On Sunday, we had the joy of worshipping God together as a whole church family... in my mind, there is nothing quite like it! As it was Father's Day, we heard about the story of the Prodigal Son (or The Loving Father as some call it). Jesus told this story to show just how much God loves his children (that's us by the way).Just like the younger son, there's so much in life that we're not satisfied about. The way we look, the way we live, our education our inner self. Something is lacking and we don't know what it is, but we know we're unsatisfied and we look elsewhere to meet our needs to be satisfied. How often do we take the things the God has given us and waste them, forgetting the giver completely.Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons

Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word. We are in the middle of a series called ‘Good News for all’ and we are exploring how the gospel of Jesus Christ is good news for everyone. In Luke 10, Jesus sends out his disciples to preach the good news of the Kingdom. He asks them to pray; asking the Lord for more workers in the harvest field and he sends them out with nothing, teaching them to totally depend on the Lord for provision. Their mission is successful and they return rejoicing that even demons submit to them in Jesus’ name. I love Jesus’ response. “...Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). These verses are so practical and relevant to us today. As we go on mission with Jesus let’s pray for more workers, let’s go in weakness and utter dependence on God and let’s rejoice, not in our performance, but let’s rejoice that our names are written in heaven’s book. Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.Jesus is so full of love for us, that He chose to go to the cross, to suffering an agonising, sin-bearing death, to bring forgiveness and hope to the world. Luke tells us that he set out “resolutely” for Jerusalem (9:51), refusing to be distracted from the greatest act of self-giving love in history. He gives his everything for us, and as those who have received his forgiveness and new life as a free gift of grace, he then calls us to give our everything for Him.Jesus spells out the cost of discipleship in Luke 9:57-62 in no uncertain terms. He calls us to put him FIRST in our lives over every area: our Finances, our Interests, our Relationships, our Schedule, and our Troubles. How we use our money, where we devote our passions, how we conduct our relationships, the way we use our time, and how we trust him with the challenges that we face are all important. Jesus is not just an add on to the things that we often consider most important, like work, family, holidays, and recreation, but He calls us to put Him and his good purposes at the heart of every part of our lives.Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons

Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.Wow! What a great Easter Sunday we had here at Christ Church! It was truly amazing to see so many people come to our Easter services and to see Liam and Christian get baptized. I love baptism services. They are a great opportunity to hear people’s stories of how they came to know Jesus and; the services themselves are full of powerful symbolism. Baptism is a story of death and resurrection. The person being baptized is united to Christ in his death (shown as they go down under the water) and united to Christ in his resurrection (shown as they come up out of the water). There are also a number of other symbols for example, like the one of water cleansing us from our sin. But essentially the person being baptized is saying “I have put my old life to death and have started living a new life - the new life that Jesus has won for all of us.”Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons

Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word. The book of Jonah is a wonderful story, summarised by that phrase, “salvation comes from the Lord.” The sailors are saved, Jonah is saved, and most wonderful of all, the wicked city of Nineveh is saved. Jonah knows that God is “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, who relents from sending calamity”, and yet we find him at the end of the book as a disgruntled, unhappy prophet who wishes he could die!It is clear that Jonah’s heart is out of tune with God’s heart. God has a heart of love for the world, not just for his own people, and He wants no one to perish, but all to come to repentance and to have eternal life. Like the father in the story of the prodigal son, God loves to forgive and welcome back the wayward, the rebellious, the undeserving, and throw them a great party. However, the older, self-righteous son looks down on his brother, and angrily refuses to go into the party. Like Jonah, his heart is out of tune with God’s heart.Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons
Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.As we have walked through Jonah over the last few weeks I have been struck again by the grace of God. The sailors (chapter 1), Jonah and Nineveh are all recipients of God’s amazing grace. At the start of chapter 3 we read, “Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time…”Here we encounter a God who loves to give us a second chance. In chapter 1, Jonah receives the word of the Lord but runs away in disobedience. But in chapter 3, God gives him a second chance. Often in our lives we don’t get a second chance. We make a monumental error at work, a relationship breaks down, or we make a costly error on the sports field. We often wish we could turn back the clock and start all over. Sometimes we are granted a second chance, and sadly, sometimes we are not. But the great news of the gospel is that, with God, he always gives us a second chance. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” No matter who you are or what you have done – you are never beyond God’s grace and compassion. Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.“Salvation comes from the Lord!” This was Jonah’s cry having been saved from drowning and delivered from the belly of a large fish. He knew that the Sovereign God who made the heavens, the sea and the land, is also the God who is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in love. And that this God loves to save.In our sermon series in the book of Jonah, we saw in chapter 1, Jonah trying to run away from God, and it is his disobedience that leads him down to Joppa, down to the hold of a ship, down to sleep, down into the waves, and down into the belly of a ship. In chapter 2, we meet him at rock bottom. But we learn in that chapter, when you hit the bottom, the God of grace is there to lift you up, so we are to humbly cry out to him!Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons
Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.Last Sunday we began our new series called ‘God’s heart for the world’. We are spending 4 weeks looking at the book of Jonah and seeing that God’s heart is one of love for, and mercy towards, the world. I started the series by looking at Jonah chapter 1 in our all-age service. If you were in attendance last week, you would have appreciated the effort that went into decorating the stage and the way the children and young people got involved and made the story come to life for us! It’s great to be part of a church with so many children and young people! In chapter 1 we see that God is really concerned for Nineveh and wants them to repent and come to Him. That’s why he sends Jonah to go and preach to them (Jonah 1:1-2). This is a little surprising because Old Testament Prophets were usually sent to preach to Israel (God’s people) but Jonah is asked to go and preach against a pagan city who were known for their wickedness. As I was preparing for my message, I kept asking myself the question, ‘who represents us in this story? Are we more like Jonah or are we more like Nineveh?’ Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons
Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 In the last of our series on human identity, entitled “Who am I?” Rob Dunn spoke on our new identity in Christ. As we come to Christ, we become part of the a new creation, where the old has gone and the new has come. Quoting John Stott, we were reminded that to be “in Christ” is to be organically united to Christ, as a limb in the body or a branch is in a tree. It is this personal relationship with Christ that is the distinctive mark of his authentic followers.” As we come to Christ we are reconciled with God. We can have intimacy with him. We saw that the reality of Eden before the fall, with God walking in the garden with his people, will be marked by the new creation as revealed in Revelation 21:1-5. Every tear wiped away, the old has gone, the new is here – “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them.” We now belong to the New Creation. In Christ, the old is gone, we are made new, and He has given us the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of all that is to come. Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.I’ve really been enjoying our current teaching series ‘Who am I?’ The series has helped us to explore fundamental questions about human identity and human purpose. Last Sunday I spoke from Genesis 3 about human rebellion and the redemption that only comes through faith in Jesus. The key verse is Genesis 3:15 – And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers;he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’In the curse on the crafty serpent, we get a glimpse of the gospel. God promises that there will be a redeemer. A person will come from the offspring of the woman, and this person will triumph by crushing the head of the serpent (satan) but will be hurt in the process (a strike on the heel).Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons
Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.We are facing a crisis of loneliness in our increasingly fragmented and individualised Western world. In the UK, nearly half the adult population report feeling lonely at least some of the time, and about 4 million people experience chronic loneliness – that is, feeling isolated, sadness and disconnection often or always. This is tragic, because as human beings we are made for relationships. As we consider our human identity, who we are as God has designed it, the Bible is clear that we are made for meaningful, loving relationships. That is the case because we are made from an overflow of God’s love – made in the image of a Trinitarian God who has existed as a relationship of love between Father, Son and Holy Spirit, for all eternity. As God is a relationship of love, so we are made to know, experience and enjoy that love, and to image that love in the world.Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons
Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word. In continuation of our series looking at human identity, we reflected on how we are designed to work. Work is a central theme that runs through Genesis chapters 1 & 2. In the beginning God was at work creating the heavens and the earth.Work is a gift from God to us and it is something our loving Creator intends for our good. Human labour has intrinsic value and it is invested with dignity.Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons

Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.We are in the middle of a teaching series called ‘Who am I?’ and we are exploring big questions of human identity, such as why do we exist? And what’s our purpose?Last Sunday, the title for the sermon was ‘Royal Image Bearers’ and I preached from Genesis 1:26-2:3. I loved preparing for this sermon because it helped me to reflect once again on the reality that all people have been made in God’s image and this has a lot of significant implications. Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.Who am I? There is much confusion in western contemporary culture over this question of human identity, but it is a question of profound importance, that shapes how we live, what we value, and how we treat others. Over the first few weeks of 2024, we are thinking about what the Bible has to say about this question, and rather than ask “Who does the world say I am?” or even “Who do I say that I am?” we are asking, “Who does God say that I am?”Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons

Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word. Most of us are comfortable with living for Jesus but we find speaking about Jesus far more difficult. When the spotlight is on us at the café, or dinner table, or school gates – we can often be lost for words and lose our confidence. This can leave us feeling discouraged. Why is the last and most important command that Jesus left his disciples, namely the great commission, also seemingly the most difficult?Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons

Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word. This passage of scripture forces us, as the readers, to stop and consider how God has provided for, and blessed us, but also warns us of what will happen if we do not. If we don’t stop and remember all that God has done, we will quickly forget God and become proud (v12-14). Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons
Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.Do you open the Bible each day (or open your Bible app!)? Jesus said that the wise person is the one who hears his Word, and puts it into practice – building their life on solid ground. As a church, we believe that we will glorify God by being Bible-believing – that is being shaped by God’s Word in every way. Sunday morning was full of praise, prayer, fellowship and to listen to God's Word.Do you love Jesus? That’s the only question that really matters. Of course, it assumes that you are aware of his love for you, that you have experienced his love, that you know that “we love, because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19. Jesus came to earth, lived the perfect life, died a sacrificial death, and conquered the grave – all for you! And now he asks, “Do you love me?” It was the same question that he asked Peter three times – and Peter was able to answer, “Lord, you know I love you”. And so Jesus recommissioned him to feed his sheep, to build the church.Head to our dedicated sermon series page to go deeper: www.ccsurbiton.org/sermons
