I really do feel like I'm in a Month of Modular©. In a kind-of continuation of yesterday's jam, which was built around a Behringer Crave (horrible name/ great synth) into the finally-built tape and microsound music machine, today I brought in the teenage engineering PO 400. Did some semi-random patching on it this morning and got a cool square wave repeating oscillator from the lfo. And immediately jumped up, put it into the tape and microsound music machine, recorded a short reel. The piece starts out fully right on the Morphagene then goes to about 60/40. Some pretty interesting sounds here.
Finally finished cobbling together a tape and microsounds make noise rack. Here is: acoustic guitar thru said system and over a drone I made with the same acoustic guitar, live to "tape." A fella could work this set-up for a lifetime and never come up with the same thing twice.
Used the same modular system for yesterday which is morphagene, qpas, and mimeophon + a behringer crave. I think a lot of people look down on the crave (horrible name), but it's wonderful. Oddly the crave sits better on the desk than a Moog mother 32. Like a cascade down from my skiff case. So anyway, I went with the basic patch that the crave comes with backed by a reel which started as an acoustic guitar. Same reel from yesterday just went a little deeper smudge-wise.
trying to do something not so sleep-inducing for am meditations. the idea here is to have enough interesting things to listen to with just enough going on. + occasional harshness really centers (aka wakes your a$$ up). wrapped up listening to the music-this' all that's going on for 12 minutes. acoustic guitar > morphagene > qpass > mimeophon

I've been really trying to combine acoustic instruments with electronic and voice and wanting to bring all that together. So it happened I forgot my computer at work, and I did this whole thing on the OP-1 field (think modern, all-in-one 4-track). DJ mix picked from last week’s tracks. Went with days/order 1, 5 3, 2, 4, and an extra snippet made on the 6th. (None of these really have names yet.) Wrapped it with the almost-lost classic “Autumn Winds” from the back catalog. Live and cold as ballz from the Growlery, formerly known as clubOD ii, but still the smallest club in the Austin ETJ. More notes etc.:Last January I made 34-some-odd tracks in 31 days, so the post review process was like the biggest sink full of dishes you have ever seen. Hard to even start the process. Breaking it ups like this gives me a bit of a rest, but more importantly I can see what I’ve done while I’m still familiar with the tracks and their creation. This does all kinds of good things, is also a new track given the mixing and looping, and it’s a huge help when it gets to release picking time. Recorded a layered, a.m. acoustic guitar loop into Ableton. Fed that thru the mackie 1202 (just a bit of delay and reverb on the sends) and then to the morphagene, which I am only starting to really understand. Then sent it thru the Mimeophon and Qpass (smilepass mode). Started with a dub techno chord patch I've been working on. Added a couple of short bass guitar loops, pretty basic kick and percussion, a strat and-a-chuk, and the greatest patch ever syth bass 1 from the greatest juno, the alpha juno, vial the tal-pha plugin (which is indistinguishable). Does chill dub techno exist?This week I switched back around to a trusty mackie 1202 and my original scarlett 2i2. All sounding really good. A little noisy, but who cares these days.Started with a 57 on all the birds outside this am. Added a cr-78-ish beat via the tr6s. Arp from the mopho. Fed these thru the mackie with boss delay and reverb on the aux channels. Added bass guitar, some almost dub chuck keys (analog), shimmer strat, and farted around w/ the new akai dub siren plug in.Nice mix of analog, live instruments, and the computer!
A drone from a few days ago (system-1 (aria) into an old mackie 1202 with a boss delay feedback loop--connected about 70% correctly). These mixers sound so great. Then I threw the kitchen sink at it, including my kind-of booger make noise micro tape machine. A lot of the pieces and bits were done so long ago I have no idea where they came from! 'Best' part of my am session, prepping for a short set tonight. Keeping it mellow as I am opening for an acoustic singer songwriter. Chill for sure. No backbeat helps a ton (which only recently occurred to me). The idea is to be long an subtle. Melodics are op1 tape loops brought back into ableton. All manner of everything used. Samples, the mic, fx, synths etc. op1 (field in this case) does not get enough credit as a live machine. Using it for live keys, tempo matched but not synced (adds a bit of movement-never perfect). So many ways you can go with it, and as this set is largely improvised via clip and loop launching. It's perfect for this situation.

