Dr. Rubin not only focuses on chiropractic, but also helping others strive to live a healthy and positive lifestyle.
? Great book illustrating the issues that phones have caused our world and especially our youth. A new study further cements this problem in real time, showing that the younger a child starts on social media, the worse their school performance is!
adults with Autism level 3 are assumed to not understand directions simply because they don't follow them. Maybe it is a combination of apraxia and sensory processing disorder and we should presume competence EVEN IF that person cannot demonstrate it!
Chiropractic philosophy is deep with concepts of inside out healing potential. When you cut your finger, you need do nothing but clean (and maybe cover) the wound,...the body does all the work itself! That is a small example of the ADIO thinking
You take into account the child's nerve system before you decide what sort of adjustment you will do.
There is a neuro ring that surrounds the head that can be a ring of incredible sensory acuity or a ring of fire, depending on what's happening with that child or adult.
1 in 2! What does that mean? One in two kids in Australia have a chronic disease. If it's like that there, it's most likely similar in the USA. Wow!
Why so much tongue tie? Why are so many kids having issues nursing? Dr Rubin explains the chiropractic point of view
It's the same questions every time...but I am blessed to be able to answer them, to help guide the future chiropractors to be the best they can be!
How does brain-based chiropractic work? Here is a possible answer...silent synapses! There are these hidden mini-synapses in all of our brains (if it's in adults it's in kids too) that controls how our brains use neuroplasticity to rewire itself! scientists out there who are working to bring back extinct animal species. The big question I ask is not can you do this, but SHOULD you do this? We have people and kids suffering all over the world, yet this one company worth billions is working on bringing back the dodo bird? For what purpose?
Accumulative constructive survival value = chiropractic care, good nutrition, proper sleep and exercise. Accumulative destructive survival value = subluxations, poor nutrition, improper sleep, lack of exercise. As BJ Palmer would say, it is as simple as that!
is not a suggestion from BJ Palmer but a strong demand. What are we doing to guard chiropractic well in 2026? FYI---if you missed last week's track, it was recorded live at the ICPA Gathering.; so check out episode 665!
What's been your pivotal moments in your life? What's been the obstacles you had to face to get to where you are? Listen as Dr Rubin inspires over 400 ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) doctors and staff live from the 2026 ICPA Gathering!
What is your lollypop moment? What are the moments that make you stop in your tracks and say, 'wow'?
adults, are coming in diagnosed with EDS and/or POTS. These 2 disorders are part of a larger autoimmune issue that we are seeing globally.
Dr Palmer doesn't mention back pain or even the spine...he talks about how we are working on the nerve system which helps our innate intelligence work at 100%!
One of my favorite BJ Palmer 'stories' from my favorite Green Book, The Bigness of the Fellow Within, (1949), brings us back to chiropractic's roots. Come with Dr Rubin in a journey down the Green Book Lane episodes.
Pediatrics is disruptive! Especially chiropractic pediatrics...we are filling a niche that noone else fills, seeing kids that really need specialized care and attention. Honored to be serving the kiddos that we see.
Polyvagal and Prediction? At first, most people don't see how they fit, but Dr Rubin makes it seamless in how well these 2 theories work together, especially when dealing with children with Autism. This talk was presented to the World Chiropractic Congress of Students at Life University. (Please note: this is a secondary recording therefore the sound quality is slightly off. )
What a great question I was asked recently... What advice would you tell yourself 40 years ago? Wow...here's the answer and answers to many other common questions I get about life post-graduation.
Dr. Rubin introduces the concept of gentle Activator adjusting for pediatrics, especially applicable to little ones and kids with Autism
EDS or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, is something I have been seeing lots more of in the last 5 or so years, so wanted to create a brief overview of what it is and some of the other issues seen associated with EDS.
There are no words to describe how important and influential Dr. Guy Riekeman was on my life, my wife's life, to Life University, and to chiropractic as a whole. His passing marks the end of an era of visionary leadership that he spearheaded throughout his years in chiropractic. He sure is and will be missed.
the Polyvagal Theory Relate? Dr Rubin explains how pediatric chiropractors can use Polyvagal concepts with their neurodevelopmentally challenged children.
Six Sigma is a statistical way of looking at your productivity...and a great way to measure blocks and obstacles in your patient flow. Check this out to help improve the 'traffic patterns' in your office!
My beautiful wife of 35 years wows the January 2026 Dynamic Essentials with her talk, the Un-chiropractic story (she's has a PhD in Clinical Psychology but has worked at Life Univeristy since 2001 teaching chiropractors).
Liked the Webster's Infant Adjusting Protocols? Now here are some classic pediatric examination concepts!
In 1907, the chiropractic profession was only 12 years old, but a landmark case declared that chiropractic was 'separate and distinct' from allopathic/medical care. This changed the profession forever! Learn a little of the history right here!
Enjoy taking care of kids? Watching them improve, change, grow, mature, get calmer, healthier, happier? That's why we do what we do!
Webster protocols are famous around the world for prenatal care but did you know that Dr Webster had infant adjusting protocols too? Listen to a summary of Webster's concepts. More info? Check out: https://www.theadjustment.com/ or read our blog at: https://www.theadjustment.com/blog/chiroblog/
Developmental delays affect 16% of children born today in the US! Chiropractic care can be so helpful for them, whether it is early issues like rolling, crawling or walking difficulties, or later issues in preschool or elementary school, pediatric chiropractic can accelerate their nerve system's potential!
How did chiropractic become a separate and distinct form of healthcare in the eyes of the law? Dr Rubin describes the monumental court case from the early 1900's that paved the way. Want more info? Look here: https://www.theadjustment.com/
Every quarter we get questions, but this quarter was some of the best we've got in recent history. What is so fascinating is that these questions are for anyone about to graduate and go into the work force! The brain grows from the bottom-up, until top-down regulation can be acheived, according to Dr. Robert Melillo. At the same time as vertical growth is occurring, horizontal integration is happening, with the right brain having stronger growth in the first 2 years and the left brain having stronger growth in the 2nd two years.. Children with Autism sometimes may have puzzling behavior. The key to dealing with them is accepting it. For more information, click here: https://www.theadjustment.com/
When working with kiddos, it is best to be very accepting of their behaviors., and to understand what triggers them so that stimuli can be avoided or reduced.
We see amazing stories everyday in our pediatric, brain-based chiropractic practices. Yet so many of these amazing stories are just the brain and body working better together, the way they are supposed to!
hypermobility connected in people who are neurodivergent? One possible connector of these 3 seemingly disconnected pieces I believe to be the hypomobility of small joints of the spine (causing spinal misalignment or subluxation).
Obesity overtakes malnourishment for the first time in history in children. According to a recent article in The Economist, the amount of overweight and obese children is actually more than those who are underweight due to not getting enough food. And this is worldwide...not just in the wealthier nations. Wow...ultraprocessed food combined with sedentary lifestyles leads to poorer health outcomes. More info? We must be the disruptors, to change the world, getting more and more kids and pregnant moms adjusted. Recorded live at DE (Dynamic Essentials) in October 2025
There is a ring around everyone's head that controls so much of how a person functions in the world...starting with the eyes, then the ears/vestibular system, and then the back of the head or occiput, the seat of proprioception!
When adjusting kids, it is helpful to figure out where they are on the Polyvagal Ladder and then adjust accordingly.
Brain lateralization is so important to understand, especially when dealing with kids with any neurodevelopmental issues like ADHD and Autism.
Prediction is an extremely important way that our brains are using everyday in almost every situation. But what if our predictive abilities did not work as well. Listen on...
Insurance vs cash vs memberships? How to find the best place to associate? How do you build a brand new practice? These are just some of the great questions you'll hear answers to!
The Science of Scaling by Dr Benjamin Hardy is a great new book...it's kind of like Think and Grow Rich for the 21st Century. Check it out! And check out our website at https://www.theadjustment.com/ for more information
With a chapter in the Pediatric Chiropractic textbook about using Activator with kids, Dr Rubin now brings that information to you in a podcast format.
Want to learn more about retained primitive reflexes? Dr Rubin discusses the top 6 reflexes, how to assess them and then how to do remediation exercises for each one.
A balanced mind is one in which its traits lie more in a bell curve, whereas the unbalanced mind has traits that may look more like a cliff-edge. This imbalance creates potential issues in how the brain functions and may cause a maturational dysregulation (as Dr Melillo talks about), and that is where brain-based pediatric chiropractic fits in. To help the brain and body become more regulated. Here is the article: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/articles/201903/the-puzzle-the-unbalanced-mind
Neuroemotional technique or NET is a chiropractic technique that helps get rid of stuck emotions in your spine and along your nerve system, and has become an important part of my family-based, pediatric practice!
A boy was born with only 2% of his brain but by age 13, his brain had grown by 50%! This shows that with neuroplasticity, anything is possible. The true power of the nerve system and its healing potential is not really known yet... Here is the article: https://philarchive.org/archive/PERTBW
I am fortunate to have had great mentors in the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association), especially its founder, Dr Larry Webster, and the amazing Dr Jeanne Ohm. They among many others helped carve the path to a pediatric practice for 36+ years!
Fascinating new research classifies Autism into 4 main subtypes, and Dr Rubin explains how your approach to care with each subtype should be different.
Why is the brain asymmetric? What advantage does being dominant on 1 side or the other give the brain? Part 1 goes into the facts...part 2 (coming soon) will discuss how to use this info in your practices.
After almost 130 years, chiropractic is the leading alternative health care discipline in the US. What's our next move? The old saying, 'leave the place better than you found it" holds very true right now for those of us who have been around for 30+ years. Can we leave chiropractic better than we found it? Recorded live at the GCC event in 2017
This Inner Power Speaks, from BJ Palmer, can be used to explain chiropractic. It is just as effective today as it was when first published in 1949.
Retained primitive reflexes are critical to examine, especially in kiddos with neurodevelopmental challenges. Dr Rubin explains an efficient way to check for them.
Being trauma informed is so important in today's practice, since the amount of children who have experienced some sort of trauma is way more than is even being reported.
Every quarter we ask students who are about to graduate to write down their top questions that they want to ask someone who has been in practice for 36 years...and here are the answers!
A recent article stated that ADHD really isn't on the rise...it is because of increased awareness and better diagnosis. Really? Have they been in a pediatric chiiropractic office like mine recently?
Who am I? I asked myself that a lot as a recent graduate from 1989 - 1993. Who am I to be successful, to run a business, to be a chiropractor? My parents had barely graduated high school...how could I do all this? Then I heard Dr. Sid and everything changed...
What is your intent when you adjust your kiddos, parents, athletes? Your intention while you adjust is almost as important as the adjustment itself!
Please be careful about what you post on FB, Instagram etc. Make sure the pictures and videos that you post are not only going to serve your practice well but serve the profession too!
1 in 2 kids in Australia either have a chronic health condition or have a neuro-developmental issue. That means we pediatric chiropractors have a lot of work to do!
Back in 2022, the CDC released the changed developmental milestones with the rationale that the new milestones would be easier to understand and help in early intervention. It had the opposite affect...now they are less clear with more ambiguity and kids now have longer to reach milestones which delays early intervention!
Chirocast around the world begins today! Once a month (or so), we will post an interview with a former intern or an ICPA colleague from all across the globe, asking about the current status of chiropractic and especially pediatric/family based chiropractic. We have over 100 former interns and 10% of them are from outside the US, so am excited to share a global chiropractic perspective with you!
The CDC just released the latest prevalence rates for Autism, which was 1 in 36. It is now 1 in 31. Does that mean there are better ways to diagnose? Yes. Does that mean there are more people being diagnosed who before the DSM V came out would have been considered another diagnosis? Yes. But those 2 factors do not explain the total increase in prevalence.
To know one child with Autism is to know one child with Autism. Each person with Autism has their own unique 'language' and it is critical to learn their language quickly when you first meet them during your examination in order to create the best rapport with them possible.
History is so important, whether it is chiropractic history or any other genre. Why? Because there are valuable lessons to be learned from the trailblazers of the past. Modernized Chiropractic, the first textbook in chiropractic, gives us some amazing gems as we glimpse into the early days of the profession
Retained primitive reflexes (RPR's) are critical to test for in every child no matter what age or what condition they present with. RPR's indicate a nerve system that is not functioning optimally and remediation exercises can be very beneficial for kids.
Every quarter we get great questions regarding practice management submitted to us. It is so fun to answer looking back at a 36 year history and able to help chiropractors start their business or associateship right!
"The adjustment with that extra something" is a saying from BJ Palmer regarding how chiropractors either adjust their practice members as if its a job to do or they adjust them thinking about how far reaching a healthy spine & nerve system will take them!
What do you do to separate yourself from other docs and health providers in your area? BJ Palmer called it, "the adjustment with the extra something." Make yourself stand out!
Chiropractors are so fortunate to hear amazing stories every day! Listen to two typical examples of why being a pediatric, brain-based chiropractor is so rewarding!
"The Myth of Normal" is an incredible new book by Dr Gabor Mate, talking about what chiropractors have said for years...the US healthcare system is normalizing pathology!
Two of the most powerful forces on the planet, (not gravity, etc), are the power of fungi and the power of water. Fungi can take down a tree, water can carve the Grand Canyon...and they do this with incredible patience. They don't rush and expect immediate results like we do when waiting for a text back.
Modernized Chiropractic may have been the first chiropractic textbook (published in 1906), but it had some very forward thinking ideas. My 2 favorites are the importance of the chiropractic adjusting thrust coupled with the concept of spontaneity. In this case, spontaneity doesn't mean impulsive or without stimulus; rather it is a way to describe how the body can change course towards health!
Everywhere I look, the term Polyvagal is there! It is amazing how many people are talking about it, whether on social media, in journals, news articles...it's all over! And I'm so glad since it is one of the key elements in a successful pediatric practice.
Reading an interesting book called, Autism and the Predictive Brain. The author fascinatingly discusses how the brain really creates responses through prediction rather than only through sensory information that is incoming. Dr Rubin then discusses how the predictive brain theory interplays with letterboarding in children with Autism.
Why do we do what we do? What is the philosophy and intent behind every adjustment? That is what our practice members truly sense and feel and connect with during each adjustment.
Becoming trauma informed is not just a buzzword or a fad. So many children and adults have had some sort of trauma in their life. During the taking of the practice member's case history, and then during your examination and subsequent adjustment procedures, being trauma informed is an essential tool.
"Functionating" and "Neuroskeleton" are 2 of my favorite words from DD Palmer's 1914 posthumously published book called The Chiropractor. They talk about the essence of what it means to be a neuro based, brain based chiropractor over 110 years ago! Let's get back to the basics!
Dr Sid had these amazing sayings that he would drop on you at every DE meeting or assembly at Life University. Here are a few of my favorites...
Evolution...is that what humanity is doing? Or are we de-evolving? Using research and journal articles as background, Dr Rubin talks about what some are calling De-evolution. Originally presented at the ICPA 2018 Conference.
'Why', 'how', & 'what' are usually the start to the questions soon-to-be graduating students ask regarding their impending futures. The key concept: there are no mistakes. Every choice you make in business (that is legal and honest) is the right one...you can always move, change from being a sports chiropractor to being a pediatric chiropractor, switch practices you are associating in. There are no mistakes, just lessons to be learned from.
Social media isn't social at all. A better name would be, "Antisocial Media" since the anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide rates have skyrocketed since the supposed social media started with MySpace in 2003 and Facebook in 2004. Listen to the stats and you'll have no choice but to agree...social media is hurting our kids, especially our tweens and teens
Pediatric Chiropractic is a disruptive force in health care. Watching the US health care system since 2020 literally prove to world how unprepared it is to really improve the health of our country, it is time to do something different...and chiropractic IS that something different. Recorded in 2022 at a SABCA meeting.
One of my favorite books is "The Brain That Changes Itself" by Dr. Norman Doidge. It taught me about the importance of neuroplasticity, how the brain really does have an ability to change itself WITH THE RIGHT INPUT! Chiropractic and functional neurology are great input for the nerve system. Originally posted in 2017.
The nerve system is like a tree; the roots are the brain of the tree, the trunk like the spinal cord, and the branches and leaves like the peripheral nerve system. BJ Palmer was the original brain-based chiropractor, since he was writing this style of thought (or as he would have written, thot), way back in 1910.
Even from 1906, BJ Palmer defined chiropractic as brain and nerve system based, with expectations of working with "all...of the three hundred articulations of the human skeletal frame." Chiropractic and chiropractors are not limited to the spine but use the spine as home base while we 'tune' the nerve system. Listen to this interpretation of BJ Palmer's Science of Chiropractic Volume I
Chiropractic is based on the combination of philosophy, science and art. DD and BJ Palmer's textbooks, commonly known as Green books, are chiropractic's foundation. Each of the 39+ books reflect one or more of the concepts, so Chirocast will spend the next year or so reading brief passages from each book to give you a flavor of chiropractic's relationship with its roots: The Green Books
In 2022, the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics changed the developmental milestone list, effectively removing crawling and changing many milestone timelines such as increasing time allowed for walking and talking.
The Polyvagal Theory really took the world 'by storm' over the last few years. I first heard it mentioned at an ICPA seminar in 2010 or so, and published the first ever chiropractic and polyvagal paper a few years later (http://bit.ly/2yxfNxN). Now it is everywhere and most parents of kiddos with Autism have heard of it. Originally released in 2023, recorded live at The Wave at Life West.
Fascinating article that came out a few months ago regarding how emotional regulation and proprioception are related bidirectionally...in other words, your emotions and your body awareness are linked in both directions. Here is the article: https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rstb.2023.0247
There's that famous Marianne Williamson quote that starts off by stating: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure." Wow...I first heard that back in the 1990's and it still resonates with me today. Posted originally in 2015
What's your why? Why are you doing what you are doing? What is the big picture behind your going to work everyday? My why is the kids. How can we help more and more kids...because if we help kids then we change the future...and we change the present since we are helping the parents and the rest of the family too! This podcast was originally posted in 2015.
Every quarter a question is posed: what is the single most important question you have regarding starting a practice? Whether you are starting you own, buying an existing practice, or jumping into an associate job, these are the questions being asked.
Tongue tie practically dropped on the scene around 2005 or so and has been a bundle of confusion since. Here is a more chiro-centric approach to this issue
In 2014, a Life University student approached me after class and said "You should post some of your talks on a podcast!" I looked at them puzzled and asked, "What's a podcast?" 10 years and almost 600 episodes in, I thought it fitting to repost the first Chirocast podcast. Enjoy!
There is a different speed of the delivery of health. The nerve system delivers its messages almost instantly, whereas the circulatory system takes longer. This creates potential delays in the way health can be expressed. Chiropractic helps provide detours for these delays.
Coordination is what chiropractic adjustments improve upon, especially when applied consistently and in conjunction with neurological exercises. A healthier, stronger body is more coordinated...all its pieces are working in harmony. Newton's law of motion vs inertia is also applicable with improved coordination.
The word momentum is not just for physics...it can also apply to your health. What is the trajectory of the momentum of your health look like? Are you moving towards health or towards sickness and what BJ Palmer and Ralph Stephenson called dis-ease?
Five lessons learned early on in practice still teach me to this day, especially the concept of being 'wowed' every time something amazing happens, which it does so regularly that you can become a little less 'wowed'. This is a replay from 2018, a Life U graduation speech. Here's another wow...this was the 200th episode posted, today's is 574! WOW!
Two recent articles talked about how Alzheimer's responds to lifestyle changes. That is an amazing breakthrough on the one hand, but on the other hand, doesn't it make sense that someone with any neurologic issue, from Autism to Alzheimer's, would improve if they ate better, exercised more, and did stress-reduction protocols? Wouldn't we all be healthier with those lifestyle improvements? Here are the 2 articles:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11157928/https://alzres.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13195-024-01482-z
How do chiropractors work with kids on the Spectrum? How does ABA Therapy works with kiddos with Autism? Can the 2 professions work together to get better results? Listen in to the conversation...
According to BJ Palmer, the son of the founder of chiropractic, DD Palmer, took health "out of the realms of the accidental field and put the doing into an intentional field." Did DD Palmer realize how big the thing was that he was doing? Probably not at that moment...but now chiropractic is international!
