I was not planning to record a podcast episode, but after watching Keke Palmer’s TED Talk, “How I Set Myself Free,” something moved me.

In this episode, I’m reflecting on what it means to set yourself free, not in theory, but in real life. Free from fear being bigger than faith. Free from worst-case scenario thinking. Free from performing. Free from living by terms other people gave you.

I’m on my own journey of setting myself free, and this episode is an invitation for you to think about what freedom looks like for you.

Because many people are functioning, but not free.

So ask yourself, have you set yourself free?

In this episode, I’m diving into something deeply personal and all too common—the experience of being what I call “The Walking Wounded.” So many of us carry emotional wounds from childhood, past relationships, trauma, or painful experiences we've buried so deeply, we’ve convinced even ourselves they don’t exist. But those wounds don’t just disappear, they show up in our relationships, careers, finances, health, and sense of self.

I’m sharing why healing begins with honesty, first with yourself, and then with the people closest to you. I talk about what it means to love yourself enough to face your pain and do the work to heal it. Because while we can try to pretend we have it all together, the truth always finds its way to the surface.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re smiling on the outside while struggling on the inside, this episode is for you. Let’s talk about how to stop hiding, start healing, and finally live free.

I recently came across a few quotes that stopped me in my tracks because they’re so interconnected. They reminded me that we often stand in our own way without realizing it. Here are the quotes:

“When you protect yourself from the pain, you miss out on the joy.”
“God, use me to be part of the answer to my prayer.”
“You are as free as you allow yourself to be.”
“You can’t read your own label from inside the jar.”

Each of these quotes holds so much truth, and together, they tell a story about vulnerability, faith, self-awareness, and stepping into your full potential.

  1. When you protect yourself from pain, you’re also blocking joy.
  2. When you pray for something, be prepared to be part of the answer.
  3. Freedom is available to you, but you have to give yourself permission to step into it.
  4. You have more greatness in you than you realize, start seeing yourself the way others see you.

This week, I want you to sit with this: What’s one area where you’ve been blocking your own joy or freedom? What’s one thing you’ve been asking for but haven’t positioned yourself to receive? And what’s one thing someone admires about you that you need to start owning?

Because here’s the truth: You already have what you need to unlock joy, freedom, and purpose. You just have to stop standing in your own way.

Thank you for listening to Detox For Your Life. If this resonated with you, share it with someone you love. And if you haven’t already, be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss the next episode.

Until next time, remember: Joy and freedom are already within reach, you just have to give yourself permission to receive them.

Too often, we think if something is simple, then it must be the wrong choice, the wrong option, the wrong direction, the wrong person. We’ve been conditioned to believe that if it’s not complicated, it can’t be valuable. But what if the simplest answer is often the best one?

THE PROBLEM WITH COMPLICATING THINGS

We live in a world that glorifies complexity. We think:

  • If a relationship doesn’t have ups and downs, maybe it’s not real.
  • If a job doesn’t stress us out, maybe it’s not challenging enough.
  • If our goals don’t involve suffering, maybe we’re not working hard enough.

Here’s the truth: simplicity doesn’t mean lack of depth. It means clarity, ease, and intentionality. It means removing the extra noise and focusing on what truly matters.

So how do we shift our mindset to appreciate simplicity? Here are a few actions you can take:

  1. Question Complexity – When something feels overly complicated, ask yourself: Is there a simpler way? Sometimes we add unnecessary steps out of habit or fear.
  2. Trust Ease – Just because something is easy doesn’t mean it’s wrong. If something flows naturally, lean into it rather than assuming it’s too good to be true.
  3. Declutter Your Decisions – If you’re torn between multiple choices, strip them down to the core: What aligns with your values? What feels right in your gut? Often, the simplest choice is the best one.
  4. Say No More Often – Overcommitting creates unnecessary stress. Keep your schedule simple and focused on what truly matters.
  5. Practice Minimalism in Thoughts and Actions – Let go of overanalyzing. Sometimes the best decision is the one that brings you peace, not the one that makes you second-guess.

Simple is not boring. Simple is not wrong. Simple is underrated. The next time you’re faced with a choice, don’t fall into the trap of thinking complexity equals value. Sometimes, the simplest path is the best one.

Thanks for tuning in to Detox for Your Life. If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to subscribe, share, and leave a review.

Until next time - keep it simple.

The Trap of Either/Or Thinking

We live in a world that loves absolutes. Either you’re successful or you’re failing. You’re strong or you’re weak. You’re happy or you’re sad. But life is full of contradictions that don’t fit into these neat little boxes.

The problem with either/or thinking is that it limits us. It makes us believe we have to pick a side, that we can’t hold space for complexity. This kind of thinking can hurt our relationships, keep us stuck in self-doubt, and prevent us from seeing the full picture of a situation.

Shift to a Both/And Mindset

So, how do we start embracing this idea? Here are three things you can do:

  1. Challenge Your Automatic Thinking. When you catch yourself thinking, “It has to be one way or the other,” stop and ask, Is it possible that both can be true? This simple question opens up new ways of seeing a situation.
  2. Practice Holding Space for Conflicting Emotions. The next time you feel happy and sad, excited and scared, or grateful and frustrated, remind yourself that it’s okay. Emotions are layered, and they can coexist.
  3. Extend Grace to Others. Allow the people in your life to be complex. Just because someone does something you don’t like doesn’t mean they are all bad. Just because someone succeeds doesn’t mean they have everything figured out.

Life is not black and white. It’s full of color, complexity, and contradictions. Two things can exist at the same time. And when we learn to accept that, we free ourselves from the mental prisons we’ve created. We allow ourselves to be human. We allow ourselves to grow.

I’d love to hear from you. What’s a contradiction you’ve had to learn to accept in your life? Drop a comment below. Let’s continue this conversation!

If this episode resonated with you, don’t forget to subscribe, share it with someone who needs to hear this, and leave a review. Until next time, keep growing, keep learning, and remember, two things can exist at the same time.

Comfort is the worst addiction. A comfort zone is a psychological state where one feels safe, secure, and in control. Within this zone, there’s minimal stress, no risk of failure, and little demand for change. While it provides a sense of stability, staying in your comfort zone for too long can become a barrier to growth, success, and self-fulfillment.

The Cost of Comfort Addiction

  1. Stunted Growth: Without stepping outside your comfort zone, you miss opportunities to learn and develop new skills.
  2. Regret: Comfort may feel good now, but long-term, it can lead to regret over missed opportunities and unrealized potential.
  3. Plateauing Potential: When you reject challenges, you also reject the chance to see how much you can truly achieve.

Practical Steps to Break Free

  1. Start Small:
  2. Take micro-risks like speaking up in a meeting, attending a new event, or learning a skill you’ve avoided.
  3. Gradual steps reduce fear and build momentum.

Reframe Discomfort:

  • View discomfort as a sign of growth rather than failure.
  • Remind yourself that every successful person once felt unprepared or out of their depth.

Challenge Negative Thoughts:

  • When your mind says, “I can’t,” counter with evidence from past successes or affirmations of your capability.

Set Stretch Goals:

  • Choose a goal slightly outside your comfort zone that excites and scares you. Commit to it and take action.

Embrace Failure:

  • Redefine failure as feedback. Each misstep teaches valuable lessons and builds resilience.

Find a Growth Buddy:

  • Partner with someone who will push you to try new things and hold you accountable for stepping outside your comfort zone.

Celebrate Progress:

  • Acknowledge and reward yourself for every step forward, no matter how small.

The comfort trap feels safe, but it’s a false security. Growth, fulfillment, and success live on the other side of discomfort. Don’t let comfort rob you of your greatness.

Self-rejection has killed more dreams than rejection ever will. Self-rejection occurs when we devalue our own ideas, talents, or worth before anyone else has a chance to. It’s the internalized belief that we’re not good enough, smart enough, or worthy of success. This belief stops us from even trying.

The Cost of Self-Rejection1. Missed Opportunities: * You never know what could have been because you didn’t try. 2. Eroded Confidence: * The more you reject yourself, the harder it becomes to believe in your capabilities. 3. Unfulfilled Potential: * Talents and ideas remain dormant because they were never nurtured. 4. Regret: * A lifetime of wondering, “What if?”

Tips to Overcome Self-Rejection1. Recognize Your Inner Critic: * Identify and challenge the negative thoughts holding you back. * Replace “I can’t” with “I’ll try.” 2. Practice Self-Compassion: * Treat yourself with kindness when things don’t go as planned. * Speak to yourself as you would to a supportive friend. 3. Shift Your Focus: * Concentrate on progress, not perfection. * Celebrate small wins and milestones. 4. Take Action: * Commit to taking one small step outside your comfort zone each day. * Action builds momentum and silences self-doubt. 5. Reframe Rejection: * View rejection as redirection or a learning experience. * Remember, rejection from others is feedback, not failure. 6. Surround Yourself with Support: * Seek mentors, friends, or communities that encourage and uplift you. * Avoid people who reinforce self-doubt. 7. Keep a Success Journal: * Document achievements, compliments, and moments of courage. * Reflect on these during moments of doubt.

