Jazz88's Peter Solomon spoke with organist Pat Bianchi about his relationship to the Hammond B-3 organ and the influence of the late organist Joey DeFrancesco. Bianchi will perform at the Crooners Main Stage Thursday, November 14th with drummer Byron Landham and guitarist Paul Bollenback, who served as DeFrancesco's rhythm section for many years.
Scott Amendola is a bay-area drummer and composer who has had long associations with artists like Charlie Hunter and Nels Cline. He performs with a trio including clarinetist Ben Goldberg and bassist Todd Sickafoose at Jazz Central on Thursday, November 7th. The group just released an album called "Here to There" consisting of music inspired by the bridge sections, i.e. the transition sections, of Thelonious Monk tunes. Chris Botti is renowned trumpeter with lots of crossover appeal and a penchant for recording ballads. In this conversation with Jazz88's Peter Solomon, Botti discusses his musical inspirations, discusses studying with legendary post-bop trumpeter Woody Shaw, recalls his days touring with the temperamental drum legend and bandleader Buddy Rich, and speaks on the varying approaches he takes to live shows verses albums, he also talks about getting to know Michael Brecker. Botti is playing a residency at the Dakota from October 28 - October 30.

Jazz88's Peter Solomon speaks with Richard Cortez. The New-York based singer is releasing his debut album "Mood Swings" this week. Cortez discusses how his long history of gay activism plays into his musical career. Remarkably, he only started singing jazz publicly four years ago. He made a name for himself by organizing jazz performances at some of the gay bars in New York where he worked as a go go dancer.
Jazz88's Peter Solomon speaks with Jeff Coffin, a multi-instrumentalist/composer who is well-known for his role as saxophonist with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and the Dave Matthews Band. On "Only the Horizon," his 23rd album as a leader, he collaborates with a West African percussion group called the Yeli ensemble as well as guitarist Cory Wong, banjoist Bela Fleck, blues icon Keb Mo and others. The Dave Matthews band, including Coffin, are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on October 19th.

He talks about the changes that he initiated with the school system's culinary and wellness department when he came on board in 2012, and how he has reduced the amount of processed foods that the students are served in their meals.

After the film won an Oscar, Shaw sued Berman for a portion of the profits. Berman discusses Shaw's amazing musical accomplishments, his struggle to balance commercial success with artistic integrity and the challenges of dealing with his notoriously difficult personality.

Sousaphonist Erik Jacobson’s romance with New Orleans brass bands started when we was in high school and was exposed to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band record “My Feet Can’t Fail Me Now.” After sharing the album with fellow University of Wisconsin-Madison music student Christopher “Roc” Ohly, he started up Mama Digdown’s Brass Band. They’ve kept it going for thirty years and have toured all over, including making more than fifty trips to New Orleans. It’s become a kind of family band, as both Ohly and Jacobson each have children that regularly sit in with the group (see attached picture in which Ohly is towing his four-year old son with a rope tied around his waist and attached to a wagon in which his son plays trombone). Friday, January 12th, Mama Digdown’s Brass Band plays a concert at the Parkway Theatre, sharing a billing with the Akie Berniss Trio and comedian Trish Cook. Erik Jacobson spoke with Jazz88’s Peter Solomon about the history behind the band and what makes him so passionate about New Orleans brass band music.

Some changes are coming to Minneapolis Public Schools in the next couple of months. There will be new leadership with a permanent Superintendent set to take over soon for the current interim Superintendent Rochelle Cox, who MPS Voices Executive Producer Manny Hill recently caught up with. Manny and Rochelle talk about a few topics, as the winter break is coming up, but first they discussed the news of the new Superintendent coming on board.

Denneson says that the week was not just created to raise awareness about the safety of crash responders, but to encourage the driving public to consider their own safety in potentially hazardous driving situations. Alonzo King Lines Ballet will perform an original work called "Deep River," blending music from Jewish and African American spiritual traditions with a score by pianist, composer, and MacArthur fellow Jason Moran and vocals by Grammy-award winning singer Lisa Fischer. Payments on federal student loans resumed in October after a 3-year pause. More than 800,000 people in the state of Minnesota have federal student loan debt. That debt, combined with state and private loans, according to the Minnesota Office of Higher Education, has made the median loan for student borrowers in Minnesota nearly $24,000. Jazz88’s Peter Solomon spoke with Kim Miller, financial counselor at LSS Services about what borrowers can do to become informed about loan servicers, repayment options, getting out of default, and where to obtain free financial counseling.

Blumenfeld was a Jewish immigrant who became extremely rich and influential in the Twin Cities during the prohibition era. He was accused of many crimes, but almost always skated. Liggett suspected him of engaging in business dealings with Minnesota Governor Floyd B. Olson. The story of Liggett’s murder became so big that it knocked the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby off the front page of the papers.
