For this True Story Tuesday, I’d like to share a story of my conversations with women in the early 1990s. We would talk about the rights women have. They were pro-choice, I was pro-life.
When we talked about who had rights the common response to my liberal friends was, “It’s not a person; just a fetus.” That’s a hard argument to overcome.
“If the unborn child is simply a blob of flesh,” they would say, “what is the harm of removing it since it’s not life?”
My response was always the same: “What if it is life? What if it is a person?”
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 905 of the Final Season: Gained Rights > Lost Rights
When slavery was abolished some slave owners were upset because they had lost rights to what they deemed as property.
As horrible as slavery is, there were slave owners who cried foul because of lost rights.
The slaves were silent until they were given rights from those who had it.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 904 of the Final Season: Value Stays the Same
In the book, The Invisible Bond by Barbara Wilson, she tells a story of a sermon illustration that shows the value of who we are regardless of what we’ve been through. I will be using it when I speak to students across the country this year.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 903 of the Final Season: Sometimes and Lately
More from the book, Authentic Happiness by Martin Seligman. He writes, if you look at bad events as “always” and “never” you have a permanent pessimistic style. If you think in terms of “sometimes” and “lately” you have an optimistic style.
What I like about this is that “sometimes” and “lately” has a
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 902 of the Final Season: Learning to Argue with Yourself
I found a lot of value in reading the book, Authentic Happiness by Martin Seligman. With the mental health problems that we are experiencing, this book provided me with ways to combat negative or doubting thoughts.
One portion, learning to argue with yourself, was especially helpful. Martin writes, there are four important ways to dispute a negative belief about yourself:
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 901 of the Final Season: TST – GET UP!
A few weeks ago, I needed to grab some items at the grocery store. It was my son, Colt, and me, and we were in a hurry to get the items we needed. As I weaved through the aisle like a young Russell Wilson weaved through the people at the mall, I came across a slow walker. You know the type right? They don’t know exactly what they want so they aimlessly gaze at the shelf hoping what they want will jump out at them. Most slow walkers don’t walk in a straight line either.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 900 of the Final Season: What’s Your GGO?
Often when I’m coaching someone, I’ll ask them, what’s your greatest opportunity for growth. More times than not, they don’t have an answer. It’s not top of mind to think about where they need to grow.
What about you? What’s your Greatest Growth Opportunity? I call it the GGO.
The GGO is the area of growth in your life that will yield the highest return. The areas of life are obvious, if you’ve read my book, You Got It; Now Go Get It, it’s the S.P.I.E.F. – Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Financial.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 899 of the Final Season: Problem Solving Styles
Final thoughts from the book Quiet, written by Susan Cain about the different problem-solving styles between extroverts and introverts.
We know about dopamine. It is the reward chemical released in response to anticipated pleasure.
The pathways that release dopamine seem to be more active in extroverts. In short, introverts don’t “buzz” easily. Getting a “buzz” can be risky so extroverts would be wise if they listened to introverts more.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 898 of the Final Season: Why Group Brainstorming Fails
More from the book Quiet, written by Susan Cain about the ineffectiveness of brainstorming. I’ve always thought brainstorming was a necessary part of team building yet as Susan reveals in her book, there can be some downsides according to some Psychologists.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 897 of the Final Season: The Power of Working Alone
I finished the book, Quiet, by Susan Cain and found it quite informative. It revealed the importance introverts, or those of us that are shy or quiet, can have in a work setting. Something that really jumped out at me was a quote from Steve Wozniak.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 896 of the Final Season: Epic Speaking Fail
In 2014, I was approached by someone about being a speaker for a large Business Intelligence conference. He liked my style and wanted me to consider joining their team.
I’m confident in my speaking abilities and have always thought of myself as a great speaker. Not on this subject though. I knew enough about Business Intelligence to have a conversation. Speak on it? Um, no, not really.
His counterpoint was a good one. The speakers that really “know” BI are putting our audiences to sleep. We need some fresh speakers to communicate the message we want to communicate.
Then he told me what it paid.
Done. I was sold.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 895 of the Final Season: The Idiot Pastor
He is a pastor of a church in Texas. And he is an idiot.
The definition of idiot is a stupid person or a person of low intelligence.
The definition of stupid is having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense.
It’s pride month and for this year’s pride month a pastor thought it would be a good idea to give a sermon titled, “Why We Won’t Shut Up,” and in it he said, “these people should be put to death . . . they should be sentenced to death, lined up against the wall and shot in the back of the head. That’s what God teaches.”
This man is an idiot.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 894 of the Final Season: The Chicken and the Pig
Chicken and the Pig are walking down the street
They pass a restaurant which causes the Chicken to ask the Pig a question,
“Pig,” the Chicken said, “let’s start a restaurant.”
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 893 of the Final Season: Share Ideas Regardless of Results or Accolades
One of the things I point out in my coaching sessions is the importance of sharing ideas instead of complaining about a situation. Often, we have our head down working instead of observing our surrounds to allow for generating an idea.
I believe ideas need to come in all shapes and sizes. The more ideas you offer, the better you’ll get at coming up with ideas. You can offer good ideas, bad ideas, big ideas, small ideas, funny ideas, smart ideas, keep all of them coming.
There are two problems I see with lack of idea generation within a group of people. The first is . . .
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 892 of the Final Season: No Strings Attached
The more I coach people, the more I observe how much value we put into what other people think about us. More than the number of likes, comments, and reshares of social media, this can hurt our mindset and negatively impact our interpersonal relationships.
Here’s an example of a conversation in one of my sessions.
“They don’t like me,” he said.
“How do you know?” I asked.
“Because I can tell.”
“How can you tell?” I was genuinely curious to know how he knew.
“When I say good morning, they don’t say good morning back.” He responded confidently.
“Why do you say good morning?” I asked . . .
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 891 of the Final Season: The Judge Was in a Bad Mood
TST = True Story Tuesday where I share a true story from my life that can be applied to situations you may be in.
So much had happened since I’d been married. It was the summer of 2004 when I realized I couldn’t keep moving forward with band aspirations. We had parents for only a year and Lindsay, my wife, wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. Our debt was close to $100k and most of it resulted in poor decisions while managing Salt the Band TJR:’s pursuit of being signed by a major record label.
I’ll never forget, sitting in a nice restaurant with Lindsay presenting my case of why we needed to file for bankruptcy. She was crushed. Since it was in a public place, she had to remain composed. I had already justified it in my mind and made an insensitive comment that I’m only 15 more away from tying Walt Disney (I still believe that however my timing was off).
We agreed not to tell her dad and filed the paperwork. As we sat in the courtroom . . .
