Created/Hosted by Rita Phetmixay (she/they/boo), A.S.W., M.A., Politicized Healing Practitioner, Coach, and Independent Audio Producer. Healing Out Lao'd explores the intersections of Lao diaspora storytelling x healing x tools for sustainability. While this show centers the Lao and broader Southeast Asian diaspora experience, anyone can benefit from this resource, especially those in the margins including BIPOC (Black Indigenous Persons of Color), survivors, thrivers, healers, movement builders, and so forth. In order to highlight the nuances of the diverse Lao diaspora experience, HOL casts diverse perspectives of what it means to be a child of refugees while also inspiring a new generation of folx to heal and move forward with their lives. This is one project to expand visions of the overall #LaoHealingMovement.
In this episode of Healing Out Lao'd, host Rita shares personal updates, reflections on community engagement, and the importance of play in healing. Rita discusses her experiences with pickleball, hosting events, and wants to see YOU at either the upcomingLao Friendsgiving Community Impact Dinner on November 10th at 5pm at Mekong Cuisine Lao and Thai (open to everyone + allies/partners), and/or at the March 2026 HOL retreat (open to Lao-identified women and femmes) in San Diego.

On the 50th anniversary of the end of the Secret War in Laos, the Fall of Saigon, and the rise of the Khmer Rouge regime, this powerful conversation—hosted by the Los Angeles Public Library—brings together Lao American community leader and healing practitioner Rita Phetmixay and writer, director, and producer Kulap Vilaysack.
Together, they reflect on the ripple effects of war, loss, migration, and survival that have shaped their Lao American experiences—and how, in the midst of those legacies, AAPI joy continues to thrive.
The episode explores:
📌 Why this matters:
Too often, Lao and overall Southeast Asian refugee stories are erased or assimilated into broader Asian American narratives. This conversation centers those histories as living testaments to survival, creativity, and joy.
🔗 Highlights:
🎉 AAPI Joy is not a luxury—it’s a birthright.
📚 Hosted by Los Angeles Public Library as part of their AAPI Heritage Month series

In Episode 2 of Healing Out Lao’d, Rita unpacks Thailand’s role in the ongoing conflict with Cambodia through the lens of nationalism, colonial legacy, and cultural appropriation. With Lao and Thai Isaan roots, Rita reflects on how this war hits close to home — especially after her cousin had to evacuate due to a bomb hitting her city in Thailand. This episode further explores the history of the Preah Vihear Temple dispute, how borders drawn by colonial powers continue to drive tension, and how Thai nationalism and militarization are erasing Khmer and Lao cultural heritage in the name of sovereignty and control. This episode centers the emotional toll on Southeast Asian communities navigating both proximity to power and generational trauma from displacement.
On July 28th, 2025, a ceasefire was brokered by ASEAN and Malaysia, though reports show that fighting still occurred after the deadline. With over 38 civilians killed and more than 300,000 displaced in under a week, this update episode offers space to grieve and reflect on how everyday people bear the cost of state violence. We discuss the fragile/skeptical nature of the peace deal, and how cultural sites like Preah Vihear continue to be weaponized. As always, this podcast holds space for truth-telling, rooted care, and collective reflection in the face of ongoing harm.

MEET HOL GUEST: KULAP VILAYSACK
In part one of episode 21 of HOL, Kulap joins Rita for a conversation about how she created Laos Angeles, a community-based organization made up of the diaspora from Laos in Los Angeles and Orange County areas. Not only has Kulap found a passion for organizing such space, but shares about many other national Lao/tian diaspora orgs. This provides a truthful lens to one of the many layers of Lao/tian diaspora movement building work.
In addition, Kulap shares about her tumultuous upbringing in Minnesota and how she found out her father wasn’t her real father at the age of 14 that led her to create the Origin Story documentary film. This part one of a two-part episode also dives into the various healing modalities Kulap has sought in Los Angeles to heal her inner child and break free from her own internal dialogue that reinforced her to believe she was never enough.

