We are Klarc and BobbieJean! “Wake Before the Day” was actually a phrase that came to us a couple of years ago…and has now become a way of life. With four tiny humans we’re raising, most of our quiet, listening and creating happens in the early morning.
Our church encourages each person to read a chapter of the Bible a day, write a verse the Holy Spirit lifts, pray that verse and share it with others. Let's talk about the Bible, Holy Spirit adventures and what's happening in our world. We'll post early in the morning and “Wake Before the Day”, the “day” can’t distract us because we beat the sun out of bed!
Be careful not to believe the lie that "following the rules" will save you. A godly life starts with what Christ has done not what you will do.

Usually when it's too good to be true it usually is but in the case of Romans 5, it's not! God tells us that the experiences in life that have brought heartache and hardship can be used for our good. Another liberating truth we need to hold on to is that it when we were in the midst of our sin Jesus chose to die for us. Let's unpack this amazing news!

It seems God wants to make it really clear to us that salvation is found in repenting and believing, accepting the free gift of faith. There is no "Faith + _________". Just believe. When we remember who God is (faithful, true, wise, holy, good) it should minimize our fear when following God's leading!

Romans 1 discusses many things: nature proving God exists but being unable to save, humanity's need for a sinless savior, sexual immorality and the lie that world is "advanced" and offers wisdom. The reality is there's nothing new nor is there "progress" in these immoral world views. We all need Jesus and he calls us to obedience, there is where real freedom is found!

It's important to identify sin that is quick to ensnare and entertain. The remedy is to fix your eyes, thoughts and attention on Jesus.
We receive the gift of faith from God and then are called to exercise our "faith muscle" even when our life and ministry appear "fruitless"!

So Jesus is greater than ... Moses, angels, the high priest ... the list goes on and on. What's the big deal? Jesus' kingdom and way of life is different and greater than anything humanity had ever known. God's law isn't on a stone tablet anymore it's on the believer's heart. It's not something we take off and put on, he's forever with us.

In Psalm 4, it seems there is chaos breaking out all around the Psalmist. Often when life gets hard we're quick to say, "God help! Change my circumstances!" But in this Psalm, we are encouraged to ask God to change our heart first in the midst of our circumstances. The Psalmist joins Jesus and Paul focusing on prayer directed toward heart change. Humanity forfeited the keys to rule over the earth in Genesis 3. Although already defeated, Satan still seeks God's power and wants to harm God's people. This is a reminder to renew your mind with God's word and stand firm in the victory of Jesus on the cross.

Acts 27 is a jam packed chapter dealing with Paul as he sails stormy seas headed to Rome. Here is a takeaway from this chapter. The first is don't minimize the journey you're on. Often we're focused on the destination but God is with you on the journey. He speaks. We're to be obedient and listen even when it doesn't make sense!

In Acts 24 Paul is on his way to Rome and continues to have high-stakes conversations regarding Jesus and salvation. In this chapter Paul has a conversation with a leader named Felix. Felix makes a subtle but relevant statement, "I'll listen to you when it's convenient for me". How often do I follow God only because it's convenient?

Devotion: strong love and loyalty; the use of time, money and energy for a specific purpose.
The word "devotion" isn't used much in this chapter but this is what we see. Paul continues to lay in all on the line, speaking truth to "opponents", spending time in jail, traveling to far off cities, why? Because he's a devoted follower of Jesus. How devoted are we as followers of Jesus? What would it look like for us to be more devoted?

The Spirit empowers the believer to share Jesus even to death. What kind of witness are you willing to be?
Believers are called to endure because God is holding back his judgment. He wants more people to believe! Who can we share Jesus with today?
As we experience the grace of God we will simultaneously become more aware of the brokenness of the world. God calls his people to endure, to trust in his timing and to hold back from an attempt at self-salvation.
Are you eager for the judgment or afraid of it? The chapter ends offering hope and a promise for the believer's future!
Anytime a human encounters God or an angelic being the first words out are "don't be afraid". God is all-powerful and everywhere. How often do we think about him?
The Bible is powerful and authoritative. Allow God's word to guide you through a world that promotes sin!
Although the imagery of Revelation is complex and was written to the church years ago this is a word for the church today. Let's discuss the freedom Jesus offers and the hope he gives his people for the future.

Genesis 11 is a foundational chapter in the Bible because this is when humanity structurally and organizationally sets itself up against God. From Babel comes the wicked empires of Egypt, Assyria, Babylon etc. Yet even in the midst of humanity's evil Genesis 11 ends with God's grace and faithfulness coming to a pagan named Abram.

