lib. But, it turned out pretty good.

Recorded at the end of the week where rioters (first) stormed the US Capitol in a minor insurrection. So, this set is full of elegant, classic deep house tunes designed to calm us all the heck down, and spread a little love and peace. And if the tune had a Wurlitzer keyboard, it got high-preference in getting played ;-)

This set was a "best of 2020" set. THREE HOURS of music. The first hour has new (to me) tracks selected from Traxsource's "Top 200 of 2020". The next two hours are replays of tracks I've played during 2020 that were RELEASED in 2020.
There's a MASSIVE list amazing producers here - Atjazz, Opolopo, Shur-I-Kan, Ross Couch, Crackazat, Mark Knight, Hot Since 82, St. Germain, Erik Kupper, Purple Disco Machine, Dr. Packer, and sooo many, many, many more.

This is the set I'd play if I were spinning at Blue Marlin beach club in Ibiza around 16:00. It's after lunch, everybody has plenty of Rosé wine in their blood, and these tunes would make you get up out of your beach chair and dance just a weeee bit with a glass of wine or cocktail in-hand. (Can you tell I'm missing summer in Ibiza???)
I hope these tracks from Sandy Rivera, Fred Everything, Giom, Shur-I-Kan, Tiger Stripes, Kerri Chandler, Kevin Fisher, Andy Caldwell and more will bring an Ibiza summer to you whenever, and wherever you are.
I like this set a lot. When pulling tracks into a crate, I didn't feel anything special; but the mix led the way, and the result ... well, I like it.

Super fun set today full of soulful house from Susu Bobien, Roland Clark, the rare Pure Dub by Nikos on his Bread of Heaven album, some Eric Kupper, Jamie Lewis, Lisa Millette and many, many more great tracks. I even threw in the legendary Carry On by Donna Summer produced by Giorgio Moroder. I seem to have to play that at least once a year. She had such an incredible voice.

I did about 10 minutes of preparation for this set. So, I don’t know if there is a “center” to the theme / sound. It’s just what I could find in the moment that felt like it would go with whatever was playing at that moment. This is a harder job than you think when your kit is 7,000 songs, and you don’t want to repeat things on the station too-often. So, it’s not perfect, but it’s just fine.
Set title derived from the fact that summer does not appear to be over in my area.

"NEOS" = Near End Of Summer. I'm watching my social media feed and seeing the various "closing" announcements from clubs in Ibiza (where "closing" means closing for the season). That means it's ... NEOS. Not QUITE done yet, but .. too-soon, IMO.
Lots of new stuff (to me) in this set. Maybe one or two things don't go well one after the other; but hey - it's my job to bring you new music, and hopefully you like the tunes.

The podcast title is metaphor for this being the first of the next "century" (100) of sets to come at Dogglounge, and that I turned one of those "notable" ages on my birthday this month. So, here we go!

Recorded live in the real world and Dogglounge.com on 2019 July 29. This is the 100th set I've played at Dogglounge. (My set title here is "C" - the roman numeral for 100. ;-)
To celebrate the milestone, I arranged to play "live" in the real world as well as online. Given that my time slot is 4pm Eastern on Sunday, I played at a really awesome rooftop pool here in Boston at the Colonnade Hotel. (No, the cover art photo is NOT from that hotel; but you can see it at https://www.colonnadehotel.com .)
One material issue nearly kept from happening: I was in a serious (cycling) crash 8 days prior to this set. I broke 4 vertebrae in my spine, and cracked a rib. Yet, I still wanted to be dependable for the set. So, I played it in fairly serious pain - which affected my concentration a bit, I'm afraid.
Nonetheless, here it is. Thanks to Jay from the Colonnade for helping make this event happen.
(Also, my voice-over is incorrect; the Donna Summer remix is by Giorgio Moroder, not Dr. Packer.)

Was recently in a trip to Italy, and felt like I came back with a very Euro summer beat in my head. Here's the result. Enjoy!
This one is all inspired by Ibiza. I don’t think I’m going to be able to get to the White Island this year, so I decided to re-create the vibe with my set yesterday. This recording (played live at https://dogglounge.com radio) is heavier on the tech house than the normal DL deep house or straight-up house. But, I like it.

I was out of control on this one - and I don't mean in a good way. There were just a few songs that didn't fit with their prior, or following, songs as well as I wanted. I just didn't feel like I had a handle on the set.
I'm actually just being hard on myself; it isn't terrible. It's just that - at the time - it felt like it was a ship wreck.
Summer is here. Wheee! That is all.

One of the other station DJs wasn’t playing in his slot on this Friday, and I had some free time. So I jumped right in, and played for a bit over an hour. Not a full 2-hour set, but it’s all the time I had.

Sooo, this set got done with little prep, because I was watching the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Chargers in an NFL playoff game (instead of preparing the set). Go Pats!
But, it turned out to be an excellent set. I’m quite pleased with how it came out, both from a musical and mixing perspective. I hope you enjoy streaming it from Soundcloud via your phone + bluetooth speaker, or your Sonos system, or … you way!

