Children love to play. Using playfulness as a strategy is effective in parenting. It helps to bring the joy back into your family! In this episode I ask Sarah:
Because playful parenting is something that it just really clicks with the kids. They're playful. And I'm just curious, how can we bring that into our parenting?

What's an example of how you can Use that in like an everyday situation, you know?

How can playfulness come into that to help regulate their emotions?

What can I do if I'm not feeling playful as a parent?

How can we then make those repairs and do that reconnection?

Can you tell us more about what you offer and where we can find you?

Do you have any last minute encouragement or tips for parents as they try to be more positive and more playful in their parenting?

As you move from your summer rhythm and schedule into the fall, I’ve got some tips to help you ease that transition.

Tips to transition to school or daycare

  1. Ease into schedule - find out what the new schedule will look like and start the transition slowly
  2. Start practicing early - practice with lunch boxes, school routes, new clothes etc. You'll find the challenges and have time to problem solve
  3. Expect some challenges - changes come with big feelings, be away and offer empathy
  4. Communicate with daycare and teachers - keep the lines of communication open
  5. Consistency - See what you can keep the same, children love to feel safe, secure and in control.

No one wants to be blindsided or caught off guard. As a busy working parent you already know that you need to juggle a lot of schedules, responsibilities and people. Let's use your strengths to help reduce feeling overwhelmed.

Blog post https://gentleparentingcoach.com/2021/08/02/thrive-as-a-working-parent-being-intentional YouTube version https://youtu.be/ekyAWizUO08 Get the Guide

Tips

  • Use your strengths
  • Prioritize what is most important
  • Focus on one small thing at a time
  • Make a plan
  • Be proactive

Reflection questions

What skills and strengths do you use at work?
What are all the thing you do well at home?
What makes you an awesome parent?

When we are stressed and frustrated it is easy to shut down or feel helpless. But you have the gifts and talents to equip you for this role.

Make a list of priorities

Okay I know you make lists all day and are probably wondering how that will help you thrive as a busy mom. This list will help filter our all the noise and distractions pulling you in different directions.

What is most important to your family?
What do you value and hold dear?
What are your priorities at the moment?
Does your time and resources reflect those values?

When facing decisions use this list as a filter to help gain some clarity.

This summer I'll be taking a short break from the podcast. I'll be sharing some of the most popular episodes from The Parenting Coach Podcast with you.

The reason I'm taking a break is to work on launching an incredible program.

All parents want to have a close connection with their children and a peaceful home. Unfortunately most busy working parents find they get overwhelmed by the chaos at home. They feel guilty for resorting to shouting and punishing their kids hoping it will motivate them to do as they’re are told. But without building your relationship and focusing on the right priorities, you’ll end up with fighting, frustration and remorse.

This is why I have created the Joy-filled Parenting Roadmap to help you navigate your parenting journey with joy and purpose. Imagine being able to focus at work and enjoy time with your family, without the struggle of the elusive work-life balance.

Fathers day is coming up and I want to give a big shout out to all the amazing Dads out there.

YouTube https://youtu.be/_b3nJqa8Pm8

In this episode I ask Brad
What are fathers doing well these days? What have you noticed in your practice?

What is something fathers struggle with the most in parenting? Any tips or suggestions?

Some listeners are mothers, hoping to get their partners on board with a more positive, gentler approach to parenting. What do you find dads respond best to?

Meet Brad Moser
Since 2007, I have been providing individual, couples, and family therapy for children, teens, and adults. I am a Registered Psychologist and I work at Associates Counselling Services in Lethbridge, Alberta.

My areas of practice include anger, anxiety, bereavement, childhood and family of origin concerns, depression, identity concerns, marital/relationship distress, men’s and dad’s issues, parenting, self-esteem, separation/divorce, stress, suicidal ideation, and trauma.

The role that provides the most meaning in my life is dad. I am the proud father of two beautiful boys. I host a radio show, Real Dads on Jess FM (www.jessfm.ca). It’s a self-help program for dads and all parents. I am active with engaging dads and letting them know the importance of their role and encouraging everyone to promote positive father involvement.

I had the pleasure of being a guest on the Real Dad Show. Be sure to listen in.

Just a reminder that the podcast has changed names (even I forgot in the intro). Formally the Joyful Mud Puddles Podcast this is now The Parenting Coach Podcast.

Do you have a child that some might describe as strong-willed, determined, stubborn? We all know someone like that I'm sure. Of course I always encourage parents to reframe their thinking towards resilient, problem-solver, stedfast, hard-working, assertive, leader, independent, courageous, or loyal. Looking at the positive traits of a strong-willed child (or adult) helps us to side step the power struggles.

