In our recent interview with blogger and entrepreneur Chris Myles, he inspired us with his determination, focus, and entrepreneurial mindset. His purpose led the way to his abundance – retiring his wife, becoming his own boss, and leaving a legacy for his son Benji. As we further reflect on what it means to fail forward (one of the principles Chris lives by), here are some additional takeaways.

Takeaways:

  • Mindset is where it all starts. What you believe, you can achieve. It really is that simple.
  • Take stock of where you are and plan out where you want to be. That’s the start of execution.
  • Mentorship matters. We are surrounded by resources! It’s our job to take massive action.
  • Who not how – focus on who can help you, instead of how to get things done yourself.
  • Don’t dwell. There will be bumps. Accept them. Move on. Do better tomorrow.
  • Be in service to others. When you focus on the value you bring, the rest falls into place.

It’s officially the holiday season. Do you know someone that gives you anxiety just thinking about the dynamic they’ll create at your upcoming holiday festivity? A listener wrote in asking us to address this issue. Whether it’s a friend or family member, the key to a peaceful holiday experience is to be proactive. Here are some considerations.

Episode highlights:

  • Put the mirror on yourself. Think about what behaviors you can adjust to improve interactions.
  • Distance yourself at gatherings and perhaps even outside of in-person settings
  • Creating space may be beneficial for you and the other person
  • If the relationship is truly important to you, have a heart-to-heart conversation
  • Consider the framework: I feel…, I don’t want…, I do want…, what can we do about it…
  • Adhere to the boundaries that preserve your peace and well-being
  • Remember that not every person deserves a front row seat in your life

On the previous episode we interviewed our inspiring friend Francine Rivera, successful entrepreneur, lifestyle consultant, the founder of FrancineRivera.com, author, certified health and wellness coach, and award-winning saleswoman. We explored what it means to live a life untapped. Here the takeaways that hit home for us!

Takeaways:

  • Don’t burn yourself out to keep your family warm; burnout has a negative downstream effect
  • We can be our worst enemy trying to achieve perfection instead of appreciating our progress
  • Social media has highlighted how much comparison is thrusted into our lives (not healthy!)
  • It’s not time management, it’s personal management – how you manage yourself
  • Make yourself a priority even if it starts with 15 more minutes a day just for YOU
  • What’s measured is managed – start writing down the things you want to see results in
  • Don’t be afraid to make a budget and become financially more adept
  • An excuse is a well-played lie, so don’t make excuses, choose to take action

Our caller is seeking advice on getting unstuck. She’s gotten through challenges but needs that nudge to truly breakthrough. Tony Robbins shares a recipe for achieving a breakthrough that we’re breaking down in this episode. The recipe includes managing these 3 things: your state, your story, and your strategy. Let’s get cooking!

Episode highlights:

  • State includes your emotion, what and who you surround yourself with, & the activities you do
  • Reflect on how your state is influenced physically, mentally, and spiritually; adjust accordingly
  • Story is what you tell yourself. Are you living in the past or focused on who you want to be today?
  • Use WAVE (wellness, aspiration, values, elevation); tell yourself something positive for each

    • Wellness – I am healthy and strong
    • Aspiration – I have a growing bank account
    • Values – I am steadfast in my faith
    • Elevation – I will learn something new today
    • Program alarms in your phone with affirmations that you want to remind yourself of
    • Remember that life happens FOR you not to you. Your experiences help you learn and grow.
    • Strategy is your action plan. What are your habits and patterns? What needs to change?
    • Surround yourself with supportive, elevated people and get an accountability partner or group

COVID-19 has certainly impacted our lives and routines. Unexpected change like this can take us off “true north” from our goals and even in our relationships. Ginamarie realized that not going to church over the last 6 months impacted her spirituality in a negative way. She got constructive feedback from her partner Wes and she realized her small millimeter shifts took her off true north. Let’s discover how to pivot when we’re thrown off course.

