In this episode, I share my eventful month, which included a fabulous trip to Italy, an unexpected bout with the flu, and the devastating and unprecedented impact of Hurricane Helene on our Florida Gulf Coast.

It all started with exploring Venice, Florence, Siena, Sorrento, Capri, and Rome, soaking in historic sites and delicious food, and even finding a few beaches.

Upon returning, I quickly fell ill, causing delays in my podcast schedule, making me fear losing my beach-loving audience. Then Hurricane Helene hit, bringing devastation to the Gulf Coast where many friends and family live, although Jacksonville Beach was relatively unscathed.

I reflect on the destruction of our beach communities, how we prepare for hurricanes, and how we maintain resilience in tough times.

Through it all, I find solace in the beach, which reminds us of its healing power. I hope this episode offers a bit of hope and connection for everyone facing their own storms.

To thank my loyal listeners, I’m offering a small beachy gift to those who message me at paige@thebeachspeaks.com

The beach is speaking.

In this episode, we explore the remarkable journey of Sindia M. Rivera-Jiménez, Ph.D., a native of Puerto Rico who was born and raised near the ocean. With a deep love for the beach, Sindia built a beautiful life in Puerto Rico, earning a degree in engineering, meeting her husband, and starting a family. The ocean was always a central part of her life.

However, a unique opportunity to advance her career took her away from her beloved beaches to the "swamps" of Central Florida, where she became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Education and an Affiliate Faculty of the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Facing the challenge of teaching Chemistry in English—a language she learned later in life—Sindia's story is one of resilience, adaptation, and maintaining her beach-loving spirit.

In this episode, Sindia shares her experience of transitioning from the shores of Puerto Rico to landlocked Central Florida, coping with the distance from family and the ocean, and finding ways to stay connected to her roots.

For all the beach lovers out there who find themselves far from the coast, Sindia offers hope, inspiration, and practical tips for keeping the spirit of the sea alive, no matter where you are.

What do you do when you're landlocked and need to "reach the beach?"

In this episode, I speak with Mary Carol Moore about her novel Last Bets, set on the Caribbean island of Bonaire. The novel features twists of fate, paranormal elements, high-stakes gambling—and a hurricane! I like to describe it as "Queen's Gambit" meets "White Lotus."

We share some personal anecdotes; I reminisce about playing backgammon with my brother, and we delve into Mary's scuba diving skills and camping experiences. The conversation highlights Mary's deep character development in her writing and her talent as a plein-air painter. I'm reminded of a previous conversation with my guest, Annora, a plein-air painter and how the beach truly connects us all.

Have you ever been at the beach on a full moon?

One of my favorite things to do is sit on the beach and watch the moonrise over the ocean. It elevates my mood and stirs up a feeling of wonder and otherworldliness—watching that bright white globe shining on a velvet black sky, that sparkling trail of light shining across the water following the waves to the shore. It’s just magical—especially when the waves are calm, and no one else is around to disturb the "vibe."

I had been waiting for months to watch the full moon rise, and I finally got my chance; however, when I arrived at the beach, my expectations quickly turned to disappointment. This was not the magical full-moon beach experience I wanted, but it was just what I needed.

Today’s episode is a conversation I had recently with Jessie King Regunberg, author of the book SEARCHING FOR SEASHELLS: An Artist’s Guide to Treasures on the Beach

It’s all about the enchanting world of seashells and how they have touched our lives and sparked our curiosity.

Jessie’s book is a testament to her passion for shells, art, and history. It’s filled with 200 hand-painted illustrations, intriguing facts, and interesting stories about shells you might already have in your collection (I know you have one!) and shells you dream of finding—perhaps along a magical moonlit shore or on a sparkly beach at sunrise.

Now, as you’re admiring all your beautiful shells - ask yourself, what one speaks to your soul? If it could talk, what stories would it tell?

The beach says, “Like seashells, you are beautiful and unique. Each one has a story to tell - and I’m listening.!”

Poem by: E. E. Cummings (1983). “Hist Whist: And Other Poems for Children”, p.13, W. W. Norton & Company

Jessie King Regunberg is an artist and writer in Washington, DC, living with her husband and three children. She trained as a historian at the University of Pennsylvania, and her knowledge of the past informs all her work. I recently had the opportunity to visit one of the beaches on my bucket list—Venice Beach. Venice is on the Gulf Coast of Florida and is often called the “shark tooth capital of the world” because of the plethora of prehistoric shark teeth you can find there. Some are the size of your hand!

Now, I don’t have the greatest record when it comes to finding sharks' teeth, but I know a lot of people are really into it.

It’s like digging for gold—if you know where to go and have the patience to dig, treasure can be found.

As far as Venice Beach was concerned, I did have an idea where on the beach I wanted to go - but I had no clue what kind of treasure I would find.

I hope this story today evokes a happy memory of the beach for you!

In early October 2021, when the post-pandemic world was beginning to open up for travel, we had just discovered that Ernie only had a month's vacation before starting a new job; we decided to go on a 12-day adventure in Costa Rica!

It was last minute, and I had no idea how we were going to pull it off - but I knew my friend and travel agent Judi could make it happen and, true to form, she took care of all the details - from booking flights to finding the hotels and excursions that she knew we would love - she arranged all our transportation and even the Covid tests that we would need to get back into the states - she had every detail covered so that when we got there - all we had to do was enjoy our dream of 12 days of relaxation and adventure in a tropical paradise. Ahhhh. . .

But then - on day 12, something happened.

The moment we walked off the plane, loaded our luggage in the car, and drove home, that peaceful “Ahhhh” feeling I had just hours before suddenly turned to “UGH”—the shock of coming back to “ life.”

Since many of you are getting ready to go on your vacation getaway, I thought it would be helpful for Judi and Cathi, my other travel agent friend and frequent podcast guest, to give us some tips for making that return to real life a little less…shocking.

So, what will YOU do after your next fabulous vacation getaway?

I'm making a list, so if you have any more suggestions - what works for you or something you’d like to try - email me at paige@thebeachspeaks.com, and I'll add it.

Capturing the essence of the beach with my phone is one thing, but in a painting - in real-time - it is a whole other thing. I’m in awe of anyone who can paint in the moment - no photograph- just sitting in nature with a canvas, painting the scene in quick brushstrokes. You have to stay in the present and pay attention.

This painting practice is called plein air, a form of impressionism that my guest Annora does so well. At only 19, Annora is making herself known in our local artist scene at the beach where I live. You can see her sitting at the beach at sunrise with her canvas and palette, making quick brushstrokes across the canvas as the scene changes moment by moment. You could say that the beach speaks to her in a language of shapes and colors - and energy - which she mentions often - and I think every beach lover can relate to that.

But this conversation isn’t just about painting beach scenes; it’s a lesson in not being afraid to “put yourself out there”—to overcome the fear of being judged. It's about recognizing your worth and the value of perseverance.

It’s beach-inspired wisdom from a Gen Z that I needed to hear.

I was a guest on an Instagram live with Amanda from Northern TIdes Studio and Wallace J. Nichols, author of Blue Mind - talking about water, the Blue Mind movement, and the healing properties of the ocean.

Amanda asked how living at the beach has changed me. I don’t know why that question caught me off guard - it was a great question. I wasn’t really sure I had the answer - at least nothing I felt I could articulate at the moment.

If I had the chance to answer the question again, I would say that although I have always felt a connection to the beach and the ocean - now that I live here - we’ve bonded - we’re in a relationship.

In 2020 when the world took a collective pause, I had a lot of time to sit at the beach alone, to listen, and think about the podcast and how I wanted it to grow.

I needed to connect with other beach lovers, and since no one was meeting in person, I went to the next best thing - Facebook. I found the group “I Love the Beach” and posted a question: “What do you love most about the beach?” minutes later, a flood of responses appeared in the comments.

Most comments were about how peaceful, soothing, or healing it felt to be at the beach. And I certainly could relate to that.

But what stood out to me was that nearly everyone said something about the ocean - the water.

I could definitely relate! That’s what I love most about the beach - the water - - there’s a sense of comfort and belonging - it feels like “home.”

I felt compelled to tell a story about this relationship with water, but honestly, I didn’t know what story to tell. I made a list:

Learning to swim by jumping into the deep end of a pool
My first trip to the ocean
Growing up in a house across the street from the river
Sunday afternoon hikes in the woods along a stream
Swim Team . . .

I never really thought about its significance, but being a swim team member was a significant part of my formative years, and that’s when my relationship with water really began.

Listen as I recall my childhood swim team experience: from making the big shift from being an “OK” sprinter to a long-distance “Champion" and how water saved me from drowning from the pressures of college life and beyond.

What influence has water had in your life? Has it made you happier? Healthier? More connected?

“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Be water, my friend.” ~ Bruce Lee

When I started thinking seriously about moving from land-locked Orlando to the beach, the first three questions people would ask were, “What beach?” “Where will you live?” and “What will you do?” I would say, “I haven’t decided what beach yet, but I’m sure I’ll find one with a couple of palm trees where I can hang a hammock, and, I don’t know, I’ll make jewelry out of sea shells, and sell it to the tourists. It was a silly answer, but in my mind, I was serious - if that were what I had to do to live at the beach - I would do it.

Now, I live in a beach house (not a hammock), and instead of seashell jewelry, I’m making a beach podcast! I love hearing stories about how others have used their love for the beach to fuel their life’s passion - how they create that beach connection - that beach mindset - wherever they are.

My guest today, Amanda Esposito, artist and creator of Northern Tides Studio, has a unique way of doing just that - taking her passion for the beach and the ocean to create jewelry that reminds you of how you feel at the beach and your connection to it - wherever you are.

I have been following Amanda on Instagram, and when she posted about her latest creation, “Ocean Love,” I had to get it! She mentioned that she was looking at places in Florida to sell her pieces, so we ended up on a Zoom call to talk about it, and as she started to tell me the story - I stopped her in mid-sentence and said, “Wait, I love this story - would you be willing to share iron on the podcast”? Of course, she said yes - sharing her love for the beach and what it means to her is what her art is all about.

This conversation means a lot to me. First, I met a new friend! Second, hearing Amanda’s story behind the making of her beautiful ocean love necklace makes me love mine even more! I initially bought it as a birthday present to myself. But when I think about it, it’s more than that - it’s a reminder of the days leading up to my birthday - beautiful beach love memories: the day I met my soulmate for the first time - on the beach, our beach wedding, and celebrating my birthday at the beach.

I’m curious: what do you do to capture your special beach moments?

It’s February, so in the spirit of this Month of Love, I asked my soulmate, Ernie, to join me on the podcast because it’s a very special month for us.

Although I’ve talked about how we met and our journey to living out our vision here at the beach on the podcast before, I thought it would be the perfect time for Ernie to share some of his own beach stories and reminisce about our beach adventures together.