No one wins when we get into a power struggle, especially with our kids. As parents we want to ensure that our children do the right thing, learn the lesson, don’t get away with whatever it is they are doing wrong. But engaging in the fight doesn’t teach them anything positive that will actually benefit them in the long run.

Full blog post here
https://www.joyfulmudpuddles.com/power-struggles-and-strong-willed-children

Here are some tips to help avoid the power struggle

  • Give your child choice
  • Let them take charge
  • Look for win-win solutions
  • Learn through experience
  • Rules and Routines
  • Don't force
  • Empathy and listen to their point of view
  • Focus on connection

Oh, sweet mama, your tireless work has not gone unnoticed. You care for your family, work hard, help with your children’s schoolwork, take care of the household, and give so much of yourself. May you not grow weary from doing good. But, be encouraged my friend to keep going.

Take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Who are you doing all this hard work for? What is your motivation? So often we get caught up in the business of life and motherhood that we forget why it is we are working so hard. Mothers can tend to lose themselves, and forget who they are. Our identity gets tied to something else like their children, career or something else.

“but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” Proverbs 31:30b

Remember my friend to keep your eyes fixed heavenward in all you do. May you find JOY in the work of your hands, in your family, and the Lord.

It is in who we are and how we treat each other, all day, every day that impacts our children, not just one off lessons and reminders. God is not meant for just bedtimes and Sunday mornings. His message has been given for us to live out daily in our everyday lives. Our children are watching, learning, and copying everything we do. So what is your daily life teaching them?

"I messed up" "I got angry" "I snapped"

My friend, I hold your heart gentle in my hands. You are safe here, I've got you. Take a deep breath... go on..and let it all out.

I know you feel like you've messed up, again. Maybe you are worried that you've ruined your kids and damaged them. Perhaps you are mad at yourself because you know better and can't believe you snapped. It is okay. You are not alone. We are only human and there is only so much pressure we can take. I promise I won't gloss over your pain with catchy phrases and things you already know.

What I do want to offer you is hope. Yes! If you are willing to consider this as an opportunity growth and change. There are a few things I really want to sink in...

It is okay to get angry. Anger is a natural response to injustice, or a trigger alerting us that something is wrong. Having feelings is totally normal.

Full blog post: https://www.joyfulmudpuddles.com/it-is-okay-to-get-angry

We often think of anger as a negative emotion that we should avoid, however anger comes up in the Bible many times. As caring people we should be outraged at the injustice, poverty, and suffering around us. Jesus responded in anger towards the ungodly attitudes and actions of others. (Matthew 21:12-13, and Mark 3:5) yet He was not an angry person, nor did He sin.

We can learn from Jesus's response to anger. Firstly our anger should have a good and godly reason behind it. Here I mean things like injustice, poverty, oppression or hypocrisy. Getting angry just because you didn't get your own way is a response your child might have, but they are still growing and developing. Secondly our reaction should be appropriate. One that leads to action that will improve the situation not just acting in anger (sin).

What we don't want is to stay angry, or to act upon that anger in a way that causes harm to ourselves or others. Anger is like a warning light that goes off and let's you know that something isn't right. Our goal then should be to find out what is the real message behind that anger.

When I’m stuck in my parenting and I look for examples of those I respect. There are many great parents to choose from who seem to be getting it right. So many books and experts are available for us to learn from. Who are some of your role models?

As a Christian, Jesus’ life with his disciples comes to mind. Now I know Jesus didn’t have children, but He is the best role model for everything in life. How did He talk? How did He care for others? What would Jesus do? I already know that He was gentle, forgiving, and compassionate. He loved children, He showed respect, and He guided with love.

Saying YES to our children's requests can be difficult.  Our first reaction is most often "no, not right now, maybe later." But what if we took a moment to really think about what they were asking.  Better yet, take a moment to think about your reaction, then ask yourself "why not?"

In looking back through some older blog posts I discovered some great nuggets to share.

Do you learn best when you are feeling anxious, angry, shamed, or disconnected? Probably not. Most people thrive in a calm, loving environment where they feel safe to explore. Learning is vulnerable we "take chances, make mistakes and get messy," as Ms. Frizzy from the Magic School Bus likes to say. Gentle parenting will be a huge help to your child no matter if they are in school or homeschooling. As a parent I know you are invested in their education.

In this podcast I talk about:

  • What is gentle parenting?

You are more than JUST a mom!