Self-rejection silences dreams before they even have a chance. Don’t let it. Give yourself permission to believe in your potential, take risks, and embrace the possibility of greatness.

Have you ever found yourself turning a straightforward task into a lot of unnecessary steps? Overcomplication sneaks into our lives more often than we realize, sapping our time, energy, and peace of mind.

Ways We Make Simple Complicated

  1. Overthinking: Doubting decisions, analyzing every potential outcome, or seeking perfection.
  2. Adding Unnecessary Steps: Turning a direct path into a winding road by over-planning or layering extra processes.
  3. Fear of Saying No: Accepting too many commitments or responsibilities, complicating schedules and priorities.
  4. Procrastination Masquerading as Preparation: Spending excessive time gathering information or resources instead of starting.

How to Stop Making Simple Complicated

  1. Adopt a Minimalist Mindset: Focus on essentials and strip away the unnecessary
  2. Set Clear Boundaries: Learn to say no politely but firmly.
  3. Limit Overthinking with a Time Limit: Give yourself a specific amount of time to make decisions or complete tasks.
  4. Practice 'Done is Better Than Perfect': Accept good enough instead of striving for unattainable perfection.
  5. Simplify Communication: Be direct and clear in your interactions.
  6. Reflect and Streamline: Regularly evaluate tasks or processes to eliminate inefficiencies.

Value simplicity as a way to reduce stress and increase productivity. Start small. Choose one task or decision today, and ask yourself, 'How can I make this simpler?' You might be surprised how much lighter life feels when you stop making simple complicated.

Self-compassion is treating yourself with the same kindness, care, and understanding that you would offer to a close friend.

Self-compassion impacts emotional wellness. Emotional wellness is all about understanding, managing, and navigating our feelings in a healthy way. Self-compassion plays a huge role in this by creating a space where we can process our emotions without adding layers of guilt or shame.

Practical Ways to Practice Self-Compassion:

  1. Start with Self-Talk:
  2. Begin noticing how you talk to yourself, especially when things go wrong. Would you talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself? Replace harsh judgments with encouraging words.

Take Breaks When You’re Struggling:* When you’re feeling overwhelmed, pause and remind yourself that it’s okay to step back. Give yourself permission to rest and recharge without feeling guilty.

Write Yourself a Compassionate Letter:* Whenever you’re feeling particularly down or self-critical, write yourself a letter from the perspective of a close friend. This can help you see your situation from a more compassionate lens.

Practice Mindfulness Meditation:* Mindfulness helps you stay present with your emotions without over-identifying with them. Try incorporating mindfulness practices, like deep breathing or meditation, into your routine.

Emotional boundaries are the invisible lines that separate your feelings, needs, and desires from those of others. They help you define what you’re comfortable with emotionally and allow you to take responsibility for your emotions without absorbing the emotions of others.

The Importance of Setting Emotional Boundaries

  1. Preserving Your Mental Health: Constantly absorbing other people's emotions or overextending yourself emotionally can lead to anxiety, depression, and emotional exhaustion.
  2. Avoiding Resentment: When you don’t set boundaries, you may feel taken advantage of, leading to resentment in relationships.
  3. Improving Communication: Healthy boundaries encourage honest, open communication. By setting expectations, you can prevent misunderstandings and manage conflict more effectively.
  4. Strengthening Relationships: Boundaries foster mutual respect and understanding, which is essential in both personal and professional interactions.

Signs You Need to Set Emotional Boundaries

  • You feel emotionally drained after interacting with certain people.
  • You often say 'yes' when you want to say 'no.'
  • You feel responsible for other people’s happiness or moods.
  • You avoid conflict at all costs, even when it compromises your own needs.
  • You feel guilty for taking time for yourself or expressing your needs.

  • Definition: Vulnerability is the willingness to show up and be seen, despite uncertainty, risk, or emotional exposure. It involves admitting we don’t have all the answers and that we are still works in progress.
  • Common Misconceptions: Many people equate vulnerability with weakness or insecurity, but vulnerability is a strength because it takes courage to let others see our true selves.
  • Connection to Emotional Health: When we suppress emotions or try to appear "perfect," it often leads to stress, anxiety, or emotional exhaustion. Embracing vulnerability allows us to be more authentic and in tune with our emotions, which promotes better emotional health.

Practical Tips for Embracing Vulnerability

  • Start Small: If vulnerability feels intimidating, start by sharing small things with trusted individuals. It could be admitting that you don’t know something or expressing your feelings about a minor event.
  • Be Present: Practice mindfulness and focus on the present moment, which helps you become aware of your emotions without judgment. This awareness fosters the ability to express yourself vulnerably.
  • Challenge Perfectionism: Understand that no one is perfect, and it’s okay to make mistakes. Embrace imperfections as part of the human experience.
  • Create Safe Spaces: Surround yourself with people who accept you as you are. These individuals should allow you to express vulnerability without fear of judgment.
  • Use “I” Statements: When expressing vulnerability, use “I” statements to own your emotions, e.g., “I feel nervous about this project” instead of “This project is making me stressed.”
  • Reframe Vulnerability as Strength: Remind yourself that being vulnerable is a sign of courage and strength. It takes bravery to show your true self and take emotional risks.

Vulnerability is the key to unlocking emotional freedom, deeper connections, and long-lasting emotional health. I encourage you to practice vulnerability in your own lives.

The past is full of lessons, but it’s up to us to decide whether we see them as barriers or stepping stones.

Six Tips for Using the Past as a Teacher of Wisdom:

  1. Reflect, Don’t Dwell
Reflection allows you to learn from the past, but dwelling leads to stagnation. Take time to understand what happened, but focus on what you can learn and apply rather than on what went wrong.
  2. Identify Patterns and Break Negative Cycles
Look for recurring themes or mistakes in your past. Wisdom comes from recognizing patterns and breaking free from negative cycles that no longer serve you.
  3. Reframe Failures as Learning Opportunities
Every setback contains a lesson. Instead of fearing failure, ask yourself, "What did this teach me?" and "How can I grow from this experience?"
  4. Embrace Your Strengths, Not Just Your Weaknesses
Your past isn't just a record of challenges but also victories. Reflect on what you did right and how you can leverage those strengths in future endeavors.
  5. Don’t Let Past Fears Dictate Future Actions
Fear can cloud our judgment, but wisdom clears the way. Recognize how fear from the past may still influence your decisions today, and actively choose courage instead.
  6. Use the Past to Build Resilience
Instead of letting the past break you down, allow it to build you up. Each challenge you overcame made you stronger, and that strength is your wisdom in motion.

Your past holds the key to your future, but only if you choose to see it that way. It’s not meant to trap you in fear, but to guide you with wisdom.

Have you ever felt like you're constantly moving but somehow going nowhere, like you're stuck on a treadmill of busyness without making real progress? Here are some tips to help you stop running in place.

Tip #1: Prioritize Your Tasks Every day, focus on the top 3 things that will bring you closer to your goals. Don’t fill your day with unimportant tasks just to stay busy.

Tip #2: Set Clear Goals Know where you're going before you start moving. Set clear, measurable goals and map out the steps to get there.

Tip #3: Align Your Actions with Your Purpose Ask yourself if what you're doing today aligns with your long-term goals. If not, it may be time to refocus your energy.

Tip #4: Take Regular Breaks to Recharge Recognize when you're in a cycle of "movement for the sake of movement." Take breaks, reflect on your direction, and recalibrate if necessary.

Tip #5: Reflect and Review Regularly Take time each week to review your progress and assess whether your actions are still aligned with your goals. Reflection leads to clarity.

Tip #6: Embrace Deep Work Focus on one task at a time, dedicating uninterrupted time to important tasks. This can lead to more meaningful progress than constantly switching between tasks.

Tip #7: Stay Flexible and Adapt Be willing to change course when necessary. Progress doesn’t always happen in a straight line, so adaptability is crucial.

Tip #8: Track Your Results, Not Your Efforts Keep track of tangible outcomes rather than just how many hours you’ve worked or how busy you’ve been. Focus on results.

