John
A podcast where we have had honest discussion around important Biblical interpretations as they intersect with our study, our historical understanding and personal "convictions". We go deep (or shallow) in this "fat" book we call the Bible, trying to be upfront about the issues it raises. This 11-part podcast was a part of the ongoing Faith & Scripture blog, active since 2014, where we ask: Why is it important that the Father and the Son are not confused? How much of what I believe is church tradition? What does Sola Scriptura mean when confronted with the orthodox doctrines of Christianity? Here are snippets of my journey!
Moving a way from Father/Son ambiguity and toward a more nuanced understanding of 'Lord'. This ranges from the history of the Greek authority term, Kyrios, to a fascinating insight into Yahweh translations as a Name.
Today we wrap up our short series on the Old Testament prophetic book of Job. A few key gleanings to take away with us:
- Joel was important in shaping Jewish-Christian theology, particularly with respect to the Holy Spirit's wide outpouring. How wide was perhaps the greatest task for earl Christianity.
- As with other OT prophetic books of same genre, the day of Yahweh cannot mean a 24 hour period. Generations are concerned; major restoration and condemnation that…..
- Involves both natural and supernatural realms
- A stage of deportation seems already realised with some "Elders" left to oversee the precious land, although there is some movement through divine "timescape"
- Literal locust infestation seems unlikely, but remains possible.
- Not a full prophetic picture. Restoration where other nations are reclaimed. Link perhaps also with Peter's initial limitations.

In today's episode, we arrive at last in Joel 2 at the key points in Joel's description of "the day of Yahweh" that in light of the earliest Christians' experience, pushed all their buttons.
With respect to my own hypothesis of the Triune Hub, Joel draws into light the third key mutation of the nature of the arrival of the Kingdom of God in first century Christianity, as developed by John Dominic Crossan (https://www.johndominiccrossan.com/).
Apologies for some of the truncation in the audio today in the second half. This was due to me holding the mic too far from my mouth and general incompetence.

...including a fresh rediscovery of the gospel for me, how we carefully overlap the LXX and NT usages of Kyrios, why Joel became special.
On God being "our Lord" or "our LORD", results are as scant as I predicted in the audio: divine references to "our kyrios" is limited to those FOUR Old Testament instances, all of which are translating Adonai.

Today we really just follow wherever the conversation leads, wanting to look (and where possible, be amazed) at justice when attributed to God, how it might help frame his love and grace, and yet also how we can engage with non-theistic people who see morality as a natural outworking of an intelligent species. In our opening episode we set the tone of honest conversation around topics that we reckon Christians should be willing to question.