There is a great website called the Big History Project (https://bhp-public.oerproject.com/) that puts billions of years of history of the universe into bite sized chunks (including an 18 minute TED talk). During this presentation, Dr Rubin discusses Big History as it relates to chiropractic (originally posted in 2014).
Ever wonder how modern dentistry has become one of the most prestigious in the health care industry after its very humble beginnings? In the 1950's, dentists were pulling teeth in dingy offices. Then they organized and created a plan, and worked that plan, and now look at them! What is chiropractic's plan? Good question... This podcast was originally aired in 2015.
Chiropractic is a philosophy, science and art. All 3 are critical in becoming the best chiropractor for whatever practice members you see. Its philosophy, science and art are like a 3 legged stool...if you take one leg off, the stool cannot support your weight.
Back in July of 1993, I went to Dynamic Essentials (or DE) as a chiropractor and left as a chiropractic warrior with a major purpose. Here how 1 simple sentence that Dr Sid said during his Thursday opening altered the direction of my life
The concept of accumulative constructive and destructive survival value can be likened to making deposits or withdrawals with a bank account. Put deposits in, and you build accumulative constructive survival value. The more deposits you put into your health bank account, the greater your resilience when a withdrawal comes your way.
School does a good job at preparing you to pass National Exams and get licensed, but can't prepare you for every possibility. Here Dr Rubin answers questions about starting a peds-focused practice and about what to look for if deciding on an associate job.
ADHD rates are now at 11.4% (that's 7.1 million kiddos), an extra 1 million kiddos compared to 2016 (see attached link for article). Infants as young as 6 weeks old can have characteristics that might lead to an autism diagnosis (see link). Chiropractors work on the brain and nerve system. The earlier we get a chance to work on kiddos, the better! Change trajectories! Time IS of the essence!ADHD article: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15374416.2024.2335625Autism article: https://www.nature.com/articles/s42003-024-06016-9
"Stay put", BJ Palmer tells us. "The difference between a big shot & a little shot is that the big shot is a little shot that kept on shooting" (Zig Ziglar). Sometimes in order to solve a problem, the key in the solution is to keep on trying different things until you figure it out. This can be helpful when you are working with kids with Autism who are minimally speaking. Each child has their own 'language', and it will take time to learn how they prefer to communicate.
In 2 recent articles, (see links below), a 'new role of chiropractic' was introduced, that boils down to this: chiropractors should essentially 'stay in their lane' and adjust only people with back pain "without extending their services to other more controversial clinical areas." Hmm. The results we see in pediatric chiropractic care tend to totally refute their idea. I think I'll stick with my current role in chiropractic! Here are the 2 articles...Part 1: https://chiromt.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12998-024-00531-6, Part 2: https://chiromt.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12998-024-00532-5
The Polyvagal Theory has revolutionized my practice and at a recent seminar in Atlanta, I shared my latest thoughts and breakthroughs about it. Can't think of a health-related topic where the Polyvagal Theory doesn't in some way apply!
How else will people find out about chiropractic unless and until we tell them what we do? Chiropractic is still the best kept secret in the health care world but more and more people are turning towards chiropractic since the modern health care system has proven itself to be less...reliable.
A 2024 article called "A new role for spinal manual therapy" (see link) said that we should not provide SMT to anyone except for people with musculoskelatal issues (MSK), since it is unproven, unscientific, and controversial. Tell that to the millions of kiddos that are being seen around the world by pediatric chiropractors and have received amazing benefit! Here is the article:https://chiromt.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12998-024-00531-6
Dr Sid Williams, founder of Life University and Dynamic Essentials (DE), had an amazing way to explain chiropractic philosophy, and how to live and practice by it. "Bring Us Your Most Difficult Cases" and "Accept all cases regardless of condition or financial ability" are 2 pivotal concepts.
Are you holding onto your vision or focusing on the illusions others have of your vision? M Scott Peck says: Life is difficult...and the sooner you accept the life is difficult, life is less difficult. Life happens, but do everything you can to focus on your vision
Our Eclipse party was so fun, not just because we saw a rare astronomical treat, but because we are part of millions of people from around the country, all doing the same thing at the same time! And watching our younger patients who didn't know each other come together and become friends while watching an eclipse was a special moment that reminded me of BJ Palmer's: That Something!
How is the goal of chiropractic communication? By allowing the brain and the body to communicate better with each other, creating body awareness, allowing the sensory system to work with and not against the motor system. This is especially true for kids and adults with sensory/motor challenges.
Green Book Series Part 1: Dissecting the best of BJ Palmer's chiropractic philosophy stored in the treasure of his 41 volume Green Book collection. This week's topic is from Bigness of the Fellow Within, page 613: An Afterthought. It is one of the most profound messages referencing the 'why' of chiropractic, what BJ aptly titled, "The Big Idea"
So many lessons are learned along the way when you open a practice. What would you have done differently? What did you wish you knew then that you know now? That is the theme of the questions.
Years ago, before concussion was a more commonly seen diagnosis, a person either had a concussion or they didn't. Now we know that there are 6 types of concussion (see link below), that can affect people in multiple different ways with multiple permutations of effects. (https://www.upmc.com/services/sports-medicine/services/concussion/symptoms-diagnosis/types)
Want to improve your patient flow? Improve their satisfaction? The concepts of Six Sigma can be used to measure your office processes and procedures from an efficiency point of view. Six Sigma ideas can help reduce wait time by finding the time-wasters and blockages, then eliminating them.
Chiropractic changed in 1907 from a 'start-up' to a contender through the Morikubo case. A young recent grad from Palmer Chiropractic College was jailed in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, accused of 'practicing medicine without a license.' BJ Palmer and his new attorney's came up with the 'Separate and distinct' defense, proving that chiropractic is not medicine and masterminding the first chiropractic victory, thereby paving the way for chiropractic's future.
Recorded at the 2023 TACA conference, (The Autism Community in Action), the practical use of the Polyvagal Theory is explained including how to determine where your child is on the Polyvagal Scale and how to build trust with a child on the Autism spectrum. Posted with permission by TACA (https://tacanow.org/).
ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed mental health issue in children in the US. What are the best questions to ask and tests to perform to see what an underlying challenge might be (retained primitive reflexes, eye issues, etc)?
Retained primitive reflexes are essential to look for in pediatrics and especially in kids with neurodevelopmental issues like Autism. Dr Rubin describes how to find 4 common retained primitive reflexes and gives exercises to remediate them.
Developmental delay prevalence has risen from 4% to 6% and the CDC concludes that 1 in 6 kids has a developmental issue! We are seeing more and more kids with unevenness of skills, often indicating that one side of the brain is more developed than the other side of the brain. Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the ICPA, gave the profession so much...the Webster technique, the infant toggle headpiece, and many pediatric adaptations to traditional adjustments. Dr Rubin was a student of his and here presents and interprets 3 of his favorite 'Webster-isms'.
How are you living your life? Easy Hard means making choices that are easy now but create difficulty later. Hard Easy equals taking 'the road less traveled' now, but by putting in the time, energy and effort today, you are rewarded later with an easier life.
Your philosophy determines your success. Whether you are a chiropractor or chiropractic student, or anybody else for that matter, what is your 'set of the sail.' We have been given an opportunity to serve...how do you take care of this opportunity? "Your attitude determines your altitude..."
Where is your mission trip? There are so many places around the world that need help. But there is one place that you can make the most impact because you are there most of the time...your office or your school! That can be your mission trip too!
After the holidays, so many people talk about going on a diet. Michael Beckwith suggests something 1 step further... how about starting a worry-free diet. Are you eating 'grateful fruit' every day? Stop ingesting negativity and plan on a better 2024!
How do we build resilience? How do we decrease vulnerability? Especially in our kids? Number one suggestion: get their nerve systems right through chiropractic adjustments. Combined with neurologically based exercises, you can improve kids (and anyone's) resilience! Originally recorded in 2018.
What do you do get new patients when you first open up? Where is the best place to practice? Why do you need a chiropractic assistant even when you are a new practitioner? How do you run a cash practice? These are some of the questions answered during the quarterly questions episode of Chirocast!
When you look at research articles through a chiropractic lens, you 'read between the lines.' You see things from a different vantage point. When the research says sub-concussive forces are changing the brains of kids, I wonder how many kids are getting adjusted? If the research says that life expectancy has dropped in the US, my thought is: what is the percentage of people in the US utilizing chiropractic?
Aside from mentioning the words chiropractic and chiropractor, BJ Palmer does not talk about the spine, subluxations or adjustments in this famous quotation. Its focus is on 'impulse', 'force' & 'power'...the nerve system. His father (DD Palmer) said chiropractic is 'founded on tone'. It's all about the nerve system, ever since the start of chiropractic in 1895! (Chapter from BJ Palmer's 'Bigness of the Fellow Within', 1949.
Newton's laws are relevant to so many topics. In this talk, Dr Rubin is talking to the NY Chiropractic Council about Newton's 1st law (bodies in motion and at rest) and 3rd law (equal and opposite reactions) and how they are so applicable and parallel to what a chiropractic adjustment does. Read an interesting twist regarding Newton's laws here:https://www.behavioraleconomics.com/the-three-laws-of-human-behavior/
"You never know how far reaching something you may think say or do will affect the lives of millions tomorrow." When I was in college, I worked at a home for the developmentally disabled because a friend of mine knew I needed a job and she worked there. It was an unexpectedly amazing experience, and that paved the way for me now taking care of so many kids with developmental issues! You never know!!!
"What to do about your brain-injured child" is one of my top 3 books that should be required reading for any pediatric chiropractor. Most health care providers work on the highest level of challenged function but this book teaches you to find the lowest level of brain issue and work from there. This concept was revolutionary in my practice! Originally recorded for Chirosecure
Look inside an acorn. What do you find? A miniature oak tree? Actually, you find what looks sort of like dust and an egg yolk. Somehow that stuff knows how to turn into a 100 foot tree, IF (and it's a big IF), all the right stuff happens. Isn't that the same with each one of us? What lessons can we learn from an acorn?
The concept of "maturational dysregulation" as discussed in one of Dr. Robert Melillo's 2022 paper (see link below) explains how kids with ADHD have issues with common findings such as impulsivity, inattention and hyperactivity. The brain matures from the bottom-up, and then top-down regulation occurs...but if the bottom-up maturity isn't complete, then issues like impulsivity, inattention and hyperactivity are more likely. See article here: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnana.2022.936025/full
Kids are generally ignored in most doctor's offices except for someone doing something to them. How do we really reach kids? By paying attention to them. By making them feel special and important. By not judging them. By making them feel loved!
The rise in Autism has created a huge demand for pediatric chiropractors around the world who are trained in how to take care of kids on the spectrum. Webster said, "taking care of kids is not like taking care of little adults"...I will add to that "taking care of kids with Autism is not like taking care of a neurotypical child."
What is the most important item in an associate contract? How do you know where to practice? How do you get new patients in the door when you first start as an associate? These are some of the questions asked by soon to be chiropractors...
Two recent non-chirorpractic science articles that I read are both 'evidence-based' but the big question in my mind is not the 'evidence.' Rather it is the understanding of the concept: science can do something, but SHOULD they? Should they create brain organelles? Should they teach neurons to do tasks? Yes... science now has the technology to do so, but at what future cost?
Some things never change. What lessons can we learn from that concept? The climate crisis didn't really start in the 1900's but with the beginnings of 'modern civilization' and the creation of cities. It accelerated with the rampant use of fossil fuel but it's been going on for centuries!
Jimmy Buffett, one of my favorite musicians and a legend in the music industry, passed away recently. Always been amazed by Jimmy Buffett's incredible ability to create something out of an idea. Imagine all the brain power behind taking 1 hit song, Margaritaville, and literally turning it into a mega-business worth $1 Billion! He turned his business into a brand, something chiropractic needs to learn! Hope you are having 'cheeseburgers in paradise', Jimmy!
The Polyvagal Theory is critical to learn and understand especially in a pediatric based practice. It is about setting up a zone of safety and then basing your examination and adjustment technique on where they fall on the Polyvagal Scale.
"With it, nations rise. Without it, nations fall. This is the biggest idea I know of." So wrote BJ Palmer in his 1949 text, 'The BIgness of the Fellow Within', one of the famed 'Green Books.' Even though its called 'chiropractic philosophy', it is really more than that...it is vitalistic, it is about living life to the fullest because you have and live by a philosophy!
A rainbow. Stars in the night sky. A sunrise or sunset. How many of us sprint through the day and forget to look up or look around us? One author calls it "Nature Deficit Disorder." Are we so fixated on moving fast that we forget that there are moments of awe and wonder all around us?
Part of my mission is to help more children & adults with Autism, and the best way to spread this message is to promote a different way of understanding how their brains work. That is where the Polyvagal Theory comes in.
The Wave 2023 at Life West had a huge turnout, standing room only, for an incredible weekend. Dr Rubin spoke Friday afternoon about "Polyvagaling Pediatric Chiropractic", giving the chiropractors and chiropractic students concepts on how to apply the Polyvagal Theory in practice.
Guest speaker Dr. Amanda Blonigen talks about how to use the concept of the triune brain in determining what sort of adjustments to use on each individual child. She is the co-creator of On-Site Chiropractic, helping chiropractors work with kids within school systems. Find out more about On-Site Chiropractic here: https://www.on-sitechiropractic.com/
Dr. Dick Santo helped me years ago by challenging what I thought it meant to look, act and speak like a chiropractor!
Life always happens. No matter what you do, stuff is going to happen. It's what you do after that counts. Can you 'take a lemon and make a lemonade'? Can you take what might be a challenge and turn it into an opportunity? The key is: can you pivot?
Want a pediatric exam that is adds functional neurology to chiropractic analysis? And that gives you information not only for your assessment but also for home exercise recommendations? Dr Rubin describes a brief but information rich exam procedure in this podcast originally posted in August 2022 and was last year's most listened-to episode.
There's been a lot of talk lately about the CDC's 2022 changes to the developmental milestones. Crawling is still a milestone whether it was removed from their list or not! Walking and talking generally start around 12 months of age not 15 or 18 months of age! This podcast was recorded live at the 2022 ICPA Gathering and was previously posted in August 2022
Salutogenesis is one of my favorite words to describe what chiropractic does for those humans who receive it. Whereas pathogenesis looks at how disease occurs, salutogenesis focuses on how health occurs, and chiropractic adjustments (as BJ Palmer said) "add life to years and years to life!"
Every quarter I get questions about business but this quarter had some very far-reaching ones!
There is so much more going on than we can possibly understand in how our bodies actually work. There are "critical windows" during development that are so sensitive. During these critical periods, if there is any sort of epigenetic disturbance, it can lead down the line to disrupted neurodevelopment which in turn can totally alter the course of that person's life. For more information, check out our website: https://www.theadjustment.com/ Links to the articles here: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/10738584231176233 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK578299/figure/ch3.fig1/
In the late '90's, scientists cloned a sheep. Today they are creating multicellular organisms out of 1 celled organisms, and have figured out a way to take any cell in the body and make it into a 'gamete' cell that can create new life (in vitro gametogenesis). Sounds like what used to be called science fiction is turning into science fact, and although the concept is to 'revolutionize fertility', my concerns are the moral and ethical considerations of such experimentation.Articles: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06052-1, https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/04/24/the-future-of-fertility, https://www.nature.com/articles/s41587-022-01592-9
Social media is here to stay. Are there benefits? Sure...but there are costs, huge costs, especially to the mental health of our kids. It's too late to truly regulate Facebook, Instagram, TikTok. We can try as parents to minimize use of these platforms, but ultimately, the one factor that we as chiropractors can do is to make sure that their brain-body connection is as strong and healthy as possible!
Two articles about Autism were published recently that seemingly contradict each other. One says profound Autism is on the rise. The other says that in Autism we have an 'epidemic of diagnosis' which the author calls 'progress.' Taking care of kids on the spectrum for over 30 years, there is NO DOUBT in my mind that there has been a huge increase in the number of kids with Autism, and it is NOT just a case of better diagnostics! https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00333549231163551Article about 'Profound Autism'https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2804698Article about Autism & Progress in Diagnosis
What is your intention? Are you manifesting your dream practice? What does it look like? Feel like? Take pictures of your practice members (especially the kids)...not just posed pictures but that show how much fun the kids are having while in your office. Recorded live at ICPA Connect Atlanta on Saturday, May 13th, 2023.
Is humanity in the process of de-evolving? Evolution in theory shows humanity's ascending from agricultural revolution to industrial to informational ages...but what is happening now? Maybe we are de-evolving to re-evolve? This episode aired also as a Chirosecure webinar.
A recent article in the journal Nature had an obtuse title but profound impact, "A somato-cognitive action network alternates with effector regions in motor cortex." Translation: the homunculus that was 'discovered' in 1948 actually was an inaccurate description! Really? So we don't REALLY know everything about how the human body works? No surprise there! Just like The Polyvagal Theory has upended what we thought of as the Vagus nerve, research shows that we still have a lot to learn!
The US health situation is in a precarious position. We are the only country in the top industrialized countries in the world to have a further decrease in life expectancy in 2021! Every other major player has rebounded except the US. More info, click here: https://www.theadjustment.com/Here is the link to the article: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24006554/
The statistics are in. 1 in 36 kids have Autism, up 800% in the last 20 years. 1 in 5 children have a mental health disorder. But it's not just in kids. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's have skyrocketed during this same time too! What's wrong with our brains? Originally aired as a webinar for Chirosecure. More info? Check out our website at https://www.theadjustment.com/ or our blog at https://www.theadjustment.com/blog/chiroblog/
Chiropractic adjusting technique as it is taught is based mostly on the sense of touch. Maybe we can learn to use more than just the tactile sensation of our hands, by learning to 'listen' with our hands, with our eyes, with our ears, and with our hearts. This is how I suggest to better serve the kiddos who are minimally speaking, either because they are infants(pre-verbal) or because they are on the spectrum. Recording at Spizz Night hosted by Chuck Ribley
Be relentless. Like the moss that is devouring a tree that has fallen, one molecule at a time. The moss doesn't think, "this tree is too big. We can never do this." It may takes months or even years but that tree will be 100% fertilizer in 'X' amount of time...whatever time it takes, the moss will accomplish its goal. How about you?Want more info? Check out https://www.theadjustment.com/ or read our blog at https://www.theadjustment.com/blog/chiroblog/.
Every quarter there are questions...questions about 'where do we start, what should be in a contract, how do we hire staff, how do we attract new patients, what is the biggest mistake you made early on in practice." Here are some answers...
My wife and I years ago sat in a restaurant and wrote down our goals, dreams and ambitions on a napkin. We have met or exceeded all of those goals and then some. It makes a difference when you actually write them with a pen rather than typing them on a device. What's your napkin moment?
"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space lies our freedom and our power to choose." What is the stimulus? And more importantly, before the response, there exists a space and what you do with that space decides your future! Because in that space you make a choice and your choices accumulated over time equal your life! Quote from Victor Frankl, read in Stephen Covey's phenomenal book: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
"Life is difficult...but when you accept the fact that life is difficult, life becomes easier." Chiropractic helps make life the best it can be, within its limitations. Life isn't easy, but our goal is to make life just a little bit better for each practice member, each time we see them.
A recent article states that if labor is induced, those children have lower school performance at age 12! In Australia the article reports that a shocking 36% of labors are induced (in the US the stats are 25%). What does this mean? That there are always unintended side effects to any intervention! Article link here: https://obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/aogs.14520
Health care in the US is not about 'health' nor is it about 'care.' It often is about what gets paid by insurance. Chiropractic has a unique opportunity to truly be about healthcare, educating our practice members that health comes from within, that health takes time, that health is an inside job.
Gravity is ever present and in a recent journal article, it mentioned how gravity might be the cause of certain GI related issues such as Irritable Bowel. Ultimately what this means is that the brain and nerve system are unable to accommodate gravity's ever-present 'caudal pull' and dysfunction occurs. The dysfunction is in the brain and nerve system but its effects are noticed at the GI level. Hmm...Article found here: https://journals.lww.com/ajg/fulltext/2022/12000/gravity_and_the_gut__a_hypothesis_of_irritable.15.aspx
Chiropractic gives kids hope! It gives parents hope! Most health related offices base their services on fear...we base chiropractic care on possibilities! Our offices are like an oasis in a desert of negativity and fear. Hope, possibilities, potential...that is the 'lasting purpose' philosophy.