Remember, true progress isn't about how fast you move, but how aligned your steps are with your purpose—because running in place will never get you where you need to go. I’m Nicole L. How can friends show support when someone is vulnerable and shares what they are going through? Here are a few tips:

  1. Listen Actively: Sometimes, the best thing you can do is simply listen. Don’t interrupt or try to solve their problems immediately. Just be present and let them express their feelings.
  2. Acknowledge Their Feelings: Validate their emotions by acknowledging what they are feeling. Saying something like, "That sounds really tough," or "I can see why you feel that way," can go a long way in making someone feel heard and understood.
  3. Offer Practical Help: Instead of generic reassurances, offer specific help. Ask if there’s something tangible you can do to assist them. Whether it’s helping with chores, running errands, or just spending time together, concrete offers of help can be more supportive.
  4. Check In Regularly: Make it a point to check in on them regularly. A simple text or call to ask how they’re doing shows that you care and are thinking about them.
  5. Encourage Professional Help: If you notice that a friend is struggling significantly, gently encourage them to seek professional help. Sometimes, talking to a therapist or counselor can provide the support they need.
  6. Be Patient and Understanding: Understand that everyone copes differently and at their own pace. Be patient with your friend and avoid pushing them to feel better quickly.
  7. Share Your Own Vulnerabilities: Sometimes, sharing your own struggles and how you cope can make your friend feel less alone. It shows that it’s okay to have difficulties and that they don’t have to be strong all the time.
  8. Respect Their Boundaries: Respect their need for space if they ask for it. Let them know you are there for them whenever they are ready to talk or need support.

By being more mindful and supportive, we can help our friends feel less isolated and more understood. It's not about solving their problems for them but being there as a reliable source of support. So next time a friend opens up to you, remember to listen, acknowledge, and offer your presence and help. Sometimes, just knowing that someone truly cares can make all the difference.

Tips on Sacrifice in Relationships

Understand Each Other's Love Languages:

  • Knowing and appreciating your partner’s love languages can guide you in making meaningful sacrifices. Whether it’s quality time, acts of service, or words of affirmation, aligning your efforts with their needs strengthens the bond.

Communicate Openly and Honestly:

  • Regularly discuss your needs and what you’re willing to sacrifice for each other. Open communication helps both partners feel valued and understood, preventing misunderstandings and resentment.

Prioritize Quality Time:

  • In today’s busy world, time is a precious commodity. Dedicate uninterrupted time to your partner to show that they are a priority in your life.

Be Willing to Compromise:

  • Relationships require give and take. Be prepared to compromise on certain things and find a middle ground that works for both of you.

Show Appreciation:

  • Acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifices your partner makes. A simple thank you or a gesture of gratitude can go a long way in reinforcing positive behavior.

Support Each Other's Goals:

  • Support your partner in their personal and professional aspirations, even if it means sacrificing some of your own time or resources. This mutual support fosters a deeper connection and respect.

Practice Selflessness:

  • Sometimes, putting your partner’s needs above your own can strengthen the relationship. Acts of selflessness, no matter how small, can have a significant impact.

Balance is Key:

  • While sacrifice is important, it should not come at the cost of your well-being. Ensure that sacrifices are mutual and do not lead to one-sided relationships.

Reflect on Your Actions:

  • Regularly reflect on what you are willing to sacrifice and ensure it aligns with your values and the health of the relationship. Adjust your actions as needed to maintain balance.

Sacrifice in relationships is a testament to love and commitment. By understanding each other's needs, communicating openly, and making thoughtful sacrifices, couples can build stronger, more fulfilling relationships. Remember, it’s not about grand gestures but the small, consistent actions that demonstrate your love and dedication.

I recently heard two quotes that stood out to me. "Fear Never Goes away. You become friends with it." "Everything you're looking for is looking for you." I said to myself, I should do a podcast on these two quotes.

Fear is a natural and constant part of life. Become friends with fear. Accept and understand fear instead of resisting it.

Benefits of Making Friends with Fear:

  • Increased Courage: When you accept fear, it loses its power to paralyze you. You can take action despite feeling afraid, which builds courage.
  • Resilience: Facing fear head-on strengthens your ability to cope with challenges. Each time you confront fear, you become more resilient.
  • Self-Awareness: Understanding your fears helps you gain insight into your inner world. This self-awareness can guide you towards personal growth and better decision-making.

Create Space for Desires: By making friends with fear, you remove the mental and emotional barriers that hold you back. This creates space for your true desires to emerge and flourish.

Clarity and Alignment: Embracing fear clarifies what truly matters to you. With this clarity, you can align your actions and intentions with your deepest desires, making it easier to attract what you seek.

By becoming friends with fear, you not only increase your courage, resilience, and self-awareness but also create the ideal conditions for your true desires to manifest. Understanding and accepting fear allows you to clear the path for your goals and dreams, aligning your actions with the positive energy needed to attract what you seek. Remember, everything you're looking for is indeed looking for you, and embracing fear is a crucial step in this transformative journey.

Sticking with a bad decision is not a triumph of commitment. It’s a failure of courage. The quicker you are to admit you were wrong, the sooner you can start making it right.

There are a number of reasons why people stick by a bad decision.

  • Emotional investment: People often become emotionally invested in their decisions, especially if they've put a lot of time, effort, or resources into them. Admitting they made a mistake can feel like admitting failure, which can be difficult to accept.
  • Fear of change: Even if a decision turns out to be bad, people may fear the uncertainty and discomfort that comes with changing course. They may worry about the consequences of abandoning their original decision and whether they'll be able to navigate a new path successfully.
  • Cognitive dissonance: This is the psychological discomfort that arises when there's a discrepancy between beliefs and actions. People may rationalize their bad decisions to reduce this discomfort, convincing themselves that the decision wasn't actually bad or that things will improve if they stick with it.
  • Sunk cost fallacy: This is the tendency to continue investing in a decision because of the time, money, etc. already invested, regardless of the likelihood of success. People may feel reluctant to walk away from a bad decision because they don't want to "waste" what they've already put into it.
  • Social pressure: People may worry about how others will perceive them if they admit they made a mistake. They may feel pressure to maintain appearances or fear judgment from friends, family, or colleagues.
  • Optimism bias: Many people tend to be overly optimistic about the outcomes of their decisions, even in the face of evidence suggesting otherwise. They may believe that things will eventually work out if they just keep pushing forward.

I want you to remember this, holding onto a bad decision isn’t a sign of commitment; it’s a lack of courage. The sooner you acknowledge your mistake, the sooner you can begin making things right. Do you suffer from success amnesia? Success amnesia happens when someone struggles to recognize past successes and accomplishments.

Success amnesia impacts your life in several ways. Some of those ways are:

  • Lack of Confidence: When individuals suffer from success amnesia, they may lack confidence in their abilities to overcome challenges or succeed in new endeavors because they don't recognize their past achievements as evidence of their capabilities.
  • Increased Anxiety: Without the ability to recall past successes, individuals may feel heightened anxiety or stress when confronted with difficulties, as they don't have the reassurance of knowing they've overcome similar situations in the past.
  • Impaired Problem-Solving Skills: Success amnesia can impair individuals' problem-solving skills because they may not draw upon past experiences or strategies that have worked for them in similar situations.
  • Diminished Resilience: Ultimately, success amnesia undermines resilience because individuals are unable to tap into their reservoir of past successes and experiences to bolster their confidence and determination during challenging times.

Addressing success amnesia involves consciously reflecting on past achievements and successes, recognizing one's strengths and capabilities, and actively drawing upon these experiences as sources of resilience and confidence when faced with new challenges or fears.

In the journey of life, it's common to encounter roadblocks, detours, and dead ends. There are moments when it feels like nothing is working out or fitting into place. It's during these times that the idea of "creating your own lane" becomes not just an option but a necessity. Creating your own lane means forging a path that aligns with your passions, strengths, and values, even when conventional routes seem inaccessible or unsuitable. It's about taking control of your destiny and refusing to be limited by existing structures or norms. Here are some insights and tips to empower you in this journey. Uncover Your Lane:* Creating your own lane isn’t about inventing something entirely new; it’s about discovering what truly resonates with you. Reflect on your passions, strengths, and values. What makes your heart sing? What unique skills or perspectives do you bring to the table? Your true lane lies within these answers.

Pay Attention to What’s Important:* Life drops subtle hints along the way. Pay attention to the qualities and experiences that matter most to you. These clues guide you toward your authentic path. Whether it’s a specific cause, a creative pursuit, or a way of working, honor what resonates with your soul.

Listen to Your Intuition:* Creating your own lane is an inside-out job. While following the mainstream may seem easier, true fulfillment comes from listening to your inner voice. Cultivate your intuition—trust those gut feelings and nudges. They often lead to breakthroughs and innovative solutions.

Embrace Adaptability and Resilience:* When forging a new path, expect twists, turns, and unexpected challenges. Embrace adaptability and resilience. Be willing to pivot, learn, and grow. Remember that setbacks are stepping stones, not roadblocks.

Network and Collaborate:* Building your lane doesn’t mean going it alone. Connect with like-minded individuals, mentors, and collaborators. Seek out communities, attend events, and engage in meaningful conversations. Collaborations can amplify your impact and open doors you never knew existed.

Learn from Others’ Journeys:* Study the stories of trailblazers who’ve carved their own lanes. Read biographies, listen to podcasts, and attend talks. Understand their struggles, triumphs, and strategies. Their experiences can provide valuable insights and inspiration.