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 890 of the Final Season: Stay Humble
The late John Stott said, “pride is your enemy, humility is your greatest friend.” Let’s look at the definition for both PRIDE and HUMILITY.
PRIDE: a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements
HUMILITY: a modest or low view of one's own importance; humbleness.
Like kindness, humility isn’t weak. In fact, you must have an incredible amount of strength to be humble.
Regardless of where we are at in our personal, professional, or spiritual journey, we can always grow. Having a modest or low view of our own importance will push us to continue growing. The moment we start feeling deep pleasure or satisfaction about our own achievements we are in danger of not growing.
So, when you accomplish something, be proud of your work yet only for a moment. Then get back to what will take you to the highest of heights in this journey called life: humility.
Stay humble my friends.

The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 861 of the Final Season - Priority and Plan
This year I was ready to write, produce, and film my movie "So Happy Inside." We are embarking on May of 2022 so why haven't I done it yet? The reason I haven't done it yet is because it isn't the fastest way to fulfilling the plan that has been set before me.
When you realize the plan that is set before you, you can prioritize your actions properly which will result in a feeling of fulfillment. Feelings of fulfillment is an empowering feeling because you know you are doing what you were born to do.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 860 of the Final Season: WE WON!
Last night we won our first basketball game and I didn't coach them to victory. You see it was the last game of the season, we hadn't won a game yet, and winning or losing last night didn't impact our seeding in the play in game. So I told my assistant coach that he would be the head coach for the game. I would be his assistant.
He coached the team to victory. :)
Humbling? Yes. However the feeling of watching someone else be successful with your program is something that is second to none. Try it. Give someone the opportunity to do what you do.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 859 of the Final Season - How You Treat Others Matter
Last night the Atlanta Hawks were eliminated from the playoffs by the Miami Heat. Hawks star Trae Young struggled once again. As I watched I noticed he and his teammates weren't getting the calls the Miami Heat were. Fouls to the head and shoulder area weren't called yet when Miami drove to the hoop they were getting calls for the same action.
In my opinion this goes back to how officials treat players based on how players treat the officials. Trae Young chirps at the officials on the court and they don't give him the calls they would another star. Coincidence? I think not.
It's time we all wake up and realize that how you treat others matters.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 858 of The Final Season - Deciding What NOT to Do
There was one thing that stood out to me after reading the book, Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. Yes; only one thing and it was a good one. Jobs knew how to focus. Deciding what NOT to do is as important as deciding what to do.
Let that sink in my peoples.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 857 of the Final Season: Losing Time
I started watching the show "Winning Time" on HBO Max yesterday. It. Was. Disgusting. How Hollywood thinks we like to watch that smut is beyond me. The writing is choppy. The editing is clunky and the people they are portraying weren't like the way the show is portraying them. Big thumbs down for me.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 856 of the Final Season: Don’t Take the Shortcut on the Hike
The one big thing that I put down as something to do this year was take a hike. Last week was spring break and we went to Mt. Charleston National Park to do just that. Round trip it was a 3.8 mile hike with an elevation climb of a little over one-thousand feet. I can’t recall the elevation of where we were at just that we climbed more than one-thousand feet in elevation.
As we got closer to the side of the mountain there were signs that read, “don’t take the shortcut.” When I read the sign I didn’t fully understand until I started to see how the path zig zagged. My oldest son took the bait and immediately crossed between the lower portion of the path and the higher one. I told him not to do it again and he asked why?
(Story continues . . .)
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 855 of the Final Season: Develop the Habit of Non-Finishing
One of the most interesting books I have ever read is the 4 Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss. It’s not the best, not the worst, just interesting. The book reveals the importance of being extremely diligent with your time. To base what you do on the results and not what other people may expect of you – even your boss. Crazy right?
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 854 of the Final Season: Catch Them Doing Something Right
I don’t know if Dave Ramsey actually uses the phrase, “catch them doing something right,” however he gives a lot of insight into how to do that in his book, Entreleader.
We as leaders can sometimes focus on catching someone doing something wrong more than catching them doing something right. Here is what I found valuable in Dave’s book that can help leaders of all stages catch their followers doing something right.

The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 846 of the Final Season: Walk a Mile in My Shoes???
I love the ‘walk a mile in their shoes’ teaching opportunity when developing leaders. It’s a fantastic lesson of understanding someone else’s perspective and a way to develop empathy.
Belief is the phrase was derived from an 1895 poem written by Mary T. Lathrap titled Judge Softly, later titled Walk a Mile in His Moccasins. It was a reference to showing kindness to the Native Americans that were here before us.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 845 of the Final Season: Five Enemies of Unity
Another reference to the book, EntreLeadership by Dave Ramsey. In it he wrote about the five enemies to unity within a team.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 844 of the Final Season: The Proper Reprimand
In the book, EntreLeadership, author Dave Ramsey describes the value of using entrepreneurial skills in your leadership style. One of the things I really liked out of the book is his advice on a proper reprimand.
Having to reprimand someone can be difficult for us. We take our time to think about how we are going to do it and it results in being an awkward experience for everyone involved.
Here is what Dave Ramsey suggests:
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 843 of the Final Season: How to Get Out of a Funk
As many of you know, I help develop leaders who develop leaders and during one of my weekly coaching calls, a leader asked me a question: “how do I get out of a funk?”
I asked this leader if I told them would they follow the instruction I would give. They said, “yes.” I asked again to make sure, and they again said, “yes, they were ready to follow my instruction.”
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 842 of the Final Season: So Slapp’n Ridiculous
On Sunday, March 27 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Smith’s bald look. Will Smith thought it was funny until he didn’t think it was funny and walked on stage to slap Chris Rock for making the comment.
Today I share my thoughts on the subject.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 841 of the Final Season: Fearful Leading
As a leader, do you lead your team out of fear? Here is what I mean by this, is there something you want to do with your team that you aren’t doing for fear of their backlash? Or perhaps some of them may even quit.
That can get tricky. What I would encourage you on is to believe in your vision and lead from a position of strength and confidence in your vision.
I have the privilege to coach leaders at a company and sometimes reminding them of their role and authority helps them stand firm in their original thought. This isn’t about ignoring feedback from your team; on the contrary; this is about knowing the needs of the team and staying true to the originally established vision.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 840 of the Final Season: It’s Happening
It's
Happening
Two common words that make an extraordinary phrase.
Leaders have vision. Visions are meant to be shared so those around you can choose to follow your vision or go a different path.
Once your vision is clear, go through the proper steps to establish your goals and strategic plan. Execute the plan with actionable tasks done on a daily basis.
And all throughout this glorious journey say the phrase: "It's Happening!"