Straight from MPC--one pass.Keeping the January tinge going, trying to do a jam a day. Got hooked on using the obligation of track-a-day as a way to learn where I was lacking. Currently have really tightened up my MPC knowledge in just a few weeks. Learning by doing.

Maybe over-dank'ed the master coming out of the MPC with Flavor Pro (really, really bad name-but great fx bus). A little electro, some old school, sounds like a cassette. Que mas?

Really fills in the gaps.

A pressed-for-time / why-did-I-pick-right-now-to-copy-sd-cards jam with the MPC w/ OP-1F on top. This seems to be my combo of jamuary '23. I am fast on the op-1F, and I am getting better on the MPC. Anyhoo, all thanks to the group etc. A little bit of accountability really goes a long way.

So many combinations, and you can never ever remember what button you pressed before, so it's always changing on you. Makes for some good randomness. At the end of the, hate it if you must, the op1f sounds truly amazing. And I took it on a week vacation and never charged it. I mean, come on!

Pitched it way down w/ the 404 and then deleted a bunch of previous stock samples in the demo project to make some room. Used random bits of what was left for drums. Added bass and some keys. This one I will come back to. Needs a break or 2 and--you know, bring this in, bring this out kind-of things. It's all present and counted for. Really happy with the feel. And that's all I really care about, if I was forced to choose 1 thing.

What felt a lot like artistic resistance was really just work on another alternate workflow. Would have taken me way less time in Ableton or with the SP-404. Hardest part is getting my kind of sounds, and this ended up a little dank, even for me.

Just drop the mixed track into DAW for light and lazy mastering + same w/ a couple effects = done. ©2023 alpha juno llc + jd torian----------Grabbed a short #YouTube sample from the seeburg #elevatormusic library, pitched it down, and sampled it onto the vintage 4 track tape mode of the #op1field Played drums in live (no quant)after getting the sample tucked in (enough). I'd use this for a groove maybe with a live guitarist, put it into the #sp404 and play along with the #system1 , or use it as a transition in a dj set. Quick-work, almost panicked sampling every day for #jamuary23 with different samplers means a deeper understanding of everything I typically use on a daily basis. Part of the brilliance of making every day work everyday. Learning the #mpc500 back to front has informed chopping on the op1f and sp404 etc.

©2019 jd torian I recorded some cicadas out North Zulch, TX, last evening. I knew the rhythm wold be a bear, but I think I got everything tucked in pretty well. I also included a weird voicemail I got, and when I dropped it into Ableton it went nuts and really made the track.

I took my strings from 391, and since this is only my third track w/ DJ, I only reused one element. Also went 100% off grid. The drums are very-off but kind-of worked. Every instrument had its own time, so I went with acoustic guitar and drums running together. It all sits together if you give it a shot.
Standard Ableton drum kit + 2 instances of Analog + moody acoustic chords (same ones I always play) + accidental delay drone/tail from the Alpha Juno and Moog delay.

i made an early era cure-style track for halloween week (think seventeen seconds/ faith/ pornography). my voice is very un-cure-ish, and I just could not leave out the modern vocoder-ed guitar, but all other elements are present. it was really fun to make something that sounded like my influences. i do anyway, but you know what I mean. ***bonus halloween lyrics too.

This was supposed to be a cover, and it is, pretty much.
I emailed Don Mercer for his favorite words of this past season, and they just happened to be something that he and Mark Magram did (huge bonus). So, I used most of the words, added some of my own (while trying to keep the feel), and let it flow. I did not get the vocal right, but I always assume I’ll fix it later when I record the real version of the song. I am happy with the giddy-up release at the end when the 707 drum machine comes in. Tried to time correct the crap bass playing, but it actually seems to pull the song along hitting all those notes early.