  • We talk about growing up in Tampa and always being in the water, camping, and “spring hopping,”
  • You’ll hear Ernie’s stories about a wild encounter he had on an Island beach in Florida and a rare sighting he had off an aircraft carrier
  • We talk about beach adventures we have had together and where we would like to go next. I ask if he has ever considered moving away from the beach.

You’ll have to wait until the end to hear his answer!

I love quotes, especially the ones that when I hear them, I think, " Oooh, I can relate to that - or that is so inspiring! I need to write that one down before I forget it! " I’ll rush to scribble it in a journal or notebook - it’s like I’m attaching a sticky note to my brain - you know, a reminder, to go back to it later. And let me tell you - there are a LOT of sticky notes in there.

However, there’s one quote - it’s actually a question - that when I first heard it, I could “feel” the words, the ideas they invoked, tumbling around my head with an enthusiastic energy that flowed from my brain, through my heart, and then - settled in an anxious knot in my gut, just waiting for the answer.

The quote is the last line from Mary Oliver’s poem The Summer Day:

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

Whether you want to spend your wild and precious life traveling around the world or live out your dream right where you are, my guest today, Alise Saunders, a digital nomad, coach, and freedom seeker, is here to be our trusted friend and travel guide - from her house on the beach - in Greece!

Imagine, you’re about to do what might be the craziest thing you’ve ever done.

And you’re thinking this could be crazy good or crazy stupid.

Then the “what ifs” start to creep into your consciousness: “What if something goes wrong?” “What if I’m not good enough?” “What if it turns out to be nothing but a waste of time and money?”

That’s how I felt three years ago, staring bleary-eyed at my computer monitor, my hand nervously resting on the mouse, guiding a bold black arrow across the screen, stopping to hover over a bright green button that says “publish.”

I spent at least 100 hours working on this podcast and my brain ached. My heart was pounding. This might be the craziest thing I’ve ever done. Just a simple click of a button and I’ll be taking a deep dive into the vast ocean of podcasts.

Will I sink - or swim?

It’s a new year, and I’ve been thinking a lot about this podcast and how it came to be - how what seemed like a crazy thing to do at the time turned out to be something more than just recording my voice and sending it out into the ether. It’s actually helped shapehow I use my voice.

More than that, it’s helped me trust my voice. To trust what I have to say is something you want to hear.

The beach is speaking. I’m so grateful you’re listening,

Recently on The Beach Speaks, I posted an episode sharing my beach story as a guest on Rabiah Coon’s podcast More Than Work.

Today, I’m bringing Rabiah back - this time as my guest - to hear her beach story.

Rabiah currently lives in London, but she grew up near the beach in California. When she said she was coming home to California for the holidays, I thought it would be the perfect time to share her story on the podcast. For many of us, this is a time for sharing with family and friends, and when you listen to her story, you’ll find out that family and friends are two very important things in Rabiah’s life.

In this conversation, Rabiah talks about what it was like growing up at the beach in Southern California and how the beach continues to show up even when she’s landlocked. We also talk about her side gig as a stand-up comic and the important role that service plays in her life.

After hearing Rabiah’s story, I think you’ll understand why her podcast is called More Than Work. It’s a reflection of a way of living that we all can aspire to.

Hey Beach lover, How is the beach speaking to you today?

I’m sure you have noticed that I’ve been doing a lot of solo episodes: like, how I met my soulmate - on the beach, watching fighter jets fly over the beach, and how learning to fly was a lot like moving to the beach - and while it’s been a lot of fun sharing stories about how the beach speaks to me, I thought I’d do something different this time, and share more about my journey to the beach on this episode I recorded with Rabia Coon on her podcast More Than Work.

We first met as members of the “Squad Pod” - a slack group created by Squadcast - the remote recording platform we both use to record our podcasts. It’s a super supportive group where you can ask random questions, get tech advice, promote your show, and my favorite thing to do - collaborate with other podcasters - like Rabiah!

More Than Work is a podcast that shares stories of individuals who have found that their self-worth is determined by more than their job title - it’s one of my favorite podcasts to listen to on my beach power walks - with each step I take along the shore, I listen to her guests describe the steps they took to create a life beyond their “work” - and think about how I have created mine. The stories are different but to me there’s a similar “vibe”- the kind “vibe” you feel when you stand on the beach, staring across the vast ocean - at all the possibilities. So when Rabiah invited me to share my More Than Work beach story on her show - I was thrilled.

This was my first time as a guest on someone else’s podcast, and while I expected to talk about my journey to the beach, what I didn’t expect to come up in conversation were the other parts of my story that go beyond the beach. I have to say, I learned a little more about myself.

It was a little different being on the other side of the mic, as they say - but Rabiah is a great host and a fabulous human.

And. . it was a fun way for me to share one of my favorite podcasts with you!

The beach is speaking. . .

Many of you have asked me how I found the nerve to leave my job - to move to the beach - and not have a job to go to, and what beach? Where was I going to live?

I would laugh and say, I’m sure whatever beach I go to, there will be a couple of palm trees where I can hang a hammock, and I’ll make jewelry out of shells! It sounded silly when I said it out loud, but in my head, I was serious.

How DID I get here? I’ve done a lot of thinking about that recently, about the times in my life that I just said, I don’t know how this is going to work, but I’m going to do it. It’s strange because I always thought of myself as pretty risk averse - not at all fearless - I would rarely try something new if I weren’t reasonably sure I would be good at it immediately. I needed to feel safe.

What I keep coming back to is the moment 25 years ago: alone, sitting in the left seat of a tiny, two-seater Cessna, 152 - about the size of a Barbie car - at the end of an 11,000-foot runway (that’s almost 2 miles long!) waiting for clearance to take off.

My first solo flight.

Today's episode is about how it felt learning to fly and how the experience of getting my pilot's license was a lot like moving to the beach.

I believe that our most powerful memories are etched into our brains by the feelings attached to them. The details might not be the same - but the feelings are, and now that I actually live at the beach, when I think about all that I went through to get here - I can feel it all: from fear and trepidation to awe and joy.

You know I love the beach, but I also love airplanes!

This fact is especially poignant because aviation and learning to fly was one of the (many) surprising characteristics that attracted me to my husband, Ernie (You can hear more about that in my recent episode How I Met My Soulmate - On the Beach”)

Ernie spent the majority of his Navy career on an aircraft carrier where he worked on the F-18s (the same aircraft as the Blue Angels)

Jets aren’t a completely foreign concept to me since I have been around them almost daily in my 20-year career in Corporate aviation - Lear Jets and Gulfstreams are cool, but supersonic fighter jets - In my opinion - are super cool.

The Blue Angels were in town recently for an air show at the beach on Saturday and Sunday, and I wanted to go both days. Because even though I’ve been to many air shows over the years, n my opinion, there’s nothing quite like watching one up close and personal on the beach!

But I had forgotten the announcement that the jets would conduct practice runs along the beach on Thursday. So you can imagine my shock as two navy blue and gold supersonic F-18 fighter jets screamed across the tree tops right over my head - to say that I was thrilled would be an understatement. I was ecstatic!

Immerse yourself in the story of The Blue Angels on the Beach - and find out why I burst into tears! It's one I'll never forget!

If you are a regular listener to the podcast, you’ll know that I often talk about how I met my soulmate, quit my nine to five and moved to the beach - it almost always comes up in conversation when I meet someone new, and we get to talking about the beach.

Of all three, I get the most response from the “met my soulmate” part - like “that’s amazing!” Or “How did you do that?” or “I met my soulmate, too!” - and then they proceed to tell me their story.

I noticed how, in the past several conversations with my guests, the same topic “How we met our soulmate, partner, significant other” - has come up. While talking about her book One Fire Island, Jane Rosen mentioned that she met her husband on a date at the beach on Fire Island, Cathi Taucher met my guest Oneike, the beach lifeguard, at the beach in Negril, and most recently, in the conversation I recorded with Pam Uzell about her love/hate relationship with the beach, she mentioned that she met her soulmate on her birthday, It wasn’t at the beach, but it was a significant time in her life that was the catalyst for her return to loving the beach again.

It made me think about how similar my story was to theirs - I met Ernie, my soulmate, on the beach - on my birthday! I have learned from past experience that when such synchronicities appear, it’s a sign from the Universe to pay attention - in this case, perhaps this is a sign that I need to tell my story, on the podcast, of how I met Ernie on the beach, on my birthday!

Listening to your voicemails is like going on a beach walk, picking up the messages like seashells and adding them to my collection. The voices and stories are different - but what they all have in common is a shared connection to the beach - I love them all - and I’m excited to share them with you!

Thank you Terri Maxwell, Jen Hardy, Terry Brock, Meshell Baker, Keith Wilhelm and Teresa Lisum for these messages. It was so much fun connecting this way!

My intention for this podcast has always been to create a collaborative space where beach lovers can come together as a community - where listeners can become a part of the podcast. - my co - hosts !

I love doing all the things it takes to produce this podcast solo, the beach is speaking is anyone listening?

But regardless of how many people are actually listening, I would still do this podcast because it’s my way of using the gift of my voice to connect with something greater than myself, the Beach and all it represents - and the bonus is - I get to share that connection with you!

It takes a lot of time energy and resources to Put the show together, and your support goes a long way in helping keep the show on the air.

It’s like that symbiotic relationship between the ocean and the beach - the ocean sends waves to the shore and the beach sends them back. What would one be without the other?

If you’re wondering why I’m talking so passionately about community, collaboration, and what it means to me, it’s because I'm so excited to announce that I have launched a Patreon - a membership platform that helps build community and a way for you to contribute to the future of the show -

Today’s guest is Pam Uzell, the creator and host of Art Heals All Wounds - a podcast that’s changing the world - one artist at a time.

Pam and I met as members of the “pod squad,” - the slack community created by Squadcast - a remote podcast platform we use to record our shows.

Pam reached out to me a few months ago with a wonderful story about her love-hate relationship with the beach. It starts out in childhood and ends in her adulthood - with the series of events in between that helped shape and form her sense of self-worth and belonging.

It’s a self-described rom-com of sorts.

We talk about the differences between East Coast and West Coast beaches, how relationships reflect who we think we are or should be, and all the ways we listen to the beach - not just with our ears, but deep within our body - and soul.

Here’s Pam’s story of how her love/hate relationship with the beach became a profound lesson in love, acceptance, and belonging - when she finally chose to listen!

My guest today is Oneike Jackson, the beach manager at the Boardwalk Beach Resort in Negril, Jamaica. I have to say, after editing this episode, I couldn’t stop smiling! His high-vibe Jamaican energy is just that palpable.

Oneike is a great storyteller; however, he did not want to come on the podcast at first. He was shy, and he didn’t know what to say - but his partner Cathi, who has been on the podcast numerous times, said “Don’t worry, Paige is so easy to talk to - it will be fun!” And true enough, when I got him talking, the conversation was. . . jammin’!