A man once said one could become an atheist just by reading the Bible. The reasoning behind his statement is that there are many things in the Bible that are difficult to understand. If one avoids asking the hard questions and tragedy strikes or a "smarter" person comes along it's quite possible one's faith might implode. On the flip side of the coin, if one attempts to address these issues but does so without understanding the context in which the Biblical passage was written, there will be even more confusion as one attempts to make sense of the scripture looking through a 21st century lens. So here we are, we're going to address the tough questions head on and go on the journey together!
At some point in time we have asked, "Who is in control?" The Bible speaks to the fact that God is good, he has a good plan and that he loves us. However, some of our life experiences can lead us to question these Biblical truths. Enter into 2 Samuel with us and feel the tension as King David is on the run again, this time being hunted by his own son.
In this episode we sit in the midst of a very sad and heavy story. The consequences of David's sin become very evident and his sons take on his worst traits. Where do we go when our shame becomes too much to bear? The answer is to the cross. We're reminded that in the midst of David's failures as king one of his descendants would one day come and be the perfect king we all need - Jesus Christ.
Sometimes we buy into the lie that we need to do things "for" God when the reality is God has done everything for us and invites us to do things "with" him! In Luke 13 Jesus begins his teaching giving us a reality check - we are all going to die. The question is do we want to have a fruitful life and are we willing to walk the straight and "narrow" and follow his teaching?

Jesus essentially tells them (and us) not to get too focused on the ability to preach, heal and kick out demons but rather focus on the fact that God is over all.

We're called to do the same. We end by discussing God's timing. There have been instances in our life where our prayers were seemingly not answered or things didn't go the way they hoped. Trust in God's timing. Trust in God's goodness. He knows what he's doing even when it doesn't seem like it.
Chapter 6 is Luke's version of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus addresses many of the Old Testament laws but takes it a step further and gets to our heart. He ends the chapter with a powerful question, "Why do you say to me Lord Lord but not do what I say?" A powerful and convicting question we need to answer as well. Let's dive in!
There's a saying that goes, "identity determines destiny". We see Luke making that point here with the genealogy of Jesus and as John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus. It's important to note the Holy Spirit and his role in this stage of God's saving work.
The Gospel of Luke differs from the other gospels in that it gives us an in depth view of the relationships between key people. In Luke 1 we see two people who were entrenched in the "old way of doing things" open up to God's work. We can be encouraged by Mary and Elizabeth's relationship. "What happened to that fellow Moses?" said the Israelite people. You see, Moses had been up Mt. Sinai with God for 40 days and the people were impatient so they made a golden calf to worship. There is a good chance that very wicked sexual acts occurred which lead to discipline, death and harsh consequences. Exodus 32 reminds us of the holiness of God and that his presence is what we need more than anything else in this world.

Egypt attacked God's firstborn in Israel and it came with a price. Even though we get glimpses of Israel's freedom we know that even with the law and the land, the people cannot save themselves. That is why God sent Jesus, the firstborn, to pay the price for all humanity. Join us as we unpack the importance and meaning of "firstborn".
Up until this point in Exodus, Pharaoh's magicians have kept pace with the signs and wonders of God. But no more. From Exodus 8 on, God separates and distinguishes himself from the powers of the world. God could have done all of this himself yet he invites his people to participate in his work.

Exodus begins with a bang! Pharaoh was threatened by the growing number of Hebrews and set out to kill all the baby boys. In the middle of this atrocity two unrecognized heroes, the Hebrew midwives Shiphrah and Puah feared God more than Pharaoh and did what was right. When it comes to joining God in his work we often hesitate by asking questions like, "How is this going to happen?" or "Am I qualified for this?" or "What if I don't have the right answers?" In the "Feeding of the 5,000", Jesus invited the disciples to join him and like us they doubted and asked a lot of questions! The reality is that Jesus had already given them, and us, everything needed! Let's unpack John 6 together.

I often hear from non-Christians and skeptics say, "The Bible makes God sound like some kind of power hungry dictator! Why does the Bible say we have to live to "please him"? That doesn't sound fun!" The problem with this statement is that they're viewing our relationship with God as a tyrant to a slave but as Christians we're to view our relationship through the lens and motivation of love. We seek to please those we love not because we fear them but because we care for them!

