As we enter chapter 5, we enter into a new phase of Paul's theological exposition to the Roman church. After explaining the plight of humanity and our need for God to make us righteous through faith in him who was raised from the dead--Jesus Christ--Paul now turns to explore the meaning of justification. While this section has traditionally been interpreted as the progression of a believer through different stages, it can perhaps be better understood as descriptive of the nature of justification. In chapter 5, Paul explores how Christ's death on the cross reconciles the ungodly to God. He turns then, to compare Jesus with another well known biblical figure, Adam. He looks at the legacies and consequences of the actions of both, and how the power of the cross continues to ripple through the ages.

"For what shall we say about Abraham...?" Abraham, found in the narrative of the book of Genesis, was venerated by the first-century Jews as their "father". Why then, does Paul claim that, "the promise to Abraham and his offspring [was] that he would be heir of the world"? Paul himself could be considered to have revered Abraham, not only for his piety, but primarily for his response to God when the LORD had made himself known: "Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness" (Gen. 15:6). The Abrahamic narrative is telling about what God's plan is for the world, not just for the Jews. To explain this, Paul compares faith with four different concepts: works, circumcision, law, and sight. Why was his faith counted as righteousness? And why does faith become the rule by which all people, both Jew and Gentile, can be considered children of Abraham?

"None is righteous, no, not one". If you've ever heard a presentation of "the gospel" you have probably heard these words. Paul, creative and gifted as he is, does not draw these words out of thin air. Rather, he pieces together a string of Old Testament references to assert that humans cannot be justified by their works alone. While this is true for both Jews and Gentiles, it appears the former is the target of Paul's argument. In so doing, Paul shows how all of the Scriptures--what we know as the Old Testament, and the Jews as simply the Bible--attest to the question that the Jews now face: if they are advantaged over the Gentiles, are they truly any better off?

If humans in general are under the wrath of God, are the Jews exempt from this based on their possession of the law? Two schools of thought come into conflict here. The first is the Jewish conviction that their corporate election, plus their sincere intention to obey the law, sufficed for salvation. The second school of thought suggests that a saving relationship with God comes, as it did for Abraham, through human response to God's grace expressed in his promise and not through the Mosaic covenant. Paul explores both of these in the latter half of chapter 2. If possession of the Mosaic covenant, however, is not the means of righteousness and salvation, then does the Jew have any advantage at all? To this, Paul responds emphatically, "YES!" Yet, if the Jew is advantaged, what do we make of the Jews history of unfaithfulness to the covenant? In asking this question, we find that time after time, God's faithfulness is more powerful than the covenantal dysfunction of human beings.

Today, we journey further into Paul's exposition of the problem of man. He turns from all of humanity who turn from God--and thus God hands them over to their sin--to the hypocrite who judges them, presuming upon God's patience and kindness, so that they can continue in their sin unjustly. But God is not taken advantage of in this scenario, for he judges impartially according to works. Paul props up a hypothetical situation to illustrate this point. People who do good gain eternal life. People who do evil will suffer wrath. This begs the question: can one gain eternal life outside of Jesus? Does the Apostle Paul, servant of Jesus Christ, contradict himself by saying that God will give glory, honor, and peace to everyone who does good?

It's one of our favorite things to say about the Bible: "The bible was written for us; but it wasn't written to us." The writings of the Bible came from contexts, contexts that were not our own. In the last episode, we explored the life and ministry of the author of the letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul. Now, we'll take a look at the letter itself, asking questions about its basic composition and purpose. Investigating these contexts leads us to fascinating revelations about the specific scenarios Paul addressed and gives us a guiding framework for how to interpret a letter not written to us, but which is most definitely for us, as Christians throughout the last two thousand years have recognized.

What is "the gospel"? It's a word that saturates the Christian world. We use it to describe a message, a story, music, and truth. But what did it mean to Paul's audience--a people living under the rule and influence of the Roman emperor--and what did it mean to Paul? Paul starts his letter right here: with the gospel, the euangelion, or the good news. He explains what the gospel is, what it does, and only then does he describe in depth the theology behind this, and how it applies to the Roman church. It's a new proclamation of an old promise fulfilled: that the hoped for king of Israel has come to bring about blessing for the nation and the whole world as they come under his rule. Thus, we have Paul preaching this message of hope and unity for both Jew and Gentile to a church divided largely by these ethnic boundary markers.