Episode highlights:

  • Big stressors like a global pandemic can naturally throw us off from being our best selves
  • If you’re taken off course, to get back on track the key is to recalibrate and strategize
  • Take a step back to reflect on where you need to spend more time and attention
  • Accept where you’re at, don’t beat yourself up, and focus on actions for improvement
  • One critical factor to stay on course with your life goals and purpose is accountability
  • Evaluate what accountability looks like for you and readjust if you need to

How do you revitalize intimacy in your relationship? Is this something you or someone you know have ever asked? Our caller Diana and her husband have raised a daughter who has required a substantial amount of their time and energy due to her battle with anxiety, depression, and an eating disorder. Over time, they’ve become more like roommates and co-parents than a married couple. We called on our friend and dual licensed clinical psychologist and professional counselor, Dr. Michelle Mugge to help our caller with rekindling a deeper emotional connection and intimacy in her marriage.

Episode highlights:

  • Reconnecting intimately begins with the emotional connection before the physical connection
  • Communication is the place to start in rekindling connection – set aside intentional time
  • A weekly agreed upon time for uninterrupted communication for at least 30 minutes is ideal
  • A weekly check-in could be as simple as discussing these questions:

    • What went well this week?
    • What did not go well this week?
    • What do you need from me?
    • What are you grateful for?
    • Plan time away just for the two of you. Put effort into making dates special. Get glammed up!
    • Ways to enhance a date: play sentimental music, look at old pictures, hold hands, play a game
    • Communication does not always have to be heavy; it can be playful and fun
    • Make each other as a couple a priority. Schedule the time. Communicate it to others if needed.
    • Consistency is the key to setting the precedence and sustainability that you desire

If you saw your friend’s significant other cheating on her, would you tell her about it? This is a delicate situation with possibly substantial impacts. We received a direct message from a listener asking us to process this, so we do just that on this episode! Find out some things to consider as you debate what to do in sticky situations like this.

Episode highlights:

  • Evaluate the full extent of the situation (e.g., impacted parties, environment, safety, stability, etc.)
  • Be prepared for reactions to be different than you may expect should you decide to speak up
  • If you have the conviction to share, come from a place of love, non-judgment, and support
  • In giving this kind of news, start with sharing your personal worries and be compassionate
  • Another consideration is writing a letter if that method of communication is more comfortable
  • If your friend is coming to you with a gut feeling, you can ask thoughtful open-ended questions
  • Asking questions is a subtle way to provide guidance. It’s an alternate way to bring clarity.
  • There is a price to pay whether or not you decide to tell your friend what you know
  • Ask yourself what you want the end result to be and follow your heart/intuition

In this episode, our caller asks us to talk about keeping score in relationships – what does it look like when two people are keeping track of who brings what to the table? While most people value reciprocity in relationships, effort and contribution is not always created equal. We are going to dig in to how you manage self-awareness and focusing on your part of a relationship.

Episode highlights:

  • Evaluate the intention you have when you are doing acts of service for others
  • Sincere contributions come from your heart without expecting something in return
  • If you are keeping score, ask yourself why. What is causing you to keep score?
  • Take ownership for what’s not working in your relationships and communicate your concerns
  • Set boundaries for the relationships that require them to preserve your energy and peace
  • Understand the “price of admission” for the relationships that you choose
  • Relationships are about give and take, not tit for tat
  • In your relationships, clarify the needs and expectations of the other person

Let’s dive into how to shift yourself into a space of possibility and action so opportunities don’t turn into shoulda, coulda, wouldas. Don’t should on yourself!

Episode highlights:

  • Kick your negative thoughts and replace negative language (e.g., turn can’t into can)
  • When you focus on the prize, you’re less concerned about the price of following your dreams
  • Not everybody needs a front row seat in your life. Preserve your energy for those who deserve it.

In our recent interview with her, Dr. Michelle Mugge reminded us about the importance of self-care, getting in tune with our emotions, and having vulnerable conversations. When patterns like suppressing feelings and emotions occur from traumatic experiences, depression and anxiety can emerge. Developing healthy wellness habits will set us up for a more peaceful and fulfilled life. Here are our key takeaways from the interview.