Be Fearless and Bold:* Fear often holds us back from creating something new. Embrace courage and boldness. Take calculated risks. Remember that every successful innovator faced uncertainty. Trust that you have what it takes to pioneer your own path.

Iterate and Refine:* Your lane isn’t static; it evolves. Be open to feedback, iterate, and refine. Adjust your course as needed. Celebrate progress, no matter how small. Celebrating your progress fuels motivation and reinforces your belief in the path you've chosen. Each step forward brings you closer to your unique destination.

Remember, creating your own lane isn’t about rejecting existing paths. It's about seizing the opportunity to craft a path that is uniquely yours. Embrace the challenges, stay true to your vision, and let your passion be your guide. As you venture into uncharted territory, remember that the journey itself is as valuable as the destination. So, dare to dream, dare to innovate, and dare to create your own lane. I'm Nicole L. Turner, your Mindset Coach, helping you shift the way you think so you can change the way you live. Stop saying, “If people say, ‘after all I’ve done for you’ that they only did for you as a transaction.”

Recognize Genuine Acts of Kindness: Discern between genuine acts of kindness and manipulative behaviors disguised as favors or transactions. True acts of kindness come from a place of genuine care and concern, rather than being used as leverage.

Communication is Key: Advocate for open and honest communication in relationships. Express your needs and expectations clearly, while also being receptive to the needs of others. Effective communication can help prevent misunderstandings and foster healthier relationships.

Value Reciprocity: Reciprocity in relationships is important. Surround yourselves with individuals who reciprocate kindness and support in a genuine manner.

Gratitude and Appreciation: Express gratitude and appreciation for the kindness and support you receive from others. Genuine expressions of gratitude can strengthen relationships and foster a sense of mutual respect and appreciation.

Self-Reflection: Reflect on your own intentions when saying, “After all I did for you.” Are you genuinely expressing hurt or frustration, or are you subtly demanding something in return?

As human beings we often look at things from our perspective and don’t as often look at things from the other person’s perspective. Someone gets the job that we applied to – we’re mad about it. Someone gets the house we wanted, we’re upset about it. Someone buys the last item that was left, we’re frustrated. Someone finds the love of their life and you’re still single, and you wonder why them and not you. You see where I’m going.

It's important to cultivate a positive and supportive mindset when it comes to other people's successes and blessings. Jealousy or resentment can be counterproductive and detrimental to our own well-being. Each person's journey is unique, and what may be a blessing for someone else doesn't diminish our own potential for success and happiness.

Instead of harboring negative feelings, it can be more beneficial to focus on our own goals, celebrate our achievements, and work towards creating our own blessings. In doing so, we contribute to a healthier and more positive environment for ourselves and those around us. Remembering that life is not a zero-sum game and that there is an abundance of opportunities for everyone can help shift our perspective and foster a more supportive mindset.

Don’t hate on other people’s blessings. There’s an abundance of blessings for each and every one of us. Rather than dwelling on what others have received, let's focus on our unique journey, recognizing that success, happiness, and fulfillment are not finite resources. By celebrating the victories of those around us, we contribute to a culture of support, unity, and shared joy. So, let's continue to uplift one another, cultivate gratitude for our own blessings, and remember that there's room for everyone to thrive in this extraordinary journey called life. Thank you for tuning in to the Detox for Your Life podcast, may your path be filled with endless blessings and opportunities. I’m Nicole L. I read in a guide to self-discipline that One of the reasons we don't have self-discipline is because we run from the hard, uncomfortable things. We would rather do the easy, comfortable, familiar things. I am a mindset coach, helping people shift the way they think so they can change the way they live. Discipline starts with our mind – how we think. Self-discipline is about learning to control yourself so you can work towards your goals, even when no one is forcing you to.

Discipline is a crucial aspect of achieving goals and leading a successful life, but many individuals struggle with maintaining self-discipline for various reasons. Here are some common challenges and tips to improve self-discipline:

Challenges in Practicing Discipline:

  1. Instant Gratification Bias:
  2. Challenge: Humans are wired to seek immediate rewards, making it difficult to resist short-term pleasures.
  3. Tip: Practice delaying gratification by setting long-term goals and breaking them down into smaller, manageable tasks.
  4. Lack of Clear Goals:
  5. Challenge: Without clear objectives, individuals may lack motivation and a sense of purpose.
  6. Tip: Define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals to provide clear direction.
  7. Poor Time Management:
  8. Challenge: Inefficient use of time can lead to procrastination and hinder discipline.
  9. Tip: Prioritize tasks, create a schedule, and break down large tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks.
  10. Fear of Failure:
  11. Challenge: The fear of failure can paralyze individuals, preventing them from taking necessary actions.
  12. Tip: Embrace failure as a learning opportunity and focus on the lessons gained rather than viewing it negatively.
  13. Lack of Consistency:
  14. Challenge: Inconsistency in behavior and routines can disrupt the development of discipline.
  15. Tip: Establish daily habits and routines to create a stable environment that supports disciplined behavior.
  16. External Distractions:
  17. Challenge: Modern life is filled with distractions, making it challenging to stay focused.
  18. Tip: Minimize distractions by creating a dedicated workspace, turning off notifications, and practicing mindfulness.

Remember, developing discipline is an ongoing journey that requires self-awareness, commitment, and a willingness to adapt. By addressing the challenges and implementing these tips, individuals can gradually strengthen their self-discipline and enhance their ability to achieve their goals. I’m Nicole L. 1. Making it happen: This part of the dance involves taking initiative, setting goals, making plans, and actively working towards achieving what you desire. It's about being proactive, making decisions, and putting in effort to shape your life in a deliberate way.
  2. Letting it happen: On the other hand, there are aspects of life that are beyond your control. This part of the dance is about being open to opportunities, embracing uncertainty, and allowing life to unfold organically. It's a recognition that not everything can be planned or controlled, and sometimes, the most meaningful experiences come from unexpected or unplanned events.

Finding the right balance between actively shaping your life and allowing things to unfold naturally requires a thoughtful approach. Here are some tips to help you navigate the dance between making it happen and letting it happen:

  1. Set Clear Goals: Identify your priorities and set clear, realistic goals. Having a roadmap for what you want to achieve provides direction for your actions during the "making it happen" phase.
  2. Take Action: Once you've set your goals, take consistent and intentional action towards them. Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps. This proactive approach helps you make progress and stay focused.
  3. Be Flexible: Understand that not everything will go according to plan. Life is full of uncertainties, and unexpected events may occur. Embrace flexibility and adaptability, adjusting your plans when necessary.
  4. Practice Mindfulness: Cultivate mindfulness to be present in the moment. Mindfulness allows you to appreciate and engage with your current circumstances, fostering a sense of acceptance for the aspects of life that are beyond your control.
  5. Trust the Process: Trust that, even when things don't go as planned, there is a larger process at play. Sometimes, the most meaningful experiences and opportunities arise from unexpected situations.
  6. Learn from Challenges: View challenges as opportunities for growth. Instead of seeing obstacles as setbacks, consider them as chances to learn, adapt, and develop resilience. This mindset helps you navigate difficulties with a positive outlook.
  7. Listen to Your Intuition: Pay attention to your intuition and gut feelings. Sometimes, the best decisions arise from a combination of thoughtful planning and listening to your inner wisdom.
  8. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate the small victories along the way. Recognizing your achievements, no matter how modest, can boost your motivation and enhance your overall sense of accomplishment.
  9. Build a Support System: Surround yourself with supportive individuals who can offer guidance, encouragement, and perspective. Having a strong support system can be invaluable during both challenging and successful times.
  10. Practice Self-Care: Take care of your physical and mental well-being. Balancing the dance of life requires energy and resilience. Ensure you are giving yourself the care and rest needed to sustain your efforts.

People often say, Rest in Peace, but we also deserve to LIVE in peace. Death should not be your gateway to peace. We only get one life. We owe it to ourselves to be happy, to have joy, to experience peace while we are living. Ask yourself the question, “Is there anything in my life disrupting my peace? If the answer is yes, ask yourself, “Why am I still dealing with this? If someone you loved was experiencing something that was disturbing their peace (job, relationship, friendship, etc.), would you want them to stay in that situation? Love yourself enough to say, I want better for me. I want peace for me.

We’ve all seen how someone’s life flourished once they left that job that mistreated them or left that mate that mistreated them. Some say, God was holding back the blessings until they got out of that situation. We spend way too much time on the worst-case what-if scenarios. How about you shift that to think about the best case what-if scenarios. You owe it to yourself to have joy and peace now. Death should not be your gateway to peace.