The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 830 of the Final Season: Four Stages of Leading
Yesterday we discussed the four stages of learning from the book, Servant Leadership in Action by Ken Blanchard and Renee Broadwell. The book is a collection of writings from well known authors, and I don’t know who the source of the four stages of learning is, however, the same person gave insight on how leaders are to enable this type of transition.
Leadership styles need to evolve from:
We will share more from this book as the final season continues next week, next month, next quarter.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 830 of the Final Season: Four Stages of Learning
In the book, Servant Leadership in Action by Ken Blanchard and Renee Broadwell, they write about the four stages of learning. I’ve been toying around with the idea of a learning spectrum where it goes from learning to understanding to fully understanding. So when I read this in the book it really stood out.
The book is a collection of writings from well known authors. I don’t know who the source of the four stages of learning is, however, still wanted to share:

The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 824 of the Final Season: The Good Apple

Jonathan is the good apple and unlike fruits in a barrel, we humans can act as good apples to inspire change in a positive way.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 823 of the Final Season: The Bad Apple
Today’s podcast I’m going to read an excerpt from the book, The Culture Code by Daniel Coyle.
[after reading]
The term “bad apple rots the bunch” comes because once an apple is rotten or has physical damage, (ie a bruise), it produces ethylene, which in turn leads to a slightly increased internal temperature causing a breakdown of chlorophyll and the synthesis of other pigments. Once this happens, it starts a chain reaction, stimulating the process in other apples.
The same can be applied when one bad person is put in a team setting – how can you combat this? We’ll learn tomorrow.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 822 of the Final Season: They Don’t Believe You
I work with high and middle school students and often they tell me adults don’t believe them. In some cases, the student has done a bad thing yesterday and now made up their mind that today, and tomorrow, they have changed.
This statement of their truth can sometimes come with an apology. It’s at that time that I tell them, “Don’t apologize. Show me the change through your behavior.” Changing behavior can be an extremely difficult task, especially without a compelling event.
When experiencing change there are two drivers that spark the change: fear of loss or desire for gain. Most of the time it is the fear of loss that results in lasting change.
If you are in a situation where they don’t believe you, stop talking and start changing by using whatever compelling event you can find that results in a loss.

We are still spitt'n fire from the book, The Fred Factor, written by Mark Sanborn. In Mark’s book, he describes his postal worker named Fred. Fred showed an extreme level of kindness that impacted Mark to do the same.
Here are the seven “B’s” of relationship building that Mark reveals to us:
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 815 of the Final Season: How to Develop Others
Yesterday we talked about how we can inspire others. Today we are going to learn about how to develop others from the book, The Fred Factor, by Mark Sanborn. The book is about a postal worker named Fred who impacted Mark’s life through kindness. Mark then writes about how we can identify Fred’s in our life, become a Fred to others, and develop Fred’s. He used the name Fred to prove his point:
F – Find
R – Reward
E – Educate
D – Demonstrate
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 814 of the Final Season: To Inspire Others, Measure These
To inspire others, make sure to measure these five things about yourself.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 813 of the Final Season: Inspire Through the Ordinary
This is the first episode referencing the incredible book, The Fred Factor by Mark Sanborn. He writes about the power of inspiration through storytelling. If there is one bit of love language that I have its inspiring others through storytelling.
What I like from Mark is how important it is to keep things simple and ordinary.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 812 of the Final Season: Success is Simple
In the book, Changing Direction, Mary Miller writes something profound that I had to share. I don’t know if it’s from her directly or if she received it from someone else. She wrote, success is simple:
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 811 of the Final Season: Look the Part
In my leadership development coaching sessions, I like to point out the incredible value of losing weight. It’s one of the few things in life that a single act can inspire the person losing weight and others.
Consider the passive-aggressive world we live in. “Can’t offend anyone, so I’ll just keep to myself.” Right? That’s how we as a society live it feels like. Yet when someone loses significant weight, people aren’t afraid to say, “wow you look great! How much weight have you lost?”
Hmmm, did they think they didn’t look great prior to losing weight? Doesn’t matter, no one thinks that they just compliment the person who has lost the weight. I love it because it is a non-verbal way to show growth.
What’s another non-verbal way to show growth? Dress. To. Impress. It’s time we in the business world, especially entrepreneurs, look the part.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 810 of the Final Season: Ten Choices that Impact Your Dreams
In the book, Changing Direction, by Mary Miller, we learn about the ten choices that impact your dreams.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 809 of the Final Season: They Aren’t Getting It
Often in my leadership development sessions, the person I’m talking to will say, “I told them! They aren’t getting it.”
The reason I titled my book, You Got It was to highlight the importance of understanding something as opposed to just learning something.
When someone doesn’t “get it” they are not likely going to reveal to you that they don’t get it. Especially when you are in leadership. In leadership, your followers might nod their head in agreement and not have any idea what you want them to do.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 808 of the Final Season: Let’s Talk About Sex
I was married at the age of 29 and I was a virgin. My wife was also a virgin. Both of us are proud to say we were virgins by choice.
In an article written for The Well Clinic blog in 2020, reads: The idea that “practice makes perfect” regarding sexual intimacy is backwards. Researchers found that those who wait to have sex until marriage, compared to those who don’t, report significantly higher relationship satisfaction (20%), better communication patterns (12%), less consideration of divorce (22%), and better sexual quality (15%).
If you aren’t married and have already had sex, simply stop now, and wait. You’ll be grateful you did.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 807 of the Final Season: The Value of Facebook
In 2020, I reduced my Facebook friends from the 1400 hundreds to the 200 hundreds. I was done with how fake people were on Facebook. I called it “fakebook.”
This year I wanted to do something special for my wife on Valentines Day. My finances have started to pick up and she has been through a lot over the past two years since being laid off due to COVID.
What could I give her? She is not really into jewelry, and I had given technology gifts for the past few years.
Then it hit me! A Shiba Inu puppy! Our Shiba passed away in 2018 and Lindsay had expressed her desire to have a Shiba companion again.
Meet Michiko.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 806 of the Final Season: Life is Too Short
I read this in a book yesterday that I just had to share.
“Life is too short to hate what you do all day.” For fun I looked up “life is too short” on Dictionary dot com. It described the life is too short phrase this way:
Do not waste time on unimportant matters or unworthy emotions, such as anger or anxiety. For example, I could get my revenge by snubbing Tom, but life's too short, or don’t spend all day waiting for his call—life is too short. This phrase, possibly echoing the ancient Latin proverb, meaning Art is long-lasting, life is short
Life is too short is often used to dismiss an unimportant or unworthy concern.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 805 of the Final Season: Let Me Be Real With You
When was the last time you heard someone say, “let me be real with you” or “I’m going to be real right now,” and it was followed by a positive thought?