Takeaways:

  • Follow your heart’s calling, not the vision that others have for your life, it’s YOUR life
  • Self-care isn’t only grand acts; it’s also things like setting boundaries and honest communication
  • Everybody has struggles and it’s normal. It’s important to process those struggles.
  • Therapy can be one way to process difficult trauma that needs healing
  • Don’t avoid conversations that you know you need to have
  • Nurturing relationships requires two-way authentic communication
  • Where you lack data, you make up a story; data provides deeper clarity and understanding
  • Creating a safe and non-judgmental environment, fosters more open communication
  • Successful relationships require evolving both individually and as a couple / unit

Have you ever processed how you tend to deal with conflict and change? Do you react with fight, flight, freeze, or flow? Our caller Danielle inspired today’s episode with her experience and inquiry. Resilience and peace are best achieved in a state of flow. Let’s explore how we can achieve flow in a world where we’re constantly surrounded by the uncontrollable.

Definitions:

  • Fight – resistance and the desire to preserve the status quo
  • Flight – avoidance so as not to face challenge or adversity
  • Freeze – paralysis; not knowing how to react or respond
  • Flow – openness and adaptation to the unexpected

Episode highlights:

  • No reaction is wrong. It’s natural to feel all reactions of fight, flight, freeze, and flow.
  • The desire to control and defensiveness can be easily sparked when resisting unwanted change
  • Freezing can occur in times of overwhelm. The caution is not to ignore the challenges you face.
  • Solutions often are found in the gray area, somewhere between the best & worse case scenarios
  • Start by asking yourself, what’s the outcome I want to achieve? Then shift into possible options.
  • The danger of flight is falling into a pattern of avoidance which manifests into bigger issues later
  • Neutral thinking is a great way to maintain a calm, collected approach to the uncontrollable
  • The ability of flow comes with maturity, intentionality, experience, and practice
  • Flowing starts with reflection and directing your energy inward to what you can control
  • Practices that may help with flow: prayer, exercise, meditation, and mindfulness
  • Thoughts are things and thoughts can propel outcomes, so direct your thoughts accordingly

Sometimes it just takes seeing others do something new or challenging to conjure up the courage to take your own action. Let’s delve into the beauty of courage!

Here are a few highlights from the episode:

  • When you’re questioning a courageous action, ask yourself, what is the worst that could happen?
  • Look to your circle, your kids, or those you admire for inspiration to spark courage within yourself
  • Consider how your acts of courage could inspire others
  • Dedicate time to one thing you want to be courageous at; stay committed and consistent

Whether you are single or in a relationship, you won’t want to miss hearing their candid perspectives and honest advice about what it takes to thrive in a relationship. Our goal is that you come away with hope, excitement, and perhaps even some new things to consider as you continue your own personal journey of having a healthy, happy, thriving partnership.

  • Communicated and revisited expectations are what keep a relationship true north
  • Vulnerability is a critical aspect of mastering meaningful connection and communication
  • A few practices to consider:

    • A weekly relationship review – time to openly connect and give two-way feedback
  • Understanding love languages in a partnership is one way to better connect with each other
  • Carving out dedicated, uninterrupted time for each other every week is important

Our caller, Stephanie asks us: “why is it so hard for women to lift each other up?” We believe that women have a choice about whether they want to compete with one another or compliment and collaborate with each other. In this episode, we discuss the dividends that are paid when we choose collaboration over competition.

Here are a few highlights:

  • When you are secure with who you are, you can confidently celebrate the successes of others
  • Having an attitude of curiosity opens you up to learning from others vs. competing with them
  • Adopting an abundance mindset is knowing that there is always room for everyone to succeed
  • Collaboration is magical – you get inspired, you feel encouraged, and you become energized
  • Givers gain! When you give genuinely to others, you attract reciprocity into your life.
  • Competition can be healthy when your intention is to have fun, grow, and stay motivated
  • Be a SAVER – someone who supports, aligns, value adds, elevates, and rises with others
  • Think about what you would want someone to say at your eulogy – be that person!
  • People may not remember what you say, but they will always remember how you make them feel

Our caller Melinda is battling self-doubt. She is specifically working through her battle with weight loss where in her heart she believes she can make positive strides, but her head is telling her otherwise. How can Melinda productively process her self-doubt to gain confidence in her ability to lose weight? Let’s process!