A few tips to help you stop typecasting yourself:

  • Get back in touch with yourself. Get in touch with who you are and who you want to be. Is there a disconnect between who you are and who you desire to be? Highlight the parts of you that you really like/ really enjoy. Identify the areas you aren’t too fond of. Identify your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Don’t be afraid to take risks. EXPAND yourself. I know growth is scary. In that risk-taking, you will develop or grow parts of you that you labeled as weaknesses or aren’t too fond of. On your “to do list” for the remaining months of this year, make two goals (I don’t want to overwhelm you so two is good for now), make two goals where you take a risk – do something different, try something different.
  • Build/expand your network. As much as we love the people in our lives, sometimes it’s good to get to know other people, different types of people. It exposes you to different experiences, different ways of thinking, different ways of being. These are people who may be different from your normal circle – whether that’s a friendship circle, career circle, business circle, etc. Diversify your network. Cultivate relationships with people from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
  • Keep learning. Keep learning about yourself. The beauty of life is that (hopefully) we grow and evolve and so do the things we like, we do, the type of people we want in our life, our boundaries, etc. Keep learning YOU. Keep learning about life. Keep learning in general.
  • Include a variety of experiences. This goes back to those two goals I mentioned earlier. Try something new.
  • Be patient. Along the way of self-discovery and “untypecasting” yourself, be patient with yourself. Change can be messy, uncomfortable, frustrating, etc., be patient with yourself.

Avoiding typecasting is a crucial part of life. Stop typecasting yourself. Stop applying for the same type of jobs. Stop limiting your experiences. Stop dating the same type of people. Stop having all the same type of friends. Stop always thinking the same way. Stop always doing the same habits over & over.

One of the things that robs us of joy is our desire to seek perfection/be perfect. We give gifts to other people, but how often do we give gifts to ourselves? One of the best gifts you can give yourself is the gift of joy. As I always say, you are the only person you are guaranteed to spend the rest of your life with. Do more of what brings you joy.

The definition of joy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. If you don’t already know, I want you to think about what gives you joy, what gives you a feeling of great pleasure. Then I want you to think about what’s preventing you from experiencing that. If you find that it’s your quest for perfection that’s preventing you from experiencing joy, choose joy over perfection.

Whether you're considering a career shift, a new personal direction, etc., here are some tips to help you navigate the process:

  • Self-Reflection: Before making any major changes, take time to reflect on your strengths, interests, values, and long-term goals. Understand what truly matters to you and what you want to achieve in your new direction.
  • Set Clear Goals: Define specific and achievable goals for your new path. Having clear objectives will give you direction and motivation as you work towards your desired outcome.
  • Research and Education: If your new course requires new skills or knowledge, invest time in researching and learning about the field. This could involve taking courses, attending workshops, or self-study.
  • Networking: Build a network of contacts in your desired field. Connect with professionals, attend relevant events, and engage in online communities to gain insights and potential opportunities.
  • Plan and Strategize: Create a detailed plan for your transition. Break down your goals into smaller, manageable steps. Having a structured approach can make the process less overwhelming.
  • Manage Risks: Understand that change involves uncertainty. Assess the risks associated with your new direction and develop contingency plans to address potential challenges.
  • Seek Guidance: Don't hesitate to seek advice from mentors, career counselors, or individuals who have successfully made similar changes. Their insights can provide valuable perspective and guidance.
  • Embrace Flexibility: Be open to adjustments along the way. Your initial plan might need modifications as you gather new information and experiences.
  • Practice Patience: Changing course takes time. Progress may not be linear, and setbacks are normal. Stay patient and persistent in pursuing your goals.
  • Stay Positive: Maintain a positive mindset. I’m talking about that toxic positivity. I recognize that it’s not humanly possible to be positive 100% of the time. What I am saying is this, focus on your strengths and the opportunities that lie ahead because it will help you overcome challenges and stay motivated.
  • Embrace Failure as Learning: Not everything will go as planned. Instead of seeing failure as a roadblock, view it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Adapt and refine your approach based on the lessons you gain.
  • Take Care of Yourself: Change can be stressful, so prioritize self-care. Maintain a healthy lifestyle, engage in activities you enjoy, and seek emotional support from friends and family.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. This can boost your confidence and motivation as you progress.
  • Stay Organized: Keep track of your tasks, deadlines, and progress. This helps you stay on top of your goals and prevents overwhelm.
  • Visualize Success: Imagine yourself thriving in your new course of life. Visualizing success can reinforce your commitment and help you maintain focus.

Yes, change is a gradual process, and it may require taking calculated risks, but you can change course at any given time. If you are looking for a mindset coach, you can reach me at https://www.detoxforyourlife.com/

On your journey to giving yourself as many chances as you need to get it right:

  • Start by letting go of the past. We spend way too much time staying stuck in the past and it paralyzes us. Prevents us from moving forward. The past failures or the things that didn’t go our way or work out for us in the past still affords us an opportunity to grow.
  • Figure out what you do want. Piggybacking on the last one, sometimes you spend way too much time in the past that you fail to take that as an opportunity to figure out what you do want. Decide what’s meaningful to you. What feeds your soul. What brings you joy. What you’re passionate about. What makes you feel like you are walking in your purpose. If you don’t take the time to figure out what you want, you will be like the hamster on the hamster wheel – just going in circles.
  • Forget about what other people are going to thin Keep doing what feels right to you. Don’t worry about what other people may think. They do what’s best for them and you must do what’s best for you.
  • Focus on doing and not just thinking about doing. You don’t want to suffer from paralysis by analysis, meaning you end up not doing anything because you spent all of your time thinking about doing.
  • Employ positive thinking. Negating thinking creates negative results. The mind must believe it can do something before it is capable of actually doing it.
  • Create a daily routine. Routines are more effective at producing better results. Routines also reduce overthinking and offer a sense of control.

Don’t quit just because you didn’t get it right the first time or the second time, give yourself as many chances as you need to get it right. I’m Nicole L. Possible reasons why people have difficulty seeing the change in someone else:

Familiarity bias: People often have preconceived notions or mental images of others based on past experiences and interactions. These preconceptions can create a cognitive bias that makes it difficult to perceive changes in someone's behavior or character.

Limited perspective: If someone has limited interactions or limited exposure to the person in question, they may not have enough information to notice significant changes. For example, if someone only sees a friend occasionally or hears about them through second-hand information, they may not be able to detect subtle or gradual changes.

Confirmation bias: People tend to seek out information that confirms their existing beliefs or expectations. If someone has a fixed perception of another person, they may unconsciously ignore or downplay evidence that contradicts their beliefs, making it difficult for them to see the changes that have occurred.

Emotional attachment: Strong emotional connections can cloud judgment and make it harder to recognize changes. When someone has a close relationship with another person, they may be more inclined to perceive them based on past memories or emotional associations rather than objectively evaluating their current behavior.

Lack of attention or awareness: People may not pay close attention to others or be aware of the subtle cues that indicate change. In a busy or distracted state, individuals may overlook behavioral shifts or fail to notice the differences that have occurred over time

I read that the average person makes about 35,000 decisions a day. In life, in your career, in your relationships (friendships and romantic relationships), etc., if you don’t get clear on what you want, you will find yourself in a constant cycle of getting things that kinda, sorta, almost, but not quite meets it.

So how do you start getting clear on what you want? Take out a piece of paper and write the answer to these questions:

  • What makes me happy? Make a list of the things that make you happy.
  • What are my values and am I being true to them?
  • What are my needs (e.g., financial, emotional, physical, etc,)?
  • What would I do if there were no limits?
  • What do I want my life to look like 3, 5, 10 years from now?
  • What does a good life look like for me?
  • What are my greatest accomplishments thus far?
  • What are the things I do want in my life?
  • What are the things I don’t want in my life?
  • Who do I admire or get jealous of?
  • What gives me purpose? What give my lie meaning?
  • For my intimate relationship, what does my ideal relationship look like?
  • For my finances, what amount of money do I need to enhance the quality of my life?
  • For my health, what does it mean for me to be healthy? How do I want to look and feel?
  • What are the things/activities I do that put me in a flow state?

If you find yourself taking on other people’s frustrations, first ask yourself, “Why am I frustrated by this”? Is this person known to overreact? In the past, when their frustrations became my frustrations, was their validity to the frustration (meaning was there a valid reason for you to be frustrated)?

It’s important to set emotional boundaries: stop taking on other people’s feelings. This can be a challenge for those of us who are an empath. In addition to setting emotional boundaries, ask yourself if what you are feeling, is that frustration, yours or someone else’s. “If it’s not your emotion, then you can let it go, simply by stating to yourself: This isn’t mine. I don’t have to take this on.” The moment you catch yourself feeling emotions that aren’t yours, raise your awareness of what’s happening within you – do you tense up?

Protect yourself from other people’s stuff. Remove yourself from the situation, whether it be temporary or long-term. Temporary looks like taking a little bit of time away from the person to get back to your center. Long-term may look like making the decision not to spend time with people who consistently drain your energy or want you to feel what they feel. Depending on your relationship with the person, this process may not be so easy, so be patient with the process. Don’t let other people’s frustration become your frustration.

