This interview was a treat! Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS are joined by our listener favorite Jeff Walter, PT, DPT, NCS to talk to Ian Curthoys, Professor Emeritus. This discussion covers different ways sound and vibration can stimulate the vestibular system, and how it can be used for diagnostic purposes at bedside.

If Ian Curthoys' name sounds familiar... it's because it should! In 1988 Halmagyi and Curthoys introduced a subjective test of semicircular canal function—the head impulse test (HIT)!Read his original article here: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaneurology/article-abstract/587833

This is a new and special episode of Talk Dizzy To Me that we couldn't be more excited to share!

Jeff Walter, PT, DPT, NCS is back to talk with Danielle Tolman, PT, DPT and Abbie Ross, PT, DPT, NCS about an awesome (and challenging) infrared video goggle video submitted by Dan Streeter, PT, DPT, COMT.

This episode breaks down this one video, isolated just to this point in time. All of you vestibuloholics out there may be itching to hear about the whole case... but we're keeping it simple. Instead we take this video step by step to discuss the possibilities of what may be happening physiologically, and then discuss our clinical decision making for determining next steps. Our hope is that this episode helps to give clinicians different perspectives, as well as more confidence with tackling challenging cases.

To say that this episode is loaded with Clinical Pearls would be an understatement! If you liked this episode, please be sure to let us know! We'll be sure to include more like this in the future if you feel that this type of content is valuable to you.

Email Abbie@BalancingActRehab.com if you have a cool or challenging goggle video you'd like to share. You may just get your own episode!

In this episode, Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS are joined by Dr. Debby and Dr. Mark to discuss visual dysfunction and the impact it can have on vestibular patients.

Dr. Debby Feinberg is an optometrist, and Dr. Mark Rosner is an Emergency Physician. They are Co-Founders and Co-Directors of the NeuroVisual Medicine Institute in Michigan, which trains other optometrists to become NeuroVisual Specialists.

Dr. Feinberg has been performing pioneering work with Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD), which is a condition where a vision misalignment creates difficulties with the two eyes working together to create a single 3-dimensional image, as well as difficulties with the two eyes following that image as it moves.

Dr. Mark Rosner is the Director of Education and Research at the NeuroVisual Medicine Institute. He has been actively involved in developing the specialty of NeuroVisual Medicine and in Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) research since 2005. He has led the effort to validate the Binocular Vision Dysfunction Questionnaire, which is used to identify patients who most likely have BVD that will benefit from treatment.

Vestibular Specialists Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS are joined by Sam Owen and Dr. Didier Depireux, Ph.D to talk about their company Otolith Labs and the device that they have been developing for years to help mitigate dizziness and motion sickness: The OtoBand.

"Otolith’s patented non-invasive head-worn technology uses precisely tuned vibrations to interact with the motion sensors in the inner ear, mitigating the symptoms of vertigo and motion sickness. This novel technology has been validated by several clinical studies, including multiple independent studies at universities and with leading automotive manufacturers." Otolith Labs was recently granted De Novo approval by the FDA which provides a pathway to classify novel medical devices for which general controls alone provide reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness for the intended use, but for which there is no legally marketed predicate device.

This week, Drs Danielle Tolman, PT and Abbie Ross, PT, NCS speak with Cathy Epley about her father's lasting legacy in the field of Vestibular Rehabilitation. Dr. John Epley, M.D. flipped the theory behind positional vertigo on it's head with the introduction of his particle theory. It took a lot of patience and perseverance to reach the level of acceptance that his theory has today. At this point in time, you can't mention the word "vertigo" without hearing the words "Epley maneuver" in the same sentence! We really enjoyed talking with Cathy about her father, and look forward to having her on again.

Dr. Shin Beh, MD , is one of few U.S. neurologists who specializes in evaluating and nonsurgically treating vestibular disorders – including vertigo, dizziness, and problems with balance – and visual disorders arising from brain abnormalities. As the founding Director of UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Vestibular Neurology and Neuro-Visual Disorders Clinic, Dr. Beh sees many people who have nearly lost hope of having their problems correctly diagnosed and treated.

Here on Talk Dizzy To Me, we sing Dr. Beh's praises, alongside with one of our favorite guests, Alicia Wolf (the Dizzy Cook). On this episode Abbie and Dani dive a little deeper with some generalized treatment and diagnosis questions, as well as some more clinician based topics. From VNGs and goggle testing, to treatment devices, Dr. Beh has the 411.

In this episode Dr. Danielle Tate, PT, and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS briefly talk about post-COVID diagnosis and post-vaccination dizziness. It should be noted that most of the discussion in this episode is based off of individual clinical experience, and is not validated in any way by research. As discussed, there is very little current research on the relationship between COVID-19 and its effects on the vestibular system. This episode is only meant to start a conversation and open a door for additional feedback from those who practice vestibular therapy, or from those who have been experiencing symptoms post COVID diagnosis or post-vaccination.

On Day 5 of the Vestibular Disorder's Association's Virtual Vestibular Conference, Dr. Kathleen Stross, PT, CHC gave a presentation on the role of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine for vestibular patients which was then followed by a live Q&A session. Today, Dr. Danielle Tate, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS recap the day's presentation as well as the conference as a whole

Many people with chronic vestibular dysfunction have found that by making changes to their lifestyle and managing their overall wellness they are less likely to experience symptoms, and better able to cope when symptoms do arise. In this session we will present evidence about Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) treatment approaches – such as dietary changes, supplements, body manipulation and exercise - and explain when they are and are not recommended.

We're very excited to have been joined by patient panelists The Dizzy Cook Alicia Wolf (https://thedizzycook.com/) and Toby Henson (instagram @octoberhenson). Their panel was be moderated by the one and only Laura Cala (instagram @dizzy.diaries) The whole week of presentations are available for only $20 on VeDA's website here: https://vestibular.org/vvcreplay/

The Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA) is hosting their first ever Virtual Vestibular Conference! Dr. Danielle Tate, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS are your hosts/moderators for the week. Today's talk was about Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) and was presented by Dr. Janene Holmberg PT, DPT, NCS.

Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) is being increasingly used to explain vestibular symptoms without an obvious cause. Many patients are confused about this diagnosis – is it a physiological or psychological condition? Will I ever get better? In the session we touched on some things to help you better understand what PPPD is and isn't, how it is diagnosed and treated, and what outcomes you can expect from treatment.

Today’s webinar is actually still up and available to watch! Due to technical difficulties, our extremely forgiving and flexible webinar attendees followed us over to the Vestibular Today Facebook page for the live session. The Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA) is hosting their first ever Virtual Vestibular Conference and Dr. Danielle Tate, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS are your hosts/moderators for the week. Today's talk was about Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy presented by Tara Denham, PT, MA.

Evidence shows that Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) can be effective in the management of symptoms associated with many vestibular disorders. While it is natural to display avoidance behaviors in order to prevent symptoms from being triggered, vestibular rehabilitation programs tailored to your symptoms and functional deficits can help facilitate improved function and quality of life with reduced symptoms over time. In this session you will learn how VRT works, who is a good candidate for VRT, and what you can expect from a VRT program.

Be sure watch the patient panel where Ashley Virgilio (www.ashaligned.com) and Alex & Nancy Shaddock (https://www.youtube.com/user/nfshaddock) will be joining in to talk about their experiences in VRT as patients!