One of the things I admire so much about Oneike is that he's not afraid to admit that when trying something new that makes him nervous - his way is to acknowledge it and then "do the 'ting.”

Also, I will NOT close my eyes the next time I get on a water slide!

He is very proud of his island home and eager to share its unique vibe with everyone who visits. It makes me want to hop on a plane and head to Jamaica - right now.

I have some exciting news! The Beach Speaks is now on YouTube! So, if you or anyone you know loves “the Tube” - check it out!

Even if you don’t listen, check out the episode cover photos! They're all mine - just a few drops in the ocean of 40 thousand images I’ve taken over the past few years.

Until next time, stay high vibe and don’t be afraid to "do the 'ting!"

I have a slight obsession with books. My house is filled with stacks of unread novels, coffee table books, and hidden gems waiting to be explored. But today, I want to focus on a specific genre that holds a special place in my heart: beach reads!

A good beach read is more than just a book you read while lounging on the sand. It's a book that transports you to the beach no matter where you are. It's a chance to let go of everyday stress and immerse yourself in a world of relaxation and adventure. And with summer coming to a close, there's no better time to indulge in beachy literary escapism.

Here are five beach reads that are speaking to me right now:

  1. On Fire Island by Jane L. Rosen - This is the perfect example of a book I bought because I heard about it on a podcast! Thsi time it was mine! For more, check out Episode 68: On Fire Island: A Journey of Love, Loss, and Resilience with author Jane Rosen.

  2. Beach House Memories, by Mary Alice Monroe, is the sequel to The Beach House I read earlier this summer. Reading this second book will be like coming back for another summer visit with friends.

  3. Silo by Hugh Howey - I don’t typically go for dystopian post-apocalyptic science fiction when I want to relax, but after binging the first series on Apple TV, I have to read the books now!

  4. When We Believed in Mermaids by Barbara O’Neal. This title popped up on a friend’s Facebook post, and I just had to add it to my list because, well, mermaids!

  5. Florida’s Golden Galleon’s - The Search for the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet - by Robert F. Burgess and Carl J. Clausen This book is perfect for history and treasure hunting fans.

Remember, a beach read doesn't have to be a physical book. Travel magazines about your favorite beach destinations can be just as captivating. And who can resist a good audiobook during a long drive to the coast?

Whether lounging on a sun-soaked beach or simply dreaming of the ocean, good beach reads will transport you to a world of relaxation and wonder.

Even if you can't physically be at the beach, pick up a beach read off your shelf or pick one up at your local bookseller (it feels good to support small businesses) and let your mind escape to sandy shores.

Grab a cool drink, kick back, and dive into the world of beach reads together!

Take a walk with me on the beach while I share some stories about what I collect there. It’s a personal journey through my experiences of collecting shells on my beach walks and the odd and sometimes disturbing things I discovered along the way.

Diving deep into the world of seashell collecting, let’s explore the treasures lost and found at the beach, from mundane items to precious memories with a bit of trash thrown into the mix - and what the beach had to say about that!

“One cannot collect all the beautiful shells on the beach. One can only collect a few. One moon shell is more impressive than three. There is only one moon in the sky.” ― Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the Sea

It’s hard to think about going to the beach and not wanting to take a little something with you to remember being there. It’s like the shore has this magnetic pull, urging you to pick up a seashell or some other treasure and take it home.

But what if you found out that if you took that little piece of the beach - you would be cursed?

On this episode of The Beach Speaks, my guest, Jenny Paul, and I discuss the joys of collecting shells, sand, and souvenirs at the beach. Jenny shares her experiences collecting sand from various beaches worldwide, including the fascinating pink sand of Bermuda and the black sand of Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii.

We reminisce about her connection to the beach, including childhood memories of losing a water shoe and the recent discovery of a silver dog tag on the beach etched with the words "authentic self." She shares a story of collecting something at the beach that might be cursed, adding an intriguing twist to our conversation. All these experiences lead us to reflect on the profound meaning of the things we find on the beach.

I’m so happy that Jenny agreed to share her story of the cursed sand because, sometimes, a “curse” can actually be a blessing! Although neither of us expected that our conversation would take such an existential turn - it did bring up some interesting questions that I’m sure the beach has been asking me, but I guess I haven’t been paying attention - until now.
Is there a greater meaning to what we find on the beach, and what do we choose to keep and why?

This episode is a must-listen for beach lovers and collectors alike. Share it with your friends!

If you’re as passionate about books as you are beaches, you are going to love this conversation with Jane L. Rosen Jane is an author, screenwriter, and former Huffington Post contributor, and today we’ll be talking about her latest book,On Fire Island - a place Jane knows intimately because she’s been a resident there for 30 years.

On Fire Island is a story of love and loss, but even more, it’s about human connection and ways we can help each other through our experiences and empathy.

Here are just some of the topics we covered:

  • The surprising connection I have with Jane’s house and actor/singer Harry Belafonte
  • The unique aspects of Fire Island's car-free environment and distinct town personalities
  • Jane’s experience living on the island during the COVID-19 pandemic and its unique atmosphere
  • Turning a screenplay into a novel and how her fictional characters are inspired by various people that reside on Fire Island
  • Her dream about dolphins followed by an encounter with real dolphins while on a beach walk
  • Jane’s connection to the beach and her belief that loved ones are present there

There’s something extra special about a book when you know a little about the story behind the story - and what inspired the author to write it. On Fire Island is, by Jane’s admission, her best story, and I believe her. You can feel the connection

I hope today’s conversation inspires you to listen closely to how the beach speaks to you and let its message encourage you to explore your unique creative expression. Maybe you’ll be inspired to write a book of your own!

On Fire Island is available wherever you shop for books; however, the beach and I hope you will consider picking up a copy at your local independent bookstore- it's a great way to support the businesses in your community.

Share this episode with a fellow beach book lover!

My guest today is Amanda Soler; the creator and host of the SolFul Connections podcast.

It seems appropriate that her podcast is called SoFul Connections because Amanda embodies connecting on a soul level; it's in her DNA.

I noticed this from the moment we first met - on the virtual social forum Clubhouse; I'm not sure in what “room” we connected or what the discussion was, but what I am sure of is why - it was our soul's connection to the Beach. Of course, that’s what the beach Speaks is all about, right? Stories about our connection to the beach!

When Amanda left me a voicemail on my website asking if I would be interested in "cross-pollinating" our podcasts - I would be a guest on hers, and she would be a guest on mine - I thought: what a brilliant idea to connect.

So, if you’re listening to this podcast because you heard me on Amanda’s, welcome! The beach and I are so grateful you decided to join us!

And if you’re one of my listeners, after hearing her soulful conversation here on the Beach Speaks, be sure to hop on over to Amanda’s show, where you’ll get to hear me tell my soulful beach stories here: Finding a Way to the Beach with Paige

The beach is speaking, and it's all about connection today!

How do you feel about seaweed?

I bet you could smell it as soon as you heard me say the word!

When I think about the beaches here on the Atlantic coast, I never really considered that seaweed could be a problem.

I only notice it when it's washed up in small patches along the shore or in the ocean - but it’s never really gotten in the way of my enjoying the beach.

On the Gulf Coast, however, when a specific type of seaweed piles up on shore, it’s an entirely different story. For people wanting to enjoy a perfect beach day, it’s a smelly, unpleasant nuisance, and for some ocean life, it can be - deadly.

Scientists following the rapidly growing collection of this Sargassum didn’t consider it too much of a threat to the coastline until recently; the seaweed collection generally stayed in the Atlantic Ocean.

However, around March this year reports started flooding the newfeeds of what had now become an apocalyptic-sized 5,000-mile-wide patchwork of Sargassum clumps floating in the Atlantic - making its way toward Florida and other coastlines alongGulf of Mexico, a giant blob of seaweed twice the width of the United States was now threatening to dump smelly and possibly harmful piles across the beaches.

I started to pay more attention to this massive “blob” of seaweed, thinking, “Wow, how awful it would be if that blob reached Cancun!”

If you're a frequent listener to the podcast, you can probably guess why I was suddenly all worried about Cancun. I was headed there in just a few weeks!

Listen to what I learned about seaweed season and what the beach in Cancun had to say about it while I was there.

I learned an important lesson about the beach: it isn't always what you want - but it's always what you need.

Is Australia on your beach bucket list? If it is, you’re going to really like today’s conversation with travel podcasters Lyle and Leanne, who live on the beach in Australia!

Their podcast is called Beach Travel Wine, and I first heard about it when Leanne sent me a message.

She told me that they sold their business and retired to travel, especially the beaches, all over the world - and of course, Australia. They downsized and bought a unit on the beach where they can see the ocean from every room and get to sleep to the sound of the waves.

Apparently, 90% of Australians live within 5km of the beach - so you can see how it's an important part of their lives. While Lyle and Leanne love going to the beach to swim and enjoy the water, one of their favorite things to do is wake up in the morning for a walk along the beach.

The beach is also about connecting with family. Having eight grandchildren it's the perfect place to come together.

At the time we recorded this episode Lyle and Leanne had just returned from a 14-day tour of Mexico that ended in - Cancun. I was just about to travel there, so I was really interested to hear about it.

Something else that I really wanted to hear about was their experience scuba diving and snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and going on a "Reef Sleep" where you sleep out on the deck of a pontoon boat miles from shore on the Reef.

It's just you, a few friends, and the ocean as the sun sets and the stars come out.

We talked about the best beaches in Australia, their travels to Spain, where they are traveling to next, and Lyle describes one of the beaches that many travelers dream of going to but, he thought was . . .well, kind of underrated.

I was recently inspired to step out of my comfort zone and write a letter to someone that I deeply admire - my all-time favorite podcaster Rich Roll, host of the Rich Roll podcast.

Sitting down to write the letter, I thought - wouldn't it be fun to do it in audio form instead - podcaster to podcaster?

It makes sense because, you know me, I love podcasts! My friends joke that I’m always saying, “You know, I heard on a podcast…” and, more often than not, it’s the Rich Roll podcast.

For context: On EP 35 of The Beach Speaks, I talk about attending a retreat in Italy hosted by Rich and his wife, Julie. It’s a significant part of my story about meeting my soulmate, quitting my 9-5, and moving to the beach.

I hope you enjoy my audio “fan letter,” and maybe you’ll be inspired to write one of your own!

Take that first step, and the Universe will conspire to support you.

Here’s the Rich Roll episode that inspired me: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-rich-roll-podcast/id582272991?i=1000607674252

Do you dream of moving to the beach?

I dreamed of moving to the beach for so long, and now I can open my front door and walk down to the beach every day!

One morning I was sitting on the sand with my eyes closed, tuned in to the sound of the waves, and listening to what the beach had to say about my journey to living at the beach, reminding me of what I had to let go of and what I needed to keep.
How did I get here?

