On our first So Done Sunday we feature our first middle school chapter book fiction by Paula Chase. This book about two very different African American girls caught up in a rift and learn the power of speaking up. This Chapter 1 of So Done.
Today, we start our First Generation Friday, where we feature a historical figure from the book: “First Generation: 36 Trailblazing Immigrants and Refugees Who Make America Great.” Our first story starts with Halima Aden, the first hijab wearing model to grace the cover of an American magazine. Her beauty shines inside and out in this story to start our series.
On the Third episode of The Black Apple Reads, we read No Small Potatoes. It’s my new favorite book about unsung hero Junius G. Groves and his world-famous potato farm in Kansas By Tonya Bolden and Don Tate. It truly is a gem and is the definition of the Black Enterprise.
When Angels Sing: The Story of Rock Legend Carlos Santana. When I first grabbed, this book, I thought, okay great, another biography, but I was wrong. Not only does this book feature the diversity within the Hispanic Community, but it showcases Social Justice within the timeline of Carlos Santana’s life. It’s a great book that I highly recommend you read in person simply due to the mind-blowing illustrations by Jose Ramierez.