What do you do when a child for whatever reason is unable to go face down on an adjusting bench? You adapt your technique to the child. Adapting to them vs making them do it 'your way' is imperative for building trust, especially among neurodivergent children.
There is no competition if your build yourself a niche practice. If your 'jam' is pediatrics, and your focus is on optimizing brain and nerve function, your brand is unique, different, special. There is so much competition in back pain. Stand out! Adjust more kiddos!
What can someone do to prepare themselves for the most difficult pediatric cases? Learn as much as you can, become a sponge, reading articles & books about pediatrics, the brain and nerve system, immersing yourself in places & with people who are doing what you want to do, and go to seminars like the ICPA seminars that make you an authority in your community.
Why pediatric chiropractic? We've got to disrupt how chiropractors take care of kids, and why! Kids are our future, and if we don't focus on the kids, who is going to?
Ever cut open an acorn? Is a little tree inside of it? No...it's just a bunch of tree dust! But that dust knows just what to do, IF given the right food and soil and sunshine and rain. Isn't that like all of us? We have everything we need inside of us...we have the potential to grow into a mighty oak tree. Introduction by Dr. Chuck Ribley
There are so many things to consider when starting a pediatric practice. Dr Rubin answers many of the common questions that you might be thinking about creating that practice of your dreams from locations and contracts to financing and getting new patients in the door!
A recent article in The Atlantic magazine mentioned that researchers think by 2025 we will see a lot more pediatric obesity & asthma. My prediction is that we will also see more learning disorders, Autism & ADHD. Why? Due in part because of the isolation of the 'Covid-babies' born late 2019-2021, and the massive increase in 'world-stress' since the start of the pandemic. See article here: https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2022/12/pandemic-hygiene-kids-microbiome/672362/
Walking through a forest, you see the entire circle of life all around you. If a tree has an obstacle in it's growth, it just grows around it. Trees use patience and discipline for their success...something we can learn from!
The Polyvagal Theory has revolutionized the way I think and practice regarding pediatrics. Safety first has become our motto...not just in having all the outlets covered but in making sure that our neurodivergent kids feel safe as our top priority, since that is the key component of their potentially malfunctioning ventral vagus nerve. Want to learn more? Dr Rubin did a seminar with Dr Stephen Porges and it is available here: https://bit.ly/34X5MOk
An adult had leg pain and was given a CT scan of their brain. It turns out that this person was missing large portions of their brain due to hydrocephalus that they had as a child, that worsened after they had a shunt removed during their teenage years! Yet through the power of neuroplasticity, they were able to use the brains that they did have to lead an otherwise healthy life. What does that mean? That anything is possible with the right neuroplastic combination! Article here: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(07)61127-1/fulltext
In the 1960's, those born as females were hitting normally reaching puberty at around age 11. By 1997 that had shifted to 10 years old, and now puberty is defined as normal if it occurs between ages 8 & 13. Early onset puberty is potentially being driven by stress, increase in endocrine disrupting chemicals, body-mass index(BMI). According to recent research, poor sleeping habits also contribute to this due to less melatonin which comes from a massive increase in screen time! Article here: https://www.newyorker.com/science/annals-of-medicine/why-more-and-more-girls-are-hitting-puberty-early
I see everything through a chiropractic lens. While reading a book, "Slouching Towards Utopia" by economist by J Bradford Delong, I was struck by the chiropractic parallels, even though chiropractic is not mentioned at all. Apparently there is a long twentieth century in economic-speak (1870-2010) in which world economic growth was unprecedented. My thought: How about the "long chiropractic century", 1985-2020? Listen on for more details...
Why isn't chiropractic the obvious first choice in health care? A momma who just had a successful VBAC after having chiropractic care most of her pregnancy said, "I don't know why every pregnant momma isn't getting adjusted!" A new momma recently brought her baby in because she said "I heard that chiropractic care is good for alignment and proper functioning." Wow!
Awaken to the reason you wanted to become a chiropractor in the first place. Seek the best information you can find on what you want to focus on. Find that source and learn everything you can from it. Control that new information by taking massive action. That is how your life can have 'that extra something.' Title quote from "The Bigness of the Fellow Within" by BJ Palmer, 1949, the Story of That Something.
Keeping it simple doesn't seem oversimplifying. Rather we see that practice members like detailed understanding of what's going on with them or their children. The concept of simple doesn't mean easy either. Simple means clear, focused, concise, transparent, telling it like it is. People appreciate that in today's overly stressed-out society.
Chiropractors are brain and nerve system specialists. No matter how we practice, whether we are pediatric or geriatric DC's, focus on kids or PI or seniors or athletes, chiropractic changes the brain first! The spine might be the conduit, the way we enter the nerve system, but it's not the last step. It's just our way in!
Functional neurology is the basis of a solid pediatric chiropractic exam. We are not only looking at spine, posture, shoulder & hip height or anterior head carry. We are looking at the child's brain through simple neuro exams that tell us how well that child is connected or disconnected.
Questions haven't really changed over the years. "What are the most important points in a contract?" "How do you find a place to settle?" "How do you know if an office is right for you?" The salient point that runs through all this can be answered with a Zen-like statement: "When it seems right and it goes smooth, you'll know."
Patagonia, valued at $1 Billion, just sold the company, but instead of selling to a person or a group, they sold Patagonia to a 'trust', whose intent is to help save the planet! WOW! Instead of selling for a profit, they sold for a purpose. Now that's commitment!
When someone's been getting adjusted their whole life, they naturally think that everyone gets adjusted. It's so embedded in their lifestyle that it's what they do! It's part of their health habits like exercising and eating right. Do you have kids like this in your practice, who are being raised as chiro-kids?
BJ Palmer asked years ago, "which side of the yellow line are you on?", referring to the double yellow line on a highway. The term diagnosis means "between 2 possibilities." What are you thinking when you examine a child or pregnant momma for the first time? Which side of the line are you on?
A patient said to me a few days ago, "you have the dream job, having all these kids around you all day long." They were right...there is nothing that brings me more joy than looking in an infant, toddler, child on the spectrum, or a pregnant momma's eyes, and seeing the gratitude. How thankful I am that chiropractic found me and that Dr Larry Webster turned me in the right direction!
There is a sense of urgency that exists when you feel that if you fulfill your mission, no-one else will. That was the message delivered to a packed house at the 2022 ICPA Gathering, where pediatric chiropractors from around North America came together with one common purpose...taking care of the kids and pregnant mommas that we have been chosen to serve.
There are actual brain changes in kids with ADHD, according to recent research. This has also been seen in kids with Autism. Why is this so important? Because if there are brain changes, through the power of neuroplasticity, brain-based chiropractic can help rewire their nerve system! Article: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41380-022-01706-4
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure..." begins the quote from Marianne Williamson. With our hearts, head and hands, we chiropractors can do incredible work, help change lives, redirect brains that are firing less than efficiently, and reconnect the disconnected kids.
How are you describing chiropractic care? If you are talking about how practice members are feeling vs how they are healing, then you have a more pain-based vs. brain-based chiropractic focus. Chiropractic was originally 'founded on tone' (DD Palmer, 1910) and then added the concept of dis-ease, or disharmony/dysfunction of the nerve system (BJ Palmer & Ralph Stephenson, 1927). Our founders had 'the big idea'!
"When you know your why, you can endure almost any how" is a saying attributed to Victor Frankl (author of Man's Search for Meaning). Having that why we do behind our what we do makes a difference not just in the day-to-day but in the overall outcome. Find your why!
It's not about how much you do, but how little you actually need to do to create positive change. "A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step." Sometimes we confuse quantity for quality. Does "super-sizing" mean better quality, or more of what is not good to begin with? Do less not more, especially when working with neurodivergent kids.
A 12 year old patient recently told me of an assignment from their literature class: find a poem and tell us what it means. This pre-teen choose the poem: "Mutterings over the crib of a child" by James Wright from the 1950's. It is about a parent taking care of a neurodivergent, special needs child, and how they will love them no matter what. Listen on... https://writersalmanac.publicradio.org/index.php%3Fdate=2004%252F12%252F16.html
The 2 most powerful forces on the planet are the power of one cell and the power of water. Both powers have 'infinite patience' and incredible discipline and can take over whatever they want, given the right amount of time. These small subtle forces are the key to building a successful pediatric chiropractic practice.
2022 has been an interesting year in research. An article showing that Autism might be seen in fetal brain MRI's 3 months before they are born...differences in the size of the insula, amygala and hippocampus were noted in their scans. And the massively important study from the AAP regarding changing developmental milestones. Both articles show how much we pediatric chiropractors are needed now more than ever to help the kids!
Lech Walesa, former president of Poland and Nobel Peace Prize winner, said that someday there will come a time when children will be able to sing a different song, but "until that time, we have work to do." We truly have work to do. With everything that is going on in the world, my mission is to serve the kids. Because until they ALL can sing a more positive song, our work is not done...
Not everybody can be like a Dr. Sid Williams and leave behind a chiropractic school and a philosophy behind them. So how do you and I leave a legacy? One person at a time! Every person you meet, whether they are your practice members, the staff at your local restaurant or Kroger, or even people you pass by on the street or in the hallway...what sort of interaction do you have with them? That 1 smile you give them might be the only smile they get all day long! Leave a legacy, 1 person at a time!
Headline: "Medication doesn't help kids with ADHD learn"! Important research showing that ADHD meds do NOT have the benefit everybody thought they did. These meds do help attention but does NOT impact classroom learning. Certain ADHD meds also have a black box warning of potential dependence and possible increase in aggressive behaviors. Hmm... Study links: https://neurosciencenews.com/adhd-medication-learning-20647/ https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2013/010187s077lbl.pdf
How are the 2022 changes in developmental milestones and TikTok related? In the normalizing of pathology! It's now ok if kids don't walk or talk until later and don't crawl at all. On TikTok, kids with certain conditions are developing tremendous followings, and other kids are imitating them, creating what is known as a mass sociogenic illness.
What is your 'extra something'? BJ Palmer coined the phrase, 'the adjustment with that extra something', but I think this applies to more than just the adjustment. It is the ultimate Life Lesson: how can your life be expressed with that 'extra something'?
Do you have a very clear idea of what side you are on? Our practice members know when they come to our office that they are getting something different and unique and not cookie-cutter like everybody else. Our office looks different, our paperwork is different, our talk is different, the chiropractic adjustments we deliver are different. Be disruptive!
Drs. Drew & Lisa Rubin have been married for almost 31 years and want to share their relationship secrets with you. Today's lesson is: Newton's First Law and how it relates to long-lasting relationships.
What is one of the most powerful forces on the planet? We're not talking about hurricanes but about moss and fungi! Yes, these simple little creatures have incredible patience and amazing discipline, to take down trees, one cell at a time.
New research shows that 8-9.5% of kids between the ages of 8-18 have anxiety and now a US Task Force recommends anxiety screening for all kids! How about recommending chiropractic screening for all kids that includes checking them NOT just for posture and scoliosis but assessing them from a functional neurological perspective!
Can you grow without part of your brain? A recent article in Wired Magazine (see link below) discusses someone born without a temporal lobe, that is very much associated with speech...but this person has great vocabulary! How did that happen? Because parts of their brain took over for the missing parts! That's the amazing power of neuroplasticity! https://www.wired.com/story/she-was-missing-a-chunk-of-her-brain-it-didnt-matter/
The Polyvagal Theory has such profound implications in chiropractic, especially in pediatrics. This must-listen interview with Dr. Stephen Porges will inspire you to look at chiropractic and taking care of the kiddos under your care in a whole different way. Part 1 was introduced last week (Episode 451). For the entire seminar, check it out here: https://bit.ly/34X5MOk
How does the Polyvagal Theory apply to chiropractic, especially pediatric chiropractic? Hear it from Dr. Stephen Porges himself, as Dr. Drew Rubin interviews the amazing author/psychologist in this 2 part series. Talking about brain-based chiropractic, Dr. Porges shares his incredible insight that is paradigm shifting! Full seminar link here: https://bit.ly/34X5MOk
What should be in an associate contract? What do you look for when you hire staff? How do you get new patients when you first open up? How do you pay back student loans early? These and many more questions answered...
When BJ Palmer said that we "have been given a sacred trust. Guard it well," he was talking about taking care of the suffering multitudes. Suffering includes pain but is not limited to pain. There are so many suffering people out there, especially kids. Make sure your mission is to reach those kiddos!
Neanderthals & Chiropractic? A recent article (see below) discussed why modern humans have back pain...essentially because of poor posture due to societies change towards more sedentary occupations and lifestyles. And when do these lifestyles start? During childhood, with kids glued to their phones and iPads. That's where chiropractic fits in! See article: https://academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/article/1/1/pgab005/6540637?login=false
Mass sociogenic illness? Never heard of it until I read an article in the Atlantic Magazine last week (see below for link). It relates the concept of a functional Tourette's Syndrome-like issue that occurs when young people watch YouTube or TikTok videos of people with Tourette's and, in a way, begin to imitate them. The relevance: they define a Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) differently than Brain-based chiropractors do...but we work on these 'disconnected kids' by reconnecting them to their brains and nerve systems! https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/02/social-media-illness-teen-girls/622916/
Why change milestones? Eliminate crawling as a milestone? Add 3 months to milestone of talking and 6 months to the milestone of walking??? I thought that the definition of milestone is "a stone set up beside a road to mark the distance in miles to a particular place." You can't change a mile marker like that! If it is a mile from one place to another, that DOES NOT CHANGE!
No greater way to build safety and trust in your practice members than to focus on what is called patient-centered exams and adjustments. That means going at their speed, performing examination procedures that they are ok with, doing adjustments that their nerve system tells you they are ready for. Not doing what we want to do, but doing what they are capable of handling at that moment. This is called being Polyvagally-informed. Check out Dr Rubin's seminar with Dr. Porges (founder of the Polyvagal Theory) on Saturday, 4/2/2022 at this link: https://bit.ly/34X5MOk
Want to see neuroplasticity in action in neuro-divergent, special needs kids? In pregnancy? Then investigate tonal techniques such as Network Spinal Analysis (NSA). How NSA works so effectively, specifically in kids with Autism and ADHD, and how impressive it works with pregnant mommas, can be understood by looking at it from a brain-based perspective.
Dr. Jeanne Ohm was a legend, an icon, a once-in-a-generation leader who passed away in 2019. Pathways to Family Wellness Magazine, the amazing healthy parenting magazine that she helped create, recently released a tribute issue to her that contained articles that Dr. Jeanne wrote over the years. She explained chiropractic so purely, so simply, so elegantly, that reading her words in this latest Pathways brought tears to my eyes. We miss you Jeanne!
The world is full of sick and suffering people. "It's your time" to take care of them, to reach them, to tell them that there's another way, to give them hope and resources and brain-based gentle chiropractic adjustments.
'What will you do' means what you can do, might do, want to do, dream about doing. The key, however, is DID you do it? If you have 'that something' in your head and your heart then it can translate through your hands and into that pregnant momma or newborn or child on the spectrum, and you can help transform their lives. "I will" is predicated on finding "that something."
"Get the Big Idea...all else follows" said BJ Palmer. Chiropractic is the biggest idea I know of. Sure, when patients come into your practice or clinic, they potentially will experience amazing results. But what about you, the chiropractor or chiropractic student? As Larry Webster said, if you go deep into chiropractic, it will share all its secrets with you. Go deep! Read Green Books. Study philosophy. Serve the people. Adjust more kiddos!
"What is the hardest part about dealing with kids?" is a question asked recently, and so began a series of queries relating to creating a thriving pediatric and prenatal based practice.
Verticalization? It is the goal of the brain in an infant's 1st year of life. Get the body from the horizontal plane to the vertical plane in 1 year, through a series of developmental milestones that take the baby from non-mobile to mobile. That 1st year, that verticalization, is critical to happen in very a specific order in a very specific time sequence. The next goal of the brain after verticalization is communication (from age 1-2), and then from age 2-3 the brain's goal is socialization. You can see how a disruption in any of these 3 can create a cascade of effects to the growing child.
1 in 10,000. 1 in 44. Those are the rates of Autism in the 1970's vs the rates of Autism in 2021 (just released by the CDC)! That is close to a 100% increase in 50 years! Dr Rubin passionately discusses the concept of Neurodiversity...accepting kids (and adults) where they are in their social communication abilities. People with Autism are not disabled...they are differently-abled. Some people with Autism are not non-verbal...they are minimally speaking. Accept people where they are not where 'society' says they should be!
Concussion of forces? When one force meets another force, the stronger force will prevail. This is how an adjustment works. The 'force' of the subluxation (its resistance or inertia) meets the 'force' of an adjustment (not a forceful adjustment...a specific adjustment applied with the perfect amount of force needed for that specific person). If the 'force' is applied precisely and with focus, then the patient benefits and the subluxation is reduced. As BJ Palmer said, "it is as simple as that!"
"Responsibilities are many, obligations are providential...you have in your possession a sacred trust. Guard it well." BJ Palmer's famous quote from the last book that he published while still alive rings in my ears every day. What are we doing to 'guard it well?'
There have been almost 300 school shootings since Columbine in 1999, according to the Washington Post. What no story really talks about is how the underlying problem with school shooters is their brain. Something has GOT to be wrong with their brain to do what they do. What we HAVE to do as pediatric chiropractors is to help repair kids brains. That is my mission. Help fix disconnected kids brains and nerve systems!
Being in practice for over 30 years gives one a unique perspective. I used to be so amazed at the 'old-timers' and now I am one of them! Being faculty at Life University, having had over 75 Life U interns in my office since 2010, and speaking for the ICPA allows me to meet a lot of chiropractors and chiropractic students, and I am blessed to be able to answer the same questions I myself asked back in my rookie years.
One simple and single idea can change the world. Newton, Einstein, Edison, Ford, the Wright brothers, all changed the world with their ideas! So did DD Palmer when he gave his first adjustment on Harvey Lillard in 1895. And his simple, single idea was not the adjustment of the spine, since that has been done for thousands of years. DD Palmer's new idea was the concept that chiropractic is "founded on tone." DD Palmer was already speaking neurology 126 years ago!
What is your level of consciousness? Are you vibrating at a level of peace or joy (high levels) or vibrating at fear or shame (lower levels)? Where you vibrate will determine what you attract in your life. The law of attraction says, "what you think about, comes about." If that is true, Wayne Dyer told us, then we 'better be careful what we think about!' Map from Power vs Force, book by Dr. David Hawkins.
Climate change and chiropractic? A recent article in Lancet gave disturbing details to what we already know about climate change, but even more disturbing was that it failed to truly describe the toll on our children. Our children are directly impacted by climate change and are sicker and have more neurological issues than ever before, but so are their parents and caregivers! Chiropractic can help kids by enhancing their neuroplasticity and that of their parents! Article link: https://www.lancetcountdownus.org/2021-lancet-countdown-us-brief/
When our practice members come in with postural issues like high shoulders, high hips, or forward head tilts, are we telling them that their brain thinks this is normal? That when they wake up in the morning, their bodies shift into this posture because that has been patterned into them? How to interrupt this pattern? Chiropractic and functional neurological exercises!
What's your 'jam'? What is your "that something" that drives you, that gets you up in the morning? There are unlimited possibilities of "that something's" out there. There is something greater out there, waiting for all of us, that will hook you and keep you passionate and excited. BJ Palmer says, "Find that something!"
Chiropractic is founded on tone, as DD Palmer said back in 1910. The nerve system can be likened to a musical instrument. Is it in tune? If not, then it can be tuned up! You can pull out the Fender guitar tuning app and make sure each string is the right tune, otherwise the songs don't sound right. That's what we chiropractors do...tune up our patient's nerve systems so that they are at the ideal frequency for improved health.
Be disruptive! Break a pattern. Interrupt your normal day-to-day. Chiropractic was born out of disruption. DD Palmer had a disruptive thought to deliver the first adjustment! But then he wanted to keep chiropractic a secret...but BJ Palmer made chiropractic a worldwide disruptive factor! Be disruptive and tell the world about chiropractic!
There's always an endless amount of questions from students about starting a practice, and Dr Rubin answers some very astute ones that relate to building a disruptive pediatric practice!