It all started with a piano!

In this episode, I invited Alex Sizemore, a Jacksonville Beach, FL native, to help answer your question: "How do I move to the beach?"

Alex has lived at the beach all his life, and as a realtor, he helps people of all ages and financial situations make their dream of living at the beach come true.

I was on the beach taking sunrise pictures with my new iPhone 14pro, and when I opened up my photo app to find some to post on Facebook, I glanced at the number under the “recent” file: 46,454! I wasn’t entirely shocked at the number, but it did make me think about how I could have that many images on my phone! There’s a lot of talk about how our “smart phones” are making us “dumb” - stealing our attention and taking us away from the present moment, and honestly, there are times when I’m on the beach, I’ve had to remind myself to put away the phone and just be. However, I really love capturing moments at the beach with my “smartphone” and sharing those moments with you!

In this episode, I share my story of how I lost and found my beach connection - with my family, my friends, and my phone.

If you’re curious about the sunset photo I described in this story, contact me at thebeachspeaks.com/contact , enter the words “beach photo” in the comment section, and I’ll send you a digital copy - just for you!

If you want to see more of my beach photos and videos - and get a glimpse into my beachside adventures - follow The Beach Speaks on Instagram or Facebook. post a comment or send a message and let’s keep the conversation going.

What do you think about when you hear the word, Joy? I’ve noticed in many conversations recently that Joy has come up a lot - like, What makes you feel joy? How can you bring more of it into your life? and If you’ve "lost that joyful feeling," - how do you get it back?

We all know what joy is - that feeling of pure pleasure and happiness - but today, my guest Marc Cordon has me thinking about this concept in an even more powerful way - what he describes as the “Joy Revolution.”

Marc is the master of turning a lighthearted conversation into a deeper story of the hero’s journey - with a twist of joy - and it’s all connected to the beach!

I love a good beach story - and I want to hear yours! Click the message link in the show notes or on my website and tell me about it!

Also, I’ll be taking the show on the road soon! So, if you have an idea of a fabulous beach I should visit - let me know, and I’ll add it to my beach bucket list!

ABOUT THE GUEST:

Marc Cordon, MPH, is a positive psychology coach, multi-time TEDx speaker, host of the Golden Mic Podcast, and author of Beyond Resilient: The Coach’s Guide to Ecstatic Growth.

When I think about my 2023 beach bucket list, the ones at the top are on the Gulf Coast - the ones on practically every travel guide’s top 10 Florida beaches, like Caya Costa, Captiva Island, Sanibel, Destin, and Pensacola.

Jensen Beach was not on my bucket list, but when I got a chance to go - even though I had a lot of work on the podcast left to do - how could I say no? When I hear "go to the beach," - I'm on my way!

I spent more time in the hotel room trying to edit and publish an episode, battling a series of tech issues, stressing out over some arbitrary deadline I created for myself - and missing out on precious time on the beach!

The beach was speaking to me - and I wasn’t listening.

I love exploring new beaches (and revisiting old ones) because each one has a different message for me - if I listen. What I don’t know, the beach knows.

How is the beach speaking to you today?

This episode is a continuation of the theme, close encounters of a marine kind, from Episode 56, which I recorded with my friends, John and Jennifer.

I thought I’d start out telling one or two of my own stories of scuba diving with my family; I was certain that recalling these events would be like an easy drift dive in the crystal clear waters of a Florida Spring, however, as I sat down to take notes, it felt more like doggie - paddling in the murky water of my memories. I could recall the events - but few of the details!

I thought it might be helpful, and maybe a little more entertaining, if I invited my daughter, Baylee, and son, Austin, to join in on the conversation.

Be sure to listen to the end when I sit down with my soulmate Ernie to tell me about a once-in-a-lifetime dolphin encounter while aboard - of all things - an aircraft carrier!

Are you ready to swim with the barracudas, pet some manatees, and watch a pod of dolphins? Put on your swim fins, and let's go for a dive!

Happy new year, Beach lovers!

I just wanted to check in and tell you a little about what I have planned for The beach Speaks in 2023.

Thank you for subscribing and continuing to share the beach love - it means a LOT to me.

I just got back from a whirlwind week between Christmas and New years traveling around the Tampa area visiting our close friends - our "Tampa crew" - and a surprise visit to one of the gulf coast beaches on my bucket list! Anna Maria Island!

Also, stay tuned for more stories of marine encounters, including a surprise encounter with apiranha and a one-of-a-kind dolphin sighting - from an aircraft carrier!

In the next few months, I’ll be visiting some beaches along the Atlantic coast, so you’ll hear more about that - and then. . .I’m going to Cancun!

I’ll be hosting/recording another sunrise sound bath if you're in the Jacksonville beach area: click here https://www.eventbrite.com/e/soundbath-at-the-beach-with-paige-and-friends-tickets-487294871077?aff=eand to see what it’s all about. If you miss it, don't worry - I'll post a replay.

Now is the perfect time to catch up on the episodes you might have missed…check the show notes for links to some of my favorites!

I was on an exercise power walk on the beach (which is really kind of a misnomer because I stop so much to take pictures and videos - I’m not sure how much “exercise” I’m getting!) brainstorming themes for the podcast when I began thinking about all the marine life in the ocean, which got me thinking about SCUBA diving, and of course, our friends John Bailey and his wife Jennifer Young immediately came to mind because, well - they are super into diving. I knew they would have some cool stories to tell.

I decided to call the episode “Close Encounters of the Marine Kind” - and it would probably need to be in two parts: one where they tell their stories, and then I can share mine!

John and Jennifer live outside of Tampa - they're part of a group of our close friends that I call our “Tampa/St Pete crew”

John, an environmentalist who studied at the University of Florida is an exceptional underwater marine photographer
Jennifer is a network engineer who is exceptional at shooting lionfish and swimming with (and dare I say swimming from?) sharks!

It’s been a long time since I’ve been SCUBA diving - crazy, right? I mean, I live in Florida! The beach is clearly saying to me, “It's time to update your PADI certification!"

Stay tuned for Part Two coming up next, where I relive some of my own close encounters of the marine kind. I might even have a few surprise guests!

Remember the commercial for Calgon bath powder? The one where a woman, totally frazzled and exhausted from the day's chaos, cries out: “Calgon, take me away!” Then she magically appears in a bubble bath, soaking in an oasis of relaxing healing water.

When I was a kid, I thought it was just a funny commercial, but over the years, when I became that frazzled, exhausted woman, “Calgon, take me away!” had a brand new meaning. The idea of a bubble bath that could magically transport me to a beach oasis was no longer funny - it was necessary.

A few years ago, when I was deep into learning about mindfulness, meditation, and energy healing - I discovered a new kind of “bath” - sound baths.

In this episode, you'll hear:

    • How I discovered this magical elixir that’s like "Calgon for the soul"
    • My profound sound bath experience on the beach
    • What a sunrise sound bath on the beach REALLY sounds like!
    • BONUS: ocean sounds, crystal bowls and Shanti bells

I really hope you enjoyed this "Calgon Take Me Away" sunrise sound bath on the beach episode, and if you’re into it, I’d love to share more sound bath experiences with you!

Go to my website https://thebeachspeaks.com/ and click the subscribe button: I will send you a message letting you know when I’m offering my next sound bath event, and I will also include a personal beach meditation that you can listen to any time.
Namaste, Beach Lovers!

Aloha Beach Lovers! I’ve been talking a lot about the not so fun aspects of beach life - hurricanes. I thought you might need a break from that and want to hear more about the more pleasant aspects of beach life, so I called Cathi - my go-to beach travel expert and super fan of the podcast, because, lucky her, while we were battling hurricane force winds here, she was basking in the gentle island breeze - in Maui ,Hawaii!

I have to admit, I don’t know why Maui isn’t super high on my beach adventure bucket list. What is it about Maui that everyone I know wants to go there?

Fun fact: According to statistics released by the state of Hawaii, last year nearly 2.3 million visitors set foot on the island of Maui – put it this way, that’s the entire population of Houston, TX!

I read in a blog that "Out of the eight Hawaiian Islands, Maui is by far the most unique." It said that "As soon as you step foot on the 'Valley Isle' you’ll understand why it deserves the title of the must-see island in Hawaii" -the pristine beaches, blue waves, lush forests, hidden waterfalls, and two volcanoes!

But wait, there’s more! Maui has been repeatedly voted number one by several travel magazines - and Travel + Leisure named Maui the 6th Most beautiful island in the world!

Ohhh, the most beautiful islands in the world?! That sounds like a great topic for a future episode! What do you think? I’m definitely up for that, but for now. . .

Let’s find out what Maui is really like - from someone who’s right there - now!

A friend of mine from “up North” asked me what’s it like to be in a hurricane? That got me thinking about my past 22 years living in Florida. How many hurricanes had I been in?

I grew up in the mountains of Pennsylvania. The only “natural disasters” I ever experienced were blizzards - which were fairly common and not all that disastrous. It wasn’t until I moved to Florida that I had ever been in an actual natural disaster - a hurricane.

I had just moved to Orlando when four hurricanesrolled through Florida - one right after the other:

Charlie, Francis, Ivan, and Jeanne.

Don’t you love how hurricanes have “everyday” names?

It makes sense to give hurricanes a name because it makes it really easy to talk about them later, like: “Remember when Andrew came one night and took our roof ?” Or, “Katrina - yeah - she was bad

And, like people, hurricanes have different personalities, are difficult to predict, and you never quite know what they’re going to do.

In this episode, I tell my story of two significant hurricanes in my life (so far): my first, Charley, and my last, Ian.

**The hurricanes were roaring, the beach was speaking, and I was listening!

Ever since Hurricane Ian hit Florida a few weeks ago, I told you I would do an episode about what it’s like to be in a hurricane at the beach - and I fully intend to do that - soon, However, in the meantime, as I start collecting hurricane stories, I thought it might be interesting to hear from one of my fellow podcasters, Kevin Lowe, who lives a few hours south of us near Daytona Beach.

A few days after the hurricane I reached out to see if everything was OK where he was and asked if would he would like to hop on the show and tell us what it’s like to experience a hurricane, especially when you’re completely blind! You might be surprised by his answer!

I did go a little off course in the middle of our conversation to talk about bioluminescent kayaking. We were talking about light, and electricity, and well. . .
I was inspired!

Did I ever tell you about the time I ran away from summer camp to go to the beach? Well, I guess I might be a little dramatic - I didn’t really “run away.” It was more like I “wandered off.”

