Welcome back to the podcasts! This episode features Shirley Sahrmann. Many of you likely know of Shirley from her research, teachings with Washington University in St. Louis, or her texts for Movement System Impairment Syndromes. I wanted to speak with Shirley to gain a better perspective on her background and thoughts regarding her point of view. I've noticed more in more in my own practice how much the neuromuscular system and create illusions of mechanical dysfunctions, so had thought that maybe Shirley could provide perspective on that. Fortunately, Shirley corrected me on my perceptions about what Movement System Impairment Syndromes are. I'd certainly love to speak with Shirley again about these topics, and more. Welcome back everyone! This conversation is with Ken Olson. If you are at all active within the manual (physical) therapy community, or have attended a conference of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT), you have likely heard of Ken. He has been heavily involved in all depths of the AAOMPT and the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (IFOMPT). Ken is past president of the AAOMPT and is currently the president of IFOMPT. Ken also is co-owner of Northern Rehabilitation Physical Therapy Specialists and has multiple clinic sites in the Northern Illionois area. This is our latest interview with a high-caliber manual therapist. Jack Stagge is a physical therapist that teaches coursework that was pioneered by the late-great Bob Elvey. I actually have had the privelage of being a student under Jack many years ago, and even got to live in his house during that time. He is certainly an extremely talented manual therapist, but is without a doubt an even better human being. You get to hear Jack tell stories of his past, his thoughts on what makes our specialty special, and his personal relationship with one of his biggest mentors (Bob Elvey). Today, we are sharing our conversation with Bill Boissonnault. In it, you get to hear how Bill got started as the primary author of one textbook all of us probably had to get in graduate school (or should have gotten). You also get to learn of some big influences in his early career in terms of manual therapy education. This is a shorter interview than usual, mainly due to Bill being very busy with his position at the American Physical Therapy Association. However, shorter does not mean lacking in quality. So, please listen in and here from an important figure in the physical therapy world!

Joe Farrell is our next guest to the blog in our series of interviews. He is recently retired as a private practice owner in California, but is still quite active within the profession. One of the things that makes Joe special (one of many indeed!) is that he was a founding member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT). Another important thing that Joe is known for over the years is that he served as senior faculty for the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Residency and Fellowship programs. Joe is both a leader and servant, as evident by awards that he has received... which include the Distinguished Lecturer award from AAOMPT and the Catherine Worthingham Fellow from the APTA. Listen in on our conversation and get a glimpse at what makes Joe such a special guy!
Mike Baum is the next friend we get to speak with in our series of interviews. He is a practice owner in Junction City, OR that probably treats a more wide-variety of patients than most of us on any given day. Talk about a well-integrated clinician... with a background in multiple different manual therapy approaches; as well as PNF, he could probably make your head spin if you tried to keep up with him in the clinic (at least that's what I've been told). So tune in and learn a lot from one of the best human beings out there!
During this interview, Ray and I discuss some of the physiology behind blood metrics like cholesterols, triglycerides, blood glucose and insulin; as well as chronic diseases such as diabetes, metabolic disorders, etc. that can all be changed (for the better) through an appropriate diet/lifestyle. Our conversation centers mainly around the low carbohydrate-high fat realm. For those of you somewhat familiar with this topic, you may have heard of "keto" or "ketogenic diet". This is just a more strict form of low carb-high fat.
If you are at all interested in health/wellness and newer research that has been coming out recently (i.e. fat isn't bad, cholesterol is not the devil we though it was, saturated fats are not harmful, etc.), then you won't want to miss this interview. Brett Windsor is our guest for this interview. Talk about a great guy with a lot of knowledge and wisdom to share. It's likely no coincidence he is the CEO of the North American Institute of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy (NAIOMT) and Director of Clinical Excellence for ATI Physical Therapy.