I have never had someone tell me something positive after saying the words, “let me be real with you.”
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 804 of the Final Season: Are Cliques Really Bad?
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a clique as a narrow exclusive circle or group of persons especially one held together by common interests, views, or purposes.
Now Google dictionary takes it a different direction and defines a clique as a small group of people with shared interest or other features in common who spend time together and do not readily allow others to join them.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 803 of the Final Season: Do the “Right” Thing?
I read in a book recently that an owner of a restaurant was the first restaurant to do away with plastic straws in his restaurant. He bragged about his being first and now many others have followed their example. What he said is what jumped out at me: We did the right thing.
According to the Google Dictionary, the definition of “right” is:
Does that mean the other restaurants with plastic straws are doing something, “wrong?”
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 802 of the Final Season: Overcoming Limited Beliefs
Author Curly Martin points out the importance of self-talk in his book, The Life Coaching. He wrote: Your self-image is created by you within a closed loop of your belief system:
To break free from this repeating cycle, list out your limiting beliefs, ie: “I’m bad at remembering names.”
Change limiting belief to the opposite view: “I’m great at remembering names.”

The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 796 of The Final Season: The Ten Great Stories Leaders Tell (Part 2)
One of the top five books read in 2021 was The Ten Stories Great Leaders Tell by Paul Smith. This is part two of a two-part micro-series revealing what the ten great stories are. Yesterday, we revealed the first five:
The remaining five are:
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 795 of The Final Season: The Ten Great Stories Leaders Tell (Part 1)
One of the top five books read in 2021 was The Ten Stories Great Leaders Tell by Paul Smith. This is part one of a two-part micro-series revealing what the ten great stories are:
Story 1 – A founding story Story 2 – A case-for-change story Story 3 – A vision story Story 4 – A strategy story Story 5 – A corporate-values story
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 794 of The Final Season: We are a Team (not Family)
How many of you work for a company that feels like a family? I read an interesting thought recently from a book that described the difference of a team mentality instead of a family mentality (sorry – forgot which book).
When you work for a company, you are employed under the premise that you are going to accomplish certain tasks in exchange for financial compensation. At any time, you could quit or they could fire you. You won’t “quit” on a family (well, you aren’t supposed to) and a family won’t fire you. Because you are family. A family is defined as a group of one or more parents and their children living as a unit.
A team, on the other hand, is different from a family.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 793 of The Final Season: The Millionaire Mindset
I read a book last year titled, Change Your Mindset, by Cassandra Gaisford. We talked about having a “they can’t guard me” mindset yesterday and Cassandra describes a “millionaire mindset” in her book. She writes, When it comes down to it, success flows from the habits, attitudes and behaviors you use every day that move you, step-by-step, towards millionaire status. And yes, sometimes even the rich go belly up, but something they never lose is their millionaire mindset.”
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 792 of The Final Season: They Can’t Guard Me Mindset
What area in your life do you look at an inferior opponent and play to the best of your ability? You may think you play better because of the lack of resistance from the opponent where I would say it’s not the lack of resistance from the opponent as much as it is your mindset. Your mindset of “they can’t guard me” is more powerful than the lack of skills from the opponent. Believe in yourself and make a commitment to the “they can’t guard me” mindset.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 791 of the Final Season: 2021 Book Review #1 - Bait of Satan
The Bait of Satan was written by John Bevere and was hands down the best book I read in 2021. The way that I determine best for me is how much the book impacted my life and caused me to change my way of thinking or behaving.
As someone who was raised in the church, I’ve witnessed first-hand the power of offense. Church goers would get offended by the littlest of things and it didn’t matter if the pastor intended to offend. This book lays out how important of a tool, in the devil’s tool kit, the power of offense is. The devil uses it all the time.
Being offended is like carrying a debt that only forgiveness can bring.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 790 of the Final Season: 2021 Book Review #2 - Holy Bible
For the first time, in a long time, I read the Holy Bible from start to finish. I had forgotten how great the stories are in the Old Testament. Stories of a young human species finding their way through decisions made by those who served the one true God and those who didn’t.
Regardless of whether or not you are religious or believe in God, check out the Holy Bible and start reading from Genesis 1. You will not be disappointed.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 789 of the Final Season: 2021 Book Review #3 - Originals
The third best book read of 2021 was “Originals” and it was written by Adam Grant. I did a podcast last year about the study of employees who download Chrome or Firefox browsers. This book is filled with many stories and studies of what type of person an original is.
Originals don’t accept the default. He writes, the hallmark of originality is rejecting the default and exploring whether a better option exists.
This can be frustrating for some leaders, however the leaders who embrace this from their followers, or even encourage it, can come across some very creative findings.
When it comes to idea generation, quantity is the most predictable path to quality. Original thinkers come up with many ideas that are strange mutations, dead ends, and utter failures.
Still – let them do that because that’s their path to fantastic ideas.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 788 of the Final Season: HeadTrash
The fourth best book read in 2021 was HeadTrash by Tish Squillaro and Timothy Thomas. This book was awesome, and they describe what the book is about so perfectly in the subtitle: Cleaning Out the Junk that Stands Between You and Success. It is a leadership book as opposed to a professional development book.
The authors describe Headtrash as a negative voice of your subconscious engaging you in a deadly inner dialogue that only you hear that affects everything you say or do.
There are seven forms of HeadTrash:
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 787 of the Final Season: The Ten Great Stories Leaders Tell
The fifth best book I read this year was written by Paul Smith and titled, The Ten Great Stories Leaders Tell.
In it he writes, if you tell your people a boring, irrelevant story, even if delivered beautifully, your audience won’t forgive you for wasting their time. In other words, WHAT stories you tell is more important than HOW you tell it.
Stories are:
I’m going to do a two-part series next week on the ten stories.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 786 of the Final Season: Our Body System – Cortisol
All week we are talking about our Body’s System based on what Simon Sinek wrote in his book, Leaders Eat Last: Our bodies employ a system of primary chemicals in our body that contribute to feelings.
These include Endorphins, Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin, and Cortisol. Today we are focusing on Cortisol.
Cortisol is another new one for me, although my wife knew about it – she is smart you know. Simon helped me out though with his description in his book, Leaders Eat Last. He wrote: Cortisol is a chemical in our body that is responsible for stress and anxiety. That “gut feeling” of danger. Spider Man’s spidey sense (Simon didn’t write that – I just like Spidey).
This chemical was intended to be short-term. Think caveman stumbling on a saber-tooth tiger. Fight or flight – ready . . . GO! Yet those of us who hate what we do or hate who we are with, release this chemical often. By releasing cortisol, you are literally combatting the good results from the other chemicals. Cortisol isn’t “bad.” It’s just meant for short term survival type results.