One summer when I was about 7 years old my parents joined a private boat club on the long island sound that had tennis, boating, and. . . a beach! We didn’t own a boat, but my parents were really into playing tennis. I couldn’t care less about that -the beach was calling, and I just had to go!In this episode, I invited my "sister goddess" and beach lover Ramona to tell us about her recent adventure to Greece, and while her experience isn’t exactly like my summer camp beach story, it does remind me of that idea that when a certain place keeps calling to your soul - sometimes, you have to take that detour, follow the path the Universe has laid out for you and just go for it!

Welcome to my 50th episode!! Now you might be thinking, “Ok, 50 is a good number - but what makes it so special? Why not 100?” Well, here’s the deal, according to the latest podcasting statistics, in the past several years a LOT of podcasts started, but the truth is most of those shows are - dead. There are many good reasons why a show ends but most of the time it’s because people realize that podcasting can be really hard, and really lonely.

Then there’s this thing called “pod fade” where you get tired of all the effort and wonder “Is anybody listening?” and then, you just fade away. I heard that “pod fade” often hits you around the 50th episode. So, the fact that I made it to 50 and I’m still here means a lot, because, honestly I was seriously thinking about packing up my microphone and quitting the show.

Instead, I came up with a list of the top five downloaded episodes. It was the perfect thing to remind myself of how the show has grown, and it inspired me to keep going.

So let the countdown begin!

5. EP 6 Beaches Go Green with Anne Marie Moquin

4. EP 34 Paige’s Beach Adventure (part 2) Costa Rica!

3. EP 1 Rachael Todd Speaks on the Balanced Life.

2. EP 7 Stress, Addiction and Healing with Mindfulness: Gaya Kouba

1. EP 46 Let’s Talk About Death and Life with Sacred Servant Nada Frazier

Three Honorable Mentions:

EP 32 Customize Your Beach Vacation! With Judi Dunlap

EP 42 Let’s Go to Jamaica! With Cathi Taucher

EP 35 Meet Your Soulmate, Quit Your 9 to 5, and Move to the Beach! My Story

My guest today, Emily Pasnak-Lapchick, lives in Saint Petersburg, FL (we call it St Pete) with her life partner Andres and two cats (there seems to be a theme with cats lately - since my recent guest Alise Sauders travels with her two cats. It just occurred to me that I have a lot of friends and family that have two cats, and I’m allergic to cats!

But what I’m NOT allergic to is St. Pete! And St Pete is what you’ll get to hear more about in this episode.

Emily and I talk about her deep connection to the beach (and which one is her favorite), how she moved from Orlando to St Pete then New York City, and then back to St Pete, (‘cause you know wherever you are, the beach is going to call you back somehow, some way)

You’ll also get to hear about:
Her work in social justice
The creation of her business Chrysalis Exchange
Coaching and co-creation for social impact
What is an Energy Leadership Index (ELI) Master Practitioner?

You can be tumultuous and strong

Is traveling to Greece on your bucket list? It’s definitely on mine! So, when my friend Cathi Taucher asked me if I might be interested in going on an amazing Greek island tour that she has planned - well, yeah, of course! While she was telling me about it, I said: "hold on - this is something I bet my listeners would be interested in, so why don’t you hop on the show and tell us all about it!"

Even if Greece isn’t on your list - I think you’ll still want to listen because it’s not all about Greece. We talk about what is bucket list travel. Is it just something we just dream about? Can we really do it? If so, how???

Think about what’s on your bucket list. What’s your dream destination? Send me an email at paige@thebeachspeaks.com or a voicemail (just click the link in the show notes) and let me know. Let’s make it the topic for another bonus episode!

Ok, I’m ready to go to the Greek Islands - are you coming with me?

Wouldn’t it be great if you could just leave your job, travel AND make a living doing it?

In 2018, Alise left her corporate life and six-figure salary, feeling like she wasn’t living life fully. She created her first business, a virtual bookkeeping company, and two years later realized and embraced her dream of being a travel blogger.

She and her husband Gregg, let their apartment lease expire, sold or gifted most of their belongings, and with no home to return to, they (along with their two cats) set out on a transformational travel journey

Sounds beachy-breezy, right? Well, for Elise it meant a lot more than just packing a bag and heading out on the road. It meant healing trauma she had been hiding from from since childhood and get past the beliefs that she thought were keeping her safe, but were really just holding her back and making her physically sick.

But this isn’t all we talk about, there’s plenty of beachy stuff, too!

Like:

  • What is was like growing up at the beach
  • Traveling to the Florida keys, dolphin hugs and frozen key lime pie
  • The resort in Costa Rica that we both fell in love with, ocean kayaking and deserted beaches

Be sure to listen to the end where Elise tells me what they did to travel in peace with two cats who really don’t like change - you’ll probably never guess. I thought it was brilliant!

This episode is a bit of a departure from my typical beachy conversation - I mean, what does an end-of-life, death doula have to do with the beach?

Please stick with me on this one because once you hear my guest, the Sacred Servant, Nada Frazier, I think you’ll have a good idea why I invited her back to the podcast.

My first conversation with Nada was in 2019 when the podcast was just beginning- episode 13 - and since then, it’s been one of my most downloaded episodes. I highly recommend that you go back and listen - since it will give you an idea of what it means to be a death doula and how we can all think about death - and life - a little differently.

What I’d like you to think about today is conscious community and freedom to live a happy, healthy life - which is what we love about the beach! It’s where we go to feel that sense of peace and ease, healing and happiness. And well, if you have listened to my story, you’ll know the beach has also been my relief from pain and loss.

Our conversation today isn’t so much about death - it’s more about our experience with it - personally and as a community.

Some of the topics we cover are:

Moving to the beach during a pandemic

Life and Death coaching, Being a Scared Servant

Conscious community and collective consciousness

Our mental health - and the increasing benefit of telehealth

and . . .What is a “Death Cafe?”

Radio Trop Rock is speaking and The Beach is listening - because it's all about the music!Have you heard of Tropical Rock or Trop Rock? I have to admit I didn’t until today’s guest, Eric Babin reached out to me with a story about how he left the Navy and went from hosting house parties for local bands from Florida to Texas and in between, traveling to beach music festivals just for fun, to a second career as owner of an internet radio station - Radio Trop Rock.

So what is Tropical Rock? Well, if you Google it like I did, it’s described as a genre of popular music that incorporates elements and influences of rock, reggae, country, folk, and calypso - inspired by an island style: think Jimmy Buffett wastin’ away in Margaritaville" - or the Zac Brown Band with their "toes in the water, ass in the sand." Yeah, I think you get it.

I you Google “Trop Rock” chances are Radio Trop Rock will be top of the list because for the past five years in a row Radio Trop Rock has earned EVERY award within the industry!

Yeah, I’d say in the Tropical Rock world, they’re kind of a big deal. But just like the music, Eric is as laid back, just livin’ the beach life, as it comes. For him, the musicians and the fans are the big deal.

In this episode Eric describes:
His love of the beach and beach music
What it was like hearing Jimmy Buffett for the first time
Cruising tropical islands while in the Navy
The musicians, radio hosts, and iconic tropical bar owners he’s met along the way
And if you listen to the end, there’s a surprise visit from Amazon’s very own Alexa*!

If you need some beachy tunes to listen to while sipping on that Margarita or Coconut Rum drink, search Radio Trop Rock on the world wide web and listen to your favorites - and maybe hear some new ones!

Do you ever wonder why bad things happen to good people?

My guest today, Kevin Lowe, believes everything in this life happens for a reason, and a good reason at that. For the first 17 years of his life Kevin saw the world just like everyone else. But for the past 18 years has only seen the world through the eyes of the blind.

Kevin admits that living in a town with "Beach" in its name (Daytona Beach) he takes the beach for granted most of the time, but the truth is - the beach truly does speak.

So, what’s it like to experience the beach when you can't see it? Listening to Kevin's story will open your eyes to a new way of seeing the beach.

Be sure to listen to the end because there’s something in Kevin’s story that might surprise you - a unique skill he learned. Of all the ways I’ve seen blind people navigate in this world, I didn’t see that coming!

If you want to hear more inspiring stories of people who are shining the light on the positive side of life, check out Kevin’s podcast, The Lowe Down with Kevin Lowe. Hey, Beach Lovers! You know when you meet somebody, and there’s something about their energy and excitement for life - you just want to know more?

Well, that’s my guest Elikqitie - the host of Travel Gluten Free podcast. I met her at
PodfestExpo in Orlando. We were sitting in on a session about how to use Canva for our podcast, and the person that was supposed to present couldn’t make it, so the emcee asked if there was anyone in the room that knew Canva, and Elikqitie chimed in from the back of the room: "I can show you some of my tips" - and before we knew it, she was upfront with her laptop projected on the screen, showing us all her tips and tricks, and well, it was just an example of what’s in her nature - helping others find ways to work around life’s challenges.

So afterward, I went up to thank her and learn a little bit more about her podcast, and of course, The topic of the beach and beach travel came up - we discovered we had a lot of beach adventures in common - So, as many podcasters do - we decided to do a podcast guest swap!

Today we talk about what the beaches are like on the Pacific Coast, some of her best - and worst travel adventures, and what it’s like to travel gluten-free - especially when you’ve been diagnosed with celiac disease where even the slightest exposure to gluten can really make you sick- and that’s no fun

And while you might not be “gluten-free” - I think we can all relate to the idea that regardless of your limitations, it’s about freedom. It’s like Elikqitie says "You can still enjoy your life. You can still travel. Don’t let your autoimmune disease or any disability you have take away your freedom to enjoy life the way you want to. . .so go out there, learn what you have to do, and enjoy life!"

Hey Beach Lovers, how is the beach speaking to you today?

I’m having one of those days where it’s been difficult to do any work. The weather is beautiful, and I can hear the beach - and it’s calling my name!

I’ll admit, I struggle with discipline and consistency - especially with this podcast. And like many creatives, I’d rather be doing the fun, inspiring things - like recording a conversation with a guest- than doing the less than inspiring tasks that you know need to be done like writing show notes, editing the audio, creating social media posts - which I really do enjoy!
But, it takes so much time! When can I go to the beach?

So, what’s a beach lover to do when there’s work to be done, and all you want to do is play?

Well, it seems like Cathi Taucher has that figured out. And in today’s episode, we talk about how she runs a successful travel business while living only a few yards from the beach - on Seven Mile Beach in Negril, Jamaica!

Today, we dive into the topics:

  • What it’s like to live and work in a beach paradise
  • Are people traveling more? Where are they going?
  • The essential things we need to do when planning a beach vacation
  • Why it’s so important to plan leisure time into your schedule- even when you don’t think you have the time - or the money.

*Be sure to listen to the end to hear Cathi’s story about how she met a very* attractive man on the beach - and what happened next!

Are you craving some beach time? I’ve been noticing lately that some people seem to be able to tap into that essence of the beach at a moment’s notice, regardless of where they are, and then there are those who need a little bit of help getting there.