To disrupt is to be "innovative and groud-breaking." The path has been laid out for us by disruptive chiropractors like Dr. Larry Webster and Dr. Jeanne Ohm. They boldly led us to think not just outside the box, but to think as if there is no box at all! It is time for us to take their call to action and become disruptive pediatric chiropractors!
What are you doing that is different? Are you connecting to what BJ Palmer called the "sacred trust?" This 'trust' is not determined by what your office looks like or your paperwork or your EHR. It is determined by you, answering this unspoken question from the parent who brought their kid in: will you take care of my kids like they are your own? Will they sense that from you and your staff?
Pre-Covid, approximately 12% of kids ages 4-17 were labeled as either depressed or had anxiety. Now those numbers in kids ages 4-17 have doubled, to 20% with anxiety and 25% with depression!. What is the missing link? How many of those kids are getting adjusted regularly? In pediatric chiropractic offices, we see that kids who are adjusted over the long term are overall healthier and less susceptible to illnesses and disorders!
"4000 Weeks." That's 80 years, about what the average life expectancy in the US is, and also the title of a newly released book. How will you spend your 4000 weeks? The book explains how time management is a fallacy. There is no such thing as work-life balance. Do you look up at night in awe of the stars and the moon? Do you watch the sun rising or setting and see that beauty? To me it is not as much about time management as about time wonderment.
Colic might be a symptom of vestibular dysfunction. Never thought about it that way, as suggested by chiropractor Dr Jan Hoeve from the Netherlands in his landmark paper in the high-impact journal, Frontiers in Pediatrics this past May: (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fped.2021.668457/full). Have always thought that colic is due in part to dietary sensitivities, but have also said that colic/reflux is not ONLY a digestive issue...it is a brain issue. Now we have a groundbreaking theory that might explain what is really going on with colicky babies.
"Noise"...the noise in our profession confuses the public. Ask 10 chiropractors what chiropractic is, and you'll get 10 different answers. Chiropractors can all agree on 1 thing: we all want to help our practice members. Can't we teach this simple approach: that the brain and spine and nerve system all work together and if they are not in harmony, then that person will not be in alignment or balanced, no matter what the age, what the situation? Based on the new book, "Noise" by Dr Daniel Kaheman.
There is nothing more magical than looking into a newborn's eyes. There is something so peaceful, so sweet, so strong in their gaze. They cannot speak words but they speak volumes with the depths of the eyes. This also occurs when you look in the eyes of a minimally-speaking child with Autism. Their eyes are windows into their brain. Make eye contact with newborns, kids with Autism, everybody. It's your way in.
What is really happening when a child has colic or reflux? There is a mis-interpretation of the experience. The baby has taken in food but then it mis-interprets the meaning of that food! The problem isn't a lack of Pepcid or Prevacid. It is a confusion of the situation. Of course there might be a physical or physiological issue (sensitive/allergic to something in the breastmilk/formula), but the underlying question is: why? It all points to the brain!
No matter what your chosen profession, are you training like an Olympian? What are you doing everyday to hone your craft? If you are done with your 'required' tasks of the day, how do you spend the rest of your workday? Are you reading books, listening to podcasts, doing activities that empower and inspire you? Are you aiming for the Gold? That which you focus on, you become. If that is true, then focus on what you really want!
Four of the best words you can hear from a new practice member: You gave me hope! There are so many kids with so many challenges out there today. The latest statistics show 1 in 5 kids have a mental health disorder. Wow! We've got to reach more kids! Heal the world, one child, one family at a time, with brain & nerve system based chiropractic care!
Chiropractors are reconnectors. We make sure that the brain and the nerve system are working as close to 100% as possible, thereby improving neuroplasticity. We are not back doctors or bone doctors or spine doctors. The spine is our entry into the nerve system. It is what we use to improve their potential but not the end-goal. It is the first step!
How many times has a new patient said to you, "I've never heard this before"? Usually from people who have been to chiropractors "for years." Chiropractic isn't a secret, and neither is the way the human body works. But so few people really understand how important that brain/body connection is. It's our job to tell them!
Being in practice for 32 years is really quite extraordinary. Students and docs are constantly asking business related questions, which I am honored and flattered to answer. Examples are: how do you create a cash practice, how long do you spend on a first visit, do you adjust on the first visit?
What's your superpower? Not the imaginary things like flying or invisibility or speed. What's your superpower now, right now? If you are a chiropractor, maybe your superpower is your belief in the science, art and philosophy of chiropractic? A patient very kindly yesterday said "You are amazing, Dr Rubin." I replied..."the healing power of the body is amazing. We just tapped into it." That is our superpower! Tapping into the bodies incredible potential!
What fire is burning inside of you? Is there something that you love doing or dream about doing and you are beyond ready with anticipation? Now is the time, here is the place, today is the day! This recording is from a live presentation in 2017.
"The responsibilities are many," BJ Palmer says. Chiropractic is NOT the science, art & philosophy of cracking backs. It is SOOOO much bigger than that. Understand that it's not easy getting through chiropractic school, it's not easy starting a practice or associating or even interning in a new practice. There are a lot of responsibilities. But chiropractic in and of itself IS simple. Find a subluxation, fix it in whatever way feels right (no technique wars), and then: Next! Move to the next pregnant momma, next child with Autism, next baby, and repeat the process. Find, fix, repeat. That is simple.
In Frontiers of Neuroscience, a recent article talked about blending the ancient wisdom of Yoga with modern neuroscience into something called Yoga Therapy. The article was filled with specific philosophical tenets of Yoga, with statements like "moving between the 'gunas' of yoga and neural platforms". Brain based chiropractors can blend chiropractic philosophy with modern neuroscience the way Yoga Therapy is now. Here is the article: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2018.00067/full
We've got a message to deliver, about chiropractic, about wellness, about vitalism, about kids. Will you deliver that message? What are you doing to ensure that your practice members get this message? Do they see and hear it every day when visiting your clinics or offices? Because you know they certainly aren't getting it anywhere else! We've GOT to deliver the message! No one else will!
If everybody has a spine, and every spine has a subluxation, who does that leave out? Building a successful business, no matter what that business happens to be, is a 'numbers' game! If the business is not successful, then you are not talking to enough people! We know every spine has a subluxation, but most people don't! Talk the 'tic' to more people and you will invariably build your business.
We MUST tell the world what it is that we do and not expect them to know. It is our duty to explain the WHY behind the WHAT we do, since so many people around the world think chiropractic is for cracking backs and treating neck aches and back sprains. We are not back crackers, we are brain, spine and nerve system specialists. But if we don't tell our practice members that, who will?
What is innate intelligence? Educated intelligence? What was BJ Palmer talking about? It is really the connection he was addressing in the picture he calls 'the most valuable drawing in the world.' What chiropractic really does is to address an interference between the innate brain and the innate body (as BJ mentions). That interference, what we call a subluxation, lessens the potential of that person, that child, that pregnant momma. As Reggie Gold used to say, "you are far better off without a subluxation than you are with one!"
Working with kids on the Autism spectrum requires a long term care plan. A child with Autism who starts a brain-based chiropractic program should expect a 6 month to 1 year care plan to really see the benefits of neuroplasticity in action. It takes months to shift the child's brain patterning from working the way it's always been to working in a new way. In the early stages you might see mild changes in nerve system test results, but the bigger changes occur after months of brain-based chiropractic and functional neurological exercises.
I can also means I may or may not. I could, I should, I would...you can't 'could' do anything! Someone either does something or they don't. We need to change our mindsets from the coulda, woulda, shoulda's to I will do it, I have done it! What you focus on expands. If you focus on I could or worse, I can't, then you may not or you won't! I enjoy what Les Brown says about this: "Get it done in 21!"
Neuroplasticity allows the body to find a new path with new, novel input that creates brain and nerve system changes. That is the magic we see in chiropractic. The chiropractic adjustment is not a typical daily input. It is very different than what someone experiences every day. Adding that adjustment into someone's life, whether they are a kiddo, pregnant momma, or adult creates lasting neuroplastic changes and over time shifts the body to a better state of healing.
BJ Palmer would agree with this: Our job is not to fix bones or 'crack' backs or to be a spine doctor. My function is to have that patient reach their fullest potential by maximizing their brain and nerve system. Even DD Palmer said that chiropractic is founded on TONE! Fixing backs is average. Maximizing their nerve system is exceptional!
Dr Dick Santo was one of my mentors in my early days as a chiropractor (this is my 31st year!). He challenged me in ways that I so very appreciate, and helped shape a young, inexperienced recent graduate into a chiropractor with a mission. Listen to this inspiring talk about what Dr Santo said to me during lunch one day that revolutionized my thinking.
The title of this podcast comes from a 1986 book by Robert Fulgrum. Ultimately, the lesson is this: keep it simple. LIke Ram Dass says, "Be here now." Live in the moment. Joy doesn't come from big expensive things or reaching incredible financial heights. It comes from being, it comes from joy that is deep within us all, bubbling out of us when we do the right things. Live the right life. Stand by your principles but without judgement and finger-pointing. We can make a difference, each one of us, one person at a time.
The Behavioral Immune System is one of several parts of our immune system, according to author Dr. Norman Doidge (The Brain That Changes Itself). The innate and acquired responses, our skin (that protects us from invasion), and our behavior! The 'disgust' response prevents us from eating things that smell/taste/look bad. It changes our behavior! What else improves our immune system? Listening to positive podcasts or you tube videos! Reading spiritual or motivation books. Meditation and prayer. Yoga, QiGong, and even just walking your dog. Boost your immune system everyday!
What greater joy can you have than to help a pregnant momma have a natural delivery? What greater joy can you have than to help a baby who is not well get back to health? What greater joy can you have than watching a child with Autism have better eye contact, better social communication, less tantrums? I can think of no other profession in the world that has joy built in to it. All you need is your training, your hands and your heart and joy is inevitably seen across our practice member's faces! What greater joy?
Three big questions to ask yourself about your purpose: "Is it big enough, Am I uniquely positioned to pull it off, Am I passionate about it?" Does your mission keep you up at night, thinking of ways to accomplish it? I'd like to add a 4th question: Can you see yourself doing this for the rest of your life? These concepts are adapted from Fred Swaniker's article in medium, found here: https://medium.com/@FredSwaniker/resist-that-calling-it-s-probably-not-your-purpose-in-life-1dd33a297185
"The safest way to travel on chiropractic hi-ways" is a brief story in one of BJ's pamphlets. It is BJ's way of saying to create a judgement free zone in our practice. Kids on the spectrum should not be looked at as disabled but 'differently-abled'; a non-verbal child isn't non-verbal...they just don't speak OUR language. When you create a judgement free zone, kids on the spectrum feel ok to be themselves and this helps them reach their fullest potential. All kids feel welcomed no matter what their label. That is a happy safe place!
It is totally normal to have fear. It's what you do when you feel the fear that really counts. Dr. Ian Grassam told a story about The 'Noom'---the anxiety you might feel before a major sporting event or stage production that you are playing in. He said when you feel those 'butterflies' in your stomach or chest, that is called the 'Noom'...a word that means to channel your fear... into performance!
Is humanity evolving or de-evolving? There are 2 sides to this story. First, we are constantly evolving in what humanity produces, from creating the wheel in ancient Babylon, to refrigeration and toilets, and now to iPhones and laptops and Amazon today. Incredible things we have produced! But are we happier? More satisfied? Do we feel safer? Or are we becoming ever more disconnected? What do you think? This talk was originally posted in 2018 and recorded at the 2018 ICPA Family Wellness Summit.
My three favorite beginnings: Newborns, pregnant mommas, and children on the spectrum. Our health care system has failed our society in providing health. Chiropractic gives newborns, pregnant mommas, and children with Autism a new beginning. We change their trajectories, helping newborns have a better start, assisting pregnant women to experience a more holistic birth, and watching children with Autism reach their fullest potential.
"What decision can you make now that your future self will thank you for?" Les Brown asked that question in a recent video and it stopped me in my tracks. He then said, "the only thing that separates me and you is the time I spend." What time are you investing in you, in your family, in your future? What can you do NOW that your future self will thank you for? This is a BIG idea!
Everyone has 'that something' inside of them, that drives them, that motivates and inspires them. What is your 'something'? For me, it's kids, especially those with special needs. What is your passion? What do you tend to study more, focus on, read more, and when you discuss that topic, you feel it, really feel it in your gut? That is your calling, your 'something.' Find it, hold onto it, run with it!
BJ Palmer's "Slip on the Snowy Sidewalk" does not mention chiropractic's function as relieving pain but releasing pressure on nerves, restoring mental impulse flow, restoring health. DD Palmer's 1910 text says on the first page that chiropractic is founded on tone! DD and BJ were the first chiropractic functional neurologists, before they ever understood how far reaching that thought process was!
To disrupt means to interrupt, with hopes to cause radical change. Disruptive innovation is a concept that we need to apply more in chiropractic, to change people's thinking from allopathic to salutogenic, from sickness care to wellness care, from pain to brain. One of my favorite statement's is: I am not a back doctor or a spine doctor; I am a brain and nerve system specialist.' Teach our patients what we really do! This podcast originally aired in May 2018.
When you deliver a chiropractic adjustment, it doesn't end the moment your hand or Activator Adjusting Instrument leaves the person. That's when it starts! Science has shown amazing changes both at the sight of the adjustment and in the brain post adjustment that lasts for minutes and even hours. The adjustment is a like a gift that you are giving that builds like deposits in a savings account. Each adjustment adds more health, more life, more vitality into that person. So when someone asks you, "is that it?" Your answer should be, "the adjustment is just starting!"
Resilience, grit, fortitude. That is what 2020 has taught us. This has been a strange year, but we can take a lesson from some of the hardiest animals that live in the Canadian Rockies. Imagine an insect that thrives in bitter cold glacier holes, or a frog that allows itself to be put in frozen state by releasing an antifreeze-like substance for the winter and then thaws out in the spring? That is grit! That is tough. And that is the lesson 2020 has forced upon us. Here's to a healthier 2021!
Want to know how to open and run a pediatric chiropractic practice ? Dr Rubin has successfully done this twice, once in 1990 in Cresskill, NJ and the other in 2001 in Marietta, GA. In this Q & A format, Dr Rubin answers questions from senior chiropractic students during a chat session and explains the do's and don'ts of starting a practice, especially applicable to these pandemic times.
The 5 S's of Marketing during the pandemic. 2020's been a crazy year for sure, but the right marketing strategy can help any chiropractor succeed, pandemic or no pandemic. It's time to master the 5 S's, and do each one super well so that your 2021 has your practice teeming with kids and pregnant mommas!
Major controversy: is there really a left brain vs a right brain? The answer according to the research is most definitely yes! Now of course both sides of the brain are important and working all the time, but there are clear left vs right brain functions (Broca's area for example) and in this episode we dissect what are the significant characteristics of each side.
"If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change!" Wayne Dyer said this years ago, and it is more relevant today than ever. The goal isn't to change the world necessarily, but to change you, then change the one person in front of you, then the next person in front of you.
Newton's law: A body in motion tends to stay in motion, and a body at rest tends to stay at rest, unless acted upon by an outside force. Chiropractic is that force! We add motion to the spine and nerve system, thereby helping that body that was at rest (with whatever ailment) become a body in motion (healthier). The key thing is that once the body is in motion (healthier), it tends to stay in motion! But you've got to keep up the things that got it in motion in the first place!
What is a chiropractic adjustment with that extra something? The extra something is embodying "The Big Idea." The adjustment is so much bigger than just moving some spinal bones around. Have you read Stephenson's 'The Chiropractic Textbook' or BJ's 'Chiropractic Clinical Controlled Research'? These are go-to's to learn more about with the Big Idea really means!
Survival values? Accumulative constructive and accumulative destructive survival values can be applied not only to good habits vs bad habits, but also to opposing universal forces (such as energy from the sun, a constructive force, and hurricane winds, a destructive force). Innate intelligence is the personal version of universal intelligence, and we must be careful what survival values we are focusing on... are we accumulating constructive or destructive survival values?
Supercharge your practice and your life by taking the choice points you are confronted with everyday and making the best possible selection. How do you do this? Listen as I discuss a recent case of a child with Autism and the many choice points that occurred during the first several visits. Then join me on Saturday November 14th for ICPA's 1st ever Advanced Elective on Zoom! 8 hours of high voltage, high energy, hands-on, experiential pediatric chiropractic, taken to a new level. Here is the link: https://bit.ly/34W1dzN
"Life Without Fear" is the title of a book by Dr. Fred Barge, one of my favorite classic chiropractic texts. Dr Barge was a contemporary of BJ Palmer, and told us that living a chiropractic life didn't make you impervious to pain or health issues, but made you strong in knowing that "the power that made the body can heal the body'". Our healing potential is astonishing and most of our patients have no idea what it is capable of. I am teaching an Advanced Elective for the ICPA for all those docs who have taken my first required ICPA class. Find out more here: https://icpa4kids.com/training/courses/advanced-techniques-in-enhancing-pediatric-neurodiversity/
Are you watching your thoughts? What are you focused on? Are you thinking about what you want? Or are you using precious brain energy to think about what is wrong, what others want for you, or what has always been? None of those 3 will bring what you desire. Time to consciously train our own brains. If you become what you think about, then be careful what you think about!
Are you talking the 'tic?" As BJ Palmer says, the adjustment is a 'big thing' to a person, but an even more important thing is helping them 'get the big idea." A chiropractic adjustment produces great results, but a chiropractic adjustment surround by love and a focused explanation can change someone's paradigm forever. Make sure you are doing your 'Tic Talk' every day!
Planting seeds is what we do. Not every seed will grow, but the ones that do, produce glorious and potentially far-reaching results. Some seeds become a meal for the crows; some never grow at all; and some grow a bit and then wither away. But those that grow, wow can they produce! Did you plant lots of seeds today?
The concept of Neurodiversity is more important today than ever. Chiropractors don't fix problems...we maximize potential. Our goal isn't to fix a 'broken' kid or even a bad back. Our goal should be to help that person be the best person they can be, regardless of what brought them in to our offices.
Have you ever looked inside an acorn? Is there a small tree in it, a miniature version? No...there is just a seed. It looks nothing like a tree at all. Will that seed produce just 1 tree? No...that seed will GROW 1 tree, but then the seeds from THAT tree can grow many trees! Will that seed produce just 1 leaf? No...that seed will produce thousands of leaves over the course of its lifetime! PLANT SEEDS EVERYDAY, the seeds of chiropractic!
Chiropractic reconnects the disconnected kids. We allow their brains and their bodies to work together, in harmony, which manifests as a feeling. Children improve their eye contact, socialization, communication, because their brains are blazing new pathways where they didn't exist before. Chiropractic is so much more than just 'moving bones.' It's about the feeling you get when you first see that youngster, maybe at their worst, and then watch them as they blossom.
"Life is difficult" are the opening lines to the book, The Road Less Traveled. Dr Peck goes on to say that once you truly accept the idea that life is difficult, "then life is no longer difficult." This is one of the 'great truths' as he calls it, and can be helpful in realizing that we have a big job to do, and when called to do it, must endeavor to continually aim towards our mission, our purpose, our vision.
DD Palmer was way ahead of his time. In his 1914 book, The Chiropractor, published by his wife after his passing, he coins the phrase : Neuroskeleton. This is so much like the concepts brought out by recent authors like Thomas Myers in his Anatomy Trains and Guimberteau's Architecture of Human Living Fascia. We are WAY more connected than what most anatomy textbooks discuss.
Physics claims that there are 4 basic forces: Gravity, electromagnetic, weak and strong force. I'd like to propose a 5th force: the Life force! What is the difference if you cut a piece of meat or cut your finger? The finger heals; the meat doesn't! How? The Life force! That might be the strongest force in all of physics!
Contrast the Mona Lisa, arguably the most famous painting in the world, with Jackson Pollock's Convergence, (the infamous drip artist from the 1950's). What do they have to do with chiropractic? The patient comes in with whatever problems THEY tell you are their concerns. Their chief complaint may be clear and obvious, like the Mona Lisa, but the real reason they came in is more like the Pollock painting...there are lots of possibilities to find the TRUE reason they are there!