Our friends at the Mayo Clinic reveal that Cortisol, the primary stress hormone, increases sugars (glucose) in the bloodstream, enhances your brain's use of glucose and increases the availability of substances that repair tissues. Cortisol also curbs functions that would be nonessential or harmful in a fight-or-flight situation.
Does Healthline.com have a list for us to lower our cortisol levels? Why yes, yes they do:
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 785 of the Final Season: Our Body System –Oxytocin.
Today we are focusing on Oxytocin.
Simon Sinek wrote in his book that Oxytocin is most people’s favorite chemical. It’s the feeling of friendship, love, or deep trust. Unlike dopamine, it is a long-lasting feeling.
Medicalnewstoday.com provides fast facts on oxytocin:
How do we increase oxytocin? We go to our friends at Healthline.com who provide twelve ways to boost oxytocin:
They admit in their bottom line that Oxytocin research isn’t conclusive, and there’s still plenty for experts to discover more about it. Oxytocin, while beneficial, isn’t a cure. It can’t repair a damaged relationship, give you empathy, or help you become more trusting on its own.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 784 of the Final Season: Our Body System – Serotonin
Today we are focusing on Serotonin.
Let’s look at how Hormone.org describes Serotonin. Serotonin helps regulate your mood naturally. When your serotonin levels are at a normal level, you should feel more focused, emotionally stable, happier, and calmer.
In Leaders Eat Last, author Simon Sinek writes, Serotonin is the feeling of pride. Chemicals are released in our body when we perceive others like us or respect us.
WebMD.com reveals some interesting information about Serotonin: Serotonin acts as a neurotransmitter, a type of chemical that helps relay signals from one area of the brain to another. Although serotonin is manufactured in the brain, where it performs its primary functions, some 90% of our serotonin supply is found in the digestive tract and in blood platelets.
Continued from our readings at WebMD.com, there are many researchers who believe that an imbalance in serotonin levels may influence mood in a way that leads to depression. Possible problems include low brain cell production of serotonin, a lack of receptor sites able to receive the serotonin that is made, inability of serotonin to reach the receptor sites, or a shortage in tryptophan, the chemical from which serotonin is made. If any of these biochemical glitches occur, researchers believe it can lead to depression, as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, panic, and even excess anger.
Finally, what do our friends from Healthline.com have to offer with the seven foods that could boost your Serotonin. They list:
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 783 of the Final Season: Our Body System – Dopamine
Today we are focusing on Dopamine
Dopamine is responsible for allowing you to feel pleasure, satisfaction, and motivation. When you feel good that you have achieved something, it's because you have a surge of dopamine in the brain according to HealthDirect.com
Infoactionrecovery.com shares how dopamine drives our behavior. Dopamine levels impact mood regulation, muscle movement, sleep patterns, ability to store and recall memories, concentration, appetite, and ability to express self-control. When there is an imbalance in this chemical, a person cannot function at an optimal level.
Healthline.com lists 10 ways to increase dopamine levels naturally
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 782 of the Final Season: Our Body System – Endorphins
Today we are focusing on Endorphins.
Endorphins are the body's natural painkillers. Endorphins are released by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in response to pain or stress, this group of peptide hormones both relieves pain and creates a general feeling of well-being. (health.harvard.edu article on mind and mood).
People with low levels of endorphin may suffer from depression or fibromyalgia. Fi-bro-my-al-gi-a is a condition that causes pain all over the body. Sleep problems, fatigue, and emotional and mental distress.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 782 of the Final Season: This Year I will Share My
We continue to build momentum at the start of 2022 with sharing our talents, gifts, or skills to others for free. Kaye Ramos wrote a beautiful blog on Thrive Global titled, Seven Inspiring Reasons Why You Should Use Your Talents or Gifts. (We’ll give her a break on using the “s” word – should).
Here are her reasons:
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 781 of the Final Season: This Year I Need to Learn About/How
Ghandi is credited with this quote: “Live like you are dying tomorrow. Learn like you will live forever.”
What is it that you need to learn more about? Is it your job? Side-hustle or hobby? In my experience, people know where they need to improve. The question is, do they want to improve. I did a podcast last year asking the question, do you want to get better. Wanting to improve means you are going to sacrifice something in your life to allow the time needed to learn about or how you want to do something.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 780 of the Final Season: This Year I Want to Try
As a kid I loved watching Star Wars. In the second movie released, we watch as Yoda trains a young Luke Skywalker in the ways of a Jedi. It is there when he tells Luke, “Do or do not. There is no try.”
The definition of try is to make an attempt or effort to do something.
Notice it is before you do something.
When I found this for our New Year’s party, I thought about removing the word “try” then I reconsidered because this does apply with the thoughts and battles within your mind.
What is it that you haven’t made an attempt to do and you’ve been curious about doing so. For the moment stop thinking about the reason why you haven’t attempted it, just think about the activity.
Now write that activity down. This year I want to try (fill in the blank).
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 779 of the Final Season: Establish a Word for the Year
Some may wonder what the importance is of establishing a word for the year. For me it helps create a foundation of what my year could be. Last year, in 2021, my word for the year was trust. I was unemployed. Early in the year, there were problems in our family because of the continued stress of the pandemic. If it I didn’t have the word, TRUST, it would have been extremely difficult to overcome worry.
For me, I attach the word of the year with a passage of scripture from the Bible. As you know, I’m a religious person, however you can still find value in establishing a word for the year even if you don’t believe in God.
My word for 2022 is PREPARED and it’s paired with 2 Timothy 4:2: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience and careful instruction.
Reading that helps fulfill the word PREPARED for me. Later in that chapter it reads: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
When you establish a word for the year, you have something to hold on to. Something that will remind you and keep you focused on what you want to accomplish for the year.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 778 of the Final Season
Choose one word for you and 2022: _______________
This year I want to try: _________________
This year I need to learn about/how: ____________________
This year I will share my talent, gift, skill: __________________
This year I will accomplish: ________________
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 777: The Compliment Challenge
Last week I asked someone if they complimented their staff every day for five straight days would it improve how their staff felt. She said, "yes, I think so." I then asked if she could do it. She said, "of course." I cautioned her that it wouldn't be as easy as she may think. I then challenged her to a compliment challenge. She complimented her team for five straight days and I complimented my family for five straight days.
For the upcoming year can you start the new year with the Compliment Challenge. Compliment at least three people (the same three) every day for five straight days.
Got it? Yeah, you got it, now go get it!