How do you tap into that essence of the beach? When people ask me “what’s your podcast about?” and I tell them “the beach,” practically everyone replies: “I love, the beach! I want to live there!” So I’ve been thinking about some ways to get YOU to the beach - wherever you are.

Because, my dear beach lover - If you can’t get to the beach, I want to bring the beach to you!

What do you do when you’re in a funk? Do you wallow in your feelings, in thoughts of sadness, self-pity or resentment? - or maybe you stuff it all down, toss a blanket of positivity over it and act like everything’s just beachy"

Been there, done that. In fact, for the first few months of this year, I was right there - not full-blown depression - just that sad feeling that followed me around like a Charlie Brown raincloud.

Imagine everywhere around you it’s sunny - not a cloud in the sky, except for one lonely raincloud that just so happens to be right above your head. Wherever you go, it goes.

And there’s nothing anyone can do or say that will help you feel better. You just have to see it, feel it, and then:

Let. It. Go.

That’s what my friend Judi and I are talking about today.

She had been in a pretty deep funk and was telling me all about it when I stopped her and said - this would make a great topic for the podcast! So we hopped on Squadcast (my favorite for remote recording) and recorded our chat.

So, if you’ve been in a funk, I hope after listening, you’ll feel a little more like stepping out from under that Charlie Brown rain cloud and into the beachy sunshine.

Let’s do this!

Let’s be honest, how grateful are you? Do you practice gratitude every day?

It's one thing to be grateful for the good things in your life, like your health, your family, your job, but. . .

What about the not-so-good? What if you just found out you have cancer, lost a family member unexpectedly, or got laid off?
Can you look for the gratitude in that? It’s a challenge - it’s like exercise - you have to work that gratitude muscle every day.

I have been thinking about my “gratitude fitness,” and - it just so turns out that today’s guest wrote a book about it!

One of the things I loved about Sharon’s story was how the Beach was behind it all - how a deep love for the beach had been instilled in her as a young child, and now, living in Colorado, the beach still speaks to her every day.

If you are interested in getting a pair of gratitude sunglasses or a copy of Sharon's new book: Graticise 365, you can find those and more of her offers on her website: Graticise365.com

Let's talk Beach rituals for a minute - do you have any? If so, what makes them so meaningful? Is it healing? Connection? And, how about the "perfect" beach body - what do you think about that?

To explore these ideas, I invited a fellow podcaster and beach lover, Chris Angel Murphy (they/them), to talk about their favorite beach rituals - and, what started as a fun conversation about salt baths, hypnotherapy, and cruising the beaches around Los Angeles, quickly morphed into the topic of having the “perfect" beach body.

Let’s face it, haven’t we all been a little anxious about not having the perfect beach body or felt self-conscious wearing a bathing suit in public, where all your insecurities are laid bare on the beach towel - where everyone can judge those body parts that you prayed would look different.

What if baring your body felt not just uncomfortable, it actually felt - unsafe?

That was Chris Angel’s experience, and even though they said parts of it felt a little embarrassing to tell,I felt like it was a beautiful opportunity to share and honor ourselves - as we are. Their story is, at times, humorous and yet self-affirming and authentic - and that’s what makes them so relatable.

While you might not feel like rushing to the nearest topless beach after listening to this episode, perhaps you’ll feel a little less anxious about being beach body ready the next time you put on that bathing suit and head out for some sun, sand, and surf!

Because, as Chris Angel says: "Everyone is beach body ready."

Are YOU on a quest to be Beach Body Ready, or have a beach ritual you'd like to share? Please send me a Voicemailand tell me about it! It’s super easy:

Ep 37 The Beach Speaks to Paige: Bonus Episode
My original intention for these bonus episodes was to share something short and sweet: stories, comments, tips, or maybe a meditation - something light to listen to in between the more in-depth episodes.

However, as much as I want this to be uplifting, I feel like I would be remiss if I didn’t first acknowledge what’s going on in the world right now with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine - the horrific suffering and loss. It's heartbreaking, yet when I witnessed the heroic resistance of the Ukrainians, I was going to say it’s inspiring, but that doesn’t seem to be the right word.

I guess I’m in awe. What would I do in a situation like that?

You know how conversations start with the question: “How are you doing?" Or, "How’s it going?" And typically, without thinking about it, you say something like: “I’m good” or “Doing OK.”
I mentioned this to someone the other day - that some days are "just beachy!" and some that are well, for lack of a better word: "un-beachy." Some days I feel all love and light, and then there are the times I just want to crawl under the covers and stay there all day long - typically when it's cold and dreary, and there’s no sunshine - yes, we do have those days here at the beach.

How about you? What do you do on those un-beachy days?

What helps me is first to recognize that “this too shall pass,” and then find at least one thing I can be grateful for, and, if I can’t reach the beach for whatever reason, I’ll pick up my phone and scroll through my 30k beach photos and videos, listen to some music, or a podcast that makes me laugh.

Like, Beach Too Sandy, Water Too Wet - a comedy podcast where The hosts do dramatic readings of actual star Yelp reviews that, while I’m sure are meant to be serious, are actually really funny.
I tried looking for some Yelp reviews of my beach to share, but I couldn’t find anything very entertaining. So, if you happen to come across a beachy yelp review, please share! Leave a voicemail or email, and I'll include it in the show.

Speaking of sharing, I have a listener voicemail to play for you. It’s from Hillary Rea, who wanted to share one of her favorite beach memories.

You might be interested to know that Hillary is a storytelling coach!

Have you ever felt like you were stuck in a holding pattern in the way you’re living your life? You knew that something different needed to happen; you just didn't knowhow to make it happen.

That was me. Until one day I woke up and thought NO. This is NOT how I want to live my life.

What did I do next? I declared: “I want to meet my soulmate, quit my 9 to 5, and move to the beach!”

Hello Beach Lovers! 2021 is almost over and I’m in a bit of a scramble to wrap up this episode - part 2 of my recent Beach Travel Adventure - and send to your earbuds before it’s 2022!

In this episode I attempt to recap the beauty and wonder of 12 days in Costa Rica with my dear friend and luxury travel specialist, Judi ( who just so happened to plan the whole trip for me and my husband) - the honeymoon we didn’t get to take, since we got married right before the pandemic lockdown in 2020.

We talk about:
The benefits of choosing a vacation specialist
Boutique hotels and all-inclusive resorts
Luxurious living while being totally immersed in nature with Monkeys, Sloths and tropical birds
Hiking in the Rainforest, Waterfalls, Volcanoes and, of course. . .
The Beach!

It was so difficult to pare it down to just the highlights (we did a LOT in 12 days) and interestingly enough, what I thought would be just a fun recap of a vacation adventure actually turned out to be a deeper conversation about connection: to ourselves, to the world and to our vision, and how to recreate that experience of peace, ease and wonder in our everyday life - once the vacation is over.

I hope you enjoy this conversation and that, after listening, you would think about what you can do in the year ahead to:

Re-connect with the beach
Return to your soul and
Re-imagine your life…

Right where you are.

Hey Beach Lovers!

Can you believe 2021 is almost over? How about those New Year's intentions you made way back in January?

For me, my intentions this year tended to ebb and flow like the tides - but I managed to hold steady to one: my “word” for the year which was "connected" and two: beach travel adventure!

For today’s episode, I invited my good friend and luxury travel expert Judi Dunlap to help me “unpack” some magical stories I wanted to share from my recent adventure down the historic California Pacific coast - a trip she so beautifully helped put together for me and my husband.

We talk about the travel mindset, leaving space for surprises (and wow did this trip have some surprises) making connections - with nature, with our spirit, with others, and of course,

The Beach! ⛱

I have to say, after reflecting on this episode, I can really see how my intentions to create connection and beach travel have manifested in such an abundant and meaningful way for me this year. I’m so grateful!

This was just one part of our nearly month-long travel adventure where, after our week beach hopping along the Cali Coast, my soul partner, Ernie, and I spent 12 days exploring all things Costa Rica. I can’t wait to tell you all about the magic we encountered there!

Stay tuned: Part 2 of my Beach Adventure recap: "The Costa Rica Experience" will be coming to your earbuds, soon!

Most of all, I hope this episode has inspired you to create a beach adventure of your own. It’s never too late. . .don’t wait for that elusive “some day” - state your intention, and take at least one step toward your dream - TODAY

In this episode, hear the details of my upcoming BEACH ADVENTURE that my dear friend and (occasional) co-host, Judi Dunlap customized for me!

The opportunity to travel came up last-minute - we only had about a month to plan - so I called Judi to work her Travel Agent magic to help make it happen.

Some of the topics we discussed:

  • How to maximize the time you have to “do it all” (and still stay within a budget)
  • How Judi customized our experience, and details we would never have considered
  • Why we ditched the rental car and hired a driver

Hey Beach Lovers - I never thought I’d say this but my guest today, Terri Maxwell, just might be more of a beach lover than I am - and that’s saying a lot!

In addition to being a true beach lover, Terri is the founder of Shift/Co a conscious business growth platform ™ created BY conscious entrepreneurs FOR conscious entrepreneurs.

If you’ve been listening to the podcast for a while, chances are you’ve heard me mention ShiftCo - numerous times. That’s because, this amazing platform has helped me grow my business - and this podcast - in ways I never thought possible.

So what does all this have to do with The Beach?

When you hear Terri’s story about how the beach pretty much saved her business and her life - I think you’ll get it.

*Subtle Warning: A small portion of today’s conversation mentions addiction and child abuse - I just wanted to acknowledge that ahead of time, in case some of you are sensitive to those issues, and because, well, I care about you.

=>If you share Terri’s vision for using business as a force for good, and if you're ready to grow a conscious company that can change the world, join the Shift/Co movement.

I’ve been feeling lead to record some shorter episodes where I call up a fellow beach lover who is actually AT the beach , and find out what it’s like where they are - like the “live on scene" reporter” we see on the news - but way more beachy.

When I heard my friend Laura Gomez was traveling to her home town in Puerto Rico, I said “Hey! I’ll call you when you’re there and you can tell me what going on!”

Laura grew up in the small beach town of Luquillo, located on the northeast coast of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico . This is where she felt an innate deep connection to nature, especially the beach, and learned to trust its guidance.
Now, as a therapist, she guides others to listen to and trust their inner wisdom, as well as follow its guidance.

If you're wondering why I keep referring to Laura as a "Beach Goddess" well, it’s because she and I are part of a small “goddess group” that we created a number of years ago, and our favorite place to gather is - you guessed it - the Beach!

Hey Beach Lovers,

Today’s topic relates to accessibility - to the beach, that is.

The idea came to me when I heard Keith Casebonne the host of YOU FIRST, a Disability Rights Florida Podcast, talking about eco-ableism.

I know, I know I know - you’re thinking What is that? And, really, what does Disability Rights FLorida and the Beach have in common anyway?

Think: Beach chairs and straws. . .

