Slade Heathcott former 29th overall draft pick for the New York Yankees in 2009 joins us on the ZONE to discuss how he transformed living out of his truck in HS into getting drafted in the MLB. In this episode you will learn how Slade turned a moment when he hit walk off home run and thought about how he can share that moment with future players. He turned that moment into More Than Baseball, a non profit organization that focuses on helping Minor League Baseball players by providing resources during and after their careers. I enjoyed learning from her as we spoke about the difference in Mental health and performance and how younger athletes view therapy. We also discussed how COVID-19 has been impacting her athletes and the steps she has been taking to making sure they are cared for. You will gain knowledge about how she maintains efficiency in dealing with a high volume of athletes, how she practices her own self-care, how maintenance for mental health is vital to the success of an athlete and the mindset prior to entering a session without giving it a negative connotation for athletes are some of the things Dr. Coakley harped on in our discussion.

Our guest in this episode is Shane Southwell, former standout student-athlete at Kansas State and one of just eight basketball players in school history to help the Wildcats advance to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Southwell, a Harlem native, played professionally and is now assistant coach at Kansas State. He also earned a graduate degree in communication. We talked about making the transition from Manhattan,NY to Mnahattan,Kansas State, his journey from player to coach, and some of the struggles his student athletes grapple with today. We also discussed the coronavirus and how his players are handling their lost season while trying to maintain their physical and mental health. In Shane's young career as a coach he has already added 2x Big 12 championship, FIBA U19 Gold, and a 2020 NEC conference championship.

This Episode features two founders of the AAU Youth Basketball PSA Cardinals, Terrence “Munch” Williams and Andre Charles. We discuss the rise of their Nike sponsored Elite Youth Basketball (EYBL) program, and how competing in elite high school tournaments provides their teenage black athletes with a rare opportunity to escape severe socioeconomic circumstances and pursue a path to college and a better life. We spoke about the foundation their program provides for students to succeed in life after sports and how they have helped 71 players attain a basketball scholarship. They touched on how elite basketball players must be taught to maintain their identity throughout their careers and understand not only who they are, but also the business that they are in.