Yeah, Daylight Saving Time has ended for the year. Winter is approaching. The sun is setting at 4 freakin' 30 in the afternoon. This is waaaaay "too early" for the sunlight to go away.
I like this set. There's clearly an arc from deep house thru straight-up house to tech house. If I had a couple of transitions to do over (shortening the fade), I'd be happy to have those back. But, this worked pretty well, I think.

An after-party set; it was late, but the place was still bumpin', so it called for all-techno all the time. I love playing this stuff. I had no real centering for the song selection here, other than just how each one felt. Set title comes from the fact that - although it's fall here in New England - the sun time is still "lasting" nicely enough into the evening to make me happy. ;-)

I recently had a chance to both spin tunes & go dancing at a fun event. I was (am) still in a mood for that when I did this set. So it trends a bit more towards danceable music than background deep house.
I note that I got to stand behind the legendary Carl Cox in the DJ booth for some time at the recent event. Watching how he worked the equipment taught me somethings I wasn't doing before, that I'm now trying to incorporate into my technique. I think I'm better for it.

Look - it's late August, and there's no denying that the sun is setting earlier here in Boston. BUT, it's still light enough int the evenings to have a nice dinner outdoors, and enjoy a warm sunset. Thus, the title. This mix is pretty much straight-down-the-middle of the Dogglounge sound. Enjoy.

It was a cloudy, slightly quiet Sunday in Boston when I did this set, and so the song selection reflects it. Late in the set, folks asked if I might go a bit long, so I did; BUT, I don't really like the last 2-3 songs, or the mixes. So, well, ok - it happens.

I was in Ibiza during the blood moon of August 2018, and I hadn't yet had a chance to do a show since then. But the viewing of it from the White Island was amazing, and left a lasting impression in my memory. So, this set is the kind of thing I might have played that night had I been spinning on at someplace like Blue Marlin, or another lovely beach club.

Voodoo Lopez and Unknown Tone - the DJs who normally have the Friday afternoon times - were both watching the World Cup, and weren't going to play their sets. Since I didn't have as much drive to do that, I filled in. (Wait for Le Tour; I won't be playing in July!)
This went 3 hours instead of my normal 2. Since it was Friday Night (by many listener's clocks), I went a bit more clubby as the set went on. Hope you enjoy.

So, this one was for me - less for my live listeners. My show time is 4pm Eastern on Sunday evening. Mostly, listeners at the station then are looking for mid-tempo deep house. BUT, I felt like I wanted to play the kind of set that I'd play if I were trying to get people dancing. So I lost a few listeners during the live set, but hopefully ended up with a good mix to listen to on Friday or Saturday evening before you go out.
This was the first set I played as an official resident at Dogglounge.com. It was the first of a new "phase" in my DJing career.

This is the weekend after the celebration of Thanksgiving Day in the U.S., during which much excess of food & drink is consumed (myself included). The set also has a decided disco slant in the 2nd half, which brought to mind the excesses of Studio 54 in its heyday.

I had A Big Mess Of Wires in my DJ setup, because I'd torn it down & put it together right before the set. Sadly, it meant I had the sound card setting on "Phono" (vs. Line) for the first 4 tunes, and there was all low-end, no high-end. Fortunately I figured the problem out, but remained a bit flustered for the rest of the set. A few other things went wrong. But, here ya go.

For this set I was using full-on pro gear: Pioneer CDJ-2000nexus and DJM-900nexus. Stuff the big boys play at every club. Sadly, this is about $5k of gear, and I don't own it, so I don't play on it as frequently as I need to to keep my skills sharp. Since I've got some dates coming up where I need to be on that gear, so I borrowed some to freshen up.

I had guests coming over for a backyard BBQ dinner after the set. It was hot out, and we'd be eating hot BBQ ribs. So, "grilled". Note: This set is about 10 minutes short of my normal 2 hours; I had to quit early to pick up all my DJ wiring before guests arrived.

September 11 is a difficult day for me. It is the anniversary day of my wife’s and my wedding, so it ought to be super-happy.
But it’s also is the anniversary of the tragedy that happened in NYC, when planes hit the World Trade Center, killing over 3,000 people. This evil gets remembered by society at large on this day, so it’s difficult for my wife and to feel like it is a wonderful anniversary day. (For many years, we left the USA during this date just to escape the press remembrances.)
So this day’s set was about saying “No” to being dragged down by the terrible memories (and “No” to the evil they represent), and “Yes” to being uplifted by remembering the wonderful years with my wife (and “Yes” to good music). I didn’t make a full-on “love” set; just played happy music that my wife was happy to hear while I played.

Outside the window of my in-home studio the leaves on the trees are starting to turn yellow and fall to the ground. I love summer, but fall in New England is a glorious time. The weather is awesome, the colors of the trees become incredible, and the feeling of holidays approaching is fun. So, seasons move on, and we must live with it. (Though none of this inspired my set – just the set name & artwork! 😀 )

So, well, I gotta admit that the live set of this show had a few … problems. Stupid, lazy DJ mistakes, like not having the volume down on a channel when I’m previewing the next track, and crap like that. I fixed it all in post-production (pre-podcast-release), but it doesn’t let me out of the obligation to admit I had some broken bits in this set. Thus, the title….
Also, I had just watched an awesome house music production video by Giom, so I played a few of his tracks as thanks.