This episode got me thinking about what I can do to help people connect with the Beach - because, as we beach lovers know, it’s our happy place! And, everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy it.

You know those ocean sounds you listen to when you want to relax, meditate, or fall asleep? Have you ever wondered where those sounds were recorded?

Well, Christie Pratt did - and she turned that thought into a podcast that she calls Journey of Relaxation where she just hopped in her car, drove to the Atlantic coast and started recording Ocean sounds!

She began her journey at a beach on the coast of Maine and from there she started traveling south stopping at different beaches along the way to record the Ocean sounds.

When I heard about what she was doing, I thought it would be a really interesting topic to explore - and one you might be interested in, too.

Have you ever had the inspiration to create an amazing product - one that could simplify your life?
It's so simple that you're certain someone must have already come up with the idea. Then - surprise, surprise! - you discover it doesn’t exist!

What would you do?

That’s exactly what my guest Terri Bacheller, a busy mom with a servant’s heart, was asking herself while at the beach one afternoon, trying to enjoy herself AND keep all the kids “stuff” all in one place.

You know the scene: the kids racing to the water, leaving a trail of wet towels and assorted beach gear in their wake.
Wouldn’t it be great if you had some thing to keep all that stuff together?

That, dear Beach Lovers, is where Terri’s journey to create the “My Beach Tree” began.

It’s been quite a journey - from market research and development, to auditioning for Shark Tank (a big part of the story) to fundraising . . .

All with the mission to create a product that would SIMPLIFY LIFE so you can STRESS LESS and ENJOY MORE!For more information about My Beach Tree:

Hey Beach Lovers, was there ever a time when you were just sailing through life and career – you’ve mapped out your course, and have it all figured out - everything is “beachy.” It wasn’t always easy- you had to work hard - and there was some stress, but, you’re an “achiever” – you’re used to some rough surf. You can handle it.

Then. . .a series of waves come along that knock you off course – each one taking you a little farther away from where you thought you’d be.

Until, out of the depths of life’s ocean, the BIG ONE hits and it’s one of those waves that completely pulls you under and then washes you up on the shore. You can’t even think straight, your map is gone, and your body and your brain hurts - I mean, really hurts.

What do you do then?

In this episode, you’ll get to hear my guest, Jenn Shepherd, tell her story – of facing that giant wave, and having to make a complete life pivot: guided by her intuition, the principles of yoga and, of course, the healing power of the Beach.

So, let’s settle into our beach chairs, bask in the warm sun and ocean breeze and listen as Jenn tells us her tale about leadership, intuition, travel, yoga, waterfalls and. . .
I’ll let her tell the rest. It's pretty inspiring!

2020 is almost over, Beach Lovers! Hang on, you’re gonna make it!

If you’re a listener to the podcast or follow me on the socials, I bet there’s been at least one time this year that you thought: “I wish I could be at the beach!”

So in the spirit of helping you “reach the beach” and ending this year with a positive vibe, I thought it would be a wonderful idea to have a conversation with somebody who specializes in just that. I put out the call to my conscious business peeps at Shift/Co, and my new friend Judianne Dunlap - who just happens to be a luxury vacation “concierge” - was the first to say “I love everything about the beach - I’m in!”

I know, I know, you’re thinking luxury beach vacation? Sounds expensive. I’ll admit, I was thinking the same thing. However, as soon as Judi and I began talking, the words “luxury beach vacation” took on a completely different meaning.

So grab a refreshing drink, relax in your comfy virtual beach chair, and let Judi take YOU to the beach!

Hey Beach Lovers!

Life is crazy right now – and not “crazy good” as I like to say. It's the kind that completely uproots everything you know and turns it inside out kind of crazy.

It's like a movie with wayyyy too many plot twists.

As if a pandemic and complete economic nightmare wasn’t enough, throw in an earthquake or two, some giant murder hornets (what the what?) and now, unspeakable murders by the police, peaceful citizen protests threatened with tear gas and military force, and Bible brandishing (ok, that was just strange).

But you know what?  The Beach says: "It’s gonna be OK. We’re gonna be OK."

I have to admit though, sometimes the Beach speaks, and I’m not so sure I like the message. That's what my guest Kristen Gmerek and I were talking about, recently. She's a beach girl, too – feeling "all the feels" associated with the tides. As we were half lamenting and half laughing about the messages we were receiving, I said, “You know, this is good  – let’s record it!  And so we did.

A few months ago Sheri and I met atop the Casa Marina Hotel - an iconic Jacksonville Beach venue overlooking the Ocean.

I wanted her input about some about projects and events I wanted to create, because, if you have an idea, Sheri knows the who, what, where and how to make it happen.

As we talked about conscious community, taking care of our fellow human beings and the planet, and where I wanted to take The Beach Speaks going forward, I knew she would be the perfect guest for this re-launch of the podcast.

Then, along came a virus. . .

While my primary intent was to talk about conscious community during a pandemic, we let the conversation flow and ended up talking about a variety of subjects:

  • What it was like growing up at the beach
  • The importance of paying yourself if you’re a stay-at home mom
  • Finding balance and happiness in the times when you feel most uncomfortable
  • Why it's ok to feel sore after doing Tai Chi
  • Vision boarding
  • The importance of creating a sustainable and simple lifestyle

Like Sheri says: “Happy Healthy Planet, Happy Healthy Life”

Beach Lovers! it’s the last day of January 2020!!

How are your intentions holding up?

Relax…you still have 11 more months to manifest your dreams!

Speaking of dreams, if you’re a Mental health professional, you might not have the opportunity to be on the Oprah show or any other large media platform - yet. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t realize your dream of making an impact - now.

INTAKE TV is an online talk show that provides professionals in the helping field with a platform for open and honest discussions about today’s most pressing mental health topics:

It’s The Mental Health Show that’s Taking Mental Health Issues to Another Level - shining a light on the “unspoken societal and cultural norms and stigmas” that are having a profound affect on the human psyche.

INTAKE TV strives to de-stigmatize mental illnesses in a professional, creative, and entertaining way.

In today’s episode I speak with Bertha Freeman-Barrett, Creator, Host, Executive Producer of INTAKE, and co-host Jules Jean-Pierre.

Bertha is a Registered Mental Health Counseling Intern and also a certified trauma professional who assists survivors or victims of recent, or past trauma. She is a firm advocate against domestic violence and passionate about educating, empowering, and assisting clients and individuals to live their best life.

Jules is a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern who works with individuals and families dealing with addiction - assisting them in transitioning to their new desired life goals. She is also a certified trauma professional who helps individuals work through recent or past trauma, self-esteem issues, anxiety, and relationship and parenting issues.

You know, I thought I knew a fair amount about therapy - but what I didn’t know was how much of a stigma there is about it - especially with “people of color” - I’m so grateful for what these women bring to the table and their willingness to open up and really “go there” - I learned a lot.

If YOU want to know more about the show and how to connect - visit their website: intake.tv - and watch it out on YouTube: Intake Talk Show.

Ok, Conscious Community - it’s time to take the stigma out of mental health!

Hey Beach lovers! it’s mid December here - just a few weeks before Christmas, and then we’ll be ushering in a New Year – a new decade!!

So, in the middle of all the holiday hustle, why don’t you and I take a break and talk about DEATH.

I know, I know, this sounds like a morbid subject and why would anyone want to talk about DEATH? Especially during the holidays!

Trust me, I wasn’t too sure about this myself; however, after talking with Nada Frazier, a Death Doula (yes, there is such a thing) I realized this is a conversation we need to be having - especially since this is the time of year when we’re focused on family and friends, and thinking about how we want to live our best life going forward into the New Year.

As strange as it might seem, living our best life includes talking about and preparing for. . .our death.

In this episode, Nada and I talk about:

The stigma around death and how we define it, our fears about the end of life and our reluctance to talk about it, our personal end of life stories and how to prepare for and have a conversation around end of life issues.

Nada explains what a Death Doula does - and doesn’t do - and helps re-frame the idea that preparing for our death isn’t something to be afraid of. . .

It’s one of the greatest gifts we can give our loved ones.

About Nada Frazier:

Nada is a non-denominational ordained minister and has served as Spiritual Leader of Unity of Jacksonville Beach (www.unityofjacksonvillebeach) since 2015. She is a sacred servant, inspirational speaker, writer, award winning photographer, reiki master teacher, and hospice spiritual care volunteer.

Nada founded and continues to facilitate "Sundays 8 @ 8" prayer circle where each Sunday at 8 p.m. for 8 minutes, people from across the globe quietly step away from their usual activities to come together in prayer. She is also the founder of The Sacred Servant (www.thesacredservant.com) where she serves as an End-of-Life Doula, Guide, Mentor, Trainer, Consultant and Community Educator.

Nada is a Certified End-of-Life Doula, Advanced Mentorship, through Quality of Life Care and serves as a Board Member of the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance (NEDA) (www.NEDAlliance.com) and Chair of NEDA’s Newsletter Committee. In additon, Nada founded and facilitates The Death Café of Northeast Florida (deathcafe.com)

She has over 30 years of experience working as a paralegal, holds a B.A. in Communication, with a minor in Women’s Gender Studies from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and is currently enrolled in Saint Leo University's MSW program.

Nada enjoys her family, meditation, writing, nature photography, and never met a tree or rock she didn’t love.

My guest today is Owyn Porter, of The Happy Sea,

A FEEL GOOD, TROPICAL BRAND MEANT FOR THE OCEAN LOVING, ADVENTURE SEEKING, BAREFOOT RUNNING WANDERERS.

In actuality, The Happy Sea is not just a brand – it’s a lifestyle.

And it all started on a complete whim by Owyn and her mother Laurie Moffitt in the little town of Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Owyn has always loved the ocean. Her first word as a baby was "beach." By the time she was 4 years old she was determined that when she grew up she would be a marine biologist and study the whales.

Years later with the same determination she had at 4 years old, she enrolled at Florida Atlantic University and discovered by the end of her freshman year that Marine Biology was not going to work out. Let’s just say, Math and Chemistry were not her forte. After numerous hours crying hysterically on the phone with her mother, trying to figure out what to do, Owyn decided to change her major to Art and in 2015 – at the ripe age of 19 - The Happy Sea was created.

It started out as a selection of greeting cards, then within a few short months it grew into apparel and the ever popular- stickers. All the designs are Owyn’s creation, and sustainability is a key pillar of the brand. All the products are made in the USA, produced as green as possible, and the paper she uses is FSC certified meaning that for every tree used, another one is planted in its place.

And. . .best of all, The Happy Sea donates a portion of all the proceeds to ocean conservation non profits such as Orca Conservancy and Sea to Shore.

This was Owyn’s first time as a podcast guest and. . . the first Millennial I’ve had on the show! You’re going to love her story, and what her generation is doing to create conscious community. In this episode, The Happy Sea is speaking, and The Beach Speaks is listening.