When you think of Picasso, you may think of weird looking paintings with distorted faces and misshaped landscapes. Picasso's gift was seeing multiple perspectives at once, of seeing all the emotions that a person is portraying and putting them on the canvas AT THE SAME TIME. The reason a patient comes to our offices is not THE REASON, it is the last thing that brought them there. Why they are really there is the perspective you need to figure out. Be like Picasso! Be an artist with your patients.
Can you grow under adverse conditions? Do you have the faith, confidence and belief that you can make it, no matter what? "You must work harder on yourself than you do on your job," (Jim Rohn). If a flower can grow in the middle of cement, if grass can split asphalt and thrive in the middle of the road, then so can achieve your goals and dreams!
Can you see past the obvious? Can you read between the lines, and really understand what is being said, without it being said? That is the key to successful communication. Often patients will tell you the reason why they are there, but that is not the REAL reason. It's just the first thing they are thinking of. It takes skill to sift through and get to the root cause. Have you seen Comet Neowise? It is a magnificent display of universal intelligence in action. It has all this potential as it approaches the earth, but can hardly be detected. Then that potential energy turns into kinetic energy as it lights up while bouncing on the earth's atmosphere. Just like our health...all this potential but it has to interact with lots of health deposits in order to really shine! In the US and Canada it can be seen now in the northern sky 1 hour after sunset. Check out this link from NASA: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/how-to-see-comet-neowise
One of my favorite words is 'next!' When things go off target, what's the next step? When you swing and miss, what do you correct next time? What's next after the pandemic? What are you learning now that will get you to the next place? Join Dr Rubin and Kenton for part 2 of his interview.
We have seen some remarkable pivoting by business owners who took their professions in a new direction and thrived during this pandemic. One such person is Katie, a real estate agent friend of Dr. Rubin's who is selling more houses than before COVID-19! Her story is a great lesson for us all on how to be unstoppable!
My friend Kenton told me a few weeks ago that in the next 16 to 24 months there will be an economic boom similar to the boom that happened after World War II. I decided to interview him for this podcast so we can all hear his positive thoughts, changing the format of this podcast. After massive destruction comes massive exponential growth. Especially in areas of technology healthcare and education. Education has proven that it’s more babysitting in the US than actual learning. Healthcare is proven it could not take care of his people because it’s really not healthcare.
Look at your new feed recently? How do you make sure you are not being pulled down by the negativity of it all? By being very selective about what you engage with. Only read/listen/watch the articles that are either going to give you more information that will be useful, or that is more positive. It's easy to get sucked into the vortex of negative news. Try to make the experience more useful and meaningful by being a filter of the information you let in.
Time marches on. Are you growing or just existing? According to Jim Rohn, your character is determined by the people you are around, the books you read, and the seminars you attend. Are you making the best of those things? Is next year going to be a repeat of this year, or are you constantly looking to improve, learn, become a more and better version of you?
'What greater joy' is there than knowing you can help children, adults, and pregnant mommas with chiropractic? "You never know how far reaching something you think say or do will affect the lives of millions tomorrow," said BJ Palmer. These are challenging times but are also times filled with potential and opportunity.
Chiropractic school gives you an education but doesn't 'make' you a chiropractor. You have to move that education from your head to your heart, and only then can it really come through your hands. Then we can truly change lives not by 'moving bones' but by moving people, by moving them to be inspired to be a better version of themselves.
"If you were the last chiropractor on earth, would chiropractic survive?" asked Reggie Gold, one of my favorite chiropractic philosophers. With the pandemic and everybody's offices shifting to a different way of practicing, is chiropractic surviving in your community? Students about to graduate should look upon this time and realize that there has never been a better opportunity to show the world what chiropractic really has to offer.
Suppose DD & BJ Palmer never brought chiropractic to the world? What sort of change would that have? Would there simply be more people with back pain? Or has chiropractic contributed so much more to the planet than we can possibly imagine? We can use a mind game to create an alternative reality, but in my belief system, chiropractic is the ONLY available system of HEALTH care!
Back in 1998, I was inspired by a cassette talk (yes, cassette) by Dr. Dick Santo to write the first of 3 novels. He asked, "what would happen if a plague hit this country?" I was driving home and had to pull over, the outline of an entire novel flowing through my head as I grabbed a pen and paper and wrote it all down. The novel, aptly called, The Adjustment, plots out from a chiropractic point of view, what might happen if a pandemic hit our great nation. Well here it is, 22 years later, and a pandemic really DID hit the country! Find out more about the novel here: https://amzn.to/2Y4FNPk
How does Coronavirus effect the brain? Loss of sense of smell and taste are amongst the newest neurological findings. Why is this important to a pediatric chiropractor? In episode 324, the topic was Lyme Disease & PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Strep). Both Lyme and PANDAS create autoimmune issues in kids, and we take care of lots of kiddos in our practice with these challenges. What might be next? An autoimmune disorder associated with Covid? Maybe call it PANIC (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Inflammation due to Covid)?
"Care so much that you don't care at all." What does that mean? That was a profound statement from Dr. Sid Wiliiams in July of 1993 that changed everything for me. It means that you care so much about something that you totally detach from the results. You do something for the sake of doing it, not for the rewards or accolades or promise of something in the future. It explains Dr. Sid's thought process of "Lasting Purpose."
The chiropractic adjustment hasn't changed but the patient experience has altered drastically. Social distancing has made our parking lot into our waiting room, new patient histories being taken while they are in their cars, and using Zoom as a telehealth platform for those patients who are unable to visit our practice. Adapting with the times!
Chiropractic is considered an essential business by the Department of Homeland Security and by many State governors. It is essential to make sure all people's brains' and nerve systems are working at peak efficiency during this tumultuous time. This is the first episode recorded during COVID-19 at home instead of in a classroom or lecture facility where the other 300+ podcasts were done.
In light of the current situation, it is ever more important to put things in perspective. This talk from a few years ago is about how you can see things one way, and with a slight twist, can see things from a different viewpoint. The conversation was related to looking at famous paintings, but can be extrapolated to any situation, including the current crisis we are in. There really are 2 sides to every story. At least...
During this challenging time, Dr. Rubin shares 10 steps to creating a disruptive pediatric practice. Disruption means not doing the same ole' things the same ole' way. It means thinking not out of the box but that the box doesn't exist at all. What are you doing now to be disruptive?
If you drop keys out of your hand, where do they go? They fall down. How many times do they fall down? Every time. 100% of the time. As long as our planet has gravity, then every time you let go of the keys, they will fall. Dr. Sid told us that's how success works. You've got the keys in your hands...now just let go! During this trying time, know that YOU have the keys in your hands RIGHT NOW...and if you let go, then success will come to you. You've got to do your part, though. You need to have the keys in your hands!
During this challenging time, we must constantly refocus on our mission, our purpose, our reason. It is easy to get sidetracked. Stay the course. Be the lighthouse, the beacon of hope for your community, for the world. Remember the quote, "as you give so shall you receive."
Did you know there are at least 3 types of infantile torticollis? Dr. Rubin distills the great work of Dr.Heiner Biedermann from the classic text, "Manual Therapy in Children", in which he calls torticollis "Kinematic Imbalances causing Suboccipital Strain", or KISS for short. Dr. Biedermann identifies KISS 1 and KISS 2, and Dr. Rubin adds a 3rd sort of KISS (aptly called KISS 3) to the mix. Learn what they are and how to approach them from a chiropractic point of view, especially in regards to brain development.
Dr. Sid was a charismatic, larger than life persona. He would mesmerize audiences with his clarity, focus and conviction, imploring us to study chiropracTIC so you can learn to speak with authority. Success in chiropractic was not about selling; it was about believing so strongly that your practice members literally felt your conviction.
What are you spending your free time on? Facebook? Instagram? Make sure that you balance your time with solid reading. Read the latest research on the topics you are most interested in. Study the top textbooks, get lost in the latest articles, get push notifications from your favorite journals. Keep on top by constant study.
Chiropractors are truly Neuroplacticians. The bodies ability to heal itself, the brains ability to heal itself, is far more profound and amazing than we ever thought possible. For years it was thought that brains don't heal, nerves don't heal, that neuroanatomy is fixed and hardwired. But we have learned otherwise. We have learned that we have this incredible neuroplasticity that makes our ability to heal truly astounding. Learn how you can tap into this amazing power. Originally aired in 2017.
Trevi fountain in Rome, one of the most famous and beautiful fountains in the world, is a place that Dr. Rubin and his wife have visited several times. It is a very mystical and magical experience to be at the Trevi fountain, and Dr. Rubin explains how the fountain relates to life and health. There are deeper meetings to this fountain than meets the eye. Originally posted in 2016.
If you are on a mission, you are unstoppable. You do something until you succeed. And if you try something that doesn't work, you say, 'Next', and try something else.
Is the next child you are adjusting going to be the President of the United States in 40 years? Do you know what sort of effect your adjustments today may have on the future? We need to take care of each and every patient as if they might be the next big influencer, because who knows, they just might be!
How are you studying chiropractic? Are you reading textbooks? Class notes? National Board reviews? All that is great and necessary to pass classes and boards, but where are you learning chiropracTIC? Where are you getting the philosophy of chiropracTIC? You've got to study chiropracTIC! Read BJ Palmer's 'Green Books', listen to podcasts like this one or Sigafoose, go to philosophy seminars, and 'talk it down' with fellow students and docs.
Learning about the Polyvagal Theory by Dr. Stephen Porges has truly revolutionized the way I look at children, especially those children that are on the Autism spectrum. The Polyvagal Theory shows us how we have evolved over time to be more social, and also shows us why children or adults with Autism have problems with socialization. The vagus nerve is so much more than just 'rest/digest'...it is critical in social engagement.
Darwin talked about survival of the fittest in the 1800's, rocking the world with his theory of evolution. What are we witnessing today? Is humanity evolving? Certainly our technology is, but the real question is, are we? Are we as a species called Homo sapiens truly evolving or are all the trappings of modern society causing us to de-evolve?
What happens when you are in a situation where there seems to be 2 possibilities, but neither looks favorable? Dr. Stephen Covey would teach, "There has to be a 3rd alternative." Dr. Rubin explains how chiropractic was the 3rd alternative in one of his favorite cases (permission granted to use this case), and how you can use the 3rd alternative in your lives.
Even though some of the original chiropractic textbooks were written 100 or more years ago, there are still lots of gems in each one. DD and BJ Palmer were way ahead of their time and if they were still around today, you know they would be doing cutting edge research. Enjoy the holidays!
"Hard easy." You have a lofty goal, based on your mission and vision, and create an action plan to achieve it. This requires a lot of up front work, but in the end, your efforts pay off. "Easy hard." You have no aim in life, no goals, action plans, and just kind of do whatever comes your way. This is way easier up front, but later on, it is much more challenging since you are more likely to be unprepared. Which path do you choose?
Movement is everything. Even BJ Palmer wrote about it in the 1950's. Yet how different life is now, 70 years later. We spend most of our lives sitting...sitting at work, while driving in cars, while watching Netflix or playing games on our phones. Has our modern way of living created a version of the zombie apocalypse that we read about in World War Z or watch on The Walking Dead? It's just a different way of killing off our brain cells.
Dentistry in the mid 1900's was a second rate health field. They created a strategic plan to change their image and in 50 years proved their plan was a rousing success. Modern dentistry is an incredible field with multiple specializations and incredible market growth in every sector. What is chiropractic planning for the next 50 years? The same as the last 125? What's our strategic plan? Here's one thought, originally recorded in 2014 at Life Vision.
Did you ever look back at the events of your life, and see how all the pieces that didn't make sense at the time actually got you here? Dr Rubin explains how his original career path took a sharp turn during his junior year of college when he had a profound life-shaping experience. What's your story?
Chiropractic is magic! Small victories is what it is all about. What we are about is changing brains not changing backs. Let's teach our practice members and teach our students and teach our staff what to expect and that when the brain changes, everything changes!
What is salutogenesis? In a phrase: you can always improve your health and wellness. In a recent magazine article, the writer was surprised by some of the benefits people were reporting under chiropractic care, stating that chiropractors treated various illnesses and ailments. What the writer doesn't know is that chiropractors don't 'treat' injuries, sicknesses, or problems. We take care of people! We are in the people business, leading them towards wellness, then keeping them that way!
There is no better feeling than to see children in my office having a great time, laughing, giggling, and being surprised that they can have fun in a 'doctors office.' Our annual Halloween Bash is such a day for us, where we go all out for the kids and they just have the greatest time. I purposely step back during this party and capture moments of the commotion, the happiness, the feeling of joy in chiropractic!
Lyme disease and PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with Strep)are becoming way more common than ever before, part of a growing trend of autoimmune issues that include emotional or behavioral changes. Every parent who complains that their child had a sudden shift in behavior needs to be questioned about an illness or insect bite prior to the onset of changes. This is an almost hour long talk given to the Life U ICPA Club.
Question: What would the world's reaction be if tomorrow, we all woke up and chiropractic ceased to exist? This thought came from watching the recently released movie, Yesterday, in which the world somehow lost its memory of The Beatles. As Reggie Gold often said, "if you were the last chiropractor on the planet, would it survive?" These are profound questions that we try to tackle in this episode.
The chiropractic profession lost a great hero recently when Dr. Jeanne Ohm left this earthly plane. She was a friend, mentor, leader, warrior, and champion of women in chiropractic. She took the ICPA from a small group when Dr. Webster passed away in 1997 to over 6000 members, the largest non-political chiropractic group on the planet. Dr. Jeanne's last talk at Life University was in December 2018 and so many students and docs commented to me that she made them laugh and cry. One student said, "Her passion was so palpable. I was slipping away from the principle and she brought me back." She will be missed. We love you Jeanne.
Relationships are built one moment at a time. Dr Drew Rubin and his wife Dr Lisa Rubin have been building their relationship for almost 30 years, and feel that it is their constant efforts that have created the long lasting love relationship that they enjoy. In this podcast you will hear from both Dr Rubin's as they talk freely and openly about what it takes to keep a relationship strong for a lifetime. This podcast was first aired as Episode 167.
Just and alignment have many meanings. Dr Rubin, in this commencement speech given to the graduating class of Summer 2019, implores the graduates to move beyond the idea of being "just a chiropractor." He leads them to align with the bigger mission and purpose, which is to give, to love and to serve. As BJ Palmer once said, "Get the big idea, all else follows."
Ever notice how water over time can slowly erode practically anything? The Grand Canyon was carved one drop at a time! Ever notice how small blades of grass can lift or even crack a sidewalk? How does it do that? One blade at a time. Things that don't look so powerful are in fact the most powerful of all, when you add one thing to it: Principle #6-Everything takes time.
A few days after 9/11 occurred, chiropractors began setting up makeshift clinics around Ground Zero to adjust the rescue workers at no charge. Later these chiropractors took over storefronts or erected tents to adjust thousands of police, fire, military and other rescue workers, and this went on for months. There is a lot of talk about mission trips in chiropractic; this was one of the most important mission trips of all.
Tons of acorns on the ground lately. If they stay on the sidewalk, will the function of the seed be expressed? A seed must be planted and watered and have sun and proper food to grow. The same with any idea. A new patient walks into your office and they may have no idea what chiropractic really is. That is your seed opportunity. If you tell them nothing, don't expect the seed to grow. But if you do tell them about chiropractic, then the seed may germinate in fertile ground.
"Research. Research. We need more research!" We hear this over and over again. However, there are studies that actually show that chiropractic care creates neurological changes. Dr. Fuhr, cofounder of the Activator Methods Technique, has made a number of research-heavy presentations that display without a doubt the effects a chiropractic adjustment can have on the nerve system. Yes, we do need more research, but we already have valid and reliable science to back us up.
You are not just touching a back, you are changing levels of consciousness. In the book Power vs Force, Dr. Hawkins discusses levels of consciousness and how living at higher levels can actually help lift people up around you. Our job is far deeper than what happens on a physical level when we adjust our practice members. We are helping to raise consciousness which helps them with way more than we can imagine or measure! Your living at higher awareness raises the levels of others around you!
Dr. Sid Williams had this amazing way of talking and putting things in perspective with unique phrases and stories. Dr. Sid passed in 2012 and Dr. Nell, his wife, passed last week, so in their honor, I post this podcast telling the world about how Dr. Sid changed the lives of countless numbers of people including 1000's of chiropractors. To the legacy of Dr. Sid and Dr. Nell...
In modern times, if you want to go somewhere, you theoretically don't have to know much about it. You can 'get an Uber' and they will take you there. Starting your own practice isn't quite that simple as getting an Uber. You've got to know where you are, where you want to go, and need a roadmap on how to get there. So many students graduate knowing where they are, but not knowing where they want to go. Time to set some goals and make a roadmap!
Student loan debt today can blast past $200,000 and that can certainly be a daunting sum if you think about it too much. There is a way to pay them back way quicker than what is expected. Whether you are a student who is still accruing loans, a new doc who has to start paying them back, or a doc who's been paying them off, Dr. Rubin will teach you to become debt-free faster.
What's your practice filled with? Kids, pregnant women, moms, dads, athletes? It's actually filled with the stories...the testimonials and ratings and reviews of your raving fans! When a practice member walks in to your office, do they sense that feeling of victory? Of help? Of encouragement? You create that with your actions and your results.
Stonehenge is 5000 years old and is aligned with the summer and winter solstices. Even that many centuries ago, they knew alignment was critical. If they wanted to see the sun through the stones on June 21st, they had to be set up in extremely specific ways. If we want the brain and the nerve system to perform optimally, then the spinal column requires that same specific alignment. A related question then would be, "what are you aligned with?" Dr. Rubin explores these topics as he shows pictures from his tour at Stonehenge in June.
As chiropractors, aren't we all taking the 'Road Less Travelled?" Isn't that part of our heritage? We have been marching to the beat of a different drum since our inception. But because of that, we have the ability to help make profound differences in children's and adult's lives, often when other 'roads' have failed them. Blaze your own trail! Originally posted in 2016.
Why do we do what we do? Sometimes the patients we encounter present us with a high degree of technical challenge, and we wonder, "are we ready for it?" Then you dig deep and, as Dr. Sid said, you do what you are trained to do. This podcast was originally released in the Spring of 2018.
If you take care of children, especially special needs kids, you will invariably discuss the topic of nutrition. Gluten free and dairy free are just the tip of the iceberg. Food intake has a profound affect on mood and behavior and an even bigger affect on children. Listen as Dr. Rubin explains his take on 'diets'...
When a patient announces that they just found out that they are pregnant, it is a time of great excitement and joy. However, it's also a time of high anxiety, panic, and worry. The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends a maximum C-section rate at 15%. The US rate is at 32%, while Norway's rate is 17%. What's the difference? We treat a pregnancy like we treat a disease, like it's a problem that needs to be solved instead of a natural process that's been happening for millennia!
Being a lighthouse has many different connotations. You can be a beacon of hope in the fog of life's challenges. You can be the steady light amongst the ever changing sea. Or you can be the tallest tower in the region, the sort of landmark that everybody knows. Be the lighthouse for your family, your community, your patients. Be their beacon of hope during this time of turmoil.
Inertia is what keeps a rock stuck in the ground or a person stuck in less than positive habits. As Issac Newton said, 'A body in motion tends to stay in motion, and a body at rest tends to stay at rest, unless acted on by an outside force.' What is your outside force? What will make you change your direction? Are you stuck in inertia or are you in motion?
Trajectories. It's all about trajectories. If early intervention is the key, isn't neurologically-based chiropractic care for kids, especially those with Autism, the best possible intervention? That was Dr. Rubin's passionate question at the 2019 Autism One conference, where he was honored to be one of the speakers. Listen as Dr. Rubin lays out the problem and then offers a plan of action to reach the kids who need it the most.
Almost 60% of US kids are NOT flourishing??? How is that possible? The study from Johns Hopkins shows that children need to build resilience and family connections in order to flourish. Chiropractically, they also need to build health resilience by working on their brain and nerve system function, as well as ensuring the best nerve system connections so they don't end up as a 'disconnected kid' (as Dr. Melillo would say). Let's build kids resilience and connection and help them flourish! Article found here: https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/10.1377/hlthaff.2018.05425
"You never know..." can be a very accurate statement. Back in 1983 while at SUNY Albany for undergraduate, I worked in a facility for the developmentally disabled, before I even knew what my exact career choice would be, Who would have known, over 30 years later, the impact that part time college job would have on my life? Who could have predicted in 1983 that a large percent of the children I see in practice have some sort of developmental disability, and that job prepared me for my speciality in chiropractic? You never can know...