In Cortney S. Warren’s book, Lies We Tell Ourselves: The Psychology of Self-Deception, she says, ““Self-deception comes from not having enough psychological strength to admit the truth and deal with the consequences that will follow when the truth is acknowledged.” She also says, “The more we lie to ourselves about how we are contributing to our problems, the more harm we will cause to ourselves and our relationships because we will blame others for undesirable aspects of our lives instead of taking responsibility for our role.”

When you lie to yourself:

  • It can cause problems in your relationships
  • It could lead to you making poor decisions
  • It may prevent you from reaching your full potential
  • You won’t know yourself as well as you should

Understanding the point where self-deception starts is important because this will help you learn how to stop lying to yourself.  Truth be told (no pun intended) You can never truly be honest with others if you aren’t first honest with yourself.

There’s a quote that says, “Our lives improve only when we take chances and the first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves.”

The quotes that inspired today's podcast:

When you show them you’ll stay through anything, that’s when they’ll put you through everything.

Intentionally leaving out details is lying too.

Even if our background and circumstances influence who we are, we are still responsible for who we become.

You can’t disappoint someone multiple times and expect their energy to still crave you.

The wrong person will distract you and the right person will motivate you.

When you avoid difficult conversations, you trade short-term discomfort for long-term dysfunction.

They want you to forgive and forget while they are still doing it.

Stop being on bad terms with people you love. Death is so random and permanent.

Just because things would have been different that doesn’t mean they would have been better.

Are you betting on yourself or against yourself?

Every day we make decisions, and each decision, whether big or small, is forcing us to bet either on ourselves or against ourselves.

Betting on yourself makes you see opportunities everywhere Betting on Yourself = Choosing Yourself

Betting on Yourself = Believing in Yourself

Betting on Yourself = Choosing What's Valuable to You

Betting on Yourself = Creating the Life You Want

Never be afraid of betting on yourself; it's the best risk you will ever take. Give yourself a chance to win big.

I

n the last year, I’ve been really focusing on self-care and self-love, and when I think about self-care and self-love, grace comes to mind.  We ask God for grace, we ask others to give us grace, but how often do we really give ourselves grace? Don’t you think it’s crazy that we are more apt to give grace to others than we are to ourselves.

When you are having a very human experience, give yourself grace. I once read something that said, One of the best ways to bring more wellness into your life is by easing up on yourself. Giving yourself grace is the ultimate gift. Be kind to yourself.

I was watching something on TV and the guy said, “You can’t be both the arsonist and the firefighter.” I said to myself, oh that’s deep.  I began to ask myself, how do we try to take on that dual role in our lives.

How many times have your actions, even if you had good intentions, set some things in motion that you regretted, you wished you hadn’t, in hindsight, there may have been a better way or different way to go about doing things. You have created a “mess” and now you are trying to find a way to right a wrong.

I recently saw a quote that said, “Be thankful for your triggers for they show you where you are not free.”  Have you noticed how certain topics evoke in you a variety of emotions? On any given day, you probably experience a range of emotions —excitement, unease, frustration, joy, disappointment & these range of emotions are usually tied to a specific event.  An emotional trigger can be anything - memories, experiences, or events that sparks an intense emotional reaction, regardless of your current mood. Your response to these events can vary based on your frame of mind and the circumstances surrounding the situation. Emotional triggers are associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Knowing what your emotional triggers are (and how to deal with them) is a key component of good emotional health.

A lot of people are vague about what they want – want out of life, their career, in their relationship with others, or for the future. Being vague means lacking clarity. The first step to getting what you want out of life is to decide exactly what you want.

Where do you want to be in the future?

What do you want to experience?

Who do you want to be?

What do you want to accomplish?

What makes you happy?

If you are vague about what you want, you will find yourself with a lot of things you don’t want.

Sometimes clarity comes to us when we stop thinking. There’s a quote by Albert Einstein that I love. It says, I think 99 times and find nothing. I stop thinking, swim in silence, and the truth comes to me. –– Albert Einstein

Ways to know they are an asset:

  • You Are All Around Better Off Now Than You Were Before You Met.
  • Have you learned a lot as a result of the relationship?
  • You are better off financially
  • You’re healthier
  • Your energy is more positive
  • They respect your boundaries

How do you know if a relationship is a liability?

  • They are energy vampires – when you are in their presence, they suck the positive/good energy out of the environment
  • There’s always drama with them – always drama in their life or they are always causing drama.
  • Everything is always about them. They consume the conversations with their life. When you’re hanging out, it’s all about what they want, where they want to go, what they want to eat, what attention they are getting
  • They are slick with the tongue – they put you down or insult you or throw shade but pass it off as just joking.
  • They compete with you – yes, this also happens in romantic relationships
  • They secretly copy you
  • They on the low, hate on you – they are your frenemy
  • They don’t respect your boundaries – often crossing them & get offended by the fact you have boundaries
  • They are super needy. They get offended if you are busy, don’t answer their call when they call or respond to their message ASAP – as if you don’t have a life, you are there for their every beckoning need or call.
  • You feel responsible for them. You stay in their life to be support them/have their back because their behavior is one that acts like they can’t function without your assistance.
  • You’re giving more than you get

  • You can’t depend on them
  • You feel used
  • You question why you are even friends with them or in a relationship with them.
  • And last, you just don’t enjoy spending time with them.

Ten signs you have an unhealthy relationship with money:

  1. You have a scarcity mindset – you constantly worry that there is never enough.
  2. Spending money pains you or makes you feel guilty.
  3. You spend money carelessly. You partake in frivolous spending.
  4. You have a lot of debt…credit card debt.
  5. You have money wounds – meaning that your issues with money started with your past – either in your childhood, early adulthood, or a traumatic event you experienced.
  6. Your aspirations – Your early experiences with money can also affect what you believe you’re capable of. Since you were denied your dreams as a child, you feel like your dreams are not something you can fulfill
  7. You have fears as it relates to money - fears of not having enough.
  8. You feel like you have to spend money to enjoy yourself.
  9. You constantly overspend and make excuses for your bad money habits.
  10. You refuse to talk about money or when you do, you talk negatively about it.

Tips to improve your relationship with money.

  1. Don’t let money control you.
  2. Debt is not normal, so stop saying things like debt is the American way
  3. Pay attention to your money. Know where your money is going.
  4. Don’t blame it for your bad mood. Money is never the reason you’re in a bad mood.
  5. Don’t make spending money your therapy.
  6. Recognize the difference between want and need. We often use the word “need” for a want.
  7. Recognize what type of money person you are:
    1. Spenders Do you frequently make purchases that are beyond your means? Do you purchase things to make yourself happy? Is there a connection between shopping and your mood? If so, then you can consider yourself a spender. Spenders have a tendency to accumulate credit card debt because shopping to them is an addiction. Spenders spend money in hopes that material items will bring happiness or provide pain relief.
    2. Misers On the other end of the spectrum are the misers. Misers absolutely fear poverty and constantly worry about not having enough money to live. Misers need to feel in control and are generally uncomfortable with any sort of uncertainty. Ironically, misers fear poverty yet they practically live in it because they spend so little.
    3. Haters Money haters absolutely detest money and what it does to people. They eschew wealth and will often live in deprived and desolate conditions. They will purposely avoid material possessions whenever possible.
    4. Seekers Money seekers are the ones who obsess over becoming wealthy These people put a premium on making a fortune with the belief that it will solve all of their problems. In reality, there are usually other inadequacies in their lives that they are trying to make up for with material wealth.
  8. Identify your money story – We all have a money story. You just might not know how it started. Much of how we interact, manage and talk about money stems from lessons we learned (intentional and unintentional) as a child.
  9. Set your money goals. Take the time to identify your goals — and get very specific.
  10. Ignore the Joneses – "Don't compare yourself to others.
  11. Forgive yourself. you need to forgive yourself for past & current money mistakes.

The only thing worse than loving someone who doesn't love you is loving someone who loves you, but doesn't know how to show you love.

You stay and wait because you see potential, you see what’s inside, you see what could be once you shatter all the walls so they can let you in. But they won’t let you in because they don’t have room for you, they won’t let you in because that means they have to share the deepest parts of themselves and that’s not something they know how to do. When you love someone who doesn’t know how to love, you eventually forget what love is or how it feels, you begin to love poorly, selfishly, you become stingy with your heart. When you fall for someone who doesn’t know how to love, you forget that someone out there knows how, you forget that you could find someone who reinforces everything you believe about love instead of challenging it and you forget that someone out there wants to love you — not break you.

Signs of a healthy relationship.