Hey Beach Lovers - my conscious community peeps!

I just wanted to let you know that I’m so grateful for you! Even though I could sit in front of a microphone and record conversations All. Day. Long. it just doesn’t work if there’s no one there to listen!

Friends, this is more than just me talking and you listening.

It’s a collaboration.

That’s why I asked my dear friend Ramona, founder of Authentic Life Journey, to share with you today - because,we’re all about collaboration - conscious collaboration - to be specific.

What is conscious collaboration and why does it matter?

When you hear Ramona’s story, I think you’ll figure it out; and you’ll understand why we believe conscious collaboration is invaluable

If you want to make YOUR VISION a reality.

Authentic Life Journey (ALJ) was created by Ramona Crabtree-Falkner who began her wellness career with massage therapy, but this was simply a gateway to a deeper understanding of how to help others. As a massage therapist for 15 years she found a desire to explore other modalities to hold space for her clients to find more ease and healing from within. Through her own struggles with health and stress induced chronic pain she turned to yoga, meditation, energy work and life coaching to connect to her own healing and found through each of these explorations more ease and peace in life.

Finding these practices to be of great benefit to her life with a strong vision to help others, Ramona developed the Authentic Life Journey programs and has now found a path that truly speaks to her truths of wanting to help others grow, heal and find ease and peace.

Authentic Life Journey offers Group Life Coaching, Private Life Coaching, 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training, Group Yoga, Private Yoga, Reiki, Crystal Bowls Meditations, Workshops and Retreats. Your experience with the Authentic Life Journey Team will leave you feeling peaceful and open to the journey that is life!

What do Mother Theresa, sex trafficking and Southwest Airlines have in common? Well, in this conversation with Kristin Keen, founder of Rethreaded, you’re about to find out.

I discovered Rethreaded a year ago at a “Local Influencers” pop-up closet event – kind of like a yard sale – but in a beautifully lit hotel ballroom, complete with champagne and delicate hors d’oeuvres. It was a place to see and be seen.

While I was browsing through racks of “gently used” trendy clothes (beautiful, but nothing that I would wear) I noticed a small display tucked away in the corner of the ballroom: simple yet brightly colored infinity scarves made from discarded t-shirts and handmade leather bracelets crafted from airplane seat covers.

Yeah, this was something more my style, and when I heard they were all created and sold by survivors of sex trafficking - wow - I couldn’t open my wallet fast enough!

As the woman at the booth - a survivor herself - proudly wrapped my purchase in a brown paper gift bag, she told me how, Rethreaded transforms women who basically feel like a useless and discarded piece of clothing into empowered women of worth.

You know how I love stories, and how eager I am to share – however, I’ll let Kristin tell us this one.

Rethreaded exists to renew hope, reignite dreams and release potential for survivors of human trafficking through business. It’s a story of purpose, empowerment and healing, and it’s reallygood one. . .For more information and how you can help, check out their website:www.rethreaded.com

We have a problem - a big problem - and let’s face it, we’re at a point where we have to talk. Because, it’s getting personal. . .

And what affects one of us, affects us all.

It’s time that we have a talk about awareness of and access to mental healthcare.

Rather than trying to wrap my brain cells around this subject all on my own, I needed professional advice - someone who is on the front lines, caring for our mental health every day.

So, I called on the two most experienced and compassionate mental health practitioners I know, Margaret Parnell and Amy McLaughlin, to shed some light on the status of mental health care, from their point of view, and inform me about a treatment alternative that is becoming increasingly popular: Telepsychiatry.

“There’s not enough services now, and it’s about to get worse,” says Margaret. “In the next 6 years 50% of psychiatrists are set to retire. . .and there’s not enough going into psychiatry right now to replace them. . .so one of the really important things about Telepsychiatry, in general, is being able to provide services more broadly to more people.”

In today’s episode, Margaret, Amy and I explore:

  • What a healthy community looks like
  • How and why they chose a profession in psychiatric services
  • The current state of mental health care
  • New forms of treatment that make getting the care we need affordable and accessible.

Because, let’s face it - we could ALL use a little help once in a while.

Hey there my fabulous beach lovers!

What does a highly skilled Navy pilot do when her mission comes to a sudden dramatic end?

Well, as any pilot would do - she maps out a new flight plan, makes a few course corrections, and then, sets her sight on a NEW mission!

Today’s episode is the story of Kathryn Thomas, navy pilot, veteran trauma survivor, and founder of Yoga 4 Change. When I first heard someone mention Yoga 4 Change, I thought, “I’m not really sure what it’s about but it sounds like a great topic for the podcast!”

And, like so many things that happen in my life, synchronicity lead me - 8 months later - to sitting across the kitchen table with Kathryn, listening to her tell her story and feeling like

She was telling MINE.

Yoga 4 Change, top winner of One Spark 2015 in the social good category, is a non-profit, creating meaningful change for veterans, incarcerated individuals, at-hope youth (at-HOPE - Love that!) and those recovering from substance use.

Its purpose-driven yoga program heals and empowers these under-served populations, creating healthier, safer communities. One class at a time.

Listen in as Kathryn describes what it was like navigating through the battlefield of trauma in order to clear the path for others to make a precision landing ontheirpersonal airfield of change.

This is a story of a successful young actor named Gaya Kouba, living in Los Angeles:

Thriving(or so she thought) while severely sleep deprived

Successfulin her craft, while innocently developing a serious addiction

Driven by a naturally energetic mind and a “work hard no matter what” ethos,  while getting closer and closer to a life threatening crash

That was a decade ago – what about now?

I first met Gaya (now a corporate HR professional) a little over a year ago at our Toastmasters Club in Orlando.

Then, I moved to the beach.

And, not too long after, she ended up moving to the beach, too.

When she reached out to me about telling her story on the podcast, I knew it was meant to be:

Her story resonated with me on every level –  work stress, addiction/recovery, mental health AND the desperate search for something, anything, for relief.

Perhaps YOU are facing similar issues – and if not , I bet you know someone who is.

Even if you recognize there’s is a problem, you probably talking about it publicly - but Gaya  is. She looks for every opportunity to tell her story.

Because, by telling our story, not only do we help others heal,
We heal ourselves.

I thought it would just be a “hobby,” Anne Marie Moquin told me. She didn’t realize, at the time, her "hobby" would become a mission!

A mission to create awareness about the waste that we produce and how it affects our oceans & environment. Now,Beaches Go Green’s mission has become a movement!

Here’s how it all started:

In June 2019, a group of local beach friends watched a documentary called A Plastic Ocean created by the Plastic Oceans Foundation – and they were shocked. Sure, they heard about the Great Pacific garbage patch but quickly learned, there’s so much more to it. Did you know? Scientists predict that by 2050 there will be me more plastic than fish in the Ocean!

Why wasn’tsomebody talking about the dangers of plastic in our environment? Why wasn’tsomeonetalking about how wasteful & dangerous single-use plastics were? Why wasn’t someone advocating for the animals?

Why wasn’tsomebody doing something about it?

Then they realized. . .

THEY were the SOMEBODY

...and one more thing:

Even if you are a die hard recycling fan - you might be recycling wrong (!) and Anne Marie is happy to set us straight.

PS: WATCH YOUR BUTTS! The day after we recorded , the press release about cigarette butt collection came out. Here’s the link: BEACHES GO GREEN COMBATS CIGARETTE BUTT LITTER:

Hey beach lovers! Here we are again - it’s episode 5 of the show and my first podcast guest, Rachael Todd, is back!   This time, she has her "bestie" Jade Sirignano with her.

When they asked me over for tea to pick my brain about the ins and outs of podcasting, I expected just an informal chat about my experienced so far.

Little did I know, they had - what I think - is a fabulous idea for a podcast…of their own!

And they had a LOT of questions.

So, When I opened up my “bag of tricks” – meaning, my recording equipment – to show them what I use, before the first question even came out, they said,“Let’s record this!”

Leave it to these two to have what I call the vision beyond the vision – and believe me - they make things happen!

And for me:  well, there’s nothing like showing up for tea - and leaving with a podcast!

I first met Dennis and Kathy Lang at their full moon yoga class here in Jacksonville Beach and, let me tell you, whether you’re a novice or an experienced yoga practitioner, you will walk away from the experience feeling relaxed, more aware of the mind/body connection, and perhaps inspired – maybe even a little enlightened! After that class, I said: “ I have to have them on the podcast!”

While Dennis and Kathy do teach yoga here at The Beaches, they travel the world , leading yoga/meditation retreats and workshops. You can also find many of their guided meditations and music on the popular meditation app: Insight Timer (which I use almost daily).

But it wasn’t always like this for Dennis and Kathy, and they felt compelled to write about their experience in their book titled: Everything Matters. It’s a story of two driven corporate high climbers who had it all, yet still felt unfulfilled and out of balance. What turned their lives around and led them to newfound health, joy, and careers was completely unexpected - and is available to anyone.

You might be thinking “ Ok, yeah, so they teach yoga – what does that have to do with me?”

It’s my hope that by the time you finish listening to his episode, you’ll know.

Everything Matters!

I have many podcast heroes - one of which is Jonathan Fields, creator and host of The Good Life Project. Prior to recording this episode, I was reading one of his recent blog posts about The Talking Heads’ iconic song “Once in a Lifetime.” I loved the message and thought I’d share it with you.

When Jonathan posed the question: “What if we took ownership of our past…Learned from where we’ve been. Then, closed the books on what got us here…to plot a different course forward?” It got me thinking...

I began to ponder the question that seems to be on everyone’s mind these days: “What is my passion?” While the path to passion is unique to each one of us, I wanted to share some of my ideas.

In this episode, I talk with my good friend Jim Kupczyk, creator and founder of Mindful Market – which is essentially the world’s first on-line marketplace dedicated to serving heart-centered business and creating total well-being - it’s the very essence of “Conscious Commerce.

I don’t know of anyone better than Jim to explain to us what creating conscious community and supporting heart-centered business owners really means. He knows - the blood sweat and tears, finances on a shoestring, keeping momentum with very little sleep - all in the name of service.

With just a simple idea to help better his own health and fitness, coupled with a deep desire to be of service to others, Jim started on his quest to build a one-of-a kind on-line marketplace - and let me tell you – Mindful Market is a game changer

Hello! Welcome to the first episode of The Beach Speaks. I’m so excited that you chose to tune in. I wanted to make it a special one for you.

My guest is Rachael Todd, former Miss United States, Mindset Coach and Founder/Creator of The Balanced Mind Movement, and, can I say - I really love this woman!

I first met Rachael at one of her balanced mind yoga/meditation workshops. I was new to the Beach and looking to connect with some like-minded women, and I really resonated with her energy. I think once you hear her speak, you’ll know why.

As they say: “Your vibe attracts your tribe!”