"Come In
I walk into my mothers kitchen, the aroma of heritage and history kicks me in the face,
Seated on a stool fit for a child, she’s hunched over a metal bowl
Her hands strong, calluses born on her palms from kneading a first generation,
There’s a certain focus as her fingers flicker through the flour
Dust sprinkled across her floral sinh
She throws a brief glance, eyes worn from being my mother and father,
And uses her lips to point at the knife she’s used for the last decade to cut noodles for Khao piek sen
These are the original pouty duck lips, just ask her and my aunties
The same lips that learned to speak just enough Lao-Lish to assimilate into a culture she was fostered into
The result of a war she never enlisted in yet still fought on the frontlines to give her seeds a chance to breathe
Shrapnel and warpaint scarred on her sleeves
puffed veins of blue blood protruding along her skin flow like the Mekong from the fold of her arm to her wrist
As clear as the line on my father’s heart monitor before he fell asleep,
She’s never seen him in her dreams she says,
And neither have I but I know he’s saved my life once or twice before,
I remember being called into her room with my younger sister and the talk of dad consumed us into tears,
We were three, holding each other until the salt crystallized on our faces,
Sometimes I wonder how many of my mother’s tears I’ve swallowed,
How they cascaded from her brown eyes into that mixing bowl,
Weaving its way into the recipes I’ve come to crave,
Khao piek sen on a sick day,
Khao niew gup guew on a lazy day,
Khao chao gup sa ew on a broke day,
But “Khao mah,”
“Khao mah” is what I really wanna say,
come here, come in, come hold,
I’m here, with you, for you,
Let’s embrace
Khao mah, Mae,
Hard times aren’t here to stay,
She knows but she’s still tired of being resilient and I can sense it in her tone,
She’s a real OG,
Immigrant in her bones,
I’d wash away her stains if I could but she’d just tell me it rains for a reason - to cleanse today for tomorrow"

MEET HOL GUEST: AMARACHI ANAKARAONYE
In episode 14 of HOL, Rita brings on close friend Amarachi Anakaraonye for another episode on the #HealingTheHealer series, which focuses on “how the healer, heals” by showing how Rita builds deep healing and connected relationships with friends/allies of the Lao community!
Rita has known Amarachi for about 10 years, stemming from their earlier college days at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Throughout their parallel lives, they have challenged each other to grow, heal, and now they have individually found their own love for audio storytelling via podcasting!
In 2017, Amarachi founded The Fragmented Whole, a bimonthly podcast series that examines how the brokenness within such formalized systems as politics, education, and health, are reflected simultaneously within our relationship with ourself. The Fragmented Whole uplifts the narratives of individuals and collectives pushing against such systemic disparities to promote wholeness through research, service, innovation, and/or education.

MEET HOL GUEST: WANDA PATHOMRIT
In episode 4 of HOL, Rita brings on close friend Wanda Pathomrit to show “how the healer, heals” by building deep healing relationships with friends/allies of the Lao community. It’s important to note that growth happens throughout a lifetime and Rita’s aptitude to thrive and heal would not have been possible without the critical mentors/femtors, professors, and friends in her life that took her under their wing to remind her to believe in herself as much as they believed in her. Wanda is special in a way that she holds a space to nurture authentic growth for all individuals that cross her life--especially for Rita!
Wanda identifies as a daughter of Thai immigrants, mental health psychotherapist, and activist. Her formal degrees are a Masters of Social Welfare and a Master of Arts in Asian American Studies and she is currently employed at the Asian American Pacific Counseling Treatment Center in San Fernando Valley.

MEET HOL GUEST: Saengthong Douangdara
In episode 1 of HOL, Saengthong or "Saeng" joins host Rita Phetmixay for a conversation about using food as a catalyst for bringing communities together. They both dive deep into so many great topics about healing + counseling + food + personas + fitness & LOLs.
Saeng is a Los Angeles based as a cooking instructor and provides cooking lectures that teach participants the science and the historical context of foods. He comes from a diverse background growing up as a Lao American in the Midwest where he pursued a bachelors degree at the University of Wisconsin - Madison following his master’s at the University of Hawaii at Hilo has given him a wide appreciation of foods around the world. With his education in understanding the significance of foods in underrepresented communities and promoting a holistic balanced mental and physical health, he has combined his passion in cooking and teaching in his interactive lectures about food. He has published food photography artwork in magazines, lectured at universities, provided cooking lessons across large food retailers, and cooked for Hollywood events. His philosophy around cooking is to make it approachable, educational, and fun! He hopes to use food as a catalyst to teach people about the history and cultures of underrepresented communities.
