Nic, founder of the @Unsettling_Mormonism project, joins us to discuss how Mormonism views the land now called the "United States," the Indigenous peoples of past and present who have resisted US settler colonialism, and themselves, who they deem the "faithful." We look at the links between Mormonism and US imperialism, and of course we wrap it up linking socialism and decolonization!

Preachers, poets, graphic designers, dancers, singers, painters, musicians, and others! There are lots of ways one might be an artist and creator, but to what ends are we making art? In whose interest does our art serve?

d.c.R. Pollock (Dave) read Mao's speech "Talks at the Yenan Forum on Literature and Art" with us in preparation for our discussion on art and the work of the revolutionary artist. Also mentioned: Constructive Criticism by Gracie Lyons.

Discussed:
- the class and political character of art
- the role of cultural revolution and the work of revolutionary artists
- how revolutionary communism (maoism) can enable artists to effectively serve the people
- the relation between the artist and the community they create for

This is the concluding episode of our four-part "Lessons from Lenin" series in which Chase reflects on three lessons generated from his reading of Lenin's What is to Be Done? For the final episode, we discuss the whats and whys of our "principal task," the need for a Maoist Party in the U.S. to be produced by real mass work, and what it will take for revolutionaries to win the trust of our neighbors, working class and internally colonized nations.

Marxist scholar of Biblical Studies and Religion, Christina Petterson, joins us to discuss her essay "Apostles of Revolution? Marxism and Biblical Studies". We discuss the ways in which historical materialism is fundamental for correctly analyzing the conditions and contradictions in which the scriptures were produced, how both the scriptures and historical interpretations (including our own) are products of class struggle, how the 19th and 20th century international communist movement greatly influenced the field of biblical studies, how ideological struggle has shaped analysis and interpretations of the scriptures, early Christian communism, and the role religion and biblical study/interpretation tend to play (or alternatively could play) in today's struggle between capitalism and communism, colonialism and decolonization.

Mentioned: Rosa Luxemburg's essay that discusses the Church of Acts

This episode is part one to a three-part series on Charles Bettleheim's Class Struggles in the USSR, First Period: 1917-1923. We hope you find this series helpful and check out Chase's 7 pg. summary of each section of this 600 pg. book previously released in patreon!

Cameron joins me to discuss both history and theory in this mini-series.

This particular episode discusses the class contradictions of Russia on the eve of 1917, socialism as a period of transition and continued class struggle between capitalism and communism, and the role of the Maoist party, the proletariat, and the masses in revolutionary struggle.

You can find the pdf here, but this is one of the only volumes you can still find in paperback.

After nearly three years of solo-podcasting, Faith and Capital is no longer just a Chase project. Chase is being joined by Chris as an official co-host! And to start off 2022, we thought we'd talk about how we understand 1) being religious and communist, and 2) the dialectical relationship of justice and liberation.

Kateri from Geez Magazine joins the pod to discuss the soon-to-be-released issue, "Sound the Trumpet." We talk Jubilee and the importance of making Jubilee not just something we read about in the scriptures but something we ought to fight to realize historically and materially today. If the concept of Jubilee is to have any meaning for us today, it will be so in light of imperialism and colonialism.

Tripp and Chase are back! Christianity and Marxism? It's a Homebrewed Christianity and Faith and Capital mash-up for a follow up to our previous episode on being Christian and Socialist. This episode is a Q&A where Tripp and I respond to 10ish questions submitted to us by listeners on all things faith, the bible, revolutionary violence, process theology, maoism, etc. Twas a grand ole time!

Questions:
00:08:20 -- What is the Gospel if seen from a materialist perspective?
00:11:10 -- Given so much damage and baggage from White Christianity, what keeps you a Christian?
00:15:10 -- The Bible talks about the evil of riches and exploitation. Is there anything in the Bible that helps us think about the evils of capitalism?
00:25:40 -- What is Democratic Socialism? What is Maoism? What is Organic Marxism? And how do they resonate with our faith?
00:50:10 -- How does Process Theology work alongside anti-authoritarian marxist and anarchist traditions and its critique of omnipotence help us step toward a more anarchistic approach to these conversations?
00:59:10 -- Can revolutionary violence be reconciled with Christian faith?
01:19:10 -- What's the difference between literal resurrection and historical resurrection?
01:22:50 -- Concretely, how would you envision change coming to make a better world? What are some concrete actions that would need to take place and how does your faith speak to that?

How might Mao Zedong help us become better followers of Christ?

This episode is a deep dive into Mao’s essay On Contradiction. The point of this episode is to assist in helping us understand the six points of the text and to encourage using this framework for analyzing and transforming the political, social, and spiritual contradictions of our personal and communal lives for the good! This text is also key for understanding Marxism-Leninism-Maoism.

We talk a good bit about dogmatism throughout the conversation. But what’s most unique about this all is that we use Mao’s essay to reflect upon sin, our theology, christian practice, and church life.

Timeline:
9:10 -- The Two World Outlooks
26:25 -- The Universality of Contradiction
47:35 -- The Particularity of Contradiction
56:40 -- The Principle Contradiction and the Principle Aspect of a Contradiction
1:13:50 -- The Identity (Unity) and Struggle of the Aspects of a Contradiction
1:22:16 -- The Place of Antagonism in Contradiction
1:26:50 -- Dogmatism, Revisionism, and Reformism (this last part of the timeline is not a seventh point but addresses Mao's concern of dogmatism and revisionism!)

Is voting every two and four years the most political thing you can do? No. Are electoral politics the primary means through which God moves and acts in the world? Hellll no. So let's briefly talk about voting, and then spend some time thinking about that which is wayyy more deserving of our energy and time as people with agency and power: organizing.

Sean Capener (@CapenerSean) wants us to think capitalism, anti-blackness, and Christianity at the same time. In this episode, Sean interrogates what 'whiteness' and 'blackness' are, the emergence of anti-blackness and its persistence, liberalism's progress narrative, and the Church's failure to adequately acknowledge and confront its internal contradictions and tensions drawn along lines of race. Maybe Du Bois was on to something when he said, "Whiteness is the ownership of the earth forever and ever, Amen!"

For most of us, housing is primarily used as a home. But for financial and landlord capitalists, housing is, first and foremost, an instrument for extracting wealth and maximizing profits. The valuing of housing as a means for profit-maximization is contradictory to the valuing of housing as home, and increasingly under capitalism, financial capital has hyper-commodified this most basic human necessity. Ismaail Qaiyim, a participant in Charlotte, North Carolina's Housing Justice Coalition, joins me in a conversation on housing under capitalism and the various roles that race plays in the unequal distribution of housing in the US.

What does your mortgage, your car loan, your credit card debt, your school loans, your medical debt, and austerity measures imposed upon by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have to do with Jesus's ministry and the witness of the early church? "The problem is greed." We've all heard it, but might there be more to "the problem" than individual greed? This episode reflects on the nuance of the belief that "the problem" is greed. Then we suggest an alternative analysis that locates "the problem" elsewhere. Finally, we finish with some of the implications this alternative analysis might leave us to wrestle with as persons of faith.

We know, we know...we would be so unfree if it weren't for capitalism! Or...would we? In this episode, we'll reflect on the Colossians 3 "Peace of Christ." Next, we'll think about the common way of understanding freedom under capitalism. Then, we offer an alternative way of thinking about freedom under capitalism. And, finally, we talk alternative freedoms and unfreedoms that we might want to consider.