  • You admire your partner for who he or she is as a person
  • Your partner is trustworthy
  • Your partner makes time for you on a regular basis
  • Your partner accepts responsibility for their actions
  • Your partner is your biggest cheerleader
  • You and your partner are on the same page in terms of your basic values and life goals
  • Your partner is affectionate
  • Your partner talks about your future together so you can create a shared vision of your relationship
  • You each keep your own identify within the relationship
  • You spend quality time together doing things that are mutually fulfilling as well as quality time apart doing what is important to you individually
  • You encourage each other to grow and change. In other words, you inspire each other to be a better person.
  • You and your partner feel safe communicating personal needs and wants
  • You respect each other's differences even if you disagree on important issues
  • You share realistic expectations for the relationship, not what you wish or fantasize it should be
  • Each of you contributes your fair share to the relationship, whatever that happens to be. Each partner brings their best strengths and abilities for the benefit of the “team."

How do you stop your mind from being like Velcro and shift to being more like Teflon?

  1. It starts with you first understanding your thinking style. Are you a Black and white thinking means seeing everything in extremes? Do you do mental filtering - only see the negative parts of situations. Do you overgeneralize – meaning do you believe that the results of one situation predict the results of all future situations? Do you jump to conclusions - believe that you know what others are thinking? Do you do emotional reasoning - believe that if you feel something it must be true. You might believe that because you feel anxious, there is something in a situation to be feared. Do you turn small problems into big ones or blow things out of proportion.
  2. Write down why the negative thought is present. Writing versus thinking helps purge the thought out, and when you cansee the words on paper or a screen it is easier to make sense of it and move forward.
  3. Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness creates a distance between yourself and your thoughts, allowing you to view yourself as separate from them.
  4. Know your triggers. Certain people, situations, and circumstances may set into motion a seemingly endless stream of negative thoughts (or perhaps more than usual) so it’s important to be aware of them.
  5. Use affirmations. When you wake up, open your eyes and feel gratitude for the new day. Write down daily affirmation.
  6. Surround yourself with positive people.
  7. Change the tone of your thoughts from negative to positive. Instead of thinking, “this isn’t going to work out” change your tone to, “even if there are bumps in the road, this is going to work out in my favor.”
  8. Practice gratitude daily.

  • Practice. Awareness and understanding are your starting place. Now it’s time to put things into practice.
  • Be patient with yourself and others. It's going to take time to adopt new behaviors and patterns.

10 things to tell yourself instead of I can’t:

  1. I am doing my best every day. Even if when you first start telling yourself this, you aren’t really doing your best every day, the more you say this to yourself, the more your best will show up.
  2. The best is yet to come. Too often people spend way too much time on what didn’t work out & they believe that is an indication of what’s to come. Well, the best is what’s to come.
  3. The greatest mistake I will make is by living in fear that I will make one. Honestly, true failure is not trying.
  4. I will celebrate my failures. Failure is part of the process. Failure is a great teacher. As difficult as it may be, try to be grateful for the failure. According to Oprah, failure is another step to greatness.
  5. There were times before when I said I can’t, but I did. Reflect on past successes. It’s human nature to focus on the negatives but take a moment to pause and think about other times you thought you couldn’t, but you did.
  6. I am not going to let things discourage me. Richard Evans said it best when he said, “Don’t let life discourage you; everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was.”
  7. I believe in myself. Be your own cheerleader. Have your own “you got this” moment with yourself.
  8. I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul. You have the power to choose. You determine what your future will be. You are in the driver’s seat of your life.
  9. I love myself. When you love yourself, you want the best for yourself and you go out there and get it.
  10. I am grateful for every day. I ALWAYS emphasize the importance of gratitude. Being grateful leads to more happiness and being more optimistic.

Try saying these to yourself on a consistent basis. Turn your cant’s into cans – it’s time for you to be a cans collector.

You’ve heard the expression, your energy introduces you before you even speak. What energy do you give off? How do people feel when they are around you? When people walk away from meeting with you or talking with you, do they feel like they had an “experience” – a good one?

I want to share with you eight ways to make sure you are giving people an awesome experience when they encounter you:

  1. Connect with your inner positive vibes – meaning identifying your best qualities and project them to the world. The more positive energy you give off, the more positive energy you will receive.
  2. Display positive body language. 55% of communication is body language. Negative body language, such as crossing your arms, putting your hands in your pockets or slouching, can make you seem closed off or withdrawn. Make sure you are standing with your shoulders back, your arms are not crossed, and make you are making eye contact.
  3. Be aware of your color choices. Don’t underestimate the power of colors.  The colors you wear make people feel a certain way. Certain colors say that you are friendly and engaging.
  4. You’ve seen the meme that says, if someone doesn’t have a smile, give them yours. This is so true. SMILING is kinda like yawning, it’s contagious.
  5. Do your words smile when you speak? Now, this is different from the previous one. You’ve heard the expression, it’s not what you say, but how you say it. When you say hello, does it sound like it took every ounce of energy to speak or does your hello say H E L L O it’s a beautiful day and I’m glad to see you?
  6. Give compliments. Yes, you want to make sure your compliments are genuine. I’m really good at this. If I like someone’s dress or tie or hairstyle or think they did an excellent job on something or see they really tried (even if they failed), and the list goes on, I make sure I compliment them.
  7. Stay in the moment. If you are like me, you can tell when someone is distracted, whether it be in person or on the phone. Not giving someone your FULL attention sends out a negative vibe, and honestly, it’s borderline disrespectful. It makes people less likely to want to engage with you.
  8. Practice daily gratitude. When you focus on the positives in your life, your energy and your vibe will be positive.

If you practice these on a regular, your energy will have the Wegmans’ effect.

Some tell-tale signs of a bad organizational culture that can be spotted during the job interview

  • Body Language: Is the interviewer constantly shifting in his/her chair? Is the interviewer paying more attention to his/her phone than the interviewee? Is the interviewer avoiding eye contact? Is the interviewer rifling through papers when the interviewee is talking?
  • They put a lot of pressure on you to take the position. They are trying too hard to close the deal. The more the interviewee questions about the potential job (once an offer has been made), the more irritated they become, and they force the selectee to make a quick decision.
  • The interviewer is late. The interviewer doesn’t respect the interviewee's time to show up on time, and then when he/she sits down to conduct the interview, it appears he/she hasn’t even looked at the interviewee's resume.
  • Word Choice: When they ask the interviewee a question, do they begin the sentence with a negative message? Are the scenarios they ask the interviewee to answer all negative scenarios?
  • The company has a history of high turnover. Make sure you do research in advance. There are several sites where you can find out information on a company, sites such as Indeed and Glassdoor. You can also go to various sites to see if the company has been sued by employees and why, sites such as Justia, Lexis Academic, EDGAR (SEC filings).
  • Extreme Friendliness: Sometimes the potential supervisor who appears to be extremely nice will end up being one of the worse bosses ever.
  • Self-Absorption: Does the interviewer appear to be more concerned with telling you about him/her than hearing about you, your experiences, and your skills? Does he/she question the answer you provided for a particular question, as if to indicate your answer was wrong?
  • Trust Your Gut: If something doesn't feel right to you about the job, more times than not, your gut is right.

LOVE IS AN ACTION

I once read a quote that says, "We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.” Do you make it a point to show your mate loving feelings through loving actions? Sadly, all too often the ones to whom many people give the fewest appreciative words and kindly actions are their loved ones.

20 ways to show love as an action

  1. Share your fears and vulnerabilities with your mate
  2. Pay attention to your mate
  3. Be emotionally and physically faithful to your mate
  4. Accept and celebrate your mate's uniqueness and differences
  5. Love without strings attached
  6. COMMUNICATE!!!!!!!!
  7. Work on your goals and dreams together
  8. Forgive
  9. Apologize when you are in the wrong or have offended your mate
  10. If you have kids, don't forget to schedule alone time and date nights
  11. Encourage your mate to be the best person they can be
  12. Laugh and enjoy your mate
  13. Be open and honest with your mate
  14. Give more than you take in the relationship
  15. Before your point the finger at your mate, examine your actions first
  16. Do sweet, little gestures to show appreciation - don't wait till a special occasion
  17. Show affection
  18. Give your mate space when he/she needs it
  19. Say, "Thank You"
  20. Compromise, be flexible

Eight Tips to Help You Be More Consistent

  1. Start with a morning routine. It has been said that the way you start your morning sets the tone for your entire day. When I read articles that ask people the keys to their success, many of them say they have a morning ritual. The morning ritual may be meditation, reading the Bible, working out, eating a healthy breakfast, or doing all of those things.
  2. Set an alarm or a calendar reminder on your phone. Until something becomes habit for you, it’s not a bad idea to set a reminder on your phone. These daily reminders will either annoy you or motivate you. Hopefully, they will motivate you.
  3. Be present. Quiet your mind. Be fully engaged.  Being present means you must minimize distractions.  You may have to go on “do not disturb”, do a digital detox (no social media or surfing the internet). If you have a family, you may have to get up earlier than everyone else so you will have time to yourself.
  4. Forgive yourself. There will be moments when you fail to follow through on your plans. Don’t beat yourself up. Don’t let the failure cause you to give up. Setbacks and missteps are part of the process.  Forgive yourself and keep moving.
  5. Go slow. People tend to set gigantic goals and instantly jump right in instead of taking baby steps. We live in a time where people have a microwave mentality. They want things to happen quickly and when they don’t, they get discouraged and give up.  Things aren’t going to be perfect, and you shouldn’t expect them to be.
  6. Get an accountability partner. We all need someone who is going to hold us accountable and help us stay on track. When we are the only ones holding us accountable, we don’t always do a good job pushing ourselves. Find one or two people you trust, tell them your goals and your timeline and ask them to hold you accountable.
  7. Plan ahead. You’ve heard the expression, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Planning helps to eliminate obstacles that may derail you.  What’s your desired outcome? Why is this outcome important to you? What goals do you need to meet along the way to ensure you reach your objective? What’s your process to accomplish those goals?
  8. Do it anyway. You may feel uninspired but do it anyway. Push your way through. The more you “do it anyway”, the more inspired you will eventually become.