Do you ever feel like you are losing yourself in this motherhood role? You used to have passions, hobbies, an identity.

I wear many hats and play many roles as a mother, wife, sister, daughter, business owner, etc. As a Christian another identity I have is in Christ. I am a daughter of the Most High God! A daughter of the King! Wow that is powerful.

Today we are going to unpack our role as mothers, not loosing yourself AND being a child of God!

Back in March of 2020 when the world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I felt the itch to start blogging again after a long break. God placed it on my heart to do more than just blog occasionally. He wanted me to become a parenting coach so I could offer support to struggling parents.

As time went on the idea grew larger. Not only did I start blogging again, I became a parenting coach, started a podcast, built a growing online community and published a book! Not to mention the many guest appearances on TV, podcasts, magazines, blogs and newspapers.

Read the full devotional here: https://joyfulmudpuddles.blogspot.com/2020/11/christmas-treasures-lessons-from-mary.html

As we get closer to Christmas our thoughts turn towards Jesus' birth. Over the years I have considered different parts of the Nativity. Often wondering what it would have been like for each of the people involved. This year as I have been wrapped up in the middle of writing a devotional book for mothers, a single verse stuck out in the book of Luke.

"But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart." Luke 2:19

As a mom I can relate to Mary. The miracle of birth, even in all the chaos that follows, amazes us as we hold our precious new born. These treasured moments connect us to our little one and the One who created this little miracle.

In the busyness of life do you still take time to treasure moments and think about them?

Do you stand in awe of all God has done in your life?

Do you pause during your day to be present with your children?

Take a lesson from Mary. This Christmas I encourage you to take the time to thank God for all the blessings in your life. Consider the magnitude, wonder and events of the first Christmas. Worship Jesus, who came personally into the world to rescue, love and forgive us. And be sure to pause in the midst of your festivities to enjoy being with your kids. Treasure all these things. Store them in your heart and think about them.

For devotionals that truly touch on what it means to be both a daughter of the The Lord and a mother to your children, visit www.joyfulmudpuddles.com/joyful-motherhood for a FREE sample of my new book Joyful Motherhood. Available on Kindle and Amazon.

Kids and toys go hand in hand, don't they? Not necessarily.

What do you do if your child isn't really interested in toys? I can't be the only one whose children would rather play with the egg beater or a hammer over race cars and dolls.

Does it make you feel uncomfortable? How do you handle it?

Full blogpost:
https://joyfulmudpuddles.blogspot.com/2020/12/help-my-kids-dont-play-with-toys.html

Some toys may hold your kids' attention longer than others, and your children may go through phases with their interests. That is okay and totally normal. I want you to know you are not alone. Society puts way too much pressure on parents. You know big toymakers and marketing to children are relatively new in the history of the world.

For centuries children may have had a few simple toys, a doll, a ball, and nature objects. They would participate in the real work of running the home or become an apprentice. Kids used to just spend hours exploring outside. The idea of children needing entertainment to fill the hours of their day would have seemed ridiculous (just go ask your own parents or grandparents).

I'd like to challenge your thinking just slightly if I may
Are you okay with your children not really being interested in traditional toys?
What is your comfort level towards children doing 'real' work or projects?
Do you feel you need to entertain your children?
What would happen if your kids were bored?
What are they interested in?
In your mind what is the purpose of play?

When we change our thinking about play we can begin to think of all sorts of new and creative ways to engage our children. Did you know that there are around 16 different types of play? That is far more than the dramatic, construction, and creative play areas we most often think about. Play is all about doing an activity for fun rather than a specific purpose.

As an adult would you want to be in a controlling or forceful relationship? How do you feel when you are told what to do? Think about being volunteered for a position that you didn't really want to take. You would likely feel the urge to push back, or feel angry. This is how our kids feel about being told what to do all day long.

I know that there is a lot of debate around obedience, especially when the bible does repeatedly does mention obedience. But there is a difference between forced obedience and willing cooperation / choosing to obey. The word obey means to comply with a command or request. So doing the action that was requested is obedience, but we should also be concerned with the heart or attitude behind it.

In this episode I talk about

  • The down side of forced obedience
  • Benefits of cooperation
  • Tips for winning cooperation
  • Listening Tips
  • Additional Strategies
  • Caring for yourself

Heather Boyd is a private practice occupational therapist from Niagara, Ontario and mother to three boys. She has nearly 20 years of experience in family-centred infant development. Heather provides virtual consulting to families who are concerned about infant sleep, parenting, child development, and environmental health. She takes an attachment-based approach to supporting families and helps parents increase knowledge and change perspective rather than change the nature of their child. Focusing on attachment theory, and neuro-development, Heather has created the Infant Development Circle, a supportive workshop series that empowers mothers to enjoy and nurture their baby's development by exploring both what development looks like, and how to use secure attachment and curiosity to support it. Through this series, and through her one-on-one work, Heather provides maternal support for the role of mothering and brings attention to the nature of child development, and parent confidence.