I hadn't planned on spinning a set on NY Day; it's a holiday, right? But around 15:45, I realized I had nothing to do. So I decided to spin. I had to set up all my DJ equipment, though, as I'd taken it down for parties over the holiday. So I actually had a bit of a mistake during the 2nd track. (I remastered it to correct this error.)
Interestingly, the tunes from the set turn out to either be 3-5 years old, or less than 6 months old. Not intentional - just ... full circle on Deep House style.

This date was on a weekend when the USA was deeply fractured over President Trump's executive order on immigrants entering the USA. It fractured our country. I tried to bring themes of love & open arms into the mix (though with only "ok" result).

Though winter wasn't terrible here in the Northeast USA, I'm so happy to have longer, warm days that I couldn't help myself: I wanted a summery, beach-party type set. So the variety is a bit broad, and not super chill, but hopefully fun.

The first half of this is the usual Dogglounge fare - deep house, some nu-disco, etc. The second half tends towards Tech House more than the usual DL stuff. Much of it comes from releases intended for Ibiza and Miami 2017 beach clubbing.
It's also a bit shorter than the normal 2 hours. Apparently I spaced out and played a track (or two?) twice. (Bad DJ!) So I edited those out in post-production, which left it short of the normal time. But it's still a good set, IMO.

I'm headed to Ibiza this summer, and WISH I had some place to spin there. It is a "bucket-list" item for me to do so.
This set has tunes that seem like what I'd want to hear as the sun goes down on a warm, happy, Ibiza afternoon with a glass of Rosé in-hand, standing among a beach-full of lounge chairs with a no-name, but really good DJ (like, me!) spinning tunes that gets everyone dancing and puts a smile on their faces.

This set is right down the middle of the Dogglounge sound - at least my feeling about DL sound is. I tend to get a little clubby in the last couple of tracks - but that's just who I am.
I seem to be on a streak of naming my sets based on my feeling about the weather. Well, it's June, and here in New England, it's still cool (55F, 12C), and I'm still "anticipating" the onset of REAL summer. Please....

Since there are lots of fathers out there that grew up in the Disco era, I thought it would be fun to do a disco-themed set - BUT, make it more modern by using either reworks of old Disco tracks that are more DJ friendly, or fully-new Nu-Disco / Indie Dance tracks.

Not sure what to say about this set. I felt inspired by the minimalism of opening couple of tunes, and the closing one. (Thus the title - and cover art.) So I stayed in that vein - a bit. I tilted towards some normal deep house in the middle, but this one is a bit different for me. And fun to have played.
I also discovered a new producer this week, and about 1/3 the tunes are from this guy (Iron Curtis).

No real reason for the title. I just felt comfortable doing the set. I wasn't sweating what track to play next, all the broadcast tech was working, and I had a glass of wine (though sadly not an ocean view) during the set. So, the title emerged from that as I was doing post-broadcast mastering.

I have an original song in this mix, and I felt like (for the first time) like I didn't struggle with the technology to make it - so things were "looking up" for me. But, I've already done a podcast by that name, and Mixcloud seemed to be getting confused (when I did tracklist time stamping). So, I just renamed the podcast (since I could use the artwork because I has a person "looking down".)

This week I went to a club in Brooklyn with 4 hours of great DJs form 8-midnight, and the George Clinton live from 12-2. This got my brain in the funky mode. My crate is not super-deep in funky house, and I don't know that end of my crate well enough. So I think I could have done better on the sequencing of these tracks. But, I had fun, and think I need to play this stuff more. It's so fun to dance to!

I loved the sound in the kick drum from a couple of the tunes in the November podcast by Shur-I-Kan (https://www.mixcloud.com/shurikan/). The sound is like what a kick sounds like when a drummer puts a pillow into the drum cavity of a kick. It sounds more like (wait for it ...) a soft thump than a crisp, hard kick. So I tried to put together a bunch of songs that shared that characteristic. I picked roughly half the songs in the 30 minutes before the set started (partly by simply choosing some of the same ones Shur-I-Kan played, then riffed on the idea), and the rest during the set.

It's been a couple of weeks since I played the set, so I don't remember what sound-center I wanted for this set, or why I called it "flip". Oh well.
There's no real music motivation for the set; I just played just what struck my fancy that day. However, the title & cover art are inspired by having just seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi a couple of days before I played the set. (The crystal / ice wolf is an animal that plays a notable role in the movie.)

This was pretty out of character for Dogglounge. DL audiences tend to prefer deep, soulful, jazzy house. But - it was Friday night, no other DJs were playing live on DL, and I felt like a party.
So I removed the normal Dogglounge guard rails, and let loose with a more tech house / techno / ibiza-club style set. Still not full-on club-style, where it'd be 3 mins / track, with lots of movement.

IMO, the mix really starts around 30:00 minutes in. That first half-hour was sitting waiting for the car to start rolling, and we were all just chillin' a bit....