Some of the highlights from our discussion are:

  • Distance yourself from those who come from a place of judgement
  • Surround yourself with people who support your dreams and aspirations
  • You are the story you tell yourself and you have the power to change your story
  • You become what you believe, and you act accordingly
  • Name your self-doubt, call it out, and turn it into power that can fuel you
  • Manifest what you want by changing the words you tell yourself
  • Write down your self-limiting beliefs and recognize that they are self-inflicted
  • Saying that you can’t means saying that you won’t which ultimately means that you don’t want to
  • Write affirmations and put them in places that you will see them
  • Speak what you want into existence; say it out loud and repeat it!
  • Play music that shifts you into uplifted energy
  • Be gracious with yourself and the journey you are on
  • Be open-minded, accept that change is hard, and commit to being consistent
  • Have an accountability partner who you can trust and will push you in the pursuit of your goals
  • Join a group who is striving for similar goals as you to build further reinforcement
  • Leverage resources like YouTube, podcasts, and books for encouragement and support

The exploration of fear with Kristen Ulmer in our last episode was fascinating. As a former pro extreme skier, Kristen learned quite a bit about fear. Now, as a fear and anxiety expert, Kristen introduced us to a deeper level exploration. We hope you’ve taken her free fear assessment available at https://www.kristenulmer.com. Here are our reflections on the interview.

Takeaways:

  • Fear is something to explore and be experienced, not something to run from
  • Fear and excitement are neurologically the same thing
  • We should challenge the notion that fear is “false evidence appearing real”
  • Becoming intimate with fear is giving yourself permission to lean into the feeling
  • Intimacy with fear looks like reflecting, sharing, owning, and tapping into it
  • Being intimate with fear can change the way we turn to medications to “deal” with it
  • We can learn from our fear to expand the way we show up in the world

During a time of uncertainty, the entire world is figuring out what the new normal is, including our caller. The question we were asked is how you stay connected during physical distancing. We don’t know when restrictions will be lifted. One thing we do know is that as we continue to face the unknown and navigate change, we are better together.

Here is a quick summary of tips that we discuss:

  • Use technology especially video to see your loved ones
  • Platform examples: Zoom, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime, Duo, WhatsApp, Marco Polo
  • Join virtual communities (e.g., on Facebook) to stay informed and connected
  • Make new connections. Be opportunistic. Learn from and teach others.
  • Create a group message thread with close family and/or friends
  • Send quick messages that inspire hope or laughter
  • Have check-ins with loved ones. Process feelings, thoughts, and share updates.
  • Plan virtual events (happy hour, game night, dinner, movie date, worship, workouts)
  • Volunteer together. Find ways to contribute (following CDC guidelines).

Our caller Jenna is challenged by the fear of not being enough for the next person she dates following a recent breakup. Breakups! They’re never easy. It’s not uncommon to feel insecure about yourself and a little bit intimidated to get back out there in the dating scene. We’ll talk about some practical things that will help Jenna (and others) work through this fear so she can regain her confidence.

Here are a few highlights from our discussion:

  • Remember that YOU define you. You’re not defined by other people’s expectations of you.
  • Don’t compare yourself to others; a breakup is an opportunity for transformation and rediscovery.
  • Pain is a temporary feeling. It’s OK to go through the healing process.
  • Spend time alone to re-focus on who you are, what you want, and feeling whole on your own
  • Are you doing things that you enjoy, discovering new activities, and meeting new people?
  • Re-evaluate what you’ve learned and what you’re looking for in a relationship
  • Forgive yourself for the mistakes that you made in your previous relationship
  • Give compassion to your ex too. Don’t hold on to the things that went wrong.
  • Create space for healing and love. Use daily positive affirmations to support your process.
  • Create a no negativity zone. Don’t go back to the past or allow others to take you there.
  • Be kinder to others. Acts of service can be a great self-esteem booster.