When we profess Jesus as our Lord and savior our sin was nailed to the cross. When the Spirit gave us a new heart we too resurrected with Christ. I think we can all agree its great news that Jesus offers eternal salvation and protection for those who believe. In Revelation 5 we discuss this "New Song" that's being sung. This chapter lifts the gift and joy that comes with our praise and worship of God. A few questions we ought to wrestle with in reading this chapter are: - Why is it necessary to praise God? - How often does praise and worship flow from us?

Proverbs 12 is all about our WORDS - our words matter. This chapter breaks down what the speech of the righteous sounds like compared to the speech of the wicked. Let's dive into this much needed chapter and examine the ways we talk to one another.
Hard work and diligence leads to profit, gain and growth. Laziness on the other hand leads to poverty and hunger. The truth of this statement can be applied to every arena of life but we want to press into our spiritual journey. Are we diligent or lazy? In Psalm 4, it seems there is chaos breaking out all around the Psalmist. Often when life gets hard we're quick to say, "God help! Change my circumstances!" But in this Psalm, we are encouraged to ask God to change our heart first in the midst of our circumstances. The Psalmist joins Jesus and Paul focusing on prayer directed toward heart change. This Psalm begins and ends pointing out God's righteousness - let's call it a righteousness sandwich! The heart of the Psalm tells us to spend time reflecting and meditating on God's past faithfulness, a common theme in this book!
When we ask for help God we believe God gives us what we need. It might not always be what we wished or hoped for but we trust that God only gives us what is best. Psalm 138 concludes by essentially saying, "God fulfill your purposes in my life!" Let's pray the same for us today!

All of these are describing the promise and security we have in Christ and his promises because of his victory on the cross. So what holds us back from believing in God's promises? Hebrews 1 makes one thing very clear, Jesus is God and is to be treated as such. The author uses the Old Testament to describe Christ and his Kingdom. In the description we're told the Lord loves righteousness and hates wickedness. How does our love/hate list compare to God's? What adjectives would you use to describe Jesus? Let's dive in!
Acts 27 is a jam packed chapter dealing with Paul as he sails stormy seas headed to Rome. Here is a takeaway from this chapter. The first is don't minimize the journey you're on. Often we're focused on the destination but God is with you on the journey. He speaks. We're to be obedient and listen even when it doesn't make sense!
In Acts 24 Paul is on his way to Rome and continues to have high-stakes conversations regarding Jesus and salvation. In this chapter Paul has a conversation with a leader named Felix. Felix makes a subtle but relevant statement, "I'll listen to you when it's convenient for me". How often do I follow God only because it's convenient?
In Acts 22 Paul shares the Gospel by sharing his story. We've all heard "the power of story" and for the christian our story becomes especially powerful when we acknowledge our inability and God's ability.
Devotion: strong love and loyalty; the use of time, money and energy for a specific purpose.
The word "devotion" isn't used much in this chapter but this is what we see. Paul continues to lay in all on the line, speaking truth to "opponents", spending time in jail, traveling to far off cities, why? Because he's a devoted follower of Jesus. How devoted are we as followers of Jesus? What would it look like for us to be more devoted?
Acts 17 encourages and challenges us in many ways. Who can be part of the church? Anyone and everyone who confesses Jesus as Lord! Examine the scriptures yourselves - please don't be spoon fed whatever is floating around online. What does it mean to be God fearing? Let's break it down!
Episode #26 discusses our journey to listen and learn from our African American brothers and sisters in the wake of tragedy. While we pray for racial reconciliation in our country we are stepping into intentional repentance, a reminder of God's justice and righteousness and call for God's people to desire the same.
The Christians in this chapter encourage us to follow their example: fast, pray and listen for the Lord to speak. As we let this Biblical truth wash over us we're reminded that God has forgiven us not only from sin but from every sin. Let's live in this freedom!

When we hear "repent" we should be accepting this as a great gift! The reality is God has given us a way to get rid of the junk we are carrying ... that we weren't created to carry! Later in the chapter Jesus talks about the Kingdom of God with small and mundane examples (seeds & yeast) and the beauty of these mundane examples is that we live 99.9% of our life in the mundane and God meets us there.

What you look at is given the keys to what "runs" you, your heart! What have you been reading, watching, looking at and how has that shaped your thinking and believing?

While words like "power" and "authority" are exciting to talk about it is also humbling when you realize what following Jesus costs the believer, which is everything. In the midst of this Jesus feeds 5,000+ people with the little they have to offer. But isn't that beautiful? God takes the little we have to offer and when we entrust it to him he does more than we could have ever imagined!