Paul takes a sharp turn from his brief explanation of the nature of the gospel to begin explaining why humanity needs it. Humans find themselves in a predicament. They are unrighteous, putting aside God's will, rule, and blessing for a path of their own choosing, a path of destruction. This problem isn't a new problem. It tracks back to the very first humans. Humans have, as Paul describes, made three exchanges, and these exchanges illicit divine responses. As we study the end of chapter 1, keep in mind that this is only the first movement in a theologically dense argument. The beginning of the letter then, is exploring humanity's primary problem. As the letter progresses, the problem will be explored more specifically; only later will the solution to the problem be revealed, and much later the pastoral implications will be addressed.

Welcome to Season 4 of Not So Secret Bible, where we'll be studying the context and content of the book of Romans. As the Gospel narratives bleed into the Acts narrative, we're introduced to an individual named Saul of Tarsus. Saul enters the story as a Pharisee, a Jew, a Roman citizen, and a man zealous for the God of Israel's will to be done in the tradition of his people. He's portrayed as a persecutor of the Jesus-movement, approving of the killing of Christians, and planning to arrest more in Damascus. On his way though, he has an encounter that forces him to reconsider in every way the God of Israel and his own place in the world. So what causes a man like this to reverse his course? Saul would later--at least in the New Testament story--come to be known as Paul, a leader in the growing Jesus-movement he previously persecuted, and perhaps the most important person to Christianity--outside of Jesus--that has ever lived. His presence, voice, and writings would shake up the known world like it had never been before. Join us in exploring the life, message, and mission of this fascinating character as we attempt to peek into the mind and motivations of the author of the letter to the Romans.

Joshua begins to allot the land to the Israelite tribes. We start by looking at the Transjordanian tribes (east of the Jordan), Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. As we look at the land allotted to each tribe, we study the men from which each tribe came, these sons of Jacob/Israel. If you're wanting to do some reading in advance (or after), read through the story of Joseph in Genesis 37-50, or you can just hone in on chapters 48-49, which help to guide the discussion on the tribes of Israel. Israel is just coming off of an incredible victory over Jericho. It is clear that their God is with them. In chapter 7, we immediately see a difference. "But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. We began the Not So Secret Bible podcast on April 11, 2020 to connect with our local congregation during the COVID-19 pandemic and at the same time satisfy our geeky need to talk about the Bible. Our decision to start with a study on the Gospel of John was an easy choice for us. We wanted to start with one of the four gospels so we chose John and never looked back. Chapter 21, the final chapter of John is a great reminder that Jesus' story doesn't end with His death and resurrection. His story continues not only in John chapter 21 but also to this very day! Following Jesus' resurrection, He appears to Mary Magdalene and the disciples! Afterward some of the disciples return home and start fishing!?! Jesus' appears again and helps them with their fishing venture, which wasn't going well, and to have some pointed conversations. Why does Jesus appear at this time? What more could he add to the already mind boggling resurrection from the dead? Why does he focus so much on Peter? Why so many fish??? Brandon J. O'Brien (PhD, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is Director of Content Development and Distribution for Redeemer City to City, an organization that supports church planting in global cities. He is the author of many books, including Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes and Not From Around Here: What Unites Us, What Divides Us, and How We Can Move Forward. He jumps on the podcast to talk with Michael and Troy and tell us a little about himself, his journey with Jesus, and how we interpret ourselves through the lens of Scripture.

"When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered" (John 18:1).
Jesus crosses the brook Kidron and meets his betrayer with a horde of soldiers to arrest him. He's marched before the former high priest and interrogated. He's given over to the Roman governor with the hope (of the religious leaders) that he'll be put to death. And in the midst of this episode, the Roman governor asks a poignant question: "What is truth?" Open up your Bible, and join Michael, Troy, & Zane as they wade through chapter 18!

"A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world" (John 16:21).
Throughout his farewell discourse, Jesus' message to his disciples has consistently revolved around the fact that he's going away, things are going to be hard...but that's actually better for them. In this last section of the discourse, Jesus explains why that's the case. Also, we're recording pretty late (or...after dark), so don't mind us getting a little slap happy! It's time to open up your Bible and study John 16 with Michael, Troy, and Zane!

Jesus busts out some botanical imagery in John 15 to illustrate his relationship with his disciples.