"What greater joy" can you have than to help the kids, families, pregnant women, live better lives? Feel how amazing our lives as chiropractors are! We are so blessed to help children, adults, athletes, everybody, with just our hands! What other profession gets to do what we do, and celebrate it the way we can? Gotta love it!
Just visited the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, looking at Picasso's 1957 interpretation of the painting Las Meninas by Velazquez (from 1656). The same scene, 2 dramatically different representations. This holds true with chiropractic. There were no complaints about either version of the painting. Nobody said one painting was 'rubbish'. Can't we do that in chiropractic? Can the mechanistic chiro's and the subluxation-based chiro's finally agree that we are all trying to help people?
Keeping up with the research, keeping up with the health care trends, is vital to communicate with your patients. For example, it is imperative to know about the recent mumps and measles outbreaks since practice members are going to ask you about it. And we have to face the negative media we are occasionally getting since patients ask about too!
What is the next big thing in chiropractic? Something is about to change in a big way to revolutionize chiropractic. I encourage our profession and our students to think ahead of the curve, because either someone else on the mechanistic side of chiropractic will come up with something, or we will, and I'd rather it be the vitalists. So come on a 'Shark Tank' journey with us...
BJ Palmer describes what chiropractors do as working with 'the subtle substance of the soul.' He doesn't talk in this brief chapter from 'The Bigness of the Fellow Within' about subluxations, adjustments, or even the spine. He talks with reverence about the "tiny rivulet of force" that "animates the internal living world."
Most likely Freddie Mercury of Queen did not read BJ Palmer's "Bigness of the Fellow Within". But he did write, in Queen's hit song, We Are The Champions, that he "considers it a challenge before the human race." Dr. Rubin feels Freddie Mercury was talking about chiropractic...and our challenge is getting chiropractic to the masses. You've heard the statement, "If they knew what we knew, they'd do what we do!" Why hasn't chiropractic reached critical mass yet? That is the challenge Dr. Rubin offers you: can we get the entire country adjusted?
Looking at works of art can be exhilarating because you get a chance to view it from multiple different vantage points, not just visually and physically but emotionally. What does the painting mean to you? How does it make you feel? There are often 2 sides to every story.
When BJ Palmer said "Guard it well," he was referring to keeping chiropractic philosophy pure. The phrase "Not on my watch" was used in WWII, meaning "while I am on guard, I will do everything in my power to make sure America is safe and sound." Chiropractors and chiropractic students: What are we doing to guard it well? To do what BJ asked us to do in 1961?
Thirty years I've been in practice but never in a million years would I have predicted an entire nation (Australia) to mandate that chiropractors shouldn't "use spinal manipulation" on children 2 years of age or younger. As a pediatric chiropractor in the US, it saddens me to think of what this means for our future. I see kids everyday that are 2 years old and younger improving in so many ways it's practically magical. Listen on to hear a possible way around this latest situation. Here is the link to the Australia policy: https://www.ahpra.gov.au/News/2019-03-14-Board-announces-interim-policy.aspx
BJ Palmer wrote "Advertising is Ethical" back in 1950, and explained the importance of 'telling the story.' But with the advent of social media, advertising now takes on a whole new meaning that BJ never imagined, and that is posting of videos and advertorials that may portray chiropractic in a less than positive light. Yes, advertising is ethical, but it is of utmost importance for us to filter what we are saying, writing and especially posting as videos.
DD Palmer back in 1910 suggested that subluxations come from Trauma, Toxins and Thoughts, what modern chiropractors have named the 3 T's. Back then, technology was more related to movement and industry, with the advent of cars, airplanes, and machinery for the industrial revolution. Now we need to add our 21st century concept of technology to the list of the 3 T's, since Tech accounts creates trauma (such as Tech Neck), Toxins (from associated EMF's), and Thoughts (the super fast pace that Tech has pushed on us).
DD Palmer in his 1914 book The Chiropractor made some revolutionary comments, including mentioning what he called the 'neuroskeleton.' That is a brilliant foreshadowing of today's more neurologically based chiropractic. He also coined a term 'functionating', which described how optimum the nerve system's tone was (tone being another favorite of DD's). Listen in as Dr. Rubin explains to Logan University via webinar what DD Palmer is saying to the 21st century chiropractor.
There is a saying in the Autism community: "If you've seen 1 person with Autism, you've seen 1 person with Autism." There are so many manifestations that really don't fit in the categories defined by the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) used by psychologists and psychiatrists. Amanda Baggs, an adult with Autism, posted a video on Youtube in 2007, has over 1 million views and accurately describes what she calls the 'workings of the Autistic brain." It will shift your thinking about how a person with Autism thinks. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/JnylM1hI2jc
Love is a very overused word. People say they love ice cream or love a good book, but for Dr. Rubin, love is a special word reserved for a special person or being passionate about a purpose. Dr. Rubin talks about how he loves his wife of 28 years, how he loves adjusting kids and talking about adjusting kids, and how these are all interrelated.
In BJ Palmer's "A Slip on the Snowy Sidewalk", he presents a method for looking at scale, a way to take an occurrence that is common and then expanding it to represent all of humanity. He called this the Big Idea, and it means taking what each of us does and magnify that over thousands of chiropractors and millions of adjustments. Imagine how far reaching all of our adjusting has been and will be? That is scale!
The Green Book, History Repeats, was written in 1951, by BJ Palmer. It talks about how chiropractic as a profession always seems to be making the same mistakes. Dr. Larry Webster in the 1980's mentioned this fact in an old ICPA video, and today, we face the same challenges. Webster knew pediatrics was the most rewarding specialization, but also knew it was filled with potential detours that can sidetrack our ability to help the children who need it the most....
Chiropractic's founder's created a Triune of Science, Art and Philosophy purposefully, to emphasize the importance of needing a sturdy foundation to build this healthcare discipline. Dr Rubin believes it is far better to hold the thought: "all for one and one for all!" We need each of them to use all of them, and in this podcast, Dr Rubin will explain how they dovetail together.
"Life is difficult...and when you accept that life is difficult, life is no longer as difficult" is a quote from Dr. M. Scott Peck's amazing book, The Road Less Traveled. If we can look at our difficulties and realize that difficulties are a part of life, that challenges ARE life, then we can more readily accept the bumps in the road that we all will face.
Lyme and PANDAS are a part of a growing set of issues known as Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders. Watching trends for the last 30 years, Dr Rubin recalls a time when Lyme was relatively infrequent and PANDAS was unheard of. Now we are seeing more and more kids with one or sometimes both of these challenges. And we are finding that once you develop either, you are prone to relapses.
The word movement has a number of different meanings. It could mean moving locations, moving your body (as in exercise), move the bone (like Gonstead), or being moved emotionally. A good chiropractor understands how to use all 4 parts of this word 'movement' to create a feeling in their patients, whether they are 3 days, 3 years, or 30 years old. To inspire our patients, we have the 'move' them on multiple numbers of planes. We should really embrace the word, MOVEMENT!
What makes a successful pediatric chiropractic practice? Dr. Rubin celebrates his 30th anniversary in chiropractic this year, and was asked to speak at Life Vision Raw, so he distilled all those years of effort into 7 timeless principles. Listen on..
Are you a flip phone or an iPhone? Are you keeping up with the times, studying the latest research, constantly learning new things, while brushing up on the fundamentals? Do you remember what it was like to simply text someone on a flip phone? How many steps it took just to create a short message? Yes it was mind blowing at the time, but now with the iPhone, you can literally use Siri to just say the message and it types itself. We do best when we adapt and change and grow with the times.
Picasso was an incredible artist in the 20th century, most famous for bringing cubism into the world of modern art. His major contribution was showing multiple perspectives in the same work of art, which is vital in understanding how to take care of kids in a pediatric chiropractic practice. Kids (and adults too) will often come in with a complaint or issue that the parent has identified, but it is your job as a neuro- detective to come up with what is REALLY going on with the child. The child is NOT the diagnosis. Often we see manifestations of a weakened nerve system that are classified as something, but in reality is the expression of a brain and nerve system gone wrong.
Have you ever noticed how many smiles are crooked these days? Or how many children have eyes that are not working together? Dr. Rubin began noticing this trend years ago when he started working with kids on the spectrum and with infants with developmental issues, but never heard it put so concisely as he did when he heard about the new book, Crooked, by Forrest Maready. To add to Mr. Maready's work, Dr. Rubin suggests that the environment and epigenetics can be added to the list of causative factors. Fascinating stuff...listen on!
Learning disorders now affect approximately 10% of our young kids today, which equates to about 1 in 5 children in the US. Today there is more help and advocacy than ever before for these children, but one potentially important piece that is not often accomplished is early intervention. It is challenging to assess an actual learning disorder until the child is old enough for preschool, however there may be signs earlier on, pointing us to weaknesses that can strengthened before they are in preschool.
Green book? What's a Green book? It is a series of 39 volumes written mostly by BJ Palmer from about 1910 to 1961, containing the essence of chiropractic philosophy. If you haven't read Green Books, then you haven't really felt the passion and urgency of the BJ Palmer chiropractic philosophy. Where to start? The Bigness of the Fellow Within!
"Think & Grow Rich" is one of the most influential books I have ever read. Written by Napoleon Hill in 1937, it is as applicable today as it was when I first read it in 1993. Hill would say that the combination of written down goals and a burning desire to achieve them makes you almost unstoppable. Get busy writing 2019 goals!
How many of you have read the book, "Are You The Doctor, Doctor?" Dr. Fred Barge was an icon but his legacy lives on with his books and the spirit of chiropractic that he embodied. Another great book of his is: "Life Without Fear." These both should be required reading in chiropractic school, along with BJ Palmer's "Bigness of the Fellow Within" and "The Glory of Going On" and Dr. Sid Williams, "Lasting Purpose." This IS now the correct Fred Barge podcast. The 1st download yesterday was incorrect. Thanks and sorry about the confusion!
How does Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville and chiropractic fit together? They both started with an idea and then built an empire around it. BJ Palmer could have kept chiropractic a family secret like his dad wanted, but he knew it was bigger than the 2 of them. Jimmy Buffett has taken 1 hit song and knew he could make something more out of it, and is one of the top grossing recording artists of today! Not because he has more hit records, but because he knows how to market himself. We can take a lesson from that! Happy Holidays!
Milestones are not called mile suggestions. When you are on a jogging trail and you pass by a mile marker, it doesn't say "somewhere between 3/4 of a mile and 1 mile." The mile marker is very specifically at the 1 mile mark. Same thing with milestones. They are the way the infant and toddlers' brain literally turns on or boots up. Sure there are variations, especially with preemies, but for the most part, certain things should happen within very certain times or else concern should be raised.
Glenn Doman wrote the book, "What to do about your Brain Injured Child" over 30 years ago but it is still a classic. Anybody who either has a child with disabilities or has a child who has sustained a brain injury should read this. It talks about roadblock injuries, the place in the brain where the child cannot get past. Doman mentions the 'workplace' of a child with brain challenges should be the floor and not a chair or carseat.
Recently I was asked to speak about concussions to a large group of chiropractors, and 2 of the most important topics in that 4 hour class were: there are 6 types of concussion, and their are some very interesting risk factors for certain people who will have a more challenging time healing from concussions. Many of the risk factors truly make sense once you understand the 6 types of concussion.
Do you explain why you do what you do? Your job is not simply to adjust mechanically, but to transfer a feeling from you to them about how amazing their body (or their kids body is) and how you want to reconnect them. Our patients come to us in varying degress of 'disconnectedness' and our mission is to change that.
Dr. Jeanne Ohm is one of my heroes and mentors in chiropractic today, as she is to thousands of other pediatric and family based DC's. Years ago she introduced me to the book Manual Therapy in Children by Dr. Heiner Biedermann, an Osteopath from Germany. It is an incredible read and shines with incredible quotes that are so chiro-centric even though Dr. Beidermann was more traditionally trained. Check this out!
The default brain mode concept comes from one of the most interesting papers I have read recently. It describes how neuroscientists found an area of the brain that turns on when you are in a resting state (the default mode) and turns off during focused activity. Further research has shown that in children with Autism and ADHD that this default mode doesn't turn on and off correctly. Is it possible that our modern technology has caused our brains to be more distracted (the default mode), with the constant buzzing, beeping and chirping of our phones, telling us to "look at me" because it just received a text, tweet or Facebook post? What mode are you mostly in? Default or focused?
It is important to understand the variety of prescription and non-prescription medications used by kids today so that we can know what they are coming in with. Do you know the most commonly prescribed meds? Know what they are for? This is an introduction into what they are taking and why.
Things have changed so much since Dr Rubin started in practice almost 30 years ago. The number one reason to see a child in 1989 was...ear infections! Now, even though that is still high on the list, the number one reason is neurodevelopmental or neurobehavioral disorders. Dr. Rubin explains the rise in challenges like Lyme Disease, depression, and anxiety, in context of why it is so important to keep on learning and researching.
Yes, you read that right. There is an organization called subluxation deniers, whose entire mission is to discredit individuals, schools and organizations that stand by the word subluxation. For those of you who are not chiropractors or chiropractic patients, a subluxation is the main reason why there is a chiropractic profession to begin with...it occurs when the brain and the nervous system are effected by some sort of malposition, irritiation or inflammation. To deny the subluxation is to deny the very essence of what chiropractic is!
DD Palmer did not write the first chiropractic textbook...it was actually written by 3 former students of DD Palmer: Smith, Paxson and Langworthy. Today we present what 21st Century Modernized Chiropractic could be, based on 3 facts: The blending of science, art and philosophy, unifying the profession the way the dentists did by creating very specific sub-disciplines, and "staying on our side of the highway."
There are 3 kinds of people, according to BJ Palmer: Pioneers, plodders and parasites. Chiropractors can be pioneers if we stick to the philosophy while we deliver our amazing product... chiropractic adjustments. There are so many who say that the philosophy and science don't mix, but nothing can be further from accurate. Philosophy and science should mix to ensure that we are educating our patients from a different place than the pain management direction that our profession is so stuck in.
Do you look for rainbows or just stumble accidentally on them? There is a way to seek them out. You need to know when to look, and where to look. What direction? What time of day? Is it after every rainstorm, or just certain ones? These are all important questions because ultimately, are you looking for rainbows in your life, or are you stuck focusing on the storms?
Who has been your greatest teacher? The one that has inspired you, that changed you, that truly reached you? I am fortunate to have one while in 9th grade High School American History. Dr. Robert Fleishacker saw something in me, demanded more from me, expected the best from me, and helped me become the person I am today. This talk is dedicated to him and all the great teachers out there!
Children with post concussion syndrome and children with high functioning Autism share a number of characteristics, according to recent research. They both have speech issues, emotional challenges, motor planning problems, etc. Listen as Dr. Rubin explains this relationship and ties it in with Alzheimer's!
BJ Palmer's timeless quote is, "You never know how far reaching something you may think say or do will affect the lives of millions tomorrow." The reason the patient comes to your office is NOT the real reason they came to the office. It's what brought them to you. The real reason is the far reaching effects of chiropractic!
Why work on the infant cranium? Because 33% of the major nerves in the infant (and everybody) are located above atlas! The cranial nerves are critical in the babies ability to latch and nurse properly, to digest food, to sleep, and so many other functions, so if we are not working gently on those precious little heads, we are missing a big portion of what we can potentially do with these kiddos!
Ever see something then take a look and see so much more? That's what Dr. Rubin asks us to do when confronted with something you think you know or think is so obvious. We need to think past our blinders and ensure that we are following are dreams. Dr. Rubin uses the example of a box with 16 squares to illustrate this valuable point.
What are the solutions to the greatest threat to health today? Dr Rubin explores the answers in the last of the 3 part series. It's often been said, "What can one person do?" The answer is: a lot more than doing nothing! Dr. Sid always said, "give for the sake of giving, serve for the sake of serving, and love for the sake of loving." His words are truer today than ever before!
The greatest threat is the health of our brains! Why are so many children being diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, concussions, seizure disorders, learning disorders? Why are so many adults developing Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, dementia? Our brains are the most important organ and yet we are witness to a new epidemic of broken brains! Listen to part 2 of 3.
The Number 1 Health Threat of the 21st Century is a 3 part series! Why are so many kids and adults having brain based issues? Where is all this coming from? We must discuss what we are doing wrong to figure out what to do right. In this first part, Dr Rubin discusses the Autism-Concussion connection, how both issues have similar clinical findings. Stay tuned for Parts 2 & 3, and thanks to Adam B. for helping with the recordings.
Neurodevelopmental issues were once thought to be mainly a problem in developed countries, but a recent study in Lancet showed that these problems are pervasive all over the world! And the key to the study is that not enough is being done about taking care of kids with Autism, ADHD, and developmental issues. Chiropractic is poised to help these children.
You work hard and expect certain results. Sometimes that expectation can set you up for some unanticipated challenges. Dr. Wayne Dyer, in his book, A Spiritual Solution to Every Problem, tells us that it is important to strive, but not be attached to the outcome. Everything is a process and sometimes things that don't work out are valuable teachers to prepare us for when our ideas really do pan out.
Ever hit a golf ball and have it dribble just a few yards forward? Or hit one right into the trees? What about those other magical times when you hit one right down the fairway. As BJ Palmer said, there's a big difference between doing several things just right vs several things just wrong. It's easy to realize that in the game of golf, but in the game of life, you don't get immediate feedback. You need to search for it!
Congruent means that you walk your talk, that you do the things you say you are going to do. It doesn't mean perfection, but a striving to be the best you can be, without sacrificing your ideals. This is far from an easy task today, with lots of things trying to lure us away from our mission. Reggie Gold exemplified someone who stuck to his purpose which was to, as BJ said, "sell chiropractic, serve chiropractic, and save chiropractic, even if it takes 20 lifetimes to do it."
The incidence of pediatric concussion has skyrocketed. A 2016 article showed that 10- to 14-year olds had an increase of 143% and 15- to 19-year olds had increases of 87%, between 2007 and 2014 (see reference below). Chiropractors are uniquely qualified to help kids with concussion, since our focus is the brain, spine and nerve system. Listen as Dr. Rubin discusses this during a webinar for the Pediatric Summit. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4989377/
Do we realize how all of us evolve from practically nothing? At one point we are but 2 microscopic cells. 40 trillion cells later and here we are! Amazing! That's how the universe works. It has the ability to change nothing into something. Dr. Rubin shows how this works in our lives too...if you look around, you can see examples of grass growing through cracks in the sidewalk, proving how with determination, you can overcome almost anything to succeed!
DD Palmer created chiropractic to be a drugless healing art. There are some in the profession who want to introduce the ability to prescribe pharmaceuticals. There is nothing wrong with the judicious use of prescription medication, but that is not how chiropractic was founded. There is already an entire profession that does this. BJ Palmer asked us to keep chiropractic pure. What do you think?
Where were you when 9/11 occurred? It was one of those moments of your life that you will never forget. Where you driving when you first heard the news, at work, school or home? How did you react? What did you do? How old where you? Some of my interns were kids in middle school then. Some of my staff were even younger. My son was 6 and still remembers it vividly. Today we honor the victims of 9/11 and those brave first responders who ran up the stairs as everyone else ran down. And we honor those who came from all over the world to help the rescue efforts, including chiropractors who adjusted first responders at no charge at a church near Ground Zero. Never ever forget 9/11.
Ever been to an iMax movie, where your entire sensory experience is taken over by a huge screen and loud sound? When a child comes into your practice with a confusing set of symptoms, that is where you must place yourself in order to fully appreciate where they are coming from. Are they ok with you examining them? Or frightened? Respect where the little child is at and approach them not from your perspective but theirs, and you will win them over.
Have you ever seen something from a certain angle, and then upon closer inspection, it looked very different? That's what it takes to be a pediatric chiropractor. Sometimes what you are looking at runs contrary to what the child's diagnosis is, and it is your job as a chiro-detective to come up with what is really going on with the child. They are NOT a diagnosis; they are a unique and special person with very specific ways to reach their particular nerve system. Studying paintings from MC Escher helps to open your perspective... look at some of his best work here: (https://www.mcescher.com/).