Have you felt stuck in setting goals? Our caller, Taylor talks about the challenge of feeling stuck in writing her goals. They can sometimes feel too big or not big enough. How do you find the sweet spot to get unstuck and not just set goals, but tackle them with enthusiasm? We’ll talk through some simple tips to get Taylor going and you too!

Here are some key take-away points:

  • Having goals in your head is not enough! Write them down – now they are a call to action.
  • Think it. Write it. Say it. Affirm it. Believe it. Do it.
  • Let go of your past so it does not inhibit you from moving confidently into your future
  • Design your future by dreaming of what you want and then create S.M.A.R.T. goals
  • S.M.A.R.T. stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based
  • Get deeply connected to your WHY – what is the reason behind what you are doing?
  • Manifestation starts with visualization – nothing is too big (lean into the excitement)
  • Just do something. Take one step. Get an accountability partner that won’t let you off the hook.
  • Don’t beat yourself up for not achieving everything. Have grace with yourself.
  • It is ok to feel scared. It is a good thing. It’s a sign of growth. Embrace it.
  • Have both big (visionary) and small (daily and weekly) goals
  • Surround yourself with motivated and committed people who can keep you encouraged
  • Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. YOU CAN DO IT!

The juggling act of life – career, parenthood, self-care, oh my! Our caller Kate shares with us her fear of not feeling successful as a new full-time entrepreneur and a single mom. Then there is self-care, where does that fit in? Can you relate? When your plate is full, it can be overwhelming, but it is possible to achieve fulfillment in each of these areas with high-performance habits.

In this episode, you’ll learn about tips for being your best in the most important areas of your life:

  • First remember – you ARE enough. You can have a successful career and personal life.
  • Ask your kids what being a great parent looks like to them. Listen and discuss their feedback.
  • Be present in every moment. You don’t need more time. You need to make your time count!
  • Purposefully care for your mind, body, and spirit. An empty tank does not serve anyone.
    • Make time to do things that you enjoy (e.g., exercise, church)
    • Also consider activities that are relaxing or fun (e.g., spa, movies)
  • Stay focused on the WHY in your career. This fuels the commitment to your purpose each day.
  • Life is like a pie. Draw your pie pieces and label them. Set goals for each and track progress.
  • Listen to your body. It will tell you what it needs! Give yourself permission to adjust.
  • Leverage the circle of friends around you to get feedback and ideas on challenges you’re facing
  • When you feel off or overwhelmed, asking for feedback is a great way to gut check yourself

We are back to wrap up our discussion around the question “how do I manage a negative and stressful friendship” from one of our callers who as a reminder, wants to share her observations with a long-time friend but is afraid to hurt her feelings. You guessed it, it’s time to get down to action and empower our listener to manage her friendship productively!

In this episode, we’ll discuss our viewpoint on what a challenging friendship looks like – the DRAINER philosophy:

  • Discriminate – exudes judgement and is self-centered causing others to shut down
  • Resentful – shows up as being jealous and holds on to past bad experiences
  • Anxiety – provokes feelings of stress, uneasiness, and concern
  • Inconsiderate – disrespects the time and priorities of others
  • Negative – stays in a place of complaint and a victim mentality
  • Exhausting – depletes energy from others
  • Resistant to change – does not have a willingness to learn or do anything differently

An extreme DRAINER can be a BAITER (backstabber, abuser, imposter, taker, exploiter, and reckless). Be aware of people who have selfish tendencies, are deceitful, consistently manipulate, and are not trustworthy. These are folks to dismiss from your life!

Pay attention to patterns over time and the reciprocity in the relationship. Is value being added in both directions?

What are some recommendations to manage a tough friendship?

  • Limit the time you spend with a DRAINER (create space and distance)
  • Meet in a group setting vs. 1:1 so the attention is not centered on one person (hopefully!)
  • Have a crucial conversation and be vulnerable when you provide honest feedback
  • Consider journaling to track your feelings, their patterns and behaviors, and any changes
  • Provide positive reinforcement for improved behavior
  • Keep SAVERS around you who support, align, add value, elevate, and rise with you