Dr Orlena trained as a pediatric doctor in the UK. In 2011 she moved to Spain with her husband and 2 young kids. To cut a long story short, she "accidentally lost" her medical career and turned to the internet to keep herself busy (initially as an outlet from parenting.) She started off helping parents of picky eaters teach their children healthy eating habits. The loss of her career (or self identity) combined with parenting 4 young children (twins came along in 2012) led to an inner emotional turmoil. When she looked at herself, she didn't see the happy joyous mother she aspired to be. When her husband became unwell, she realized that they both needed to prioritize self care. In the last few years, she has pivoted to teaching frustrated professional mothers to lose weight by leading a healthy life so they can feel fit and fabulous. The 4 pillars of self care that she teaches are nutrition, exercise, sleep and emotional wellness. She draws from her own experiences (still walking the trenches of parenting!) as well as the latest scientific research and thinking.

The magic of breathing to help calm your child. Join me and Sasha Walsh for a fantastic conversation about adaptive yoga and the secret magic of breath work.

This episode is also available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/oiWbJOqoEfM

About Sasha Walsh
Sasha is an accessible yoga teacher working with special needs children. Sasha was born with a rare genetic disorder, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome – Hypermobility subtype (hEDS). This is a connective tissue disorder which causes all her joints to be extra mobile and dislocate easily. She is a RAD classically trained ballet dancer, who at 17 was told she had to stop dancing because of hEDS’s effects on her knees. At the age of 19 she was diagnosed with ADHD and generalized anxiety, while in first year University.
It wasn’t until her first pregnancy that she was introduced to yoga in a format that was safe and comfortable for her, and once she found that, she didn’t look back. She continues to use yoga to cope with her hypermobility, her pregnancies, and everyday life. When her son was welcomed into the world, they discovered he was within the Autism spectrum. Sasha found herself called to offer him, all special needs children and their caregivers the tools of yoga to help them find ways of coping with the overwhelming symptoms and behaviors. This was furthered when her daughter was diagnosed with hEDS and OI-Type 1 (brittle bone).
Since then Sasha has gone on to offer accessible yoga teacher training programs and parent workshops in the hopes of inspiring more people to offer these concepts to children and others differently abled.
Sasha is a Yoga Alliance Certified Teacher RYT® 500 specializing in Accessible Yoga for children. She serves in communities where people feel they are not able to participate in yoga classes and are missing out on the many benefits of this practice. She creates unique accessible yoga programs that are infused with different therapy styles, play and breath work.
Sasha has designed programs for private students & community classes with a focus on the students’ intentions and goals. She also offers inspiring Mentor Programs for yoga teachers who are interested or curious about bringing the art of yoga to underserved communities and special populations.

In this interview with Brooke Gordon she shares about journaling and other easy to put into practice mindfulness strategies.

Brooke Gordon has many roles she is also is also a certified Health Coach and Strategic Life Coach with a private coaching practice that serves to raise funds for the Soroptimist Dream programs through the sale of workshops and self-study programs, such as My Best Self: How to empower Your life and Looking Back: How to succeed in a busy world.

Three tips for your viewers:
My three tips are based on the framework I use for my coaching practice. I hope you find them helpful.

Meals: eat more greens is good advice, but not everyone likes salad. A trick I adapted from a Jamie Oliver recipe is to place a handful of field greens or arugula on the plate before serving a hot meal. The heat of the food will wilt the greens which is a softer texture and easier is easier to digest. They will get naturally mixed into the food so not everyone will notice. It's more convenient than having to make a separate salad - that's one of the reasons my spouse likes to add them!

Movement: our bodies need to move to fully function - from our blood to our bowels and all the systems in between. Schedule some movement into your day (literally! I book an appointment in my calendar every day) and have fun. Play fosters creativity and improvisation - ideal skills for a working Mom. Have your kids join you in a "shake your sillies out" session, or race to the bottom of the driveway to collect the garbage bins. Let them be your guide.

Mindset: no matter how busy we are, our bodies keep breathing. It takes just one breath to practice self-care. The concept is called a micro-mediation. It’s an amazing tool for those times when you don’t have time to stop. All it takes is one breath. Just two seconds.
