Growing up in the Philippines, Catherine didn't see much of her mum who left when she was six to work around the world as an RN, coming back only a few times a year to visit.Twenty one years later, Catherine joined her mum in Australia, as a single mum and began studying nursing as an international student. When I asked Catherine to describe what her role as a care manager in aged care entails she said "I always tell the families of my residents that in their absence I am your family member's biggest advocate."Catherine's story is a heart warming tale of perseverance and finding your calling in an often overlooked specialty. Linda champions greater understanding and action on the social determinants of health and key policies that will enhance socio-economic equity, including a national pharmacare program and justice for Indigenous communities. Linda’s clinical background is ICU, emergency, and labour and delivery. Linda believes health care, like education and decent work, is a human right. She embodies the CFNU motto “Where knowledge meets know-how.Bonnie Castillo, RN, is executive director of National Nurses United (NNU), California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC), the largest U.S. union and professional association of registered nurses with more than 170,000 members. Bonnie is a globally recognized nursing and labour leader, who in 2020 was named as one of the TIME 100 most influential people in the world, and in Modern Healthcare’s list of 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare and 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives. She has been with CNA/NNOC for almost two decades in a number of important capacities, working her way up into the leadership of the organization from her early days as a registered nurse member who helped to unionize her facility, to staff and then lead organizer, to a director, and now to her current position as executive director.Shaye joined the NSWNMA in 2008 whilst working as a registered nurse in the emergency department at Campbelltown Hospital, she soon became an active member, campaigning with her colleagues for improvements to staffing. With growing appreciation of the work of the union, Shaye was successful in obtaining an Organiser position within the Public Health sector team before she quickly rose to the position of Lead Organiser, and then Campaign Coordinator of the Public Health Sector 2018 ratios campaign. COVID-19 and aged care: a pandemic of virtue, vicissitude and vanity.Joseph Ibrahim is a medical specialist in geriatrics and an academic Professor and Head of the Health Law and Ageing Research Unit at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Monash University. Joseph has over 30 years of clinical experience as a doctor in the public hospital system providing care for older people, he brings that knowledge and insights to research work. Joseph’s research team focuses on reducing harm to older persons from neglect, poor care and abuse as well as seeking to improve the quality of life for older people. This episode Shaye speaks with Lorna Scott. Lorna is a nurse practitioner, women’s health nurse and NSWNMA Councillor and proud Scotswoman. Lorna moved to Australia from Scotland in the 80s for, as she puts it the “nicer weather”, but it wasn’t long before Lorna had thrown herself into the world of Australian nursing. In 1987 Lorna became one of the first Women’s Health nurses in Australia and in the 1990s was part of a groundbreaking nurse practitioner pilot. 33 years on, Lorna is still loving working as a nurse practitioner and women’s health nurse. She has some hilarious stories from her inspiring career to share with us.
This week Shaye is joined by a giant in Australia’s nursing history, Valda Wiles AM. Valda commenced her nursing career in 1956, and was a pioneer in the field of critical care nursing. She was also instrumental in winning today’s clinical care structure and the introduction of Clinical Nurse Specialists in our nursing teams. On top of this, she was also a union stalwart and authored a book on the history of critical care in Australia. For her work, she was awarded an Order of Australia in 1997.

This week Shaye speaks with Deb Lang. Deb is a retired nurse and midwife, with an incredibly varied career. After training and working in hospitals in Sydney in the 1970s, Deb then spent time working in Goulburn and the Central Coast, retiring recently from her role as a rehab CNC at Gosford Private Hospital. She was a member of the NSWNMA Council for many years and still remains involved in our campaigns through our Retired Member Activist Group. Her passions include veterans health and voluntary assisted dying, which they discuss in this episode.

In Australia a woman dies every week because of family and domestic violence.
Family and domestic violence is the leading cause of death, disability and illness among women aged 15-44 years, greater than cancer or heart disease.
And yet access to paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave is limited. Paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave means a woman can access support services so she can leave. It means she can attend court, doctor appointments, meet with real estate agents, change her children’s school, all without the fear of losing her job.
Paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave will save lives. The estimated cost of introducing a minimum 10 days’ paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave in the National Employment Standards is just five cents per day per worker. And the estimated cost of family and domestic violence to the economy is $12.6 billion per year.