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 776: The Power of New
There are those that like to poo poo on the idea of creating a New Year's Resolution. Let me ask you this, what comes first mindset or action? I'm a firm believer that action can spark mindset. Take advantage of the power of new. It's a new year! Start simple and start small. I'll even give you something to do tomorrow.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 775: Create a New Shelf!
When I first heard the line, 'ya gotta be like Coke, have originality' in a rap during my teen years, I took it to heart. Like, literally to heart. Once again I heard from someone, "we don't know where you fit." This is something I've heard my whole life. People don't know how to "shelf" me - because I'm an original.
If you are an original; if you don't fit in a box; don't be discouraged. Not having a shelf for you is one of the greatest compliments you can receive.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 774: Oh What a Feeling (Part 2)
I open up about the origin of my love for the Seattle Seahawks. How the start of my adult life was shaped by moving to Kirkland, Washington to attend Northwest Bible College because that's where the Seattle Seahawks practiced. After last year's playoff loss, I gave up on how much I loved the Seahawks because the suffering after a loss was far greater than the joy of a win. I became a neutral fan; and everyone around me benefited from it.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 773: Oh What a Feeling (Part 1)
My head cold is going away and I feel FANTASTIC! Let's talk about feelings shall we. Things that you've put some time, energy, and effort into that results in a good/bad, or win/loss, consider the feeling after the outcome. If the loss puts you in a greater funk than the feeling after a win, you might want to reconsider the time, energy, and effort you put into it. Part 2 tomorrow.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 772: Joy Overflows
When you are passionate about something, it has an element of suffering. Think about it; if you are passionate about something doesn't it sometimes feel like you are suffering through? For me it's basketball. It's personal and I don't talk about my love/hate relationship with basketball much. Making movies on the other hand give me a joy that I can't contain. I talk about it all the time. I have a smile on my face. People that I talk to about it can feel my joy. You see, joy overflows while passion can be hidden. Let others see the joy in you.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 771: Confidence Looks Good on You
Have you seen the Toyota commercial where everyone tells this person, "you got this?" It is an incredible commercial that ends with the tag line: Confidence Looks Good on You. Check it out and follow their lead. Tell someone, "you got this" today.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 770: Reality is not Truth
If people feel you aren't being realistic because you are positive all the time, kudos to you, and remember this simple fact: REALITY IS NOT TRUTH. REALITY is a collection of TRUTHS. Consider someone who is underpaid for the work they do. There are three truths to this reality:
They have a job.
The job pays them.
The job pays them less than market value
In every reality there are multiple truths that you can focus on. Always focusing on the positive truth within the reality, doesn't lessen your impact or effectiveness in what you do. When you focus on the positive truth, it can actually help you get through your daily grind.
Got it? Yeah, you got it, NOW go GET IT!
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 769: Let Them Be Wrong
If you are in leadership have you come across someone who is insubordinate to your requests? Could it be they are focusing on a perspective and can't lift their head enough to see how you are leading them? My suggestion to you is let them be wrong before you give your rebuttal. As a leader, you need to lead, however, if you jump all over them when you know they are wrong, they don't think you are listening to them. Even though they are wrong, pause before you show them the error in their ways. Let them be wrong.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 768: The Starbucks Goof Card
When mistakes are made how do you overcome them? Last week I had missed two meetings because I wasn't included in a calendar invite. I'm a big fan of calendars since they keep me focused on what needs to be done. Since I'm new to this environment I thought about how to inform them to send me a calendar invite when notifying me of a meeting time. I was a little upset that people may think it was my fault for being late to the meeting. Then I thought to myself, what if it was my fault? By taking responsibility for my part in the goof allowed me to consider their perspective. I immediately purchased two Starbucks gift cards and sent them to the individuals I was supposed to meet with. I called them the Starbucks Goof Card. My goof was there reward.
It was a valuable lesson that I wanted to share this beautiful Monday morning. Next time things happen that aren't your fault, as yourself, what if it was my fault?
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 767: The Lonely Leader
Leaders can be lonely from time to time because they are out front while their followers are behind them. Followers are in a group of more than one so they aren't as lonely as a leader. If you are a leader do you feel lonely? To avoid the lonely feeling, become a follower of a greater leader. Yep. It's that simple. Find someone who is a greater leader and join the followers who are already following and you'll no longer be alone. You'll also gain some valuable insight into leadership while you are following.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 766: If You Are A New Leader
I love how John C. Maxwell defines a leader. He writes a leader is someone with followers. So how do you inspire people to follow you? This is a question that many have asked. The first step for a new leader to inspire followers is to be who they say they are. Credibility is the first step for anyone looking to grow their followers. We live in a world of social media influencers who suggest do what they say and not what they do. That's fine if you want shallow followers. If you want deep followers in your family, work, or team you may coach, you'll need to be legit. You'll need to establish credibility right at the onset of your relationship.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 765: The Bookends of Success
As we learned yesterday, success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Or perhaps I could write it like this: success is the ACCOMPLISHMENT of an aim or purpose. As John C. Maxwell writes in his book, Good Leaders ask Great Questions, success is bookended by a start and a finish. Most of us start something with the intention of finishing. There is no need to overthink the finish of an aim or purpose. It's simple; JUST finish.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 764: How Do You Define Success?
Success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. The more you know your aim or purpose the more you can evaluate what you may need to give up to achieve the aim or purpose. That is success. Is this podcast a success? I think so, however, someone looking to put their ads on my podcast may think otherwise. They might find my 15 average listeners as a failing podcast.
I define success with this podcast by doing it Monday through Friday until we get to 1,000 episodes.
How do you define success i what you are involved in?
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 763: Are You Ready To Heal?
Often times I'll hear an incredible story by people I meet. When I hear these incredible stories, I encourage them to share their story because of how much it could provide hope for others. Some of those same people will say, "oh no, I can't share that. I'm not ready." I understand completely. They are not ready to heal.
Healing comes from sharing your story. The Catholic church has known this for years with their confessional time. The more you talk about our hurt, trauma, or "sin," the more you are removed from it which allows healing to begin and continue. Are you ready to heal?
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 762 - Ten Truths About Leadership
In the book, The Truth About Leadership by James Kouzes & Barry Posner, they share ten truths about leadership:
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 761: Know Your Values
In the book, Lead With Heart by Tom Gartland, he wrote, when you know your values, you know your value. Do you know your core values? Core values help guide decisions made in your family, work, church, team, etc. If you don't have a strong understanding of your core values, you may struggle to make the decision that allows you to sleep peacefully at night.
