After two straight losses filled with penalties and sloppy play, John Hynes took the ice for Monday's practice on a mission. The players skated early and often, running what was described by many as the most intense practice of his tenure.
Up next is the Nashville Predators, who come in flying and are undoubtedly one of the best teams in the league once again this year.
Looking to right the ship against one of their biggest rivals, the Devils came out flat against the Flyers on Saturday in Philadelphia. Though the game was tied in the third period, a late goal gave the Flyers the lead before they tacked on two more empty-netters.
The Colorado Avalanche were too much to handle at Prudential Center on Thursday night, as the Devils lost their first game of the season, 5-3 to the Avs. Despite Taylor Hall and Nico Hischier each netting their first goal of the season, there was plenty to be desired from the effort. On top of that, Travis Zajac left the game with a suspected leg injury.
Another game and another win for the Devils. Though it might not have been their most all-encompassing effort of the season, strong defense and great goaltending helped the Devils to a 3-0 win over the Dallas Stars. Kyle Palmieri stayed red hot and Blake Coleman and Jean-Sebastian Dea also added goals for NJ as they improve to 4-0-0 on the season.
While it wasn't their prettiest effort to date, the result was more of the same. The Devils used two third period goals to squeak past the San Jose Sharks 3-2 at Prudential Center.

Damon Severson has shown to be an analytics monster, but his play in his own zone has limited Coach Hynes' trust in him, especially as he was sat down the stretch. Pavel Zacha will always be looked at as the player the Devils took 6th overall with some other more successful names on the board. Pavel showed signs of improvement last season, especially in the defensive end, but he'll be counted on to put up more points if he's to stay as the club's number two center.

Zajac found a nice role as the third line center in between Blake Coleman and Stefan Noesen last year, but what will it mean for him in 2018-19. As we roll on through the offseason, we’ve reached a show that brings out a plethora of opinions. On Monday’s Devils Daily, we will debate whether or not the team should keep their UFA/RFA players and award them new contracts.
Many of you filled out the questionnaire, so it’ll give us a great chance to debate.
ln Thursday’s show we’re joined by Corey Masisak, Devils writer for The Athletic as we touch on a number of Devils-related topics.
Then, it’s time to hand out grades for John Hynes and Ray Shero.
Today's grades will focus on the netminders, as we just about wrap up the player grades segment of the offseason. Cory Schneider, Keith Kinkaid, Ken Appleby and Eddie Lack will all be discussed.
As we just about wrap up our offseason grades, we move on to some players that didn't play as much. Santini, Hayes, Johansson, Mueller, Grabner, Maroon, Lappin, Pietila, Quenneville, Rooney are all on the table.
As we continue on through our player grades, today we'll discuss the play of Stefan Noesen and Drew Stafford. While Noesen was able to assert himself as a contributing player in 2017-18, the signing of Drew Stafford paid early dividends, but failed to produce results as the season went on.
Two Devils prospects will be playing for the Memorial Cup, as Colby Sissons of the Swift Current Broncos of the WHL and Marian Studenic of the Hamilton Bulldogs in the OHL both have qualified and won their respective leagues.
We'll touch quickly on some roster news and notes before heading back onto grades. Miles Wood and Pavel Zacha were big-time contributors this season, but both of them showed the need for improvement, as well. We will debate on these two young players.
Our first interview of the offseason brings back Minnesota Duluth Head Coach and reigning National Champion, Scott Sandelin. Sandelin will chat with us about Joey Anderson as well as the incredible run the Bulldogs went on in the NCAA tournament that culminated with two wins in St. Paul.
Then, we'll give out grades for two forwards as we discuss the seasons of Blake Coleman and Brian Gibbons.
As we roll on through May, it's on to two more polarizing players for grades. Jesper Bratt started out strong but finished the second half of the season without much production. As for Sami Vatanen, he was instantly the Devils best defender since coming over from Anaheim.
We'll also touch on Team USA at the World Championships, as Keith Kinkaid notched his 2nd straight shutout in a 3-0 Team USA win over Germany.
Towards the end of the show, we react live to the latest information about the successful surgeries for Taylor Hall, Cory Schneider and Patrick Maroon.
As the IIHF Worlds push on, Will Butcher has already left his mark, as has Keith Kinkaid. We'll take a look at the ongoing tournament in Denmark. Then it's on to player grades once again, as we discuss the easiest one (Hall) and perhaps the most difficult player to grade in Damon Severson.

There was so much to like about the rookie season of Nico Hischier. He took on the first line center role and ran with it, en route to a playoff berth. We will hand out a grade for the young center and for defenseman John Moore, as well.
We also chatted about 2017 5th round pick Gilles Senn making the Swiss roster for the World Championships and the differences between Tom Wilson's hit on Zach Aston-Reese and Nikita Kucherov on Sami Vatanen.
Next up for player grades are Will Butcher and Travis Zajac. Butcher, who burst onto the scene after being signed in the offseason had a strong rookie season that is continuing in the IIHF World Championships in Denmark. Zajac found some cohesiveness later on in the year and turned in another solid performance.

As we roll on into the second day of player previews, we'll discuss two of the more polarizing players on the team in defenseman Ben Lovejoy and center Brian Boyle. We'll run down what both did this season and then hand out grades. We'll take a look at the poll and read your comments/questions, as well.
Also a look at the situation in Toronto, as Lou Lamoriello steps down as the GM of the Maple Leafs.
As we return with Devils Daily, there's much to talk about. We'll dive into some of the breakup day quotes, as well as the injuries to Hischier and Zacha, Hall being nominated for two awards and players being named to Team USA for the World Championships.

Coming off of a strong weekend, the Devils now begin to focus on their three-game Western Canada swing. First up, the Vancouver Canucks. We'll break down the game with the upstart Canucks and what the Devils will need to do to come away with two points in the contest.
Then we'll look at the Nikita Popugaev situation, as the 2017 4th round pick has signed with CSKA Moskva.
Then it's a look at Aarne Talvitie on the exhibition roster for the upcoming WJC for the Fins and a quick look at some other Devils prospects as well.
Neither win was pretty as a whole, but the Devils found a way to win two home games in back-to-back days over the Ottawa Senators and Arizona Coyotes. After blowing a late-game 4-2 lead over the Sens, the Devils used the shootout to their advantage once again to defeat Ottawa for the second time this season.
Then, on Saturday, the Devils traded goalie Scott Wedgewood to the Coyotes for a 5th round pick after activating Cory Schneider from the IR. Schneider got the win as the Devils used some third period heroics to complete the weekend.