In the 1950's, dentistry was a 2nd rate health care profession. But they got together and create a mission to change the minds of America. By the 1990's dentistry had taken on a whole new image. Cosmetics, periodontics, orthodontics, and dentists are the premier non-medical health care providers. How did they do that? Chiropractic should learn a lesson from their dental friends...
The way chiropractic works is by putting an unexpected gentle force into the body, and the body then trying to make sense of that force by doing work on its own. The same is true with exercise, nutrition, meditation, yoga...all these unexpected health deposits make your brain and body think. Doing the same thing over and over again will produce less beneficial results. Do the unexpected. (Based on the video on YouTube showing a child with Autism delivered a graduation speech...see it here: https://youtu.be/mviCb2uFLCs)
How many times has a patient or friend said to you, "I'm fine" but you knew that something was 'up'? We have the unique ability to pick up on these cues and Dr. Rubin suggests you train your brain to be a radar for the subtle signs of distress. One way that this can be trained is by actively looking at works of art and seeing how many details you can notice in a short period of time.
Neurodiversity asks that we look at children with Autism as part of our diverse culture. We celebrate so many types of diversity but try to medicate Neurodiversity. Why is that? Every child has their unique gifts...it is our job to help each child find those gifts and foster an environment to nurture them to their fullest expression.
My father-in-law passed away last week, and in his passing, I was taught many lessons in how to live. He was an incredibly powerful and inspirational man with over 50 years practicing as a medical doctor and almost 60 years of marriage. Here are just a few of the things he showed us on the path of a well-lived life. Miss you, Dad.
Comparing works of art done by famous painters like Monet and Klee to art created by children with Autism reveals incredible similarities. These children have had little or no formal training but are able to create artwork that is masterful (see example here: https://irisgracepainting.com/). How is this talent in a 5 year old possible? Because she has an unfiltered connection to her gift. We all have gifts to share, no matter what is happening with us. What is your gift? And are you sharing it with the world?
Autism, ADHD, Concussions, Seizures, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's...all on the rise! Why? What is wrong with the brains today? Not just in kids with developmental or behavioral issues, but in adults with weakened brains too. Dr. Rubin postulates some new ideas as to what is happening and why in this well-researched and passionate talk.
How does one start a practice? Dr Rubin believes the best way is to start small and go big. Your practice members aren't coming to see you because you have the prettiest office in town. You are attracting them in droves because of who YOU are, how YOU take care of them, what YOU say to them. It's not about what's outside...it's about what inside that counts. Sound familiar? ADIO (above-down, inside out). It works to heal a body and to build a practice!
Have you ever read Stephenson's "The Art of Chiropractic?" Or Fred Barge's "Life Without Fear?" 2 classic chiropractic texts that are not very well known, but with Dr. Rubin's help, he brings them to life as he discusses them with the Logan University Philosophy Group. If you enjoy Stephenson's "Chiropractic Textbook" and Barges "Are You The Doctor?", then you'll love this...and if you are unfamiliar with either of these authors, then let us initiate you!
Have you ever looked at a picture of a distant galaxy? Then a picture of an electron cloud? They kinda look the same. Is that a coincidence? Not according to the String Theory, which says everything is connected. And if that is true, then the concept, "What you think about, comes about" makes a lot more sense. What you put your focus on, expands. Why? Because it's all connected? The universe leaves clues, and so does success!
Learning through Art series, Part 1. Dr. Rubin explores how looking at works of art can help improve your ability to diagnose. It started at Yale University Medical School, where they took 1st year med students to the Yale Art Gallery to discuss how to improve diagnosis skills by improving observational ability. If it can help med students it certainly can help chiropractic students!
Ultimately the most important thing that chiropractors do is not adjust the patient but to teach them, inspire them, give them hope. Dr. Rubin talks about how sometimes patients come in hearing over and over again from other well-meaning providers, teachers, and parents what's wrong with them. How about we focus on what's right with them? What they can do? What's possible? That's what hope is all about!
Chiropractor's are not back doctors or spine doctors. We are nerve system doctors and the spine is our doorway, our gateway into our practice member's nerve systems. Dr. Sid spoke about this in his 1999 Youtube video and it is just as relevant today as it was back then. Our ability to change someone's health trajectory comes from the thought that "nerves that fire together, wire together." The nerve system requires frequency intensity and duration to make change, and the spine is the conduit for chiropractic's ability to help restore homeostasis to the nerve system.
Some people think that terms like subluxation, chiropractic, and adjustment are antiquated. I read a blogpost recently that says that the word "subluxation represents everything that is wrong with our profession." I respectfully disagree. It is important to honor our past as we move into the future. Obviously how a subluxation is defined is different today that 1895, but our job as nerve system doctors hasn't changed. Free the body from interference, see if we can help co-create the best health possible for that particular person. The salutogenic model is the key to the future of healthcare. Listen on!
Dr. Seuss said in his book, "Oh the places you'll go" that 'your mountain is waiting.' What does that mean? It means to get to the top, you will have to climb mountains. Some mountains are easier than others. Some mountains are downright challenging! But what choice do we have? The mountains are there. Now go out and climb!
This is the 8th in the series of Visual Diagnostic Improvement podcasts that started back with Episode 203. Upper extremities can give us lots of clues about the child not just if they have obvious issues but also subtle signs as well. Listen as Dr. Rubin takes us on around the arm to finish off this series. Starting next week tune in to a new series about pediatric adjusting.
Visually diagnosing lower extremity issues is an important part of practice and can be a confusing one. We are constantly getting questions like, "Is that normal?" or "Is that ok?" Dr. Rubin will guide you on what to look for whether you are a chiropractor or an interested parent.
Chiropractic suffers from an extreme lack of confidence. The entire profession is in a reactive state, probably from years of bullying. But now that we have so much evidence and science backing us up, shouldn't we be ok with our philosophical underpinnings and shout it from the rooftops. People want what we do and more importantly need what we have! We need to believe in ourselves not just personally but as a profession!
Ayn Rand asked the question, "Philosophy...who needs it?" The answer is: everybody! In order to have a mission or a purpose, you need to know your philosophy, your reason why. Victor Frankl stated, "When you know your 'why', you can endure almost any 'how." This is a recording of a webinar with the Logan University College of Chiropractic Philosophy Club from February 2018.
When you look examine a child, whether you are a parent or a doctor, you must rely not just on what is said but what your eyes tell you about the situation. There are so many clues that words won't give you but your visual ability will. Listen to this as Dr. Rubin continues to explain how to improve your visual strategies.
Dr. Rubin takes you for a tour of the variety of skin related issues you might encounter in a pediatric chiropractic office. From rash diseases to food reactions, hear how Dr. Rubin describes what you might see whether you are a family based chiropractor or you are an interested parent.
Trajectory implies direction. Where is the child headed? In an article from the journal Pediatrics in 2012 titled, Six Developmental Trajectories Characterize Children With Autism. I'd like to suggest that there are other trajectories, and one of them is children under chiropractic care. We see miracles everyday and that was one trajectory that was not spoken about in the Pediatric article. Listen for more!
Disruptive is a favorite buzz-word lately. From our perspective, we like doing things that nobody else does, recognizing things no one else sees, and because of that, get results that most don't. Bill Esteb, one of my favorite chiropractic speakers (who actually is not a chiropractor but is a totally bought-in patient), had a great talk at the ICPA Family Wellness Summit in March, titled "Disruptive Chiropractic." After his amazing speech on Friday night of the Summit, I was so enthused that these steps for Disruptive Pediatrics poured out of me. Check them out!
Do you walk your talk? Do you do as you say you're going to do? Dr. Rubin explains how Dr. Sid Williams changed his life in July 1993. If you ever wondered how you can go from unfocused to laser focused, from uninspired to highly motivated, from being an interested observer to being a fully engaged participant in this game called life, then listen as Dr Rubin outlines how Dr Sid inspired him to truly follow his dreams.
The Opioid Epidemic is one of the worst man-made challenges in recent history. An article in the journal Pediatrics explains that this horrible crisis is effecting our kids too, especially in the 12-17 year old category (see article here: https://bit.ly/2thq3ut). Listen in on the beginning of class as Dr. Rubin tackles this serious issue.
If you live in the US, then you live in the most beautiful and advanced country in the world. Why would we not want to take care of it? When walking into my office every morning, I am always picking up trash. Why? The great speaker Jim Rohn taught us that the environment counts, that little things like picking up the trash make a big difference. Pay it forward and pass it on!
If you haven't read "As a Man Thinketh..." by James Allen, you are probably missing one of the greatest small books of the early 20th century. It is incredibly motivating, and even though it was written over 100 years ago, it is still just as relevant today. Dr. Rubin explains the power of this short book in a passionate talk to students who are about to graduate. The book is available for free here: https://asamanthinketh.net/
When you are driving, the only thing that is stopping your car from crossing over into oncoming traffic is a double yellow line. How do we make sure we are staying on our side of the line? What do we do when we encounter other professionals who cross the line? Dr. Rubin gives 3 examples of 'line crossing.'
Our brains have 2 sides; left and right. BJ Palmer argued that our brains are also polarized as Innate vs. Educated. Part of our brain's function is to use feelings, hunches, and intuition to guide us in making best decisions. He called that Above-down, inside-out. The other part of our brain is designed to download information from outside in. Both are necessary to succeed, but don't let one get in the way of the other.
Is Autism a sort of brain injury? Are the neurodegenerative diseases seen in adults such as Alzheimer's & Parkinson's and the issues seen in concussions all related? Are there disconnections in the brain that are chemically, genetically or traumatically induced? Dr Rubin discusses this theory and backs it up with research.
Most people never think about the importance of the cranium (or skull) especially in children, unless it is directly injured. Few people understand that there are 12 pairs of cranial nerves that exit from various small holes in the skull that control things as vital as your eyes, ears, facial expressions, digestion, even your emotional state! Listen as Dr. Rubin explains why all kids should have their cranium checked.
Eyes truly are the windows to the brain. You can tell so much about someone by looking in their eyes, not only about how they are feeling but how they are thinking. Are both eyes focused in the same direction? Do they move together? It's not just about reading a Snellen Eye Chart and getting the letters correct. It's about processing...is the brain processing what the eyes are seeing? Listen in to Class #3.
If you haven't read Think and Grow Rich, The Richest Man in Babylon, and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, then you have possibly missed 3 of the most life changing books. Each one touches on topics that no other books before or since have reached in quite the same way. Dr. Rubin gives you an excited reason to check each one of them out from your local library or buy all three on Amazon!
Sid-isms? Dr. Rubin taught a philosophy course at Life University from 2002-2003 that included what was affectionately known at the school as Sid-isms, or specific quotes that Dr. Sid used to say during his assembly's or other lectures. Dr. Rubin describes several of his favorite Sid-isms and how they can be applicable to your life today.
How do you prepare yourself for your day? Do you arrive for work at 8:58am sprinting through the door? Or do you get to work early and meditate, pray, visualize, breathe, and truly prepare yourself for your day? You will notice you are far more productive and approach the days ups and downs with more calmness if you give yourself the gift of 'mental floss' before you let the whirlwind of the day get past you.
Are you really seeing what you think you are seeing? What is behind your vision is your interpretation of what you are looking at. That makes up a lot of filters. How you look at things does make a difference. Listen to Dr. Rubin in the 2nd of 8 installments regarding building your visual abilities.
"We chiropractors work with the subtle substance of the soul" starts the poetic description of how the body works in BJ Palmer's "This Inner Power Speaks." What does that mean? How do you describe what you do to someone? Do you describe the 'what' in what you do or the 'why'? The why is something far more compelling and is what builds businesses and referrals. What's your why?
What's the big idea? It is as simple as this: when you eat your breakfast or lunch, how does that sandwich turn into bones and eyes and stomach lining? How does your body know to breathe in and out? How does your heart know to keep pumping? That is the big idea...as Dr. Chuck Ribley would say, "the power that made the body, heals the body." The body doesn't heal itself...the power that made it heals it. As BJ Palmer said, "Get the big idea, and all else follows."
The book, Visual Thinking Strategies, inspired Dr. Rubin to begin each one of his elective classes viewing different pictures or videos showing a variety of disorders, from chicken pox and measles to Autism and ADHD. Listen to lesson 1 of 8 in this series!
Your body is magical! Ever get a paper cut? What happens? You bleed, and then it stops. Who/what did that? Isn't that amazing? The body has this incredible strength behind it, but so many of us don't know how to tap into that potential. Dr. Rubin uses the analogy based on the book, Good to Great, to show how we can all have trajectories towards greatness.
A child comes to our office and looks at the plastic spine model and exclaims excitedly, "Is that a spine?" When I answered yes, and asked if she wanted to hold it, she said, "I can hold the spine?" She was so filled with respect and reverence, and it made me wonder when do we adults lose that sort of enthusiasm? What do you look at now and say 'wow' about? Do you notice the beautiful sunrise as you're driving to work? Do you look up at the stars at night before you go into your house or apartment? What about the gorgeous spring daffodils or Bradford Pear trees? It's time for all of us to spend more time looking for 'wow.'
Honored to be asked to be the graduation speaker for Life University's March 2018 class, Dr. Rubin shares 5 lessons from an early experience with a challenging pediatric case and relates that to what the new graduates might be facing in their practices. Some of the lessons came from mentors like Dr. Sid Williams and Dr. Larry Webster, others from almost 30 years of experience.
There's a shift that has to occur when you go from student to doctor, from employee to employer, from worker to manager or supervisor. You've got to shift 'hats.' This is not an easy shift, since you might be so used to and so conditioned to be a student or employee or worker that switching roles is uncomfortable. To get past that, start trying on the 2nd hat while still wearing the first. Think like a doctor when you are a student. Think like an employer when you are an employee. Think like a supervisor when you are a worker. This way you are preparing yourself for the ultimate role you want. Just like the old saying, "to be, act as if!"
When you are asked to be on a TV or radio interview, it is very easy to get caught up in answering their questions in the way you think they want you to. Dr. Rubin suggests it is better to answer the questions the way YOU want to answer them. This is especially important on TV when the camera is rolling. What image do you want to portray for the profession? This is even applicable for job interviews.
Something that is easy hard means it's easy to do in the moment but it makes things harder later (for example, eating fried chicken and ice cream everyday is easy but in the long run is not a good idea). Hard easy refers to something that is hard to do initially but makes your life easier later (such as starting an exercise program...hard to do initially but the improvements in your life later are extraordinary). What is your life filled with? Hard easy or easy hard?
BJ Palmer wrote "what greater joy hath man" in 1961, but those words still ring true for today. There is no greater joy that a person can have than to help another, to be in service to someone who needs help. That is the everyday blessing of being a chiropractor, but anyone can be of service, anytime. Even anonymously picking up trash off the street as you walk by it is being in service. The Rotary Club has the most apropos motto: Service above Self.
Couldn't make the Family Wellness Summit in Washington DC in February 2018? These are 2 talks delivered by Dr. Rubin, the first about a challenging pediatric case, and the 2nd is answers the question: Is Humanity De-evolving? Maybe we are supposed to de-evolve to re-evolve? Is the new health revolution a re-evolution? Is it possible that evolution is happening before our eyes and we are in the midst of it?
Have you ever been thanked for doing something really nice that you did years ago and hardly remember? But this gesture was so important to the other person that they remember! That's a lollypop moment. Maybe if more of us live our lives trying to create more lollypop moments, the world would be a better place?
The Peace Prayer is just as powerful today as it was when it was written hundreds of years ago by St. Francis, Dr. Wayne Dyer explains in his book "There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem." Dr. Dyer suggests that each sentence can be used as a method to change the way you are thinking. As Dr. Dyer was fond of saying, "If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." Dr. Rubin applies this to the problems we all face today, and how we can turn many of them around by applying the concepts in this prayer.
Learn the principles, become more of a principal (definition = the highest ranking person). BJ Palmer took the new principles of chiropractic and through his determination and persistence traveled around the world becoming the 'principal' spokesperson for chiropractic until his passing. Dr Rubin asks the question: would chiropractic survive if you had to be the principal spokesperson? Why not become that person now? Let's make sure we take the principles to the people!
Imagine this scenario...BJ Palmer is alive today and he has a 30 second spot commercial he just made for the Superbowl! What would he have done? Do you think he'd be the master of marketing in the 21st century like he was the master on TV and Radio in its infancy in the early to mid 1900's? Listen to this live recorded talk in front of a fired up audience!
Max Living invited Dr. Rubin to present for 3 hours a special pediatric presentation, and this was the 7 minute intro to that inspiring talk! Every man, woman and child should get adjusted, and the word every doesn't leave anybody out!
In the last few weeks, a viral post created a sensation out of Elderberry and now not a single store around has it. We've been recommending it for years to boost kids immune systems, but suddenly everyone wants it. Meanwhile, the 18th school shooting this year occurs and politicians talk about 'improving our mental health.' What would improve the health of this country is not an outside in approach but an inside out approach! How do we do that? Listen in!
So many of us say, "I don't have time to work out, read, meditate, do yoga, etc." Where did we come up with this idea that we have to work out for an hour or not work out at all? Suggestion: How about starting at 10 minutes? Same with reading, meditation, yoga, the list goes on and on. Why are we stuck on 'all or nothing?' New idea: just get started! No time? Do 5 minutes of yoga! No time? Read for 5 minutes! Too busy? Can you carve 10 minutes out of your day to work out? Even it is just walking in circles in your basement or apartment? Just get started!
The concept of accumulative survival value comes from BJ Palmer. He describes accumulative constructive and destructive survival values. What direction is your life heading? Are you set on an accumulative path or destructive? It's all based on your choices. The choices you make now determine not just your tomorrow but your 20+ years from now! Learn how to focus on accumulative survival values today.
Ram Dass said, "Be here now." How many of us are physically 'here' but mentally somewhere else? Some call this mindfulness. I prefer the term present time consciousness (or PTC for short). The question, "where are you?" then takes on a new meaning. You may be 'here', but are you really 'here?' Dr. Rubin will explain techniques that help you build your ability to have a laser focus.
BJ Palmer asked in The Story of That Something' the following question: What will you do? How do you know what you are doing is the right thing? Trust your innate, your feelings, your intuition, your instinct. Belief in yourself and what your gut tells you is right!
"We chiropractors work with the subtle substance of the soul," is how one of BJ Palmer's most famous chapters in his groundbreaking book, The Bigness of the Fellow Within. BJ speaks of chiropractic philosophy in his 1949 text, but it is really a life philosophy, that speaks of vitalism (there is an internal force that animates us that is different than the force that is in, for example, a rock)and wholism (that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts). Listen as Dr. Rubin explains the deeper meaning of life philosophy.
What was your favorite childhood book growing up when you were first learning how to read? That might say a lot about you and who you are today! So says one of the contributors to Tim Ferriss' great new book, Tribe of Mentors. Dr Rubin picked "The Lorax", signifying his commitment to the healthcare of the kids. If you held that last seed in your hands, would it survive? Would new trees grow because of you? What's your favorite children's book and why?
Several people have been amazing mentors and one that Dr Rubin repeatedly talks about is Dr Sid Williams. Dr Sid had these great lines like "Accept the message in full faith" or "see the fields white with harvest." Listen to the amazing vision Dr Sid had and see if you can catch the feeling!
Jim Rohn's classic story of sowing and reaping uses the example of the famous saying, "An apple a day..." He says that eating an apple a day is easy to do, but it's also easy NOT to do. It's all about discipline. Success is about doing simple things that produce positive results over and over and over again.
Every year, millions of people make "New Year's Resolutions." And every year, most of those millions are feeling guilty by January 15th about not sticking with those resolutions. But as Tony Robbins talked about in his New Year's video (https://youtu.be/jL5jKptjIQw), are we REALLY resolved towards these resolutions? To be resolute means to be purposeful and unwavering. Dr Rubin helps you develop that mindset.
How many times have we heard the comment, "I can't possibly achieve that because I'm_____(fill in the blank here)." Examples: Too old, too young, not enough education, overqualified, not enough experience. One of Dr. Rubin's was "I'm just a little guy from a little town." But listening to the great motivators like Zig Ziglar, Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, and amazing chiropractors like Drs. Sid Williams, Jim Sigafoose, Dick Santo totally changed the mindset to, "why not me, why not now?" Dr. Rubin asks the same of you now: Why not you? Why not now?
How many of us see something and then realize there is soooo much more to what we are looking at? Yale University Medical School started several years ago bringing their 1st year Med students to their Art Museum to improve their Visual Diagnostic Abilities (see article here: https://goo.gl/ZcjA6C). Dr Rubin has started that in one of his classes at Life University, based on that article and the book, Visual Thinking Strategies (https://goo.gl/fCntNp). Listen in on the intro to the first class.
A powerful TED talk by Janine Shepard is titled, "A Broken Body is not Broken." What a powerful concept. It goes along with the concept, "It's not how many times you get knocked down but how many times you get up that counts." During the challenging times, remember, as Zig Ziglar used to say, "you were born to win, designed to win, endowed with the seeds of greatness."
Ever wonder why Colgate toothpaste boxes read, "Go see your dentist twice a year," and not "click on this link for the Colgate dentist near you?" Because they are trying to promote ALL of dentistry! Not just the ones who signed up for a certain zip code. This podcast originally aired over 1 year ago, and is the 2nd most listened to in Chirocast. Listen and tell us what you think!
The Power of Now is an amazing book by Eckhart Tolle, one that should be on your must-read list. This podcast is by far the most listened to in our 'collection', and even though it originally aired almost 2 years ago, it is just as relevant today as we embark on the next 365 days. The way to reach your goals is to first set them, then to live in the present moment with intense focus or present time consciousness to achieve them. No better time than right now to listen to this powerful message!
This is YOUR life. You get to create it exactly as you want it. My father, who passed away from Alzheimer's in 2003, asked me everyday when he came home from the job he hated to "promise me that you will find a job that you love." Everyday he asked me to promise that to him. I am so lucky that I followed his advice. I do what I love every day at it makes such a difference! Can you make next year the best year of your life? Here's how!
The brain is for movement? Most of us believe that the brain is for thinking! But neuroscientist Dr Daniel Wolpert proves that the key function of the brain is to make the body move. Life IS motion! Even our cells have motion...even the atoms in our cells are circling around! Listen as Dr. Rubin explains why.
Are you just trying out life? Just putting your big toes in the water to see if it's warm enough? Or do you jump in, do a 'cannonball', and as Dr. Dick Santo was fond of saying, 'go all in?' During this holiday season, it is time to create your goals for next year and get ready to go all in to the new year, full throttle, all systems go!
Neurodiversity is the belief that we should be accepting of all kinds of neurological functioning. ADHD, Autism, LD, SPD; these children are not DIS-abled but Differently-abled! Shouldn't we help grow our children's confidence, no matter what label they happen to be given? Who knows if your child is the next Temple Grandin (who has Autism), Michael Phelps (who had ADHD as a child), or Stephen Speilberg (who has dyslexia). Maybe their differences MADE them who they were?
How do you decide things in your relationship? How about a 3 tier hierarchy for everything you do, in order to 'pass the test?' That's what Drs Drew and Lisa have done for years that they credit as one of the pillars of their 27+ year relationship. Listen in on what they call the "GFC Philosophy."
Sometimes the poets just say it better than the average written word. Dr Rubin features Anyway, by Mother Teresa, and The Cookie Thief, by Valerie Cox, and then offers poignant interpretation to the deeper meaning and lessons he gained from their inspiration.
We look at developmental milestones as a very specific tool to measure the progress of a child's maturation progress. Just the same way a computer turns on in a very specific manner, and the time it takes to turn on is usually within a few seconds each time, the same is true with milestones. Dr Rubin gives an extended talk about the importance of this tool and asks everyone to participate.
In an instant, everything can change. You never know when that instant is, so Dr Rubin suggests living the best life you can, going all out, full throttle, 110%. There is no time like the present. This moment is all we really have. Now its gone. Live each moment on purpose.
Happily married for 26+ years, Dr Rubin and his wife share secrets to a creating a successful marriage. It takes work, daily work, not just during the courtship but every day. The title is based on a book Dr Lisa Rubin is currently writing, entitled The Relationship Scrapbook. This is a new format for this podcast...please let us know your thoughts about this on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/rubinfamilychiropractic/ or email us at rubinchiropractic@gmail.com.
One Cause, One Correction? What does that mean? When you boil it all down, there is only 1 problem that causes health issues, and that is dysfunction. An organ, muscle, bone, or other anatomical part is dysfunctioning, and the answer is to get that body part back to optimal function. There may be somewhere between 13,000 - 30,000 named diseases, yet they are all due to a malfunction. What's the one correction? Getting the body to restore homeostasis to that area! What's homeostasis? Balance and equilibrium . Listen to find out more!
Where does healing come from? If you cut your finger, what happens? You bleed, and then you stop bleeding. The cut heals itself! How? It is truly a miracle of the human body...this innate intelligence inside us that allows our bodies to heal and grow stronger IF we remove the interferences! Learn how to remove the interferences to your healing potential.
Big History, a TED talk, helped Dr Rubin think about how important history is in everyone's life. Newton's laws of physics explain how a body in motion tends to stay in motion, yet that also explains how success works. Success tends to breed more success, but lack of success unfortunately leads to more lack of success. How do we break out of that pattern? Look at your Big History and then change the pattern!
Mass shootings seem to be an American phenomenon. According to a recent NY Times article, the US is the leader in world democracy but also has more mass shootings than any other country per capita. Dr. Joe Dispenza explains the old saying, "Nerves that Fire Together, Wire Together." Dr Rubin points out that saying applies in either direction... nerves either fire good OR fire bad! Listen as Dr Rubin explains this and how it relates in the 2nd part of his mass shootings podcasts. Link to the NY Times article: goo.gl/KmcKjT
In the wake of the Texas Church Massacre, Dr Rubin asks the question that BJ Palmer asked in 1949. Whence (or exactly when) does greatness come? For some people, like Oprah or Bill Gates, it comes from doing great things for humanity. For people like Mother Teresa, it comes from doing great service. But for some people, the only way they feel that they can 'reach greatness' is by holding a weapon in their hands. Then they 'feel great'. What can we do about this? Listen as Dr. Rubin brings new clarity to this terrifying issue.
The Polyvagal Theory, as introduced by Dr. Stephen Porges, has been instrumental in Dr. Rubin’s formulating many of his current ideas. Dr Rubin recently revisited the thoughts from this astounding book, especially in consideration of where our species is going. Are we really evolving? Are we as human race moving up to the next level, or are we downshifting? Dr. Rubin asks that you be the judge.
Albert Einstein famously said, "The only thing that is constant is change." Isn't that the truth? Dr Rubin discusses what that means as you encounter constant obstacles in your life. What will you do when you face these challenges? Hit them head on or turn away? As the great 'sage' from the movie Galaxy Quest once said, "Never give up. Never surrender!"
In the last episode from Live in Houston, Dr. Rubin explores the question: How does innate contact you? Is innate obvious or subtle? Is it easy to contact innate? Based on BJ Palmer's story of how innate contacts education. Includes an interesting Q & A at the end.
Dr. Sid Williams had a saying that he drilled into our heads every seminar. "Work is fun...I love to work!" We are so blessed to have found a career where that is 100% true. If you fall in love with your work, then you don't ever work a day in your life. I go to the office to play every day! Learn how to make this possible in your life.
BJ Palmer in his 1949 book, The Bigness of the Fellow Within, talks about Slipping & Checking in the game of golf vs the game of life. Easy to tell when you've slipped in golf. The poor outcome is automatic (ball heads into the woods, drops in the lake, etc). In life it's not that straightforward. You can slip and slip and slip and not know it or realize it for months, years or ever! Dr. Rubin explains how he uses slipping & checking in his life. This is the 2nd in the series of 3 lectures Dr. Rubin did live in Houston, Texas. Please note there is a question at first that takes about 1 minute before Dr. Rubin begins the podcast.
I will are the two magic words. Dr. Rubin then asks the question, "what will you do?" What will you do with all the gift you've been given? All the talent that you have? Are you planning your life? Are you designing your life? Don't let anybody else create your dream. Start now, start here, start today! Listen on.
Dr. Rubin live in Houston, Texas, speaking to an excited group of students about chiropractic philosophy. Chiro philosophy is about living your whole life, going all out, being innately driven and serving a higher purpose. At the end Dr. Rubin fields a few questions from the audience. This is part 1 of a 3 part series, to be released 1x week.
Dr Rubin was inspired by Joe A, a student, who recently asked "what really made Starbucks successful?" Was it there coffee? Or was it the experience that they created surrounding the coffee? The same question is asked about chiropractic. What makes a successful chiropractic office? Or a successful any sort of business? It's the experience, the personality of the business that makes the biggest difference. Listen as Dr. Rubin takes the Starbucks experience one step further.
Byron Katie in her book, Loving What Is, describes that "If you argue with reality, you will lose 100% of the time." So many of us question our past and live a life of 'shoulda's & coulda's' rather than focus on the only thing we can change right now, and that's our mind. "To be, act as if!"
122 years and this is what we have become? How do we grow the next 100 years to make them so much better than our first century? What should we be focusing on? Dr Rubin, in front of a very enthusiastic crowd at the GCC Bonfire Philosophy Night, gave chiropractic a picture of why we do what we do, and how to get to the next level! Just an FYI, the first 30 seconds of this talk are an announcement made by the GCC president after Dr Rubin was introduced so the sound quality is much lower during those opening moments.
There is so much to accomplish in this crazy fast paced hectic life we lead. But why is it that the busiest people are the ones who always seem to be able to get the most done? It might be because they have their 'why' figured out. What you do in life is not as important as the why you do what you do! Learn that secret today!
Many of us know the beautiful and haunting melody of the famous U2 song, in which Bono sings "how long to sing this song?" Events in Las Vegas this past week made Dr Rubin think about that song. How long do we have to sing the song of sorrow and tragedy and heartbreak? How many more people have to sacrifice their lives before enough people decide to make changes? Dr. Rubin thinks the time is now. What do you think? Students… This message is especially for you. You are our country's future. We need you to stand up and take charge and change our America. The people currently in power certainly aren't doing it.
Malala Yousafzai is the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Her story is an amazing one. After viewing her Nobel acceptance speech, Dr Rubin was compelled to talk about her amazing fortitude and resilience, and also relate it to how important it is to work to help what Malala calls 'the voiceless children.' This podcast was originally posted in May of 2016.
Have you ever been in a place where everyone around you thought you were absolutely crazy for what you were about to do, but you went ahead and did it anyway? In this story about the 'Valley of the Blind', Dr Rubin explains, through a fictional story originally based on the work of HG Wells and retold by Reggie Gold, one person was lead down a path where he had to make a choice, and he chose to take the path less traveled. He chose to go against what 'everybody' else said, and do what was right in his heart. Where is your path taking you?
BJ Palmer's most immortalized words are from his book, The Glory of Going On: "You have in your possession a sacred trust. Guard it well." What are you doing to guard it well? Are you honoring that sacred trust? That's a decision you make complete every day, or go off the path every day. Like BJ's message several podcasts ago, from The Story of Slipping and Checking, the time to change things is right now. Do you know what your sacred trust is? Are you guarding it well?
Have you wondered why there is so much talk about concussion lately? When I was a kid growing up in the 1960s there was hardly any concussion, hardly any autism, hardly any ADHD. What is happening to our children these days? Listen as Dr. Rubin gives his thoughts about this pervasive issue.
Ever wonder what allows those Innate thought flashes to appear out of nowhere while you're driving, running, we're taking a shower? Are you the kind of person who listens to those thought flashes, or ignores them? Do you write down the ideas given to you by those thought flashes? Listen as Dr. Rubin explains BJ Palmer's philosophy on how to best allow the innate mind to contact the educated mind.
Do you remember Eric Clapton's great hit song "Change the World?" That is Dr. Rubin's latest podcast topic, regarding the impact Dr. Larry Webster had on him and had on chiropractic. Is it true that one person can change the world? Why not you? Why not now?
Why are we seeing an increase in the number of water catastrophes around the planet in the last 10 to 20 years? A recent article in the Economist magazine shows us this trend is getting worse every year. If we remember that human beings are made up of more than 70% water, maybe humanity has a little bit of blame for the increase in these water related disasters? Listen in as Dr. Rubin explains an intriguing theory he first heard about from Dr. Emoto in The Hidden Messages of Water.
BJ Palmer, in his book The Bigness of the Fellow Within, has a fabulous chapter titled The Story of Slipping and Checking. In it he talks about how, during the game of golf, it is very easy for you to notice when you've made a mistake. It is instantly apparent. But in the game of life, it is not that easy. Listen to Dr. Rubin as he talks about what slipping checking means for your life.
If we don't help the kids, who's going to? This statement stands for everybody, not just for pediatric chiropractors. This statement applies to parents, family members, teachers, therapists, coaches, anybody who deals with kids. If we don't stand for the kids, who will? Listen as Dr. Rubin explains the new urgency we must have when it comes down to taking care our legacy, the children.
The United States experienced its first cross country solar eclipse in almost 100 years a few days ago. If you were a amongst one of the lucky ones in the 70 mile wide strip of totality, you saw an amazing spectacle. But elsewhere like in Atlanta Georgia, even though the sun was 97 percent blotted out, there was hardly any change in the amount of sunlight that we can see. What that showed us was that 97% does not equal 100%. Listen on to explain why that is so important.
Ever look inside an acorn? Is there a little tree inside it? Or just a bunch of dust? How does that bunch of dust turn into a 100 foot tree? If it's planted in fertile ground, fertilized, watered, gets plenty of sun, then it grows into exactly what it's supposed to be. What's inside of you? Are you planted in fertile ground? Are you taking in the right metaphorical food, water, sun to help you grow into what you should be and could be? Listen on!
There are many natural laws that we need to follow on the path to success. In the past the law of attraction has been spoken about. The law of sowing and reaping and the law of averages is next on the list. As the old saying goes, "as you sow, so also shall you reap" means more today than ever before. It's easy to get discouraged but we have to understand that not every seed that we plant will produce fruit. It is up to us to sow and sow and sow, and then the law of averages says that we will reap. Because we know if we follow natural laws, they always work. Sometimes not in the timeframe we want, but they always work.
Where are you right now? Are you living on 'someday isle?" A place where you will get to your dreams when you get 'a round tuit?' Waiting for all your ducks to be lined up, all your i's dotted and t's crossed? Or are you living your dreams? Finding that mission and going for it, all out, 100%? "Someday isle" is a nice place, your feet are up, and you are coasting. But the only way to coast is where? Downhill! Time to look up and get up!
In order to build a building you have to build it twice. You first build it in your mind, create all the plans, order all the nails and screws and nuts and bolts and wood and spackle, and then you build the building. You can't go out and just say "all right, I think today I'm going to make myself a nice new building" without having completely designed it first. Jim Rohn talks about the same concept with your life. What are you doing to make sure the life you create is your life and not someone else's? Are you doing the little things that will make a big difference? Make yourself a life blueprint.
In the latest issue of Dynamic Chiropractic, there is an article that is a front-page headline talking about how we should change the name of chiropractic to keep us up with the times. The author claims that the reason chiropractic is where it is is because the name 'chiropractic' is equivalent to a tradesman versus a doctor. It is my contention that the reason chiropractic is where we are has nothing to do with its name, but has to do what we have done in the last hundred plus years to dig us in the hole that we're stuck in now. Dr. Rubin offers a way out.
We've all heard of Obamacare; now there's an attempt at Trumpcare. Dr. Rubin has created a third alternative to the healthcare crisis that exists today. What happens if there is a universal healthcare system that can truly provide health to their patients and not just sickness or crisis care? Does our current system really promote health or merely patch up sickness? Is it possible to have a plan that actually creates a healthier society? Could such a thing exist? Listen on
One of Dr. Sid Williams favorite metaphors was 'dropping keys'. In this episode, Dr. Rubin talks about the three principles of 'dropping the keys' and how those three principles relate to not only building a successful chiropractic practice but can also relate to building a successful life. Dropping the keys is not as simple as it looks, and its subtle deeper meanings can help elevate your life and help you aim for the greatness that you deserve.
We need to create a sense of urgency in our country about the issues that really matter. One of the issues that really matters is healthcare. The problem is not how does one get insurance coverage. The problem really is what is being covered. Everybody should have insurance coverage, and the focus of healthcare should be health and not treating sickness. As the definition says, health is not the absence of sickness. There are people both in the government and in healthcare that would rather focus on treating symptoms than on building the healthiest body possible. Listen in as Dr. Rubin describes one critical issue we face today in healthcare.
When we were in school, we all studied about evolution. We all know about Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest. But today it looks like the human species is de-evolving. Babies are supposed to be able to eat, poop and sleep, but so many of them have troubles with these basic survival mechanisms. If they have trouble with the most simplest basic things that everybody must do in order to thrive, what's the next step? The human species is not following its path of continual evolution. What can be done to change this de-evolution? Listen on!
Being gluten free & dairy free for 20+ years gives Dr. Rubin the edge when discussing this controversial topic, since it is part of his lifestyle and not just some trendy fad that he's recently started or read about. Listen as the fully engaged audience at Whole Foods enjoys the stories and advice that experience provides, especially relating to the feeding of picky eaters and traveling. This podcast is a bit longer than usual, about 33 minutes.
Are you going through life or are you preparing for life? Are you spending your time living vicariously through other peoples lives by wasting a lot of precious moments on social media? Or are you sharpening your sword and preparing for battle every single day? Are you getting yourself ready for every encounter that you'll have now and in the future, or are you merely treading water waiting for the day to end? Are you designing your life or merely living it? Listen to this podcast and be inspired to take more action than you ever have before!
One of the most profound statements Dr. Sid Williams ever said is, You've got to care so much that you don't care at all." When Dr. Rubin first heard that, he had no idea what it meant. But the more he pondered on it and discussed it with his wife and colleagues, the more he understood the wisdom behind that brief sentence. Listen to this glimpse of the philosophy of Dr. Sid and what it can mean to your life.
How do you excel at whatever occupation you choose? Most would answer: study, read, follow the path left by the greats before us, and all of those answers are right. But the 13 year old boy that created the term 'hackschooling' and was featured in a TED talk suggests one step better: hacking. He doesn't mean the kind of hacking that is going on today, from foreign nationals hacking into computers of huge corporations or even governments. What he is talking about is blazing new paths in time-trodden careers. Think about the iPhone. Nobody was crying out for it. But Steve Jobs created something that has now permeated the entire world, by his 'hacking' into design and engineering that previously was not thought of for a cell phone!
Are we ready for the next generation of chiropractic? Are we ready for the next evolution? As Pam Grout, author of the E squared books talks about, it's time for a change and so many people are ready for it. Who is going to be the group leading the change? It's got to be us. It's got to be now.
Whose language are you speaking? Are you speaking what THEY want or what YOU want? Are you creating the life of YOUR dreams or of THEIR dreams for you? We have to pay attention to the voices that are in our heads and ask the key question...whose voice is that? Is that my voice? BJ Palmer used to call it the 'wee small voice' inside. The loud voices, those of fear, rejection, hate, they are not the ones to follow. What does your heart tell you? Listen to Dr. Rubin tell stories of 2 remarkable children and how their lessons can affect your life.
Do you realize how powerful the human body is? Do you realize how powerful the human brain is? Do you realize that we are not stuck with our brains and the bodies as they exist right now? We can change! We can change any thing at any time! How? With the right input! And the right amount of time that those inputs or put in. Each one of us has ability to change his or her genetic expression. You may not be able to change your actual DNA, but you can't change how the DNA is expressed in your body each and every day. If even one out of those three ideas does not jive with the GFC philosophy, no matter what that idea is, is canned. You need all three to proceed. Learn how you can use the system for yourself.
The Polyvagal theory is one of most revolutionary ideas to come across chiropractic and neuroscience in the last 25 years. The Polyvagal theory is an elegant way of explaining how the nervous system does not work as a balanced system but as a hierarchical system. Come learn from one of the top pediatric chiropractors on how he applies these theories to his practice.

And more importantly, because every time you're not successful, a child suffers because you didn't adjust them!"

Next, finding a chiropractor and having the adjustments bring you back up the 2nd side of the N.