If you do an online search of how to find your core values, you'll find plenty of articles that will reveal methods to better understand what makes you, you. And that is the greatest value of them all.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 760: All Children Are Born Geniuses
Buckminister Fuller has been credited as saying, "All children are born geniuses: 9,999 out of 10,000 are swiftly, inadvertently, de-geniusized by grown ups." Now that you aren't a child, don't be someone who is swiftly, inadvertently, de-geniusizing the genius out of the kids you come in contact with.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 759: A Transparent Leader
The definition of transparency is: having thoughts, feelings, or motives that are easily perceived.
Indeed.com describes being a transparent leader or transparent worker as someone who shares their thoughts and opinions honestly and respectfully. Transparency is an approach to communicating and forming relationships that emphasize being direct with people in your workplace.
Although I agree with a lot of these descriptions, I also believe it's ok to leave things out of the workplace. Things like Religion, Politics, and Stock Tips. An effective "transparent leader"in my opinion, is one that shares their thoughts and opinions honestly as it relates to the vision they've put forth for their organization, department, team or group. When a leader is transparent, it allows others to either follow them or not. There is no question of where that leader is going because they are so transparent.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 758: Do You Really “Have” To?
When someone says, “they have to do something,” it implies they lack the choice of either doing said something or not doing said something.
This falls in line with the phrase, “I can’t.”
I used to say, “I can’t sell sand in the desert” until I realized I had a choice. I could sell something not needed to someone who was willing to buy it. I just won’t. I changed; I can’t sell sand in the desert to I won’t sell sand in the desert.
It’s the same thought process when someone asks you do do something and you say, “no, I have to do something else.” You don’t have to do anything; you get to do something.
This little changing of your mindset can go a long way with bigger decisions made for you and your family.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 757 - The CEO Pitch
The biggest inspiration for my upcoming book, Don't Be a Son of a Pitch: How to Increase Sales Without a Sales Pitch was inmails received on LinkedIn that went straight for the pitch.
Yesterday, I received a pitch from a CEO who was in a mood to duke it out just like I was. I talk about it on this morning's podcast.
Remember: The sales pitch is dead. Instead of perfecting your pitch, perfect the way you sell and don't be a son of a pitch.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 756 - Time For a Fill Up?
I love busy people! I'm a busy person and busy people get things done baby! The thing about busy people though is we sometimes forget to gas up. I read this in a book recently, have you ever been too busy driving to stop for gas?
You aren't any good unless you've got the gas to make you vrooooooooom.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 755 - Not on the Vain Train
There is a difference between having assurances of who you are and our abilities and being vain. Vain is defined as: having or showing an excessively high opinion of one's appearance, abilities, or worth. A few weeks ago, I spoke at schools from my home town on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was an incredible experience. During on of the sessions the teacher informed me that she would have to take out a portion of the class to study for an upcoming test. I thanked her for letting me know and asked if she could give me five minutes because they've never heard anyone like me. She didn't know how to receive what I said yet could tell I wasn't saying it with conceit. She let the students stay for five minutes and none of them wanted to leave. It was a great time.
You can be confident in your abilities and not be on the Vain Train. It's an empowering feeling when you receive validation from yourself, God, and no one else. Combine that with the right level of preparation and you can confidently say, "they've never heard anyone like me."
Don't believe you can do it? I do. I know you can do it!
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 754 - The Nine9 Scam
There is a company called Nine9 that purchases social media ads that gives the impression they will submit non-union actors to movie or modeling roles. Here's the catch: IT COST $99.
It was an obvious scam, however, the scam wasn't truly revealed until I attended the group casting call. Sometimes we miss out on legit opportunities because it feels like a scam. You won't know it's a scam until you are actually a part of the presentation of the scam. If you have the time and it's something you've always wanted to do, check it out. Just don't spend any of your hard earned money.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 753 - Seven Deadly Sins by Gandhi
Gandhi was a Hindu activist, lawyer, politician, and writer. He documented seven deadly sins that I think are important to remember in today's world.
Instead of pointing out these "sins" in others, work on them for yourself. If we all do that we will experience a better life for all.

The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 750 - 2021 Thanksgiving Week: WHY
*SPOILER ALERT*
It's Thanksgiving week! Every year on the DWU Micro-Podcast we take this week to give thanks.
Monday - Thankful for WHO is in our life Tuesday - Thankful for WHAT is in our life Wednesday - WHY we are thankful Thursday - When are we thankful Friday - Where are we thankful
Today we recognize WHY we are thankful.
Last night I saw the movie Eternals and one of the Eternals (Druig) had a super power that allowed him to control minds. This was a creepy super power since people would stop what they were doing and do the bidding of Druig.
My WHY I'm thankful is because I serve a God referenced in the Bible that doesn't control our minds. After seeing how creepy it was for someone to snap their fingers and control every human in the area, I'm thankful God has given us a free choice. Even if our free choice is rejecting Him and His goodness.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 749 - 2021 Thanksgiving Week: WHAT
It's Thanksgiving week! Every year on the DWU Micro-Podcast we take this week to give thanks.
Monday - Thankful for WHO is in our life Tuesday - Thankful for WHAT is in our life Wednesday - WHY we are thankful Thursday - When are we thankful Friday - Where are we thankful
Today we are thankful for the WHAT in our life. Write out three answers to these questions:
WHAT three things do you do that you are thankful for? WHAT three things do you have that you are thankful for?
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 748 - 2021 Thanksgiving Week: WHO
It's Thanksgiving week! Every year on the DWU Micro-Podcast we take this week to give thanks.
Monday - Thankful for WHO is in our life Tuesday - Thankful for WHAT is in our life Wednesday - WHY we are thankful Thursday - When are we thankful Friday - Where are we thankful
If you have my book, go to page 59 and read a topic a week to help guide you through the thankfulness process. Today we are thankful for the WHO in our life. Answer these three questions:
WHO inspired you recently? WHO has bullied you recently? WHO showed out-of-the-blue kindness recently?
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 747 - What Can You Do With Zero Prep?
As I was getting ready yesterday, I received a reminder that my speaking session was about to start. "Uh oh," I thought to myself as I ran to my computer to log in. I had completely forgotten about speaking to the 7th grade class at a local middle school here in Las Vegas. My computer loaded right at 9:00 AM and I was there to say good morning to the students.
There was zero prep for my talk yesterday, however, because I've done my speech so many times it went perfectly. What can you do with zero prep? It is most likely something that you are already good at. Things you can do without prep is an indication of what your future may hold as a side-hustle or career path. It's a hint to how you were designed by our Creator.
Got it? Yeah, you got it, now go get it!
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 746 - Smile in the Midst of Conflict
I was the white hat referee last Saturday and had my first heckler. This guy heckled me the entire game. Mocking me with zingers; some of which were rather funny. Since I was in the middle of the football field, I did what all professional athletes do when getting heckled, I watched him. It was fascinating to see how he responded with me looking at him.
