Every day we make decisions. Some big, some small, some that can shape the direction of our lives. As we kick off our new series “Decided: Better Choices, Better Life,” we look at Daniel and the choices he made when faced with pressure and temptation. Through Scripture, we discover practical ways to make better choices: putting God first, letting our values drive our decisions, creating distance from temptation, counting the cost, and planning our escape when we’re faced with difficult situations.

In John 4:1-42, Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well and reveals that there is more happening around us than we often see. While the disciples were focused on the immediate, Jesus challenged them to “open your eyes” and recognize the spiritual harvest all around them. When we open our eyes, we may discover that God is already at work in ways we never expected.

In this one off episode, Chris addresses the topic of discipleship, emphasizing its significance as a continuous journey rather than a series of disconnected actions. Drawing from definitions by notable spiritual authors like Dallas Willard and John Mark Comer, this teaching highlights that true discipleship involves actively living out the teachings of Jesus in daily life. The speaker critiques a common focus on avoiding sin rather than embracing the opportunities within God's kingdom. Further, Jesus' parables about treasure and pearls illustrate that seeking the kingdom should prioritize opportunity over perceived costs. The teaching encourages reflection on a personal commitment to discipleship through asking for guidance, abiding in scripture, and making intentional decisions to follow Jesus wholeheartedly. Ultimately, this approach aims to cultivate a joyful and transformative relationship with God while fostering spiritual growth within communities.

In this episode, Chris introduces the old Children's book "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day," using it as a metaphor for the universal experience of bad days. He draws parallels between this concept and the biblical context of Zephaniah, highlighting that the prophet addressed people facing severe oppression and despair during a tumultuous time marked by corruption and impending conquest. Despite their suffering, Zephaniah conveys God’s promise of protection and joy to those who feel beaten down. This message is echoed throughout scripture as a reminder not to fear but to rejoice in God's presence amidst adversity. Chris emphasizes that joy can be found even in dire circumstances, urging listeners to embrace hope through faith while acknowledging their fears.