Seven steps to develop greater emotional awareness and help you effectively manage your feelings.

  • Don’t react right away. Reacting immediately to emotional triggers can be a big mistake. You’ll more likely say or do something you’ll later regret. Before refuting the trigger with your emotional argument, take a deep breath and stabilize the overwhelming impulse.
  • Be Conscious of Your Thoughts. Thoughts are habitual and it can be quite difficult at first to consciously be aware of every thought that passes through your head. Before you change them for the better you must be aware of exactly what you are thinking.
  • Discover the ‘why’ of your emotions. Once you are aware of your thoughts, ask yourself what is causing this feeling inside you?
  • Change the way you think about a situation. Once you know the root of the problem, you can change the way you think about it. Your thoughts and beliefs shape your feelings. So, consider your thoughts. Are they based on truth? Are they logical? Are your beliefs true?
  • Choose how you want to react. This is the hardest part. The way that we react and manage our emotions is habit. Do you control your emotions, or do they really control and direct you? Once you are able to control your emotions, you will feel more in control of your life.
  • Modify your expectations. Take a look at your expectations. If they are not realistic, you are bound to be disappointed or stressed.
  • Avoid negative thinking. When you are in emotional turmoil, it’s easy to get caught in a negative thought pattern. You tend to replay the situation and experience the feelings again. Break out of negative thinking.

Seeking perfection stifles your progress:

  • It leads to self-criticism.When you fall short of a goal, the battle in your mind begins and you beat yourself up over it instead of looking at the goals you did reach, you are focused on the goals you didn’t or instead of focusing on the things you did right, you are focused on the things you fell short on.
  • It prevents you from being open to new ideas. Have you ever noticed those people on your job who say, we do it this way because we’ve always done it this way? They had “perfected” that one way, and that leads to fear of trying something new – being open to new ideas. You have a difficult time adapting to change.
  • It keeps you stagnate. It prevents you from moving forward. Seeking perfection is just like analysis by paralysis. You become so obsessed with doing things perfect until you are literally not moving forward.
  • It makes you concerned with what others think of you. People who constantly seek perfection often worry about what others think of them. They are seeking recognition and approval from others. Steve Jobs once said, “Your time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” I believe the significance of this quote is that it is important to be true to yourself. As long as you are trying to live a life to get the approval of others, you are never really progressing.

Now that I’ve shared ways how seeking perfection is stifling your progress, I want to give you tips to overcome that.

  1. Practice self-compassion. People tend to have more compassion for others than they do themselves. We all make mistakes. Mistakes are part of the journey. Don’t beat yourself up over it.
  2. Stop thinking it has to be all or nothing. The opposite of perfect is not failure. I often say, even if you are taking baby steps, forward motion is forward motion. Never disregard small forward movement. Celebrate the small wins.
  3. Change your mindset. The first step to feeling like you’re enough is changing your mindset and negative beliefs you have about yourself. Creating a mindset that isn’t filled with unrealistic expectations will help you cultivate a sense of well-being.
  4. Learn to let go. Try to let go of whatever it is that’s holding you back from accepting who you are. People who seek perfection are often trying to silence those voices from people who told them they weren’t good enough either through their words or their actions. You are not defined by what others say about you. Yes, those things were painful, but don’t let your pain, your past, or your emotions lead you to negative ideas about yourself and push you to never make any mistakes.
  5. Tell yourself something wonderful about you every day. The more you start to see that you are progressing in life, even with your missteps and mistakes, you will start to see that it is about making progress, not about trying to be perfect. NO ONE IS PERFECT!

Multipotentialite: A multipotentialite is someone with many interests and creative pursuits. Multipotentialites have no one true calling the way specialists do.

Multi-passionate/multipotentialite/multi-faceted are all interchangeable terms.

It’s okay to be a multi-passionate person in a niche’ happy world. Many people say, focus on ONE thing and be the expert in that one thing. Yes, that’s great advice for some, but not for all – not for those of us who are multi-passionate.  Up until recently, I was very frustrated, and actually felt like a failure because everyone kept encouraging me to follow ONE course until successful, and my brain just could not focus on one thing because my interests and talents weren’t in just one thing. So to my fellow multipassionate/multi-faceted/multipotentialites out there I want to say to you, “You don’t have to choose just one because you were never meant to.” I want to offer some tips for the multipotentialites like me:

  1. Stop trying to pick that one thing. You have many passions – you just need to find a conveyance to deliver your multi passions.
  2. If you’re like me, when you start with one idea, you may eventually get bored with it and move on to something else. How do you help yourself with this problem? First, you must accept that there’s a bigger calling. The things you are multi passionate about server a bigger purpose. How do you know? Well, you start by identifying:
  3. Your purpose
  4. Your values
  5. Your SELF
  6. Your Core Message

  7. Your cause List your passions. List all the things you are interested in and then think about what problem (or multiple problems) do they solve?

  8. You need a confluence or convergence – it’s that things that bring all of your passions under one umbrella. For example, my confluence happened when I created the trademark, Detox Strategist. Not the problem was when most people hear the word Detox, they think of weight loss or drugs and alcohol detox. Detox or detoxify means to rid of poison or the effect of poison. Poison is something that is harmful to our happiness or well-being or causing harm or ruin or hurtful.
  9. Multipassionate people tend to over thing – suffer from paralysis by analysis. So, I encourage you to stop think and start doing. Clarity comes from engagement, not thought.
  10. Your journey is just that – YOUR journey. Don’t compare your path to others. Enjoy YOUR journey and trust in the destination.
  11. Don’t be hard on yourself, and make self-care a priority. We multipotentialites tend to be hard on ourselves and because of our varied interests, we sometimes over do it, and fail to incorporate rest and self-care into process.

A plot twist can happen at any time in your life.

When you get a new cell phone, tablet, or computer, do you stick with the default settings or do you change the settings to your personal preferences? Most people change the settings. When you live a life by default, you are basically accepting what’s already been selected for you. We all know people who seem to experience the same set of challenges or obstacles over and over again, or who have the same or similar negative life events happen to them, regardless of where they are or what they are doing. You are a co-creator of your experiences and when you have internal stress, frantic pressure, and a doom or gloom mentality, your life reflects that back to you.

Here are some ways to tell if you are living life by default: (1) Do you constantly have a feeling that something is missing? (2) Are major aspects of your life decided by happenstance – things like your what you do on a daily basis, your career, your friends, your dating life, etc.? (3) Do you wake up each day and feel like you are simply reacting to what life is throwing at you? (4) You have no idea of what will truly make you happy. If you answered yes, you may be living a life by default.

Here are five tips to help you live a life by design instead of living a life by default:

  • Get clear about what you really want out of life. That means defining what makes YOU happy.
  • Now that you are clear about what you really want out of life, create a life plan. That means setting goals and achieving them. They don’t have to be big audacious goals. People think that their goals have to be something big to make a difference, and when they don’t reach the big goal, they feel unhappy, stressed, depressed or out of alignment. Small goals are just as important. It’s that practice of achieving the small goals that lead to even bigger goals. Achieving small goals build confidence to aim higher.
  • You need purpose. Your purpose is your why. It’s that “thing” that makes your life fulfilling. It’s something that resonates deeply within your heart.
  • Learn to be in the moment. According to a Harvard University study, almost half of our waking hours are spent NOT living in the moment. Half! Living in the moment is also associated with mindfulness. Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present, aware of where you are and what you’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around you.
  • Live a life of gratitude. I will ALWAYS emphasize the importance of being grateful. Gratitude makes us happier. Research shows that gratitude increases mental strength, strengthens our emotions, increases our self-esteem, reduces aggression, improves psychological health, and improves physical health.