One of his zingers got me to laugh and he saw my smile. He shouted, "yeah, you keep smiling ref. You suck!" Well, I did keep smiling and he kept heckling.
The next time you have a heckler or bully in your life that won't stop heckling you, try smiling. If their zingers are funny, laugh. Maybe even compliment their shirt (genuine compliment of course). When you smile, you are responding in a way the heckler isn't expecting. And that's just marvelous.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 745 - Personal Purpose Statement Exercise
Yesterday we talked about creating a personal purpose statement. Something that defines your purpose in life. Some of you may not know how to do that. Here is an exercise you can do to help create a personal purpose statement by answering three times to each of these questions.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 744 - Personal Purpose Statement
Normally when you think of purpose statements you connect it with a business or having to do with a presentation. When I searched online for a definition, the common one read: A purpose statement is a declarative sentence which summarizes the specific topic and goals of the document.
What about a personal purpose statement; a statement that describes you? Do you have one? If not write out a declarative sentence or statement that summarizes your specific goals of your life. Can you write one out that is about others?
I'll share mine so you can use it as an example. My purpose statement is to provoke thought, inspire hope, and ignite a fire in you my listening audience.
Now it's your turn!
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 743 – Is Confidence the Same as Self-Esteem?
Last week I read a really good book on leadership titled, The High Achiever’s Guide to Happiness by Vance & Carol Ann Caesar. In it they describe how high achievers find happiness. One thing I especially liked was how they describe the difference between confidence and self-esteem.
I may not be confident in running a business, however my self-esteem as a leader is high.
What I want you to think about is your overall self-esteem. The definition of self-esteem is confidence in one’s own worth or abilities, self-respect.
Remember that this episode is about the difference of confidence and self-esteem. Yet, self-esteem is being confident in you. You can be confident in you and not confident in other specific areas of your life. The point is to be confident in the specific person of you.
How do you feel about yourself? Tomorrow we are going to talk about establishing a purpose statement for you and your personal life. On Wednesday, we will give you ways to create your purpose statement. You can lack confidence and still have a high level of self-esteem.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 742 - How to Respond to The But Guy
Yesterday, I encouraged you to not be the But Guy. Today, I wanted to share with you how to respond to The But Guy. First off, don't try to combat them or disagree with them on their point. When they respond with, "but" or "actually" hear them out. Practice active listening and show them you are listening with your body language. Respond with kindness and appreciation that they were comfortable enough to give their view. Assume they are struggling with negative thoughts or going through some hard times which will help you show empathy. The only time I tell people to leave a friendship is when it's toxic. Toxic friendships are ones that suck all the joy from you and you don't feel good about yourself when you are with them.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 741 - The But Guy
Have you had a good idea only to have someone respond to your idea with "but" as the first word of their sentence? Don't be The But Guy (or gal) that responds with a contrary view so quickly. Remember Oscar from the sitcom, The Office? He would respond to conversations with "actually" then proceeding to educate everyone else on how they were wrong.
When others share something with you like an idea, really listen to what they are saying. Hear every part of their thought and even if it's a ridiculous idea, don't be a but guy and make them feel ridiculous.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 740 - Mr. Big Stuff
Mr. Big Stuff, who do you think you are? Living the life of an entrepreneur is one that requires knowing as many people as you can in growing your business or side-hustle(s). For me, I'm still living the life of an entrepreneur because I haven't found a W2 employee position that will allow me to provide for my family the way I used to. So I'm living in the "in-between" which means I need to meet, mingle, and network with as many people as I can.
Sometimes I'll meet a Mr. Big Stuff. I like meeting Mr. Big Stuff's because it shows me they have accomplished things in life I'd like to accomplish. What has happened though is they don't consider me their equal. Why would they? They don't know me or my abilities. Instead of taking offense to this behavior, I've learned to be patient because I know they will eventually know who I am (#knowTroy) and when they come back to me for collaboration, I'll be ready.
Give Mr. Big Stuff the benefit of the doubt and be ready when they call upon you.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 739 - People of Integrity
When asked if he was vaccinated, Aaron Rodgers said, "yes, I am immunized." By saying, "yes," Aaron Rodgers confirmed that he was indeed vaccinated when he wasn't. Reports have revealed that he is upset that people are so upset when he said he was immunized. It feels like he thinks he didn't lie. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and acknowledge it wasn't technically a lie. Even if it wasn't a lie, it was still meant to deceive his audience into thinking he was the same as those who were vaccinated. I'm not pro vaccine, I'm not anti-vaccine, what we can all learn from this though is to be people of integrity. So many of us will not technically lie however our intention is to mislead which has the same result. When you live with integrity, you can avoid a lot of the unfair criticism that Aaron Rodgers is receiving right now.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 738 - The Bait & Switch
Even though the sales pitch is dead, the bait and switch is alive and well. From fast food ads to a used car lot, more and more businesses are utilizing a technique that promises something grand; only it's often underwhelming for the customers. We call this the bait and switch. What do customers do about it? Nothing. So the bait and switch grows with businesses who are trying to make their statement to the world.
If you are a business owner could you commit to being true to your promise? If you promise something to your customers, could you make sure you actually fulfill it? I assure you, your reputation will spread and your business will grow.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 737 - Resiliency is Gained Bit-By-Bit
Resilience is a noun and defined as:
There is a fine line between resiliency and not letting go. When you can't let go it's a bad thing. When you never give up, it's a good thing. Understanding the differences will show others (through your actions) just how resilient you are. When others see how resilient you are, it will result in increased opportunities and earnings. You got it? Yeah, you got it; now go get it.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 736 - Grow With Someone
If you are having trouble with personal growth, find someone to grow with. Personal growth is important to your spiritual, financial, physical, and emotional health. Most of the time we know exactly what we need to do; we know how to grow. We just don't do it. When you have someone you can grow with, they will hold you accountable like you will hold them accountable since both of you want to grow.

The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 733 - Destiny Trapped by Words
If I were to become a Real Estate Broker because I know how much money I could make, those that know me well would ask me what's wrong. They would know it's not my future because of how often I've talked about my future destiny in making movies.
I'm not afraid to speak about my future because I know it to be true. Talking abut it only validates my belief and it incorporates those who I appreciate the most to join me in my dream.
Do you know what your future destiny has for you? If so, tell someone confidently about it. Protect your destiny with your words.
The Daily Wake Up Micro-Podcast Episode 732 - Energy Needed to Connect
John C. Maxwell is one of my favorite authors. He writes in Everyone Communicates Few Connect five ways to use energy to connect with others:
